Questions about the county’s two different noise disclosures are compelling the Island County commissioners to review the issue next week. Disclosing the scope of jet noise that a homebuyer might experience has become a frequent topic in the wake of a federal lawsuit filed by a Central Whidbey-based citizens group in July. The Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, or COER, are upset over the noise generated by EA-18G Growler during landing practices at Outlying Field Coupeville. The Navy is conducting an environmental impact study

on the noise generated by the Growlers, which are replacing the EA-6B Prowler. COER and a citizens group on North Whidbey have complained that the Growler is louder and that the Navy is conducting too many touch-and-go operations at Ault Field in Oak Harbor and at OLF Coupeville. In response, Navy representatives have said that the Growler operates at a similar noise level to the Prowler, but conceded that touch-and-go operations have exceeded their estimates by roughly 3,000. Charge filed for soliciting 13-year-old on Craigslist

OH likely to approve pot regulations in January

A Navy man is facing a felony charge after being caught in an Anacortes Police Department’s undercover operation to catch sexual predators on Craigslist, court document indicate. Jovanny A. Natareno, 24, of Oak Harbor, was charged in Skagit County Superior Court on Nov. 27 with communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. Anacortes police’s operation targeted people who seek children for sexual encounters through the “casual encounters” category on the website Craigslist. The detectives posed as a 13-year-old girl “looking for a more mature type of friendship” and posted a photo that depicted a current law enforcement officer when she was 12 or 13 years old, according to a report by Detective Mike Hansen.

It’s three months into a six-month moratorium and Oak Harbor planners are making progress crafting rules for marijuana-related businesses. It’s unclear, however, if the regulations will ever be used. So far, nobody has applied for a marijuana-related license for a business inside the city of Oak Harbor, though there’s been more than a dozen applicants for elsewhere in Island County. Oak Harbor Development Director Steve Powers said the Planning Commission looked at the draft regulations for the second time this week; he expects the members will study it again and possibly pass it on to the City Council in January. Blogger latest victim in spree of South Whidbey burglaries By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

A well-known South Whidbey community activist and blogger became a victim in a string of burglaries that’s hit the area in recent weeks. Carolyn Tamler and her husband returned to their Freeland home after a short vacation Dec. 2 and realized they had been burglarized after walking into their bedroom. Two jewelry boxes were missing as well as four of her husband’s watches. They called the Island County Sheriff’s Office in the morning and Lt. Evan Tingstad immediately responded to their home. He informed them that they weren’t alone, but that a burglar — or possibly a team — has been hitting homes in isolated areas of South Whidbey. Undersheriff Kelly Mauck reported that the department has received 16 reports of residential burglaries on the South End

since Nov. 1. During the same period last year, only two burglaries were reported. “That’s a significant increase,” he said. Tamler wrote about the burglary on her blog, which she said “went viral” on South Whidbey. Many people are worried about the increase in break-ins, she said. “There is a lot of shock and disbelief that crime has come to Whidbey Island,” she said. Tamler said Tingstad told her that the burglars are probably residents of Whidbey Island who know where to find out-of-theway homes to target. The burglars didn’t damage anything in Tamler’s home. She said they probably got into her house through a door that wasn’t deadbolted. “It’s kind of a wake-up call for all of us,” she said.

Boaters brave the chill By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

Although the journey isn’t long, Byron Skubi knows that leading a parade of boats on a chilly winter night in Puget Sound can pose some challenges. “There are a fair number of crab pots you have to watch out for,” Skubi said. “You always have to worry about someone falling overboard at night, which can be a problem. Many years ago, a cat fell overboard and was actually rescued.” Skubi has seen a lot in 25 years of participating in the Oak Harbor Yacht Club’s Lighted Boat Parade. Although temperatures were in the mid 20s on Dec. 7, the event went off without a hitch, with Skubi leading nine other boats on a voyage from Oak Harbor to Coupeville. The event is a longtime yacht club tradition open to anyone with a boat who wants to participate.

Last year, wind wraught havoc on the parade, keeping boats within Oak Harbor. But this year, other than frigid temperatures, it was smooth sailing. “It went great,” said Terry Mills, who skippered his 45-foot trawler, Slow Flight, with wife Myra and several friends on board. “I think it was probably the best boat parade we’ve taken part in. It was probably the best organized. “The thing that was key was the positioning and separation of the boats. Normally, the separation tends to get out of control.” Skubi, piloting his American Tug, Mojo Workin, kept radio contact with other skippers to keep the boats together. Skubi led the decorated boats past the Coupeville Wharf and to the southern shores of Penn Cove before heading back to Oak Harbor.

