Seahawks fever floods wharf By SARA HANSEN South Whidbey Record

Coupeville residents could hear the Blue Wave approaching before they could see it. More than 80 Seahawks fans marched down Main Street on Sunday, Jan. 5, to meet at the Coupeville Wharf, posing for a photo on the pedestrian bridge over State Highway 20. The procession culminated in a photo at the wharf. By the time the band of fans reached the historic structure, the crowd had grown to approximately 150 people. Teresa Besaw and Kory Dyer were the organizers behind the 12th Man Wharf event, as well as the Deception Pass 12th Man rally the previous weekend. Besaw said she came up with the idea for the rally, and told Dyer because he makes her ideas come to life. “Kory is a true planner,” Besaw said. “I don’t think about logistics.” The Seahawks had a bye during the first playoff weekend and will play the New Orleans Saints at 1:35 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Century

referring to a 34-7 victory on Dec. 2. As the crowd began to march, they echoed the same sentiments as Besaw. “Bring on the Ain’ts and we’ll spank ’em again,” a few shouted from the crowd.

Residents from all over Whidbey Island were joined by neighboring fans who made the trek for the rally Sunday. “We came all the way out from Sedro-Woolley,” said Heather Grimm.

Grimm is the president of the Skagit Sea Hawkers Booster Club — an official booster club of the Seattle Seahawks. Grimm said she’s talked with Dyer about starting a Whidbey Island chapter. Skagit currently is the fastest growing booster club. “We started with six on a Monday and had 100 in a week,” Grimm said. “We hope to get one started out here.” John Bonilla drove up from Renton for the event, and was selling flags to participants who didn’t have any. “I didn’t make it to Deception Pass (before) — I missed it,” Bonilla said. Another Seahawks fan, Jason Malisch, wanted to show off his Hawk pride by carrying two flags attached to the same pole. By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Hoping to boost tourism, Langley leaders have plans to lure people to town with a new whale-watching center. At the Langley City Council meeting

Monday, Fred Lundahl said a lease has been signed and $5,000 doled out to pay for startup costs. The center, essentially a museum for Puget Sound whales, will be located on the corner of Second Street and Anthes Avenue in the building — owned by former mayor Paul Samuelson — that houses the Langley Main Street Association. The organization provided the seed money for the new whale center in the hopes of bringing people into Langley, adding yet another draw for the Village by the Sea. “We think it’s going to attract a lot of people to town,” Lundahl said. “It will do a lot for economic revitalization in the town.” Creating a whale museum has been an idea for a few months. It was spawned from the Langley Main Street Association, of which Lundahl is a member. Lundahl and others with the

association looked at another whale tourism hotbed for a template: Friday Harbor. “We learned that the whale museum in Friday Harbor is the single most visited spot in San Juan County,” he said. “About 60 percent of the people that come as visitors to Friday Harbor come to do whale-related activities. We realized we are a lot closer to the Seattle Metropolitan Area than they are, and we have whales you can see from the wine bars and the taverns.” That’s no exaggeration either. By NATHAN WHALEN South Whidbey Record For the second time, state auditors are questioning Island Transit officials on how they monitor staff uses of take-home vehicles and fuel cards. According to an Accountability Audit Report issued Dec. 30 by the Washington State Auditor’s Office, agency regulators issued a finding stating Island Transit officials “did not adequately monitor take-home vehicles and fuel card use to ensure they are only used for official purposes.” Island Transit has 14 vehicles and fuel use cards assigned to be taken home. Island Transit implemented a policy stating vehicles and cards can only be used for official purposes. According to the report, however auditors found: • Transit didn’t adequately monitor vehicle and fuel use. Employees are required to report mileage on a weekly basis, but 11 of the 12 home vehicles tested didn’t report mileage every week. • Of the mileage that was reported, fuel use and purchases were not reconciled to miles logged on vehicles to determine SEE TRANSIT, A9

and two baskets of Bird of Paradise flowers were placed at the altar. More than 200 people attended the wedding. Jim wore black shorts with a white shirt, lavender vest and purple bow tie. Bruce was dressed in his Army dress blue uniform. Music was provided by Cathy Hagen on the piano and Bill Humphreys on the viola. Bruce and Jim also asked a barbershop quartet from the mainland to sing during the ceremony. They graciously accepted and were a big hit. The ceremony was moving with Bruce crying and Jim very stoic. Near the end of the ceremony, Bruce said the reason for his tears was that he never envisioned being able to get married in his lifetime. He said how thankful they were for having so many people be a part of their lives and for allowing them to be a part of theirs. After the ceremony,

