The ManeStage Theatre Company opened in 2008 and for the second time it is performing Snow White. Kayli Higgins, who played Snow White the last time, is reprising her role. Higgins has been acting for about five years now, she said. She has acted in 27 shows and 26 of those have been with ManeStage, she added. She said the first time she performed as Snow White, she was young and didn’t really understand the lines. Now there is “more acting behind it,” Higgins said. “Because I’ve done it before, there is no excuse not to know what to do,” she said. “I am more focused than last time.” For Higgins, acting has been more of a hobby, she said. But she is hoping to pursue it more and make it a career. She said ManeStage is a place where you can go to “feel normal,” Higgins said. And to Bryce Smith, ManeStage is like a second family, he said.

Sumner Police Department is investigating the vandalism of more than 80 headstones at the historic cemetery located on Valley Avenue, according to Communications Director Carmen Palmer. The incident occurred sometime Thursday night or early Friday morning, though an exact time frame has not been released. Cemetery staff immediately began work to restore the damaged headstones. Reports indicate that some were knocked over, while others were transferred to different spots within the cemetery. The city’s public works and parks departments have assisted in restoration efforts, in order to make a larger impact in a shorter amount of time. A similar incident occurred in 2005, in which the perpetrators were sentenced to community service. “I understand that this is an ongoing challenge with any cemetery, but it’s truly disheartening to think that anyone could do this to the memory of so many people and to their fami-

Bonney Lake seniors Spartans finish season with win over White River commit to Bellevue College Staff Writer

The Sumner Spartans wrestled in its last regular season match against White River on Thursday, Jan. 30. The Spartans beat the Hornets 43-30. During senior night at Sumner High School, four seniors ended the night with wins over White River. Senior Travis Filleau at 132 pinned Garrett Ryan in 2:15 minutes. Senior Jed Schliesman at 170 pinned Garret Severson in 1:16. Senior Justin Myers at 220 defeated Austin Ross 4-0. And senior Zach Summers at 195 pinned Erik Ball in 1:55 minutes. Panthers and Spartans to compete in districts Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

In the last regular season met the Bonney Lake and Sumner gymnastics teams competed against the Enumclaw Hornets and the Tahoma Bears on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Panthers finished second with a team score of 150.8 and the Spartans came in third with a score of 132.95. Hailey Taylor from Bonney Lake placed third on beam with a score of 9.05. And Kiley McCain from Sumner placed third on bars with a score of 8.05. The Panthers and Spartans will compete next in the district qualifying meet on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Mount Rainier High School.

Smith who played the Prince in the first performance of Snow White is taking on a different role this time around. Smith is playing the Magic Mirror. He has been acting for eight years and started with ManeStage when they opened six years ago. “It is awesome to see the company grow,” he said. Smith said it is “awesome” doing the show again because he knows it really well. This time though, he is seeing it from a different point of view. The magic mirror hangs from the ceiling and Smith is back stage being projected onto a TV screen that is the mirror.

She was not in the first production of Snow White but she has watched a video of one of the performances. “It is nice to see the dif-

ferences,” Stout said. “It makes you proud, seeing the growth.” Stout plays the Evil Queen pre-hag, another actress plays the Queen when she transforms herself into the hag who gives Snow White the poisoned apple. “With duel roles, you work more together,” Stout said. “We try to keep the same nastiness of the Queen.” Similar to Higgins and

Smith, Stout feels most comfortable and most at home at ManeStage. Stout said she thinks it would be interesting to try acting professionally if there was a show out there that she really wanted to do but for the time being, she plans on staying with ManeStage. Not all those who act at ManeStage are local to Sumner, Smith said you get a good mix of people from all over the greater Seattle

area. The performance of Snow White varies a little from the Disney version. The main differences are that Snow White and the Prince have been friends since they were younger, the dwarfs have different names and act differently than their movie counter parts. ManeStage has performed more than 40 shows since they opened and with each show the number of

patrons increases. “It is nice to see audiences get bigger and bigger each show,” Higgins said. Snow White opened Saturday, Feb. 1 and has six more shows running until Sunday, Feb. 16. The next show is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. Performances take place at the Sumner Performing Arts Center. Tickets start at $11 and can be purchased online, at the door or over the phone.

