Company applies to grow pot at K2 By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

If an off-island company’s plans pan out, the K2 building could one day hold a large marijuana growing operation. According to information released last week by the state Liquor Control Board, Def Clown West, a company registered to a Redmond man, has applied for a license to produce marijuana at the vacant, 180,000-squarefoot building on Vashon Highway. Another company has applied to grow marijuana on Wax Orchard Road. The application period closes Dec. 19. Def Clown West, a limited liability company (LLC) registered to Dirk

Christian, applied for a Marijuana Producer Tier 3 license at the K2 building, meaning the operation would be 10,000 to 30,000 square feet. Christian, reached by The Beachcomber, confirmed that he applied for the license, but declined to say anything about his plans or whether a sale or lease of the K2 property was pending. “It’s early in the process. We’re still in the try and see phase of this,” he said. “I don’t have anything I can share with you other than yes, we’re interested in locating our business there at that location.” According to his LinkedIn account, Christian graduated from the

University of Washington in 1992 with a degree in international business and is currently an internet marketing and e-commerce manager for a company that sells products for log homes. Christian is also the listed agent for two other Def Clown LLCs that have applied for marijuana licenses in other locations. Def Clown applied for a license to process marijuana at an address on Camano Island, and Def Clown South applied to grow pot at an address in Roy, a small town in southwest Pierce County. After a local farmer’s barn burned to the ground in a large fire that also destroyed thousands of dollars of tools and equipment, islanders turned out in droves to help the longtime Vashon man handle the scene left behind. Last week, George Singer stood in the charred remains of what was a large, twostory barn at his farm in picturesque Paradise Valley. On the evening of Nov. 22, a fast-burning fire tore through the barn, fueled by 20 tons of hay stored inside. By the time crews from Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) arrived, the structure was completely engulfed in flames and part of the roof had already caved in. “If they would have been at the head of the hill when the call came in, they couldn’t have saved it,” Singer said. Since then, however, Singer, well-known as the head of Singer Farm and well-loved in the horse community and beyond, has been touched by what he called the generous island

“It was really shocking, and it’s hard to see that kind of loss,” said Sarah George, a friend of Singer who has helped organize the cleanup effort. “I would crumble for all of the things he lost.” In all, Singer, who grew up on the farm and now

lives there with his wife Marilyn, lost nearly the entire 40-by-60-foot barn, the hay that was to feed his cows and horses over the winter, as well as a car, a tractor and about $150,000 SEE FIRE, 18

Over the years, Vashon Island Audubon President Randy Smith has gotten phone calls from birders wondering how they could snag a copy of Ed Swan’s book, “The Birds of Vashon Island.” Printed in 2005, all 750 books sold quickly, and it was a rare day that a used copy appeared on a bookstore shelf. Lately, though, Smith has been able to offer words of encouragement to those hungering for the second edition. “I tell them, ‘He’s working on it.’” Indeed, eight years after that first edition, Swan is about to issue the second edition of “The Birds of Vashon Island,” and birders throughout the region are already eagerly anticipating it. His is a singular contribution, Smith said, a compendium that provides information not just on the different species of birds on Vashon Island, but also their nesting habits, migration patterns, habitat needs and historic ranges – a snapshot in time as well as a look at the way Vashon’s ecosystems have changed over the years. Work begins to replace yacht club docks Last week construction began to install a new and environmentally friendly dock system at the Quartermaster Yacht Club. Club members voted to approve the $2.1 million project last year, choosing new docks over a less expensive partial rebuild of the current structure in Burton. A rebuild would have lengthened the rapidly deteriorating docks’ lives, but wouldn’t have included improvements to make them more environmentally friendly, according to Commodore Dennis Williams. The new docks, set to be in place by midJanuary, will have fewer pilings, penetrable walkways and less square footage of overwater structure. They will also have more

slips, allowing more members to join. Crews are currently removing the old docks — some of which will be moored in the harbor until this weekend — and a Tacoma company will tow the new dock system into the harbor for installation. Williams said club members that have spent significant time on the project are pleased to see it come to fruition. “We are ... very proud of the fact that we are able to bring the facility up to current environmental standards, which is a huge benefit to the health of Quartermaster Harbor, without using any public money,” Williams said. — Natalie Martin

