Loganberry Musselfest Festival gets ‘suspended’ By Megan Hansen Editor

The fate of one of Whidbey Island’s long-standing festivals is up in the air. Whidbey Island Area Fair’s move to the end of July now conflicts with Greenbank Farm’s annual Loganberry Festival. The date change prompted Greenbank Farm and Port of Coupeville officials to cancel this year’s festival. “We’ve suspended Loganberry because the world has changed around us,” said Greenbank Farm Executive Director Judy Feldman. Feldman “We’re simply responding to a change. This is a sad day for us.” The conflicts from the fair’s date change were various, Feldman said. It wasn’t one exact thing that caused the cancellation. A big factor was both events showcased 4-H groups; the members would have to choose between events. Other considerations were vendors, sponsors and volunteer time. “This will be a chance for us to find out how important the festival is to people,” Feldman said. “When a significant event moves, it has a ripple effect.” Before making the decision to suspend the event, Feldman said farm and port officials looked at every possibility, including moving the date, but could not find one that would work. “It was a carefully considered decision,” she said. Greenbank Farm is run by a management group, and the contract for that group is coming up next year. Feldman said while the festival is suspended this year, she’s not sure of its future because she doesn’t know if the same management group will still be operating the farm. “We can’t really make bold promises without knowing the future,” she said. It depends on who’s managing the farm next year, she added. Coupeville Chamber Director Lynda Eccles, who serves on Island County’s tourism board, said she was sad to hear the festival was cancelled this year. “It’s no easy decision to make,” she

Wind gusts and sporadic rain didn’t stop mussel enthusiasts from enjoying Penn Cove’s native mollusk last weekend. Despite the less-than-stellar weather, Coupeville’s annual Musselfest’s 1,500 chowder tasting tickets sold out on Saturday. Crowds roamed the town, going from business to business, tasting chowder entries and other seafood delights. Some restaurants set up booths outside their businesses to offer additional culinary options. Coupeville Booster Club set up shop in the Coupeville Recreation Hall parking lot, offering piping hot mussels. Bayleaf reported selling 800 orders of Musselfest mussels, prepared in front of the

It’s always been a popular event.” “It’s part of Central Whidbey tradition.” That said, Eccles said there are a lot of events throughout the summer and the people who come to the island will still visit Greenbank Farm. “It’s a huge draw,” she said. The Loganberry Festi-

val was started by Chateau Ste. Michelle prior to Port of Coupeville’s purchase of the farm in 1997. Greenbank Farm was established as a dairy farm in 1904 and the first loganberries were planted in 1943. At one time the farm was the largest loganberry farm in the United States. It’s not a major fundraiser, but provides an opportunity to gather the community together and celebrate the farm, Feldman said. The management group is working with tenants at the farm to discuss ideas for other ways to bring the community together and celebrate the farm. Several ideas are in discussion, but Feldman said the farm isn’t ready to release them.

downtown performing sea shanties. Music played in both the wine and beer garden in the Rec Hall parking lot and the beer tent. Chefs offered mussel cooking demonstrations throughout each day, offering samples of their dishes to the public. Visitors traveled from all over to attend the event. Each day at 3 p.m., crowds gathered in the Rec Hall for a mussel-eating contest. Competitors joined from as far as New Jersey. Saturday’s winner was from Bellingham. Sunday’s winner, Sara Sessions, is originally from Oak Harbor. Contest participants each received three 16-ounce cups of mussels, shells and all. The person to eat them the fastest took home a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant in Seattle.

Some art cars from Seattle parked along Front Street, adding additional visual attractions to the day. Families went from car to car examining the unique mobile artworks. “They added a fun little twist,” said event organizer Vickie Chambers. The group that organizes the art cars was so pleased with the event, they have four more cars already signed up to come back next year. Raffle proceeds go to Coupeville Boys and Girls Club and a Coupeville schools scholarship. Tasting tickets were collected both days, with participants voting on their favorite chowder. Coupeville Coffee and Bistro won first place. Kim’s Cafe, located at the end of the historic wharf, came in second. While many chowder participants went the traditional soup route, some businesses mixed things up this year. Another steps up Souper fundraising for Emerson seat By Janis Reid Staff Reporter

