The Lystedt family had planned an epic Super Bowl party in their spacious, unincorporated Maple Valley home: a live performance of the National Anthem and food and drink to feed 50-100 fans. But Victor Lystedt received a phone call on the Monday before the big game that changed everything. “The commissioner called and asked us to go,” Victor said. The surprise invitation from NFL commissioner Roger Goddell was for more than the triumph of a Seahawks championship birth. It was a celebration of the state of Mississippi, which joined the rest of the nation on Jan. 30 by signing a youth concussion act into law. Discussion of the sign code as it pertains to community and civic groups in Maple Valley is headed back to the Planning Commission for further review. Surgeons removed both sides of Lystedt’s skull to stop multiple brain bleeds and the teenager spent the next three months in and out of comas. It took 13 months to move any parts of his body — and then it was only a left finger — and the ordeal included two years in hospitals, four weeks in a nursing home and 20 months on a feeding tube. In others, it’s still just beginning. From the legislative standpoint, Zackery is willing to testify before Congress in order to unify each of the state’s laws into the official Zackery Lystedt law. “There will be more in my corner than out of my corner,” he said. But why bother pushing through more bureaucracy to get Zack’s name on every law? “He’s conceited,” Victor said

While the law pushes forward, the physical and mental components of Zackery’s journey are encouraging. Though the 21 year old still struggles with his memory and has trouble when traversing wide open spaces, his accomplishments are far more astounding. After being unable to move his right leg for five years, he can now lift it off the ground. He can also walk across the house with the help of a cane. Victor believes his son could walk 300 yards by himself. He strives for full physical independence. And while the steps are coming, Zackery hopes to build on his social life with a girlfriend — or three. “I’m single,” he said. “And looking.” This isn’t to say that Zackery isn’t popular. Bright Lights of Broadway to put on its first production, a revue of love songs from musicals, this weekend

COMMUNITY COLLECTS SUPPLIES FOR FOOD BANK Community members donated a total of 1,719 pounds of food to the Black Diamond Community Center’s Food Bank in January. Cheryl Hanson, Executive Director of the center, said much of the giving came from the Lake Sawyer Christian Church and the Enumclaw School District. “These food donations help so many in our community,” Hanson said in an email. “With the SNAP program reduced, more donations are needed to feed all those in our community who are hungry.”

A living room became a stage last week as performers worked out the details of their songs in preparation for “With love, Bright Lights of Broadway” this weekend. Pam Shinsato, who founded the group, Bright Lights of Broadway, said that she has been involved in theater for a long time and that she wanted to have another community theater option. Two performances of a musical revue presenting love songs from Broadway musicals on Saturday will be the first production by the group. “It’s really meant for professionals who don’t do this professionally,” Shinsato said of those involved in the group. The show will include 19 songs woven together by dialogue and features over 40 community members

of all ages from Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond, as well as other cities in the area. To select the songs, Shinsato and Lisa Hogg, musical director for the production, said that they started off with some of their favorites and compiled a list of ideas. From there they picked the final songs based on old favorites and songs that worked well for the performers. “We just tried to give a balance in a lot of different ways,” Shinsato said. One of the fun aspects of a musical revue, Shinsato added, is that the performers can take artistic license with the songs, from reimagining the characters to performers being able to change the lyrics. Shinsato said that the show will act as a fundraiser to provide scholarships for Tahoma High School seniors who can’t afford the cost of attending grad night. Shinsato’s daughter

their family’s involvement in community theater over the years. “I do love that it’s all the different acts,” Jennifer Rockwood said. “So we get to do it on our own and then create something grand.” While running last week, Wellborn said she was listening to the soundtrack from “Les Miserables” when she was reminded of what she loves about theater. “It’s inspiring,” Wellborn said. “That is what this show is about, inspiring people to love.”

