The Bonney Lake Senior Center welcomed the holiday season with a concert by the Victor Falls Elementary choir on Dec. 12. The choir of 64 fourth and fifth grade students led by Mark Edgbert performed a variety of holiday tunes to a room packed with senior citizens and parents. Along with singing, the choir included dancing to correspond with some of their songs. Survivor writes inspirational cookbook Local woman promises proceeds from new book to benefit cancer research By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer

the fight of her life with ovarian cancer. She was blessed to win, she said, and from that journey stemmed a project. “Friends in the Kitchen” is a unique cookbook, inspired by her journey and the friends she met along the way. Carol Reed has lived all over the country. From Virginia to Alaska, her husband’s job in the U.S. Forestry
Service brought her face-to-face with the nation’s wonders. But the Reeds have called the Plateau home for 20 years now. It was three years ago, during an MRI for unrelated back pain, that a tumor on her ovary was accidentally discovered. “If anyone can be considered lucky for getting cancer, it would be me. The Bonney Lake City Council held its last scheduled meeting of 2013 on Dec. 10. During the meeting Deputy Mayor Dan Swatman was reselected by the council to continue serving as deputy mayor for another two Dan Swatman years. The role of deputy mayor is ceremonial, Swatman said. It also helps to keep meetings running in the case that the mayor is absent or no longer able to serve, he added. The deputy mayor is also in charge of coordinating activities within the other committees and setting agendas.

thing would be OK,” she said. The angel remains on her sun-drenched windowsill three years later as a reminder she didn’t fight that demon on her own. As a tribute to her triumph over cancer, Reed decided to write a cookbook of sorts. During the course of her treatment, friends from across the country started coming out of the woodworks, she said. “It was nice to reconnect with all these people and know they were supporting me from afar,” Reed said. The rekindled friendships reminded her of recipe swaps. Cooking and eating together is a special way for humans to interact, she said. What sets this book apart from others is what Reed describes as “two minute stories” nestled in the pages. It’s more than a collection of recipes, she said. Each section contains a couple short narratives, describing what part of the country it came from and the friendships that brought it to Reed’s table. For example, “The Mountain is Out” is one of the stories inspired by her time here in Washington, that accompanies such recipes as “Rhubarb Happiness”. Each recipe has a personal connection and as Reed concocts something tasty in the kitchen, she reminisces about the person who introduced it to her. The book is comprised of simple open-up-your-pantry recipes. Readers won’t have trouble finding these ingredients at the grocery store and probably have most of them in the kitchen already, Reed said. “Friends in my Kitchen” is available at Almost Necessities in Enumclaw and online at www.rhubarbglacier.com. The book is dedicated to fighters, survivors and supporters, Reed said. All of the proceeds will benefit cancer research and awareness efforts.

Bonney Lake Nov. 28 Lost Wallet: A person
called to report their wallet was either lost or stolen while in the parking lot of a Bonney Lake grocery store. The responding officer advised the reporting person conduct a thorough credit check and follow up to find out if the wallet is turned in.
Nov. 29 Illegible License Plate:
A patrol officer on South Prairie Road witnessed a vehicle with an illegible rear license plate. A records check revealed the driver possessed four Bonney Lake warrants for failure to transfer title. He was arrested and transported to Puyallup jail.
A woman’s vehicle was broken into while it was unattended away from home. Her purse and house keys were stolen and the incident was reported in King County. When she arrived at her Bonney Lake residence, she discovered the thief had ransacked the home. No further information was available at the time of report.
Nov. 30 Emphasis Patrol: An
officer on DUI emphasis patrol conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle. The driver agreed to perform field sobriety tests, which she performed poorly on. She was arrested for DUI without incident.
Burglary: A home invasion was reported on 183rd Avenue East. The residence was burglarized while the homeowner was out of town. Many items of value were left undisturbed, causing the owner to believe the incident was performed by juveniles. No suspect information was available.
Dec. 3 DUI: Officers assisted a
Kent police commander who conducted a traffic stop in Bonney Lake due to aggressive driving behavior. Upon contact, the driver was determined to be under the influence. He was arrested for DUI and released at the police department, where he waited for a cab to pick him up.
Dec. 4 Serial Shoplifter: At
about 1:45 p.m., an officer responded to the report of a shoplifter in custody at a state Route 410 retail store. The subject was seen taking unpaid merchandise out of a basket and placing it in to a bag, before exiting the store. He was arrested, issued a criminal citation and released at the scene. The subject is reported to have no trespass orders for shoplifting at three other Bonney Lake stores. The report was forwarded to the prosecutor.
Arrest Warrants: A patrol officer ran a records check for a vehicle traveling on 214th Avenue East. The check revealed a suspended license for the
registered owner, which matched the physical description of the driver. At contact, the officer discovered the driver was not the owner, but he did possess a suspended license and four warrants for arrest. He was arrested and transported to Puyallup jail.

