The city of Kent’s Land Use and Planning Board wants to take its time to figure out how to zone recreational marijuana businesses or whether to allow them at all. “This is all new ground,” said Jack
Ottini, board chairman, at a Monday workshop as he scanned a long list of counties and cities that ban the businesses. “I don’t like to be the guy that’s leading the pack through the wall. I kind of want to sit back and go as slow as we can. “I’m not going to say I’m against it but I want to go slow. If
someone tells me we’ve got to get it done now, I’m going to say no, I don’t think we have to. There’s too many questions that haven’t been answered.” Kent has a six-month ban against marijuana businesses that expires Nov. 27. City officials are studying whether to zone the
producers, processors and sellers of the drug. The state Liquor Control Board plans to issue licenses for the first retail stores to open in July. Up to three retail stores would be allowed in Kent under state rules, but the city’s ban would keep the stores away. The state hasn’t

A liquor license alone costs $2,500 each year. It’s compounded with business and other permits and property taxes. Everything from Bishart’s fixtures to his seating is taxed. “I have to pay a tax each year on every chair in the bar,” Bishart said. High overhead costs, due in no small part to tax rates and liquor costs, diminish Bishart’s liquor selection. The bar originally sported a threepage menu of custom cocktails, which Bishart claims aren’t available anywhere

Community comes together to celebrate the life of Mark Prothero REPORTER STAFF
A large crowd representing different facets of Mark Prothero’s life gathered at the Kentwood High School Commons last Saturday to celebrate the Kent man’s life. Prothero – a prominent criminal defense attorney, civic leader, community volunteer and coach – died April 19 at his Kent home. Prothero, who had battled cancer, was 57. Prothero is best known as one of the lead defense attorneys in the highprofile case against Gary Ridgway between 2001 and 2003. As co-counsel, Prothero brokered a plea deal that spared Ridgway the death penalty in exchange for the Auburn man confessing to 49 counts of aggravated murder. “He was a fine attorney, a great man,” said King County Prosecutor Dan
Satterberg, among the many legal and civic leaders at the open house. “He was an absolute gentleman and one of the real good guys in the legal profession.” John Holman, a Auburn City Councilman, worked with Prothero on the Washington State Forensics Investigations Council. He called Prothero a true professional, a gifted man. “Mark was very reasonable to work with … he was always about the truth.” Prothero was also remembered for his tireless work in the community and how his gentle ways impacted others. “He was a friend, a great man … such an influence,” said Eric Lindblad, whose family shared a passion for swimming with the Protheros. “I marvel at the time he spent giving to the community. I don’t know how

he did it.” Mike Hanis said it was a “a tremendous privilege” to know Prothero as his friend, his law partner for 10 years. Hanis said Prothero was a well-rounded man, committed to his profession but devoted to family and helpful to those in need. “He often said that when he was going through the Ridgway case that it was his coaching and his family … who kept him sane,” Hanis

ShoWare Center ice plant repairs to cost $95,000 BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
The city of Kent’s ShoWare Center operating budget will take a $95,000 hit because of improperly working ice plant equipment. The City Council approved a $95,000 contract on May 6 with Oregon-based PermaCold Engineering, Inc., to repair the equipment that forms ice on the arena floor. Council members also approved a resolution to declare an emergency for the repairs in order to waive the normal requirement where several companies would submit bids to make the fix. “For the last couple of years we’ve been having ongoing difficulties with our ice plant,” said Ben Wolters, city economic and

Sharp faces May 27 court date for theft charges Former Kent City Councilman Ken Sharp faces a King County Superior Court hearing May 27 for first-degree theft charges. Sharp had a May 7 hearing rescheduled to May 27, according to defense attorney Greg Girard. Once both sides are ready to go to trial, a judge can set a trial date. Sharp faces seven counts of first-
degree theft for reportedly stealing $297,500 from his 93-year-old mother’s bank account and putting the money into his account. If convicted as charged, Sharp faces a prison sentence of 22 to 29 months. Sharp pleaded not guilty to the charges in August. Seven people spoke in favor of opening a 24/7 shelter at the old Command Labor building at 307 Lincoln Ave., across from the James Street Park and Ride lot. Three people spoke against the proposal. Pat Gray, who leads KentHOPE, told the council why the new site would work. “It’s close enough to other services such as the Kent Food Bank and Valley Cities so that people are able to access it but with no