Unless it finds a new source of funding, Vashon Youth & Family Services’ (VYFS) basic needs program could be at risk. Last spring, VIVA, a program that serves islanders who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, lost an $80,000 annual grant from King County that has funded it in recent years. While the King County Council recently designated $10,0000 in funding for VIVA in the county’s 2014 budget, the program still doesn’t have enough funding to continue the same level of financial assistance and longterm planning for islanders in need, according to VYFS director Kathleen Johnson. Johnson said that since March, VYFS has utilized other parts of its budget to sustain VIVA, but it needs at least $30,000 more to continue the program next year, and even more in order to grow the program to meet current needs. “The $10,000 is going to help stabilize it so at least we can keep the program running through next year,” Johnson said. “We are committed to serving ... this group of vulnerable people, but we can’t serve them at the same level we could serve a year ago or a year before that,” Since 1996, VYFS, through the VIVA program, has provided rent and utility assistance, emergency housing, food and medical vouchers as well as help with long-term

planning and access to other social services to very low-income individuals and families. Last year it served more than 150 families. Debbie Rieschl, the VIVA coordinator, said the annual grant it has received from the King County Homeless Housing Program changed its qualifications this year and also became more competitive, and Vashon ultimately lost the $80,000. As a result, since this spring, Rieschl has been unable to commit as much of her time to the program as she has in the past and can’t provide as much to VIVA clients. At the same time, she said, need for the program’s services is growing. All other VYFS programs are seeing double-digit growth. “I’m spread thinner,” he said. “I can’t do as much.” Asked if the program is at risk, Rieschl said she is trying to stay positive. King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, who was integral in securing the $10,000, has promised to look for more funding for VIVA, she said, and the program has begun partnering more with other nonprofits. “I know that my phone rings off the hook, so it’s needed,” she said. “I’m a little too busy to know if it’s at risk.” Johnson said VIVA will most likely continue, but how much it will be able to assist islanders will depend on whether it can secure more funding. “Right now it’s about survival for the program, keeping the doors open versus being more strategic and proactive,” she said.

The Vashon Park District will vote on its 2014 budget at its board meeting next week. The public is invited to attend. The budget is slightly more than $1 million, according to Elaine Ott, who manages the district and has been preparing the budget with commissioners this fall. Notable in the budget, she said, is that the district is moving toward contracting out a sizable portion of its maintenance and relying on seasonal workers during peak times. “That is a big change from prior years,” she said. The district also needs to determine how much it will have to spend to complete the clearing and grading permit at the VES Fields, she noted. That work must be finished by 2015. Reached on Monday, commissioner Lu-Ann Branch characterized the budget as tight overall. She added that she is unhappy with the district’s financial condition, but she believes finishing the work at the fields is necessary. “It’s important to bite the bullet and push through,”

she said. As of the last park board meeting, commissioners did not have firm numbers on what it will cost to complete the work at the fields, though estimates are that it will be more than $100,000. Branch noted she would prefer firmer figures before voting, but if necessary, she said, the new board can change the budget as it moves ahead. “Thinking might change with new board members,” she added. The most recent draft of the budget Ott brought to the board for discussion included nearly $782,000 for district administration, approximately $307,000 for maintenance, $21,000 for the Vashon Pool, $8,000 for programming and slightly more than $100,000 to complete the work at the VES fields. In other park district news, Scott Harvey, a new board member, was seated Nov. 26. John Hopkins had served in that position, but because he was originally appointed to the board to fill an unexpired term, his tenure ended with the certification of the election. Doug Ostrom, who also won a seat on the board, will begin his term in January. The meeting will be at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Ober Park.

Winterfest returns with tree lighting, parade Vashon will kick off the holiday season this weekend with activities for all ages. Winterfest weekend, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, will begin with the First Friday gallery cruise, when galleries open from 6 to 9 p.m. The weekend of art will continue Saturday and Sunday, when studios around the island open for the annual Holiday Art Studio Tour (see story, page 16). On Saturday, downtown merchants will welcome shoppers and other guests all day as they look for gifts and drop off open house coupons — printed in The Beachcomber — in hopes of winning prizes. The main Winterfest event comes Saturday evening. The holiday parade begins

at about 5:30 at the IGA and ends at the Village Green, where islanders gather for the tree lighting. Santa will stay in the Village Green this year so children can easily visit him. On Sunday they can stop by for a photo in Santa’s cottage at the Village Green. Throughout the weekend, merchants will also host the third annual gingerbread house tour, where visitors can vote for their favorite houses created by local businesses. There will be a road closure during Winterfest. Vashon Highway will close from Cove Road to 178th, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, as will Bank Road from 100th to 97th. Traffic and Metro buses will follow detour routes.

