ARLINGTON — As of Tuesday, April 8, the Arlington Community Food Bank marked a full week of operation and customer service in its new location, which volunteers reported was hectic even without the addition of clients from Oso and Darrington, but the Food Bank continued to receive donations from members of those communities, and has been able to serve all of its clients with a new and improved customer service layout. “Our new store is a shade under 5,000 square feet, which is about the same size as the place we were renting,” said Jerrie Inman, a member of the Arlington Community Food Bank Board of Directors, of the permanent new facility at 19118 63rd Ave. NE. “It’s still twice or three times what we were used to at Haller Park, though.” Among the accouterments that Inman touted were a more spacious and aesthetically appealing front lobby check-in area, where clients wait their turn to be guided through the aisles by volunteers, as well as a more efficient and customer-centric approach to shopping itself. “Before, everyone got the same standard

box of supplies, unless we knew they were a really huge family, in which case they got a slightly larger box of the same stuff,” Inman said. “Now, it’s much more like an actual grocery store. You don’t just get handed a box of vegetables. They’re now sorted by varieties like peas, greens and corn, and you can pick which ones you want. As this process goes on, we’ll have a better idea of which types of food are more popular, and we’ll be able to stock our shelves accordingly.” According to Inman, the Food Bank usually sees a decline in clients following the winter holidays, but their customer traffic almost inevitably starts picking back up by March. “It’s easier to get here in nicer weather, which I suspect might make a difference to the homeless,” said Inman, who noted that the Food Bank remains relatively centrally located in the Arlington community, in the business park area surrounding the Arlington Municipal Airport. “We have about 80 volunteers, from the storage shelves and admin to the shopping floor, but we could always use more.” Cindy Reece, treasurer of the Arlington Community Food Bank, explained that the Food Bank’s volunteers see their service to their clients as a form of service to

Murray and Cantwell issued a joint statement that day, expressing their appreciation to Obama for his decision to visit the area on

April 22. “We are confident that President Obama will see what we have seen: The tremendous resolve and determination of the people of Oso, Darrington and Arlington in the face of tragedy,” Murray and Cantwell said. “The President’s visit is another important step in demonstrating the federal government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the families, first responders, volunteers and businesses, as they recover from this disaster. We appreciate the decision to make major disaster resources available, and by the IRS to grant tax relief, and we’ll continue to work for the federal government to provide every resource possible for these communities.” This news came after the Army Corps of Engineers had coordinated with Snohomish County to commence construction on a temporary berm, to reduce flood impacts in the slide area, in the area of State Route 530, near milepost 37, at C Post Road and 312th Street NE. Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews have assisted in these efforts by clearing debris from the search areas, and WSDOT itself is working with Snohomish County to develop a plan for clearing State Route 530 after all the search efforts are complete. Three Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Centers are open to assist residents who have been affected by the Oso mudslide — at the Arlington Public Works Administration Building at 154 W. Cox Ave., the

Darrington Ranger District Office at 1405 Emens Ave. and the Oso Fire Station at 21824 State Route 530 NE — Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents should register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or logging onto www. disasterassistance.gov. At the close of business on April 9, FEMA reported that 377 individuals or families had registered for assistance. While help is still needed, officials are reporting that the best way to support the slide recovery effort is through a monetary donation, and a list of trusted charities collecting such funds is included on Snohomish County’s SR530 slide resources page at http://snohomishcountywa. gov/530Slide. County officials added that Darrington is literally out of room to house physical donations, so those who wish to offer services or equipment should call 425-388-5139. The weekend will bring a trio of Oso community fundraisers. The Mirkwood & Shire Cafe’s benefit concert series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, for $5 at the door at 117 E. Division St., while the Viking Hall at 1331 Pioneer Hwy. in Silvana will host a charity breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon that same Saturday for Oso firefighter Seth Jefferds. On Sunday, April 13, the Norpoint Shooting Center at 8620-A 172nd St. NE in Arlington will be serving up an Oso relief barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $5 a plate, with $20 for raffle tickets to try and win a Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm.

SMOKEY POINT — Snohomish County Council member Ken Klein had planned on addressing the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, April 8, about his first few months in office, but as the Arlington native noted, “All our lives were radically changed by what happened in Oso.” Klein praised agencies ranging from the helicopter pilots of Snohomish County Search & Rescue, for retrieving so many survivors on March 22, to the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation, for serving as a conduit for the community’s financial donations, while echoing compliments he’s heard from members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “FEMA couldn’t stop talking about how professional and focused everyone involved in the recovery efforts has been,” Klein said. “The people here saw prob-

lems and wanted to get them solved.” Klein credited Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert with helping to implement a disaster recovery center in Arlington similar to those that had proven successful in Stanwood and Camano Island, before frankly acknowledging that “Darrington was in a precarious economic condition before the slide, and it continues to be after the slide.” Klein reported that, in response, parties as diverse as longtime political figure Bob Drewel and Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin have conferred with groups such as the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County, to develop clear paths for Darrington to succeed moving forward, even long after the ongoing disaster recovery efforts have been completed. “The first thing that has to happen is that State Route 530 needs to be reopened as quickly and sensitively as possible,” Klein said. “As