Eluding Police: Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving. The vehicle eventually stopped in front of a residence and the driver f led on foot. Officers conducted a search of the area assisted by a Pierce County Sheriff K-9 unit. The suspect was found at his home and was detained without incident.

The female subject was arrested for an existing warrant and the male subject was issued a citation for theft in the third degree, before being released at the scene. Driving Under the Influence: At about 11:50 p.m., a vehicle was pulled over for “fishtailing” and speeding. Upon contact, the driver was found to be under the influence and was arrested for DUI. The vehicle was towed and the passenger was provided courtesy transport to her home.

Patrol:

Shortly after 1 a.m, a Bonney Lake officer participating in the Pierce County DUI emphasis patrol assisted a possible DUI stop in Orting. The driver was stopped for improper lane travel and performed poorly on Standard Field Sobriety Tests. He was arrested for DUI and his vehicle was towed.

Assault: Of f icers responded to the report of an assault in progress. The subject intitially attempted to flee but returned as an officer began following in his vehicle. The reporting person said the subject demanded a ride and when he wouldn’t provide one, the subject began to physically assault him. The subject then jumped onto a vehicle, smashed in a window and proceeded to contact the reporting person’s neighbor, at which point 911 was called. The neighbor attempted to diffuse the situation but was slapped on the back of the head by the subject. During investigation, the subject was detained in an officer’s patrol vehicle and acting erratically. He was transported to an area hospital, where an extensive evaluation was performed. At the time of report, it was unknown if the subject was to be released, but if so, would be charged with two counts of assault, one count of burglary, and one count of vandalism.

An officer responded to 181st Avenue East for the report of an antique item stolen from the home’s front yard. No suspect information was available, but the reporting person believes it two people were pretending to work for a tree company and had been canvassing the area.

ed to the report of a mother and daughter that were arguing over the daughter’s refusal to attend school. The argument continued to escalate, with intermittent shoving matches, until the police were called to intervene. Both subjects appeared to be at equal fault. Officers spoke to the duo and explained the inappropriateness of their behavior and no charges were filed.

Wilson, Manning show their age The Seahawks’ Super Bowl win Sunday spurred a few thoughts in my mass of cobwebs. One was that I remember every Super Bowl, from Super Bowl I to Super Bowl XLVIII. That darn time keeps moving, in Roman numerals. I watched the first one with my dad when Vince L omb a rd i ’s Green Bay Packers steamrol led t he Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10. Sunday, I Dennis Box watched the Editor S e a h aw k s steamroll the Denver Broncos with my son. It was a good day. It was fitting that Broadway Joe Namath flipped the coin at the opening of the game. I remember Namath beating the Colts and how torn I was to see a young, curly-haired quarterback take apart a team quarterbacked by Earl Morrall with Johnny Unitas on the bench due to an injury. As a kid I was a big Johnny U fan, but I knew the Jets’ coach Weeb Eubank had the Colts and coach Don Shula figured out. Eubank had one other ace – youth. A young Namath with a gun for an arm who was ready to unseat the champion. Namath knew

Does it appear there are squatters that have moved into a foreclosed house in your neighborhood? Do you have a party house down the street that concerns you? Are their rats digging through the mounting pile of trash at the house you pass by daily? Does the neighbor’s rooster wake you in the morning before the alarm clock? Is that shed the neighbor built up to code? Is that home business allowed in your neighborhood? What can you do? It depends which part of the Bonney Lake plateau you live in. technical assistance to property owners and organizes communitybased solutions for code enforcement. Serving the county since 2002, it is a partnership of the Pierce County Planning and Land Services Depar t ment, Pierce County Sheriff, Pierce Count y Prosecuting Attorney and TacomaPierce County Health Department. Their most common complaints are: • Occupied RVs • Junk vehicles • Illegal businesses • Building without permits • Accumulation of trash on private property • Illegal dumping in the county right of way They only accept reports of code violations in unincorporated Pierce County. A visit to their website will provide links for your research, such as who owns the property to land use regulations. Like the city website, they suggest you do your homework before submitting a complaint, or make sure you are in compliance. The county offers the Community Assistance and Public Education (CAPE) program, which was created to assist communities with neighborhood cleanups. Litter credits and junk vehicle affidavits can help clean up properties. Community members take responsibility for the cleanup and Pierce County Responds staff coordinates the assistance. A litter credit waives landfill disposal fees up to $125 for community cleanups and victims of illegal dumping. You must meet certain criteria to be eligible. Pierce County Responds has many resources available for county residents who want to get rid of or report public nuisance vehicles including removal of non-junk vehicles, towing costs, replacing lost vehicle titles, and junk vehicle affidavits. Whether you are in

