Celski blogs about son, Olympic speedskater New Mirror blog to chronicle Council member’s trip to Sochi, Russia With the Opening Ceremonies scheduled for the next night (Friday, Feb. 12, 2010), and his first event, the 1,500 meter scheduled for the following Saturday evening, the coaches were pressing the skaters hard to remain in their rooms to rest instead of participating. Well, J.R. would have none of that, and eventually after several negotiations (and calling dad for advice on how to deal with the coaches), reason prevailed. The athletes were allowed to walk and then would leave early. We found out the night before the Opening Ceremonies that he would participate, answering our concern about whether he would be allowed to walk in the Opening Ceremonies. There was no way he would come this far and miss a lifetime milestone like this. First concern taken care of – check. J.R. went on to win the Bob Celski

his blog is written to keep the proud people of Federal Way informed about one of the city’s sons, short track speedskater J.R. Celski and the experience of his parents, Bob and Sue, during the Olympics. When Sue and I were driving on Interstate 5 somewhere north of Seattle on our way to the Vancouver Olympics on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, we were really only concerned about two things. First, was J.R. going to be allowed to walk in the Opening Ceremonies, and second, how would he perform against the best in the world after recovering from one of the most serious injuries his sport has ever seen. He hadn’t competed in more than five months since the Olympic Trials in mid-September 2009, and only started training back on the ice after Thanksgiving 2009, just more than two months before the opening ceremonies.

Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell revealed the nine members of the Blue Ribbon Panel that will help provide objective expertise on the proposed Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC) during the Federal Way City Council meeting on Feb. 4.

Ferrell characterized the members of the panel as “the best and the brightest” in the local community, so they can bring “the full weight of that intellectual capability to an issue that has been debated and bandied around” in Federal Way for a number of years. The nine members include Dave Berger, a retired city, government and eco-

nomic development manager; Steve Lewis, a former president of Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company; Scott Brown, the director of operations for Piramco, Inc; Rob Harpster, owner of Olympic Aerospace; Susan Streifel, CEO, Woodstone Credit Union; Kathi Ferrari, vice president/principal business banker for Wells Fargo N.A.; Pam Smith,

arlier this week, the Federal Way City Council and I had the pleasure of introducing the nine members of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Panel for the Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC). This is a historic moment for Federal Way in bringing together such an experienced team to help guide a key decision on downtown economic development. The reasons for assembling a “Dream Team” of local expertise are twofold. First, we need to have the best information possible before making a decision on the PACC. Second, time is of the essence and the panel will help bring us to a place of action. Before I delve into this, I want to thank the following volunteer panel members: Dave Berger, retired city manager; Scott Brown, director of operations at Piramco; Brian Bullard, branch manager, Columbia Bank; Kathi Ferrari, vice president, Wells Fargo Bank; Rob Harpster, owner of Olympic Aerospace; Steve Lewis, retired president, Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company; Mildred Olle’e, retired college administrator; Pam Smith, director, Auburn Performing Arts Center; and Susan Streifel, CEO of Woodstone Credit Union. It would be difficult to find a better group of local expertise than this. We deeply appreciate their willingness to serve the community in this effort. We convened the panel to provide objective, critical analysis of the operational pro forma for the facility, the financing plan and construction estimates, and the economic impact to the city and its downtown core. Simultaneously, an independent consultant is updating the facility pro forma that our panel will review. In pulling together the panel, I have consulted with Deputy Mayor Jeanne Burbidge and Council members. We all agree that the panel must be objective. Panel membership reflects that goal, containing experts in finance, management, performing arts and other disciplines, and people who’ve not taken public positions pro or con on the project. The panel will issue findings of fact and report to the City Council at a special meeting in April. All the information the panel reviews and produces will be available at www.cityoffederalway.com/ PACC and the public is invited to participate in the discussions at the March 8 Council retreat, a special Council study session in April and future meetings. Levy will change students’ lives I am lucky to have spent the last 13 years as a student of the Federal Way school district. As a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School, I often look back at the teachers and experiences that have molded me into the individual I am today. The upcoming levy is something that affects students like myself directly. This levy provides opportunities for each of the students in this district to grow, learn and better themselves.