By JANIS REID South Whidbey Record Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is slotted to receive more than $117 million for P8-A Poseidon and EA-18G Growler squadron programs. The funding is part of the National Defense Authorization Act, which was passed by Congress last year and signed by the president in December. The act sets the policies and priorities for the Department of Defense. NAS Whidbey is expected to receive funding for three construction projects at the base — $32 million for EA-18G facility improvements, $85 million for P8-A facilities and $10 million to replace the fuel pier breakwater. The Environmental Impact Statement process for both aircraft types is underway. The base is expected to receive six or seven P8-A squadrons starting in 2015. In addition, the Navy is considering NAS Whidbey for the addition of two EA-18G expeditionary squadrons in 2016. Capt. Mike Nortier, NAS Whidbey commanding offi-

cer, said the funding allotment speaks to the integral role the base plays in the Navy’s military strategy. “While we are still waiting for Congress to pass the appropriations bill, the prioritized projects contained in the defense bill have been identified as important to the fleet and underscore the importance of NAS Whidbey Island’s strategic role for the Navy’s readiness, even in a tough fiscal environment,” Nortier said in an emailed statement. The bill appropriates a total of $3.2 billion for the Navy’s P-8A Poseidon program and provides full funding, $1.6 billion, for the refueling tanker which is being constructed at Boeing’s Everett-based factory. “This defense bill meets the needs of our sailors and aviators in Northwest Washington and our troops around the world,” said Second Congressional District Rep. Rick Larsen, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee. Larsen said he facilitated language in the bill to help small and medium-sized busi-

nesses secure government contracts. “Small and medium-sized businesses often provide the best products at the lowest costs,” Larsen said. “Because of complex contracting requirements, these businesses often need assistance to compete for government projects. My language in this bill will help more businesses compete for government contracts. It will help companies grow and create jobs, and it will get the best products at the lowest costs to federal, state and local agencies.” Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce Director Kathy Reed, who spearheaded Oak Harbor’s “Jets = Jobs” campaign, said the funding is good news after the economic downturn of the last few years. “Obviously, it’s good news for Oak Harbor in particular and Whidbey Island in general,” Reed said. “We benefit an incredible amount from the presence of the Navy base. After such a depressed economy, we’re already seeing growth. You can’t deny the base is good for business.”

Marilyn Mae Luckett

Marilyn married at an early age to a lieutenant at Fort Jackson, S.C. during World War II. Moving to the Midwest and having two children while living in a Michigan suburb, she had the extraordinary courage to chase her far fetched dreams of becoming a fashion model. In 1956, at age 29, she moved to the arts mecca, New York City, to pursue a modeling career. All she had were some clippings from an Ohio newspaper and photos from a photographer who would eventually become

her husband. After a few years she was in national magazines, television commercials, a regular on daytime TV and ultimately in Vogue. In 1960 she actually earned more than $40,000, an unheard of amount of money at that time — close to $300,000 in today’s dollars, especially for a woman. Knowing that beauty fades, she moved back to the familiar Detroit suburb to raise a second family. She had two exceptional daughters. When they were grown she elected to leave the increasingly frigid winters of the Midwest and join her son on Whidbey Island and live for the next 30 years. She became ensconced in the muchappreciated quieter life of Langley, working at The Wayward Son and as an occasional columnist for the South Whidbey Record. She also loved manning the visitor booth at Choochokam, and winning ribbons for her backyard flowers at the Whidbey Island Area Fair. A serendipitous life to be sure, she passed with her beloved daughter, Molly, at her side on Oct. 3 with few regrets and a very full life. Pretty much everyone in downtown Langley knew her, but few had any idea about the extraordinary adventure that her life was. She is survived by her brother, Jack; two sons, Michael and Mark; and two daughters, Eliza and Molly. Remembrances can be made to Hedgebrook, a female writers retreat on Whidbey Island.