the city or county, if you believe there is criminal activity, call 911. So how should you approach this after you have done your research, contacted the property owner, got no resolution, and have contacted coded enforcement or law enforcement? How far are you willing to go to improve the safety of your neighborhood as well as your property values? During the recent Great Recession, many homes stood empty due to foreclosure. These usually cease to have the lawn mowed and sometimes become an attractive nuisance to vandals or squatters. If the squatters move into the house, banks are required by law to consider the squatters as “residents” and subject to “tenant” rights. They basically have to be evicted. If the squatters are gone, the banks are much more responsive toward the cleanup and securing the property. So what did one local homeowners association (HOA) do? They empowered their community by resorting to some rather simple, brave, and uncommon tactics to remove the squatters that was a real benefit to the bank who owned the foreclosed home. They circled the house after dark when the nightly party was really getting started. They aimed their cars at the house from the street, without going on the property, and simply turned on their high beam headlights. HOA members were encouraged to stop by any time during the night and shine their headlights or flash lights or f lood light on what should be a vacant house, not a party house with broken windows and garbage stacking up. This tactic was used a couple of nights in a row. The second night there was far fewer partiers in the foreclosed home. In fact, they began moving out, and told the HOA through the Pierce County Sheriff they would be out by noon tomorrow. Basically they were gone in three days. The HOA also began

taking pictures of cars in the driveway during daylight hours, and the people coming and going began to dwindle. The light show started the first night and more began going, rather than coming to the house. It was the turning point. There was a strong Pierce County Sheriff response in this situation. They were aware of the activity in the home and of the HOA concerns due to meetings

with the HOA. They also were familiar with the squatters. Department staff spoke to the HOA and encouraged them to continue keeping their neighborhood safe. Some arrests were made during the exodus the first night of the headlight brigade. In three days the squatters were gone and the HOA took it upon themselves to secure the house and board up the windows. They are working with Pierce County

Responds and the bank for cleanup of the garbage left behind. It is supposed to be done in the next week or so as of the time this column was submitted. This HOA has another home with a similar situation they will be working on in their community. They are empowered. They have resolved to stay the course and be aggressive, no more passive moments. They decided talking and wait-

ing would not get change. Changing how they reacted to the squatters made them change the squatters behavior. There was no retaliation. The lesson the HOA took away from this was if we all stand together, and support each other and have a large presence, retaliation was avoided. Their message: Stand up and support your neighbors, they are making change for the many.

‘Family caregiving’ workshops available to public Pierce County Aging and Disabilities Resource Center The vast majority of health care provided in the United States – 89 percent of it – happens at home. Nearly one in three households is involved in family caregiving, either directly or indirectly. But for most caregivers, there

is little training to meet the challenges that come along with being a family caregiver. “The Secrets of Family Caregiving” is a 90-minute exploration of successfully meeting the varied needs that come along with that role. Topics will include creating a safe environment, maintaining medical records and providing medical care, communicating with healthcare profession-

als, community services and resources, respite opportunities, balancing caregiving with other life needs and self-care for the caregiver. Presenters include case managers from Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources and other community professionals. Easy-to-grow orchids no longer just for the rich growing orchids? Joe: They water too much and put the plants in a sunny window. Orchids like filtered sunlight and they grow on the trunks of trees in the wild. They need perfect drainage and little water. MB: So do you recommend the ice cube trick? Placing two ice cubes on top of the orchid’s roots every Sunday? Joe: If portioning out the water supply by using ice cubes instead of a watering can works for you then use it. Orchids do like cooler night temps especially to get them to rebloom, but the tropical orchids we sell and display have never met an ice cube in their natural habitat. I just set my potted orchids in the sink once a