The front of the card read, “It’s time that Kent makes a significant effort to care for its homeless.” On the back was a longer message to urge the mayor, council and local leaders to get behind the plan. The Union Gospel Mission and KentHOPE would finance the shelter through fundraising efforts by tapping into its network of donors, churches and foundations. John Greaney, a Kent attorney whose office sits just around the

Board member Katherine Jones said she would like more information about how cities and counties in Colorado have handled zoning for marijuana busi-
nesses. Colorado voters also approved recreational marijuana businesses and the state allowed sales earlier this year. She has concerns about odor. “We have a Starbucks processing plant and you drive down there you can tell it’s coffee,” Jones said. Galazin said with conversations he’s had with the Denver city attorney’s office, odor has been one of the biggest complaints. He said proper ventilation requirements can be part of the zoning and the city might need to take more steps than what the state requires. Board members said they appreciated the staff ’s breakdown of marijuana zoning, but they definitely want to learn more before making any decisions. “There’s really not a lot out there,” board member Alan Gray said. “We’re working in uncharted territory.”

Kent celebrates National Public Works Week Residents don’t often think about the public works employees who make their city run so smoothly. It’s taken for granted that water will flow from the tap, toilets will flush, potholes will be filled and trees will be trimmed. But once a year, the city of Kent encourages residents to reflect on the comfort and quality of life that public works employees help to provide. The city of Kent is honoring those employees who provide and maintain the community’s public facilities and services during
location. Another small step forward would be the city providing more investment on First Avenue, such as bright streetlights and beautification. The first step, Bishart said, is to have the community more engaged and aware of the resources outside of Kent Station. “People think that that’s the downtown area,” Bishart said, “unless they’ve lived here forever.” Sharon Roberts, who manages Spiro’s Greek Island, said that the area has attracted a reputation as being rundown and dangerous, but that isn’t entirely true. While there was a problem with homeless vagrants in the past, city police recently cleaned the area up and moved them along. Roberts said that while she

Since Kent Station’s construction eight years ago, First Avenue has struggled to find an identity and customer base in the rapidly changing environment of South King County and Kent. The introduction of the complexes adjusted traffic flow away from Meeker Street and redirected it along Smith and James streets, depriving the First Avenue block of valuable traffic and stopovers. Part of the problem, Bishart said, is First Avenue’s

Curran and his wife Pat Curran were the 2009 Kent Cornucopia Days Old Timers King and Queen. Pat Curran died of cancer in 2011. She was 77. The Kent Historical Society selected the couple as Cornucopia king and queen for the popular annual festival because of their long history and involvement in the community. They helped sponsor the city of Kent annual Spotlight Series of concerts. Curran volunteered at the Kent Senior Activity Center to help people with legal questions. The couple moved to Kent in 1963. Both were originally from Spokane, but met at the University of Washington during a Halloween dance in 1953, according to a story in the Kent Reporter about their selection as king and queen. “She was sitting on the radiator, sitting like she ought to have a friend,” Pete said, breaking into a grin
and glancing over at his wife. “I ended up with the nicest lady those other guys couldn’t seem to land.” The pair married in August 1955. They raised eight children. Curran went to law school at the UW. After graduation in 1960, he took a job at the Curran Law Firm (started in 1948 by his brother, James Curran, and James Kelleher) in downtown Kent. The firm still operates in Kent and has 11 attorneys. Curran retired in the late 1990s. He spent the early part of his career as a litigation attorney and later worked as a real estate and land use lawyer. “Pete was well known and liked by everybody here and by his clients,” said Davis, who joined the firm in 1980. “That’s why we still go by that name. He was the warmest, most engaging person you’d ever want to meet.” Curran created a family atmosphere at the office. “He had an Irish sense of humor and could make everyone in the office feel
like a member of his family,” Davis said. Davis talked to Curran just last week at the office. “He stopped by for a brief chat,” Davis said. “He would brighten up the office whenever he stopped by.” The engaging personality made the news about his death even tougher. The train, with 220 passengers on board, was southbound from Seattle to Eugene, Ore. The crossing at East Titus Street in the downtown area has gates, flashing signals and audible bells, Kent Police said. Curran is the first person killed by a train in Kent since three people were killed in separate accidents in 2011. Eleven people have been killed by trains in Kent over the last 17 years, according to the state Utilities and Transportation Commission website. “Shock and profound sadness,” Davis said about the reaction around his office. “He was one of my best friends.” Services are pending.

