After having its 20-day permit at the Lake Sammamish State Park extended to March 1, Tent City 4 hopes to make Faith United Methodist Church the next temporary home. However, at the Feb. 11 community meeting hosted by the church, approximately 200 residents showed up to voice their frustrations and concerns about safety and jobs. The church, on IssaquahPine Lake Road in unincorporated King County, is surrounded by multiple schools, and community members said they feel as though the addition of Tent City 4 would bring the possibility of danger, harsh realities and economic issues. However, other community members spoke in support of the idea, referencing the positivity it brought to the Sammamish community. Tent City 4 left Mary Queen

Washington State Patrol Warns of Scam The Washington State Patrol is warning people about a phone scam occurring in the state where people are being asked to call in to a Florida area code number (813) and provide their Social Security Number. Victims are reporting these callers are passing themselves off as WSP and U.S. Justice Office personnel investigating an identity theft case and needing people to “call today” with their SSNs. WSP recommends calling a local state police office to confirm the caller is an employee. The local number is 425-401-7788.

a push when you were learning to ride a bike. Although designed to not go faster than 20 mph, you can go faster by pedaling harder. The whole idea, McGrath said, is to get at least 20 percent fewer cars on the road. Of course, it requires the infrastructure of the primary LIM. McGrath said it costs $50 million to build one mile of freeway compared to $1.5 million to build a mile of BoostRide pathway. By charging a $4 to $5 per day toll, round-trip, several virtual pathways have been designed already, which give a return on the investment in two to four years with 10,000 riders per day, 200 days a year. He bases the 200 days on weather, although, in inclement weather, he has designed covered pathways with radiant heat. McGrath said businesses in hilly territory like Talus and the Highlands in Issaquah, with 6 percent grades, would benefit from such a system, because then bike commuting wouldn’t be exclusive to only the ultra-fit riders. McGrath said the system has been tested, and it works. “The concept is proven,” he said. “Two
hundred million people in the U.S. have a driver’s license – taking 20 percent of congestion off the freeways is a lot.” And of course, it’s green. McGrath acknowledges electric cars are great, but they are still on the road, creating congestion. McGrath has virtual pathways designed between Puyallup to Renton (about 19 miles), Forest Grove to Hillsboro Ore.; Salt Lake City to Provo, Utah; and Denver to Aurora, Colo. Locally he has virtual pathway plans for one-half mile up Talus, and up Issaquah-Fall City Road heading toward Klahanie. Coming downhill, the rider will be on the other side of the road, and obviously won’t need a boost. McGrath said on flat surfaces the polarity could be reversed. He has presented the concept to Issaquah Mayor Fred Butler and U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert. The congressman had some suggestions as to how officers on patrol could benefit from Boost Ride. Radio Frequency ID is part of the design so commuters on a dedicated pathway can be queried on a bicycle’s license number which is attached to the secondary. If a bike is stolen, it would be spotted right away. McGrath’s first job is to sell the concept. From there, the world is his oyster.

State of the city report says Issaquah is ‘strong’ BY LINDA BALL ISSAQUAH REPORTER
Issaquah Mayor Fred Butler delivered his first “state of the city” report at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting, outlining four areas of interest. He said two months into the job, he is focused on maintaining momentum for a sustainable future with smart growth for Issaquah. His four points begin with providing exceptional customer service. He said Issaquah is an exceptionally safe city with community policing at its best. He gave high praise to both the Issaquah Police Department and to Eastside Fire and Rescue. Customer service also extends to the city’s online customer desk, which he gave high marks. Continuing to partner with community organizations such as the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Issaquah Association and individual businesses, was his second focal point. Salmon Days, Art Walks and wine tastings all bring visitors to Issaquah, he said. Issaquah School District’s upcoming capi-

Referring to the parks bond that passed last November, he said the open space grants will allow the city to acquire public land for preservation for all to enjoy. Lastly, he spoke of planning for the future. He said the Central Issaquah Plan and the development agreement with Rowley will guide the long-term future for the city’s future on the valley floor. He also mentioned the approvals of Bellevue College to build a campus in the Issaquah Highlands, and Swedish to extend its campus for more medical offices. “The state of the city is strong thanks to strong leadership and planning,” Butler said. After a lengthy discussion at the Issaquah City Council Land and Shore committee Feb. 11, the full council voted to extend the moratorium on recreational marijuana businesses in Issaquah, until July 7. The decision was made at
Tuesday night’s regular City Council meeting. The City Council agreed that there are too many balls in the air in Olympia, with at least four different bills related to medical and recreational marijuana still undecided. The council wants to wait to see what comes out of
Olympia, before deciding how to proceed. However, if the legislature decides to pass HB 2638, sponsored by Rep. Sharon Wylie, D, Vancouver and Rep. Gerry Pollet, D, Seattle, local jurisdictions would be obligated to follow state laws. The window for applications to grow, process or retail recreational marijuana is long closed. For the Seattle Humane Society for saving 6,937 animals and making 6,403 pet adoptions in 2013. Both set records for the Bellevue-based organization. The difference in the numbers were animals returned to their people. Other good news: the number of animals that had to be euthanized went down. For people celebrating the Seahawks Super Bowl victory in a responsible way. When the Seattle Pioneer Square pergola was damaged by the crowds, an online effort, called crowdfunding, began to raise money to make repairs. Many people contributed $12 (for the 12th man) and Western Washington Honda Dealers contributed the final $10,000 to make the repairs, estimated at $25,000.

