The Kent City Council might ask voters to approve construction of a new police headquarters with a property tax increase. Police Chief Ken Thomas asked
the council at a workshop last week to pass a resolution by July 15 to put the measure on the Nov. 4 ballot. The council has yet to set a date to vote on whether to send the proposal to voters. Voters would be asked to approve a $30 million bond to be
paid over 20 years. The property tax rate would be 16 cents per $1,000 assessed value or about $48 per year for a $300,000 home, according to Paula Barry, interim city finance director. The bond measure would require 60 percent voter approval.
“We’re in a building that’s an old library that was remodeled over 20 years ago to be a temporary location until we built a new police station,” Thomas said to the council about the police department’s move in 1991 from City Hall. “At that time we had about

An organization determined to establish a 24-hour homeless shelter in Kent walked the downtown streets last Friday in a mobilizing show of support. KentHOPE – in collaboration with 25 local churches – has been working for three years to build a homeless day center and overnight shelter in Kent. “Today’s walk was a ‘Journey to the Cross,’ ” said Pat Gray, chair of the executive committee for KentHOPE. “But it was also a walk to show hope for the homeless neighbors that we have in Kent.” The Hope for Homeless Walk began at Kaibara Park, where leaders spoke of Jesus’ “Journey to the Cross” and led the crowd in prayer. At City Hall, walkers placed candles around a sign that read, “These candles are lit in honor of those in Kent without a home!!” Participants also gathered and sang at the Command Labor Building, the walk’s final location, where one member of the homeless community and supporter of KentHOPE yelled, “God

The homeless thing just has to get better.” Dave wasn’t the only member from the homeless community who came out to support KentHOPE and its goal. “I’ve been homeless
down here over a period of 10 years, and this is something that’s really needed,” Karen Kelly said. “What this would do for the community is bring (the homeless off ) the streets and into a place where (they) can get something to better themselves and the community.” About 85 supporters participated in the walk, according to Gray. They gained the attention of
honking cars, waving bystanders and curious people who watched from the windows of businesses. “It’s a show of strength,” Gray said. “It’s a show of the amount of people in the community who have a concern, want a solution and want to serve the homeless.” Kierra Elfalan is a University of Washington student working for the UW News Lab.

Voters’ rejection of Metro Transit measure to impact Kent would have received $3.1 million per year for road repairs under the measure. The proposition would have generated about $130 million annually with 60 percent going to Metro and 40 percent to the county and cities for road and other transportation projects. The bus reductions are expected to hit in September, Ralph said. “We’re losing nine routes that will be completely eliminated,” she said. “Three others will be
reduced. There will be more crowded buses and reduced service.” Ralph said she thought the proposition had a chance to pass. “I was somewhat surprised,” she said. “I felt it would have fairly strong support, especially in Seattle where voters use transit more.” Dick Paylor, spokesman for Families for Sustainable Transit, which opposed the proposition, said voters are tired of bailing

King County voters were rejecting the proposition by 55 to 45 percent, according to results released Tuesday night by King County Elections. The no votes were 220,887 compared to
162,508 yes votes. The measure would have charged $60 per year for vehicle license fees and raised the sales tax 0.1 percent (to 9.6 percent) to help pay for Metro Transit bus service as well as road projects in the county and cities within the county. “That’s $3.1 million we won’t have coming to Kent,” Kent City Council President Dana Ralph said during a phone interview. KENT APPROVES 30-HOME SUBDIVISION ON EAST HILL A proposal in Kent to build 30 single-family homes in the 24400 block of 98th Avenue South has been approved by the city hearing examiner. Harbour Homes, LLC, plans to subdivide three parcels on the East Hill totaling 4.2 acres into 30 single-family residential lots, according to city documents. The development is known as the Bandon East subdivision. The property has a single-family home and an outbuilding, both of which will be removed. The property is zoned SR-8 (eight homes per acre) for single family residential. Hearing Examiner Lee Raaen approved the development with conditions in an April 11 report to the city after holding a public hearing April 2 at City Hall.

