Colorado cadets forfeit vacation to build Freeland home By JUSTIN BURNETT South Whidbey Record Spring break isn’t always about partying on some faraway tropical beach. Some things are simply more important, and for 10 students from the United States Air Force Academy in
Colorado, that was helping to build a new home for Liz and Bruce Crouch in Freeland last week. The crew of cadets voluntarily spent their vacation pounding nails and slogging around a rainy construction site on Twin Oakes Lane, knowing full well how other college students across the country were spending their time off. In fact, several

Last month, the Island County commissioners backed away from $900,000 in grant funding to purchase beach access properties in the Glendale area of Clinton. On March 19, members of Island Beach Access and Whidbey Environmental Action Network, two separate private advocacy groups, informally asked the parks district for

The South Whidbey Edible Book Festival took a bite out of the cost of an outdoor basketball court. The festival, held for the second year in a row, raised $800 for the South Whidbey Parks and Aquatics Foundation to put toward the Rotary Club of South Whidbey’s basketball court. The festival showed off the work of 41 entries to about 150 attendees. Waldorf students set to explore Moab desert

Class raises money, challenges itself for upcoming journey to Utah By CELESTE ERICKSON South Whidbey Record Students in the eighthgrade class of Whidbey Island Waldorf School are preparing for their final journey together, and what an adventure it will be. The close-knit group, of which many have been together at the school since first grade, have been working in the community to
the lessons they have been working on this year. “The trip is physically and mentally challenging; it will show them how capable they are,” she said. The students put on two festivals — one required earning a food handler’s permit — a talent show and sold Christmas decorations to raise funds for the trip. Each student also completed a personal physical challenge to raise money for the trip. Students found sponsors in the community to support their challenge,
raise money for a week-long trip to the Moab desert in Utah this month. Teacher Angela Lindstrom, who has taught the class for eight years, said the trip is a rite of passage for the students. Each eighth-grade class at the school culminates with a class field trip, as it’s the graduating year for the students who move on to separate high schools the following year. Lindstrom said this year the 15-student class chose a trip that reflects many of
The presentations cover a variety of subjects including designing and building a solar panel energy source, making fused glass, photography and creating a website. Each student will show their findings during the presentation. “This experience not only enriches the student, but gives them such a strong foundation in formal inquiry, research methods and builds their confidence in public speaking, perfectly finishing their preparations for high school,” Weidendorf said. “Each year our students bring such a depth and breadth of awareness to their research and project presentations,” she continued. “It never fails to inspire both the adults and the other students here at WIWS.”

John’s challenge was to jump off of a dock into the winter water. “I’m most excited to go whitewater rafting,” he said. “I’m also looking forward to traveling with the class.” Students are also preparing for their presentations on April 3 and 4 at Clinton Community Hall, which are open to the school community. Sheila Weidendor f, school enrollment director, said in an email the projects are special for the students during a year “full of challenges and growth.” In the beginning of the year, each student picks a topic they want to explore for six months outside of the classroom. The student finds a mentor in the community to meet with them over the time period and learn from them.

which ranged from jumping off docks into the frigid winter water, unicycling seven miles through the Saratoga Woods, and tap dancing and singing for the first time. The students have raised money for the trip for more than a year, bringing in more than $16,000 to pay for the trip. The adventure will include a variety of activities including whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking, archery, rock climbing and rappelling. They will also hear and learn from Navajo elders. The students chose the trip to Moab for its natural wonders and quiet reflective time, Lindstrom said. This will be one of the last times they’re together, she added. “They are so ready and capable,” Lindstrom said of her students. “It’s a joy to see how much they can do through this time together.” Eighth-grade student John Thomas, 14, said he is looking forward to the trip and the many adventures

PARKS Field use plan gets user OK A divisive fight over field use and park access may come to an amicable end this month. After a youth soccer coach was banned from the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District properties for failing to follow parks staff direction, and the coach’s subsequent
pardon by the parks commissioners, a field use plan has been agreed upon by the parties involved. “All the user groups agreed that that met their requirements,” Commissioner Matt Simms said. Leaders from the school district, youth football, youth soccer, little league and ultimate met with parks staff and parks commissioners for three hours March 27. They went over when their groups use the fields, which fields are