The event coincided with the “Greening of Coupeville” celebration. A judge at the Coupeville Wharf gave out two awards to best decorated boats. The winner in the powerboat division was Scott Ashworth in the Indigo. The winner in the sailboat division was Janis Mund in a vessel named Skookumchuck that is familiar to Skubi. Skubi was the former owner of the 37-foot sailboat, but admitted piloting a powerboat with a heated cabin was a more enjoyable experience. “It was one of the coldest ones,” Skubi said of the lighted parade. “Boy, what a mariner. Good grief,” Mills said of Mund. “To sit back in that sailboat, she was probably freezing to death.” The Oak Harbor Yacht Club dates back to 1948. For information about the club, call 360-675-1314.

After spending six years in his garage, Eric Peterson’s business has a store front. “It’s grown enough to be able to purchase this space,” said Peterson, Ashley’s Design owner. “It’s still blowing me away.” Peterson started the shirt screen-printing company, Ashley’s Design, because of his experience trying to order custom printed T-shirts. He’s the Oak Harbor High School cross country head coach and the girls’ track team head coach. When the teams ordered shirts, sometimes they would not receive them for six to eight weeks. Peterson thought there must be an easier and more efficient way of getting shirts, so he created Ashley’s Design with the focus of having fast turnaround times for orders. He makes sure orders are delivered in two weeks. Now that he’s at his new location in Trader’s Village, 390 N.E. Midway Blvd., Suite A105, he has a lot more room. “When you start taking up two spare bedrooms and half the garage, people are not going to be happy about it,” Peterson said. He purchased new equipment to expand the business’ capacity for orders as well. With his old machine he could print 35-40 shirts

an hour manually, but now can print 300-400 an hour. With the expansion, Peterson said they are now selling letterman jackets. High schoolers from Oak Harbor and Coupeville can try-on jackets there and order them. Besides coaching, Peterson teaches business marketing and runs the DECA business club at the high school. The shop prints most of the shirts for the high school clubs and sports teams and now employees two parttime employees who are also students. He said his business is a great learning experience for them. Kali Linson is a junior at Oak Harbor High School. She’s been working at the shop since it opened at the Trader’s Village location Sept. 25. “More and more people started coming in since I started,” said Linson. “There’s been steady growth.” She likes working at Ashley’s Design because there’s always something to do. “I like meeting people and making connections,” Linson said. The name of the business came from Peterson’s niece, Ashley, who was 8 years old at the time he started screen printing. “She is so creative and artistic, just seemed like the perfect name,” Peterson said. Ashley came to see the shop for the first time for the grand opening and was excited,

Stretching the household budget using coupons By SARA HANSEN Staff Reporter

Adults gathered around long tables with coupon books — clipping, passing and chatting away as rugrats played with Duplos and other toys in the center of the tables. “We have C-O-O-K-I-E-S for the kids,” Amy Hannold spelled out for the parents, so she wouldn’t cause a sugar riot amongst the children. For the past three years, this has been Hannold’s favorite part of the week. She is the North Whidbey Coupon Club coordinator, and every Friday morning devoted couponers congregate to clip and confer about their week. “It’s the quilting bee for people that want to save money,” Hannold said. Hannold works with Ula Lewis, Good Cheer volunteer coupon coordinator in Langley. Together they run the Whidbey Coupon Club. Lewis started couponing when she was a kid and carried the practice into adulthood when she was raising 11 kids. “They had everything they needed and mostly everything they wanted,” Lewis said. Most of her kids are couponers and Lewis uses her skill at Good Cheer. “Coupons are cash,” Lewis said. “These are currency.” For every dollar she spends for Good Cheer, she is able to put $5 worth of food on the shelves. “I have a hard time paying $1.79 for a can of tomatoes that I would’ve paid 30 cents for,” Lewis said. Lewis also brings items she’s purchased with coupons for Good Cheer, so people can buy products while they’re there. The items also visually illustrate her point and she sells them for what she paid. At the Friday meeting, she brought a dozen eggs she bought for 49 cents and snack-size Nabisco cookies for 65 cents. When people arrive, Hannold has four bins set-up of coupons filed by

She also provides a good deal alert list, which Lewis writes, tips to get organized, meal planning and a coupon shopping list. She also provides scissors and paper clips for attendees to use. “We’ve grown 30 percent in the past eight weeks,” Hannold said. “It’s a lot more effort for these bins to stay full.” Boxes are being set-up around town to collect unwanted inserts. Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Oak Harbor Senior Center Whidbey Island Bank and the Oak Harbor Christian Reform church are collecting inserts, but more drop-offs are needed. “If they’re going to end up in the recycling bin, they can do a lot more mileage here,” Hannold said. Even if coupons have expired, the club still collects them. The commissaries overseas accept coupons that are six months past the expiration date, so they are sent to families that can use them, Hannold said. Many different types of people attend the coupon club. From young parents to empty nesters, the club has someone from almost every demographic. And they help each other. “I’m watching skills get passed around the room,” Hannold said. Renee Fangman, Oak Harbor resident, is one of the experts who offers her assistance to others. Her mother taught her about couponing when she was young, but she didn’t

