Voters approve school levy Sarah Wehmann

East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to the report of a house fire at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the Mountain View Drive home was filled with smoke and a woman was trapped inside on the second floor. She was rescued and treated for smoke inhalation before being released at the scene. Responding crews included four fire engines, a ladder truck and two medic units. One crew located and extinguished the fire while a second crew rescued the woman from a

provide excellent instruction, every day, in every classroom, for every student for the upcoming 2015-18 school years.” The levies presented to the voters were Proposition No. 1: Replacement Educational Programs, Maintenance and Operations Levy and Proposition 2: Instructional Technology Capital Levy.

Proposition 1 is a proposed levy that would replace the Sumner School District’s current levy that was approved in 2010 that is expiring at the end of 2014. It is a four year levy that pays for items not funded or not fully funded by the state, according to a Sumner School District press release. Some of those items include additional staff for instruction, supervision and safety; teacher training and development and

building maintenance, materials and supplies along with others. Proposition No. 1 is not a new tax, this levy will only replace an expiring one. The second levy on this ballot, Proposition No. 2, is a four year levy that would pay for improvements to classroom technology. This levy would be a new tax for residents. Sumner girls take second seed in districts Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

The Sumner Spartans girls basketball hosted the White River Hornets in the final game of the subdistricts tournament on Friday, Feb. 14. And for only the second time all season, the Spartans lost. The Hornets won a close game 56-54. Sumner trailed for most of the game. The Spartans made a run at the end of the first half to bring them within three, 29-26. With 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, Sumner took the lead of White River 41-39. But the Hornets regained the lead entering the fourth quarter. White River never looked back, the Hornets managed to hold onto its lead. This game was deciding what seed Sumner and White River would enter districts. With the loss, the Spartans go on to districts as the No. 2 seed. The Spartans will play an undecided at the time of press opponent at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Bellarmine Prep High School. The subdistricts started on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as the Sumner Spartans faced the Evergreen

Sumner scored the first points of the game and Evergreen kept it close until late in the second quarter. Sumner added 35 to its score. The second game of the tournament came on Thursday, Feb. 13 as Sumner beat Franklin Pierce 51-26. Entering districts the girls are 21-2 overall.

Sumner Boys The Sumner boys also hosted the subdistricts tournament which started on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The boys fought hard but came

up short, losing its first game of the tournament 64-57 to the Renton Indians. The Spartans trailed by five at the half, 28-23. The boys were down by as much as 10 in the second half and got as close as two but it wasn’t enough to take the lead away from the Indians. Sumner continued the tournament on Thursday against the Foster Bulldogs. The Spartans won 63-51. There was no third game for the Sumner boys, per a coin flip the Spartans are ranked sixth entering districts. The first game of the 2A districts tournament for the boys was at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17 at Foss High School where they played the Lindbergh Eagles. Bonney Lake Girls The Bonney Lake Panthers girls basketball team went 1-1 in the 3A subdistricts tournament.

The tournament continued on Friday, Feb. 14 for the Panthers as the girls faced off against the Enumclaw Hornets. The Panthers beat the Hornets 45-39 and will enter districts the third seed. Bonney Lake played Kelso in the first round of districts at 2:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17 at Clover Park High School. The Bonney Lake wrestling team flexed it skill and muscle at the district tournament. The Panthers took five district weight class titles Saturday at the district match. The days events were held at the Bonney Lake High School. Carson Corbale, 106 pounds, beat Jake Treece of Enumclaw 7-3 from the championship. At 132 Colton Tracy beat Zach Berry from Decatur 14-3. Tracy pinned his previous two opponents to get into the championship round. Caid Caveness, 145, beat Dennis Good from Decatur At 152 Cayle Williams pinned Christian Arag in 2 minutes, 50 seconds. Chili Sabin, 182, pinned Wyley Stweart from Enumclaw in 57 second. She took second on bars with 8.4 and fourth on the vault with 8.750. McCain will be competing for the all around along with Hailey Taylor and Nikole Otto, both from Bonney Lake. Meeting in the middle with a Volksmarch When it comes to exercise, my wife would describe me as a fanatic; I go to the gym several times a week and run or bicycle on the weekends. My idea of a fun weekend is to run a half-marathon or ride my bike to Crystal Mountain. My wife, Cathy, enjoys physical activity and hiking. She sees the value of exercise but often works late in her second-grade classroom. Cathy’s idea of a fun weekend is to snowshoe in Leavenworth or go for a wine walk in Enumclaw. As we transition to empty nesters, and with Stephanie’s encourage-