I have always loved books and the art of storytelling. My dad read to my sisters and I every night when we were kids and my mom always took us to the library and let us check out as many books as we wanted. I read every Nancy Drew book, as well as the entire Trixie Belden series, and an abundance of books about horses. As a teenager I checked out — and read — every book the library had about Walt Disney. I learned of Goodreads last spring, which has continued to feed my love of books. If you aren’t familiar with Goodreads, it’s essentially a social media site based entirely around the written word. Like Pinterest but only for books. A way to organize the chaos. The site lets you create bookshelves and organize books, track what you’ve read or what you want to read. You can also connect with friends and see what is on their bookshelves or browse lists of books. You get the idea. This does create a slight problem, though: there’s not enough time to read all the good books. Every time I finish a book, I add at least three more. It’s basically fighting a losing battle. See, it started off with a shelf for books about journalism – the history, the current state of things, anthologies of great works of journalism. Then came the fiction and nonfiction and Disney — yes, I have a Disney bookshelf — and all kinds of other shelves. Oy with the poodles already. I’m also a frequent flyer over at the library. I’ve been known to check out way more books in a month than I could ever possibly read. It’s the “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” thing, but in this case it’s that my curiosity is bigger than my available amounts of time. Last summer Kris Hill laughed with (at?) me when I would run over to the library to pick up

More education funding needed In Washington state, the biennial operating budget is written in the oddnumbered years and determines how our resources will be utilized for the next two years. However, things rapidly change in our economy and we usually have to do some mid-biennium tweaking in the even-numbered years – what we call a supplemental budget. Those tweaks are often necessary because of things like more kids than expected enrolling in public schools, an increase in prison populations or an extreme fire season. Additionally, the last several supplemental budgets have required substantial cuts in state services due to the effects of the Great Recession.

Currently on my Kindle, I’m reading “The Everything Store” – yes, note the irony there. After that I have “I am Malala” waiting for me, not to mention the two books by Rich Sterns I have from the library. And I’m halfway through “Jane Eyre,” but since I own that it’s lower on the priority list. Side note, I thought “Jane Eyre” was a nice little story, and then all of the sudden the manor was on fire and the guy was pretending to be a fortune teller and I was all, ‘what just happened?’ So yeah, I’ll have to get back to that. Technically, according to Goodreads, I’m still reading “Reporting Vietnam” — an anthology of reporting from during the Vietnam War. I was reading it over the summer but ran out of renewals at the library and had to finally return it. Someday I’ll be able to click “completed.” See how this snowballs? Works by C.S. Lewis and A.W. Tozer have also

made my reading list recently, as have a smattering of things that fit into the dystopian lit genre. I highly recommend “The Book Thief ” for those who haven’t read it. It’s creative and beautiful and sad. And so good. And endlessly quotable. “The human heart is a line, whereas my own is a circle, and I have the endless ability to be in the right place at the right time. The consequence of this is that I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” See? The book is narrated by Death — who is talking in the aforementioned quote — which at first sounds rather morbid, but it’s a fascinating perspective and was one of the things that drew me into the book. And all of this doesn’t even begin to touch on movies and the annual rush to get caught up before the Oscars, which is really the only awards show I watch, so I figure I should at least know something about some of the nominees. So much story, so little time. But it’s fun, and I keep trying to catch up anyway.

This year, we also have to address the most recent Supreme Court order on school funding. Just last month, the court said the Legislature needed to make more progress on our constitutional duty to fully fund basic education for all Washington children. The 2012 Legislature established the Joint Task Force on Education Funding to develop a proposal for a reliable and dependable funding mechanism to support basic education programs. The task force was instrumental in constructing a comprehensive plan and the original House 2013-15 budget proposal followed the work done by this task force, adding $1.3 billion in new school funding. However, the final budget only included $1 billion in education enhancements and the Supreme Court did not find that to be adequate progress. Recently, Gov. Jay Inslee called for an additional $200 million in school funding to be approved this session. That’s going to be a difficult thing to achieve in this short session for a variety of reasons. The current operating budget doesn’t have

an extra $200 million just sitting around – the ending fund balance is just over $53 million. And, as I mentioned above, we have new expenses that must be paid for, including several devastating wildfires. The governor proposed ending some non-performing tax loopholes and investing instead on our schools. But every tax loophole has its supporters and it’s never easy to close them. Nearly two-thirds of any operating budget is protected, either by the constitution or the federal government, and can’t be cut. That means any funding we move out of the existing budget into education comes at the expense of things like our colleges and universities, the Department of Corrections, our environment or health care and other human services.