needed and staff reasoning for closing them at certain times. Simms said they went over the field use plan line by line, page by page. As a result, the parks district now has an annual schedule outlining when and how many fields will be available. The general guideline is to keep at least one field open for each sport all year, except for baseball, which will have one field open from March to November. In the course of the meeting, it was discovered that two periods every year present a significant problem for the district and parks users: early March and most of October. Simms said those times see heavy use coupled with weather conditions that leave the fields at risk of excessive wear or turf disease. “We have both users and fields that are highly subject to damage,” Simms said. To tackle the issue, the
groups will meet with parks staff in late February and late September to discuss upcoming use and field restrictions. “We’re going to overcommunicate,” Simms said. The district kept in a clause that it will do its utmost to keep at least one field open, but reserved the right to close them all if conditions could lead to injury.
FREELAND Ace Hardware launches Oso aid Freeland Ace Hardware is collecting donations of food, water and hygiene supplies for the victims of the Oso landslide. Possible donations include dry pasta, canned goods, bottled water, paper products — plates, bowls, napkins and toilet paper — plastic utensils, socks, blankets, diapers and gas cards. NAS WHIDBEY Public comment period extended The U.S. Navy is extending the public comment period for the Northwest Training and Testing Draft Environmental Impact Statement until April 15 to allow the public more time to submit comments. Orca Network Obituaries announces arrival of gray whales The “Saratoga” gray whales have returned to Whidbey and Camano island waters for their annual three-month feeding foray in Puget Sound. Whidbey-based Orca Network’s whale sighting network received its first report of a North Puget Sound gray whale on Feb. 28 in the water off Langley. Additional sightings over the past few weeks confirmed the presence of eight of the 10 to 12 individual gray whales that frequent the area each spring. Cascadia Research of Olympia has studied this population of Puget Sound gray whales for decades, identifying individuals by the markings on the underside of their flukes, as well as by the patterns of barnacles, scars, and markings on their backs. One whale named “Patch,” or number 49, was first identified by Cascadia in Whidbey waters in 1991 and is a favorite of many local whale watchers. He is easily identifiable by the large white patch on his right side, as well as white patches on the underside of his flukes. This small group of resident gray whales typically arrives in the region in early March and stays through the end of May or early June, feeding on ghost shrimp along the

Orca Network’s whale sighting network has followed the travels of these gray whales, as well as orcas and other whales in the region, for decades. The group recently opened the Langley Whale Center on Second Street and Anthes Avenue, one block up from Whale Bell Park. The Langley Whale Center features displays and videos about gray whales, orcas and the many other marine mammals of the Salish Sea. Also on display are marine mammal bones and specimens collected and prepared by Orca Network’s Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network, to help visitors understand the anatomy and natural history of the marine mammals who share the island waters.

Editorial Letters Thanks South End parks a s House community treasure, Ryan’ concert a success levy deserves support The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District will ask voters to dig a bit deeper into their pocketbooks this month. The only measure on the April special election ballot, parks commissioners have proposed a levy-lid lift to cover the rising cost of maintenance and operations needs. A modest hike of 3 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, and the district’s first increase ever — if passed — this is a reasonable request the public should honor. Formed in 1983, South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District is one the South End’s great public treasures with six different facilities encompassing more than 320 acres: Community Park, the Sports Complex, Trustland Trails, Deer Lake Public Beach, Lone Lake Public Beach, Goss Lake Public Beach and the district’s headquarters on Maxwelton Road. From skateboarders, swimmers and hikers to dog walkers, fishermen and a plethora of youth sports teams, these properties are enjoyed on a community scale and deserve support. The current levy rate sits at 15 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation and has been static since 1987 The additional 3 cents would add about $115,000 to district coffers and cost a homeowner with a $300,000 home $54 per year. Voters should note that the proposed levy hike is solely for maintenance and operations needs — the everyday cost of business of keeping the lawns mowed, the staff paid and all the properties listed above open to the public. The increase would not go toward capital projects, such as the ongoing discussion over a community pool or the more recent discussion concerning the purchase of beach access in Glendale. While these are largely separate issues, there are some links as the upkeep of new acquisitions would then fall under the umbrella of maintenance and operations monies. The board should consider these matters carefully, as it would be disappointing to approve one increase only to face another a few years down the road. So far, the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District has not disappointed, and the fantastic facilities under its purview are a credit to the agency. This is one tax hike that deserves support. Ballots will go out April 2, and must be postmarked or in a drop box no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. to spend $10 million building an event center when the strategic plan seems to indicate that $8 million would need to be generated annually in income, when routine county maintenance, better fairgrounds management and usage might be more appropriate? Won’t 249,000 more annual visitors to Langley negatively impact our lives and the ferry? Why did the recent public “presentation” at the fairgrounds change to a comment forum? Why were the details of this 115-page plan glossed over? Did the organizers just want to diffuse public dissent? Why did the opposition have to advertise for the meeting? The icing on the cake, however, is that written comments taken at the meeting will not be used to modify the plan before its presentation to the Island County commissioners. Comments will only be attached to the new plan when it’s presented in its original form to the board in April. Why should the steering committee leaders care about my opinion? I just scrape and paint coun-
ty property so that barn exhibitors animals don’t eat the peeling paint. I only put aside my job, hobbies and life for several very intense days known as the fair to volunteer, so families can see sheep sheared or learn to spin wool into yarn. I have nothing to gain by opposing this fairgrounds plan, no aspirations for public office, no monetary gain. I do stand to lose my free time, my peace of mind and the good memories that I associate with county fairs starting with my grandfather, a Future Farmers of America leader. Time does not stand still. Fairgrounds change and evolve. But perhaps we’d be better served with a plan that honors the history of this property by reuse, repurposing and renovating rather than reimagining. Thank you to the steering committee members that listened at Wednesday’s meeting. As for the others, if you ask for the community’s opinions, do try to act like you care. Richard ‘Mickey’ McGuire
Mickey McGuire passed away peacefully on March 24, 2014. He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Ashland, Neb., to Clyde and Ida (Cave) McGuire. He is survived and dearly loved by his nephews Warren (Sarah)
Thiem of Bozeman, Mont., and Danny (Jay) Johnson of Lincoln, Neb., and his nieces, all from the Lincoln area: Joyce (Danny) Stanley, Jackie (Roger) Mars, Diana (Steve) Sillman, Kathy Holdsworth. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Mildred, Marie, Hazel, Wesley, Harold, Harvey and Robert. Mickey is also survived by his many friends from his beloved Whidbey Island. When recently asked what he would like people to know about him, he balked and declared, “That’s ancient history. Nobody wants to know all that old stuff. I want people to know how much I loved living on Whidbey Island and how much I enjoyed meeting and chatting with my customers at Payless.” Mickey often said, especially on a sunny day when the mountains were out in all their glory, “You sure don’t
have to wonder why this is the perfect place to live.” But “ancient history” is interesting, so here are some things about Mickey you’ll enjoy. He grew up mainly in the Lincoln, Neb., area and wore a Nebraska Cornhuskers sweatshirt almost every day since he moved to Maple Ridge Assisted Living Community. In college he majored in literature and wrote beautiful poetry, one of which he could still recite from memory. For many years he worked for TransCon Lines setting up new offices and performing audits. This job found him traveling extensively throughout the United States. In the early 1970s, Mickey transferred to Seattle for a permanent position that didn’t include travel and that was when he “discovered” Whidbey Island. It wasn’t long before he retired from his job