A documentary about the millions of Americans living in long-term recovery from alcohol and drug addiction will be shown at the Vashon Theatre this weekend, brought to the island by a woman who believes it has an important message. The film, called “The Anonymous People,” aims to remove some of the stigma and secrecy of addiction, transform public opinion about addiction and shift policy toward lasting solutions, according to the film’s website. Islander Pauline Richardson, who has family members who have struggled with addiction, decided to bring the film to the theater after seeing it last summer. “It gave me a sense of empowerment to bring it Vashon,” she said. The documentary follows recovering addicts from all walks of life — celebrities, public figures and ordinary citizens — living without drugs and alcohol, Richardson said, noting that islanders who struggle with addiction issues and their loved ones could benefit from seeing it. “They need to hear the message that long-term recovery is happening,” she said. “It’s a better slice of the age-old story.” The film tells people’s stories and celebrates them, she said, and also takes aim at the incarceration of addicts as a failed solution. Islander Stephen Bogan, a counselor who works with youth and adults who struggle with substance abuse and addiction, also saw the documentary last year as part of

a conference. Like Richardson, he said he appreciates its positive, affirming message. “It’s a really uplifting film,” he said. He noted that for many years, because of the stigma around addiction, it has been a tenet of 12-step programs that people must maintain anonymity. In some ways, Bogan said, it has become like a secret society, and those kinds of secrets can be harmful, help maintain the stigma and hinder those who would otherwise seek help. People can still keep confidences, Bogan said, but being frank about their own experiences will likely have benefits. “Let’s not confuse membership in 12-step groups and being open about being in recovery,” he said. “If you voice that and share that … more people will know what recovery looks like.” The film is not rooted in any treatment modality and does not espouse any theories, Bogan said. Instead it focuses on normal people in recovery. Following the film, Bogan and Richardson will co-facilitate a panel with a young woman in recovery and representatives from Al-Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous. Also on hand will be representatives from social service and support organizations who can provide further information. The documentary is traveling around the country through new online service called Gathr, which enables people to request their own screenings of a movie that might not otherwise come to their communities. To bring the film to Vashon, Bogan said 45 tickets had to be sold in advance. That goal has been met, he noted, with the Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Abuse (VARSA) purchasing several to give away, and tickets will also be available at the door. The film will be shown at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Vashon Threatre.

Turning into a teen: Welcome to the new age

Marijuana at K2 raises concerns, but makes sense

Our oldest boy turned 13 a couple of days ago. My wife Maria and I have heard that parenting teenagers can be pretty challenging. This is our first teenager, so we’re braced for the worst. I can report that so far, the first couple days have been OK. At the supper table he slouched in a stiff wooden chair, ensconced in a pair of impenetrable full-size green headphones that twitched in time to burping-contest bass notes, like window-rattling hiphop from some passing blackwindowed dope-mobile. He could get one side of those headphones to work if he jiggled the wire just right; the other side was toast. I could clearly make out Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” from across the table. At my insistence, he slowly and sullenly removed the headphones, asking petulantly why he couldn’t listen to music at his own birthday party, tossing in a gesture of incredulousness at the injustice. We barged ahead with singing Happy Birthday, like a brave band of cheerful temperance workers in a pre-Prohibition saloon, bringing in the sheaves. His youngest brother and sister blew out two candles that he missed, igniting a furious scrum and shouts of “Stooopp!” from all sides as they struggled around the Costco red velvet cake for a time. We clapped as he glared at his siblings through the smoke from the extinguished candles. Shards of white noise wafted from the green headphones vibrating toward the edge of the table, sounding like a dozen concrete blocks dragged slowly across blacktop. His younger brother, growing into his birthright as his older brother’s wingman, announced

It comes as no surprise that someone has applied for a license to grow marijuana at the K2 building. Aside from the fact that rumors on the topic have been swirling for months, it seems an ideal location for such an operation. The warehouse-like property where K2 once manufactured skis has ample room for both indoor and outdoor growing and is a steal for its size. Vashon is far enough from the city for growing to be a possibility, but close enough to quickly transport product to the mainland and the I-5 corridor. And while state law would require security measures at the operation, a business on Vashon would have far fewer While we have mixed security concerns than one in feelings about the island more urban area. We’re concerned such a business would change the face of our town and perhaps spur crime. However, as chamber director Jim Marsh said, the passage of I-502 created a new industry in the state, one where pot farms could eventually be as common as other types of farms. Several groups have had ideas for the K2 building — primarily for transforming into a multi-use site — but none have taken off. And the building, put on the market during the economic downturn, hasn’t drawn any other manufacturers. While we have mixed feelings about the island becoming known for its marijuana — and we’d certainly rather see K2 hold a community center and a bowling alley — we would like to see something come of the vacant building before it’s too old to restore to use. A large marijuana growing operation could create a multitude of good-paying local jobs and could help support other local businesses as well. But let’s not jump to conclusions, good or bad. An application is just that: an application. It doesn’t mean the building has been sold or leased, and it doesn’t mean Def Clown West — a company whose name alone has sparked confusion and speculation — will earn the state’s approval for its plan. We know a purchase of the K2 building would be complicated, zoning laws could come into play and a renovation of the giant structure would be costly. Def Clown has applied to have operations at at least two other locations, possibly because it is keeping its options open. Were it to choose Vashon, we hope the company would have the community’s interests in mind, but there’s no guarantee, as it is, after all, a business. Entrepreneurs are clamoring for a place in the modern-day gold rush that is legal marijuana sales. The reward for growing pot at K2 could be great for those involved, but the path there will be long. Until more happens, we’ll reserve judgement about Def Clown West.

