Public servant retires after 30 years By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer
When traumatic events unfold, police and fire personnel are often the individuals who bring order to a situation. But as the sirens go silent and the lights fade away, victims
are left wondering what comes next. Enter the chaplain. Art Sphar has served community members and first responders of Bonney Lake and Sumner for 30 years. As a chaplain, Sphar provides spiritual and emotional support
when critical incidents occur, which nearly always involve a death, he said. Chaplains may act as on-site counselors, provide helpful resources, assist in handling police investigations, contact family members of the victim and make funeral arrangements when it is difficult for survivors to do so. The most important and rewarding part of his job, Sphar said, is the opportunity to remind others of God’s presence at a crisis scene and witness the dif-

But this year was different, the Panthers took home first place with a total score of 90.5 out of 105 possible points. This was the first time Bonney Lake has won first place in Ahina’s eight years as instructor. The winning team consisted of head chef and captain Emily Rash, Morgan Demich, Romica Watson, Jessica Luckey and alternate Conor Lees.

Christian said she doesn’t “think any year will be able to top the whirlwind of a year” this has been for her. Playing in the Super Bowl was different from most games the Seahawks had played all season long. The Hawks entered halftime leading 22-0. “It was nice being able to just enjoy the game
and not worry about it coming down to the last second,” she said. Christian said she was able to stand along the sideline, watching the clock and looking around at the fans. “As soon as the game ended, it was such a rush of emotions,” she said. Christian said it is impossible for her to describe her entire Super Bowl experience in one

And for Sumner High School graduate and SeaGal Christian her rookie season was “unforgettable.” Christian has been dancing since she was 3 years old and has been going to Seahawks games with her family since she was little. She said she would sit during the game and only watch when the SeaGals were performing. “I continuously told my mom that I wanted to do that someday and that feeling never went away,” she said. “Dance is my passion and I’ve always been a Seahawks fan. of them were still unemployed. Accord ing to Employment Security data, about 60 percent of those who remain unemployed had consistent employment in the year prior to their layoffs. Many previously worked in highly skilled jobs and have college degrees. Inslee said this new approach directs the funding where it is needed most. Employment Security will ask local workforce development councils to submit proposals by April 17 and the contract awards will be announced by April 24. There are 12 business-
led workforce development councils in the state. The councils operate 28 full-service WorkSource employment centers across Washington, as well as dozens of limitedservice sites in smaller communities and on college campuses. Altogether, WorkSource provided employment services to more than 239,000 job seekers and thousands of employers last year. Research consistently shows that people who use WorkSource job-search services tend to find work faster and earn more money than those who don’t use WorkSource.

Garden math: it’s time to multiply and divide Marianne Binetti answers questions from local gardeners The second week of March is time to divide and multiply late summer perennials. Dig up overgrown daylilies, asters, mums and coral bells now and use an ax or sharp shovel to divide large clumps into smaller sections. Toss out the inner, older core of these perennial plants and replant the new side shoots. Improve the soil with compost before replanting in the same area. You can also plant seeds of frost-tolerant perennials like calendulas, columbines, pansies and sweet alyssum directly into the ground this week. While you are out in the garden, work on those weeds. Pulling weeds now before they f lower will prevent millions of new weed seedlings this summer.

Congrats on letting it rot. Your trees, shrubs and flowers will appreciate your compost if you shovel it around their roots now. Try not to let the damp compost sit up next to the stems of shrubs like rhododendrons that are prone to stem rot but pile it right on top of hungry roses, daylilies, hosta and other emerging perennials. Be sure to read the next question about compost and weeds.

When I spread my homemade compost around my plants I get weeds sprouting up. I thought compost was supposed to keep down the weeds not add more. Am I

The garden gossip about home-grown compost is that in our climate it rarely heats up enough to kill every weed seed in the pile. The good news is that the compost in the center of the pile will be the most rotted and this is the best for adding to planting holes or working into vegetable beds. The compost on top that is still course with chunks of branches and leaves is the mulching compost to shovel around trees and shrubs and smother young weeds. Another tip is to accept that weeds will sprout and just make a point to hoe and rake out the new weeds a few weeks after you spread compost around your garden. If you purchase compost by the bag at a garden center or nursery you will not have the problem of sprouting weeds. A compromise is to layer your home made compost on top of your beds now to improve your
soil then top it off with bags of weed free compost from the garden center. A layer of wood chips or bark chips as a frosting on top of your compost will also smother any young weeds.

