It is close enough to Seattle to enjoy the big city culture, but far enough away to avoid the snarls and stressors of city life. At the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce, we often hear stories of how families came through town to visit a friend or family member—and so fell in love with the community that they decided to make it home.

Poulsbo serves as a crossroads of the Kitsap Peninsula. Businesses in Poulsbo connect resources in the South End of the county to opportunities in the North End and vice versa. We see our friends and neighbors at the bustling farmers’ market; we bump into our colleagues at a coffee shop; and we serve our community together as volunteers—in fact, Greater Poulsbo has a higher rate of volunteerism than many communities. It’s not a surprise. We take pride in our quality of life and collaborate to improve the lives of our youngest to oldest citizens. We have a thriving art community, exceptional restaurants, and a growing micro-brewery industry. We are, truly, diverse. And it all surrounds the charming harbor of Liberty Bay, nestled in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. (Rain shadow means we get less rain.) Clearly, we think this place is pretty special. I’ve traveled every state in this country. I’ve worked in all the big cities, and most of the medium ones. I’ve lived on both coasts and in the middle. But Poulsbo is home.

There is something surprisingly special about this place. It has the charm of a small town, with the smart innovation of much larger cities. Where else might you find a world leader in ophthalmology instruments situated next to rolling pastureland? Or another world leader in safety equipment just up the road from an old-fashioned grocer? Or technology turks having coffee with craftsmen in metal and wood? Or, my personal favorite, Seattle executives who would rather face the 90-minute daily commute than live anywhere else.

We mow our grass nearly year round, and complain when the August temperatures pass 80. We kayak in January, and bike in June. We work hard. We play hard. We live well. Welcome to Poulsbo.

• Be a leader in economic development. In 2013, the Chamber partnered with the City of Poulsbo to seek a grant to begin redeveloping the west side of Poulsbo. What had been a thriving cluster of car dealerships took a big hit in recent years, leaving vacant lots and buildings for sale. By actively articulating a vision for development, and in partnership with the Mayor, we have encouraged existing businesses to expand to Viking Avenue and others to open new, exciting ventures. Within two years, this should be a thriving business district, with little evidence of its quiet years. • Maintain strong support of our existing businesses. In 2013, we revitalized our monthly luncheons, offering speakers and topics which directly benefited our members. The guiding principle is simple: choose speakers that cause each member to decide, “This was worth my time and will help me in my work.” We believe this has been a strong influencer in our remarkable growth—we have increased membership this year

We have rebuilt and strengthened the Chamber’s relationships with the City of Poulsbo, Kitsap County leadership, our fellow tourism and economic development groups in North Kitsap, the downtown business association, and the Poulsbo Marketing Coalition. These collaborations result in achieving goals faster while using fewer resources. For 2014, we are planning even greater strides. • Work to maintain and improve the quality of life. Quality of life is reflected in our relationships, our attitudes, and our actions. Here at the Chamber, we have instilled a new, more positive energy that is reflected in increasing numbers of participating members, more collegial working relationships, and faster results. In the past, only Chamber members could participate in Chamber events; today, all are welcome. And more decide to join. Even the smaller gestures, like a fresh coat of paint, make a differ-

ence. Sometimes, the improvements aren’t universally popular, like the year-end push by the City to reduce the number of A-board signs that had multiplied over the years. The Chamber worked with the City to help businesses better understand the “why” behind the regulation, and hosted an open forum to get answers to shop owners’ questions. What’s ahead for Chamber members? In 2014, we’ll continue our practice of offering programs that help businesses and individuals become more productive and prosperous. In early January, our website will show an updated calendar of what is happening when and where, but in the meantime, mark your calendars: • Monthly luncheons: Second Wednesday from 11:30 to 1:00 at Gateway Fellowship Hall • After Hours mixers: Third Thursday from 5:15 to 7-ish at various member businesses Don’t forget, we have moved! Our new offices are right on Highway 305, much easier to locate for those seeking our Visitors’ Center. Come check us out.