FAMILY LIFE By KEVIN POTTINGER to the table busy cramming forkfuls of red velvet cake into their mouths, that his older brother does not eat cake. I insisted that he have at least one itsy tiny bite of his own birthday cake. He reluctantly swallowed a tiny shred of cake quickly with half a glass of water as if it were a gel-cap filled with boogers. After an exaggerated Quentin-Tarrantino-style slowmotion reaction shot of contorted grimacing, perhaps illustrating how even a small amount of cake affects Superman like Kryptonite, he tore into the pile of presents. First up was a brightly-colored recycled birthday bag from our youngest daughter, filled with wads of tissue paper adorned with hearts rendered in strawberryscented pencil with lots of notes and arrows and extra exclamation points. At the bottom of the bag he found a small picture frame in the shape of a basketball that he turned over and over in his hand as if it were a Golden Tablet of Mormon prophecy. He thanked his little sister in a croaking whisper, his eyes glistening. His next present was a pair of Dancing Water speakers that shot arcs of colored water in enclosed clear-plastic towers based on rhythmic changes in the music, much like those color organs from the 70s that flashed different colored lights based on the content of the music. We plugged them into his iPod and watched them

Childhood trauma

Recent study has little value Several thoughts came to mind on reading the Beachcomber story on childhood trauma (“History of childhood trauma high on Vashon,” Nov. 20). 1. Another study on whether traumatic events in

childhood have lifelong consequences is about as useful as exploring whether the sun rises in the East. 2. It is difficult to believe the credibility of data ranking 40 King County communities on the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences where Vashon ranks higher than White Center, Sea-Tac/Tukwila, Renton and Auburn.

squirt blue and red and green arcs inside the plastic towers, a sort of colored-pee organ. In stereo. He pronounced them cool. It seemed as if his dark mood might be lifting, for return of a few moments of golden sun. The last present was a pair of fancy headphones, the exact ones he asked for — the correct color, model and size, in an unwrapped box with a receipt from a big-box store taped to the top. He clawed impatiently at the packaging and fitted them together, hanging them on his ears and listening critically to the “Radioactive” song. He smiled radiantly and crowed, the new headphones still covering his ears, “THESE HEADPHONES SURE HAVE A LOT OF BASS.” His siblings clamored for a turn and fought for first in line to listen. He let his mom try them first; Maria shares a love of electronic dance music with the kids. He turned the music down a little and gently placed them over her ears. After several seconds she pulled them off gingerly, pronouncing them awesome. Everyone had a turn; when it was his turn, his little brother smeared some ketchup on them, causing several minutes’ delay while our birthday boy carefully swabbed the ketchup off of the ear piece with the proscribed damp, lint-free cloth. Lucky 13. As Imagine Dragons sings, “Welcome to the new age, to the new age, welcome to the new age, to the new age.” Becoming radioactive might be an interesting metaphor for growing into an adult. I’ll let you know if he starts glowing in the dark.

3. I hope the state official who delivered the report, who said she was “shocked (shocked!!!) when I saw the Vashon numbers,” has recovered. 4. It must have been a slow news week for The Beachcomber to run the shocking headline. I do not for a moment dispute the pervasive effects of childhood trauma. The factors that produce that trauma are well known: poverty, substance abuse, mental illness, domestic violence and inept parenting, among others. As they do everywhere, these conditions occur on Vashon. But surely not at shock-producing levels. Vashon is blessed in the number of individuals and organizations doing quality work to help children and families heal wounds from the past. The cycle of sexual abuse must be stopped Thank you for your clear and insightful article, “History of childhood trauma high on Vashon,” Nov. 20. Although sexual abuse in childhood was not specifically identified, it seems important to point out that in the ACEs study mentioned in the article, 25 percent of women and 16 percent of men in the study reported at least one experience with contact sexual abuse in childhood. Proportionately, these figures are staggering and consistent with

other measures of the incidence of child sexual abuse in the general public. As the director of Shepherd’s Counseling Services in Seattle, for the past 26 years, we have seen the life-altering consequences to adults who have been sexually abused in childhood. We have also seen the devastating effects of the stigma and silence that surround this particular form of trauma in childhood. As the difficult reality and the astounding prevalence of sexual abuse are acknowledged, more attention will be focused on prevention and intervention. As the article points out, the cycle of trauma must be curtailed in order to create safe and healthy communities. Certainly in regard to the trauma of child sexual abuse, the cycle will begin to end as we acknowledge the epidemic prevalence of this issue that exists in every community. — Janice M. The agency needs support I declare, with the deepest appreciation and gratitude, that Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) is the mental health and human services lifeline in our community. Lifeline? Without doubt. Within our community and our schools, we have experienced a magnitude of human crisis over the past few years that is unsurpassed in my 30 years in education. And, in each case, when I have received the emergency call of dev-

