We’ve all heard this is the season of giving and two Dieringer Heights Elementary students have taken it upon themselves to give back to Seattle Children’s Hospital Fourth grader Madison Lindsay and fifth grader Henry Jacobson have been collecting coloring books, crayons and markers to donate to the hospital on Christmas Eve. Aside from those donations, Jacobson has been selling “Henry’s Greatest Hits,” a CD he made of himself playing the piano to raise money to also be donated. On Christmas Eve when the coloring supplies are delivered, Jacobson will also bring one of his CDs for each wing of the hospital. He said he had heard music therapy helps people to feel better and helps change people’s moods while they are in the hospital. Both Lindsay and Jacobson have a special connection to Children’s Hospital. Lindsay was born prematurely and she said she had to stay there for a couple of months. Her mom also spent time there when she was younger and Lindsay said her mom remem-
bers coloring books helped her relax and get through tough times. Lindsay has been collecting and delivering color supplies to Children’s Hospital since she was 3 years old, she said. Last year she took more than 100 coloring books and supplies and this year, she said, she wanted to work with her family and Dieringer Heights in the hopes that she could collect more. This year, Lindsay set the goal at 500. Collections stopped Dec.

Future community center named By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer
Demolition began last month at the future site of the Sumner YMCA and now, just a few months away from groundbreaking, the community center can be identified by name. The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties announced the facility’s official name will be The Gordon Family YMCA. The Gordons have been an active part of the
local economy since 1946. Gordon Trucking, Inc., which was founded by Larry Gordon but recently purchased by Heartland Express of Iowa, maintains 2,000 trucks and employs thousands in the area. “Our family has deep roots in the community here, going back decades. We are excited to make a great investment in the future of an area that has given much to our family and businesses, and where we will continue to live and work for many years to come,” Gordon

YMCA President and CEO Bob Ecklund thanked the Gordon family for their generosity and position in the community. “We are humbled to have the Gordon family, who is so engrained in the community – give so generously to what will be the community hub of Sumner and serve an expected 22,000 people,” Ecklund said in a press release. The Gordon Family YMCA will be located on 10 acres, at the intersection of 64th Street East and 160th Avenue East in Sumner. The finished facility will be about 110,000 square feet and cost approximately $35 million. Groundbreaking is scheduled for April, with a projected opening in summer 2015.

Jury convicts defendant in drug related death By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer
The four co-defendants in an October 2012 case regarding the death of Donald Thomas in Bonney Lake are facing consequences of the events that unfolded that day. One of the suspects was found guilty by a jury and may face nearly 20 years incarceration. Two pleaded guilty as charged, one was released for time served, the other will be sentenced in January. The fourth awaits a plea date. Job Edwards was found guilty by a jury for unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful use of building for drug purposes, unlawful imprisonment and felony harassment He faces a sentencing range of 14.5 to 19 years, which will take place at 9 a.m., Jan. 6. in Pierce County Superior Court, Courtroom 323 before Judge John McCarthy. Michael Edwards pleaded guilty as charged and will also receive sentencing at 9 a.m., Jan. 6. Krystal Frietas pleaded guilty as charged to kidnapping in the first degree and was sentenced to 12 months incarceration. She was credited for time served and released Dec. 9.
Colton Geeson was originally charged with attempted robbery in the first degree and has a plea date set for 8:30 a.m., Jan. 3. Job Edwards, Michael Edwards, Frietas and Geeson were initially detained as murder suspects after a body was found in the garage of a Bonney Lake residence, located on 75th Street East. According to charging documents, Geeson reported the gunshot wound to police at about 4 p.m. Oct. 25, 2012. Shell castings and several firearms were recovered at the scene. The victim was found on the floor of the garage, where he was dragged after being shot several times. The death was believed to be a drug deal gone bad, according to investigators at the time of the incident. None of the defendants were charged with homicide. The crime response team and subsequent investigation was impressive, Mayor Neil Johnson said. “Our team of detectives and our law enforcement partners did a nice job in putting the pieces of this puzzle together for a conviction. Anytime you can get a criminal off the streets, especially one who
is violent should make all of us on the plateau and in Pierce County feel good about justice being served,” Johnson said. The information above was obtained from the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Yearly draw down begins at Lake Tapps By Dennis Box Editor
The annual lowering of the water level in Lake Tapps has begun. Cascade Water Alliance has been lowering the water level of Lake Tapps since Nov. 1. According to a release from Cascade the