Mayor Cooke deserves better than your attack I read your last issue (May 9) with shock and dismay, thinking someone had delivered the National Enquirer to my driveway in error. Your above the fold story was nothing less than a personal attack on Mayor Suzette Cooke. After all the accusations about an essentially private condominium matter this story boiled down to someone who is obviously going through a time of financial hardship having difficulty with a large bill with not much prior notice. This article began with an attack and continued with innuendo (can she handle Kent finances?) and finally at the end a recap of what should have been her personal financial affairs. She has not been civilly accused for any private or more

While working on my latest story regarding bullying at Mill Creek Middle School, I ran into several obstacles in regards to finding information on the situation at the school. I wanted to get reports from teachers who were genuinely worried and who would provide me with an honest view of the problems the school faced, but it was difficult to get those resources. Finding people to speak honestly and without reservation about the conditions at Mill Creek was like pulling teeth. Any teacher or faculty member not specifically provided to me by the district was terrified of losing their job by speaking to me honestly about the situation. It’s a disturbing sign of the times when people who know the most about a situation feel vulnerable and afraid to go to the media to discuss it. Whistleblowers are an important part of history, and it’s become harder than ever to discuss issues and problems without fear of repercussions. The issue of quashing information dissemination to the press isn’t anything new. Every decade seems to have its whistleblowers, whether it’s Deep Throat or Edward Snowden. But those names relate to the FBI, NSA and CIA. National security is an understandable – if sometimes overused – reason to restrict information. Organizations – whether they are public or private – that limit journalist access should always be viewed with a healthy amount of skepticism. The public must always ask why an organization is so hesitant to give out some information but limit other kinds. Sometimes it’s guarded for security, other times for privacy of people involved. The people I spoke with for work on the Mill Creek story were employees of the Kent School District. The information they had to divulge hurts no one but the district’s

Like the fairytale “Princess and the Pea,” we have the luxury of being discomforted by the smallest things. But a majority of King County voters were unwilling to pay $60 once a year to fund public transportation and fix roads. I guess they’d rather sit in heavy traffic, breathe filthy air and ignore the plight of the many people who will now have trouble getting to work and school. I guess where I’m going with this is that the Kent Reporter needs the public just as much as the public needs us. We
need you to tell us things that the schools and police and city and businesses don’t tell us. We need you to tell us the actual human details about a person beyond “they’re a nice person” or “they work re-
ally hard.” The nature of our work requires us to mine information from unconventional sources, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t need the community’s help to discuss problems.

your food, your car, your house and your workplace. Look around you. So, when government officials or the Sierra Club talk about eliminating fossil fuel, we should understand what that means. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, more than 90 percent of the energy we use comes from fossil fuels and nuclear power (another energy source the Sierra Club wants to eliminate – and they’re not crazy about hydropower either, which produces most of our electricity in Washington). If we eliminate those energy sources, how will the Princess and the Pea fare without all her creature comforts? How will we? During power outages, newscasts are filled with images of miserable families huddled in cold

My point is this: because we have so much, we think little about it. Because we don’t realize how much we depend on fossil fuel, we imagine we can do without it. Before we embrace public policies and campaigns that will eliminate 90 percent of our energy, perhaps we should spend a week living “Life Below Zero” to see how we like it. Hopefully, then we can focus on how to apply our knowledge and technology to use fossil fuels more cleanly and efficiently.

