Tacoma volunteers to transform parking lot into plant paradise
Civil Service Commission seeks applicants Pierce County is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the Civil Service Commission for Sheriff's Department employees. Commissioners are appointed by the County Executive and serve a six-year term. The commission is a quasi-judicial body responsible for rules and regulations governing examinations, appointments, appeals and other general personnel issues. Commissioners are required to attend one monthly meeting, or special meetings as required, and serve on a voluntary basis. Commission members must be a resident of Pierce County for a minimum of two years prior to appointment, registered to vote in Pierce County and a United States citizen. No more than two Commissioners may be from the same political party and no member after appointment may hold any salaried public office or engage in County employment other than his/her Commission duties. Treatment plant to end sales of individual bags of SoundGRO fertilizer Individual bags of SoundGRO fertilizer will no longer be sold directly from the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in University Place, effective Sat., March 15. Bags will continue to be available at a number of distributors across Pierce County. Large volumes -- orders of 1 ton or more -- will still be available at the plant. Large volume orders must be placed in advance by calling (253) 798-3099 and are available as supplies allow. Pierce County Public Works and Utilities makes SoundGRO from wastewater treatment byproducts known as biosolids. SoundGRO is an environmentallyfriendly fertilizer and is an important part of managing the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. plant seeds and harvest the food they've grown. Each workshop is designed to help gardeners through the gardening season by addressing what needs to be done in the garden that month. The classes are a combination of lectures, presentations and hands-on activities. "Each student's knowledge will grow along with their garden, as they see their plantings go from seed to table," said Stephanie Leisle, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities environmental educator. "Attendees are sure to leave the classes excited about planting a garden and harvesting their own food. This collaborative environment allows students to share their experiences and learn from each other." Classes are taught by educators from Pierce County Public Works and Utilities and Harvest Pierce County, a program of the Pierce Conservation District. The free monthly classes are held between March and November at four locations in Pierce County: Puyallup – First Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Washington State University Puyallup Extension, 2607 W Pioneer; Lakewood – Second Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall, 6000 Main St. SW; Orting – Third Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Washington Soldiers Home, 1301 Orting Kapowsin Highway E.; and Tacoma – Third Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Tagro Conference Center, 2201 Portland Ave.
Posted online Weds., March 12 The City of Tacoma is inviting residents to take part in a one-of-akind experience to rip out blacktop and plant trees and native plants at the intersection of Division and Sprague avenues. The work will beautify the intersection and filter polluted rainwater runoff to compliment the City rain garden being installed on Sprague Avenue. Depaving will take place on Sun., March 16 from noon to 3 p.m. and planting will occur one week later, on Sun., March 23, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and all tools, safety gear and refreshments will be provided. The event will take place rain or shine. To volunteer, gather under the shade tents along 6th Avenue next to Mt. Tahoma Seventh Day Adventist Church at noon. Volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. The depaving and planting is made possible through a partnership between Depave, River Network, Stewardship Partners, Russell Family Foundation, Pierce Conservation District, and City of Tacoma Environmental Services. "It's exciting," said Tacoma City Councilmember Ryan Mello, who will be attending the event. "It's innovative. We're inviting people to play a hands-on role in protecting waterways and Puget Sound. They'll probably have fun and learn too; about plants and trees that naturally do so much to protect us." Topics include: Starting From Seeds (March); Garden Soil 101 (April); Planting and Maintaining Your Summer Vegetable Garden (May); Garden Bugs, Plant Diseases and Non-Toxic Alternatives (June); Summer Harvesting and Planning and Planting Your Fall Garden (July); Composting Basics (September); and Putting the Garden to Bed For the Winter (October).