Dieringer Heights Principal Kevin Anderson said a big focus this year for the school is “Kindness and Compassion” where kids, no matter their age, can help others and do something important. And Lindsay and Jacobson have become leaders in that, he added. Anderson said Lindsay and Jacobson brought the idea to him. They sat down and had a very formal meeting, where the two shared their idea and hopes to him.
It was later taken to the student council where their idea was officially given the OK. “As a school, we partnered with them,” Anderson said. “It was their idea, their design, their goal and its fun.” Lindsay also enjoys the day when they deliver the supplies. She said they don’t get to meet or see any of the kids at the hospital because they are not old enough but they get to meet some volunteers and that means something to her. “It makes my day to see their (the volunteer’s) faces,” she said. Their presence in the
community is big, Lindsay said they have gotten compliments from people they don’t know about what a great thing they are doing. Aside from the local community, Jacobson said they have shipped 100 CDs to his family in Denmark. “These are very generous families and this is a very generous community,” Anderson said. As Jacobson graduates to the middle school next year, he and Lindsay plan on continuing and growing their efforts. They hope for it to be even bigger next year because Jacobson will work to involve his new school.

Shoplifting: At approximately 7:40 p.m., officers responded to the report of shoplifting in progress at a state Route 410 retail store. Asset protection employees attempted to apprehend the subject but he resisted and a scuffle ensued. Two of his friends also engaged in the altercation. No one was significantly injured. The subject was arrested for theft in the third degree. One of his friends was trespassed from the store but the other was not found at the scene.

reported their identity was used to obtain a prescription from a SR 410 pharmacy. Video surveillance of the suspect was forwarded to investigations for further follow up.
Officers responded to a SR 410 grocery store, where a person reported a possible drunk driver. Upon contact, the driver did not appear to be intoxicated, but he did possess two arrest warrants. He was arrested and booked in to Enumclaw jail.
Dec. 13 Vehicle Prowl: A person reported a theft from his vehicle while it was parked at his place of employment on SR 410. The vehicle was left unlocked, but the suspect broke the window out regardless. There was no suspect information or video surveillance available. False Statement: Officers
stopped a vehicle with a cracked windshield and no license plates. Upon contact, the driver began crying and complained of stomach pains. She provided a false identity and didn’t retrieve her license or insurance. Upon further questioning, she provided an accurate ID, which revealed a suspended drivers license and four arrest warrants. She was released at the scene for transport to an area hospital by East Pierce Fire & Rescue. She was issued

At contact, the driver initially denied being the owner but upon further questioning, admitted he lied. He was issued citations for driving while license suspended in the third degree and making a false statement to a public servant.

These are a few of my favorite Bonney Lake things These are a few of my favorite things about the holidays on the Bonney Lake Plateau. See if you can pick out the song lyrics that help me convey my holiday message to you. The holiday tree lighting at the Public Safety Building and on Main Street with silver lanes aglow. When the kids circle the tree and the mayor picks one to flip the switch on the lights. And the kids are singing jingle bells around the Christmas lights. Bonney Lake Elementary Viking Choir who perform each year at the tree lighting. This year they handed out the lyrics so we could sing joyous, all together. What fun! I appreciate our schools who teach our children well. And feed them on your dreams, the one they picked, the one you’ll know by. We have a mayor who is no Grinch. He is no bad banana with a greasy black peel! He accepted my challenge for a food drive that ended Dec. 7 at the tree lighting. He beat me on food collected. He put a bin in front of his house lovingly decorated by his daughter. But I beat him on cash donations. Together, thanks to all your generous donors, we raised $968 and collected 309 pounds

