Life After GrafďŹ ti Garage

Posted online Weds., April 9 Article and Photos By Todd Matthews, Editor A little more than five months have passed since downtown Tacoma's 'Graffiti Garage' officially became off-limits to, well, graffiti. For five years, the privately-owned garage, located at 723-737 Broadway, was a haven for local street artists to show their work. Visitors were treated to vibrant (and rotating) displays of local street art, and artists could legally spray paint their work on the garage's walls, floors, pillars, and ceiling without breaking any laws. That changed last year, however, when City of Tacoma officials announced the property owner (citing concerns over safety, liability, and feedback from neighbors) was turning the garage into, well, a garage. As of Nov. 1, it no longer was legal to spray paint on the site. The Tacoma Daily Index stopped by the former Graffiti Garage this week to see what it looks like now that all the artists have gone away. For starters, a fresh coat of off-white-colored paint covers nearly every surface, cloaking the site's street art history. And yet, there is still some evidence of graffiti and street art on the walls, ceiling, and even the fare boxes and garbage can. It seems the Graffiti Garage hasn't entirely given up the ghost.

Port of Tacoma picks 3 recipients Posted online Weds., April 9 Images Courtesy Port of Tacoma The Port of Tacoma recognized the 2014 Summit Award recipients during the organization's annual breakfast Wednesday morning in downtown Tacoma. The awards honor Port of Tacoma customers and tenants for corporate achievement and business excellence in three categories of leadership:

Business Magnet – A Port of Tacoma customer or member of the supply chain (shipper, transportation or logistics service provider, developer) for business development efforts and investments that lead to recognizable increase in business volume or new business opportunities for the Port of Tacoma, and have a positive economic effect for the citizens of Pierce County. Environmental Stewardship – A Port of Tacoma customer or tenant for a project, program or initiative that supports Pierce County's sustainability and honors biodiversity and the interconnected nature of industry, people, wildlife and natural systems. Livable Community – A Port of Tacoma customer or tenant for a project, program or initiative that demonstrates the business community's positive contribution to Pierce County through social responsibility. Criteria include philanthropy and charitable giving, community service and employee volunteering, community engagement and outreach, and employee development. The recipients this year are PCC Logistics (Business Magnet), which has provided warehousing, distribution, and logistics services to Port customers since 1998, expanded from one Tacoma facility to four, employed more than 50 people last year, and handled almost 6,500 containers through Port terminals last year; Transportation Club of Tacoma (Livable Community), which was founded in 1926, serves Tacoma and Pierce County charitable organizations while educating and connecting the

3 bidders emerge for downtown Tacoma parking contract Posted online Tues., April 8 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Three companies have expressed interest in a contract to manage the City of Tacoma's public parking operations. Currently, the City of Tacoma has one contract with Republic Parking NW to manage its offstreet parking operations, which include 1,700 parking stalls in six garages, and 216 parking stalls in three surface lots, and a separate contract with Xerox, Inc. for its on-street parking operations, which includes 2,200 parking stalls located within the downtown parking enforcement area, according to bid documents prepared by City staff. Of that total, 1,800 spots are metered using approximately 160 Parkeon Strada pay stations. According to a legal notice and request for proposals published last month in the Tacoma Daily Index, the City plans to consolidate those operations to a single primary vendor under a six-year, $12-million contract. The City of Tacoma's Public Works Department will continue to oversee the parking facilities and the operating company awarded the contract. The contractors that responded to the request for proposals are LAZ Parking (Seattle, Wash.), Republic Parking Northwest (Tacoma, Wash.), and Diamond Parking Services (Tacoma, Wash.). The bid deadline expired at 11 a.m. on Tues., transportation industry, raised more than $1 million for the Emergency Food Network since 1999, distributed $145,000 in scholarships in the past 10 years, raised $15,000 for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Habitat for Humanity during a charity golf tournament last year; and Friends of Julia's

Recipients were selected by a panel of community and business leaders led by Petrich. The panel included Tacoma City Councilmember Robert Thoms, Port of Tacoma Endowed Chair Joel Baker, who leads research at the Center for Urban Waters, and Debbie Fischer of the Customs Brokers & International Freight Forwarders Association of Washington State.

Volunteers needed for Tacoma Historical Society exhibit center Posted online Weds., April 9 The Tacoma Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help run its new exhibit center in downtown Tacoma. The group's exhibit center, which opened last month at 919 Pacific Ave., is open 11 a.m. to 4

p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Volunteers would be responsible for greeting visitors, handling simple retail transactions, and general looking after the center. "As we expected, we've had an upsurge in numbers of visitors since we moved from our