Olympia got hit with Boeing illness More than the usual exchange of cold and flu germs occurred among lawmakers this session. An outbreak of a rare virus indiscriminately infected Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate on Day One and showed no sign of abating before they adjourn this week. It is a strain of Boeing Fatigue Syndrome, a political disorder characterized by extreme exhaustion from repeated legislative genuflecting at the altar of the Jerry Cornfield aerospace giant. Columnist H i s tor ic a l ly it’s manifested itself among a handful of members of the Legislature unafraid of vocally criticizing a corporation which is vital to keeping Washington’s economy alive and healthy. This illness spread in recent months and symptoms are present in nearly every one of the 147 lawmakers. Many started experiencing fatigue soon after casting a vote in a November special session to extend tax breaks which could save the company an estimated $8.7 billion on future sales of the new 777X jetliner. When they arrived in Olympia in January, they believed their action inoculated them from further requests from the aerospace firm in 2014. So just the mention of Boeing caused lawmakers’ eyes to bulge, faces to redden and blurts of “Haven’t we done enough for them already?”

Pause your daily routine, take time to think Contemplate the future before the years slip away Stop! Have you reflected about what you are doing and thinking right now? Most of the time we act on automatic pilot. We have established set routines about what we do from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed. My morning routine is to hear the alarm and then turn it off, get up, pet the cat that is waiting for me outside the bedroom door, turn up the thermostat, then head for the shower. I continue with my routines for the rest of the day. Routines are good because they free us up from having to think about all the things that we do repeatedly. Days, months, and even years can pass with nary a break from our routines. Most of the time we are self-absorbed in our own activities and lives. Only rarely do we stop to ask ourselves: “What am I doing, and should I be doing something differently?” In running on autopilot we

often neglect to see major patterns that are taking us in wrong directions. Let’s pause and examine this all-too-human tendency. I saw this pattern with a set of parents of one of my graduating high schools students. My student was already 18, preparing to graduate and, all of a sudden, her parents began to put restrictions on her actions and behavior. They wanted to know who she was with and how she was spending her time. It was obvious to both my student and me that her parents had been on autopilot for years. Now that their daughter was going to graduate and move out of the house, they realized that they hadn’t spent much time guiding her. By putting restrictions in
her senior year, it was as if they could turn back the clock 10 years and control her actions. Of course, by then, it was too late. A second example is on the other end of the life cycle. As the “baby boomer” generation begins to retire in great numbers, many are finding they didn’t plan well enough for retirement and don’t have enough money set aside. I know with myself, I came to appreciate the defined benefit plan that had been set up by the state years before I retired from teaching high school. Had the state not been more farsighted then I was, I would not have been prepared to retire when I did. Because of sleep-walking through my career, I frequently tell my children who are now in or nearing their 30s to prepare for their own retirement because they probably won’t have the advantage of a defined benefit plan like I do. We mortals struggle to live in the tension between using our habits as tools to help us navigate our days, and pausing our routines occasionally to think about the bigger picture

opportunity.” Aside from practicing and performing on game days, there is more that goes into being a SeaGal. “A lot of people don’t realize what we do when we’re not dancing on the field,” she said. “I know I certainly didn’t going into it.” When Christian isn’t practicing with the team on Tuesdays and Thursdays, she spends her time practicing the routine she learned at the previous practice in order to perfect it. But apart from cheering the Seahawks on and practicing, the SeaGals take part in promotional events, she said.
The SeaGals work closely with Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, Christian said. “Those visit are always my favorite, to be able to put a smile on someone’s face,” she said. The SeaGals also do events where they can promote their calendar and a portion of the proceeds are donated to Seattle Children’s, she said. “We do a ton of events out in the community representing the Seahawks organization,” Christian said. “And I love to do as many as possible because that’s where we get to meet the best fans in the NFL!”