Darrington goes, so too could Arlington go, so it’s in all of our best interests to ensure that Darrington is a vibrant community.” Klein also advocated paving the Mountain Loop Highway, to provide a reliable alternate access way, and preserving the historic Green Mountain Lookout, the latter of which he praised a number of local members of Congress for supporting. “You can still go there and see some amazing views,” said Klein, who touted the tourism, recreation and quality of life benefits of such a feature, before moving onto a proposal to open state lands to sustainable logging. “The last lumber sale from that area was 2010, and the Hampton Mill is only at 60 percent capacity.” Klein likewise called for a review of the list of roads that have been closed due to a lack of funds, characterizing them as just as essential to developing a recreational economy for Darrington. “And I know you’ve heard

about it before, but a manufacturing and light industrial center in Arlington and north Marysville would bring in up to 20,000 jobs,” Klein said. “A lot of Darrington residents already commute to Boeing, so if we could bring those aerospace jobs closer to them, it would benefit everyone.” Three months into his first term on the County Council, Klein still sees one of his primary roles as serving as a conduit between the needs of the local communities and the county, state and federal levels of government that can serve them. In terms of non-Oso priorities, Klein is concerned with securing funding for infrastructure improvements to the Stillaguamish Valley as a whole, as well as the business that could be brought in by allowing commercial air service to Paine Field. “I’m a man of faith, so if you could pray for me, that would be important,” said Klein, when asked how citizens could help him do his

William Edward “Bill” Welsh, 66 yrs., of Arlington passed away at the Oso Landslide on March 22, 2014. Bill will be remembered for his smile, caring ways and big heart! Bill would “give you the shirt off his back” and would do anything for family and friends. Bill was born to Tom & Mary Welsh at Burlington Memorial in Skagit County on October 8, 1947. Bill attended all his school years in Sedro-Woolley, WA graduating in 1966. Bill was active in track and football where he set high school athletic records. Upon graduation Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany for one year followed by another year in Vietnam, returning home in May 1969. After his military years Bill worked at Safeway. While working at Safeway Barbara was introduced to Bill by a mutual friend. They married on August 28, 1971 in Sedro-Woolley, WA. Their first home was in Mount Vernon and later they moved back to Sedro-Woolley until moving to Darrington in 1973 where Bill worked for Summit Timber Company. He was then hired by Whitley Evergreen Mobile

where he worked for 18 years and lived in Arlington, WA at the time of his death. Bi l l a nd Barbara shared many activities together. They bowled in various leagues through their marriage. Bill golfed for several years with the Redmond Eagles. He was also involved with Boys Club sports and umpiring for ASA. He is survived by his wife Barbara Welsh, his two sons Christopher Welsh; Wayne Welsh and Stacie Locke and Josh; two grandchildren Alexander Welsh and Kyle Heirman. Brothers Daniel Welsh, Michael M. Shooting turns to homicide investigation ARLINGTON — Shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, the Arlington Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 6800 block of 188th Street NE, for reports of an assault with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 26-year-old Arlington woman with a gunshot wound to the head, and requested immediate medical attention by the Arlington Fire Department. The victim was transported by Arlington Fire personnel to the Arlington Municipal Airport, for airlift to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle by an awaiting Airlift Northwest helicopter. Just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, Arlington Police investigators were informed that the victim had passed away from injuries sustained in the shooting. Identification of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of her death, will be released by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Anyone

Arlington plans Easter Egg Hunt The city of Arlington Recreation Department is planning the annual Easter Egg Hunt for Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. in the open space on the sound end of the Arlington Airport. Children ages 12 and younger are invited to gather the thousands of plastic eggs that arrive for Easter. The Easter Bunny will be at the event, so bring your camera for photos with the Easter Bunny. MARYSVILLE — The Lakewood Cougars were defeated by Archbishop Murphy, 4-2, on April 7. The Cougars’ baseball season has been rough since it

started on March 15. Lakewood was 2-6 overall when it met Archbishop Murphy, which was 8-2 overall, on April 7, but it was the best the Cougars looked all season. “It was good to compete against one of the better

teams in the conference,” Lakewood head coach Jake Kon said. “It was good to see what we can do in the game.” The Cougars looked good at the bats, and on defense, but it was executing in the later innings which cost their win.