person called to report her purse was stolen from a shopping cart while in the parking lot of a SR 410 retail store. There was no suspect information or video surveillance of the incident available.
Hit and Run: At about
9 p.m., a person called to report her vehicle was rear-ended while stopped on 214th Avenue East. The driver responsible for the collision, exited the vehicle to ask if she was okay, but then fled the scene before she was able to report the incident. A description of the driver was available but detailed information about the vehicle and license plate number were not. There were no injuries reported.

Loss Prevention at a SR 410 retail store contacted police in regards to a shoplifter in custody. The subject was arrested, issued a criminal citation for theft in the third degree, trespassed from the property and then released at the scene.
Of f icers responded to the report of a theft in progress at a SR 410 retail store. Upon arrival, the subject was seen leaving the property, so officers trailed behind his vehicle. He failed to pull over when the officer’s lights and sirens were activated. Police continued the pursuit through a construction zone and were able to stop the vehicle with a PIT maneuver. The subject fled the vehicle on foot, followed by an officer. Three passengers were apprehended and the search continued for the driver. A Pierce County Sheriff K-9 assisted and the subject was eventually found in Buckley. He was transported to Pierce County jail and charged with theft, felony eluding, three counts of reckless endangerment, driving

Something tells me it is time for my Christmas present advice column. My columns generally prompt some screaming arm thrower at a city meeting to throw some arms at me, usually attached. Today’s column is designed to be a self-help guide to the universe of buying presents for your wife or girlfriend. Christmas is such a special time of year that I always try to mentor the young married couples and Dennis Box those preparing Editor for the big fall to understand just how hopeless and happy it all really is. At a certain crossroads in my life I learned an essential lesson when buying presents at Christmas or Valentine’s Day, or any other present giving trap day. I am sure you have heard the axiom, “it’s the thought that counts.” If you believe that one you had better be adding lots of 151 rum to the eggnog. You are going to need it. It may be your only friend for a while. Here is the secret, and this part of the column is for men only. Women should stop reading until the last line, please.

Reducing SR 410 speed from 45 to 35 mph You are coming up Elhi Hill on state Route 410 doing 55 mph until you get to the Ascent Gateway and you slow to 45 mph (or if you don’t you will frequently be under the scrutiny of a traffic officer with a radar gun). If it is a clear day, the beauty of Mount Rainier looms large in front of you. Welcome to Bonney Lake says the sign. Then when you get to the signal at the top of the hill by the Dairy Queen, the speed drops again to 35 mph until you pass the next signal (at the Chevron) and it goes back up to 45 mph. What? Confused? Impeded? Speed trap? With the upcoming intersection improvements at Veteran’s Memorial Drive and SR 410, consideration is being given to the aesthetics of putting a 3-foot landscape median from Veteran’s Memorial Drive to Main Street on SR 410. The city plan is to redevelop downtown and make it as attractive and accessible as possible for current and future businesses in the triangle area. The construction of the median would impede ingress and egress to businesses that currently use the two-way center left turn lane