astating news during the day or night, my next call is to the director of VYFS. I know my first job is to provide a triage of support to our students and staff and then to continue to provide responsive care and intervention in the wake of the tragedy. Our partner is VYFS — immediately responsive with the highest quality service to provide safety, stability and compassionate counsel to support our school community. Interestingly, we regard VYFS as if it were our Vashon Island Fire & Rescue for the human soul. We expect that VYFS will respond to our 911 call for emergency support services — and they do — immediately. We anticipate that the service will be of the highest quality with expert leadership, highly trained crisis counselors and comprehensive services — and it is. We assume that when the crisis has passed that VYFS will stand beside us to review planning, determine necessary follow-up and to consider steps toward prevention — and they do. We treat VYFS as if it were a tax-funded agency that will always be there for us. In fact, VYFS has experienced drastic funding reductions during the recent recession, receives no tax funding and is more dependent upon our local support than ever before. We must adequately support our “911 for the human soul” so that it will always be there for us. Please consider joining me in making a monthly contribution to sustain Vashon’s health and human services lifeline.

One of Rotary International’s signature projects is “PolioPlus,” a campaign to eradicate polio from the face of the planet. Begun more than 30 years ago, PolioPlus, now working with the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has immunized more than 2 billion children worldwide. Polio has been reduced by 99.9% and is now endemic in only three countries. In immunizations, children who have received the vaccine have their fingers dipped in a purple dye, so immunization teams can tell who has received the vaccine and who hasn’t. Every year, for the last five years, Vashon Rotary has held a “Purple Pinkie” project with fifth graders at Chautauqua to raise awareness. For a dollar donation to PolioPlus, a student can have his or her finger colored. Two students, Kincaid Cummings and Eric Ormseth, along with Ethan McIntyre, Levi Moore, Meredith Pottinger and Flora Briggs, really wanted to help. They held a bake sale to raise money to help with the fight. Vashon Rotary was thrilled to receive a check from them for $335.00. These inspiring students have made it possible for 1,000 children to be immunized! We want the entire community to know how grateful and proud we are for their gift. Thanks guys! Christmas garland is hung with care On Sunday, November 24, with Tom Langland at the helm, the downtown core merchants and the Vashon Chamber got together and put garland up around town. I’m guessing there was more than 30 folks, including some teenagers, spending time to help our fair town out and spread the Christmas cheer to all of us on the

island. This spirit of giving to the community is one of the many things that makes our island community special. There was a food party around 1pm at the Chamber’s office where all of the volunteers enjoyed many soups and hearty chilis and shared the war stories of the day (ha, not really). Speeding

Cameras are needed to slow drivers down Since I came to our house on Vashon Highway in 1965, the speeding has never stopped. Nasty tempered drivers doing 50, 60, 70 miles per hours and more up and down this 22-foot wide road like it’s a freeway. Traffic at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 a.m. in a hurry to get to work. Then again at 3:30, 4:30, 5:30 p.m. in a hurry to get home. Thousands in a hurry to catch the ferry and racing home all day long, 24-7 the revving, squealing and honking never stops. It’s so dangerous you have to run across the street, and I see cyclists in dangerous situations every day. Hundreds of deer get maimed or killed every year, and you see all the other animals getting slaughtered. The cops give out a pitiful few tickets. It’s a joke. Get serious. Make a statement with speeding tax tickets. I would like to see speed enforcement cameras here, 24-7, both ways so at least it will cost them all a speeding tax. Making up time on the road by speeding is much too common, has too many bad consequences and should be seriously addressed. Cameras will do it. I will be much happier; the cyclists will be much safer and the animals along the road will too.

We’re getting ready to put the house on the market due to a job transfer. We’re leaving Vashon and this area reluctantly and want to have one last holiday season in the house with our extended family. How can we manage that? I can’t imagine buyers coming to see the house during the holidays but if they do, how can we keep the place looking good and have our holiday decorations, etc?