Will mayor’s agenda align with community’s priorities? It has already been an interesting year at City Hall and we are only in the first week of February. New Mayor Jim Ferrell has been careful not to ruffle any feathers. But he wants to keep his campaign promises and really lead, so it is only a matter of time. He got a break, and was cast well as “cheerleader in chief ” when the Seahawks went to and won the Super Bowl. City Hall and the parking lot were full of excitement. But the setting also highlighted a major community need and another challenge for Ferrell. Federal Way’s City Hall is in the wrong location to serve as the central gathering place for community events. It should be moved downtown. What do you suppose the economic and community impact would be if City Hall, the Police Department and Municipal Court, along with a new park were located downtown? That idea should fit into the discussion of the community’s priorities and Ferrell’s agenda. One of Ferrell’s biggest challenges will be how to get his agenda supported by the Council and a broader array of voters. Currently, the City Council and Ferrell appear to have different priorities. And that will become more noticeable as the year unfolds. Ferrell’s priorities are financial stability, as it is with all mayors; public safety, where he has stated he wants to add 10-12 police officers, which will be expensive; and economic development, which means establishing a better game plan for recruitment of businesses and jobs, and

deciding where he wants Patrick Doherty to focus his time. Right now, Doherty has three full-time jobs with the Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC), planning, and economic development. And the PACC likely wouldn’t even be in Ferrell’s top 10 priorities. But with the majority of the Council, it might be No. 1. While the Council wouldn’t necessarily disagree with Ferrell’s priorities in a public setting, all their movements suggest that the PACC is their highest priority. And that has the mayor and Council headed down a path where common ground may prove elusive. From a political perspective, many PACC leaders weren’t Ferrell voters in the last election. And if he doesn’t fully embrace the PACC, they may not be his voters next election either. But that is four years away and Ferrell needs to build support for other priorities that he wants. As a result, he has been cautious to avoid an outright confrontation. Ferrell made a strategic move to add a city administrator position to help manage the daily affairs of the city and start to establish control of City Hall. But he sidestepped a confrontation with the Council by calling it a chief of staff position, which avoided a Council confirmation process. And he picked former police Chief Brian Wilson for the job. Wilson is well liked by the council, so he again avoided a confrontation. Possibly a good move in the short-term,

Project will destroy city’s character I recently attended a meeting with a group of concerned Federal Way residents regarding the proposed building of a sixstory, 308-unit apartment complex at the old bus barn on 320th Street across from Safeway. The proposed apartment complex is the worst idea that I have ever heard. The

property is much too small for 308 apartments, which is why they will be forced to build some of the units six stories tall. Building that many apartments in such a small area will only lead to trouble. Have you ever seen any of the large public housing projects in large cities in the East? They weren’t so bad when they were new, but look what happened in a few years. They quickly became dangerous crime and drug infested nightmares and were eventually torn down. inappropriate. Why put this city, not to mention the people who live in the neighborhood directly adjacent to the property, through that? The traffic problems that will surely develop will be a terrible problem. We already have too many traffic problems in that area. There are several preferable choices for this property, including senior housing or a community college, just to name a couple. I don’t live in the neighborhood adjacent to the old bus barn property, but I have lived in this area most of my life. My parents bought a home here in 1955 and I attended elementary school in a little building directly behind Federal Way High School. I also attended junior high at the Federal Way High School building and transferred to Lakota Junior High upon its completion in the early 1960s. It just drives me crazy when I see how people in charge (whose main concern

should be what is best for our city) continually make decisions that destroy the character of our city. I am so very tired of receiving a negative reaction when I tell someone where I live. They view our city as undesirable and I am tired of being embarrassed of where I live. Because of my long history in this area and the memories that I have, this is where my heart is, but I don’t know how much longer I can continue to live here when city leaders continue to approve changes that aren’t in the best interest of the people who live here. Someone at the meeting stated that the poverty rate for Federal Way is 77 percent. If it gets any higher, there will be no quality of life for our city at all. I acknowledge that low-income housing is important, but how much is enough for one city? One doesn’t have to look far to observe that Federal Way is already inundated with apartments. The proposed apartments will take the