of food. This does not include what City staff did, which I fully expect they will slam dunk us. Remember, hunger happens year round. Please give on a regular basis. The Bonney Lake Kiwanis who each year provide cookies, hot cocoa, hot cider and coffee for the guests at the tree lighting. If you haven’t attended, consider it next year. In addition to the food and music, there were special visitors who were dressed all in red fur from their heads to their feet, and their clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. Donations are received for the food bank and Giving Tree. It is held in the bays of the East Pierce Fire and Rescue headquarters station. Thank you EPFR for your Santa runs throughout the community and pro-
viding a warm place for holiday fun. Sleigh bells rang, were you listening? And thanks to David Wells for putting up the lights along with a little help from his friends (city crews) heedless of the wind and weather. I enjoyed seeing this year’s photos of Shop with a Cop; again with those City employees raising $1800 for that event with sales of refreshments during summer concerts in the park. Children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile. They were shopping for their family first, then themselves. There was gift wrap and treats. And speaking of gift wrap. Above all this bustle you’ll hear about the Giving Tree, coordinated for over 20 years by Barb Wigton who is the records clerk for the Bonney Lake Police Department. Each year, Barb works together with local schools to obtain family information for students who would benefit from the program. Between 800-900 students received gifts last year and I am quite sure the same magic happened this year. Thank you to everyone who makes this happen. My thanks to council members who spend your efforts to make Bonney

He counted pennies for what seemed like years Then the cashier said, “Son, there’s not enough here” He searched his pockets frantically Then he turned and he looked at me He said, “Mama made Christmas good at our house Though most years she just did without Tell me sir, what am I going to do Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes” So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out And I’ll never forget the look on his face when he said “Mama’s gonna look so great” I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love As he thanked me and ran out I knew that God had sent that little boy To remind me what Christmas is all about There are many different sects, denominations, beliefs and religions and to each his own. And for some there are none and that is okay, too. For me, giving is what it is all about. It is in giving we receive.

A layer of protection: When a person suspected or convicted of a violent crime is brought to a hospital for care,

sometimes they attack nurses or other employees. Under Senate Bill 5968, these potentially violent individuals must be accompanied by a law enforcement officer or guard at all times during the visit. Scenic standout: Washington’s got its share of official symbols. There’s a state bird, fruit, insect, folk song and even a ship. House Bill 2119 would name Palouse Falls in southeast Washington as the official state waterfall. The sales pitch: The falls drop 198-feet and are considered one of the most amazing waterfalls in the U.S. and the world. Disclosure duties: A little training might help elected leaders of cities, counties and special districts avoid violations of the public records act that can result in big payouts to seekers of records. House Bill 2121 would require every elected official to complete a training course within 90 days of taking office. Primary avoidance: When voters fill the unexpired term of a partisan county office, as they will for Snohomish County executive next
year, a primary is held even if only one candidate files. Under House Bill 2106, no primary would be held in such instances. The candidate must still go before voters in November in case a write-in candidate surfaces. In the event of an emergenc y: Washington’s constitution lays out how government will operate in an “emergency resulting from enemy attack.” It doesn’t mention other emergencies like a natural disaster. Senate Bill 5971 and a proposed constitutional amendment would update the language to make sure an earthquake, tsunami or even invasion from Idaho or Canada are covered. Many dogs and cats could use some help Welcome back to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. This month, as we celebrate the holiday season with our pets and families, we want to recognize the importance of the safe and caring environment you provide for your furry family members, share some insight on the many dogs and cats in need of adoption locally and throughout the states, and introduce new ways you can help support our pet community in 2014. Every year, approximately 7 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters nationwide and nearly 4 million of those are euthanized. That means that every day, nearly 11,000 pets are put down. Simply put, for every two dogs that enter an animal shelter, one of them is killed off merely because there is no one there to adopt them. To offset this daunting problem, there has been a growing emphasis to show those looking
to add a four-legged companion to their family that adoption should be their first option. There are all types of animals out there without a home, every breed imaginable, from young puppies to senior-aged pets. More often than not, the age and breed of the pet you are looking for is out there, homeless, looking for a new home of their own. The county animal shelters have limited resources and are only able to do so much. To help with the heavy burden of finding new homes for the many pets in need, rescue groups have emerged to help bridge the gap between those looking for a new pet and those pets who are in need of a home. In 2012, Buckley Veterinary Hospital teamed up with a new rescue organization in our community. Left Behind K-9 Rescue launched their rescue operations Jan. 1, 2012, and the group selected Buckley Veterinary Hospital to be its official veterinarian. In its