Part of the reason Fangman coupons is so she can stay at home with her kids. “It would be a lot tighter if I didn’t coupon,” Fangman said. When starting out, Fangman focused on Walgreens and CVS. She would collect coupons for nonfood items, such as toiletries and cleaning supplies. “Food coupons are scarce compered to toiletries, laundry detergent and things like that,” Fangman said. “It’s a lot of information if you’re starting out, so start with one store and branch out.” As she built a routine, she was able to expand into other areas. Fangman uses a binder and clear baseball card sheets to store her coupons. That way she can flip through and see what deals she can maximize on in the store. “I use coupons on sales to stretch my dollar more,” Fangman said.

For example, one store had macaroni and cheese on sale for two for $1. She had a coupon for that specific product which gave her $1 when purchasing two items. Therefore, she was able to get her macaroni and cheese for free. When she shops, other shoppers sometimes give her looks because of her coupon binder. “They think ‘Oh she’s a couponer,’ but I’ll strut it,” Fangman said. Fangman has coupons mailed to her from a friend in Nevada and she buys four Saturday Whidbey NewsTimes a week. She buys the newspapers at Starbucks and uses a gift card — one that she’s earned from other point-based system offers — to purchase the papers. Then after earning stars through Starbuck’s reward program, she can have a free drink. With the assistance of the Internet, couponing has become

easier, Lewis said. Between websites, blogs and social media, it’s easier to find out great deals fast. “A lot of places do the work for you,” Fangman said. Fangman started using apps on her phone to help find more deals. She uses Shopkick, Viggle, Ibotta and CheckPoints. To be successful with coupons, one must have realistic expectations, Hannold said. The work needs to reflect what the person is willing to put into it. After the show “Extreme Couponing” came out, a lot of people expected Hannold to teach them how to make huge purchases with coupons. That’s not a realistic expectation, Hannold said. “Everyone coupons differently and for different things,” Hannold said.

Citizens have a right to know what’s going on in their community PUBLISHER’s column

Sheriff’s and police blotters can be an entertaining part of the newspaper. However, they also serve a number of important purposes, among them informing residents about what’s happening in their back yards … perhaps even their front yards. I thought about this the other night. It was about 2 or 2:30 a.m., and I awoke to notice headlights peaking through the bedroom blinds. The lights were bright, and they remained stationary for several minutes, though I could hear the car’s engine idling. I live in a very quiet neighborhood in unincorporated Island County, so I decided to get up and check it out. It struck me odd that the car idled in front of the house two doors up, then pulled up in front of the house next door. Was my house next? I flipped on the front porch lights and watched. The strange car quickly pulled into the driveway across the street, backed out and sped away. It was not one of our newspaper carriers. The paper didn’t come out till the next day, Saturday. It was, however, garbage day. The cans were lined up along the road awaiting pickup later that morning. I lost sleep fretting about this. Is it possible that someone is driving through neighborhoods, picking through garbage cans for personal information … or food? The former is somewhat alarming, though I don’t leave personal info in my garbage. The latter was rather sad as it was just after Thanksgiving. Either way, I thought, “how would I know what’s happening in my neighborhood.” The Island County Sheriff’s Department does not make its full crime report available, not anymore. As I tossed and turned, I thought, “I wouldn’t know if this was a problem.” The crime reports are provided by the sheriff’s department on an irregular basis, and they contain scant information. Businesses on island depend on the Navy Editor, All you have to do is watch what is happening with the Boeing Company to understand what will happen to Coupeville and Oak Harbor. The workers voted down their contract and Boeing is looking elsewhere to build its 777. Drive the Navy away from its training field, and you don’t think there is other towns that will welcome them? Just like Boeing, there will be other states and towns begging them to come. You signed a letter, as I did,

understanding there was a Navy base here and there would be jet noise. Do you really think if the Navy leaves the island that nothing will change? Do you think there will be enough business for Safeway, Albertson’s, Market Place, Walmart, Kmart and all the other businesses on the Island? If you do, then you’re dreaming. Navy=JOBS! group that has filed a lawsuit is upset because the Navy is protecting its Outlying Field from harassment and possibly more lawsuits by installing a security barrier preventing vehicles from driving on the airstrip and, in general, warning the public that the OLF is federal property and to keep out. Apparently, the Navy did not confer with them about how they should go about doing this, much to their chagrin. How anyone could think this would hurt tourism is beyond me, and, yes, there are keep out signs to protect the Navy and civilians alike. I’m sure the next time the Navy has to deal with a security issue they will put COER and Maryon Atwood on the top of their consultant list. Mike Van Voorst Oak Harbor