City should act on PACC with von Reichbauer’s vision King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer received a key to the city of Federal Way on Jan. 22 for many reasons. One of them is the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center that came to Federal Way because of von Reichbauer. This 2,500 seat aquatic facility now hosts more than 50 national and international competitions annually. The Aug. 31, 2012 Mirror stated that King [ more LETTERS page 34 ]

conversation – is critical because this community needs to move forward on downtown economic development. The PACC has been discussed and debated for years as a signature project to jump-start economic development in the city core and create a sense of place in our downtown. It’s time to finish the discussion and move to action: either with this project or with an alternative economic development effort, if the PACC numbers don’t pencil out. The Council has the heavy responsibility of making that decision. The city and community needs the most complete set of facts and figures upon which to base that decision. As Thomas Jefferson said, “Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error.” The panel will provide that final level of rigorous inquiry and fact finding that is needed to reach a decision. This is the essence

February 7, 2014 [9] of democratic government in action: elected representatives and local experts having this discussion in public. It’s the right direction to take on such an important project, but it has to lead to action. The community’s

future is heavily dependent on the success of downtown economic development and it is vital that we begin building that future now.

t was literally a sea of Seahawk blue and green Wednesday afternoon throughout the streets of downtown Seattle. Truly a spectacle to witness. Something I will remember for the rest of my life. The parade celebrated the Seattle Seahawks’ historic victory at Super Bowl 48 Sunday. It was Seattle at its best. The city is so passionate about everything it does and the connection between this year’s Seahawks and their fans is unprecedented. There’s no other NFL team that has the amount of passion as the muchtalked about 12th Man. None. Humvees and “Ducks” drove around the entire Seattle Seahawks’ staff and players, including owner

According to numbers thrown out by whoever were throwing them out, there was more than 700,000 people on the streets of Seattle Wednesday. I truly have no idea how many people were there. I just know there were a lot of Seahawks fans throughout the parade route. I was lucky enough to be able to experience the parade with my kids. And, like kids do, there were some things that happened Wednesday that they complained about. It had to be pretty overwhelming for them with all the people and the cold temperatures. Casey Olson

They aren’t going to remember every little thing from Wednesday when they are reminiscing in five years. They aren’t going to remember how much traffic there was, how cold it was outside or how much their dad spent on a Seahawks sweatshirt for them. What they are going to remember is that they were there. They will be able to tell their kids that they were there the first time the Seattle Seahawks won a Super Bowl. They are the trailblazers. The center of the South Puget Sound League South Division basketball universe is Todd Beamer High School. The basketball programs at Beamer are a combined 30-0 in SPSL South play this season and both Quinessa Caylao-do will have the opportunity to hang championship banners inside the school’s gymnasium. It’s the second-straight SPSL South title for the girls and first for the Beamer boys. The third-ranked and unbeaten Titan girls dominated a pair of games this week, beating secondplace Puyallup Tuesday, 48-33, and blowing away Graham-Kapowsin last Friday. Another year, another big-time party at Federal Way High School on National Signing Day. The Eagles had five student-athletes ink national letters of intent Wednesday inside the school’s less-than-packed cafeteria. Wednesday marked the first day high school students in several college sports, most notably football, could sign with colleges. Federal Way football players Keenan Curran and Jay-Tee Tiuli, along with five-time state swimming champion Kenna Ramey, track star Hannah Cunliffe and goalkeeper Ben Willis all signed Division-I scholarships during a ceremony that just happened to be smack dab in the middle of the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl Parade downtown, which was at-

tended by over 700,000 people. Curran will play defensive back at the United States Air Force Academy and the massive Tiuli will play on the line at Eastern Washington. Ramey will swim at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., Cunliffe will run track at the University of Oklahoma and Willis will play soccer at Gonzaga University. Last February, a school-record eight kids signed with colleges from Federal Way High School and four of them hailed from the highly-successful Eagle football team. Players signing Division-I, fullride scholarships is nothing new for the Federal Way High School football program and longtime head coach John Meagher. The Eagles have turned into a factory

for developing college athletes in recent years. In 2012, three Federal Way players from Federal Way signed scholarships.

