The police department received a priceless gift, courtesy of East Pierce Fire and Rescue. Each patrol car has been equipped with automated external defibrillators, AEDs, with the intent that officers will utilize them in emergency cases of cardiac arrest. “Since patrol officers are out patrolling the neighborhoods, they often arrive on scene before we are,” East Pierce Battalion Chief Jeff Moore said. “The theory is to get the AED to the patient as quickly as possible. Equipping police officers with an AED saves minutes when minutes are critical.” Patients in cardiac arrest require a shock, or defibrillation, in order for the

Snelleman has also competed in shows with her two others dogs, T’ai and Stinger. T’ai has since died but Snelleman and Stinger are still competing at national events, she said. Due to an injury, Snelleman couldn’t practice with Pace the month prior to the competition. But the pair were able to practice before Pace’s injury. She said they focus on the physical side of the competition as well as mentally preparing for the event.

His squad lost nine of its final 11 before entering the Big West Conference tournament. But the Mustangs won the tourney title to earn the program’s first NCAA bid. With the victory over Texas Southern, Cal Poly squared off against Wichita State with a season record of 14-19.

Defending champions start season with two wins By Sarah wehmann Staff Writer

The defending 3A state champions are off to 2-1-0 start. The Panthers started the season beating rivals Sumner Spartans 3-1. Bonney Lake’s defense held the Spartans from scoring in the first period. The first score of the game came in the 39th minute on a shot from Brody Fitzsimmons off a sideline throw in from Tyler John. To tie the game, Sumner’s Jordan Butler scored off a free kick from the 50 yard line.

Three minutes later, Fitzsimmons answered with a score to take the lead, 2-1. John assisted the score. Jonah Phillips scored the final point of the game off an assist from Fitzsimmons at the 53 minute mark. The Panthers won its second game of the season against last year’s 4A finalist, the Union Titans. The first score of the game came from an unassisted goal by John in the 39th minute of play. The second score of the game was in the 67th minute by Jacob Bohl. He scored off a rebound from a missed shot by Phillips.

The third game of the season wasn’t as easy as the first two were for the Panthers. Bonney Lake played Camas Saturday and lost 3-0. The Papermakers scored early in the first half and had the 3-0 lead before the half. The second half was scoreless for both teams. With the loss, Bonney Lake’s 18 game winning streak came to an end. resident of 191st Avenue East reported the theft of a generator. There was no suspect information available but the victim said a subject approached two days prior and asked what street he was on, presum-

Two glass tables were smashed by concrete rocks at the senior center, during the night two days prior. There was no suspect information available.

Property Damage: An officer responded to the report of spray painted graffiti on the brick wall of a middle school. There was no suspect information available.

Pursuit: Two subjects responded to the police department to retrieve a lost phone. Records checks revealed the male subject possessed a warrant but he fled on foot as officers attempted to detain him. Upon pursuit and containment, he was found in a building under construction. He was arrested for the warrant, in addition to obstructing an officer, resisting arrest and criminal trespass. Mail Theft: Several locked mailboxes were reportedly broken into. The victims were advised to watch their credit reports for signs of identity theft. There was no suspect information available.

Answers, on top of old buttermilk I have found a new meaning to life – cheese making. After spending the past several weeks watching political Kabuki kooks find ways to be silly and not govern, I needed some relief. After a couple sleepless nights, my own personal, political Lorax popped out of a tree stump in my bedroom looking all grumpy and rumpled. “The secret to getting elected is finding friends to pound signs Dennis Box into the ground Editor … then comes governing,” he said. “All those weird rules about being open and transparent. Seriously, it makes my tummy hurt.” Then the Lorax repeated some line from the 60s – make cheese not words … or something like that. He was chewing Cocoa Puffs for his tummy ache and I couldn’t quite understand him. I rolled out of bed and checked out some cheese making websites. I discovered a whole world of cheese making. I remember my grandmother used to make cheese and butter. I can still see a white, cheesecloth bag hanging on the porch with whey dripping out from it. My grandmother always made the best tasting meals for me. One of my favorites was grandma’s wild black-

