The city of Covington isn’t sure where the all money will come from to fund phase two of Covington Community Park, but officials don’t appear worried. “We are more comfortable this time around than we were with the first phase,” said Scott Thomas, the city’s Parks and Recreation director. “(The City Council is) very strongly and clearly in support of delivering this park because it’s what the community has been asking for.” The council accepted the parks and recreation commission’s recommendation to accept a more than $2 million grant for planning, design and construction of the second phase of the project at a meeting Feb. 14. The construction cost for the second phase is estimated at $3 million and, depending on the

A chance to shine. That’s what Allison Bureau saw for special needs students on the evening news in 2012 during a segment about an organization called Sparkle Effect. The nonprofit, which was started by a high school student in Iowa, is dedicated to facilitating and supporting inclusive cheerleading teams
— teams that have cheerleaders with special needs. Sparkle Effect facilitates training for team advisers and for peer cheerleaders and pays for the cost of the team uniform for the cheerleaders with special needs, who are also known as Sparkles. “It’s not really about cheerleading,” Bureau said. “I knew nothing about cheerleading.” After the newscast Bureau, whose elementary-age son has

Down Syndrome, started researching the group more and discovered that, at the time, only one high school in the state, Edmonds-Woodway, had a Sparkle Effect program. She started contacting high schools, pitching the program, and to date four other high schools have started teams, with several more lined up to start in the fall. Among the new teams are Sparkles for the Tahoma High Bears and the Kentwood Conquerors. “How do I make a difference in my son’s life as he goes through school?” Bureau said she asked of herself. From competitive wakeboarding to swimming to diving, Kentlake junior Evan Eidal just can’t get enough of the water. Eidal, who started diving his freshman year, topped the high school boys swim and dive season with his first ever trip to the state championship meet this weekend. Growing up on a lake meant the water was always a part of Eidal’s life. He first recalls getting on a wakeboard when he was about four years old. “It’s all just really fun to me,” Eidal said of the different water sports he participates in. At the district meet, Eidal came up just short of the 300 point qualifying barrier for the State meet, scoring 298.45. However, Eidal’s fifth place finish earned him an allocation to the championship meet. “The things that stand out the most are the intangibles — the character that he has for a young man,” Kentlake diving coach Joseph Brace wrote in an email. “He does what he says he is going to do when he says he is going to do it. Evan has a great work ethic, he shows up and performs without complaint and is always seeking to get better.” Eidal said he tried out for the high school swim team because his sister had been a swimmer. There were only three varsity diving spots that year and only two divers, so Eidal figured he’d give it a try. At that time, he split his work pretty evenly between diving and swimming, but over the past two years his focus has turned to diving. Diving may have captured his attention but head swim coach Jim Tanasse also pointed out his contributions as a sprint freestyler and in the 100 butterfly for the swimming side of the team. “Evan is a young man who never makes waves

It’s also a chance for general education students to learn about inclusion and acceptance. “We need to have disability awareness,” Bureau said. “It’s such a huge thing.” Bureau said that adults at schools are often hesitant
but demonstrates on the board and in the pool his real work ethic,” Tanasse said. In addition to wakeboarding for fun, this past year Eidal competed in the INT wakeboarding
when she first approaches them because they are concerned about how the Sparkles will be treated by their peers but, Bureau said, at the schools that have started a program the Sparkles have been treated with kindness by the students. “It’s amazing what you see in the schools,” Bureau said. “I’m a parent of a child with special needs and I wouldn’t be doing it if I thought they were going to get made fun of.” Bureau is the adviser for
the Sparkles at Tahoma High and when leaders at Sparkle Effect learned about Bureau and the work she was doing they asked her if she would be the Northwest Regional Director of Outreach. She accepted. “The best thing is going to watch them (the Sparkles) perform and talk to the parents or the cheerleaders,” Bureau said. league. In Washington state the competitive wakeboarding season runs from April to October. Eidal explained that wakeboarding competitions focus on completing tricks over a certain stretch of a lake. It was about three years ago that Eidal undertook learning more wakeboarding tricks. Eidal said he watched a Youtube video that inspired him. “After watching that I was like, ‘man, I’ve got to learn all that,’” Eidal said. “All the flips and spins and I saw that and I thought it was really cool.” His current favorite dive is a front 1.5 full twist. And, according to Brace, Eidal has also done well this year with his inward 1.5 somersault tuck and his inward dive pike. “It helps and it hurts,” Eidal said of the impact wakeboarding has on his diving. “(In) diving you are supposed to have your feet together and wakeboarding you don’t. That gets me.” To continue to improve his diving, Eidal joined a club diving team last year. “This year I have seen him grow in his confidence but also his consistency and form as a diver,” Brace wrote in an email. “Coming from wakeboarding there isn’t much esthetic form but there is a sense of good body control, so with that being said his form has improved much over this year. He has also added a good amount of difficulty to his list that has allowed him to be more competitive then he was last year.” The hard work has paid off for Eidal who is looking forward to State this weekend. He is expected to perform eight dives in the preliminary round, with an additional three if he makes it to finals. “I was excited,” Eidal said of when he found out he was going to the championship meet. “I set that goal to make it to State at the beginning of the season.”