Keenan Curran

The Eagle defensive back was all set to play at San Jose State, before taking a visit to the Colorado Springs campus of the Air Force Academy. Curran had earlier given a verbal commitment to San Jose State. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound safety led the entire South Puget Sound League in interceptions with six. Curran was recently named to the Associated Press’ 2013 Washington All-State first-team as a defensive back after leading the Eagles to the state semifinals for the first time since 1976. Willis didn’t play for Federal Way as a junior last spring to concentrate on playing for the Sounder FC Academy team. But Willis was a star for the Eagles as a freshman and sophomore. As a sophomore, Willis finished with an astounding 11 shutouts during the

season. Willis also scored a pair of goals for Federal Way during a 12-0 blowout of Bethel. Willis and the Eagle defense allowed only nine goals during the entire season. As a freshman, Willis was a first-team, All-SPSL South Division selection by the league’s coaches. He helped the young and inexperienced Eagles advance into the West Central District Tournament. The two SPSL South championships by the Titans are going to set up huge games for the SPSL title. The Beamer girls will have a rematch with the Mount Rainier Rams (15-0 SPSL North) for the league championship at 8 p.m. inside the Kent ShoWare Center Tuesday night. Beamer downed the Rams earlier this season in a non-league contest, 64-59. Mount Rainier beat the Titans three times during the 2012-13 season, including in the SPSL and West Central District title games. Two weeks later, the men’s short track team would earn a medal in the 5,000-meter relay – J.R.’s second medal. J.R. was a proud member of the record-breaking 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic team that earned 37 total medals, breaking the previous record of 36. He was personally part of two of those 37 total medals. His amazing performance in the Olympics answered our second concern. We called our 17-day trip to Vancouver “our experience of a lifetime.” The city, its people, the hospitality, were all amazing. If it were up to us, Vancouver would host every Winter Olympics! Moving on to Sochi, a huge contrast between Vancouver and Sochi starts with the Olympic Trials. In the September 2009 Olympic short track trials for Vancouver, we had about 20 or so of J.R.’s supporters present in Marquette, Mich. In the January 2014 trials in Salt Lake City, there were at least 60 family members and close friends present. However, the tides turn in the Olympics. While

and friends showed up in Vancouver to watch J.R. compete or to be with us, there will be only seven in Sochi. J.R.’s experience going to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is different. J.R. is healthy, he is ready. He has competed against the best in the world several times in the past six months. Unlike in Vancouver, he is more hardened, more experienced, more focused. He’s now a 23-yearold team leader; in Vancouver he was a 19-year-old Olympic rookie. Our experience in Sochi will be much different than Vancouver. First, location. In 2010, we drove to Vancouver about three hours up I-5 in the same time zone. For Sochi, we will fly about 24 hours to a place that is 12 time zones away – exactly half way around the world. Vancouver: English. Sochi: Russian. Vancouver – a single ticket to get into an event. Sochi – three layers of security to get through the security labyrinth and into an event: a park pass, a spectator pass and a ticket. Oh yes, a Russian visa in addition to the passport just to enter the country. It goes further. In Vancouver, we stayed with friends. In Sochi, we paid for a hotel long ago that we

www.federalwaymirror.com didn’t even know would be built! Vancouver: a friendly, large, world-class city that was open and largely free of security concerns or serious threats. Sochi: a small unknown town in a very unstable region of the world with tension, controversy, serious security threats, computer hacking fears and far less infrastructure. So, while going into Vancouver we were only concerned about those two things discussed above, Sochi is filled with uncertainty. Despite this, our mantra throughout this whole process so far is this: We believe! We believe that everything will normalize and that it will be a great trip, well worth taking to the other side of the world so we can watch our son do what he’s done since he turned 3 years old! And we can’t wait to get started on this journey Saturday morning. We have already labeled this trip “our adventure of a lifetime.” Some side notes and fun fact contrasts to finish this first week’s edition. J.R. has always been a huge Seahawks fan. Volunteers reach out to help the homeless with shelter, services By Carrie Rodriguez editor@fedwaymirror.com