Just leave new technology to the experts A funny thing happened to me on my way to an oil change. I recently had the oil changed in my wife’s 2004 Toyota Tacoma at a local repair shop and was told by the mechanic that the fuel filter and spark plugs were badly in need of replacement. I knew enough to know that changing the fuel filter, once an easy job, was no longer simple, so I told the mechanic to go ahead and change it. It turned out he had to replace the filter going through the wheel well. So I made a good decision. When it came to the spark plugs, I figured it was a cinch for me to do it by myself. After all, I’d changed the plugs on my vehicles since I was in my 20s. I popped the hood to the truck and saw the spark plugs on the side of the four cylinders, where they had been on my previous 1978 Toyota pickup. There was a long metal bar that was screwed on over the top of them so I figured out how to remove it. What I found was that, instead of spark plugs, I had disconnected the fuel injection jets. When I tried to put everything back the way it was, I found I was unable to do so.

Not knowing what to do but realizing that I would probably only make matters worse if I continued, I swallowed my pride and called the repair shop, asking for advice and help. Since I live in town they came out and told me what I had done. The mechanic couldn’t re-screw the bolts because I had cross-threaded the bolt hole. I’d have to have the truck towed out of my garage and hauled to the repair shop. Fortunately, my insurance covered most of the towing costs. At the shop, the mechanic retapped the threads and then told me the spark plugs I had purchased at the local auto parts store were too “hot” for the coils that now go to each spark plug rather than the old

way I was familiar with, a distributor and wires. I was told that had I used the type of plugs I had purchased, I would have burned up the coils at $150 each (times four). The mechanic replaced the plugs with the right type for the truck and I was able to drive it home. The owner of the mechanic’s shop was being sympathetic when he told me, “We’ve all done it.” We all make mistakes that are costly and that I shouldn’t beat myself up too much. What lessons did I learn from my out-of-date, behind-the-technology attempts at being an at-home mechanic? Leave the new technology to the experts. A lot has changed since I replaced the spark plugs in my 20s and 30s. Times have changed and automobile technology is a lot more complex than it used to be. Kathleen, my wife, said I should stick to what I’m good at and let others do the repairs. Good advice. Rather than spending my time doing what I’m not good at, I should focus on doing and improving what I am strong in. That’s what I tell my high school completion students and maybe I should follow my own advice.

Let’s face it: something is seriously wrong with the U.S. economy. I’m speaking not of the remnants of the recession, but of the structure of our society; that is, the middle class

Troubling parasites can be prevented for indoor, outdoor pets Protect your animals by screening for internal parasites Welcome back to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. This month, we are highlighting the significance of protecting and screening your furry family member for internal parasites. We will be shedding some light on the importance of regular fecal screens and preventative parasite control for your pets. The information in this piece is provided to you in part by IDEXX Laboratories, one of the United States’ largest pet diagnostic companies. Human intestinal parasites in the United States have been virtually eradicated by improvements in sewage management, availability of clean drinking water, control of zoonotic parasites in food animals and the routine anthelmintic treatment of the human population. Dogs and cats have not yet been so fortunate.

Dr. Byron L. Blagburn of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, has conducted surveys showing the level of infection among shelter dogs is similar to what it was 10 years ago, when the national average was more than 10 percent infected with hookworms, roundworms or whipworms. An ongoing national survey has also found more than 25 percent of cats have roundworms and more than 10 percent have hookworms. Even when pets are well taken care of and live in nice neighborhoods, there may be other animals (strays, foxes, coyotes) infected with parasites defecating in their yards and parks. Normal behaviors like eating directly off the ground, drinking out of puddles, grooming, playing fetch and pouncing and biting items on the ground, predispose dogs and cats to parasitic infections all year long. Dogs and cats also acquire infections from infected prey like rabbits or mice or fleas that serve as

intermediate or paratenic hosts for different parasites. Year-round internal parasite prevention products do not guarantee that a pet will not have intestinal parasites. Recurring developmental stages of parasites, such as hookworms, periodically repopulate the intestine, grow to adulthood and shed eggs in feces. Eggs and cysts produced by parasites may not be susceptible to prevention or treatment by the products being administered. Lastly, owner compliance in administering preventatives may be lacking. In addition to having health implications for your furry family member, some of the parasite stages shed in dog and cat feces are zoonotic, so removing them to prevent environmental contamination, thereby protecting you and