week, water, let them drain in the sink then place the plants back near filtered sunlight. I’ll give them more water in the summer or if they are really growing fast. Don’t let your orchid’s roots sit in drainage water. MB: What type of fertilizer do you use? Joe: Mostly anything I can get my hands on but I dilute every fertilizer because you can harm an orchid plant by feeding it too much. I put one-eighth or one-fourth of a teaspoon of liquid plant food into a gallon watering can to fertilize. MB. So growing orchids is your full-time job? Joe: Yes, I love it. I also speak to garden clubs and other groups about orchid growing and encour-

age people to join the Northwest Orchid Society. The society members are the great group of volunteers who supply the rainbow of orchids for our display at the show. Of course, I have my retail shop in Georgetown and also supply flower shops and other retailers with cut orchids and orchid plants. Aerospace is critical to our state’s economy We faced our greatest challenge in decades last fall when Boeing announced their intent to move their production line of the next generation of commercial aircraft out of Washington state. This would have initiated a competitive bidding process between many states. The Governor called a special session of the Legislature last November and we passed legislation to help keep Boeing here in Washington. Rep. Hurst during House committee meeting.

The state operating budget The good news is that the state’s economy is growing. Our economic recovery is finally underway. State and local unemployment rates are dropping and, as consumers increase spending, tax collections are improving. There is reason for optimism. Consumer spending is proof that folks are feeling more confident about the future.

Engineering and aerospace machinist positions provide the livelihood for many of our friends and neighbors. For every job at Boeing, five more jobs are created at companies that contract with the aerospace business. Aerospace revenues in Washington state totaled $51.2 billion in 2012. Securing production of the

Our local economy As we continue to recover from the Great Recession, it’s important we recognize our personal responsibility to help improve our local economy by buying locally or American-made products. We can return manufacturing jobs home to America that were lost to China by buying products that are made here. Last year, we were contacted by Chris Lyons, an owner of the new Carbon Glacier Distillery in Wilkeson. Chris was seeking solutions that would make his local business more competitive with larger out-of-state and foreign companies that ship products here. We introduced House Bill 1149 to address his concern and help keep small businesses like his in our communities. We have also led efforts in the Legislature to reform our unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation programs to keep large rate increases from taking place during tough economic times. Without these changes we would have lost many jobs at a time we could least afford it.

In a bipartisan effort, we funded an additional $1 billion for K-12 education last year. We bolstered higher education to allow for a tuition freeze at our state’s institutions for the first time in nearly 30 years, and funded support programs and services for our most vulnerable. The current budget projections are positive and we will not need to make major changes in this year’s supplemental budget. We are confident we can conclude our business on time.

777X will ensure tens of thousands of additional aerospace jobs for generations to come. We were also careful to add language in the legislation that will hold Boeing accountable. If they do not live up to their agreements with the state, billions of dollars in tax incentives will go away.

New investments in K-12 education The end product of last year’s session was a major win for students, teachers and parents. The $15.1 billion we spent on K-12 education represents an additional $1 billion investment over the previous budget. We gave educators back the 1.9 and 3 percent pay they sacrificed when dealing with the realities of previous budgets. We also provided funding for fullday kindergarten, class-size reductions, pupil transportation and materials, supplies and operating costs. We put additional resources into the Learning Assistance Program, or LAP, which helps our most vulnerable students, among other investments that make a difference in our classrooms.

Bonney Lake resident Shelly Renee Eid died Jan. 27, 2014, at the age of 59. She was born June 2, 1954, in Dickinson, N.D., to Alvina and Larry Harrington. She looked forward to working with young kids at Pony Trails Preschool and enjoyed camping, riding ATVs, horseback riding and spending time with family, especially her four grandchildren. She was active in the Meridian Riding Club and in 4-H with one of her granddaughters. She is survived by her

The Bonney Lake Police Department announced their February traffic emphasis will include a zerotolerance focus on unlicensed and uninsured drivers. Driving without proof of insurance or a valid license are both traffic infractions with fines of $550 each. Driving with a revoked or suspended license is considered a misdemeanor, punishable by up to $1000 and 90 days in jail. The traffic emphasis is intended to reduce collisions caused by uninsured and unlicensed drivers.

MESSAGE FROM JANEL Are The Kids Learning and How Do We Know?