A former Kentridge High School teacher charged with attempted commercial sexual abuse of a minor faces a May 6 court hearing. Brent Patrick Conley, 27, of Seattle, had an April 15 King County Superior Court date
continued at the request of his attorney, said Ian Goodhew, spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. A trial date could be set at the next hearing or attorneys could ask for more time to prepare the case. He pleaded not guilty to the charge in October and is out on bail. Seattle Police arrested Conley in September outside of a Seattle McDonald’s as part of an undercover sting where a detective posed online as a 15-year-old girl seeking sex

with older men in exchange for money. Conley is no longer employed by the Kent School District. He was a first year English and social studies teacher at the school last fall until his arrest. Conley did solicit, offer or request to engage in sexual conduct with a minor in return for a fee, according to charging papers. Conley admitted to detectives he went to the McDonald’s to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex.

Rain appropriately fell during a gathering of Kent, King County and state politicians to kick off an $18 million Green River levee repair project. In fact, organizers for the 2.7-mile BriscoeDesimone levee project even moved the podium from a small tent along the Green River Trail to a larger tent in a nearby parking lot on April 17 at Briscoe Park to help keep everyone dry. “Thanks for coming out here to Kent on this very rainy day which does remind us of the realities of flooding throughout the region,” said County Councilman Reagan Dunn, whose district covers portions of Kent. Dunn also is chairman of the King County Flood Control District, which is paying for the project. The flood district, formed in 2007, is funded by a property tax of 10 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation. That tax raises about $50 million per year. The flood district received a state grant of $7 million to help pay for the levee repairs. Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent and Sen. Joe Fain, R-Auburn, attended the kickoff event because of the state’s contribution. “The levees are incredibly important to homeowners and businesses threatened by flooding throughout the Kent Valley,” Fain said. “A well designed and constructed levee improves the quality of life and saves money for valley residents. It also moves us toward certification, which would lower floodinsurance premiums in the area and keep the valley’s economic engine strong.”

separate building because of the lack of space. “It’s embarrassing to see the conditions some of these officers have to work with. I get it’s budget issues but there comes a time where we need to prepare ourselves and not just to get it to where they can be comfortable now but prepare us for 20 years from now.� Previous police chiefs Steve Strachan and Ed Crawford each tried to get a new headquarters built. A few studies were done, but the most recent proposal by Strachan several years ago got pushed back when the recession hit. “I think it needs to be said the police department has done a fantastic job shoehorning themselves in that building and doing it with a
smile on their face for many, many years,� Councilman Dennis Higgins said. “They recognized the budget situations they were in. Now that we have Panther Lake and are ramping up our number of officers, they have waited long enough.� Because of the tight space, some employees work at desks set up with dividers installed in the middle of a hallway. Crews converted a closet to an office. An evidence room is housed in City Hall. About $800,000 of the bond would be used to pay to rewire and re-plumb the city jail along Central Avenue. “If we do that we can pretty much guarantee ourselves another 30 years out of the building,� Thomas
said about the jail. Funds also would be spent to have several more cells to handle inmates with mental health issues. The jail has six holding cells but only one is set up to properly handle the mentally ill with what’s called a crisis cell. More than half of the inmates have mental health issues, Thomas said. Thomas added funds also would be spent to increase capacity at the police firearm and vehicle training range. The city will conduct an initial phone survey with voters to gage awareness of a need for a new police station and how many might support the proposal. “There is no awareness out there now, so we need to get that awareness going,� Higgins said.

the relevance, rigor and relationships philosophy only several years ago from Bill Daggett, the founder of the International Center for Leadership in Education. “They interrelate and allow kids to take the knowledge that they’ve learned and apply it to their world,� Henderson said. Relevance is the first part of Henderson’s teaching strategy. She believes that by teaching students why a subject is important will incite them to learn by themselves, and the teacher acts as an advisor and mentor. “When they’re interested, when they really get connected with it, their learning just exponentially grows,� she said. “It’s not coming from me telling them you gotta do this, they’re saying, ‘How can I do this? I wanna do this now. It all comes internally.’� Sustaining student interest isn’t always easy, she said. One of the most difficult parts of her work is time management, especially considering she teaches six
periods a day. Staying up to date on the rapidly changing technology sector is one of the most challenging parts of Henderson’s life, and still consume her time outside of the classroom. She often spends hours after grading assignments reading to catch up on advancements in technology. She has attended conferences such as the Cybersecurity Summit for her computer science class and the Personal Finance for Educators Conference for her accounting class. Proving the relevance of her subject matter allows Henderson to make the curriculum challenging because her students have a desire to learn and improve. She can then give them more challenging assignments that range from simple game designs and coding to large scale application development. Her final course, special projects in computer science, fields 21 students working independently on computer science projects. Working with students
in this capacity helps her establish strong relationships with her students that persist after they leave the classroom. Having a solid relationship with students also has given Henderson strong connections with her students who have returned later in life to thank her and assist her teaching. One such student, Brittany Myazaki, developed a love of accounting through Henderson’s class. When Myazaki joined the Price Waterhouse accounting firm, she reached out to Henderson to lead field trips to the Seattle business. Relevance, rigor and relationships are only a small part of what Henderson has learned in her 21 years of teaching. She’s had plenty of time to learn and change her style to make sure her students get the most out of her classes.