Mark Hargrove that calls for improved timelines of foster child adoption recently passed the state House of Representatives by a vote of 91-5. According to a press release, House Bill 2582 would set in place a structure for foster children who have no chance of going back to their parents to be adopted into a stable home more quickly. It would require termination of parental rights paperwork in very specific situations to be filled out months earlier than in the current system. “Whenever we can reunite a child with his or her birth parents or relatives after being placed with a foster family, we should do so. But there are times when we know the child will be staying with a foster family permanently,� said Hargrove, R-Covington, in the release. “In these cases, and when a foster family wants to adopt, we must ensure that the state does not unnecessarily delay the process.�

The King County Sheriffs’ Office collaborates with the Maple Valley and Covington Police Departments to help increase the understanding between citizens and their police departments through education. It’s been pretty well established at this point that I’m a bit of a Disneyland geek. That fact about me just has a way of coming up, even when I don’t say anything. Perfect example: I proudly have my experience as a cast member tucked onto the bottom of my resume because I just can’t bear to leave it off. At one of my internships I didn’t say a word about it, I just talked about my journalism experience. Little did I know that I had walked into an office with several Disneyland fans and, before I knew it, I was being introduced as Katherine, the new intern who had worked at Disneyland. Of course, I love Disney so I loved having the chance to talk about it. This experience also proved to me that people do actually read all the way to the bottom of your resume. Disney conversations just have a way of springing up. At the same internship the woman I shared an office with commented on the music we were listening. She said it sounded a bit like the Tiki Room, so of course we ended up talking about Jose and Dole Whips and how the whole thing was originally supposed to be a dinner theater experience. It just happens. While in Los Angeles — and at Disneyland of course — in January I found myself talking to some folks next to me in line and, while I don’t remember exactly what I said, I know it wasn’t anything especially knowledgable or noteworthy, and the woman I was talking to said, “do you work here?” I just smiled and told her that no, I

did not, and left it at that. Once a Skip, always a Skip, they say. Back when I was a cast member, I worked in Adventureland — that means I worked Jungle Cruise, Tiki Room and Indiana Jones. I also spend a fair amount of time on the parade route directing traffic, and I worked exactly one Fantasmic crowd control shift. Crowd control essentially equals lots of walking around, talking to guests and waving a flashlight with a lot of directional spieling. Things like, “please stay to your righthand side all the way through the walkway, folks, stay to your right hand side please.” My favorite thing about these kinds of shifts was all that walking. Getting paid to stroll around Main Street on a
beautiful SoCal summer afternoon and talk to guests about the resort, answering their questions? Don’t mind if I do. One afternoon during the parade, while I was directing traffic near the Main Street Cinema, I looked over at the float parked across from me and, low and behold, Mickey had his pants on backwards. One of my best friends and I really met and started becoming friends because of Disney. She went to Biola, too, and we lived across the hall from each other our sophomore year. She had Disney stuff on her door. The rest is pretty much history. I have to say that is one of the best parts about
about Buffett, and plutocrats as a group. BNSF is a near monopoly, controlling 49 percent of rail traffic in the West. For farmers who need to ship their products to the cities, it’s the cheapest and virtually only means they have to do so. Truck hauling is far too expensive compared to trains. Farmers are considered “captive shippers.” Forty-four percent of rail freight in 2012 was coal. According to Johnston, the best and most sulfur-free coal comes from Wyoming. The federal government limits coal production to cut down on air pollution, so most of the U.S. coal comes from Wyoming. Therefore the price is higher. This was a factor in Buffett’s purchase of BNSF. Just before Buffet bought BNSF, the Surface Transportation Board, which regulates the industry, made an announcement that BNSF’s rates were too low – meaning that they could be raised. The STB tends to have more empathy for the railroads than it has for rail customers. That is the current attitude of both state and the federal regulatory agencies toward large corporations, according to Johnston. Buffett, in buying the BNSF, now had two positive ways to make a profit: the opportunity to raise rail rates and a near monopoly on shipping coal. Buffett is known to prefer “market monopolies.” Competition, as Buffet says, “tends to eat up any excess profits.” This is the antithesis of capitalism, which is supposed to thrive on competition. Buffet also owns an electric utility in Or-
egon, PacifiCorp, which uses coal to generate electricity. So not only does he control a railroad virtual monopoly, he also owns another government-regulated monopoly, a power utility. According to Oregon law, utilities were given the right in 2011 to pocket state taxes, something that Buffett’s lobbyists were able to lobby into law through the Oregon legislature. So, Oregon taxpayers unknowingly pay a state tax that goes directly into the pockets of PacifiCorp. Buffet raised railroad rates, which in turn raised utility rates in Oregon. This meant he benefited from rising prices from both companies, and the consumers were held captive to those rising costs. Railroad executives used to complain about employee “featherbedding” by unions who did not allow railroads to lay off excess workers. “Now we have, by government policy, what might be called ‘capital featherbedding’. But you won’t hear the railroad executives gripe about that,” Johnston writes. Part of the problem with the nation today is that plutocrats have been able to control government through lobbying of Congress and by financing political campaigns, thus buying influence. This, in turn, increases profits for the super wealthy and creates monopolies. The consumer experiences rising prices and reduced buying power while the superrich like Buffett and other plutocrats get even richer. Buffett’s giving away of part of his wealth to noble causes conceals the money-grubbing plutocrat he really is. We are truly living in a second Gilded Age – bright and shiny gold on the outside, but of low quality on the inside