LANGLEY Gill, Jerome, Neff begin terms Three city council members were sworn in Monday night. Many of their assignments, such as Jim Sundberg with the Port of South Whidbey and Bruce Allen with the Island County Tourism committee, remained the same. One major change, however, was the unanimous appointment of Neff as mayor pro tem, the acting mayor in case Fred McCarthy is absent or unable to perform his duties. “She has the experience and ability to fill in any time she may be needed,” said Sundberg, who nominated Neff for the position. Seligson was the previous mayor pro tem and had to fill in for a couple of months when previ-

Setting a list of priorities will be one of the first priorities for the Langley City Council in 2014. The council will meet for a workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 8 to look at the city’s major needs this year. The list was an invention of Mayor Fred McCarthy as a way to track progress of projects large and small. Sure to be on the list are the stairs that connect Boy and Dog Park on First Street to Seawall Park. Several steps have failed in the past year, leading the mayor and city council members to question its integrity. The city’s 2014 budget includes money to evaluate the stairway and whether it should undergo major repairs or a full-on replacement. The meeting will be at city hall, 112 Second St., Langley.

New Public Works director starts job

Stan Berryman was introduced as the new director of Langley’s Public Works department at a city council meeting on Monday. Berryman, a longtime Colorado resident with public works experience in Aspen, Vail and Telluride, was hired after former director Maria Cablao resigned in December. “The towns of Vail, Telluride and Aspen have very similar dimensions to what we have here,” said Mayor Fred McCarthy.

SCHOOLS LMS jazz band selling tulips Jazz band students at Langley Middle School are raising the bar this year in fundraising efforts. The tulip fundraiser aims to collect money for a student trip to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. The 18 students from all three grades will sell potted tulips for $10 each through Monday, Jan. 13. The flowers will be delivered between Feb. 4-6. The students hope to sell 750 plants, up from their goal of 700 last year. “Our main goal is to try and sell at least one to every business on the South End and to individuals as well,” said organizer Paula Simmons. Tulips are available in red, pink or purple. Orders can be placed with any middle school jazz student or by calling 360-331-1869.

SOUTH END Fewer birds seen in annual count The South Whidbey Christmas Bird Count ended with a lower count from the previous two years. In its third year, the South Whidbey Circle of Whidbey Audubon held their annual bird count on Friday, Dec. 27 across the South end. In preliminary reports, the 62 field observers, four kitchen helpers and two feeder watchers counted 13,346 birds grouped into 107 species. In 2012, 15,627 birds were counted for 105 species and in 2011, 14,585 birds were counted for 101 species. The American robin was the most abundant species this year, with 1,291 birds. In 2012, 677 American robins were counted, and 836 were counted in 2011. Wigeons followed the American robin this year with 971 wigeons counted, followed by 741 juncos and 700 sandpipers. Other notable counts included 63 bald eagles, and 31 redtailed hawks. The group also reported a few unusual sightings with four urbanized wild turkeys in the Bayview area and one orange-crowned warbler in the South end. A dramatic decrease in pine siskins was observed this year with 93 counted for 2013 compared to 3,336 in 2012, and 728 in 2011.

A bounty of see-through treasure was found on Saturday during the annual Sea Float Scramble in Langley. Over 300 people came to the event and lined up early to participate. Hundreds of blown glass sea floats, made by Callahan McVay of Callahan’s Firehouse, were hidden in plain view along Seawall Park and at Langley Park at Second and Anthes for young children. Many participants lined up 45 minutes before the 11 a.m. ribbon drop to ensure a front row spot. Over 300 floats were found or sold on Saturday, according to McVay. Many of the treasure hunters dropped by his shop on Second Street after the scramble to buy one at a special price, or blow their own float, so everyone had an opportunity to take something home. People came from throughout the region, including Seattle, Everett, Port Townsend and from all over the island, some by the bus load. They spent the day in Langley, graced by sunshine, walked the seafront, enjoyed the shops and filled the restaurants. “There was at least double the number of people from last year,” McVay said. “It was a great way to start the year. It brought lots of people to town.” Sponsored by the Langley Main Street Association and Callahan’s Firehouse, volunteers worked for participants to enjoy themselves. If a young child was empty-handed after the event, volunteers had pocketfuls of glass sea stars and wishing stones to hand out, which turned pouts to smiles. There were also glass floats hidden along Cascade Avenue, so after the scramble those without a float had a second chance to find hidden loot. People planned to attend the event for months, according to Mynda Myers, manager of the Boatyard Inn. “Some guests booked rooms for the event back in March,” she said. “All our guests participated in the event, and every one came back with a float.” Main Street President Janet Ploof added, “One of the goals of Main Street is to produce events to support