omen feel so safe and comfortable at the Church of the Good Shepherd’s homeless shelter that one woman wears her pajamas while she eats at the dinner table. “It’s so fulfilling to sit and chat with them while they eat,” said Mary Ann Traynor, who volunteers for the Reach Out program. “There’s a sense of home here.” This is the first year the Episcopal church in Federal Way is hosting the women’s winter shelter, but it’s the third winter season that the shelter has operated, rotating from different churches that are part of Reach Out. The organization has also operated a men’s winter shelter for six years, this winter at Calvary Lutheran in Federal Way. With the temperatures significantly dropping this week and in light of the recent annual One Night Count, when volunteers counted 113 homeless people in Federal Way, Reach Out volunteers hope that people in need will contact the organization for help. So far, the women’s shelter has hosted on average about nine women each night, said Esther Poirier, reverend of the Church of the Good

Shepherd. However, there is room for 15 women. Screening and registration for potential shelter residents is provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at New Hope Christian Fellowship, 31411 Sixth Ave. S., Federal Way. Reach Out is a ministry that partners with 25 Federal Way churches of various faiths, service and civic organizations and community volunteers to provide shelter, daily meals and support services to help homeless men and women in South King County move toward self-sufficiency. The program is operated during the winter months, November through March. Nancy Jaenicke, Reach Out coordinator, was part of the group of concerned residents who helped to get the program running. Eight years ago, volunteers counted the homeless in Federal Way during the annual One Night Count. Seeing people on the streets firsthand, the group of residents, including Jaenicke, spoke during a Federal Way City Council meeting about the need for shelters and other homeless services in the city. “[Council members] Dini Duclos and Jeanne Burbidge came up to me and said, ‘We’ve got to make this

work,” Jaenicke recalled of that Council meeting. The city got involved and formed a steering committee and Reach Out was eventually formed in 2009 through the program Catholic Community Services of King County. Jaenicke said the organization has grown, and Reach Out volunteers are currently working with the Federal Way Community Caregiving Network to try and get an all-day shelter operating in Federal Way. At the Church of the Good Shepherd, women come in to the shelter for dinner, sleep on mats overnight in a room that is used as a preschool during the day, and leave after breakfast with a bagged lunch to take with them that volunteers provide. Organizations and other volunteers sign up to provide meals to residents of the shelter. “I’ve been amazed at how smoothly it’s gone into place,” Poirier said. “People here at this church were wide open to having this happen. She added that shelter residents come from all walks of life, some unemployed and others making a steady paycheck that is not enough to support their basic needs. “There’s such a sense of

She noted how a male client recently brought his dog to Calvary Lutheran and

a volunteer took care of the dog so the man could stay at the shelter. And there are the little comforts volunteers provide that make a big difference to residents. Each woman gets their own tote to keep her belongings in that the church stores for residents so they don’t have to haul their things around all day, said Traynor. People also donate yarn to the church and volunteers make shawls, some of which are given to women in the

homeless shelter. “They can wrap up in a shawl and our prayers go with them,” Poirier said.

Q&A with Mr. FW: Seahawks parade was a history lesson for all Q

: What was it like to watch the Seattle Seahawks win their first-ever Super Bowl title on Sunday? A: To be honest, it really hasn’t even sunk in yet. Mr. Federal Way really doesn’t know when that’s actually going to happen. As you all know, professional sports fans in Seattle don’t have much experience celebrating a world championship. It only happened once back in 1979, when the Seattle SuperSonics won the NBA title. It was such a historic day on Sunday. The Seahawks beating up the Broncos made Mr. Federal Way think about all the long-suffering fans of Seattle. It made Mr. Federal Way think of Mr. Federal Way’s dad, who has been a fan of the Seahawks since their inception in 1976. Mr. Federal Way used to be a season ticket holder back when the Seahawks used to play in the Kingdome. Mr. Federal Way sat in the very last row of the dome. But the memories of watching those games (some good, but mostly bad) are etched in Mr. Federal Way’s mind.