He soon realized he didn’t want to spend summers away from Whidbey and found his dream job at Payless Foods. And that’s where most of you met him. During most of his life, Mickey had a “travel bug.” He took many extended vacations to Europe, sometimes spending a month or more exploring there. You may have heard him tell about seeing the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona or the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. Mickey’s personality was as colorful as the life he lived. He was funny and had such a quick wit. He was a true and loyal friend and he loved people, especially those he met and knew on Whidbey. Mickey

Wolves hand Falcons first loss By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record The island rivalry lived up to its billing between the South Whidbey and Coupeville boys soccer teams Friday, March 28. Coupeville recovered from an early deficit to defeat South Whidbey 2-1 in a match that could affect both teams’ playoff chances. “Being a senior, it was one of the more painful things I’ve gone through,” said Falcon senior forward Trey Adams. “For some reason, that’s how it goes against Coupeville,” he later added. South Whidbey struck first with an early score by junior midfielder Jeff Meier on an assist from junior forward Kai da Rosa. From there, the Falcons continued with a barrage of shots on goal, wracking up 22 in the match. But Coupeville’s defense held together and managed to knock away several shots. Robbins praised the Wolves’ goalie Joel Walstad for deflecting several wouldbe scores. “He stopped some tough shots,” Robbins said. Yet for all the firepower of South Whidbey, Coupeville’s stifled offense broke through more times. The first Wolves
score was late in the first half on a shot well outside the goalie’s box by Josiah Campbell that tied the game going into halftime. “It was one of those goals where you shake your head and say the soccer gods weren’t smiling on us,” Robbins said of the first Coupeville goal. South Whidbey continued to press the issue, firing shot after shot and controlling the field. Coupeville managed only four shots on goal in the match, but made them count. The second Wolves’ goal came in a transition run. A South Whidbey defender went down after some contact, leaving Coupeville with a 2-on-1 opportunity at the net with Zane Bundy scoring on an assist from Campbell. Adams, one of the Falcons’ co-captains, was sidelined for the final 20 minutes of the match after a slide tackle tweaked his ankle. Watching from the bench was agonizing as South Whidbey’s playoff position became uncertain. “I had to sit there and watch the team fall apart,” Adams said. Between the perceived missed call and an argued offside penalty that negated an open look by da Rosa,