They listen to Henderson because they understand the importance of what she’s teaching, they feel challenged by the material, and they have a strong teacher and student relationship. These concepts of relevance, rigor and relationships are the cornerstones of Henderson’s teaching philosophy. They tie into a William Butler Yeats quote she has kept as her mainstay over the years: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.� Teaching should be more of a mentorship for students interested in an idea than a lecturer who simply dispenses information. He had a humorous slant on things, even in difficult times.” Prothero was a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Washington Defender Association, and the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, serving on its board of governors from 2003 to 2009. He was a judge pro tem in King County Superior Court and in Kent, Tukwila, Des Moines, and SeaTac municipal courts. In 2006, “Presumed Innocent” magazine named Prothero and his partner, Girard, Trial Lawyers of the Year. Prothero was also named a criminal defense “SuperLawyer” by Washington Law & Politics magazine in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. The honor recognizes the top 25 criminal defense practitioners in the state, as voted on by other Washington attorneys. Prothero was willing to help others. “He was always a great mentor to attorneys as well as at our firm,” Girard said. “And when we used to work as public defenders, he was always the one who would help young attorneys.” Prothero began his career in criminal defense in 1983, working as a public defender for the Associated Counsel for the Accused (ACA). He started off defending people in municipal and district courts accused of such crimes as DUI, shoplifting and domestic violence. He moved on to defend juveniles. In 1987, he joined the felony unit. While at ACA, Prothero participated in many pro bono projects. “I hold him in the highest regard. He was a terrific lawyer, a terrific mentor to younger attorneys while he worked here,” said Don Madsen, ACA director, who worked with Prothero for 25 years. “He gave back to the community. He cared about the clients he represented.”
Giving back Prothero was deeply committed to community involvement. He served on several Kent School District committees and on the board of directors for the Kent Parks Foundation. He volunteered at local high schools and colleges, speaking about criminal law and law as a career. “He felt it was important to educate kids,” Girard said. In 2003, Prothero cofounded the organization, Kent Citizens for Water Safety, in a successful effort to keep the Kent-Meridian pool open. In 2007 and 2008, he chaired the Citizens for Kent Recreation and Aquatics Future, which worked to have a new aquatic and recreation facility built in Kent. Prothero also was a successful swimmer in the 1970s. He was a recordsetting swimmer at Renton High School. He was captain of the University of Washington swim team in 1977 and 1978 and represented the United States in international competitions in Rosario (Argentina), Amsterdam and Paris. He served on the board of directors of the Husky Swimming Foundation and on the Pacific Northwest Swimming Board of Review. Prothero was the successful swim coach at Kentwood High School from 1997 through 2007, earning State Coach of the Year honors in 2003. He also coached in the Seattle Summer Swim League for Lakeridge Swim Club for many years, as well as Kent Swim & Tennis Club from 1995 to 2008. “He was a quality coach,” said Dave Lutes, Kent School District athletic director. “He wasn’t worried about money, time, and all those other issues. He was there for the kids. (Coaching) was a passion.”
Prothero is survived by his wife, Kelly, and two grown children. Sean, a legal assistant, is the swim coach at Kennedy High School. Marley, a standout high school and collegiate swimmer and one-time assistant coach at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, is the coach of the Kent Swim & Tennis Club. Prothero also is survived by his mother, Shirley Prothero, and brother, Blake Emery. “The most important thing in his life was the love that he had for his family,” Madsen said. “He worshipped his family and supported everything they did,” Girard said. “They’re a tight-knit family.” King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove said Prothero personified many great things. “Mark was a loving husband and father. He also was a friend to so many of us in the community because he cared about people and about public service. His life and his values will stand forever as a model for all of us and for the next generation. My heart goes out to his family.” A celebration of Prothero’s life is Saturday, May 10 at the Kentwood High School Commons, 25800 164th Ave. SE, Covington. The open house is from 1 to 5 p.m.