approaching. As we made the final turns to complete the walk we could see a timed finish line similar to competitive running events, and found ourselves speeding up for a spectacular photo finish. At the end we were greeted by the event hosts who applauded our effort and stamped our Volksmarch log book. We are now members of the Evergreen State Volkssport Association and are on their mailing list. It is our goal to participate in several more events this year. The next nearby staffed event is on March 8 and 9 at Northwest Trek

Feeding my love of storytelling I have always loved books and the art of storytelling. My dad read to my sisters and I every night when we were kids and my mom always took us to the library and let us check out as many books as we wanted. I read every Nancy Drew book, as well as the entire Trixie Belden series, and an abundance of books about horses. As a teenager I checked out — and read — every book the library had Katherine Smith about Walt Staff Writer Disney. I learned of Goodreads last spring, which has continued to feed my love of books. If you aren’t familiar with Goodreads, it’s essentially a social media site based entirely around the written word. Like Pinterest but only for books. A way to organize the chaos. The site lets you create bookshelves and organize books, track what you’ve read or what you want to read. You can also connect with friends and see what is on their bookshelves or browse lists of books. You get the idea. This does create a slight problem, though: there’s

The definition of a plutocrat is “a person who derives power from wealth.” Warren Buffet fits in that category. Buffet said in 2011 about the U.S. government: “We are still a democracy, but we have moved in my lifetime towards a plutocracy. We do not have a plutocracy, I want to emphasize that, but the distribution of wealth and the influence of wealth have moved in that direction.” These are troubling words from Buffett, but he should know. Ironically, though, he, like other plutocrats in their own areas, has gained greatly from government help in order to create monopolies. In 2009, his company, Berkshire Hathaway, purchased 77 percent of the shares of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for $44 billion, according to David Cay Johnston in his best seller “The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use Plain English to Rob You Blind.” (You can see BNSF railcars in Auburn.) Had you purchased $1 worth of stocks in BNSF just after Buffett bought the lion’s share, the value would have grown to $3.75 by 2012, much better than the stock market a year after the 2008 economic crash.

By understanding how he did it, we can consider what it says about Buffett, and plutocrats as a group. BNSF is a near monopoly, controlling 49 percent of rail traffic in the West. For farmers who need to ship their products to the cities, it’s the cheapest and virtually only means they have to do so. Truck hauling is far too expensive compared to trains. Farmers are considered “captive shippers.” Forty-four percent of rail freight in 2012 was coal. According to Johnston, the best and most sulfurfree coal comes from Wyoming. The federal government limits coal production to cut down on air pollution, so most of the U.S. coal comes from Wyoming. Therefore the price is

higher. This was a factor in Buffett’s purchase of BNSF. Just before Buffet bought BNSF, the Surface Transportation Board, which regulates the industry, made an announcement that BNSF’s rates were too low – meaning that they could be raised. The STB tends to have more empathy for the railroads than it has for rail customers. That is the current attitude of both state and the federal regulatory agencies toward large corporations, according to Johnston. Buffett, in buying the BNSF, now had two positive ways to make a profit: the opportunity to raise rail rates and a near monopoly on shipping coal. Buffett is known to prefer “market monopolies.” Competition, as Buffet says, “tends to eat up any excess profits.” This is the antithesis of capitalism, which is supposed to thrive on competition. Buffet also owns an electric utility in Oregon, PacifiCorp, which uses coal to generate electricity. So not only does he control a railroad virtual monopoly, he also owns another government-regulated monopoly, a