Snow Queen redux BY PATRICIA DUFF Special for The Record
One of the main thrusts of “The Snow Queen” is about what one friend will do for another. South Whidbey dance gurus Asharaine Machala and Charlene Brown have been friends ever since they founded Whidbey Island Dance Theatre in 1991. That friendship explains Machala’s current predicament of coming out of her quite-satisfying retirement to revive “The Snow Queen,” a theatrical ballet she conceived and choreographed for the first time 18 years ago. At a recent rehearsal at Whidbey Island Dance Theatre’s space in the Langley Middle School building, Machala answered the looming question: “Why now?” “Well, I didn’t want to do it,” she said flatly. “I was retired.” Here she smiled and grabbed her red, pixie-cut hair in a gesture of: “I don’tknow-why-the-heck-I’mdoing-this-again!” “Finally I said ‘Yes’ and I don’t know why,” she said, laughing. “Well, Charlene asked me. That’s why.” “The Snow Queen” is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s coming-of-age story about friendship and innocence, love and strength in the face of hardship. “The Snow Queen” The show opens Friday, April 4 and plays at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays through Sunday, April 13. Machala moved to the island in 1989, and came out of retirement — the first time — when she and Brown brought the dance world to the South End. Eventually, Machala said she needed a change from the company’s mainstay, “The Nutcracker,” and created “The Snow Queen” in 1996, which became the first production at the then-brand new Whidbey Island Center for the Arts in 1998. “When I did it originally I was cognizant of what the needs of the company were,” Machala said. “Now Charlene has a fairly young company of girls. They don’t have a lot of experience, so I’ve adapted everything for them.” Machala takes advantage of the youth of the ensemble and has created playful, theatrical movement that is fun

Brown said the timing was right. “WICA had asked me if I had anything for April and coincidentally I had just recently pulled out the backdrops from “The Snow Queen,” which had not been unrolled since 1998. They were beautiful; no cracks or anything. It just seemed like it was meant to be,” Brown said. Even though she had to come out of retirement again, Machala said that she sees the production as a gift to the community. “Dancers who were in it years ago would come up to me and tell me how much it affected them,” Machala said. “That was so cool — that it would be that meaningful to people. You always hope that what you give to people will be carried forward again.”

the focus should be on existing assets. “We’ve got to take care of what we are currently stewards of first, then look at some of these other properties,” said Director Doug Coutts, who referenced the district’s upcoming 3-cent levy increase request as the top priority. “Until we have our levy set, we’re not going to be purchasing any additional property,” he added. Edain said she hopes the parks district will sign off on any grant funding requests Island Beach Access makes in the attempt to buy the two beachfront parcels. “It carries more weight and is more likely to succeed if a body of government signs on, rather than just an NGO [non-governmental organization],” she said. Two commissioners, however, said they will diligently look into the efficacy of adding the property to its list. The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District manages more than 320 acres

across six sites: Trustland Trails, Community Park, Sports Complex, Deer Lake, Lone Lake and Goss Lake. None of the properties include shoreline access, which is an item in the parks district’s comprehensive plan. Several years ago the district conducted a survey of residents to identify their needs and desires. At the top of the list was a pool, which had a bond rejected by voters in 2008. One of the other priorities was shoreline areas and water access. But parks leaders see access to the shoreline as more of a port or county responsibility, and even included language to that effect in the comprehensive plan. From page 25 of the guiding document for the publiclyfunded district: “Active participation by the district in this county-wide process has the greatest near-term potential to address this significant area of need.” In the recent past, the South Whidbey Parks commissioners missed the opportunity to accept 300 feet of beach access on Mutiny Bay from Frank Robinson, and the property was eventually accepted by the Island County commissioners. Taking on another property, even one as enticing as beach access, remained a difficult
proposition for the commissioners. “There are lots of these things that come along,” said Commissioner Matt Simms. “In a world of unlimited budgets and unlimited resources, I’d love to have every one of them in our inventory.” “Our response time is slow,” he added. “Unfortunately that does not coincide with the windows of availability for properties like these.” Simms said the commissioners would likely review the property at their upcoming meeting Wednesday, April 16. Parks board president Don Wood, Simms and Coutts said taking on the additional maintenance costs of cleaning the property would have to be evaluated. But Edain said members of Island Beach Access were prepared to handle the regular cleanup at the site and would need help with larger projects like landshaping or possible clearing of sand from a boat ramp. “IBA is ready to tackle the day-to-day everyday maintenance of the property,” she said. “We don’t own tractors or bulldozers.” “There are Island Beach Access members down there on a daily basis already,” she added.

Families apply through the non-profit group and those chosen receive financial training, homeownership classes and are required to put in 500 sweat-equity hours into building their home. The Crouch family has
lived in the Freeland area for decades, but the past few years have been tough. They lost their home when the economy went south, and Bruce Crouch is disabled and recently underwent a bone marrow transplant, Liz Crouch said.