It would be nice if solar and wind power could fill the gap but they can’t – and never will. People who live a subsistence lifestyle have a very different view of fossil fuels. The National Geographic series “Life Below Zero” follows several people who live near the Arctic Circle in Alaska. Some are 100 miles from the nearest town; no roads, no convenience stores, no Home Depot. They haul water from a stream and heat with wood; they fish, trap and hunt for food. But even so, their lives depend on fossil fuel. They cook with wood – sometimes propane – and use gas to run their snowmobiles and the generators that power their lights and emergency radios. ...obituaries Charles Peter “Pete” Curran Charles Peter “Pete” Curran passed away suddenly at the age of 81 on May 11, 2014, in an accident. Pete lived in Kent,Washington for 53 years. He was born in Spokane,Washington on January 20, 1933 to Frank Colum and Helen Virginia Curran, the last of 9 children. Growing up in Spokane during the Depression, Pete lived on his family farm at Morgan Acres, and attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School in Hillyard. During these years, Pete made close friendships with several young boys from the Hillyard neighborhood and these friends remained intensely loyal to Pete for the remainder of his life. They called themselves the “Hillyard Burglars”. After graduating from Gonzaga Prep high school, Pete attended Gonzaga University, and the University of Washington. Following a stint in the Army, he graduated from UW with a B.A. in history and, later, a law degree (1960). He began practicing law with his brother Jim. To this day, the Curran Law Firm is a respected South King County firm. In 1953, while attending UW, Pete met an attractive young coed named Patricia Phillips at a dorm dance, and before the evening was over they were at an ice cream parlor on University Ave falling in love. In 1955 “Pete and Pat” were married and children followed shortly thereafter – eight of them. Pete and Pat were married 55 years until Pat succumbed to cancer in 2011, Pete missed her greatly. A lover of nicknames, mole hunting, A Prairie Home Companion, and cooking Mediterranean food, Pete was a playful dad. He valued family and friends, created the first of many Curran Family reunions, St. Paddy’s Day tailgaters, and loved to engage everyone he met with one of his many tall tales. He believed both his sons and daughters could go anywhere and he was one of the first girls’ soccer coaches in Kent. Pete loved adventure traveling to places all over the world including Europe, Cuba, India, Vietnam, Egypt, Mexico, and

Turkey. In 1979, Pete took a three month sabbatical from his law practice, and Pete and Pat took 7 of their young children on a five nation journey through Europe, planting the seed of travel adventure in his children and grandchildren. Pete and Pat served the needy of all beliefs through St. Vincent De Paul, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church and were active philanthropists in many other charitable and arts organizations. Passionate about jazz, blue grass and folk music, Pete sought out music from the jazz clubs of Tacoma to the New Orleans’s Jazz Festival and Vancouver Folk Fest. Pete was a lifelong handball player, and in his 70’s, competed in a handball championship in Dublin, Ireland, and in his 80’s, still played handball twice a week. Among other accomplishments, Pete spearheaded the construction of Valley General Hospital, worked as an advance man on Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign, and while he was in the Army, worked as an extra on the Audie Murphy movie “To Hell and Back.” Pete will be greatly missed by his children, Keelin (Jack), Sheila (Henry), Marcy (Rod), Betsey (Jonathan), Brendan (Amy), Mary (Dean), and Megan (Eric). A beloved son, Colin, died in 1983. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Claire, Paloma, Colum, Melanie, Mackenzie, Delaney, Kevin, Katya, Beau, Graham, Declan, Dylan, Marlena, Audrey, Camille, Althea, Augie, Otis and Olivia, a great grandchild, Stazzi James, and his brother and sister, Robert and Maureen. A Vigil for Pete Curran will be held on May 21st at 7pm at Holy Spirit Church in Kent. A Memorial Mass will be held on May 22nd at 10:30 am at Holy Spirit Church in Kent, followed by a luncheon reception. Jeanne Stookey died April 25, 2014 at the age of 93. She was a resident of Kent for 45 years. She was born July 27, 1920 in Seattle. She married Bob Stookey in 1942 in Olympia. Jeanne is survived by her son Charlie (Judith) and daughter Suzie; grandchildren Michael and Annie (David); beloved great grandchildren Maggie, Charlie, Sophie and Cody; and many other family members whom she loved dearly. Her service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, Kent, WA on May 24th beginning at 11:00a.m. with a reception to follow. THE SOUTHEAST KING COUNTY COALITION AGAINST TRAFFICKING (SEKCAT) presents a free screening of “Rape For Profit�, a documentary that sheds light on human trafficking in the Seattle area.
The film begins at 6:30 p.m. May 20, at the Kent-Meridian High School Performing Arts Center, 10020 SE 256th St., Kent. The documentary was filmed in 2012, in and around the SeaTac area, and features local
police, officials and actual events and people in the trafficking trade. Following the film, Kent Police detective Lovisa Dvorak will discuss the trafficking situation in the area.
Kent Covenant Church cosponsors the event. SEKCAT is one of eight CAT (coalitions against trafficking) groups established along the Interstate-5 corridor in the last three years. It is an all-volunteer,