Shiny outside, but poor inside The definition of a plutocrat is “a person who derives power from wealth.” Warren Buffet fits in that category. Buffet said in 2011 about the U.S. government: “We are still a democracy, but we have moved in my lifetime towards a plutocracy. We do not have a plutocracy, I want to emphasize that, but the distribution of wealth and the influence of wealth have moved in that direction.” These are troubling words from Buffett, but he should know. Ironically, though, he, like other plutocrats in their own areas, has gained greatly from government help in order to create monopolies. In 2009, his company, Berkshire Hathaway, purchased 77 percent of the shares of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for $44 billion, according to David Cay Johnston in his best seller “The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use Plain English to Rob You Blind.” (You can see BNSF railcars in Auburn.) Had you purchased $1 worth of stocks in BNSF just after Buffett bought the lion’s share, the value would have grown to $3.75 by 2012, much better than the stock market a year after the 2008 economic crash. By understanding how he did it, we can consider what it says

Sometimes it’s guests — there was a woman who used to come and ride Indy over and over again every morning. She carried a little notebook with her and would make a tally in it after every ride. There was also a guy who would come a lot dressed as Indiana. Or it might be the small trivia things — where the hidden Mickeys are, showing the Eeyore parking lot sign in Indy to guests, the half red, half white light bulb at Coke Corner, etc. Sharing the magic. And sometimes it’s the harmless oops moments, like Mickey having his pants on backwards. I only worked Tiki Room twice, and that was OK with me. I understand the historical significance of the attraction and all the animatronics but it just isn’t my favorite. Jungle and Indy were what I really loved. The spiel-

It’s funny how jokes go in an out of fashion in the Jungle, and yet some are enduring classics that never go away — backside of water anyone? Here in the Jungle we call that 02H. At Jungle downtimes, when the attraction is closed for some reason or another, are pretty rare but when they do happen there’s a lot of driving the boats back and forth through the Jungle, shifting around a stuck boat to let guests off and then hanging out in your boat until things get going again. It’s impressive how the Jungle truly is a jungle these days. Almost 60 years of trying to grow a jungle will have that effect. At first I was skeptical about Indy but I quickly fell in love with working it. The Indy costume is just cute — because of course that is what really matters — and the whole thing operates at a much faster speed than Jungle. One afternoon I was at the loading station and I was looking out across the jeep and a guy in row three caught my attention.
I couldn’t figure out where I knew him from. Several jeeps later it hit me. He played a minor character in Gilmore Girls, a show I’m a big fan of. And that’s another thing, you just never know who you might bump into. Might be an A lister, might be someone you went to high school with who has no idea you live in California, let alone work at Disneyland. On another note, Disneyland is both deceptively big and deceptively small. When you walk around backstage you realize how close all the show buildings for the rides are. Several lands away is really just a hop, skip and a jump. On the other hand, Indy is massive. When walking the track during training I realized just how tall that ride really goes and how many hills there are. Case in point: Snake Temple is on the third floor. The stories and memories from that place are virtually endless. Every time I go it seems like there is something new I notice, or something new to experience. Which is good, I need new material every now and then. After all, it just has a way of coming up.