As Sphar widened his service berth, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chaplaincy (TPCC) was slowly forming. He gained membership to TPCC and the International Conference of Police Chaplains early on.
Tacoma-Pierce County Chaplaincy TPCC’s roots go back to 1971, when Lyle Smith, former Tacoma police chief and Pierce County sheriff, recognized a need and sought to fulfill it. Throughout the years, it has grown from serving the city of Tacoma, to including more than 30 local police and fire agencies. There are currently close to 40 chaplain members, many of which are volunteers. The service area includes an approximate population of 800,000 people and chaplains commit to responding immediately, on a 24-hour basis. There are a lot of unique considerations when working within a crime scene and other sensitive situations, Sphar said. In the early days of chaplaincy, there weren’t any guidelines regarding how to perform the duties properly. TPCC provides professional resources to standardize chaplaincy, including a nationally

recognized training academy. Many chaplains have traveled internationally to receive training and learn best practices from instructors at the academy. Sphar has served as both the director and an instructor. Upon his retirement at the end of the month, Sphar’s role is to be replaced by Chaplain Chris Bassett in Bonney Lake and Chaplain Bob Ihler in Sumner.

Sphar was called to chaplaincy while on a ride along with Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department in Gresham, Ore. He witnessed a fatal collision and wanted to assist the surviving victims, he said. He approached the Sheriff’s Department and began the difficult work of developing protocols from the ground up. In the fall of 1983, he made the move to Bonney Lake and helped found Lake Tapps Christian Church. He approached the Bonney Lake Police Department and was invited to be the city’s first chaplain. Shortly after, Sumner Police and Pierce County Sheriff each inquired if he would serve their departments as well.
The National ProStart Invitational is May 3-5 in Minnesota. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime for students and my dream for the past eight years to represent Washington at the national competition,” Ahina said. “Top culinary schools offer full ride scholarships to winning teams.” To prepare for these competitions, Ahina has the team practice like it’s the day of competition. The team “gets comfortable with the restrictions and pressure of what it is really like,” he said.

The edge the Panthers had over the 16 other teams was their unity and preparation which gave the Panthers a strong first impression, Ahina said. Another thing that set the Panthers apart from the other Washington teams at the invitational was the support they have. One key component, Ahina said, is the mentoring the team gets from executive chef Eric Hellner of the Metropolitan Grill.
“Chef Eric has spent countless hours with Bonney Lake High School culinary students both in the classroom and bringing students into the industry for real-time experiences,” Ahina said. The invitational was held March 2 at the Maribeau Park Hotel and Convention Center in Spokane. Ahina said the Panthers aren’t going to slow down. “We are continuing practices to refine our execution of our production plan in preparation for nationals,” he said.

Such butchery actually stimulates the production of fast-growing sprouts. 2 – Corkscrew willows can become very unsightly because of a common leaf blight that causes leaves and twigs to die. They are also very susceptible to ice and snow breakage. 3 – Many spruce varieties are susceptible to various insects and spider mites. These pests can discolor foliage, kill the tops or cause severe needle loss. Dwarf Alberta and Colorado blue spruce trees are particularly vulnerable. 4 – Alpine, sub-alpine and Fraser fir species should be avoided because the balsam woolly adelgid will eventually find and deform and or kill these trees. Infested trees have small twigs that are distorted into a bird’s claw appearance. 5 – Many Eucalyptus species are fast-growing trees that are very suscep-
tible to and can be killed by single-digit temperatures. If you already have any of these trees in your landscape, please do not run out and remove them. Just beware of the problems noted above. Some of the pests can be controlled with insect or disease sprays. However, if trees experience repeated attacks or have become real eyesores from storm damage, it may be time to replace them.
Specific mistakes to avoid • Do not plant Leyland cypress trees to be managed as a trimmed hedge. They should be spaced 10 feet or more apart to reduce crowding and so they can grow as large as possible and never require topping and yet provide screening. If topped, they will become maintenance nightmares because of their fast growth habit and formation of multiple tops. • Be careful when planting certain f lowering cherry cultivars as street trees or in landscapes. They often develop very
large surface roots and can damage sidewalks, patios and driveways within just a few years. • Avoid planting Lombardy poplars unless you have a very large lot and can plant them far away from structures. These trees become very tall and are susceptible to breakage during severe storms. Homeowners should imagine what a tree will look like in 20 to 30 years so someone will not be forced to cut down a tree that has outgrown its space. There are numerous attractive small trees on the market and more are being developed every year. Good luck with your spring planting. County offers composting classes Pierce County is offering classes to teach the basics of composting. Classes will be held at WSU Puyallup in the Victoria Room, 2607 West Pioneer.
Food Waste Composting The food waste class will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., May 10. Compost ing food scraps with red worms, or vermicomposting, produces rich organic compost for your garden and diverts waste from your trash can.