Mullet ignoring voters’ voices
Why no questioning by the Reporter?
I am both disappointed and mystified (but not surprised) that the Reporter has not seen fit to question the actions or at least the ethics of both the city of Sammamish and the King County Police Officers Guild in the Klahanie Annexation campaign. For the Sammamish City Council to take only minimal actions toward Klahanie during the previous eight years, then in the midst of the final campaign for annexation to Issaquah to adopt a fast-track for any Klahanie annexation request and to request submittal of a bill to eliminate any sales tax credit for Issaquah if Klahanie were to annex smacks of underhanded double-dealing involvement in a neighboring jurisdiction (at best) and should not be condoned by you or your paper. Similarly, your lack of concern that the Police Officers Guild spent a large sum of money to influence an outside election that would likely subsequently benefit their organization shows a startling lack of comprehension or awareness on your part. Finally, I must acknowledge Dave Kappler’s arrogance and chutzpah, after his support of the above actions, to question the PDC filings of the pro-annexation organization.

Question of the week: “Have you been watching the winter Olympics?”
This past week, our state legislators voted on a bill to require a two-thirds vote of the Legislature in order to raise taxes. As voters, we’ve repeatedly supported this increased threshold. I was, therefore quite disappointed to see freshman Sen. Mark Mullet come out against the bill. Status quo prevailed and the measure did not garner enough votes to pass. While we elect politicians as individuals, and not necessarily on individual issues, I was surprised to learn that nearly 70 percent of 5th District voters supported the most recent statewide ballot initiative to require a two-thirds vote for new taxes. Upon analysis, it appeared that most Republicans supported the plan and most Democrats did not. Voters come to expect a more pragmatic approach to representing the diverse opinions in Issaquah. If Senator Mullet and his Democrat cronies had stopped voting along party lines, Washington voters could have the final say on tax increases. If Senator Mullet continues to ignore our voice, we’ll need to resort to changing those things we can vote on including who the next state senator will be.

Complaint filed over mailings for Klahanie annexation issue BY LINDA BALL

A former member of the Issaquah City Council has filed a complaint with the state Public Disclosure Commission over mailings made to support the annexation of the Klahanie PAA to Issaquah. David Kappler filed the complaint Feb. 12, questioning who paid for the production, printing and mailing of the information. The mailing was in the form of postcards sent out by a group known as the “Klahanie PAA annexation to the city of Issaquah committee.” The mailings were sent out Jan. 24, Jan. 30 and Feb. 5. The committee’s email and phone number are those of Mike Foss, who has been active with Dick L’Heureux in support of annexation. L’Heureux said they have every intention of reporting the committee’s expenditures and plan to do so this week. Foss, the committee’s treasurer, said the mailers cost $4,500 and that the money was donated by East Side Fire Fighters Local 2878. Union president Jon Wiseman said they supported the community group because it asked for support. The Klahanie PAA is part of Fire District 10 in unincorporated King County. District 10 commissioners were comfortable with the donation, Wiseman said. Foss said the invoice for the mailers, from Winpower Strategies, a campaign management company, came in the mail Jan. 30. The committee received the check from the Fire Fighters Union on Feb. 10, de-
posited it Feb. 11, and wrote the check to Winpower Strategies. The C-4 (expenditure report) is due monthly on the first of each month. Foss said they’ve followed every rule and regulation, and he’s tired of being accused of lying and false truths. “Our whole campaign has been a grade ‘A’ campaign,” he said. L’Heureux was surprised that “someone can get their shorts in a knot over this little money,” and called the whole thing a smokescreen. PDC records show the Klahanie PAA annexation to the city of Issaquah committee’s contributions are mostly from individuals, and none are over $100. On the other side, Klahanie Choice, the group against annexation, had one $10,000 contribution from the King County Police Officers Guild. L’Heureux said this is the second time down this road (annexation attempt), and that they will be talking to the city to keep the subject alive. “We’re not taking anything off the table,” he said. He said the committee will wait to see how it all shakes out when the election is certified Feb. 25, and how each precinct voted. There is always the possibility that the southern tip of the Klahanie Annexation Area, which includes Brookshire, where Foss and L’Heureux live, could be annexed to Issaquah by petition.