Prothero, who had waged a two-year battle with lung cancer, was 57. Prothero is best known as one of the lead defense attorneys in the highprofile case against Ridgway between 2001 and 2003. As co-counsel, Prothero brokered a plea deal that spared Ridgway the death penalty in exchange for the Auburn man confessing to 49 counts of aggravated murder. News of Prothero’s death jolted co-workers at his Kent law firm. “It’s a shock,” said Greg Girard, longtime friend, colleague and partner at Hanis Irvine Prothero, PLLC. “It’s devastating, frankly.” Prothero had more than 30 years of experience in criminal defense. He was on the Washington Supreme Court’s panel of attorneys qualified to defend individuals faced with the death penalty. He defended men and women, adults and juveniles, accused of state and federal crimes, felonies and misdemeanors. Widely recognized for his expertise on scientific evidence, forensic DNA, mental state defenses and the death penalty, Prothero was an in-demand lecturer at legal education seminars. Attorneys who worked closely with Prothero described him as the ultimate professional – caring, focused, smart, unflappable. “He had a wonderfully generous spirit. It pervaded all aspects of his life – the way he practiced law, particularly in the way he treated his clients, who, let’s face it, were always in trouble,” Gruenhagen said. “He was always able to find positive, redeeming qualities in just about every human being he ever met.” Prothero excelled in a tough, sometimes emotionally-charged profession, maintaining a steady approach even to the most complex trials. “He was a very good trial lawyer who also was excellent at negotiating cases for his clients,” Girard said. “He understood the theme, the essence of the case and building a strength of the case as a defense. “A defense attorney can be a tough job. You’re never perceived as having the white hat on very often, that’s for certain,” Girard said. “It can be a job that can burn you out. You’re dealing with people with serious issues on a case. “His ability to balance his life with those stresses was something he was very good at,” Girard said. “And he often dealt with it with

City's stance on marijuana: abuse of power? As a high school teacher of American Government, I taught two generations of Kent students that elected leaders serve to represent the will of the governed. How would I now explain to them that what the mayor and Kent City Council are doing follows this basic American democratic tenant? The majority of Kent residents voted to legalize medical marijuana and recreational marijuana. The mayor and council are telling the citizens who elected them and whom they represent, “We don’t care what you voted into law, we are not going to let you have it in our city! That venerable adage, “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it,” came to mind Tuesday as President Barack Obama departed the Oso firehouse. Not because the communicator-in-chief had just provided three cringe-worthy moments with his tortured pronunciation of the town’s name. Rather it was Obama’s subtle acknowledgement that the emergency response to the deadly mudslide did not get carried out in letter perfect fashion. Families and neighbors of the deceased and missing encountered frustrations with first responders during those first days after the earth moved. “Some terrific lessons were learned in the midst of very hard times during this process, because almost uniquely, we had not just coordination between state, local and federal officials, but also coordination between volunteers and those officials,” Obama said to the crowd at the firehouse. “And I know that it required some improvisation and some kinks getting worked out, but it was important for the family members themselves and the community themselves to be hands-on and participate in this process — particularly a community like this one where folks are hearty and know how to do things, and take great pride in being selfreliant. “It was important that they weren’t just bystanders in this process, they were involved every step of the way,” he said. Rep. Elizabeth Scott, R-Monroe, might feel validated by his words. She made much the same point a month ago. But the freshman lawmaker, among those who met with the president Tuesday, expressed it far less diplomatically, and perhaps too soon, to be effective. Only four days had passed before she unloaded about a lack of common sense in aspects of the rescue and recovery efforts. She spoke of how residents embraced Darrington