Early spring has early bloomers taking the stage Early spring means dwarf daffodils, crocus, hellebores, forsythia and even some flowering plum trees are edging onto the stage as the big show of petalperformers unfolds. Take a moment to take in this budding introduction, then get to work on early-spring garden chores. Cut back ornamental grasses that have browned and dried during the winter. If you chop these dormant grasses to the ground now – before they sprout – you won’t have to worry about disturbing the fresh new growth later on. While you are out there cleaning up, be sure to rake away any faded hosta foliage before the slug eggs hatch. Start raking the debris and loose grass from your lawn and get your mowing machine tuned up and sharpened – soon you’ll be ready to mow. I love to eat fresh asparagus. done well with other vegetables in my raised bed garden beds. M., Olympia Be patient and you’ll be harvesting your own asparagus in two or three years. Asparagus is a perennial which means it will return year after year unlike most vegetables that are annuals and need replanting each spring. February is the time to buy asparagus roots from a garden center or nursery. This crop prefers full sun but will adapt to part sun as long as you make sure the soil is fertile and well drained. Your raised beds will be ideal. First, layer

the top of your soil with at least six inches of compost and work this into the top 24 inches of soil. Next dig a ditch 18 inches deep and lay the brown roots called “asparagus crowns” into the bottom of this trench, spacing them 2 feet apart. Cover the roots with 4 inches of soil and wait a month. When you see green shoots emerging, add more soil and then continue adding soil as the shoots grow taller. Once the trench is filled, add a mulch and keep the asparagus bed weeded – asparagus is one plant that hates competition. You won’t be able to harvest the new shoots of asparagus this year but your second spring will provide the first of many future harvests. Asparagus is easy to grow when you keep the area weed-free and well-mulched. I bought some primroses from the grocery store. Planted them into the ground and now they have almost disap-

peared! First the flowers went and now the leaves are disappearing. What is eating them? T.Y., Puyallup My best guess is that those primrose thieves are slimy slugs. Look for traces of slime and scalloped bite marks on the leaves and any flower petals. Primroses with bright colors and large blooms are the common polyantha varieties that slugs love. The more expensive English type primroses have smaller but more slug-resistant blooms and foliage. You find these hardier English primroses at nurseries rather than grocery stores. A pet-safe slug bait like Worry Free will protect not just primroses but any plant with tender spring growth. Baiting now will help control future generations of slugs in your garden. A practical way to enjoy the early-blooming and inexpensive primroses is to leave them in their plastic nursery pots and

display them in porch or patio pots using moss or bark chips to hide the plastic containers. The recent snow storms and subfreezing temperatures in the aftermath of Seahawk celebrations mask the fact that the spring pruning season will soon arrive. February through April is the traditional time for pruning fruit trees. Winter is also a good time to work on ornamental trees because it is easier to determine what needs to be pruned before new leaves begin to grow. There are three major items to consider when planning your spring tree work. First, fruit trees will benefit from pruning to enhance fruit production.

Responsible tree services and certified arborists will discourage tree topping. The key to successful ornamental pruning is to have the final result look as if very little has been done to a tree.

Overgrown Trees

If a tree is too wide or tall for its space, there are at least two options: 1 – Carefully select some of the longer, u nsig ht ly bra nches. Either cut them back to where they join a larger branch or the main trunk or lightly trim them back

to a shorter length. 2 – Remove the tree and plant one that will grow to fill, not overcrowd, a chosen space. This is much preferable to doing a severe pruning job. Be aware that the height estimates on nursery labels are often conservative.

Do the Right Thing

I often ask a homeowner what he or she wants a tree to look like. Sometimes I have to explain why their request may not be practical or healthy for a tree and we will discuss some options. This should be the approach of any knowledgeable and responsible tree pruner. Sometimes a homeowner will tell me to “do what I think needs to be done.” This can be a dangerous instruction to give because some tree

pruners do not know the correct way to treat ornamental trees. The results may be painful to look at. And it might be even more painful to write a check. I always insist that a homeowner be present during a job. That way he or she can immediately approve or express concerns of the work in progress and be available to ask or answer questions. So, Oregon taxpayers unknowingly pay a state tax that goes directly into the pockets of PacifiCorp. Buffet raised railroad rates, which in turn raised utility rates in Oregon. This meant he benefited from rising prices from both companies, and the consumers were held captive to those rising costs. Railroad executives used to complain about employee “featherbedding” by unions who did not allow railroads to lay off excess workers. “Now we have, by

government policy, what might be called ‘capital featherbedding’. But you won’t hear the railroad executives gripe about that,” Johnston writes. Part of the problem with the nation today is that plutocrats have been able to control government through lobbying of Congress and by financing political campaigns, thus buying influence. This, in turn, increases profits for the super wealthy and creates monopolies. The consumer experiences rising prices and reduced buying power while the superrich like Buffett and other plutocrats get even richer. Buffett’s giving away of part of his wealth to noble causes conceals the money-grubbing plutocrat he really is. We are truly living in a second Gilded Age – bright and shiny gold on the outside, but of low quality on the inside.