The Kentwood Conquerorâ€™s medley relay team started finals at the West Central District III meet by setting a new school record and earning a fourth place finish. The relay team of seniors Dane Turnbull, Kevin Molloy, Brian Wright and Logan Stoick posted a time of 1 minute, 42.07 seconds. The team turned in impressive swims throughout the meet and finished fifth overall. Curtis, Gig Harbor, Kentridge and Mount Rainier claimed the first four team spots. Kentlake

finished 10th overall and Tahoma finished 12th. Also in the 200 medley relay the Kentlake team of Quentin Knox, Jalen Koon, Elias Knoblock and Colin Bryant finished 10th in 1:50.77 and Tahomaâ€™s relay of Chris Hatch, Ethan Wunschel, Tavares DeLeon and Tyler Rinck finished 11th in 1:53.70. In the next event Kentwoodâ€™s Wright finished second by .35 seconds in the 200 freestyle final behind Noah Willers of Stadium High. Wright finished in a state qualifying time of 1:47.60. Sophomore Patrick Knox of Kentlake finished 16th with a time of 2:01.48.

Coleman Blakely of Tahoma finished 14th in the 200 individual medley followed by Cole Hendricks form Kentwood in 15th. Turnbull finished 6th in the 50 free in his first individual swim of the night, posting a state qualifying time of 22.59. Tahomaâ€™s Stephen Millard finished 4th in diving with a score of 300.40. Evan Eidal of Kentlake finished right behind in 5th with a score of 298.45. Those finishes secured a trip to the state competition later this month for both Millard and Eidal. Loren Natario of Kentwood finished 14th with a score of 223.20.

In the 100 butterfly event Molly finished fifth with a time of 56.03. Knobloch, a freshman, finished 9th in the same event with a time of 56.60 and his teammate Quentin Knox finished 11th with a time of 57.94. Wright turned in another state qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, finishing fourth with a time of 49.52. Stoick finished 8th with a time of 50.93. In the 500 free Knobloch finished 8th with a time of 5:13.68. Fellow Kentlake falcon Colin Bryant finished 13th with a time of 5:30.18 and falcon Patrick Knox finished 15th with a time of 5:34.06.

The Kentwood 200 freestyle relay of Andrew Stone, Hendricks, Tjay Mason, and Blake Rizzo finished 6th in 1:35.58. The Tahoma relay of Rinck, Wunschel, Blakely, and Cory Cox finished 10th in 1:36.55, and the Kentlake relay of Eidal, Jonathan Elliot, Koon, and Patrick Knox finished 13th in 1:42.70. Kentwood had two top finishers, Turnbull and Stoick, in the 100 backstroke who finished 5th and 7th, respectively. Kentlake had two finalists in the 100 breaststroke Quentin Knox who finished 9th and Bryant who finished 16th. In the same

event Edward Quintos finished 14th for Kentwood. In the last event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay, the Kentwood relay of Stoick, Molly, Turnbull and Wright finished 4th in a time of 3:26.77. The relay of Quentin Knox, Knoblock, Patrick Knox and Bryant finished 10th and the team of Rinck, Cooper Mattern, Wunschel, and Blakely from Tahoma finished 13th.

Next up in the boys swim and dive post season is the State Championship meet the weekend of Jan.21 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Set the trap above ground just in front of the small opening hole in the ground. Put the mouse trap â€“ or, better yet, two traps spaced six inches apart â€“ so they are situated at a right angle to the opening and protect your traps from pets by covering the opening and the traps with a bucket. You can prop one end of the bucket with a stone to allow the mice to enter. Peanut butter seems the preferred bait but a bit of cotton

There are mouse traps that catch the rodents alive but be warned that mice are carriers of a serious disease as well as parasites; do not handle even a dead mouse without gloves. You can plant strawberries, raspberries, roses, fruit trees and bare-root trees and shrubs as soon as you see them for sale. Plants sold without soil around their roots are dormant and less expensive than potted plant material. Soak any bare root plant in water overnight before planting. Then be patient. You strawberries may stay dormant for another month or so before waking up and putting down roots in their new home.

The primary duty of a Circulation Manager (CM) is to manage a geographic district. The CM will be accountable for the assigned newspaper as follows: Recruiting, contracting and training independent contractors to meet delivery deadlines, insuring delivery standards are being met and quality customer service. Position requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner; to occasionally lift and/or transport bundles weighing up to 25 pounds from ground level to a height of 3 feet; to deliver newspaper routes, including ability to negotiate stairs and to deliver an average of 75 newspapers per hour for up to 8 consecutive hours; to communicate with carriers and the public by telephone and in person; to operate a personal computer. Must possess reliable, insured, motor vehicle and a valid Washington State driverâ€™s license.