Mr. Federal Way’s excitement of watching the Seahawks live and in person kind of waned when the team moved to Husky Stadium to play their home games. It was awful getting in and out of Husky Stadium, compared to the Kingdome. So, with a little reluctancy, Mr. Federal Way gave up the season tickets. Around that time is also when HD television came around, as well as the price of beer going up at the new stadium. Those two things made Mr. Federal Way very content with watching the Seahawks’ games in Mr. Federal Way’s living room. But that doesn’t mean that Mr. Federal Way is any less of a fan than when Mr. Federal Way had season tickets. In totality, Sunday’s victory was a victory for everybody in the Pacific Northwest. Q: What is your opinion of the Federal Way Public Schools allowing excused absences for students who attended the Super Bowl parade Wednesday in Seattle? I think it’s ridiculous that kids would miss school to watch a football team celebrate violence.

Man invokes ‘God’s will’ in attempted theft CRIME

The report notes the two witnesses chased the suspect as the suspect fled the area on a bicycle. According to the report, the witnesses followed the man but eventually lost sight of him, and police were also unable to locate the suspect. Man invokes God’s will in

Escaped con nabbed: At 4:31 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the 31000 block of Pacific Highway S., police stopped a vehicle after the driver attempted to avoid an intersection by driving through a nearby parking lot. Men fight over toys in backyard: At 4:40 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the 2000 block of S. 299th St., police responded to reports of a fight between two men. Accord-

ing to the report, the two men are neighbors, and the fight stemmed from a disagreement over one man’s children’s toys/balls always being in the other man’s backyard. Police discovered a suicidal woman inside. According to the report, the woman attempted to overdose on muscle relaxers and pain killers. The report notes that South King Fire and Rescue were called to treat the woman, and that she was transported to a nearby hospital for involuntary committal. Man arrested after throwing rock, scuffling with police: At 8:49 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the 33000 block of Pacific Highway S., police responded to reports of a possible overdose. Medical personnel on scene checked the man out and

declined to transport him to a hospital. At that time, the man became agitated and threw a rock at the responding officers. The officers went to arrest the man for throwing the rock and he resisted and continued to assault officers. Man tries to reclaim RV from ex-girlfriend: At 11:37 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the 3500 block of SW 339th Place, a man went to his ex-girlfriend’s residence and attempted to reclaim an RV from the property. According to the report, the man was able to gain entry to the RV, but could not drive it off the property because the woman parked a car in front of the RV. At that point, the man became angry with the woman and yelled at her before leaving the area. Man robbed: At 1:51 a.m. on Feb. 1 in the 27000 block of Pacific Highway S., a man reported that two men known to him assaulted him and stole the hat and coat he was wearing.

Washington residents now have a new online map to check and see if their neighborhood has a geological risk for the cancer-causing gas radon using a new state app. The new app is offered by the state Department of Health’s Washington Tracking Network. Some areas of the state, such as Spokane and Clark counties, are well-known for having higher levels of radon, but the new online map shows that there are some areas around the Puget Sound, such as Pierce and King counties that might

REQUIREMENTS City of Federal Way is creating its directory of Section 3 and Minority and Women Businesses. The directory is provided to recipients, contractor, and subcontractors of its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME programs, and other federal funding administered by the City of Federal Way Department of Community and Economic Development Department. SECTION 3 The recipients of HUD Community Development assistance are required to provide employment opportunity to low- and very low-income local residents, businesses that are either owned by them, or that employ these persons in projects supported with HUD funding. As a recipient of annual CDBG and other federal grant awards in excess of $200,000, Section 3 applies to all projects funded with said resources, as well as contractors and subcontractors implementing the projects. But please don’t hold our students hostage for the frustrations you have with adults. They can’t afford a step back in this critical time of their lives.