If he’s elected Island County commissioner, Camano Island resident Marc Hennemann said he would keep taxes down and make public safety a priority. Hennemann is the second Republican to announce his candidacy for Island County District No. 3 commissioner, a position currently held by Commissioner Kelly Emerson. Emerson said she is not seeking reelection. Karla Jacks, a Democrat and Camano Island resident, and Richard Hannold, a Republican and North Whidbey resident, previously announced plans to run. Hennemann said he met Richard Hannold. Hennemann said he believes he can offer a wider breadth of experience than his opponents. Hennemann served in various capacities in the Air Force for 21 years and earned a master’s of public administration from the University of Oklahoma. Hennemann said he plans on “raising and spending a good bit” of money to win. Hannold has said he plans to keep his campaign simple and take a grassroots approach, including going door to door. “I’m willing to spend the money on the campaign,” Hennemann said. “There’s no point in finishing an election with money in the bank.” Among his top priorities is ensuring the county has proper funding and resources for public safety. “I want to make sure that Sheriff Brown has the money he needs to do his job,” Hennemann said. In addition, he would like to see the county’s expendi-

ture process change from an incremental budget model, where departments are given extra money as needed each year, to a zero-based budget model, where departments must assume that no extra money will be available. “That has proven a good way to hold down expenses,” Hennemann said. “I want to hold down taxes. There may be a time when we need more taxes, but I don’t see it now. We need to get a lid on what people spend.” On the subject of controversial Outlying Field Coupeville and the aircraft noise, Hennemann said he would “side with OLF” and those who support the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Still, Hennemann said he would be willing to talk to those who would like to see the airfield closed. “Even though I live on Camano I would be elected island wide,” Hennemann said. “I’m certainly willing to meet with those who are opposed to it. I may not agree, but I will listen.” As Island County deals with the legalization of recreational marijuana, Hennemann said he’d prefer to see the growing and processing operations in industrial areas instead of rural areas. He said the rural areas may “present problems” and negatively affect neighboring properties. Emerson has drawn fire from constituents for poor attendance during weekly commissioners’ meetings. While saying he is not criticizing Emerson, Hennemann said he plans to purchase a boat and travel across the water from Camano to Whidbey to attend all meetings in person.

County seeks park grants County awards funds to South for Trillium and Glendale Whidbey for two new projects Island County parks is partnering with the Whidbey Camano Land Trust to submit grant applications through the state’s Recreation and Conservation Office to the Local Parks Grant Program. The partnership will apply for a grant for a parcel adjacent to Trillium Community Forest totaling approximately $370,000, which would be used for trail development and the construction of two parking lots. They are also requesting grants to purchase two properties at Glendale, which would provide beach access, parking and a public boat ramp. The Glendale grants total roughly $900,000 to be used for purchase, demolition and parking lot construction. ‘Us’ in USPS has stamp of approval Until I set foot upon the Rock, my interactions with the U.S. Postal Service were fitful and usually frustrating. Buying stamps or mailing a package was a detested ordeal of waiting in long lines of equally impatient, angry city dwellers with too much else to Harry Anderson do. At my Dallas post office, Rockin’ a Hard Place a postal employee behind the counter was particularly slow because her long, curled, pasted-on, rhinestone-encrusted fingernails had trouble hitting the calculator keys. But at least she was there. At my Los Angeles post office, the “Next Window Please” signs were often in front of every window. How refreshing, then, to encounter the post offices of Whidbey Island. I learned quickly they are much more than places that sell stamps. They are also essential hubs of culture, education and social interaction. This phenomenon is true in all Rock post offices – Langley, Freeland, Greenbank, Coupeville and even Oak Harbor, despite its troubling infection with America-like symptoms. Of course it’s wonderful to walk in, find no line, see a smiling postal employee who actually asks “how are you,” buy stamps or mail a package, and be gone in two minutes. I walk out thinking, did I just dream that? No! But there’s so much more to enjoy. It’s rare that I don’t bump into somebody I know at the post office, and that always provokes an interesting conversation. Did your roof leak in the rain? Are your fruit trees budding yet? Did you see that Red Apple just got in fresh artichokes? How’s (fill in the blank) whom you introduced to me at the farmer’s market last summer when they were visiting from (fill in the blank)? Where else but post office can you catch up on such important things? There is also that joyful anticipation you feel as you open your post office box. It’s so different from the impersonal, citified experience of having your mail slipped through a slot in your door or dropped in a box on your porch. Opening a post office box is a gratifying public acknowledgment that you’re still connected to a much wider world, as you proudly haul your bills and junk mail in plain view of others. Then there are the bulletin boards. When I lived in big cities, those boards were usually cluttered with “most wanted” posters and legal notices cautioning against money laundering and mail fraud. But not here on the Rock. America may be taken with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even email, which is so yesterday, but Rock dwellers still thrive in a paper flyer culture. You cannot really know what is going here unless you read the flyers at the post office. How else would you know that there is a storybook reading for kids at the library, or a Celtic flute concert at Camp Casey, or a septic-tank maintenance lesson at the Rec Hall, or a tango demonstration at Ciao? And where else would you find a dog sitter or a firewood supply or a bird-watching class in a hurry? At the post office, I can also donate my old cell phone (on the Rock I need far fewer minutes because I read the flyers) and my old spectacles (unavoidable clutter of the aging process.) On the Rock, the post office rocks. . . even if a stamp now costs 48 cents!