to access businesses such as Grocery Outlet and the businesses near the Park-and-Ride on the south side of SR 410. Another concern is a median, such as the 3-foot tall median installed in Eastown, blocks your vision of seeing the business on the other side of the median. While trees are traffic calming, they in addition to the height of the barrier are a concern. The city is looking for something more aesthetically pleasing, perhaps curb height. This will require a lowering of the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph. Another goal of the city has been frontage roads, ways to circumvent SR 410 but keep the traffic moving, especially for business access.
During recent construction of the Main Street and SR 410 intersection, that driveway near Wendy’s accessing the Park-and-Ride was used to move traffic to and from Sky Island Drive. With the construction of a barrier, this option is gone; however Veteran’s Memorial Drive fits the bill. Public Works Director Dan Grigsby said the design is 100 percent complete. In a memo in a recent city council packet, City Engineer John Woodcock stated that in a September 2013 meeting with WSDOT the city sought options to remove or reduce the impacts of the median barrier in Downtown. Subsequently, WSDOT conducted a speed study in that area of SR 410 and determined 85 percent of vehicles in that stretch are currently traveling under the 45 mph limit. In fact, the average speed is 40 mph, but of course we who travel that corridor already know that. The memo goes on to state the objective is to continue to provide a safe condition for the traveling public while enhancing the economic viability of the future for this por-

Or, when I am sitting at the light on Main Street and Veterans Memorial Drive I watch cars turn north on Main, turn into the first driveway on the left (future site
of the EPFR headquarters), turn around and head back to westbound Veterans Memorial Drive to access the auto parts store, the Windermere building, AM/PM and 182nd Ave. They do not realize that Main Street will take them to 182nd Avenue and by turning left they can access all those businesses without U-turns. The argument for not providing signage when I was on the council was “people will figure it out.” I have been off the council for about two years and drivers still have not figured it out. You see, Downtown is my part of town. It is where I bank, get my dry cleaning done and take my cats to the vet. It is where I buy auto parts, purchase this newspaper out of a box and keep trying to buy a winning lottery ticket. I buy my GF Thai food on the way home from work. Before my diet changed, I ate delicious pub grub and deli food in downtown long established eateries. I alternate getting my ice cream after a late night craving between DQ and
Wendy’s. I can run to the store to pick up a missing ingredient. My dentist is there. I have gone to the chiropractor’s office, the podiatrist and my daughter took dance lessons in Downtown 20 years ago. I have had my hair styled and used the services of an attorney. I get my computer fixed at the Computer Shack. We get license tabs for our three vehicles there. I attend meetings at the Municipal Justice Center, go to the library, go to the post office, donate to the food and clothing banks and attend meetings at the Public Safety Building. People tend to shop and use services in their neighborhood, and downtown is mine. I shop Bonney Lake first. I agree that businesses must be visible and accessible to be profitable and that is part of the balance the city has to strike. They have not done it yet with Main Street and the curb at 182nd on Veterans Memorial Drive. Things like changing street names affects business’ budgets, having to change checks, stationery, websites, adver-
tising to reeducate their customers where they are. Are you on 184th or Main Street or Sky Island Drive? Is The Old Naches Trail, Old Buckley Highway, Sumner-Buckley Highway and Veteran’s Memorial Drive the same roadway? Why doesn’t my GPS show that? I do believe traffic flow is better with the recent improvements made at the SR 410 and Main Street intersection. Kudos for that, and I hope the improvements at the Veterans Memorial Drive intersection do the same as far as traffic flow. However, there have been 163 accidents in that short 2-3 block distance, and one of which was a fatality. WSDOT wants a median to prevent those accidents that kill, maim and impede traffic. The two way left turn lane (some refer to as a suicide lane) must go. Bottom line, safety is more important than aesthetics. There are too many separate driveways in that short distance coupled with increased growth on the plateau which will continue. I look forward to