Trader Joe’s set to open in Sammamish today
Trader Joe’s, a neighborhood grocery store with foods and beverages from the exotic to the basic, is scheduled to open its Sammamish location at 8 a.m. today. The 11,000 square foot store is located at 490 228th St. (inside the Sammamish Highlands Center) with hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. To kick off the official opening, Trader Joe’s “Captain,” Store Manager John Olson, Regional Vice President Micheal Krause, and the crew will gather at 8 a.m. for a ceremonial lei cutting to welcome new customers – Trader Joe’s style. The celebration will continue throughout the day with live music, a balloon artist and food demonstrations. Inside the new store, customers will find Trader Joe’s décor that mixes cedar-covered walls, Hawaiian-inspired elements and some “local flare” including art that celebrates the neighborhood. Throughout the grocery store, there are several hand-painted murals that pay homage to the local landmarks with a Trader Joe’s twist, including Sammamish State Park, Beaver Lake Park, Pine Lake, the local high schools and more. “Captain” Olson comes to the new store from Kirkland and has been with the company for seven years. Trader Joe’s is a chain of neighborhood grocery stores that began in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. Since then, Trader Joe’s has expanded to 400 stores in 37 states.

Council President Paul Winterstein said there’s not a lot of precedent so the council is “re-doubling its effort to hear public input.” Winterstein said he’s been told the council didn’t allow for enough public input on the plastic bag ban. Council member Josh Schaer said he believed a ban should be saved for the worst of the worst and didn’t think science supported the policy to ban marijuana. However he did support the moratorium as did the rest of the council until issues shake out in Olympia. Recreational marijuana will be discussed in April before the planning policy commission, at a council workshop and another Land and Shore meeting in May.

Longtime teammates, lifelong friends on last run for Issaquah hoops BY JOSH SUMAN JSUMAN@BELLEVUEREPORTER.COM
When Issaquah basketball coach Jason Griffith watches his squad, he can’t help but get a little nostalgic. This year’s seniors were the first class the fourth-year leader of the Eagles has seen all the way through his program, and includes a group he described as equal parts talent and selflessness. But for the team’s core of upperclassmen, the memories go back even further. “I remember being new to the team,” senior Cory Nevin said of a fourth grade AAU squad he played on with current teammates Jake Henke, Brian Watson and Ty Gibson, among others. “I had just moved to the area, didn’t know anybody. All the guys were pretty cool and we became friends fast.” Those friendships have strengthened throughout the years for a group that also includes David Van Halm and Addison McIrvin, and are paying dividends on the court for a team one game from a KingCo tournament title. “We’ve been looking forward to this year for a while now,” said Gibson, who is a junior but played a year above his age throughout youth basketball. “We’ve been friends since elementary school, so it has definitely been fun.” The experience and cohesion of this year’s group has taken the Eagles to new heights, with a return trip to the

Perhaps the biggest key to all that success has been the lack of ego, something that has kept the scoring balanced and the game plan unpredictable for opponents. Only two players, Gibson (15.5) and freshman standout Trevon Ary-Turner (10.2), average double figures scoring. But three other players in Henke, Nevin and Watson are around nine points per game, and have kept defenses spread thin and unable to concentrate on shutting down a single threat. “They understand our goal is to be as efficient as possible on offense,” Griffith said of his team. “They see

The youngster on a squad dominated by juniors and seniors, Ary-Turner said the experience and leadership of his teammates has been constant. “All of the seniors and Ty are always talking to me, especially about defense,” he said. “They are constantly helping me out.” Issaquah enter’s its third game of the year against Garfield riding a seven game win streak, which includes the lone defeat on the year for the Bulldogs. Griffith and his players said they understand the challenges presented by a Bulldogs team that features a cadre of top-shelf talent, including transfer Tremaine Isabell, a 3A All-State selection last year. That accomplishment was not lost on players and coaches, but is also far from the conclusion for a team needing only one win in the round of 16 to reach the Tacoma Dome and 3A state tournament. “I want my team to play hard, play smart and do the things we coach them to do, Liley said. “When they do those things, they are pretty special.” The third-year head coach of the Crusaders said his message in the locker room was focused on those details, and a dedication to executing them. “We’re very critical, and sometimes being critical isn’t being nice,” Liley said. “But at the same time, we love our kids and our kids love what we’re trying to accomplish.” EC will face Bellevue, a 71-47 quarterfinal winner over Seattle Prep, Thursday at Bellevue College for the right to play for the district title.