He is an active community leader and has served on numerous boards and task forces, including the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, Auburn Rotary and

Mayor Suzette Cooke visited the monthly gathering of the Centro Rendu Hispanic Advisory Team (HAT) on May 7 to discuss issues related to helping Latinos in South King County. The Centro Rendu HAT group, which meets monthly, represents organizations serving Latino families in King County. Mirya Munoz-Roach, director of Hispanic outreach services for St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle and King County, leads the group. The monthly gathering is held at Centro Rendu, the Latino Educational and Resource Center of SVdP, located inside its community thrift store in Kent. Kent teen takes silver at Special Olympics Kent’s Michael Jorski captured a silver medal for his soccer skills at the King County Region Soccer Tournament on May 3. “Words can’t describe how I feel when I watch him compete, but I can tell how much he loves playing when I see him smile,” said Michael’s mother, Susan. “His smile tells me everything he can’t fully express with words.” Michael lives with a rare disease, Michael Jorski tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which causes a variety of resulting symptoms and conditions. In Michael’s case, these include cognitive delays and autism. Michael, 15, attends Kent-Meridian High School, where he is in the Adaptive Support Center, which provides additional school support for those with special needs. His parents, Susan and Matt, are members of the TSC Alliance, a primary tuberous sclerosis U.S. advocacy group. Susan recently met with state representatives from Washington and Oregon in Washington, D.C., to support research funds for TSC. To learn more, visit tsalliance.org.

A gentle giant, the 27-year-old Gresham performs ministry during the offseason, including summer camps for kids. He lives on Mercer Island, where he shares his home with five other leaders of Young Life, an outreach ministry that serves youth. During the season, Gresham leads the Seahawks Bible study groups. Speaking engagements are just an extension of Gresham’s faith-filled call-
ing, a belief deeply rooted with family in Texas. Given his size and temperament, athletics, notably football, came naturally to Gresham. The New Orleans Saints took a chance, signing the un-drafted free agent out of Texas Christian University in 2010. But the Saints soon waived him, and the Seahawks, well, snapped him up. Gresham handles an anonymous but critical job – repeatedly making accurate snaps to the punter positioned 15 yards back from the line of scrimmage. He also triggers the ball back to the placeholder on critical field goals and extra-point conversions. It’s a repetitious role that has little room for error. Football is a snap to Clint Gresham. Overcoming doubt takes time. Blessed with the gift of handling a specialized job in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks’ long snapper admits he struggled with some uncertainties early on in his career. That was until he found peace and solidified his faith. Gresham, a Christian leader and Super Bowl XLVIII champion, follows Xs and Os during the season, but his preferred playbook is the Bible. Here’s why: “I struggled with a lot of insecurity as a young person, and I really carried that into my walk with God,� Gresham told the audience at Calvary Chapel South in Kent last Saturday night. “I brought this insecurity and this lack of understanding of who I was in Christ, (not only) into my relationship with God but into my career on the football field. Because I had this insecurity and this doubt, I struggled with the fear of man. “(But) if you believe about yourself (the way) Jesus believes about you, you will be unstoppable in every single area of your life,� he said. “Jesus thinks awesome things about you. That’s just the truth, man.� Gresham said his renewed commitment to Christ has brought better,
motion throughout the game along the sideline. All told, Gresham estimates he takes about 200 snaps on game day. At first, the job came with some occupational hazards. The long snapper was prone to punishment as soon as he released the snap on kicks. “My first year, I got clobbered every single game because I was so vulnerable. I’m already the smallest guy on the line,� said the 6-foot3, 240-pound Gresham, who often struggles to maintain his weight. “When I get down, I have my head between my legs and I’m trying to make sure that I get the ball back in the right spot. And, as soon as I moved the ball, I’ve got this 390-pound dude just undercutting me.� But new rules today protect the center on kicks. “You can’t do that anymore. Praise the Lord,� a grinning Gresham said of the immediate blows he absorbed on kicks. Gresham hopes to hold onto his job for as long as he can. Efficient long snappers are hard to find, and when they blossom and stay healthy, they usually stick around the NFL for many years. Just ask Trey Junkin, who played 19 seasons in the NFL with six different teams, including the Seahawks. Gresham said he is comfortable with his life, his career and his faith. It’s also great to be a part of a wonderful group of teammates who accomplished something special last season. “The idea of winning a Super Bowl is so crazy,� Gresham said. “To think that we were the first to actually do that in Seahawks history is pretty amazing. It’s so cool.�

