Coupeville resident Kelly Beech joined the staff at Coupeville Town Hall last week. Beech is the new town clerk-treasurer, replacing Judy Thomas, who retired this month. Ten people applied for the position. Mayor Nancy Conard said Beech was chosen because Beech she has experience in public finance and is used to being in an environment where she has to know a lot of different things. It’s also a bonus she’s lived in Coupeville for 14 years, she said. While new to town hall, Beech is no stranger to the community. Having moved to the island 22 years ago, Beech has been a steady worker in the Coupeville School District for 10 years. She has held such positions as the secretary of the Cedar Program, which served as a home school support program; a transition specialist helping students coming back from juvenile detention; a technology teacher at the Cedar Program; and most recently a fiscal assistant. She said there was a time when she held all of those jobs at once. Beech said she applied for the town position because it was similar to what she was doing with the school district, but with higher responsibility. She said she’s always looking at moving forward. Her first day on the job was last Wednesday. “I can’t wait to get into it,” she said. “I’m looking forward to working more with people in the community and working with the mayor.” “She does such great things. I can’t wait to work with her.” Beech has two children, one grown and one an eighth-grader in the school district. Her husband is a former Island County Sheriff’s deputy who is currently assisting the City of Langley’s police force.

Stairwell project larger than thought By Megan Hansen Editor

Efforts to fix the public beach access near Coupeville Wharf will be more complex than Port of Coupeville officials expected. The stairwell leading to the beach was closed earlier this year due to safety concerns. “We were focused on the stairwell,” said port Executive Director Tim McDonald. “(But) it’s part of an integrated issue.” McDonald said he had two engineers comes out to look at the stairwell and give an engineering estimate. What they found was much more than an unsafe stairwell. The stairs in question are connected to the foundation of the port office building, McDonald said. In order to fix one part of the issue, all of the connecting pieces need to be addressed including, a ramp, foundation and bulkhead. “It’s very complex,” McDonald said. The port is dealing with a really old building in a challenging environment.

“It definitely was not designed to last 100 years.” There are also issues of erosion below the foundation of the building, which was built in 1887 using technology not adequate to today’s standards. Commissioner Marshal Bronson said, as recently as eight years ago, the port office building foundation was stumps. Last week, McDonald brought an estimate from one of the engineers for $17,500. Commissioner Mike Diamanti said the board sees the seriousness of the situation, but the port doesn’t have the capacity in the

Talbot K. Wegg Talbot K. Wegg, also known as TK, was born April 23, 1937, and died

March 5, 2014. TK retired from the U.S. Navy as a petty officer first class. He was a member of the Anacortes Rotary Club, the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Sail Executive Committee. He was strongly committed to his church, St. Augustine’s in the Woods. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Wegg Jull, his brothers Donald W. Wegg and Stephen Z. Wegg, his sisters Susan Wegg Busey and Elizabeth P. Jones, six nephews and two nieces. He is also survived by his fiancée Marianne D. Tuttle and her daughter Sara M. Tuttle. He was preceded

in death by his son, Sean Talbot Wegg, and his wife, Louise Deskey Wegg. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the St. Augustine’s in the Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland. Remembrances can be made to St. Augustine’s in the Woods. Goat farm to open doors for baby visits April 1 Yes, they are as cute as they look. Their cries, their little wagging tails, their bids for attention: it’s the whole package and Vicky Brown, owner of Little Brown Farm in Freeland, sums it up best. “They are ridiculously adorable,” Brown said. “My problem is every single one is my favorite.” Brown specializes in goat products and March marks the start of kidding season. The first batch arrived this past Friday and South Whidbey residents have been cooing over Facebook pictures ever since. “Oh....my....God. Cutest thing on the planet,” said one commenter. “I want them all” and “Cuteness overload,” said two others. Such sentiments were just a few of the awws and oohs expressed on the farm’s first Facebook post, which as of Monday afternoon had received 135 likes. Many also expressed excitement and anticipation over what they know comes next. Every year, once the new babies are a few weeks old, Brown opens her doors and allows the public to come bottle feed the infant Nubian goats. Hours are 3 p.m. daily, beginning April 1, at 1377 Barr Road. A dozen kids have been born so far, and Brown is expecting about 20 more. That’s usually enough for most crowds, but in a pinch priority is given to children.

“The adults have to wait and be grown-ups about it,” Brown said. “Which they don’t always do,” added Christine Maifeld, with a knowing smile. Maifeld, 24, is Brown’s daughter and helps her mom operate the certified dairy farm. With their herd of about 30 goats, the farm produces a variety of products, from cheese and yogurt to specialties such as Cajeta, a type of Mexican caramel sauce. Opening the farm to the public is extra work, but it’s worth it for several reasons. For starters, it’s an excellent marketing tool and great way of getting customers to her on-site store, which is hidden away a few miles south of Freeland off Wahl Road. Feeding the goats is free, but customers are encouraged to “bring their wallets,” Brown laughed. It’s also a means of educating the public about agriculture and where meat comes from. A few of the baby goats are kept or sold as pets, but the majority — nearly all of the males — are sent to a slaughterhouse for the farm’s grass-fed meat

