At its maximum production, the facility is expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 10,000 homes per year. Who will become Tacoma's Biggest Carbon Loser? Go ahead and take it personally. It's what the Sustainable Tacoma Commission wants you to do. Of the City's 23 volunteer committees, boards and commissions, it's the Sustainable Tacoma Commission's responsibility to oversee implementation of Tacoma's Climate Action Plan for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through accountability, transparency and vigilance. To that end, the Sustainable Tacoma Commission is taking their service a step above these already worthy contributions through a Tacoma's Biggest Carbon Loser challenge. Five of the Commission's members are inviting the community to learn from their personal efforts to reduce carbon emissions at home. Residents can follow their progress through a series of videos being made in collaboration through a University of Washington Tacoma communications class project. "It's about walking the talk," said commission member and effort organizer Ellen Moore. "If we're going to be looking at policies and efforts around these issues, we should have a good idea of what that means on a personal level." The Commission hopes other Tacomans will be inspired to join the challenge. Residents can calculate their own carbon footprint online at cityoftacoma.org and learn some suggested changes. Then, they can enhance their lifestyles with new habits that decrease carbon emissions. The commission members' carbon weights will be revealed and the biggest loser (winner) crowned at the free Saturday, March 1 South Sound Sustainability Expo. City Showcases Tacoma's News on 'Tacoma Report' The City of Tacoma's Media and Communications Office has launched its first edition of "Tacoma Report," a contemporary program featuring news and human interest stories about City services and programs and Tacoma's nonprofits and special events. The show airs on the City's municipal television station TV Tacoma. "Tacoma needed its very own local news show," said City of Tacoma Media and Communications Manager Gwen Schuler. "'Tacoma Report' is a fastpaced look at the news that affects the lives of those in our community." The first show will air now through the end of the month when it will be replaced with the March edition. The show is scheduled to air on channel 12 for Click! and Comcast customers in the city limits and on channel 21 for Click! and Comcast customers in Pierce County. University Place residents who are Comcast customers do not receive TV Tacoma broadcasting. "The first two shows will each air for a month and our goal is to begin producing a new edition every-other-week this spring," said Schuler. Tacoma seeks nominees for City of Destiny Awards

Posted online Weds., Feb. 12 Image Courtesy City of Tacoma The City of Tacoma is accepting nominations for the 28th annual City of Destiny Awards, which spotlights exceptional volunteers who have worked to drive Tacoma forward. To qualify for a City of Destiny Award, the individuals or groups you nominate must have volunteered time and energy, not money; volunteered without financial compensation for their work; volunteered within Tacoma's city limits; volunteered within the past 12 months in the projects described for Leadership and Group categories; and volunteered in a different category if they have previously received a City of Destiny Award, or in the same category seven years after receiving a City of Destiny Award. Over the years, the City of Tacoma has honored over 200 local volunteers through the awards program, which is spearheaded by a

City Council appointed City Events and Recognition Committee comprised of local community leaders from a broad array of backgrounds and areas of expertise. This committee develops the City of Destiny Awards nomination tools and selection criteria, selects the City of Destiny Awards winners, and plans the annual City of Destiny Awards event. Nominations for the 28th annual City of Destiny Awards are being accepted now through March 31. Talbert to chair Pierce Transit Board

Photo Courtesy Pierce County The Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners Monday elected Pierce County Councilmember Rick Talbert to serve as its Chair effective March 1. Talbert replaces Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, whose second one-year term as Chair ends on Feb. 28. Talbert has served as a Pierce Transit Commissioner during his eight years on Tacoma City Council and for four additional years since his election to Pierce County Council in 2010. "We now have the opportunity to build service back as the recovery continues," said Talbert, referring to Pierce Transit's increased sales tax revenue and a focus on efficiency and innovation.