Loganberry Festival was highlight of year Editor, I am shocked and distressed at the cancellation of the Loganberry Festival at Greenbank Farms. This is my first year in Oak Harbor,

and the best event I attended was the wonderful Loganberry Festival with its homemade, homegrown foods from local venders, local equine competitions, local art and wonderful local country bands. It was the highlight of my first year here. I am appalled that it is being shoved out for the Whidbey Island

Area Fair, with traveling venders, kiddie rides and all the other stuff that is at every such event. Bad decision, bad choice! I sincerely hope you can rethink this. I’ve wanted all year to see the Greenbank Farm event again.

CHS ready for final season in Cascade Conference By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

Coupeville High School athletes say goodbye to the Cascade Conference this spring as they compete in the league for the final time. Next fall, the Wolves begin playing in the Olympic League. Here’s a look at the Coupeville teams as they prepare for their Cascade Conference finale.

Solid core leads softball team

The Coupeville softball team returns a solid nucleus of players, but how well the newcomers fill in the gaps will most likely determine the success of the season. The Wolves welcome back six multi-year letter winners: seniors Madeline Robert (shortstop/outfield), Haley Sherman (outfield) and Breeanna Messner (infield/catcher) and juniors Hailey Hammer (first base), Madeline Strasburg (outfield/catcher) and McKayla Bailey (pitcher/ outfield). Monica Vidoni (outfield), who suited up for varsity last spring, also returns and “has shown improvement,” cohead coach David King said. The hard-hitting Hammer was a first-team, all-league selection last spring. However, she is still recovering from a basketball injury and may not be full speed when the season starts. Strasburg earned secondteam honors in 2013, and Roberts and Bailey were honorable mention. “This group has speed, plays good defense and will be a threat on offense along with having good base-running instincts,” said David King. “Each one can play multiple positions and play them well.”

The six returnees are talented, but it takes nine to fill the diamond. Key newcomers sophomore Emily Coulter (infield), freshman Emily License (pitcher/catcher/outfield) and freshman Jae LaVine (second base), along with Vidoni, will most likely complete the lineup, King said. “The incoming players are inexperienced,” King said, adding they are “willing to listen and improve.” The expectations for the season, co-coach Amy King said, are to “come out fighting and see continual growth from start to finish.” The Kings have coached

this group through youth leagues and in other sports and sees the familiarity as an advantage. “They know us and what to expect,” Amy King said. “They know we teach fundamentals and will push them to grow and succeed.” The Kings expect the Cascade Conference to be strong this season and see the Wolves as a team that can compete. Coupeville starts the season at Port Townsend at 4:15 p.m. Monday, March 17. The next day they open the home and conference season with South Whidbey at 4 p.m.

Baseball team primed for title

The Coupeville High School baseball team was the surprise team of the Cascade Conference last spring. No one will be shocked by the Wolves’ success this season. After last-place finishes in 2011 and 2012, Coupeville was picked to finish in the basement again last year in a poll of league coaches. The Wolves placed third in the seven-team league and expect to compete for the top spot this time around. “Our expectations are pretty high, and, I think, legitimate,” coach Willie Smith said. The goal is to win the league pennant and reach the final four at state, he added. “I generally don’t publicly state goals as big as these because I’ve seen it come back and bite coaches/teams too often,” he added. “But, I really feel confident in what these kids, especially the seniors, can do this year. I don’t think I’ve had as determined, focused and deep pitching staff as I have this year and our team focus is really dialed in.” The Wolves return eight starters and its entire pitching staff from 2013. The group includes five seniors who are multi-year letter winners: Ben Etzell (infield/pitcher), Morgan Payne (infield), Wade Schaef (outfield/pitcher), Kurtis Smith (outfield) and Jake Tumblin (catcher). Etzell and Smith were first-team, all-Cascade Conference last year; Payne was a second-team choice; and Tumblin and junior Aaron Curtin honorable mention. Sophomore CJ Smith (infield/pitcher) is a key newcomer, coach Smith said. “(The players) understand what it takes to win in this league and what it is going to take to win at the next level,” coach Smith said. “Our pitching and defense is a huge strength for us.” The offense struggled at times last spring, so consistency is “a point of emphsis,” coach Smith said. Taking the league title won’t be easy; the Cascade Conference is loaded. Standing in the Wolves way is