Panthers hope to pick up where they left off Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer
As the sun starts to shine again in the Pacific Northwest, the Bonney Lake Panthers baseball team prepares for its first game of the season on Saturday, March 15 against Emerald Ridge at home. The team has been “working their tails off and have truly picked up right where (they) left off last year from a practice perspective,” coach Mike Olson said. Olson has been coaching the Panthers since Bonney Lake High School opened starting with the 2006 season.
This will be his eighteenth year coaching, Olson started coaching when he was in college. Olson said he got into coaching because of his love for competition, athletics and working with talented young people. “C ombi ne t ho s e (things) and the path seemed pretty clear for me,” he said. Coaching baseball also seemed fitting because Olson played four years at Pacif ic Lutheran University as a pitcher. Olson said he enjoys coaching because of the growth he can see in the players both on and off the field. “A player from a few

The Bonney Lake Panthers start the season off with a rivalry game against the Sumner Spartans on Saturday, March 15. Coach Andrew Sage is returning for his sixth season. Sage has been coaching since 1995 but he hasn’t always coached softball.
He started as a football and baseball coach and in 1998 he started coaching softball at Issaquah High School. “I fell in love with it,” he said. When Sage started coaching the Panthers, he took over midway through a season when the head coach resigned. This will be his sixth year as a softball coach. And this will be his fifth full season as the Panthers
head coach. “Five years and five state tournaments,” Sage said. “I have a good feeling about this year.” As last season started, the Panthers were chosen to finish fifth in the conference but finished second one game behind the Enumclaw Hornets. Bonney Lake ended with a 20-8 record. Sage said five seniors

Casey Adcox has coached baseball since he finished playing at Central Washington University in 1998. He’s led the Sumner Spartans for seven years and served as head coach consecutively since 2010. The Spartan’s record was 18-8 last season and lost one starter. The team returns with a lot of experience but final assignments haven’t yet been made, Adcox said at the time of press. Key players to watch this year will include: Christian Parsons, who set a school record in 2013 with 118 strikeouts in 71 innings and earned first team all area player; Tysen Fischlin, who batted .449 and earned first team South Puget Sound League honors his junior year; and Chase Torgison, who batted .394 and earned first team all league honors. Spring hasn’t officially begun, but five of the team’s seniors have already signed letters of intent to play in the NWAACC next year and received scholarships to do so. brought a lot of success to Sumner baseball,” Adcox said. “As a coach, it’s very gratifying to see young men in your program, all with plans in place to continue playing in great programs after they leave. All of these schools have very rich traditions and reputations as top junior colleges in the region, so I really couldn’t be happier about it.” The boys will play Bethel High School at 4 p.m., March 19 at Bethel.

Megan Gaines is heading into her first year as head coach for the Sumner Spartan fastpitch team. The girls ended last season with a 7-12 record and made it to the early rounds of the state tournament, Gaines said. “Our expectation is to build off of last year and make it further in state,” she said. Paradise at Mount Rainier to extend hours for Park Superintendent Randy King advises that the park will be extending the evening weekend hours on the Longmire to Paradise road beginning Saturday, March 8. Those hours will be: •