The staff in the district is committed to high levels of learning for all students for success beyond high school. To achieve this difficult, but vitally important purpose we work hard to make sure we are clear about what students must know in every subject, grade, and course. We also recognize that simply being clear about what students should know is never enough. Across the district we focus like a laser beam on the question, “Are the kids learning, and how do we know?” And, we seek to answer this question student by student, skill by skill. Focusing on this question has developed a results-oriented culture across the district, at every level. It begins in the classroom with individual teachers using quick checks for understanding throughout the lesson in order to see if students are “getting it.” At the team level, our teacher teams develop common formative assessments in order to monitor the learning of each student, skill by skill, on a timely basis. Learning attainment at the building level is monitored by our periodic district-wide benchmark assessments. Last week across the district our teachers analyzed and compared reading and math data from the September benchmark assessments to the January scores. Targets for each for each grade level show where kids should be with oral reading fluency, reading comprehension and math. Principals and teacher teams intentionally take time to map the growth between the fall, winter, and spring reading benchmarks. That gives teams a visual model answering the question - Are you/teacher and team adding value to each student? Each team identified students who were not making progress and developed specific plans for them. Progress is monitored monthly. All of this work helps us make decisions about which students need additional time, support and enrichment. We also use the results of our assessments to reflect on the effectiveness of our instructional practices and adopted resources. In short, everyone in the White River School District—board of directors, staff, and administrators—work extremely hard to help more students learn more. Ensuring high levels of learning for all students is a difficult, complex, and incremental journey. But, it’s a critical journey that is certainly worthwhile. After all, these are our kids!

Graph shows clear growth from fall to winter for all first graders in White River in the area of reading fluency. There is a much larger number of students in the “established” range for this essential skill, and far fewer students in the “deficient” range. 974468

RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION White River’s Director of Assessment and Curriculum, Mr. Mike Jacobsen, has been invited to participate in a Response to Intervention (RTI) Secondary Summit in Washington, D.C. later this month. This is an honor for him and for White River. Other invitees include university researchers, authors, State education department staff and others involved in the national efforts to develop effective ways to help struggling students. The Summit is organized by the National Center on Intensive Intervention.

TURN UP THE POSITIVE During the week of February 18-21, the White River High School leadership class will be hosting a “Positivity Drive.” The mission of this event is to emphasize an uplifting and positive environment for students and staff members, reflecting the theme for the year – “Turn up the Positive!” The A.S.B executive council annually meets during a summer to select a theme. Senior student Andrea Entz generated the initial idea and the group developed the concept. The “Positivity Drive” will consist of four music-themed spirit days, decorations around school, student-led activities, and several lunch activities that are led by clubs within the school. Their goals include distribution of at least 2,000 Hornet-Grams written by students and teachers, expressing appreciation of one another in a positive way. They are an uplifting way to show students that people care about them. The week ends with a pep assembly for all students. White River High School hopes to “turn our positive up to 11!”

These FFA members competed at the 2013 Washington State FFA Convention in Pullman The White River FFA Chapter will celebrate National FFA Week February 11th- 14th. There are many chapter activities planned including a breakfast, laser tag, bowling with Enumclaw FFA, and a BBQ. As the face of agriculture has changed, so has the White River FFA Chapter. The chapter was once known for its abundance of animal projects and log show teams. Nowadays, they take pride in producing tomorrow’s leaders with skills they need to be successful in the job market. Raising animals and learning about the ever changing field of agriculture and natural resources are vital to the program and provide opportunities for some members. But today’s students in FFA also participate in numerous Career Development Events (CDE) that focus on polishing leadership skills important in today’s society. They also raise market animals for the Northwest Junior Livestock show, give back to the Buckley area through community service, and participate in numerous recreational activities. In recent years, White River has competed successfully in large number of events at the state level, had representation on the Washington State FFA Officer Team, and members compete at the National FFA Convention. Please join us in celebrating today’s youth, tomorrow’s leaders, and our agriculture industry.

Our Transportation Department employees not only diligently drive our students to and from school on a daily basis, they have also adopted a section of Highway 410 between the White River bridge and Mundy Loss Road for litter clean up! Four times per year, they don safety vests and gloves and do their part to keep our town looking its best. You’ll find similar groups showing civic pride in other areas of the school district too. The Foothills Elementary PTA has adopted their section of 234th Avenue. White River High School PTSA is organizing a campus beautification effort on February 22nd. Participants are welcome to bring their own gardening gloves and weeding tools beginning at 9am.