listen to the people on the ground,� Monroe said on March 27. “People of Darrington feel really dismissed and put down.� There would be a time to discuss what didn’t go right and what to do about it, she said. “There’s no such thing as a perfect response. We can learn from this and going forward we can think about how we have a better plan,� she said. They should have just read Wilson’s Facebook posts in which she bragged about stealing millions and called herself “the queen of IRS tax fraud.� Sometimes, stealing from taxpayers is a well-organized scheme on a grand scale. In 2008, the New York Times revealed rampant fraud in the federally-administered disability program for the Long Island Rail Road. Investigators estimated that, had it continued, the scheme could have netted criminals $1 billion. In a recent update, the Times reported, “Overall, 33 people have been criminally charged; 28 pleaded guilty and five more were convicted in Manhattan federal court. In addition, 44 former employees with the railroad avoided prosecution by admitting to their role in the fraud and agreed to the termination of their benefits.�
April 25, 2014 [7] What? Forty-four employees escaped prosecution simply by agreeing to stop taking the illegal benefits? Do bank robbers go free if they agree to return the loot? It’s not likely taxpayers will get their money back. In one case, the judge sentenced 60-year old James Maher, a former railroad conductor, to perform 300 hours of community service and repay $347,481 in fraudulently obtained benefits. Maher negotiated a repayment rate of $400 a month, giving him more than 72 years to pay back what he stole. We’ll get our money back if Maher lives to be 132. What’s worse, the system that allowed this massive fraud remains in effect. In February, the inspector general for the United States Railroad Retirement Board reported that 96 percent of those seeking disability payments from the Long Island Rail Road are approved – roughly the same rate as before the scandal. The I.G. noted that even after the Retirement Board instituted
“reforms,� the Board upheld the dubious disability claims of seven retirees who later pleaded guilty to disability fraud. But even this billion-dollar fraud scheme pales in comparison to Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Government officials estimate that criminals steal $100 billion each year from Medicare and Medicaid. In February, one woman in Washington, D.C., was arrested for filing $75 million in fraudulent claims. Investigators say that, in some circles, defrauding entitlement programs has replaced drug dealing as the crime of choice. Until federal officials intensify their efforts to find and prosecute fraud – and until judges impose tougher sentences on these criminals – we can expect more of the same. Don C. An officer on another call saw a silver Honda speed past him going northbound on Central Avenue at an estimated speed of 90 mph, according to the police report. The vehicle pulled into the Jack in the Box drive through where an officer activated his car’s overhead lights to stop the vehicle. The officer saw a driver and then another man in the backseat who had wet and muddy pants. The officer had assisted about an hour earlier in a search for man in a muddy field who had allegedly stolen a vehicle. The man in the backseat seemed to fit the description of the man police were looking for. But when police tried to interview the man, he kept giving them false names. He didn’t have any identification on him.

The end of April means the start of the warm season garden. It may still be too early to set out heatloving plants like tomatoes, geraniums and marigolds, but you can continue to seed cool season carrots, lettuce, kale, radish and cabbage into the vegetable garden and add flowering vines like clematis and roses, and all types of shrubs from evergreen conifers to fully blooming rhododendrons, and from fragrant lilacs to ground-hugging heathers. If you’re planning a new landscape or improving a garden bed, here are the most asked questions to help with your dreaming and scheming:
THE GARDENER
Warm up to your seasonal garden the beds or the plants staked up properly when they bloom. I think shrubs with be less work. What flowering shrubs do you suggest for long-lasting color? K.L., Puyallup
A. Start with forsythia for February flowers, then add viburnums, lilacs, rhododendrons and azaleas for years of spring color. In the summer, celebrate the easy care spiraeas and landscape roses, such as the Flower Carpet shrub roses or Knock Out roses as these are the disease resistant varieties that will never need spraying. As fall approaches enjoy the big, bold blooms of hydrangeas, including the cream and peach flowers of the sun-loving pee gee hydrangea and the fiery fall foliage of the Oak leak hydrangea. Winter color from Beauty Berry and cotoneaster will offer eye candy during