Sumner students host benefit night Staff Writer

Fate has a way of throwing curve balls from time to time – life-threatening illness, house fires and other catastrophes occur daily. For local community member and soccer coach Darren Painter, several of those events collided into an approximate three-year time frame, culminating with a cancer diagnosis last June. For eight years, the annual Sumner High School ASB Benefit Night Talent Show and Dinner Auction has donated 100 percent of its proceeds to support and uplift a local family in the midst of struggle. Painter is the recipient this year. Doctors told Painter he has a lethal form of melanoma skin cancer, with about a 10 to 15 percent chance of survival. The family has faced other challenges in the recent past, including a house fire during the 2011 holiday season that nearly destroyed their home. And in 2010, a heart condition caused Painter’s wife Kerry to fight for her life. She survived and now stands by her husband as he fights for his. The Painter family includes five children. Painter is currently unemployed but he receives supplemental income from his passion; painting. He also spends his free time as a Mt. Rainier soccer club girls coach. “Open your heart, and

One of my good friends from high school, Julie Nordyke Moltke, was a past recipient and greatly benefited from this event. It’s special to be a part of something that made a direct contribution to a personal friend, who has since passed away,” Wilkins said. Two talent shows will also be held at 7 p.m., Feb. 20 and 21 in the Sumner High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $8 per person and may be purchased at the door. Both evenings will include acts performed by students and other community members.

me a book on breaking the rules of grammar, so there’s that. Currently on my Kindle, I’m reading “The Everything Store” – yes, note the irony there. After that I have “I am Malala” waiting for me, not to mention the two books by Rich Sterns I have from the library. And I’m halfway through “Jane Eyre,” but since I own that it’s lower on the priority list. Side note, I thought “Jane Eyre” was a nice

little story, and then all of the sudden the manor was on fire and the guy was pretending to be a fortune teller and I was all, ‘what just happened?’ So yeah, I’ll have to get back to that. Technically, according to Goodreads, I’m still reading “Reporting Vietnam” — an anthology of reporting from during the Vietnam War. I was reading it over the summer but ran out of renewals at the library

and had to finally return it. Someday I’ll be able to click “completed.” See how this snowballs? Works by C.S. Lewis and A.W. Tozer have also made my reading list recently, as have a smattering of things that fit into the dystopian lit genre. I highly recommend “The Book Thief ” for those who haven’t read it. It’s creative and beautiful and sad. And so good. And endlessly quotable. “The human heart is

a line, whereas my own is a circle, and I have the endless ability to be in the right place at the right time. The consequence of this is that I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” See? The book is narrated by Death — who is talking in the aforementioned quote — which at first sounds rather morbid, but it’s a fascinating

perspective and was one of the things that drew me into the book. And all of this doesn’t even begin to touch on movies and the annual rush to get caught up before the Oscars, which is really the only awards show I watch, so I figure I should at least know something about some of the nominees. So much story, so little time. But it’s fun, and I keep trying to catch up anyway.

See, it started off with a shelf for books about journalism – the history, the current state of things, anthologies of great works of journalism. Then came the fiction and nonfiction and Disney — yes, I have a Disney bookshelf — and all kinds of other shelves. Oy with the poodles already. I’m also a frequent flyer over at the library. I’ve been known to check out way more books in a month than I could ever possibly read. It’s the “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” thing, but in this case it’s that my curiosity is bigger than my available amounts of time. Last summer Kris Hill laughed with (at?) me when I would run over to the library to pick up another stack of journalism books and come trooping back in with them. But then she made the problem worse by loaning