your family, is important. Larva of hookworms cause nasty skin lesions. Larval stages of ascarids can migrate through the liver, lungs and eyes, causing organ damage and blindness, respectively. With an estimated 3 million to 6 million people infected each year, ascarid infection is one of the leading causes of unilateral blindness. A pet’s history and lifestyle gives some indication as to whether they are more or less likely to have certain parasites. Important factors include the age of a pet, recent adoption from a shelter, frequenting dog parks, administration of year-round preventives, hunting, presence of fleas, access to rodents or cockroaches and presence of other medical problems. Even predominantly indoor pets are likely to be exposed to parasites. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends that appropriate fecal examinations be performed on puppies and kittens at least two to four times during the first year of life and once or twice per year in adults. We can only hope that someday the task of fecal examination will become exceedingly boring because

Eating my way into my daughter’s future My daughter got accepted to DigiPen Institute of Technology’s fine art and digital animation program last Friday night. Being an “institute of technology” they do everything by email, so I guess getting an email on a Friday night shouldn’t have been a surprise. I was in the kitchen on the phone when she flew in, “I got an email from DigiPen with an acceptance decision. f ive years. She graduated from high school last year, but didn’t have enough artwork to submit to DigiPen. So she’s been going to Green River Community College this school year working on an Art Studio certificate designed to build a portfolio. I’ve been comfortable having her nearby, living at home, commuting back and forth to school. I put her future out of my mind while still urging her forward with the application process to DigiPen. The past six months I’ve seen her grow emotionally and even her artwork has greatly matured with college-level art classes. I feel her readiness to continue her education away from home; out from under the long arm of mom; to be dependent on herself and to make new friends with common interests. It’s not like she’s far; DigiPen is only an hour from home, but it’s far

enough for her to feel like she’s living on her own, starting a new phase in her life. I know all this, I encourage all this, I’m excited for her future. Then on Saturday the gravity of the situation came crashing down on my psyche. The reality of what my life will be like this fall descended on me like an avalanche: a table for three instead of four, having that feeling every night that all my ducks aren’t in a row with her empty bedroom mocking me, her calling for money, worrying that she’s getting proper nutrition, hoping she’ll call before she gets too stressed or overwhelmed, wondering if she’ll come home on weekends or even have time and if she comes home will she expect me to do her laundry?

I had a little mental breakdown on as real life came crashing into my world. I felt paralyzed to do anything but contemplate my future, which is what I had been avoiding while she’s been close to home attending Green River: campus living, money, empty bedroom, cooking for three. Now I’ll have two locales to worry about. So I did what any redblooded, American mom would do, I used food to calm myself: I started in on fattening popcorn, worked my way through a big helping of lasagna and moved on to sherbet

and chocolate sauce and mini-cinnamon rolls my husband brought home sensing my stress. My fears and stress eased up a little on Sunday, but I still had more uncertainties to quell. After a nice breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast with jam, I sidled up to another bowl of sherbet and chocolate sauce, mini-cinnamon rolls, descended on a bowl of Lucky Charms (my favorite cereal, by the way), and topped it off with Safeway Chinese food. Did eating all this really help calm me? No. But it was delicious. I’m not sure

if I’m out of the woods yet, though. Maybe I’ll bake a cake, go crazy and have a third cup of coffee.

The lands of Wilkeson were split into two by a railroad, but both sides are still the same town. Above the railroad tracks, toward the mines, belonged to NPR and was called uptown. Below the tracks was downtown, where most of the homes and

businesses were privately owned. In 1889 the territory of Washington finally became a state in the United States. Both sides of Wilkeson became established as a small town. Katelyn Huff is a student at White River High School and attends Carbanado Community Church. She lives in Carbanado and recently moved to the area from Chillicothe, Mo. Katelyn has moebius syndrome and is hard of hearing, but communicates effectively through American Sign Language. She enjoys working with children and wants to be a writer.