COER ‘whiners’ need to revisit closing papers Editor,

I, for one, am tired of the continual diatribe that is printed about the COERS group; no one cares. They will never take responsibility for the fact that they didn’t bother to read all of their closing papers. If they are truly suffering, a little common sense on the part of this group would be to move. Please stop acting like you didn’t know the jets flew over your homes. Really? You knew there was a naval air base here. What on Earth made you think the jets wouldn’t be loud? I was told by one member that the noise could cause me to have heart issues while I’m sleeping and jets are flying. My cardiologist said that this statement is ridiculous; if that were true, they couldn’t have sailors sleeping on board while the jets fly off and on the carriers. I had two heart attacks while living in the Midwest. Since moving here, my blood pressure is down and I’m fine. I’m not deaf, and I sleep like a baby, even when the jets are flying. This, by the way, is over my house. I was offended by the fact that if they poked me enough, and yelled loud enough I would buy into their delusions. They reminded me of spoiled children having a temper tantrum. This group has no legal leg to stand on and they know it. I’m sure we will find that they will go from one thing or another to complain about. They all really need to move back to where they came from; clearly this island isn’t what you thought you could change it into. And it would be refreshing to see the newspaper print someone else’s opinion on life on the Island. Sally McKinney Oak Harbor

Sedro-Woolley man should keep opinions to self Editor,

I served in the Korean War in the First Marine Air Wing and am

aware of aircraft noise, although prop aircraft are not as noisy as jets. The jets flying over my house in the Outlying Field landing pattern are noisy. The pattern altitude is 1,000 feet above the runway at ground level, but the Navy uses the aircraft carrier height as above sea level. So, they actually fly about 600 feet as OLF is at 400 feet altitude. If they flew at the AGL altitude, the noise would be much less as sound decreases as the square of distance. As Joe Kunzler lives in SedroWoolley some 40 miles away, I doubt he hears any of this noise. If he is so hot to defend OLF, I suggest that he buy a house under the OLF pattern to get firsthand knowledge of the noise and then I will listen to him. In the mean time, please keep your opinion to yourself, Mr. Kunzler. Gordon Givan Coupeville

Anti-noise group actions risk chasing away the Navy Editor,

So, I see from the latest on the Field Carrier Landing Practices at Outlying Field that the United States Navy is making concessions and taking it to the base or El Centro … El Centro? That is 20,000 pounds of JP5, paid for by the same people who hate the noise and the Navy, to travel down there and back. Now ain’t that smart, when they could do it here were it not for the tree-hugging, Subaru-driving hippies who oppose OLF? Has anyone read an environmental impact study from, say, NAS Oceana, VA or NAS Lemoore? No? Those communities support the U.S. Navy and don’t complain. The P-8 is on the horizon for Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and more EA-18G’s is a boost to the economy unseen since the 1980s. But you’re doing your job and chasing away the Navy. Congratulations for increasing taxpayer cost and giving the Navy the leverage it needs to go to NAS Lemoore, where men are men

Perhaps U.S. Navy should add second row of barriers Editor,

Frankly, I think that the security enhancing barrier recently installed at Outlying Field Coupeville needs a second row to prevent unicycle-riding audioterrorists from penetrating its first line defenses. We would then have the added benefit of providing ample space for taggers and gang-bangers — of any bent — to express their feelings with travelers on a U.S. highway as their audience. The Navy could then foster an outreach to the community to over-paint the tagging with government-sanctioned murals designed to enhance the Ebey’s Historical Reserve along with the moribund appearance of a dirty old landing strip behind the beauteous wall. Think of the good will that could be generated by such kumbaya. Beating a dead horse is so much fun. Scott Smith Oak Harbor

Forget-Me-Not fundraiser will help pay for new van Editor,

As the chapter commander of DAV Chapter No. 47 in Oak Harbor, on behalf of our members, I would like to thank all of the local businesses for supporting our annual Forget-Me-Not drive. We are grateful to the citizens of Whidbey Island and surrounding communities for donating so generously on