After this year’s success, organizers expect the event to continue to grow in the coming years and endure as a Langley tradition. Editorial Lawmaker updates are appreciated State lawmakers will retreat to Olympia Monday, Jan. 13, for Washington’s 63rd legislative session. Thankfully, two of our three District 10 representatives are taking the time to update South Whidbey constituents on their agenda and the upcoming session by either meeting with them directly or by making special visits to The Record. First and foremost, Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, is scheduled to meet with the Clinton Chamber of Commerce from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Clinton Progressive Hall, Highway 525 and Commercial Street. She will be taking questions from the crowd, and with the recent focus on the area’s future and economic prospects, it’s an opportunity the public should not miss. Secondly, Rep. Dave Hayes, R-Camano, recently contacted each of Whidbey Island’s newspapers with the express interest of meeting with editors and reporters. The idea is to let us know, and thereby let the public know, what he’s been up to and what he has planned for the 2014 session. Congressman Rick Larsen, a Democrat, has volunteered to do the same. He will be making one of his annual tours of the Second Congressional District later this month and his aides made sure to extend an offer to meet with the local newspapers. Whidbey Island does have another representative as well, Sen. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, but an aide with her office in Olympia confirmed Tuesday that the lawmaker will be holding no such meeting on the South End. Bailey will attend a Snohomish County legislative breakfast this week and a League of Women Voters brunch in Oak Harbor this Saturday, both of which will be attended by all three of District 10’s state representatives. But a meeting on South Whidbey does not appear to be on the agenda and it’s a shame. Her predecessor, Mary Margaret Haugen, often visited with South Whidbey residents before the year’s legislative session and they were both informative and valuable. Those elected officials who are taking the time to meet with South Whidbey residents should be congratulated. They can be daunting ventures as such meetings are almost always attended by supporters and critics alike. But they are rare and special opportunities for the public to meet with and share our concerns with the officials we chose to represent us in Olympia and Washington, D.C.

Appreciative of beach access work Editor, Many “thank yous” and much appreciation goes to friend Mike McVay of South Whidbey who recently researched and recorded public beach access on Whidbey Island. Whidbey was developed in such a way that people could buy beach property and build homes there with perhaps the unintended consequence of obstructing even the public access areas. Mike did the work needed to bring to the attention of public officials this reduction/restriction of access of the designated public beaches. The following beaches have been the focus of attention: Robinson Park, Freeland — it used to be a resort; Marissa Lane at Sandy Point, Langley; Wonn Road, Greenbank — the path/walk area is still being worked on; and Shore Meadows condos, Freeland -— there is a 300-foot path to the seawall.

completely unrelated, I came across a letter regarding jet noise at Outlying Field Coupeville. It seems the complaints center around folks having their tranquil lives disturbed by the Navy practicing touch and gos at OLF Coupeville. I don’t recall the exact year, but it must have been about 30 years ago — give or take — that a woman wrote to the Whidbey NewsTimes whining about jet noise. As I recall, the noise was disturbing her vacation time on the island. I wrote a letter to the editor at that time expressing my opinion.

Now, so many years later, coming across this particular article out of the blue, I must comment again. The animals, birds, planes and the base were most likely there long before those whining about the noise were. Where I live now, people whine about train whistles disturbing their businesses or the smell of cows wafting through their neighborhood. Those are minor things. However, the sound of those jets and the practicing they do is never minor. It is for one purpose and one purpose only — to protect your freedom. I would highly recommend these whiny folks think about the alternative if these young people in the military were not willing to

do what they do. I do believe it is a much more difficult job to be in the military today, than when I was in. Instead of whining about your flowers, peace and quiet and inflated dangers of jet noise, I suggest you hush up and move on if you don’t like it. There used to be a sign near the back gate of the base which said: “Please pardon our noise — it’s the sound of freedom.” Well, as I believe I said in my letter all those years ago and will say again to Ms. Wolfe and others: The sound of those jets really is the sound of freedom. Briefly Fort Flagler sport clam, oyster season opens All clams and oysters at Fort Flagler State Park near Port Townsend are fair game now through April 15. The beach near Port Townsend was recently opened to a longer season this year because its clam population can handle more harvesting. The split season — there’s a break from April 16 to May 14 before it resumes May 15 until Dec. 31 — avoids a onemonth seaweed season at the state park. An annual shellfish license from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife costs $14.30 for residents, $33 for nonresidents and $5.50 for seniors.