A:

I can assure you that there are buyers all through the winter. I encourage folks to look in the winter because they can see the property when all the landscaping is dormant rather than be dazzled by the landscaping. I also know that the sellers who are on the market through the holidays are usually very motivated. I would suggest that you minimize your holiday decorations and displays. You’re moving anyway so just put out a few of your special things. That keeps holiday items from becoming a distraction to buyers. Minimize or forget yard decorations. Lights are always nice in the darker months so if you have them up and ready to go that’s great. We are lucky to live in such a safe community but it’s always a good idea to lock up valuables while your house is for sale. That means money, jewelry, expensive collectables, and drugs. I would add holiday gifts to that list too. Bring them out for your family get together but keep them out of sight before the festivities. Your listing agent will make some suggestions that will be helpful too, I’m sure. Holiday cookies out on a plate are a welcome sight to potential buyers. I recall a lovely lady who put out home backed cookies and fresh coffee for every showing. I always had at least one cookie so that her feelings wouldn’t be hurt. (Yes, I’m being funny) I noticed that buyers would spend more time in that house. But you don’t have to go to that much trouble. Just keep the place as neat as possible and be ready to show as quickly as possible.

For the first time, Vashon High School is participating in the Poetry Out Loud competition, a national contest that encourages youth to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation. As part of the contest, which is put on by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, high schoolers memorize and recite poems from a wide-ranging list and can compete with their peers to advance in the competition. A school winner will be announced in January. Last week, high schoolers in Anders Blomgren’s American Lit class recited poems in front of their classmates and several school administrators acting as judges. Some who wished to participate in the contest recited poems solo, while others formed groups to recite poems for the assignment. In all, Blomgren said, about 100 VHS students from different classes will enter the contest. A final round of the school-wide competition will be held in January, and a school winner will move on to a regional competition for a chance to compete in the state and possibly national contests. Show pays homage to a British composer

Seattle’s Fremont Troll heads to the silver screen

Embracing the season and bringing the year to an end on a joyful note, the Vashon Island Chorale will offer two performances of British composer Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols.” The choice of this work has a special significance as 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of Britten’s birth. “Britten was the greatest chorale composer of the last century,” said Garry Cannon, the chorale’s artistic director. “It was the logical choice for this holiday season.” Britten, a dedicated pacifist, was in New York City when World War II broke out. Though he remained in America for three years, hesitant to return home and be conscripted, homesickness eventually overtook him, and in 1942 he boarded a ship to cross the Atlantic back to England. At a stop in Nova Scotia, Britten purchased a book of medieval Christmas poems to keep himself occupied on the journey. He composed “Ceremony of Carols” while still on the ship after reading the poems. “It’s such an upbeat, happy and celebratory piece,” Cannon said. “It has been a mainstay of choral programs across the world since its premiere in 1943.”

Cannon calls the music “upheat, happy and celebratory.” The chorale’s holiday offering will also include several traditional Christmas carols for choir with harp and flute, featuring two of the area’s most prominent musicians: harpist Juliet Stratton and flutist Susan Telford Boyd. Cannon noted that this combination of instruments and choir is a tricky one. “It’s very hard to balance a 70-plus voice choir with one harp, but we have figured out ways to make it work,” he said. Soon to begin its 25th year, the chorale is comprised of 70 to 80 un-auditioned voices. Cannon, who has been its artistic director since 2008, pointed out that the choir includes

a range of ability levels, from professional singers to some who haven’t sung a note in 50 years. “Anyone who wants to sing can join,” he said. “If it brings you joy, you’re welcome to be a part of it.” The Vashon Island Chorale will perform “Ceremony of Carols” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Bethel Church. Tickets cost $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and students, and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or at the door, if still available.

This Friday the Vashon Film Society will screen a locally made documentary about the famed Fremont Troll public art sculpture. The show is part of the society’s monthly series of First Friday Art Films at the Vashon Theatre. “The Hall of Giants” explores the creation and endurance of the Fremont Troll, a sculpture that sits under the bridge’s north end and ranks second only to the Space Needle as a beloved city icon for many. In 2012, the film’s director Michael Falcone won a Seattle CityArtist Grant and used the funds to hire Vashon-based editor James Culbertson to polish the rough film. The two then developed it into a 90-minute documentary. The film will be shown at 9:30 Friday at the Vashon Theatre.

Classic Christmas ballet comes to life this weekend in ‘The Nutcracker’ By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

Vashon will take part in a longtime holiday tradition with the opening of “The Nutcracker” this weekend. The classic tale is the most performed ballet in history and inaugurates the holiday season for families across the country. On Vashon, 83 dancers from kindergartners through adults will take to the stage in the classic tale of a young girl, Clara, and her Christmas Eve dream, where toys and other objects come to life and good overcomes evil. Dancers from the Vashon Allied Arts Center for Dance will put on this show, the 14th Nutcracker production that Christine Juarez, the director of the dance company, has led. The ballet is a rite of passage for dancers everywhere, she said, and they anticipate learning the roles every year. Although Juarez has been part of The Nutcracker since she was 16, she said she never tires of it. in their new roles for the year. This ballet is such an important part of a dancer’s career,” she said. Some of the highlights of this year’s show, she noted, are the Russian, Chinese and Spanish dances, which have been re-choreographed. Also, she said, senior Meg Sayre is performing her final “Nutcracker” as both the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Partnering with her is Cornish College senior Sam Opsal as the Snow Prince and Cavalier. Sayre began dancing with the school as a third-grader, Juarez said, and Opsal began performing with a troop as a college freshman, so this will be the end of an era. “The two are going out on their senior Nutcracker,” Juarez said. The most notable change this year will be the performance venue: the Open Space for Arts & Community. The school theater was not available because of construction, and several people have been working hard to turn the big hall into a dance venue to support the show’s large cast, Juarez said. Performing the show there means the cast and volunteers can spread out