Veterans Day. All donations received will go toward purchase of a new van. The van transports veterans from Island County and four other counties up and down the Interstate 5 corridor to the Seattle VA Medical Center, Monday through Friday. Regulations mandate for the safety of all motorists the van may not be used for transportation beyond 200,000 miles. Currently, our van has 180,000 miles. We have approximately six more months of usage before we will need to replace the van. Currently we are averaging 100 veteran riders per month. If you are a veteran in need of a ride to the VAMC, please call 360-257-4801 weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As we strive to provide services, we are always in need of Volunteer Drivers and Chapter Service Officers. As a 30-year retired Navy man living in this community, I can’t find words to express my dismay, disappointment and disgust at the total lack of any respect and observance by this paper of the 72nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Not one word. Only the continued whining and crying of the COER group seems to be in the news on this day, a day when so many paid the ultimate price to pass along the freedom that these fine folks now use this many years later to degrade the finest navy in the world for their own self centered intrest. CONTINUED FROM A1 people’s trash, there’s nothing to tell me that. If I called to report the suspicious activity, would anyone benefit since little is shared with the community? The lack of information is, I believe, a disservice, not just to our readers, but to the community as a whole.

This was a concern I shared directly with Sheriff Mark Brown recently during a luncheon.

Crime reports, as mundane as they may seem on their surface, tell a story. They provide the readers with an overview of what kind of crime activity is taking place in their communities, possibly in their own neighborhoods. When I covered the Island County Sheriff’s Department as a crime reporter, I was placed at the computer and allowed to scroll through each call that was received. I collected a reasonable random sampling, and even mentioned if there were false reports. Some of the entries might be humorous, some were very serious. The point was, I was able to share this information with the readers. The community was informed. People read the blotters and responded positively to them. During that time, I learned how much crime deputies respond to … and how hard they work. The current blotter provided by the sheriff’s department is clearly scrubbed of much of its useful information. Having blotter information in the newspaper also serves some purposes for the sheriff’s department. First, when it comes time to ask for more taxpayer dollars, they can refer to the kinds of calls they are responding to. Currently, if the sheriff’s blotter we receive is any gauge, it shows a few minor incidents are being reported. Can that be correct? Is that all there is? If I were asking for more money, I’d want to present the best case possible and show what we’re doing. Also, blotter items can lead to tips. If there are others who witnessed unusual or suspicious activities, a mention in the blotter can yield new information. Ultimately, the sheriff’s department and employees work for the taxpayers. There is no excuse for withholding blotter information. It all falls under the realm of public information. As we enter a new year, I’m hoping Sheriff Brown sees the importance of keeping the community informed and provides the newspaper with greater access to information about what’s happening across the island. The public deserves to know what’s going on in their community.

Nichols Brothers sailing back from hard times By Amy Watkins The Everett Herald

The Nichols Brothers Boat Builders shipyard in Freeland buzzes with work these days. A new Washington state ferry superstructure — what will become the Samish — is being built in one part of the shipyard while a smaller ferry for Wahkiakum County, a tugboat and a landing craft are under construction in other areas. Repair work is also under way on a couple of different fishing vessels. “We’re at a full load right now,” said Matt Nichols, chief executive officer of Nichols Brothers. “Things are going well.” A busy shipyard is a good sign for Nichols, 66, who since 1972 has helped to lead South Whidbey’s largest private employer and one of the only privately owned shipbuilders in the state. Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, located on 12 acres at 5400 S. Cameron Road, specializes in steel-and-aluminum vessel construction and repair. The company was founded in Hood River, Ore., in 1939 under the name Nichols Boat Works by Matt Nichols’ father and grandfather, Frank and Mark Nichols. It was Frank Nichols who brought the business and his family to Freeland in February 1964 and ran it for the next eight years. Matt Nichols and his younger brother, Archie, bought the family business from their father in 1972 and renamed

it Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. Matt Nichols became the company’s president. “From there, we just kept buying land and expanding,” he said. “We went from 10 employees to 250 right now. I don’t think there is anything we haven’t built, from tug boats to passenger ferries, fishing vessels, fire boats, research vessels and high-speed military vessels.” The company throughout the past 49 years has formed a strong relationship with its surrounding community, Nichols said. That history includes a time in 1978 when a customer couldn’t pay for a fishing vessel and the shipyard was dangerously close to shutting down. The community raised $600,000 to help finish construction of the ship and kept the shipyard open. Nichols Brothers Boat Builders paid back the money with interest, Nichols said. “That was a tremendous showing of the community,” he said. “Everybody put up money. It was a tough time, but a touching time and light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be very bright.” The company’s story also includes other difficult times. In November 2007, Nichols Brothers Boat Builders filed for bankruptcy protection. The company survived when the investment group, Drum Capital Management based in Stamford, Conn., bought it in early 2008. Matt Nichols in January 2012 was appointed chief executive officer of the company.