A bigger company named NPR took over after a while. They built a railroad and a post office. The Fletts and the Gales left and more new people came to stay and see how things developed. Builders built coal bunkers, a miners’ boarding house and more. A man named John Jones set up the first store. It was not just for Wilkeson. People all over the area came to buy supplies. As people began building houses, there was also a sawmill and a

When it comes to bragging rights, the Toyota Prius has long dominated the fuel-efficiency argument. However, the 2014 Ford C-Max is looking to change the debate by offering a hybrid with features that go beyond good mpg, namely style, comfort and a fun-to-drive attitude. Like the Prius the C-Max is a 5-door hatchback that can comfortably fit four people, or with its seats folded haul loads of cargo. Because it’s based on the Ford Focus the C-Max is more driver-friendly than the Prius, offering a better ride, a quieter cabin and a more polished interior. While the Prius may have been first to the party, the 2014 Ford C-Max looks to be the kind of gate-crasher that isn’t going to leave without a fight. YOU’LL LIKE THIS CAR IF... Fresh from its debut last year, the Ford Fusion continues to redefine the role of the midsize family sedan, including a plug-in hybrid electric model dubbed the Fusion Energi. Check all fluid levels in your car There isn’t much that a car owner can do to maintain his new car these days. Manufacturers build more reliable vehicles today, and dealers make certain that they’re always a step ahead with the maintenance of your vehicle. Owning a car today is no longer the hobby it used to be. So, if you’re a car owner what do you need to do to maintain your car? To begin, be sure to maintain the proper pressure in all four tires at all times (and don’t forget the spare tire, while you’re at it!). Then, you can wash and clean your car as much as you like - you won’t wear out the paint! But if you really want to stick your nose under the hood (and you’ll notice that your engine is hidden under a plastic cover!) to ensure that your engine is well maintained, then check the fluid levels regularly. Today’s cars have all the bells and whistles to let the driver know if a liquid is low or leaking. But a little preventive maintenance will not hurt. Begin with the windshield washer liquid. Although winter is behind us now, it is best to keep the windshield washer reservoir

filled with the proper liquid (you never know when you are going to drive over a muddy road or follow a truck that’s dripping with dark liquid and splashing your windshield). By the way, don’t fill up the reservoir with water. You may forget about it next fall and you’ll run into big trouble when the temperature freezes. Engine oil can be checked easily, as you never know when an engine will burn off oil.. Brake fluids are also easy to reach, but be sure to have the proper fluid to top it off (if oil is missing, you’d best visit your mechanic or your dealer... that’s usually the sign of a problem!). The power steering fluid is another problem spot to watch and so is the engine coolant. And if possible, you can always have a look at the transmission fluid although many recent cars no longer offer that possibility. If in doubt, consult your mechanic. Fluids can usually tell a lot!

Can you replace belts? Look carefully under the hood and you will find that there are probably many belts at the front of the engine. If it’s an older car, you may notice that there are up to three and even four belts to drive all the accessories, including the air conditioning. Many new cars will have only one belt. However, it may still need to be changed, so don’t expect it to get changed on its own! If you do your own car maintenance, you will want to inspect the belts, yourself. And the only way to do so, is visually. You will be looking for a cracked belt or an oil-soaked belt (in this case, it could mean more trouble emerging from elsewhere in the engine compartment). If the belt is glazed, chances are that it needs to be replaced, strictly because it is old and worn. However, if it’s cracked, it needs to be changed very quickly.