a bit more, she said, and they plan to feature a lobby sweet shop, selling candies, waffles and hot chocolate. Wine will also be for sale. To add to the holiday feeling of the show, cast members of “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown,” directed by Marita Erickson, will sing Christmas songs 15 minutes before the Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday matinee shows. On Saturday night, Adam Stern, music director of the Seattle Philharmonic will give a lecture about his years directing Tchaikovsky’s signature musical score in “The Nutcracker.”

Shows will be 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. An abbreviated children’s matinee will be at 1 p.m. Friday, and Adam Stern’s presentation will be 5:45 p.m. Saturday with a wine and cheese reception. Not only is this weekend the beginning of the Holiday Art Studio Tour, but islanders can begin their art perusing by taking to town Friday evening for the First Friday gallery cruise. Bergamot Studio will feature several Vashon artists working within the theme of contrast, specifically between vermillion red and turquoise blue. Raven’s Nest will present a collection of Northwest Coast Native art and gifts for the holiday season. Tlingit Artist Autumn Shotridge will offer sealskin, beaver and sea otter medicine pouches and other items trimmed with beadwork. Art demonstrations by Shotridge will be scheduled throughout the month of December. Sue Shotridge will present a variety of new jewelry options. Israel Shotridge will be available to personalize any of his current art prints exhibited at Raven’s Nest and will have a collection of his hand engraved jewelry on display. Pottery by Abraham McBride will be on display at Starving Artist Works (SAW). Two Wall Gallery in the will have a holiday show of shop artists where shops in the Wallflower Building will all contribute. VALISE Gallery will show a member’s exhibition called “Paper.” VALISE members will exhibit a collection of works exploring paper. Drawn to the tactile, visual, historic

qualities and simple familiarity of this material, the members have created affordable, accessible works of art on or about paper. “Watercolor Fantasies” by Wendra Lynne, a member of the Art Directors Guild for Film and Television, will be shown at the Vashon Senior Center. The baked potato bar will be open. Jessika Satori will have a collection of abstract paintings at Vashon Intuitive Arts. Satori, known for film directing and producing, has been painting for most of her life. Her show, titled “Abstracts,” will include several paintings and a special exhibit on Friday during the artist’s reception. Pieces created by island artists will adorn the walls and floor of the Vashon Allied Arts Gallery for its annual “Masters in Miniature” show. Forty-seven artists will participate, the most the show has ever seen in its seven-year history. While style, medium and subject run the artistic gamut, the works all share common ground in one specific category: size. Miniature Show 2D and 3D pieces are all just inches wide.

Island art studios open for annual holiday tour By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

Island artists will open their doors the first two weekends of December for the annual Holiday Art Studio Tour. This self-guided tour, part of a long tradition on Vashon, will include more than 150 artists at 45 studios and galleries across the island. Maps will help tour guests explore the wide range of art created on the island, much of it available to purchase. As always, a wide range of techniques, processes and materials will be represented, including folk art, wooden walking sticks, jewelry, stained glass and more. Participating artists include some fairly new to the tour, such as Ken Judd, who finds and repurposes items into folk art objects, and stalwarts of the tour, such as tile artist Irene Otis, one of the artists who helped create the first tour more than 30 years ago. The wide diversity of participating studios will provide a variety of experiences, organizers say, and will include the historic Beall greenhouses, where basalt sculptor Tony Kaufman of 3000BC Studios works