The group is made up of a collection of volunteers, including Buckley Vet’s own Dr. Kristen Davignon who now serves as part of their board of directors. There are no paid employees, meaning all dollars go directly to the help the dogs in need. Every rescue dog that the group takes in will first visit Buckley Veterinarian Hospital where they will be updated on vaccinations and receive a comprehensive exam before entering their foster homes. While in foster, the dog will be given a chance to live a normal life in the care of a loving family while a permanent home is found. As with any nonprofit, the support of the community will play a vital role in the success of these rescue projects. Left Behind K-9

With the lack of space in the animal shelters, foster homes provide temporary care for a homeless dog while they are waiting to get adopted. It allows for the foster parent to learn more about the dog’s personality, likes, and dislikes so that they can be better matched with the right forever home. Ultimately, the foster homes help save lives and provide a rewarding experience for the foster parent because they know their help is allowing these dogs a second chance at life. With your help, the possibilities are endless.” As an advocate of adopting rescue pets, Buckley Veterinarian Hospital is doing our part to help ensure that Left Behind K-9 Rescue is successful in their rescue missions, so that the dogs

The Sumner Soccer Club Sumner Explosion girls U-13 team won the Tacoma Pierce Junior Soccer Association championship on Sunday, Dec. 15. “These ladies have played hard all season.” coach Patricia Cullip said. Leagues taking shape for next year By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Local teams will see some of their traditional league rivals moving about, the result of the school reclassification system that plays out every two years in all corners of The Evergreen State. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association governs high school sports, establishing enrollment guidelines for the largest 4A schools to the smallest 2B districts. As part of that process, the WIAA assigns district and league memberships. Locally, Enumclaw High School and White River High
will remain right where they are for the immediate future – in the South Puget Sound League 3A and 2A divisions, respectively. But, starting in the fall of 2014, some of their current league foes will be sporting a new address. In preparing for the latest round of reporting, the WIAA changed the rules a bit. Schools now count their freshman, sophomore and junior classes; until this year, they counted sophomores, juniors and seniors. Also factored in is a deduction for repeat 11th-graders; additionally, districts do not have to count students who attend an off-site alternative
program. When all the numbers are crunched, the WIAA attempts to create six divisions of roughly the same size. Starting with a statewide field of 381 schools, 17 percent are assigned to each of the 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A classifications; 16 percent are assigned to the small 2B and 1B classifications. What that means for this region’s schools is beginning to take shape, but will not be decided until January. Schools have the ability to “opt up” and play at a higher level than their enrollment numbers would dictate, and many go that route each year.
Schools have until Jan. 7 to notify the WIAA of their intentions. For every school that opts up, one school drops down a classification. Right now, it appears the SPSL 2A will shrink from eight schools to seven, while the SPSL 3A grows from six teams to eight. The latest round of reporting shows Sumner High has grown enough to land squarely in the Class 3A ranks, meaning the Spartans will move up to the SPSL 3A. There’s an outside chance the SPSL 2A could remain an eight-team league, as Tumwater’s River Ridge
High has appealed for membership. Adding a members requires the approval of league athletic directors and principals. More volatile is the SPSL 3A, which will see three new members starting in the fall. Along with Sumner moving up, both Auburn High and Auburn Riverside have seen declining enrollment and are leaving the Class 4A ranks. In one final move, current SPSL 3A member Decatur High is departing, opting up to the 3A level. Once everything is finalized in January, schools can begin the process of building schedules for the fall.