SCHOOL BOARD CORNER STUDY AND SURVEY White River School District has undergone a comprehensive review of our school facilities called a Study and Survey. This is an extensive and thorough analysis of each of our school buildings, athletic facilities, and playgrounds, right down to the the furnaces, roofs, insulation, kitchens and offices and so on. The results of the study will guide our administrators and school board in prioritizing the work to be accomplished in coming years as we improve our facilities. Our goals include seeing that our schools match the needs of student learning and staff training, and support evolving technology. SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE All around us people are wearing our Seahawk colors of blue and green. Jerseys, jackets, hats, scarves, jewelry, and even socks and shoes signify commitment to the home team. When I look around, there’s no doubt about it, I’m definitely in the heart of Seahawk country. I struggle a bit because I’m one of those odd people who can barely distinguish between a first down and a touch-down. The game of football is not my area of expertise, but I understand and can relate with the passion that surrounds us. I know what it means to be the “12th Man” and be swept up in the importance of a win. In my understanding of passion, I can grasp the concept of teams – I get commitment – I get fervency – and I get dedication. I believe in people working together as one machine powered by a singular vision and the dream of a world championship for a meaningful cause. So I understand what football fans are experiencing; over-the-top excitement about the success of our home team – Go Hawks! (I notice people end nearly every sentence with this cheer). I want extreme success and opportunities for our kids and schools so badly, I think I could get in a stadium with hundreds of thousands of other like-minded people, and scream at the top of my lungs for hours. The 12th man phenomenon is powerful.

I have some powerful feelings deep inside that I can get a little crazy about. It’s not a game though – it’s real. My “sport,” my passion is public education. I’ve witnessed the power of a win for a kid, a family, a community. I’ve seen a team work incredibly hard together for a victory over indescribable odds. I’ve watched a family huddle together, arms around each other, crying because they’re so happy their student is holding a hard earned diploma in his hand. They believe that student can take it to the next level, just like a Seahawk, going on to a championship game. That passion and fire a Seahawk fan has in their heart – I’ve experienced it. Deep dedication burns; the emotion of passion is real and profound, and it gets played out on the field of teaching and learning. When our students are experiencing the best education possible in a finely-developed classroom with an incredible, talented teacher committed to excellence, I get enthusiastic. There are many people on the Sumner School District team that have the same fervency I do about the success of our kids. We care so deeply about students’ futures, that we are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their needs are met. This team of educators is devoted to kids reaching a remarkable win – like a Seahawk fan is to the home-team winning the Super Bowl.

Early learning is a top priority in the Sumner School District. As such, the District is excited to offer free fulltime kindergarten programs at all elementary schools for the 2014-15 school year. Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, the District will no longer offer a part-time (red or blue) kindergarten program. Research shows early learning is an integral part of student success. Superintendent, Dr. Sara Johnson notes, “Kindergarten is an opportunity to develop and strengthen foundational skills necessary for success in school and lifelong learning.” Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade. All children enrolling in kindergarten will participate in a screening process held later in the spring. Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information beginning February 18, 2014, or download a packet from the District Web site. Completed registration forms can be returned to any elementary school.

THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS Pack the Gym for Special Olympics – Bonney Lake and Sumner High Schools Thirty-five Special Olympics basketball players will participate in individual skills competition and play a full team game at Pack the Gym nights. Come cheer on the Bonney Lake and Sumner High schools Special Olympics basketball teams and benefit our community! Admission is free; canned food donations to benefit local food banks are encouraged. February 12, 2014 - Sumner High School Gym at 6:30 p.m. February 25, 2014 – Bonney Lake High School Gym at 6:30 p.m.

SUMNER HIGH SCHOOL BENEFIT NIGHT SHS Students to host Benefit Night Talent Show and Dinner Auction

Sumner High School ASB is hosting the 8th annual Benefit Night Talent Show on February 20 and 21, 2014. This event is held annually to benefit a member of our community and is sponsored by Sumner High ASB. The Benefit Night Talent Show features a variety of performances by students and community members, making for a fun evening of entertainment and laughter for the whole community. Sumner High School ASB is also hosting a dinner and silent auction on February 19, 2014, as part of Benefit Night. Tickets for the February 19 Dinner & Silent Auction are $20 and can be purchased at Sumner High School. Admission to the February 20 and 21 Talent Show is $8 per person; tickets available at the door. All proceeds go to the selected beneficiary.