Why I voted yes on the levy I received my voter’s ballot in the mail Saturday and will be dropping it off at the ballot box with a clear “yes” for schools today. A “yes” for schools usually isn’t a very difficult vote for me. However, this year I found myself initially mixing in factors unrelated to the school levy use in my thinking about

the vote. My substantial disappointment at the poor choices that those in school governance roles have demonstrated over the past 18 months still stains my opinion of their service. That is, I don’t think either the school board or most senior leadership in the district have behaved admirably – not even close. Then I remembered that a vote for the levy is not a vote of support for them. It’s a vote of support for my community schools and those in the classrooms teaching our students. And, it isn’t even a very subtle difference. I voted against the incumbent running for school board last fall, and against a retiring school board member’s recommended candidate because of the board’s behavior last year. Those angry anti-votes were well earned by the board. And, those anti-votes only immediately impact the individuals who made the poor choices, not our students or teachers. The funny thing is, I don’t remember any of the school board members or the superintendent from my own time as a student. They really weren’t particularly meaningful to my learning; they still aren’t. But I’m still angry with our board. However, I am not at all angry with those who are in the classroom with our students every day, the classroom teachers and school leaders. These are the folks who are most impacted by my vote. As partners with parents and the community, they inspire, encourage, lead and guide students to growth and knowledge. They do this irrespective of either the board’s extraordinary governance or poor behavior. I remember numerous classroom educators who helped contribute to frame my life: teachers like Mr. Epp, Ms. Abernathy, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Ziegan, and Mr. Utgaard. And we still have a tremendous number of incredible classroom and school leaders, teachers and principals much like those of my own youth. Individuals like Mr. Howard, Mrs. Storms, Mr. Brower, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Moser, Mrs. Ellis, these are just a few of many who easily come to mind. These are the people who will be positively impacted by my “yes” vote. So, my “yes” vote for the levy isn’t for the board; it is a specific vote in support of each of our many quality classroom teachers and for every one of their students.

Reason to vote for levy sounds like blackmail Having read Angela Worcester’s piece, “Four reasons to renew levy,” I am enraged by one of her reasons. Ms. Worcester says that if we don’t, they will most likely come back with a second attempt in the spring that will cost “upwards of $200,000.” Is this really a valid reason to vote for something you don’t believe in? Sounds like a threat or perhaps blackmail. Furthermore, she does not address the concerns mentioned in the exact same space a week ago. Mr. Jarvis brought to the forefront some valid concerns. The one that resonated most with me is rewarding a superintendent, who has brought about no substantial improvements in test scores, yet is rewarded with an outrageous raise. I am still sitting on the fence on the levy issue and Ms. Worcester has done very little to persuade me to vote yes. Perhaps quite the opposite.

Working together, despite levy outcome I have heard concerns that the upcoming school district levy election is dividing our community. Vote “yes” because you support the teachers and students, despite the concerns you have regarding the school board leadership. Or vote “no” because you can’t stand the thought of giving more money to a district that prioritizes raises and trips to Europe and Asia over textbooks, teachers and students. People are understandably passionate about this. It directly impacts our children, our community and our wallets. I have been somewhat outspoken on the topic and, consequently, I have attracted people who are similarly outspoken – both “for” and “against” the levy. Although this is certainly not a scientific sampling of the voting citizens, the one thing that unites us is that we want what is best for students. We just disagree on tactics. It is critical to keep this in mind because no matter the outcome of the election, our work as concerned parents and citizens has only begun and we will need to work together. here is talent and then there is genius: Shakespeare, Leonardo, Isaac Newtown, Einstein … and Cole Porter? It’s not so long ago that popular music was perceived as the candy floss of the musical world. But as the 21st century matures, so we are developing a richer understanding of the creative genius of some of the iconic American greats. “Cole Porter’s lyrics are up there with Shakespeare’s sonnets and other great poetic literature,” says Purple Phoenix Productions artistic director David Duvall, “because they manage to capture the depth and the complexity of the human romantic experience. Due to the way in which he lived his life, he understood ‘love’ was rarely easy, usually multi-dimensional and not to be treated lightly. He had to balance those he loved, and how he loved them, all the time … which is, I think, why he never wrote a simple ‘I love you’ song, which were so common in his day - he knew that relationships were never simple.”