Turn in hunting report for chance at special permit Hunters have a shot at winning a special hunting permit if they report their hunting activities for black bear, deer, elk or turkey by Jan. 10. Those who meet the deadline will be included in a drawing for one of the five deer permits and four elk per-

mits valid from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31. To qualify for the drawing, hunters must submit a report for each black bear, deer, elk or turkey tag they purchased and for each special hunting permit they received in 2013. Whether a hunter was successful or not, they are required to submit hunting reports by Jan. 31 or pay a $10 fine. “If everyone waits until the last minute, it creates problems with reporting,” said Fish & Wildlife Game Manager Dave Ware in a news release. Puget Sound Anglers club set to disband The final meeting of the Puget Sound Anglers Whidbey Island Chapter will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club. Funds remaining in the treasury will be donated to Helping Hand, the Good Cheer Food Bank, Whidbey Watershed Stewards and Salmon for Soldiers.

By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record One point separated South Whidbey and Lakewood’s wrestling teams after a long day of grappling at the King of the Mountain Tournament in Darrington this past weekend. The Falcons took third place, their fourth top-three finish in as many tournaments, behind Lakewood and first-place Sultan. “That’s one pin,” said Falcon head coach Jim Thompson. “When you lose by one point, it just drives you crazy.” South Whidbey had plenty of chances. Four Falcons wrestled in their weight class’ championship match, but only Andy Madsen won. It was another victory in a stellar season in which the 152pound senior has amassed a 14-1 record and pinned 13 of his opponents. Facing opponents from fellow Cascade Conference schools Granite Falls, Sultan and Lakewood, Madsen saved his top performance for the final match. Madsen squared off against Darrington’s Garrett Green, the third-ranked wrestler in the WIAA 1B classification. “Probably the best match I’ve seen him wrestle all year,” Thompson said of Madsen. “He just handled him. It was a clinic.” Madsen defeated Green in a 7-3 decision, winning the King of the Mountain 152pound title. “The last one was a tough one,” Madsen said during practice Monday, adding that some new moves helped him claim the 152 tournament

138-pound division. Having performed well at other tournaments and matches, an early loss dropped Russell to the consolation side of the bracket. It was a frustrating match for Thompson, who noted that Russell led in the lost match 6-2 at one point before being rolled over and pinned. “I wasn’t really happy with the way we wrestled. I thought we took a step back,” Thompson said. “It’s hard when they should win matches and they don’t. That’s hard to take as a coach, to know your kid is better and loses.” South Whidbey’s wrestlers had several days off in a row from practice around Christmas. Despite the bit of extended rest, and probably a bit of overeating typical of the holiday season, Thompson said it served his wrestlers well. A few were

dealing with nagging injuries and returning from an illness that spread through the high school in December, as well as a couple who had to bring their grades up. Only one Falcon wrestler who competed at Darrington High School didn’t finish in the top five — Will Holbert in the 126, which Thompson called a “loaded field.” Other schools that competed at the tournament were Concrete, Tacoma Baptist and Cascade Christian (Puyallup), which boasts a two-time state champion and one-time runner up. South Whidbey gets to face Sultan, the favorite to win the conference title, at home Thursday in one of only two meets at South Whidbey High School this season. The meet begins at 7 p.m. “They’re loaded this year,” Thompson said. “They’re the best team in the conference.”

She graduated from Oak Harbor High School and she knows a few alumni who now live in California and root for San Francisco. Dyer had an ulterior motive for wanting the 49ers to win. “I want them to lose to us,” Dyer said. If the Seahawks are victorious, they will play the winner of the Carolina Panthers and 49ers game. For the fans, it wasn’t a matter of if the Seahawks would make it to the Super Bowl, but when. Coupeville resident Traynor Hunt said he wanted the Denver Broncos to go up against the Seahawks. “We want to kick Denver’s (expletive),” Hunt said. Malisch said Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning would be unsuccessful in running the Broncos’ offense. “Our defense will pick him apart,” Malisch said. To keep up the momentum, Besaw wants to have a rally on the ferry to meet up with Mukilteo fans. Dyer said those logistics might be more difficult to work out.

As a result, assigned vehicles could be used for activities not related to Transit business,” the report states. Island Transit Executive Director Martha Rose was caught off-guard by the finding. “I was kind of surprised,” Rose said. Island Transit was implementing changes auditors requested from the first audit when the second finding was issued, she said.