STEP OUT FOR A SHOW DJ Whitmore brings his beats to Nirvana DJ Whitmore, an acoustic multi-instrumentalist, writer, occasional actor, raconteur and very often a DJ, will perform at Nirvana on Friday. Whitmore’s credits include a NEA Composers Grant, three solo CDs, plus several dozen album and soundtrack appearances. Also, having worked in the best record stores up and down the West Coast, he has collected several thousand LPs and 45s. Whitmore is one of two DJs that hosts Vashon’s monthly dance nights at the Open Space and he can be seen on any given First Friday hovering over a couple of turntables at either the Heron’s Nest or Snapdragon. A troupe of innovative island artists will leave the rock next weekend to perform its biggest show ever in Seattle. “Lelavision’s Heavy Metal DëVices,” an expanded version of a show that was put on at the Open Space for Arts & Community last year, will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Moore Theatre, 1932 2nd Ave. in Seattle. The show — a high-energy creative melange of singing, tumbling, strumming, leaping and drumming — combines kinetic musical sculptures and physical antics created by Lelavision’s founders, Ela Lamblin and Leah Mann. Island composer Jason Staczek has created a wall of sound and melody for the show, which also features Vashon performers, including Abby Enson, Lynelle Sjoberg, Artlette Moody and Christopher Overstreet. worth of tools. More significantly, Singer lost the centerpiece of the 40-acre farm: a 40-by-60 metal clad structure his father built in the mid-1940s and that he recently upgraded by adding a floor. The barn was the place he began each work day, Singer said, and a place that stored decades of tools he and his family accumulated, including carpentry tools, equipment he used on the farm and custom tools he manufactured years ago to meet his needs. He lost a cider press built in the 1930s or 40s that he called “the best one I ever had” and that his family still used to press apples each fall. “It takes a while to sink in. … Everything I had was here,” he said. “Some of the tools I had they don’t even make anymore,” he said. While Singer is retired, he still maintains Singer Farm, located on Singer Road, which was named after his family. He keeps about a dozen head of cattle and boards several horses, and proceeds from the farm have helped pay for another parcel he recently added. George, who boards her horse at Singer Farm and calls Singer a “formative person” in many people’s lives, said the large barn had become a gathering place of sorts.

Kayak center asks for return of life vests With its first summer season behind it, Vashon Watersports has determined several life vests are missing. Doug Kieper, co-owner of the business, said they are short eight red, blue or yellow personal flotation devices, all made by Stohlquist.

He does not believe they were stolen, he said, but perhaps loaned out and not returned “We’re not sure what happened to them, but we’re trying to scrounge them up,� he said. Kieper stressed the importance of wearing them on Puget Sound. “I would rather lend them for free than see a family go out without life jackets,� he said. “The thing about the book and Ed’s work,� Smith said, “is that there’s almost nothing like it for an environment of our scale.� Smith, who used to manage clean water programs for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is deeply impressed by what Swan has accomplished. “If we were like Japan and designated people as national treasures, we would designate Ed either an Audubon treasure or a Vashon Island treasure.� Swan, 51, likely wouldn’t count himself a local treasure. A bespectacled man with a quiet, bookish manner, he quickly dismisses the notion that he has a regional reputation for his contribution to ornithology or a following much beyond the island. He’s a self-taught birder, a political science major from Whitman College and the stayat-home parent of two adolescent boys. His first book sold quickly, he believes, because its publishing fortuitously coincided with the start of Alan Huggins’ popular birding classes on the island. As Huggins launched one class after another, eager birders — many of them new to the fold — not only snatched up Swan’s book but also began to contact Swan with their sightings, noting their observations and participating in regional bird counts. Swan says his new book benefits from this growing interest in Vashon’s avian life. But it also benefits from who Swan is, Huggins and Smith noted — a meticulous man and expert birder who has assiduously built a database of sightings he and Vashon’s many other birders have made over the past decade. books that bespeak his passion — decades’ worth of local Audubon magazines, arranged chronologically, regional natural history books, countless bird guides and the first volume ever published about birds in the region, W.L. Dawson’s 1909 “The Birds of Washington State.� Swan is pleased by what he’s been able to capture in the second edition of “The Birds of Vashon Island.� His first book was based on data 15 years old at the time; this one is based on data six to seven years old. The Christmas bird count was still somewhat recent when he published in 2005; this time, he’s had 15 years’ worth of Christmas count data to incorporate. It’s not a field guide, he notes, nor is it a picture book. Like his first edition, it’s a companion to a field guide — a book that tells stories about what’s here and why. This time around, though, he doesn’t expect it to sell out in a matter of months. He’s printed 2,000 books, a lot, he figures, on an island of 11,000. “I’ll have this one for several years,� he predicted. Huggins, however, thinks this edition — like his first — will sell quickly, in large part because of Swan’s reputation as a regional expert. “Ed’s contributions to our knowledge and enjoyment of birds on Vashon have been astounding,� he said. — Leslie Brown is the former editor of The Beachcomber. She works at the King County Department of Public Defense.

Zeke is a millennium cat born in the year 2000. When he first came to the shelter Zeke was shy and unsure of the volunteers. You wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that now. This guy is one gentle loving cat. His former owners had allergies so Zeke spent his years in a garage. Now, Zeke is looking for a home where he can spend time on the couch and in a lap. Zeke gets along with other cats but he is not so sure about dogs.