I think there have been many great songwriters who are able to capture humanity with their work – Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Lennon and McCartney, just to name a few. But no one has ever been able to capture the joys and complexities of love the way Porter did. This is why

so many vocalists have sung his songs over the years, and why they will continue to be sung.” Duvall is particularly thrilled to be presenting this concert – his 10th Porter tribute – with what he calls his “dream cast” for a Porter show. “When doing a new Porter tribute was proposed, there were four people I wanted to have sing the songs – and when all the stars aligned and we were able to get all

of them, I knew this would be a very special evening,” he said. Laurie Clothier, Connie Corrick, Hugh Hastings and Eric Polani Jensen are all now well-known frequent actors at The 5th Avenue Theatre, The Village Theatre, Seattle Childrens’ Theatre and numerous cabarets in Seattle and beyond. But they all have a long personal and professional history with Duvall, back to their early days as Seattle entertainers

or beyond. Clothier first joined Duvall in a Porter revue in Bellingham in 1979. Hastings and Corrick did their first Cole Porter revue with Duvall in a Pioneer Square nightclub in the early 1980’s – just before they married, and Duvall put together a Porter show for them when they were performing on cruise ships. “Eric is the only vocalist in this show I haven’t performed a full Porter concert with to date – but we’ve performed many Porter songs in nightclubs over the years,” Duvall said. “It is a wonderful blessing for me to be building this show for life-long friends who know how to speak ‘Cole Porter.’” Duvall learned his appreciation of Porter early in life. “I grew up listening to a lot of Porter music because my father enjoyed his writing and would play jazz recordings of the songs while we had dinner – really our only family time together. Dad loved that kind of humor. I often joke that the first language I learned was innuendo. But dad was also a band director who understood a well-constructed song, and our dinner

conversations would often be about how a Cole Porter song differed from a Gershwin tune. An odd childhood, I realize, but it prepared me for what I do now.” Now known for his brilliant orchestrations (“True Love” features the talented Purple Phoenix Orchestra) and his catalog of revues celebrating American musical icons, it is not surprising that Duvall’s first revue, while still a senior in high school, was a salute to the songs of Porter. The lexicon of Porter shows and songs is vast. “Anything Goes,” “I Get A Kick Out of You,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy,” “What Is This Thing Called Love?” … the list goes on and on. be slow and arduous. We have been successful with change, but it took three years to win a partial victory on the grading system. It appears that it will be in limbo for some time as a 40-person team meets once a month for the next two years, while the elementary students are still victims of the power curve. With the exception of student achievement, the district goals (end states) as defined by the school board are nebulous. Year-to-year progress, cost, or any other method of measurement is nearly impossible to apply. With regard to student achievement, despite Superintendent Rob Neu’s celebration of a 2.6 percent increase in graduation rates from 2012 to 2013, the 10-year trend for the school district (as reported by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) is still declining. If the levy fails, expect change at a more frantic pace, assuming the board recognizes the failure to be a direct reflection on their performance. Trust and accountability will need to be restored to ensure that it will pass at its next opportunity in April. I would recommend that the board get ahead of this, starting with a comprehensive vision, mission, quantifiable goals and measures. Transparency is key to trust, so a communication plan will be necessary to track progress and corrective action. Despite our differences on how to bring change to the school district, as a community we are united. Our children are our No. 1 priority.

Failing levy will hurt students

recent statements in this newspaper by several opponents of the Federal Way school levy. This disappointment does not stem from the existence of opposition, but by the opposition’s refusal to provide real facts, defensible logic, or to recognize the real-world consequences to our students. Worse yet is the opposition’s willingness to make fantastical demands for which they would hold the $53 million hostage, coupled with the suggestion that they will then shoulder no responsibility for the damage caused to our students, teachers and schools. In total, the opposition is behaving like a toddler throwing a tantrum – except that this toddler’s tantrum will lead to teacher and staff layoffs, larger class sizes and program cuts. I understand that the opponents are mad – furious – about school board travel, about superintendent pay, about the grading policy and about academic results. And the evidence is that recent civic engagement addressing these issues has worked, resulting in awareness, impact and change. I am unaware of any new travel controversies. I am unaware of any new pay increases for the superintendent. I understand that action has been and is still on the table with respect to the grading policy. The last election led to a 40 percent change in the makeup of the school board. We replaced a mayor and have new members on the city council. The truth is that democracy – slow and imperfect, sometimes ugly and full of compromise – worked in Federal Way.