Must possess reliable, insured, motor vehicle and a valid Washington State driver’s license.

District boasts 90 certified teachers Obituary Washington has the nation’s largest group of newly-certified National Board Certified Teachers, according to numbers released last week by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. A total of 516 Washington teachers achieved their certification this year. Aside from leading the United States in newlycertified educators, Washington is fourth nationwide in the total number of NBCTs with 7,333. Locally, the Sumner School District boasts 90 board certified teachers, according to the state’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Washington state’s investment in the National Board program is critical to its success. The state’s conditional loan program helps candidates pay for the cost of certification. Loans are repaid using the bonuses teachers earn after becoming certified. Half of these new NBCTs participated in the loan
program and will pay back $506,000 into the revolving fund so that money can be made available to new candidates. Board certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards requires teachers to submit a four-part portfolio and a six-exercise content and pedagogy assessment. The 10 entries document a teacher’s success in the classroom as evidenced by his or her students’ learning. The portfolio is then assessed by a national panel of peers. In 2007, the state Legislature passed a bill that awards a $5,000 bonus to each Washington teacher earning board certification. Teachers can receive up to an additional $5,000 bonus if they teach in “challenging” schools, which are defined as having a certain percentage of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch (50 percent for high schools, 60 percent for middle schools and 70 percent for elementary schools).

This will be the summer of the healthy rose plant. I promise to rip out any rose that is diseased or ugly and replace it with one of the new, mucheasier-to-grow landscape roses. I will wait until a warm day in June to plant the seeds of cucumbers, carrots, squash, corn and other heat-loving crops. I will stake my delphiniums and tomatoes before they topple over.
garden and celebrate independence by taking a red, white and blue flower bouquet to a summer party. I also promise to buy more basil and tomato plants mid-summer if the ones I bought earlier have failed to thrive. A cool start to the summer is no reason to live without fresh tomatoes and fresh basil. I will get rid of plants that still look sad from winter damage. I will remind myself that life is too short to put up with ugly plants…and that plants are not children. You don’t owe them a lifetime commitment when they grow too big or become too demanding.
I promise to keep my zucchini, roses and hollyhocks watered this month so they don’t get mildew. I also resolve to pinch back the petunias and deadhead all the annuals and perennials so I can enjoy an autumn full of summer flowers. I will never complain about the warm weather this month. I will think back to how cold it was in January and smile. I will bait for slugs this month and I will water the rhododendrons and azaleas in early fall for maximum blooms next spring.

I resolve to actually feed my lawn in September and not just buy the fertilizer and let it sit in the garage for months. I will buy the slow-release lawn food that improves the soil – even if it costs a bit more. I will harvest all zucchini while still young and tender. I will bring my tender succulents into the house before the first frost. I will harvest my hydrangeas – because cutting back that stem with the flower is an easy way to prune hydrangeas.

I will cut back the yellowing leaves of my hosta this month so they don’t become slug motels. I will cut my peony plants to ground level to keep them free of disease. I will visit the local nurseries this month to snatch the endof-season bargains and to look for more droughtresistant hardy asters to plant in my rock garden. I will remember that fall is for planting.
November I will rake the maple leaves from the lawn and save them in plastic garbage bags. I will add a scoop of soil and poke holes in the bag so the leaves can decompose over the winter. I will remember where I store these bags of leaf mold so I can use the contents to improve my soil in the spring. I will remind myself to see the beauty in an autumn afternoon – even if it means the end of the growing season.
December I will prune my pine, cedar and laurel this month and use the pruning crumbs to fill my
empty porch pots. I will prune off the old foliage on my hellebore plants so I can more easily see the new f lowers starting to bloom. Finally, I will look back on this past year and be proud of myself if I accomplish even half of these garden goals. Keep growing in 2014. •