The shipyard contract for construction of the ferry split between Nichols Brothers Boat Builders and

Vigor Industrial is $112.1 million and the total cost of the vessel is $126.4 million, according to Washington State Ferries. The two Washington state ferries are the fourth and fifth ferries that Nichols Brothers Boat Builders has worked on with Vigor Industrial. Work on the superstructure is on schedule, said Chris Richards, project manager. The ferry is designed to carry 144 cars and up to 1,500 passengers. It’s the fourth ferry Richards has worked on during his 33 years with Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. He was also project manager during construction of the superstruc-

ture for the state’s first new Olympic-class ferry, the Tokitae, delivered in March to Vigor Industrial for final assembly. Richards, 54, also worked on two ferries that service the Port Townsend to Coupeville run. “It’s nice to build something that actually services Whidbey Island,” he said. “It is kind of fun to brag a little and say we helped build this when riding with family and friends.” The Nichols Brothers Boat Builders portfolio contains more than ferries and tugboats. It also includes 50 high-speed catamarans and the Empress of the North, a 360-foot sternwheeler designed to cruise both the Columbia River and the

Inside Passage between Seattle and Juneau, Alaska. The most advanced vessel Nichols Brothers Boat Builders has constructed is the U.S. Navy’s X-Craft, launched in 2005. While the company’s portfolio continues to grow, Matt Nichols said he’s most proud of his employees. “I’m pretty protective of our employees and the quality of the workmanship that they put out,” he said. “In a business like this, you have to have a good price, a good delivery schedule and quality. Wildcat girls basketball team can’t scale Mt. Baker Mountaineers use varied attack to stop OHHS in nonleague game By JIM WALLER Sports editor

The Mount Baker High School girls basketball team hurt Oak Harbor with the long ball in the first half and then from the key in the second to defeat the host Wildcats 65-51 Friday, Dec. 6. Oak Harbor scooted to a 9-2 lead, then the Mountaineers (2-0) went on a 21-6 run to lead 23-15. At one point during the surge, Mount Baker hit four consecutive three-pointers. Midway through the second quarter, Mount Baker led 33-25, then Oak Harbor rallied behind five points from Annie Leete and a three by Jinai Guzman to trim

the gap to one, 33-32, at the break. In the first half, five different Mountaineers hit threes as they went 6-for-13 from the arc. Emily Yost had two of the threes and finished the half with 10 points. Yost did her damage from the inside in the second half. The 5-10 junior, coming off a school record 39 points earlier in the week, settled in the post and dominated the paint with 16 points after the break. She also had a game-high 13 rebounds, six on the offensive glass. Guzman scored on a fast break on a nice feed from Natalie Fiallos to open the

second half, and Oak Harbor led for the final time, 34-33. Mount Baker led 40-39 with 5:32 left in the third quarter and then started to pull away behind 10 points from Yost. By the end of the period, it was 54-47. Oak Harbor scored only four points in the fourth quarter and never threatened. After Leete scored 14 firsthalf points, the Mountaineers shifted to a box-and-one defense on the senior guard and held her to four points the rest of the way. Leete’s teammates weren’t able to pick up the slack as the Wildcats went cold in the second half. They shot 41 percent over the first two

periods but only 25 percent in the third and fourth quarters. Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said, “We played better on offense in the first half.” He added that his team needs to “develop some posts” to help the offensive production. Leete finished with 18 points and Guzman, who hit four threes, had 14. Fiallos added seven, Liz Lym six, Hayley Lundstrom four and Brook Peplinski two.

Leete led Oak Harbor with eight rebounds, and she and Fiallos collected four assists. Emily Brandland backed up Yost with 17 points. Oak Harbor outshot Mount Baker 33 percent to 32 percent, but the Mountaineers put up 17 more shots thanks to a 12-6 edge in offensive rebounds and a 20-23 edge in turnovers. Early explosion lifts Blaine by Coupeville in boys hoop opener First-game nerves contributed to a slow start for the Coupeville High School boys basketball team in its 84-50 loss at Blaine Saturday, Dec. 7. The Wolves had trouble taking care of the basketball and the Borderites, especially Josiah Westbrook, had little trouble converting the mistakes into points. Westbrook scored 22 second-quarter points on the way to 27 for the half to lead the Blaine blitz. The Borderites went up 22-12 in the first quarter and put the game away by outscoring the Wolves 28-10 in the second period behind a flood of turnovers. Blaine’s burst was aided by frequent trips to the foul line, owning a 16-4 edge in first-half fouls. The Wolves eventually lost three players to disqualification. Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said “some of the guys were a bit nervous” and it took a few quarters for his players to settle down; the Wolves