You can always change the belts yourself, especially if you own an older car with narrow drive belts. Indeed, it’s job is not only to get rid of the gases produced by the engine’s internal combustion, it must also clean them up almost completely in order to meet environmental standards. But, just as with any other car part, the exhaust system will have the unfortunate tendency to deteriorate with time, its worst enemies being heat and corrosion. In the case of heat, if you don’t drive long enough to heat up the metal and allow it to dry out completely, condensation will build up within the exhaust system, allowing rust - the system’s second worst enemy - to develop. Pickup trucks are now being asked to deliver ever-better fuel economy, and the 2014 Ram 1500 will be right around the top of the list. Among its fuel-saving features are an engine stop-start function, an available TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission, and active aerodynamics, with grille shutters and an air suspension that, among other things, can lower the vehicle to reduce aerodynamic drag. There are all the expected conﬁgurations of bodies and cargo beds, 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive, and three engine choices: the 3.6-liter 305-horsepower gasoline V6, the well-known 5.7-liter 395-horsepower Hemi gasoline V8, and the new 3.0-liter 240-horsepower turbocharged EcoDiesel V6, which will be the fuel-economy leader. The 2014 Ram 1500 offers something for just about any full-size truck buyer.

The smallest sedan in Dodge’s lineup, the 2014 Dodge Dart is a well-crafted 4-door that matches a contemporary appearance with good creature features and impressive overall handling. WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014 By far, the most important news for the Ram 1500 for 2014 is the addition of the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 engine. With 240 horsepower, it makes 420 lb-ft of torque (more than the 5.7-liter Hemi) and at only 2,000 rpm, so this combination will not shirk from hard work. And, it is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy while doing it. DRIVING IT Driving Impressions No full-size pickup drives more like a car than the 2014 Ram 1500. Instead of leaf springs for the rear suspension, the Ram 1500 has a multi-link layout with coil springs, with benefits in ride comfort and handling. Optionally available is an air-spring suspension and, while the ride quality difference between the two might be difficult to detect, the air suspension gives other advantages: Its load-leveling and variable ride-height enhances fuel economy, reduces load-in height, allows easier entry and exit, and provides increased ground clearance for severe off-road conditions. For most general applications the 3.6-liter V6 will be perfectly acceptable. However, for pulling larger trailers, there’s the choice of the robust Hemi V8 or the new EcoDiesel, which makes even more torque than the Hemi. The levels of wind and road noise, while very good for a pickup, are more than what would be expected from a mid-line sedan. ECODIESEL V6 ENGINE Favorite Features As fuel economy becomes increasingly important to truck buyers, Ram steps to the front with the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 engine, with 240 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque at only 2,000 rpm, and what will be extraordinary fuel efficiency. This engine is the forerunner of a new breed of pickup powerplant. AIR SUSPENSION A versatile full-size pickup needs a versatile suspension system, which is why the 2014 Ram 1500 offers electronically-controlled air suspension. With the push of a button, ride height can be lowered for ease- of-access to the cabin and cargo bed or raised for up to 10.7 inches of ground clearance.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014 Introduced in the late-arriving 2013 Dart GT, the 184-horsepower/2.4-liter “Tigershark” engine also becomes standard in the 2014 SXT and Limited models. Redesigned front bucket seats offer more comfort, and all but the base Dart SE boast additional standard features. Dart option packages also have been reshuffled to better reflect customer preferences. DRIVING IT Driving Impressions A rigid core structure and well-sorted Euroflavored suspension give the Dart a confident and well-controlled feel that reaches a clear zenith in the enthusiast-oriented GT model. Although boasting the most powerful base engine in its class, the Dart also is the heaviest player in the segment. That extra mass takes a toll on acceleration and passing performance regardless of engine or transmission choice, particularly in the SE when its 2.0-liter engine is backed by the 6-speed automatic transmission. While the 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo in the Dart Aero makes the same 160 horsepower, its 24 percent more torque at virtually half the revs make the Aero considerably livelier as well as less thirsty. Buyer requests for better performance led Dodge to fit the 184-horsepower/2.4-liter in the volumeleading SXT and Limited as well as the GT for 2014, but even that extra muscle can’t match the 200-plus horsepower available in the far-lighter Civic Si, Focus ST and Jetta GLI. MULTIAIR ENGINE TECHNOLOGY Favorite Features Developed by Fiat and fitted to both the 1.4-liter and 2.4-liter Dart engines, MultiAir technology individually controls the lift and timing of the engine’s intake valves to improve both performance and fuel economy. FLOATING-ISLAND DASH BEZEL A class-exclusive feature that’s standard on Dart Aero, Limited and GT models, this innovative interior element is ringed in Ruby Red LED light piping and contains the reconfigurable 7.0-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) instrument cluster display and 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen multimedia system.