“We thought we were moving along well,” Rose said. Rose said several employees take vehicles home because it’s a very effective way to respond to service needs. Staff live on all areas of the island. As an example, she said during times of severe weather, staff can respond faster from their homes to check road conditions. Auditors gave Island Transit a similar finding in 2011 and they consider the issue unresolved, according to the report. Island Transit officials also responded in the accountability report to the auditors’ finding. Officials implemented a new fueling system including data collection that allows staff to track fuel use on each vehicle. Vehicles stationed on Whidbey Island will be fueled at Island Transit’s campus near the Outlying Field. Specific staff will be allowed to fuel vehicles at the headquarters. Reports will outline which employee fueled a vehicle and the mileage driven since

the last refueling, which will allow staff to monitor fuel use, according to Transit’s response in the report. Transit officials will implement a procedure where people with “take-home vehicles” provide an end-of-shift report describing vehicle use and the number of miles traveled. That information will be reviewed for reasonableness and reconciled with fuel use to ensure vehicles are used for official business, according to the report. Rose added that a new fuel system will come online in 2014 at Island Transit’s new headquarters which will provide a better way for staff to monitor fuel use. As for the marking of vehicles, Island Transit said it uses some vehicles for investigative purposes. It aids local law enforcement in investigating potential illegal activity or vandalism at Island Transit facilities. Transit officials are looking to the legislature to address the marking of transit vehicles.

They operate the whale advocacy group out of their Freeland home, taking calls and emails about whale sightings whenever people see a pod of orcas or gray whales. “The time had come,” Garrett said of expanding the network’s reach. “We have a need for more help, but we don’t have room for more help here. This will not only be a whale interpretation center, it will also be a satellite office of Orca Network where volunteers can help us get

things done.” Now, the network has a place to spread their message in Langley — home of the Whale Parade, Whale Bell Park and the whale-watching vessel Mystic Sea. The Langley Whale Center offers free admission. Inside, it will feature displays on whale history, and the entryway will be an 18-foot blue whale jawbone on loan from Monty Hughes, owner of the Mystic Sea. “You can actually walk under this jawbone like an archway,” Lundahl said. There will also be a suspended harbor porpoise skeleton, whale baleen, teeth and bone for visitors to examine and, as Lundahl said, “things for people to touch and feel.”

Stepping up to the lectern

South Whidbey group aims to fine-tune communication skills

By CELESTE ERICKSON South Whidbey Record A trembling hand, a thumping heart and the “ummms” that come with not knowing what to say next: public speaking is a hard skill to master. That was a sentiment echoed from people across the South End interested in improving their speaking and leadership skills through the international organization called Toastmasters on Monday, Jan. 6. The club’s aim is to provide a supportive environment for members to practice and improve communication skills by giving speeches to one another. This was the second meeting for the group, organized by Freeland resident Beverly Rose who saw a need for such a club in the community. Rose had never been to a Toastmasters meeting before organizing the group and came across it online. “I like to start things up when I see there’s a hole to fill or a need to be met,” she said. “That’s what I thrive on, getting things started.” About 30 people attended the meeting, with occupations ranging from business owners to teachers. Their common bond

was that each wanted to improve their public speaking skills, which ranged from first-timers to returning members who had been waiting for a club to start in the area. Members from the Oak Harbor charter, called Whidbey Sounders Toastmasters Club, attended the meeting to help guide the group. Sean Callahan, vice president of public relations of the Oak Harbor charter, said the club has helped him establish confidence and identify his triggers while speaking in front of people. “I’ve moved on from playing with my ring to my hands (when giving speeches),” he said. Callahan has been a member for one year and has given more than 10 speeches, a fast pace within the group. The meetings include three parts: table topics, speeches and evaluations. In table topics, a subject is chosen and people are selected at random to respond for a given amount of time. The second part includes prepared speeches from a few members of the group, which are also timed. The talks are guided by a manual that outlines topics such as organization and motivational speaking.

The final section of the meeting covers evaluations — which are timed as well — and a check on everyone’s time. Callahan said the speeches are often the funniest part of the meetings with subjects ranging from informational to magicians performing their acts. During the meeting Callahan presented a speech called “Why you should jump out of bed in the morning,” commenting on the health benefits of avoiding the snooze button. Oak Harbor resident Mary Jo Strain evaluated the speech afterwards, listing three positives and three things to work on for future speeches. “You learn so much, you don’t realize how much fun it is,” she said about the club. Strain, vice president of membership of the Oak Harbor charter, said the club has helped her become comfortable speaking in front of a group through speeches and evaluations. Another benefit for her is being able to jump into any group around the world. While vacationing in Hawaii, she attended a meeting with a local charter. The club has been around since 1924 with more than 290,000 members internationally.