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR SHOWARE SHOOTOUT 3 ON 3 TOURNAMENT Registration is open for the fifth annual ShoWare Shootout 3 on 3 basketball tournament presented by Republic Services. The event runs Saturday and Sunday, July 19-20, at the ShoWare Center in Kent. The shootout will feature up to 200 teams competing in a variety of divisions for men, women, children and wheelchair players. A ball hockey division returns for the second straight year. Kentridge High School pitcher Lizzet Dominguez comes off as a little shy, a teenager slowly transitioning to adulthood, but that shyness belies a fierce competitive nature. The fourth-year varsity fastpitch softball pitcher is a key element in the Chargers’ (12-3, 14-3) success this season, helping lead them to a second-place finish in the South Puget Sound League North Division. Kentridge wraps up the league tournament this week before playing in next week’s district tournament. “So far I’m really proud of how we’ve done,” she says. “I don’t think very many people expected much from us.” While making the state championship is a goal for the senior, she also wants another shot at Tahoma, the only team to have a winning record over Kentridge. The Chargers lost 10-8 in its first game against Tahoma

season with the Chargers, and she’s planning to go out with a bang. Dominguez has played fastpitch for seven years, but says she wasn’t interested in the sport when she first tried it in fourth grade.
“We were going through that phase where we tried every sport,” she says. “I played softball and honestly the first time I hated it.” It wasn’t until she tried pitching that she discovered she really like playing.

It was a missed catch here, a pop fly there, and the errors added up. The Kentridge High School baseball team took a 7-3 loss in its opening district playoff game Tuesday against the Battle Ground Tigers. Several mistakes at crucial points in the game allowed Battle Ground to pick up easy runs and put the pressure on Kentridge. The Chargers banged out several hits, but all the runners were eliminated by
pop flies or double plays. Joe Wainhouse blasted a solo home run to lead the Chargers. He has nine homers this season. Taylor Poffenroth scored twice. Pitcher Sam Dacus took the loss. He gave up six runs (just two earned) in six innings. He struck out two and walked one. Coach John Flanigan said that despite the five errors he felt his team would be ready to tackle Olympia in the second district game Wednesday night. Results were unavailable at the Kent
Reporter’s press deadline. The game marked the Chargers second loss in three days since their 12-0 defeat to Rogers, of Puyallup, last Saturday. The Rogers’ game particularly stung, since before getting rained out on May 8, Kentridge led 3-0 and was set up to take the South Puget Sound League title. Flanigan dismissed the team’s performance, saying that the rainout had given them a mental challenge to come, play, and then end halfway into the game. “We’re gonna play good