went on to outscore Blaine 17-15 in the third quarter. Because of foul trouble, Coupeville was forced to shift to a zone defense in the second quarter and Westbrook drained threes and slashed to the basket. “He was shooting from 30 (feet),” Smith said. Westbrook ended up with 29 points, including four three-pointers, and seven assists. Smith, who saw Blaine play the previous night, said, “I honestly thought we could beat these guys. We just need to execute better.” “We did some good things, but we need to do them on a more consistent basis,” Smith added. The Wolves ran the break well at times, Smith said, and he liked the play of Matt Shank and Morgan Payne. “Shank played a nice second half,” Smith said, and “Payne played a good floor game.” The Wolves will look at the game film and make adjustments, Smith said. Nick Streubel scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Coupeville. The Coupeville High School girls basketball team’s willingness to work paid early dividends as the Wolves defeated visiting Meridian 46-34 Saturday, Dec. 7. The night before, Cedar Park Christian-Bothell stopped the host Wolves 49-39. After the loss, the Coupeville players asked coach David King if they could come in early Saturday to sharpen their skills for that afternoon’s game with Meridian. The morning session primed Coupeville for its nonleague win over the Trojans, King said, and displayed the team’s excellent work ethic. “They are a great group of girls,” King said. Meridian, with the help of a rash of Coupeville turnovers, led 10-8 after one quarter. The Wolves took the lead for good at the beginning of the second quarter on two free throws by Makana Stone and a bucket by Amanda Fabrizi. Those scores plus two free throws by Julia Myers, three by Fabrizi and six points by Hailey Hammer contributed to a 15-2 run. The Coupeville defense limited the Trojans to only two points for the first 6:15 of the second quarter, but another knot of turnovers allowed Meridian to score eight points in the final 1:45 to cut the lead to 23-20 at the half. A three-point basket and a steal and layup by Fabrizi opened the fourth quarter and a 12-point lead. Meridian never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Natareno allegedly told the detective that he was also being investigated by the Navy for offering to sell methamphetamine and soliciting prostitution on Craigslist, the report states. “Jovanny Natanero suggested he was initially just looking for someone to connect with and was surprised himself that he continued with the communication to the 13-year-old (undercover identity),” the detective wrote. A judge in Skagit County District Court released Natareno on his personal recognizance Nov. 27 and ordered him not to have contact with children under the age of 16.

Noise disclosures CONTINUED FROM A1 disclosure statements and present his findings during the commissioners’ work session Wednesday, Dec. 18. “There’s a lot of interest and people are trying to understand,” said Commissioner Helen Price Johnson. “I think it’s important that the county provide this information in a comprehensive way.” Chapters 9 and 14 of the Island County Code both contain noise disclosure statements but cover different areas, said Wechner. Island County adopted a noise ordinance in Chapter 9, “Public Peace, Safety and Morals,” in 1992. Former Island County commissioner Mac McDowell said this “Airport and aircraft operations noise disclosure ordinance” was adopted after the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure Commission considered Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for closure. The BRAC process led some residents to voice their concerns about jet noise levels, McDowell said, and prompted Island County to adopt a noise disclosure ordinance to ensure area homebuyers are properly

informed about what they might expect. The 1992 disclosure, which is four paragraphs and specifies that touch-and-go operations are performed at “tactical military jet aircraft facilities” and are “scheduled during day and night periods.” “Additionally,” the disclosure states, “the noise generated by a single flyover of a military jet may exceed the average noise level depicted by the airport noise zones and may exceed 100 dba.” Despite the existence of the noise disclosure ordinance in Chapter 9, Island County real estate agents currently provide homebuyers with a noise disclosure notice based on the version in Chapter 14, titled “Buildings and Construction.” The Chapter 14 disclosure contains four sentences and states: “The property is located within an airport noise zone 2 or 3 impacted area. Persons on the premises may be exposed to a significant noise level as a result of airport operations. Island County has placed certain restrictions on construction of property within airport noise zones.

Local planning organizations control land use planning and zoning, including noise zone real estate disclosures.” According to the Navy’s Air Installations Compatible Use Zones, or AICUZ, document, it is not recommended that residential development occur within noise zones 2 or 3, which exceed an annual average of 65 decibels. “The community’s land use regulatory agency needs to enact land use controls to ensure the highest degree of health, safety and welfare of their constituents,” states the AICUZ document.