“I thought our approach at the plate was good, but we just need to execute,” Kon said. Lakewood started strong and held Archbishop Murphy down for six innings in the eight-inning game, but an untimely rally by Archbishop Murphy in the final two innings snatched the win from the Cougars’ claws. “For the first six innings, we held them at bay,” Kon said. “We were able to squeak some runs across, but I think we left a couple out there, that we could have added on, that would have helped toward the end of the game.” The first inning couldn’t have started better for Lakewood. “The potential for this team is right up there with anybody else,” Kon said. “They have enough talent to go and play against anybody.” Lakewood senior Drew Earnheart pitched well, and was backed up by strong fielding in the first inning. “Earnheart, our starter, went out there and threw well,” See COUGARS, PAGe 12

MARYSVILLE — The Lakewood boys soccer team was defeated by King’s, 3-0, on April 8. King’s displayed its dominance in the game from the start, by scoring a goal on Lakewood within minutes of the first half. “They’re a pretty organized team,” Lakewood head coach Bryce Barker said. “They’re quite a bit taller this year.” Barker said the Cougars were missing their competitive edge in the game. “Starting two minutes in and giving up a 40-yard free kick goal can’t be acceptable,” he said. “If you’re trying to compete in the league, specifically on your homefield, a lackluster effort is not going to get you anywhere.” It didn’t get any better for Lakewood throughout the remainder of the match.

The Cougars struggled in possession of the ball, while trying to keep it out of their side of the field. “We expected what we saw out of them,” Barker said. “They dictated the pace of the game, and controlled the ball through the majority of it.” The slick conditions of the turf didn’t help Lakewood either. The Cougars frequently lost their footing and slipped during the game. When Lakewood was able to possess, the King’s defense seemed to be one step ahead of the Cougars’ offense. “It seemed like every time we received the ball, they had one guy there pressuring and another guy there to win the ball off of the second touch,” Barker said. “Offensively, they had all the space occupied anytime they needed to break pressure in order to counter us.” As the first half was waning, King’s See LAKeWOOD, PAGe 11

ARLINGTON — Arlington High School senior Max Gray’s flash football charity event received tremendous support from the Arlington community on April 4, in support of Jovon Mangual. The charity event was for Mangual’s mother Jonielle Spillers. Mangual went missing during the Oso mudslide on March 22, and funds collected during the charity went directly to Spillers. “The main reason is to support the people that really need it,” Gray said. “I think the Spiller family will be very happy about this.” Gray has coached AYFA football as part of his senior project, and has organized flash football games. A few days after the mudslide on March 22, Gray thought of a way to reach out in support of Mangual. “I just thought a perfect way to have a fundraiser is to play football,” he said. “So three or four days ago I thought, ‘Let’s start something and have it before spring break ends,’ and it got pretty big.” The event featured 15-minute rounds of flash football, started by an opening prayer service and a commemorative speech by Gray. “People have been coming in since 10 a.m.,” Gray said. “They have just been waiting and warming up, and we raised about $3,400 in an hour.” At the end of the event, the charity raised $4,537. Gray’s initial goal was $2,500. “It was just incredible,” Max’s mother, Bridget Gray, said. “It was more then we could have ever hoped for.” Max’s event was supported by Lily Bleu’s Barbecue which also helped raise funds for the charity. “I graduated from the Arlington School District,” Lily Bleu Barbecue owner Bill Hoerner said. “You gotta do something for the community. It’s a small town.” Hoerner was also

The event wasn’t easy to pull off for Max, who planned the event for only five days. “Each day was getting overwhelming,” Max’s father, Bill Gray, said. “He is just my inspiration. Every day is something new.” When Max announced the event via social networking, the response by the community was as generous as it was shocking. “A lot of people here did not know how to help out,” Gray said. “That’s why there are a lot of people here to day.” “It was difficult. Ever since I announced this event on Facebook, it has been non-stop calling people, posting flyers and advertising,” Gray said. “It was a lot of work. “We tried to figure out how to make all the games work, with as many people that came,” Gray said. “There were three or four strategies, and I changed it last night.” Gray said he was supported by his family, the Arlington High School Grid Iron Club and Lily Bleu’s Barbecue for catering. “I basically did most of it, but there were a lot of people involved,” he said.

Lakewood is going to lose its senior-ladened core next year. With that, Barker is thinking ahead in his team’s development. “We’re going to try and get as much as we can out of this group,” Barker said. “We’re going to lose a lot of seniors this year.

We’re going to make sure we are getting those young guys the experience they need to step in and continue competing.” For now, Barker is prioritizing in the development of the soccer program at Lakewood. “Right now, we’re playing with

a real shallow bench, so we’re getting the younger guys the opportunity to fill in roles,” Barker said. “We have seen a lot of good things out of the guys.” As of April 10, Lakewood’s overall record is 2-4 overall, and 2-3 in the league.