Archbishop Murphy, which finished third and first in state the past two seasons. Sultan, Cedarcrest, South Whidbey, Granite Falls – everyone – is tough, according to Smith. The season will get off to an interesting start when Coupeville meets rival South Whidbey in a three-game series, beginning at 4 p.m. Monday, March 17, in Langley. Record holders return in track

Three talented female sprinters return to lead the Coupeville High School track team. The Wolves set school records in all three girls relays last spring (4x100, 48.01; 4x200, 1:47.27; and 4x400, 4:14.98). Gone through graduation are relay members Jai’Lysa Hoskins and Madison Tisa McPhee, but coach Randy King welcomes back junior Marisa Etzell and sophomores Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt. Hurlburt and Stone ran on the 4x200 team that placed fifth and Etzell and Stone on the 4x400 team that placed 11th at the state meet last year. Stone also earned firstteam, all-Cascade Conference honors in the 100 and 200 and set a school record in

the 200 (26.74). Other returning letter winners among the girls are senior Heni Barnes (throws) and junior Erin Rosenkranz (distance). Senior Nick Streubel, who finished fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put at the league meet in 2013, returns for the boys, along with lettermen senior Brandon Kelley (hurdles), a tri-district qualifier, and sophomores Matthew Hampton (distance) and Lathom Kelley (sprints). “Lathom’s speed has taken an explosive jump due to his hard work in the weight room,” King said. Jared Helmstadter also returns and is “going to be one of our fastest,” King said. They start the season at the Island Jamboree in Oak Harbor with South Whidbey and Lakewood at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20.

With a young team, this season should be one of “growth and experience” for the Coupeville High School soccer team, according to first-year coach Kyle Nelson. The Wolves return only six lettermen: seniors Brent Arnold (defender), Jared Dickson (defender) and Sean Donley (midfielder); junior Joel Walstad (goalkeeper); and sophomores Zane Bundy (forward) and Tanner Kircher (defender). Key newcomers, according to Nelson, are seniors Josiah Campbell (midfielder), Cameron Boyd (midfielder) and Jason Knoll (midfielder); junior Oscar Liquidano (midfielder); and sophomore Abraham Leyva Elenes (forward). “While the team does not have a lot of players with varsity experience, we do have quite a bit of soccer experience,” Nelson said. “We have a good balance between of-

fense and defense.” He added that the team needs to “take the opportunity to learn and improve.” “As we come together as a team we should see some success and continue to build off of those successes,” adding, “we will be looking to surprise some teams.” Coupeville hosts Lake Stevens and South Whidbey in a jamboree at Mickey Clark Field at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, then Friday Harbor visits at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.

The Coupeville High School tennis program, under the direction of Ken Stange, is a consistent winner, and this year plenty of talent returns to plug any holes left by graduation. Ten letter winners are back: senior Allie Hanigan; juniors Micky Levine, Ana Luvera, Ivy Luvera, Maureen Rice, Wynter Thorne and Julia Myers; and sophomores Jacki Ginnings, Samantha Martin and McKenzie Bailey. They will be joined by key newcomers senior Sydney Aparico and freshmen Valen Trujillo and Bree Daigneault, according to Stange.

Hanigan held down the No. 2 singles spot last spring and is the best shot to move into the No. 1 slot. Martin played in the district doubles tournament last year, and Ginnings, Levine and Bailey won some varsity doubles matches in 2013. Stange likes his team’s depth: “I’ve got bunches of returning players and my new kids seem to be eager to get out there and play.” He’s most concerned about the lack of varsity experience in the upper spots: “I’ve got lots of girls who have played varsity tennis, but none of them have played much at No. 1 singles or doubles. We’ll have to learn by beating up on ourselves and then see what we can do against the competition.” The season starts at 4 p.m. Monday, March 17, when Port Townsend visits Coupeville.

Fields lone Wolf in CHS golf

Coupeville High School junior Christine Fields will go it alone on the golf course this year. Fields’ brother Austin graduated last spring, leaving her as the only Wolf golfer. She will train with the South Whidbey High School team and follow the Falcons’ schedule. Fields may be void of teammates, but she is not void of talent. As a freshman she finished fourth in the district, seventh in the tri-district and eighth in the state 1A meet. Last season she placed fifth at district, sixth at tridistrict and 15th at state. Her goals this year, she said, are to make the allconference team for the third consecutive year and finish in the top 10 at state. In regard to being the only Coupeville golfer, Fields said, “I miss out on a team concept, such as playing in team-only events and the feeling of contributing to something bigger than myself.” However, being a one-person team, she said, allows her to “only focus on my game.” South Whidbey opens the