The Charger deals with corners with a sophisticated fully-independent suspension: control arms in front and a multilink arrangement in the rear, with coil springs and assertive anti-roll bars all around. Steering is a precise and responsive rack-and-pinion setup. Brakes are 4-wheel discs, and the Performance Brake Package brings large vented rotors front and rear, and twin-piston calipers in the front. Even if you never use it, the Charger is engineered and built for some serious driving. GREAT ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE Favorite Features A selection of powerful and responsive engines, a sophisticated suspension, great steering, big and strong brakes, all well-blended into a very competent package. Four-door sedan or not, he 2014 Charger can get down the road and around the corners, and doesn’t cost much in the bargain. SUPER TRACK PAK This optional R/T package turns the Charger into a track-ready player, adding P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires, 20-inch wheels, high-performance monotube shock absorbers, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, performance brake linings, performance steering and 3-mode electronic stability control (ESC).

If you allow this imported weed to continue blooming it will shoot tiny seeds all over the landscape, hitting you in the face as you bend over and try to pull it up. Sheets of wet newspaper three to four pages thick can be layered over large patches of this persistent weed and then covered with a mulch of bark chips. Getting control of the weeds early means less work all summer long.

Fertilizing the lawn in spring helps the turf fill in bare spots where moss wants to grow. Be sure to sharpen the blade on your mower for a crisp, clean cut and fill in any dips and valleys with sandy loam so the lawn area is perfectly level. If you haven’t removed the old growth from clumps of ornamental grasses or if you have an overgrown spiraea, ninebark, buddleah or winter weary nandina you can cut these shrubs back to almost ground level for spring renewal. Don’t be pruning rhododendrons or azaleas in early spring or you’ll be cutting off all the flower buds. Pruning after blooming is the general rule of green thumb.

Sumner man wins big Bonney Lake freshman in Hit 5 lottery game pages for Senator A Sumner man recently won $100,000 playing Washington’s Lottery Hit 5 game. He claimed his prize at the Federal Way regional office on Monday, March 17 and told Lottery officials, “I always knew I would win!” The man discovered he had a winning ticket on Sunday after calling the Washington’s Lottery 1-800 number. “My daughter lives two doors down from me, so I

ran to her house to have her verify the numbers,” he said. A regular Washington’s Lottery player, he buys Lotto or Hit 5 tickets a few times a week and this is first big win. “I always play the same numbers, but this time I switched one number, and it resulted in me winning.” The full-time caregiver, who plans to continue working and purchase a new car, bought the winning ticket from Day & Night Grocery

Meghan Geiger, a freshman at Bonney Lake High School, took time away from her studies to spend the week of Mar. 10 to 14 participating in the Senate Page Program at the Washington State Legislature. Many goodpaying, middle-class jobs simply don’t exist anymore. There’s yet another situation I’d highlight. Corporate America pays few taxes, if any at all. In general, Boeing hasn’t paid any taxes for 10 years and, furthermore, owing to any army of lawyers who’ve manipulated the tax code, we’ve recent found out that the government

apparently owes Boeing millions of dollars! Similarly, wealthy individuals have access to lawyers and accountants who find loopholes in the tax laws and, consequently, a CEO who clears more than $20,000,000 a year often pays fewer taxes than a secretary. Of course, when you examine the top wealthiest families (the top 1 percent) you find many of them don’t work anyway. They can easily live off their inheritance. And just in case there isn’t enough inheritance to live in the style they’re accustomed to, they also marry into more money. Whereas the lower class and the struggling middle class often marry

for love, it’s different in the upper class. The “noblesse” feels the importance of love is greatly exaggerated. They point out that a lot of people know how to love, but very few people are rich. And you can learn to love anyone if the money is right. In this respect, the upper class tends to close in upon itself. I’ll conclude with yet another statistic that’s received considerable press in the last few months. A mere 85 people (family autocrats) have and control more wealth than half the world’s population (3.5 billion people). As they used to say, what’s wrong with this picture?