MARYSVILLE — Victor Fernandez’s first job in the automotive industry was in 1994, and 10 years later, he opened the Marysville Ford dealership in 2004 as its coowner. Another 10 years later, Fernandez is the sole owner of Marysville Ford, and on Wednesday, April 9, he was joined by his employees, his colleagues and his family in breaking ground at the site of the Marysville Ford

dealership’s new location, just north of the Marysville Honda dealership, on the west side of Smokey Point Boulevard. Fernandez was joined not only by his wife Sarah and sons Tony and Ethan in grabbing golden shovels, but also by Tyler Mildren of Perlo Construction, who will serve as project manager for the anticipated nine months of construction between now and when the new building’s doors are expected to open to the public, as well as

Gene Mildren of the Mildren Design Group, which served as architects for the roughly 50,000-square-foot facility. “Marysville Ford is the fastest growing Ford store in Snohomish County,” said Xavier Cortes, general sales manager of the Marysville Ford dealership, which currently remains at 3520 136th St. NE. “People will want to come here because of new services like Quick Lane, which allows customers to come in and get their oil changed without waiting, as well as the huge new selection that we’ll have here. We’ll be able to stock a lot more inventory.” Among the other planned features that Cortes touted were the new facility’s expanded lounge area for adults and play area for children, complete with a coffee shop and a Ford merchandise store within the dealership itself. “We’ve been waiting for this to happen for the past five years,” Cortes said. “Through planning and preparation, what was once a dream is now a fact.” As for Fernandez, he still cites his humble origins as an immigrant from Columbia

who came to America at the age of 18 with only $300 and a suitcase to his name.

“When you start with nothing, you really appreciate a business that serves

you well,” Fernandez said. “I want to be that kind of business.”

MARYSVILLE — United Way of Snohomish County’s free tax preparation at Goodwill’s Marysville Job Training and Education Center will remain available through Tuesday, April 15. Volunteer tax preparers are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and have helped more than 291 North County households file their taxes this year. The free service is one of the ways in which United Way is helping people reach and maintain financial stability. Three quarters of the way into the 2014 tax season, volunteers working out of Goodwill’s Job Training and Education Center had already helped residents get back $579,275 in refunds, including $175,517 through the Earned Income Tax Credit. The average household income for those making use of these services in Marysville is a little more than $25,000 a year. Collectively, they have saved an estimated $52,800 in preparation fees. Individuals who want to file their taxes themselves can use a free website, set up by United Way for Snohomish County residents at http://t. uwsc.org/myfreetaxes_snoco. This free service is available for households earning $52,000 or less. Although no appointment is necessary, taxpayers must bring a picture ID, a Social Security card or tax identification number for everyone on the return, W2s or other income statements from all employers, any 1099 forms, records of student loan payments, records of payments for educational expenses such as college tuition, mortgage interest and property tax statements, a bank account number to receive your refund via direct deposit, last year’s tax return — if you have it — and the name, address and tax ID number for your child care provider. ARLINGTON — Arlington’s third annual Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt will fill the Haller Middle School stadium with thousands of plastic eggs on the evening of Saturday, April 19. The gates are set to open at 7 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m., attendees 5 years old and younger will be released onto the field for a “pre-egg hunt,” returning this year by popular demand, before the lights go out for the egg hunt for all ages at 8 p.m., come rain or shine, at a cost of $5 per person, with all the money raised going toward the American Cancer Society. AHS senior receives Student of Color scholarship shouldn’t let the color of their skin hold them back in achieving their goals of attending college and developing their career. Participants were then released to attend smaller sessions on specific topics. Two of the three sessions Horrer chose to attend were Leadership 101 and How to Choose a Career. “It was like they set it up to give you a chance to experience a day in college, going from class to class,” Horrer said. Student participants

gathered again in the EvCC gym to receive awards. According to Horrer, who is half-Navajo, he dropped his jaw and ran down the bleachers when his name was called to receive the Have a Dream Foundation Scholarship, due to his excitement. Seniors selected for the scholarship must be a student of color and meet the GPA requirement. Applicants also submitted an essay of 500 words on the topic of “My Dream and My Plan to Achieve It,” with

reference to any unique circumstance, hardship or obstacle they overcame. Horrer’s dream is to become a teacher, “to help the youth achieve their maximum potential educationally and personally.” He wants to give back to his community and teach kids important life lessons as well as information. Horrer didn’t think a four-year college would be an option for him until Laura Piercy, who is the school-to-work counselor at Arlington High School, started planting the seed. She met with him several times to discuss his dreams, plans and options. She also took time to help Horrer and his parents navigate college, FAFSA and scholarship applications, since no