Discussion will continue at the committee level at their January 2014 meeting before it comes back to the full council for action. I wonder if this will also go to the economic development committee, since if speeds are reduced up to 192nd it not only impacts the Downtown shopping district but also Midtown? Sumner coach inspires on and off the field Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer
Girls soccer coach Robi Turley has been coaching the Spartans for nine years and for the first time in Sumner School District history, a team has won back to back championships. The Sumner Spartans defended its state title beating the Bellingham Red Raiders 2-0 in the state championship game on Nov. 23. Turley grew up in Auburn and attended Auburn High School. She played three sports in high school and went to the University of Oregon where she played soccer for the Ducks. Before starting her coaching career at Sumner, Turley coached at Kent Meridian High School and the Washington Premier FC Club team. Junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach Lisa Murray started coaching with Turley at the club level. When a coaching position at Bonney Lake High School opened up, Murray told Turley she thought of applying and instead Turley told her to come and coach along side her at Sumner. Murray did and has now had the opportunity of
coaching two of her daughters one who graduated in 2010 and one who is still on the team, junior Alyssa Murray. Turley said talent and determination allowed the Spartans to not only go to state again but to also defend its title. “We had an up and down season but it peaked when it counted the most,” she said. Turley said the Spartans will be five seniors short next season but that shouldn’t stop them from competing. “My junior class (has) stellar athletes and have had quite the career so far,” she said. “Experience will be to our advantage.” The success over the last two years, Murray credits to having extremely dedicated girls on the team who play soccer all year round. “We have girls who want to play soccer,” she said. “We don’t just have girls that are athletic but we have actual soccer players.” Not only does Turley help her team succeed on the soccer field, volunteer assistant coach Lindsay Smith said, “she teaches them more than just soccer, she teaches them the importance of being a good person and a positive member of society.”
Murray added, she has created a culture that allows the girls to be active in the community, whether that means participating in cancer walks, volunteering or being the marshals at the Santa parade for two years in a row. Because of Turley, the team understands to be not only good soccer players but also be good representatives of Sumner High School. “The girls have a role in the Sumner community and that is because of Robi,” Murray said. And Smith added, Turley encourages good grades among her athletes. “She recognizes the importance of being a student athlete,” she said. Murray said Turley is a good female role model not only for the players but for other coaches out there. She said it is cool to see young, talented female coaches. Smith said Turley is a very humble person and that she feels like that is one her many great qualities. “Robi does not seek recognition for anything she does whether it is things in school or soccer, she is always making sure other people get recognized for their efforts,” Smith said. She said even when Turley won Coach of the
Year, she didn’t take credit for it but gave the credit to her assistant coaches and the players and parents and her family. Murray also credits the girls for the success of the team. “It is the girls who win the games,” she said. There is a huge time commitment to coaching, Murray said and Turley sacrifices a lot. Turley is a mom of two and she works hard to find a good balance, Murray said. “She is an inspiration to her students and athletes and myself included,” Smith said. “The world needs more people like Robi. I have learned so much about coaching, being a teacher and more importantly

The Panthers made the trip to Enumclaw and brought home a number victories across the weight classes. As a team Enumclaw won 44-25. “Enumclaw is a tough, tough team,” coach Anthony Clarke said. Individually three-time state placer and two-time finalist Colton Tracy started out the South Puget Sound League 3A season with a major decision at 132 pounds over Enumclaw’s Hunter Haney. Tracy’s match was stopped several times for bleeding, but that didn’t slow down his focus. “He has come so far and has really turned a corner,” Clarke said. Swatman FROM 1 When Swatman joined the Bonney Lake City Council he was first on the Community Development Committee and after Pam Cleveland he was appointed deputy mayor. That was before Mayor Neil Johnson was the mayor of Bonney Lake. Johnson said he has had the pleasure of working with Swatman since 2002 when Johnson was elected to the council. “Since he has been deputy mayor, he has worked hard for the council membership in making sure their goals and priorities are communicated,” Johnson said. “I really appreciate the fact that we work well together in bringing consensus on the tough issues that face Bonney Lake.” The deputy mayor usually changes more often than it has lately, Swatman

When asked about both good and bad times while he has been on the council, he said he tries not to dwell on the bad things. “It’s not good for your health,” he said. A good thing Swatman mentioned was “getting a great mayor with Neil Johnson.” He added it is important to have people that can work well together. He said the council members do a good job gravitating to the committees that they both have interest in and have knowledge on. O t her p osit ive s Swatman mentioned were finally getting started on the infrastructure in Eastown, the Fennel Creek trail and the Victor Falls property. “Being on the council for so long, you actually start to see things happen,” he said. That isn’t always the case for people who only
serve one term, he added. A big change that Swatman is pleased with since being on the council is getting more professionals to work at the city, he said.