“Fourth grade is when I fell in love with pitching, and seventh grade is when I realized I could do something with it,” she says. The 18-year-old serves as the team’s captain as well and first-string pitcher. While sophomore Jessica Cruz backs her up, many of Kentridge’s wins have hinged on Dominguez’s ability to lead a tough-asnails defense and lock down the infield. Dominguez has a 2.26 ERA and an overall record of 14-3, with losses only to Tahoma and Kentwood. While some of her skills have been developed over seven years of pitching, she also has worked hard in her offseason at home and on the Washington Ladyhawks fastpitch team. The work paid off, with her and Carly Hubbard taking over primary pitching duties on the Ladyhawks. Today, she likes hearing opposing teams advising their players to “watch the change-up,� she says, “be-

Returning for her second season as a captain, she says her priorities have shifted. girls and underclassmen, so I try to be open with them so that they know that I’m there.� But she’s also had to balance being helpful and available to her teammates with being a strong leader that players will want to follow. She says she’s been trying to avoid becoming a strict or overbearing leader but simultaneously establish her presence on the team. “I have to make sure they know that I am the pitcher, that I am the leader,� Dominguez says. Pitching with the Chargers provides a healthy amount of pressure for Dominguez, and one of the favorite moments in her career came from the pressure on the mound. While playing Tahoma, Dominguez faced a fullcount with the loaded bases after a hit, a walk and another hit. Three balls and two strikes maxed the count, and the pressure was on to prevent the Bears from scoring two or potentially three more runs. Dominguez struck the batter out. “I really like how it depends on you,� she says. “Even in the bad games, like, you have to take that accountability, you can’t brush it off on anyone else. It’s you.� While Dominguez says her goals each year have been a state championship, she feels more confident this year than any other. “This year I really feel like we can actually make it happen,� she says. Going into next week, the team will be looking at shaping up its batting strategy, since it’ll take more than just solid defense to win their upcoming games. Kentridge carries an ERA of only 2.20 and has a high field-

The third week of May means the honeymoon may be over and those sweet young plants you purchased are starting to show the effects of less than perfect growing conditions. Here are the most asked questions and some tips for figuring out what is wrong with your plants:

I planted petunias in a large pot. Now I notice the lower leaves of the petunias are turning yellow. I think the plants look a bit wilted but I water the pot every few days and keep the soil moist. It is a very large half whiskey barrel. Should I add more fertilizer? I mixed plant food into the soil when I added the petunias. R.L., Kent

I suspect a drinking problem – as in too much water. Here are the clues to this diagnosis. First, lower leaves turning yellow are a sign of root damage. Second a plant that is overwatered will start to look wilted as the roots rot from too much moisture and are unable to take up water. Third you planted just a few plants in a large container – too much soil with too few plants in a container can hold an excess water especially when the plants are young and newly planted. Finally, the fourth reason your petunias may be drowning is that you mentioned you water every few days to keep the soil moist. In our climate you may

not need to water for weeks due to rain and cloudy weather or need to water every day if the weather heats up. You must feel the potting soil and water only when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch – never on a set schedule. I do not recommend more fertilizer – try to let the soil dry out even if it means placing an umbrella over the container or moving it under the eaves for a while. If your petunias continue to yellow and wilt, take them out and start over once the weather had warmed and the soil has dried up a bit.

I love coleus and purchased twelve plants with large and colorful leaves to use as a contrast to my hosta in a new shade garden. I also added other shade-loving plants like lobelia, begonias and a lovely hydrangea. I improved the soil with compost and all the plants are doing great except for the coleus – the leaves have fallen off of most of these plants and some have black marks on the stems right at the soil level. The other clue to this cold case is that you added compost to the soil and there are black marks on the stems of the plants. Compost is great but it holds moisture and can encourage leaf and stem blight in plants like coleus that are super sensitive to cold damp conditions. I would take tip cuttings of your surviving coleus by snipping out the top growth that might still be healthy and placing these cuttings into a glass of water indoors. If you see roots forming in a few weeks you can try again with coleus. This time grow your coleus in containers of potting soil and keep them under cover and protected from rain storms and chilly nights.