Doing business in North Kitsap

Poulsbo is known to tourists as Little Norway on the Fjord, but to those of us who call Poulsbo home know it as “20 minutes from anywhere.” It’s a great place to work, to live, to play.

WORK

Greater Poulsbo is a deceptively productive economy. The north end of the Kitsap peninsula is far less dependent on military spending and the aeronautics industry, which drive the central and southern portions of the county. Diversity is the common denominator, from the “big dogs” like Gravitech, Watson, Avalara, Trulife, Marine View Beverage, and Twiss Labs to the unique entrepreneurships like Blue Frog Solar, Well Being Health Center, Valley Nursery, Orbea Signs, and Marina Market. We’re best known for our vibrant, waterfront shopping district. But our economic drivers may also be found along the Highway 305 corridor, or in the Marketplace district (known to locals as Olhava), or in the vast Twelve Trees business complex, nestled in the trees along the Hood Canal. “Business is booming in Greater Poulsbo” is not a cliché—it’s a fact. • Prototek Corp. is a typical Poulsbo success story. Here is the company’s own history, as explained on its website: “Prototek Corporation was founded in 1990 by Irv Smith and his son

Based in Poulsbo, this $17-million-company has business activities in all 50 states and 6 US territories. • Trulife, privately held and based in Ireland, creates, develops, manufactures, and markets niche healthcare products, specifically in orthopedics, breast care, prosthetics, and pressure care. It established a US presence in 2005 when it purchased Seattle Systems, previously Seattle Limb—one of the INC. 500 companies, specializing in prosthetic devices. Trulife’s US headquarters is in Poulsbo, where it does about $66 million annually in sales volume. • Watson , formerly Watson Furniture Group, is more than 50

Doing business in North Kitsap years old and a leader in European-style furniture with American functionality. Its sales volume tops $40 million, but the truly unique part of the story is the CEO’s almost quixotic pursuit of zero waste. Recognized by the Washington Association of Business as its 2013 Environmental Innovator in the large business category for continuous improvement in energy efficiency and waste reduction, Watson is technically already a zero waste-to-landfill company, but the team is still looking for ways to divert 95 percent or more of its manufacturing waste to recycling. Oh, and most times these green strategies result in more of the other green, too.

Poulsbo is a community of diversity. More than any other part of the Kitsap Peninsula, you’ll find all ages, races, backgrounds, and interests in its people. In general, the population is a bit older, a bit wealthier, a bit more educated than other parts of Kitsap. Housing prices are a bit higher—but so is the rate of resale. Crime is lower. The weather is…well, like most of the Pacific Northwest. (Though we are in an infamous “rain shadow,” which means the Olympic Mountains protect us from the worst of the wet.) Our places of worship are diverse, too, from strict doctrine to churches that purposely have no building, but rather meet in one another’s homes. Our school system is strong, and we have nearby private schools for parents wanting that choice. West Sound Academy graduates 100 percent of its students ready to enter colleges, and has a strong international exchange program. Northwest College of Art is an accredited, independent college offering a BFA. Olympic College/Poulsbo Campus offers associate degrees in arts and sciences for college-level freshman and sophomores looking to transfer later, as well as the Running Start program for high school students performing at college level. OC also offers certificate and degree programs in accounting, business, and IT. In 2014, Western Washington University is planning to break ground on a new campus in Poulsbo, which will eventually include student dorms. We are a 75-minute drive to SeaTac Airport; or a 20-minute drive to ferries that drop us in downtown Seattle or north of the city’s traffic crush. We are 15 minutes away from big-box shopping, and 15 minutes from the historic lumber town of Port Gamble. We are an hour from the wine and resort village at the south end of the Hood

Canal, and an hour from the funky maritime charm of Port Townsend. But if we choose to stay home, we have live theater, a multiplex cinema, more restaurants than you might imagine, hiking, biking, water trails, a great farmer’s market, and, of course, that world-famous bakery. Why live anywhere else?