Director aims to bring out the true meaning of Christmas in off-season musical revue at Whidbey Playhouse

During rehearsals for a musical revue at Whidbey Playhouse, Karina Mitchell heard a voice that made her eyes light up. Known for her own booming voice that grabs an audience’s attention, Mitchell was taken back when she first heard Lisa Berritella sing. “She owns a big operatic voice,” Mitchell said. “I thought, ‘Where did she come from?’ It’s always nice to discover new talent here. “Lisa’s good.” Mitchell and Berritella are part of a large cast that will be performing in the off-season musical revue, “Christmas Snapshots,” that begins Thursday, Dec. 12, at Whidbey Playhouse. They are examples of a wide range of talent and experience assembled by director Sarah Russell to share music and tales that she hopes will stir up memories and remind audiences about the true spirit of Christmas. “This is a collection of songs that I thought could represent the full Christmas season,” Russell said. “I had this dream, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to come up with songs that would lift the spirits in the holidays and share what the holiday season is supposed to be about?’ It’s about love and giving, not so much about gift buying and the commercial part.” Russell is no stranger to the playhouse, having performed or directed in plays since she and her husband first arrived in Oak Harbor in 1979. But it’s only been in recent years that Russell and her

They’re the ones who win you over.” The cast for “Christmas Snapshots” numbers about 45 on a given performance, ranging from local theater veterans to first-time performers. The show is a mix of solo singing and guitar performances, chorus and instrumental acts, dancing, storytelling and magic all played out in front of large screens that display video images of the holiday season.

The instrumental group, ‘Enchanted Flutes,’ add to the variety of ‘Christmas Snapshots.’ Talent ranges from a former professional opera singer in Berritella, who sang in East Coast productions, to a local children’s chorus. For Sarah Russell, it’s all about variety and providing snapshots of Christmas. “I like to work with all generations and guide them

along in a production that gives them an opportunity to stretch and grow and entertain,” said Russell, a part-time elementary school music teacher in Oak Harbor. The last show Russell directed at Whidbey Playhouse was the 2012 offseason musical revue, “Wish

Enchanted Flutes are back for “Christmas Snapshots,” though some on only specific dates. “Christmas Snapshots” will only have six performances, starting Dec. 12 and wrapping up Dec. 21. “We love it,” said Kim Breilein, director of the Enchanted Flute choir, made up of high school students and young adults from Oak Harbor and Anacortes. “We participated in the Disney show last year. It was one of the more rewarding things we’ve done. Everybody was very enthusiastic about doing it again.” Sarah Russell’s excitement rose during auditions when she listened to performers and gained ideas and inspiration. She found that certain people had a gift for expressing certain messages, sharing how she was touched by Dann Davies’ reading of “The Gift of the Magi,” among other examples. She was aware of Mitchell’s vocal talent. Since graduating from Oak Harbor

ago because of her husband’s military service. Berritella, from Rochester, N.Y., has performed in professional productions as an opera singer on the East Coast and in Southern California. She sings solos for “Breath of Heaven” and “O Holy Night.” “I didn’t even know she existed in our community,” Russell said. “She walked in and blew me away.” Allenda Jenkins, former

president of the Whidbey Playhouse who sings as a part of a quartet with her husband, Jamar Jenkins and another married couple, Anjelica and Joseph Glasgow, said Russell has a knack for bringing wide ranges of talent together.

It’s all part of the message of spreading good will this holiday season and bringing the community together. The show ends with a father and daughter, Matt and Shelby Montoya, alone on stage, singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Those sort of personal touches didn’t come by accident. “They’re sharing their interpretation of each holiday song,” Russell said. “It’s about love and being together for whoever you are with this holiday season.”

Peace and good-will to those this Christmas season FAITHFUL LIVING By JOAN BAY KLOPE

I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow There are no bells in my neck of the woods to hear at Christmastime, for I live at the end of a country road. Still, the beautiful words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow roll through my mind so wild and sweet. I hear them as I make my way down crowded grocery aisles and run our teenager from one activity to the next. But to experience their magic entirely I must quiet the recesses of my heart. First, I offer my thanks for Longfellow. Then I thank God for my wonderful dad, for it was he who introduced me to one of America’s most beloved poets. When I grew old enough to understand historic imagery and had myself collated enough life experiences on which to draw, Dad began to read his favorite poems to me, most often as I readied for bed. Laying on his back, he’d stretch out atop my bedspread and hold the book of his current fascination above his head to block out the ceiling light and read out loud. Eventually I’d crawl under the covers and beside me he’d read. At first I heard the abbreviated language of poetry and was left mystified. I’d interrupt, “I don’t understand what that means!” in sheer frustration before Dad patiently explained his interpretation. In time I came to love the sound of the words, the imagery, history, and poetic conventions. In college my love of words overstepped practicality and any thoughts of a specific career, and I eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in American literature. And it was there, in various dorm rooms and library carols, while toiling over the short stories, books, and poetry produced by American writers, that I came to understand the depth of Dad’s gift to me. Not only did he give me a love of words that would bring joy over a lifetime, but he would use the words others so beautifully penned to speak love to me. Dad’s love for me continues, even though this will be the eighth Christmas to arrive since his death.