Development Committee was created and the Finance Committee was expanded to be the Committee of the Whole, allowing more members of the council to be able to attend meetings. The remaining meetings for 2013 were canceled by council. If there is an issue worthy of a meeting, the council will call a meeting and inform the public that they have done so. Until otherwise noted, the Bonney Lake City Council will meet again at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7 for a workshop. Also, all city of Bonney Lake offices will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Wednesday, Dec. 25 and also on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Keeping the Heat Turned On By Britt Nelson Director, Plateau Outreach Ministries We know it is December when we receive a phone call from “Sally.” She calls every year when the weather turns cold and her electric bill rises. Sally is an elderly woman who lives alone. Sally is on a Social Security income and manages her budget all year, except when winter comes. Sally is a worrier. She doesn’t want her bills to be late. She doesn’t like that she can’t pay them on her own without help. As she ages, each year her call becomes a little more distressed. She is no longer physically able to get to POM for help, so we go to her. Each year, we receive training to take applications for the federal energy assistance program so that we can help people like Sally. One of our trained staff or volunteers will go to Sally’s home to complete the application process so that Sally can receive a federal energy assistance grant for the winter. In-home visits are only provided to homebound individuals who qualify for the program. Individuals who are able to come to POM can make an appointment to complete the application here in our office with assistance from the team from the Multi-Service Center of Federal Way. Last month they served 80 families in one morning! That means 80 families did not have to drive to Federal Way for help. Another familiar call this time of year goes like this, “I haven’t turned my heat on because I can’t afford the electric bill. It’s getting too cold for me now. Can you help?” Often it is a neighbor making a call for someone they know. This is not uncommon,

especially for senior citizens. We also find that as people are trying to be frugal by not turning up their heat, other issues arise like frozen pipes or worse, health problems. We are thankful that because of our donors, we can help local families stay warm in their homes and also connect them to additional resources for the winter. Here is the other side to stories like these. I had a city employee come up to me at the Thanksgiving Service and say, “Thank you for doing what you do. We are so glad you can help people keep their heat turned on. The day we send shut-off notices is the worst day of the month.” This was a reminder for us how difficult it is for the utility company as well. They don’t want to see people suffering either. Another reminder was when we called Puget Sound Energy to make a pledge for one of our neighbors. The customer service person couldn’t believe our call. We’re thinking she must have been fairly new, but she was amazed that total strangers would be paying this family’s bill so their heat wouldn’t be shut off. After questioning who we are and how we help, after overcoming her awe, she said “that is really great, there should be more places that do what you do.” We are thankful that with the support of our community, we are able to keep the heat turned on in our neighbors’ homes, especially the seniors in our community. Fitness chat: take care following any injury Dear Stephanie and Bruce: I enjoy working out, participating in fun run events and maintaining a healthy habit of physical activity. As I have been working toward my goal of improving my physical Stephanie Norton-Bredl fitness I have had a few minor training injuries that interrupt my progress. Please provide recommendations for making progress with fitness while mitigating the frequency and severity of injuries. Jeff, age 43 Dear Jeff: Thank you for your interesting question. Please accept that our recommendations are limited to our personal experiences of having to temporarily stop or modify training due to an illness or injury. As always, please consult your healthcare provider for medical care. We certainly understand the frustration of being sidelined from illness or injury when you are striving to improve your
health and fitness. It’s discouraging when you begin to see progress and then have to stop or slow down. However, it’s important to listen to your body. The more in tune you become with Bruce deJong your body, the more likely you are to give it the care it needs so you can be back to your exercise routine as soon as possible. Every person has varying levels of tolerance for pain or discomfort; this is where getting to know your own body is important. Many individuals experience stiffness or soreness when they first start to exercise but this typically dissipates as their body acclimates to the new demands of physical activity. Here are three things to consider: 1. Never dismiss pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms as these may be symptoms of a heart attack and should be