New reporter eager to learn the community As the new staff reporter for The Whidbey Examiner, I’m excited to explore and learn about this new community. Though new to Whidbey Island, the Pacific Northwest has always been home. I grew up in Port Orchard, Wash., the county seat of Michelle Beahm Kitsap County. Guest editorial I had never visited Whidbey Island and was pleasantly surprised by community-centric Coupeville and the breathtaking sight of Deception Pass. I’m still learning my way around Oak Harbor and Coupeville, but I’m excited for the opportunity to become a part of the local community. Every time I envisioned my future career as a reporter, I always wanted to be a part of a newspaper that focused so much on the community. I wanted to be a part of a place that felt like home, no matter how new to the area you are. I look forward to reporting on local schools and the community, and I can’t wait to get to know the people who make Coupeville such a wonderful place. I’ve always loved writing, and when it came time to choose my major, I knew it had to be something related to that. Journalism appealed to me because I like knowing what is going on around me, and I’ve always thought it was important for everybody to have access to that kind of information. I went to school in Port Orchard up until my junior year in high school, when I started attending Olympic College as a part of the Running Start program. In 2010, I graduated from South Kitsap High School and from Olympic College with my associate’s degree. I left the state to attend school in Missoula, Mont., working toward my bachelor’s degree in journalism. Though the majority of my classes were in my major, I studied abroad in my second year of university, taking international relations classes at the University of Plymouth in Plymouth, England. During the summer of 2013, I interned with two Sound Publishing papers, the Central Kitsap Reporter and the Port Orchard Independent. Donations help bring survivors to reunion Editor, My name Is Cecil Calavan. I am a survivor of the USS Utah and president of the USS Utah Survivors Association. It is my job to keep alive the memory of those killed and still serving on board that wonderful old battleship, which was sunk by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941 in that horrendous attack on Pearl Harbor. Every year, the second week of May, we have a reunion in Las Vegas, Nev. We go to Las Vegas because the weather is usually always good, the hotel gives us great rates and there is a

lot to do. Considering that the youngest survivor — myself — will be 90 in April, the rest range from 93 to 96 and most must travel with a caregiver. As the years have depleted our ranks we find the expenses have increased and there are now too few of us to share the cost. I must ask for donations again this year to continue. Last year’s reunion was a great success, thanks to your donations. There were four USS Utah survivors, and four survivors from other ships, the United States Navy sent two officers to speak at our banquet and they were absolutely wonderful. The number of people at the banquet was at least 60-plus. We are expecting more this year. At this writ-

ing, there are five USS Utah survivors planning to attend and three from other ships — one each from the USS Pennsylvania, USS Nevada and USS Oklahoma. All of these wonderful ships were either sunk or badly damaged during the attack, with very high casualties. Considering how many survivors there are still living, eight at our reunion is remarkable. Coupeville grads continue careers at next level Former Wolves help collegiate teams in swimming, indoor track, basketball By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

Several Coupeville High School graduates recently completed successful winter seasons in collegiate athletics. Siblings Rachel and Cole Weinstein swim for Redlands University (Redlands, Calif.) and Whitman College (Walla Walla) respectively.

Rachel Weinstein, a junior, finished 16th in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.82) and 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.94) at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Feb. 20-23. She also swam on the 14th-place 200 medley relay team (1:54.92). During the regular season, she earned a first in the

100 breaststroke (1:11.87) against Cal Tech and a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.84) in a tri-meet Feb. 8. Cole Weinstein, just a freshman, placed his name among the best times in Whitman swimming history. This season he recorded the school’s second-best times ever in the 1,000 freestyle (9:52.4), 1,650 freestyle

CHS athletes receive letters, awards for winter season Coupeville High School athletes received varsity letters and awards for winter sports recently. Thirty-two Wolves picked up varsity letters, eight earned special awards and five were among those honored by the Cascade Conference. The boys basketball team, coached by Anthony Smith, finished the season with a 3-17 record and placed eighth in the Cascade Conference with a mark of 1-13. Ten Wolves received varsity letters, including seniors Anthony Bergeron, Gavin O’Keefe, Morgan Payne and Nick Streubel. Other lettermen were juniors Oscar Liquidano, Matt Shank, Aaron Trumbull, Joel Walstad and Caron Risner (manager) and sophomore Wiley Hesselgrave. Hesselgrave and Jared Helmstadter were selected for the Mr. Hustle Award. Bergeron and Streubel earned

all-conference, honorable mention honors; Streubel was honorable mention in 2013 as well. Coupeville went 10-13 in girls basketball, including a 5-9 league record, good for sixth place. Coach David King awarded 10 varsity letters, led by seniors Amanda Fabrizi and Breeanna Messner. Seven juniors lettered: Hailey Hammer, Kacie Kiel, Julia Myers, Madeline Strasburg, Wynter Thorne, Monica Vidoni and MaKayla Bailey. Sophomore Makana Stone rounded out the list of letter winners. Stone also earned first-team, all-Cascade Conference honors and received the Most Inspirational Award and Leader of the Pack Award. Messner was all-league honorable mention and team captain and recipient of the Wolf Pride Award and a four-year participation cer-

tificate. Fabrizi was honorable mention and team captain, was named Offensive Player of the Year and received a four-year participation certificate. Strasburg was a team captain; Kiel earned Defensive Player of the Year honors; and Myers was Most Improved.
