Port of Tacoma releases winter Pacific Gateway magazine Posted online Tues., Jan. 28 Image Courtesy Port of Tacoma The Port of Tacoma has released its winter issue of Pacific Gateway magazine, the twice-yearly publication that highlights Port of Tacoma trade and transportation developments, activities, customers, and the local community. The new issue features Port of Tacoma security officer Marty Kapsh, who has been a member of the security team since 2000 and trains responders locally and internationally on Port of Tacoma security and emergency management; results of a recent simulation piloting a 13,000 TEU vessel through the Blair Waterway; the recent relocation of breakbulk operations to the East Blair One terminal in an effort to provide Port of Tacoma customers with a state-of-the-art facility; and a partnership between the Port of Tacoma and the City of Tacoma to fix Port of Tacoma Road. City Council approves contract for Old Town Dock project Article and Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Design illustrations Courtesy City of Tacoma Tacoma City Council Tuesday awarded a contract to Olympia, Wash.-based Rod McConkey Construction for a project that will bring a variety of new amenities to the area near the recently renovated, 141-year-old Old Town Dock, including two public restrooms, sidewalk and crosswalk improvements, a rain garden, and new landscaping and irrigation. The City set a project budget of approximately $260,000 using bond funds and began to solicit bids in November. A pre-bid meeting was held on Dec. 3. The deadline to submit bids expired on Dec. 17. Ten contractors submitted bids for the project: Nordland Construction NW (Nordland, Wash.) — $262,000; Bershauer Construction, Inc. (Olympia, Wash.) — $237,609; Lincoln Construction, Inc. (Spanaway, Wash.) — $242,905; Westmark Construction

(Tacoma, Wash.) — $336,691; Rod McConkey Construction, LLC (Olympia, Wash.) — $218,777.83; T Miller Construction (Auburn, Wash.) — $303,700; Pease & Sons, Inc. (Tacoma, Wash.) — $254,548; Durels Construction & Management, LLC (Tumwater, Wash.) — $231,355; Jody Miller Construction (Tacoma, Wash.) — $281,000; and Pease Construction (Lakewood, Wash.) — $249,750. According to City staff, the contract with Rod McConkey Construction reflects a base award of $218,777.83, plus applicable sales tax, plus a 20 per cent contingency, for a cumulative amount of $262,533.40, plus applicable sales tax. Tacoma's once-crumbling and shuttered Old Town Dock, located at 2200 Ruston Way, was closed to the public in the summer of 2008 for a variety of safety reasons, including a deteriorating deck and structural deficiencies. The dock re-opened last May following a $2.3 million renovation.

Councilmember Ibsen to return early from military leave Photo Courtesy Anders Ibsen A Tacoma City Councilmember who took a leave of absence last month to undergo year-long military training announced this week he will return to City Hall earlier than expected. In November, Councilmember Anders Ibsen announced he had been selected to become an Officer Candidate in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and would take a leave of absence from his elected post to undergo training beginning in January and lasting throughout the year. Ibsen planned to return to Tacoma and resume the rest of his term on council at the end of his training. Once commissioned as a reservist Second Lieutenant in the Marines, Ibsen planned to continue on as a Tacoma City Councilmember for District 1, while also drilling with his Marine Corps unit one weekend per month. State law IBSEN allows for elected officials to take extended leaves for military service. Tacoma attorney Joseph Lopez was selected out of 15 applicants and appointed by the Tacoma City Council on Dec. 17 to Ibsen's position on council. Councilmember Lopez's term began on Jan. 1 and was expected to end upon Ibsen's return from military service. "Public service has always been very important for me and my family, and I appreciate the opportunity that I had to train as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves," Ibsen announced Tuesday. "Due to medical reasons, I am unable to complete this program. I am grateful for the support that I have had from my constituents, colleagues, friends and family along the way, and I thank interim Councilmember Joe Lopez for his representation of District 1 during this time. I look forward to returning to Tacoma to serve my community on Feb. 11."

Tacoma City Council approves Human Rights Commission appointments Tacoma City Council Tuesday confirmed the appointment and re-appointments of three local residents to serve on the 15-member Tacoma Human Rights Commission. The commission is tasked with studying, investigating, and mediating community issues that may result from prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination. Commission members serve threeyear appointments and include representatives of the general public and the employer, labor, religious, racial, ethnic, handicapped, and women’s groups in the city. The commission meets every third Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Tacoma City Hall. SEPA Public Information Center File Number: SEP2014-40000216021 The lead agency for this proposal has made a preliminary determination that this project does not have a prob-­ able significant adverse impact on the environment. An environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required under RCW 43.21C.030(2)(9c).