Gould, based in Seattle, to sue Bruce Disend, the former Maple Valley city attorney, and the firm Kenyon Disend for malpractice. The documents state that the suit was based on an ordinance the City Council passed in 2003 and a resolution in 2005 concerning a special assessment district for the Four Corners commercial corridor. The city’s suit alleged the special assessment district code violated state law. Kenyon Disend stated in its response that the city’s decision concerning the special assessment district was “legally flawed.â€? The case was dismissed by the Superior Court due to the statute of limitations.

When his new appointee, Christy Todd, was confirmed Jan. 9, the firm acting as city attorney of four years, Kenyon Disend, promptly quit. Kenyon Disend’s contract expired at the end of 2013 but the firm continued in the role and submitted a request for proposal to continue its services, according to Mike Kenyon, founding partner of the firm. Gordon said at a council meeting that the firm quit following Todd’s hiring because of an “irreconcilable conflict� between the parties. Stephen Dejulio has been hired as the interim city attorney. Stretch to improve flexibility and avoid injury BY STACI LYONS Pinnacle Medical Wellness
A
n often overlooked piece in physical wellness is flexibility. The human body is made up of interconnected chains of various muscle groups. As we grow older these muscles become less pliable and begin to pull on one another. Some of our larger muscle groups
can begin to pull on the entire chain in a way that eventually leads to chronic pain or injury. A leading cause of lower back pain, for example, is tightness in your hamstrings, which are the muscles along the back of your thighs. When a person has tight hamstrings, they must compensate by bending from their back when leaning forward instead of using the full motion of their
hips. This movement fault creates increased torque on the small back muscles and increases the risk of strain while bending or lifting. There are several styles of stretching that can improve muscle flexibility. The most common is a static stretch. This type of stretching involves taking a muscle to the end of its comfortable length and holding for 3060 seconds. Caution should be used to avoid stretching
too hard as this can actually damage the muscle or create a reflex tightening of the tissue. The second style of stretching, which is becoming more popular among active individuals, is known as “dynamic” stretching. This activity involves repetitively stretching and activating the muscles through movement. This option utilizes the functional movement of the joint and the heat generated
by movement to optimally stretch the tissue. Some creative ways to start your stretching program include stretching in the shower while your temperature is warm or putting

During a strategic planning retreat last month, city officials decided that some unallocated reserves would be spread equally among parks, transportation and the Town Center project, according to City Manager Derek Matheson. Matheson hopes the portion for the parks could go toward this project if the Wildlife and Recreation grant falls through. “I think there is the political will to do this,” Matheson said. “The Covington Community Park is really important to the City Council, parks and recreation commission and our community.” The nearly 30-acre park is located at the southwest to prepare for specifications. As it gets closer to a shovel-ready project, he will be looking for additional funding. “We are not fully funded but this will improve our chances to find additional funds for the project,” he said. “It’s hard to project when we might get funding. It may be several years, and maybe longer.”

Former Kent School District Superintendent George T. Daniel passed away Jan. 30 of lung cancer. He was 83. “This district will continue to serve generations of students, as Dr. Daniel did,” said current Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas. “His foresight was instrumental to our success at serving students today, and his impact on our organization is lasting.” Daniel was Kent School District’s superintendent for 21 years and retired in 1992. He oversaw the district during a time of rapid growth in employment, housing, and student enrollment. Under his leadership, the district purchased land in areas where growth was predicted while land was yet undervalued. With sound financial management and Daniel’s leadership, the district increased the number of new schools by 20 to accommodate growth in the student

In 1990, he received an Excellence in Education Award, the only superintendent among 51 school administrators and teachers selected. During Daniel’s tenure, he saw the value in diversity and launched an aggressive effort to recruit minority employees and to train non-minority employees to work with the increasingly diverse student body. Today, Kent School District is the most ethnically diverse district in the state. Former colleagues remember that, while the size of the district was increasing rapidly, Daniel maintained the feeling of a small district with retiree barbecues, school visits, leadership retreats, and a warm personality. George T. Daniel Elementary School was named in Daniel’s honor the year of his retirement. The name was suggested by students, a choice competing in popularity with suggestions of naming the new school after Seattle Seahawks receiver Steve Largent. These are lessons that we as coaches can’t always teach, and that’s when we

season this winter. So far the team has two Sparkles, who are paired with peer cheerleaders — students who volunteered to work with the Sparkles and help them learn routines. The Sparkles practice once a week and cheer during the first two quarters of the games and during the halftime performance. The growth that takes place in the Sparkles is amazing, Bureau said. “They go from being shy,
to being happier, more energized,” Bureau said. “Parents of Sparkles say it changed their kids’ lives.” Kentwood also started a Sparkle team this year. Kim Kawachi is the director and head coach of the cheer program as well as the adviser for the Sparkles. Ben Canty, a Kentwood assistant cheer coach, also helped run the Sparkle program. The Kentwood program is open to students from across the district and this year six Sparkles join the team.