Warm up and cool down. 2. Stretch. 3. Wear good footwear. 4. Seek instruction how to use exercise equipment at home or the gym. 5. Increase intensity or duration gradually, no more than 10 percent per week. Sometimes when you are recovering from an injury you can modify your exercise routine to rest the injured area and work other areas of the body to stay fit. For example, swim or ride a stationary bicycle if you are unable to run or stick to upper body exercises if you have a pulled muscle in the lower half. Consulting with your physician or a physical therapist can help

According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of “Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter,” exercise has a direct impact on the brain. you determine what you can continue to do while healing. If you are extremely limited in mobility due to injury or illness, often gentle stretching is still an option. It’s also a good time to focus on setting different types of goals. Consider healthy eating or stimulating your mind; maybe take an online class or take up a new hobby. Dealing with illness or injury can be frustrating but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. Keep a positive attitude, focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot do, and plan how you will get back to your routine once you are able. Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body’s nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body’s heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).

onney Lake held its annual holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday December 7th at the Public Safety Building located at 18421 Veterans Memorial Drive E. Approximately 350 people attended the celebration. Sponsored primarily by the Bonney Lake Kiwanis Club, the annual tree lighting and food
drive features activities, music, refreshments, candy, pictures with Santa, and the annual tree lighting ceremony. Participants were treated to a concert by the Bonney Lake Elementary School Choir, directed by Laurie Selle.

Mayor Engages BLHS Students
M
ayor Neil Johnson, Deputy Mayor Dan Swatman, and several other City officials and community members served as facilitators at the recent BLHS Youth Forum. Students participating the Forum describe what they like about Bonney Lake, what concerns they have about the community, and then brain storm things they can do to make a positive difference in addressing community concerns. At the recent BLHS Forum, students praised Bonney Lake for being a safe, clean, friendly community with a lot of natural beauty, including the local lakes. They appreciated the variety of shopping opportunities. Some of the student concerns included a relative lack of youth activities, drug and alcohol use among students, an interest in more upscale retail shops, and more parks, ball fields, and recreational opportunities.
Council Adopts Budget Amendment
T
he Bonney Lake City Council held a public hearing Tuesday November 26th on the Mayor’s proposed amendments to the adopted 2013-2014 biennial budget. While the Council made few changes to the adopted budget, several capital projects were added as a result of grants or other financing. For the most part, capital improvement funds come from impact fees, system development charges, and grants, and can only be used for specific purposes. Councilmembers Dan Swatman, Donn Lewis, and Randy McKibbin also took the oath of office administered by Chief Judge Ronald D. Heslop following their successful re-election bids. The Council then re-elected councilmember Swatman to another two (2) year term as Deputy Mayor (Council President). The Council will recess for the holidays. The next regular Council meeting will be January 14th.

stand and reclaim my living room this week, especially my brand new couch, which I had to cover with a blanket to keep it from getting hairy. To fully commit to this relocation, I bought a “cat bungalow” for the family room, cleared a shelf so she had her own eating station if sharing food became an issue, threw them together, locked the screen door (they know how to open it), and left the house to enjoy the Holiday Light Festival at Wild Waves Theme Park. When we got home, there was some indication of a tussle or a desperate attempt to flee, but they seemed no worse for the wear. I have no idea what occurred in the night, but I suspect they are still in a tussle for dominance,
because our older cat refused to go to her eating place on her own this morning. So I escorted her, she ate quickly, then went back outside. This really is a Christmas story, though. I have to stand firm on this separation of kitty and kitchen, because it’s time to make almond roca. I don’t want to spend my day guarding the candy on the table while it cools and then while the chocolate exterior hardens. I don’t want to keep watch over the Christmas tree, which will probably be a new experience for our little cat, as well as wrapped Christmas gifts; anything that crinkles is fair game for a mischievous cat. But mostly, it’s the Christmas season; the season of kind-
ness and giving. So to loosely quote Dr. Seuss’s Grinch: “Then the kitties thought of something they didn’t dare! What if Christmas, they thought, isn’t about what is most fair? A couple months ago we rescued a cat from my mom’s mobile home park. It had been drifting around for a couple years and had become the unofficial trailer park cat. The problem was, no one would take her in and she survived on scraps and her own wits. Additionally, after having her first litter at nine months old and two since, she was undersized.