2014 STEM FAIR & ART SHOW District K-12 STEM Fair & Art Show February 22, 2014 (originally noted as February 8 in the District calendar) Sumner Middle School, 1508 Willow Street in Sumner 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Sumner School District has transformed the traditional science fair into a STEM Fair – showcasing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Math activities, technology and engineering projects will be featured along with science fair projects at this annual event, and held in conjunction with the District Art Show. See an explosion of creative talent in this all-district science, technology, engineering, math and art event featuring science and art projects by students of all ages at the STEM Fair!

Science Fair

Science fairs give students the opportunity to model the work of professional research scientists. Students who develop science projects learn or improve their skills in scientific method and experimentation, logical thinking and problem-solving, writing and public speaking, and advanced library research. Students will present projects to science fair judges, with the top projects moving on to regional competition in March.

Technology, Engineering and Math Demos and STEM Hands On: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Camp Invention, Tech presentations, Project Lead the Way (Robotics), Pierce County Skill Center, Daffodil Valley Elementary STEM projects and demos. This year there will be a hands-on Math Room. Billed as the “Master Chef’s Pantry,” students will work with fractions at cooking stations. Additional art and science activities by: Boeing Geology Club, Chess Tables, Pierce County Environmental Educators, Tacoma Astronomical Society, Cascade Blood Services, and more!

FREE Technology Classes: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Technology classes will be available for the community who may need assistance on a variety of tools and resources in conjunction with the STEM Fair. Some course titles include; Using Microsoft WordBeyond Basics, Using Microsoft Excel - Beyond Basics, Using Google Apps, and Microsoft IT Academy. Block Fest: 10 – 11 a.m. and 12 – 3 p.m.

Hosted by the Sumner School District Early Learning Department BlockFest™ teaches math and science through block play. Play and learn with little blocks, big blocks and very big blocks, square blocks and round blocks, wooden blocks, foam blocks, cardboard blocks … lots and lots of blocks! This building block extravaganza is offered in conjunction with the District STEM Fair and Art Show for children 8 months to eight years.

“Science With Giants” on the Commons Stage: 11 a.m.

Sponsored by the Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation An energetic and fun performance presented by professional toy inventor and nationally recognized educator Rick Hartman. The “Science with Giants” program will focus on forces, motion, energy and systems. Rick brings lots of enthusiasm and laughter for students and parents alike!

District Art Show: 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Art Show Award Ceremony 2:30 p.m.

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL DAY Students in the Sumner School District lost 1 day of instruction due to a weather-related school closure December 20, 2013. The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up in May: May 22 and May 23, 2014. May 22, 2014 is now a SCHOOL DAY for all students in grades K-12.

HIGHLY CAPABLE STUDENTS Highly Capable Nomination Period Sumner School District will be accepting nominations of students in Kindergarten - 11th grade whose educational needs might be best served by the District’s Highly Capable Program. Beginning February 3 through February 28, nomination forms will be available online and at all elementary, middle and high schools. All parents and guardians who are new to the Highly Capable Program and process are invited to attend a Parent Information Night on February 6, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Lakeridge Middle School. This evening provides an overview of the nomination and selection process, discussion of the characteristics of highly capable students, and a description of our Highly Capable Programs.

Hosted by the Sumner School District Fine Arts departments with support from The City of Sumner Arts Commission This 5th Annual Show celebrates the arts in public schools with pieces of student work in various media including watercolor, oil, charcoal, colored pencil, mixed media, and ceramics on exhibit. This year the show will include digital photographs by middle and high school students. Visitors to the show may cast a vote for their favorite work of art for the “People’s Choice Award.” Ben Franklin will have a hands on table available for budding artists to create art.

As part of the STEM Fair, students in kindergarten – grade 12 participated in poster artwork contest, incorporating themes of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Mountain View Middle School seventh grade student Amanda Thompson was selected as this year’s winner, and her original artwork was used to design the 2014 STEM Fair poster. All entries will be on display at the STEM Fair.