Tahoma wrestlers dominated the district tournament field on Feb. 16, crowning four champions and sending 10 to this weekend’s state tournament. Nick Whitehead (113 pounds), Cruz Velasquez (126 pounds), Justin Weiding (145 pounds) and Tucker Mjelde (160 pounds) all finished at the top of their respective fields at the 4A region 3 tournament. The Bears finished second in state as a team in 2013 and first in 2012. Head coach Chris Feist said his group will be battling with five other teams that advanced between 10-12 wrestlers to the tournament. “I think we are right there,” Feist said. “We need to go in on Friday night and have a good first round and build off that momentum.” To win the team title, Feist said his group needs between two and four wrestlers going through the “front door” to the finals and four to six earning metals through the “backdoor” consolation bracket. That means preparation, focus and a few “giant killers.”
“Any time you go into a bracketed tournament, someone amongst us has got to be a giant killer,” Feist said. “We feel confident that we have a couple guys in our lineup that are skilled enough and mentally strong enough to do that.” Both Kentlake and Kentwood will also be sending grapplers to the Mat Classic. Kentlake’s Josh Beckler and Jon Yarbrough both earned third place, at 152 and 220 pounds, respectively, and 113-pounder Nick Smith took fourth place. Kentwood sends Dalton Meyers, who took second at 145 pounds, and Kyle Capperauld, who finished fourth at 220 pounds. Shannon Parmley, from Kentwood, will be wrestling at 112 pounds in the girls division against Danielle Crawford from Granite Falls.
BASKETBALL BLUES The Kentwood girls basketball team lost in the closing seconds of its second round match up in district tournament play, in an overall disappointing week for area schools.
The Kentwood girls fell to Belleramine Prep by a score of 49-45 at Rogers High on Saturday, after dominating Curtis, 64-33, in the first round. After escaping its first round contest against Central Kitsap, 40-39, the Tahoma girls also fell in the second round, losing 61-37 to Mount Rainier High. Both squads were scheduled to play a loser out game on Tuesday, after press time. The Bears and Conquerors’ boys teams were both eliminated from the tournament after a pair of opening losses. The Tahoma boys lost to Curtis 53-58 in the first round on Feb. 13 and to Emerald Ridge, 65-47, on Feb. 15. The Conks lost 59-48 to Bellarmine Prep in the first round and 62-56 to Auburn on Tuesday.
GYMNASTS MOVE ON The Kentlake gymnastics team took fifth at the 4A district meet led by a third place all around performance by Ashley Pernell. The team will move to the state meet beginning Friday at the Tacoma Dome and wrapping up Saturday. Pernell scored 36.075 all around; 9.350 for a second place on the vault; third on

What is eating them? T.Y., Puyallup A. My best guess is that those primrose thieves are slimy slugs. Look for traces of slime and scalloped bite marks on the leaves and any flower petals. Primroses with bright colors and large blooms are the common polyantha varieties that slugs love. The more expensive English type primroses have smaller but more slug-resistant blooms and foliage. You find these hardier English primroses at nurseries rather than grocery stores. A pet-safe slug bait like Worry Free will protect not just primroses but any plant with tender spring growth. Individuals who may be experiencing sleep apnea may have the following symptoms, according to The Mayo Clinic: • excessive daytime sleepiness • loud snoring • awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat • headaches in the morning • problems paying attention • difficulty staying asleep Others may notice a spouse or family member has sleep apnea by recognizing abrupt awakenings from shortness of breath or intermittent pauses in his or her breathing during sleep. RISK FACTORS Many people experience sleep apnea, though it may be more pronounced in certain groups of people. Those who are overweight may have obstructions to breathing. People with a thick neck also may have a narrower airway. Genetics also may play a role in a narrow airway in the throat or enlarged adenoids or tonsils that contribute to airway obstruction. Men are twice as likely to have sleep apnea as women, and men who are older than age 60 have an increased risk over younger men. Smokers are three times more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea over people who have never smoked. That’s because, according to the Mayo Clinic, inflammation and mucus retention may occur in the upper airway. People who naturally have difficulty breathing through the nose may be at a higher risk for sleep apnea.