the darkest days. There is an easy way to make sure something is in flower every day of the year in your garden – just visit a nursery once a month and invest in the shrubs that happen to be looking their best. One year and a dozen shrubs later you’ll have year long color in the landscape.
Q. We just moved into a new home. There is a rocky slope with giant boulders and it is in a sunny spot. I would like to turn this into a rock garden but I am not very good at weeding. What plants are easy to grow on a sunny slope and could keep down the weeds? A. You can enjoy the bright blooms of creeping phlox on a sunny slope and this low growing evergreen will help to crowd out weeds as it flows over the ground. For tiny crevices poke bits of sedum Angelina into cracks and openings before weed seeds can
get a start. The pure white blooms of Iberis candytuft are drought resistant as are most plants with gray foliage such as the creeping thymes, artemisia, lamb’s ear and basket-of-gold alyssum montanum with fragrant yellow flowers. Don’t stop with just perennial plants. Low growing rock garden tulips will return year after year and if you amend the soil with peat moss, then water well the first year after planting you may be able to grow heathers on a sunny slope. The best way to control weeds in any rock garden is to hand pull young weeds in early spring before they can set seed.
Q. I have a problem area in a shaded bed. There are also tree roots that make this a very dry shade situation. So far I have already watched azaleas, pieris, fuchsias and rhododendrons die in this area. I am done wasting money and want to know what plants will survive. R.M., Auburn A. Dry shade can be the happy home of native plants like sword ferns and huckleberries or you
can loosen the soil, add some compost and introduce some aggressive groundcovers like vinca minor, crane’s bill geranium or lamium. You will need to water the first summer after planting in dry shade to establish the root system of your new plants. If colorful blooms is what you’re after consider placing large pots under the trees or hang baskets of flowers suspended from the overhanging tree branches. Depending on how much shade and how much compost you are willing to add to the soil, you can also grow tough perennials such as euphorbias, peonies, hellebores, lady’s mantle and hosta. A mulch such as bark chips on top of the soil will help to seal in moisture and keep out weeds. Dry shade is not a death sentence, but it is a prison where only the very tough will survive. THUNDERBIRDS’ TROOCK SIGNS WITH DALLAS STARS OF NHL Seattle Thunderbirds right wing Branden Troock has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. Troock had 58 points on 24 goals and 34 assists this season for the T-Birds. He had seven points on four goals and three assists in nine playoff games. In four seasons with the T-Birds. Troock has appeared in 144 games and has 45 goals and 56 assists for 101 points. “Early in his career Branden had to overcome a number of injuries, but this year fans got to see his skill and potential for a full season,” T-Birds General Manager Russ Farwell said in an April 15 media release. “Dallas obviously saw the huge potential he has and the big upside he has to reach his full potential. It is always great to see our players get a chance to move on and play at the next level and we wish him luck as he starts his career as a pro player.” Troock was originally selected by the Stars in the fifth round, 134th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.
Kent-Meridian High School’s D’Mon Lee believes he was “born to run.” Technically, Lee has been running since before he was born when his mother, Monique Lee, ran a collegiate race while pregnant. Monique set records in high school and college in Alabama, and has passed on those genes to her son. Lee – a compact, quiet senior with braided black hair – started running in elementary school as a lunchtime activity, but his mother recognized his potential and encouraged him to continue in middle school and high school. He’s gained deserved attention in his senior year of track and field from coaches by cutting down his 100-meter time. Since returning from off season practice, he’s brought it down from 11.7 seconds to
11.2 and put himself in a solid position for placing at the Class 4A state meet in May. He went from running on the junior varsity team for his freshman, sophomore and junior years to being ranked fourth in the West Central District in the 100, and 16th in the state. During his most recent event, the Oregon Relays on April 18 at Eugene’s Hayward Field, Lee cut his time by half a second, dropping it to 11.2. “These guys are the fastest of the fastest,” he remembers thinking. He placed in the top two in his heat to advance to the top eight and finished eighth. In high school, he hit a proverbial wall in training, when he stagnated for his sophomore and junior seasons at 11.7 and 11.6 times, unable to shave anything else off. “I almost stopped running,” Lee says. You hear your heartbeat, you hear your breathing,” he says. “Even if I come in last, it feels good to run because it comes naturally.”

While Kentwood High School’s Rex Norris is best known as coach of the Conk football team, his other true love is rugby. He’s been coaching the sport for longer than he’s coached football, including coaching the U.S. men’s team. He even met his wife while on the road coaching rugby. So when asked about his favorite moments from the game, it takes him a bit of time to get his thoughts together. Many of his favorite moments are when teams he’s
coached have come back from major deficits, or simply didn’t give up in the face of overwhelming odds. When the Kent Crusader girls rugby team coached by Norris came back from a serious deficit in the second half of the 2013 national semifinals to win the match, “there wasn’t a dry eye in the place,” Norris says. “They (the opponent) had 500 people there cheering them on and we

Norris says that while football is fun, he’s stayed involved in rugby because of the whole body nature of the activity compared to football. “In rugby it’s more of a whole person, their ability to communicate, their confidence levels. It’s a much more personal game. You see every person’s face, you can’t hide behind a mask,“ Norris says.
