With two temporary funding measures set to expire in the next year, King County Metro is once again faced with the possibility of fairly severe cuts to its service hours. According to Metro, if a stable funding source is not figured out in the near future, 74 of Metro’s 214 routes would be eliminated, while 107 routes would be reduced or revised. For Federal Way residents, the possibility of these cuts is a cause for concern because many rely on Metro and other regional transit services to get around. A handful of Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) officials recently traveled to Michigan and Ghana on “study missions.” The trip to Ghana was part of the school district’s partnership with Free the Children, which encourages students to perform local and global service projects. Four local educators visited the West African nation from Nov. 2-11. As required by the program, the trip’s purpose was to screen locations in Ghana for safety before Federal Way students embarked on

future service projects. Vince Blauser, executive director of secondary schools, was joined by Todd Beamer High School Principal Joni Hall, Decatur High School Principal David Brower, and TAF Academy Dean of Students Ryan Preis. The four educators helped build and paint schools in villages, all while looking for “transformative” opportunities for Federal Way students, Blauser said. Driver arrested in truck rollover on I-5 Mirror staff reports
The driver in a one-car crash was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault. Washington State Patrol reports that the accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. Nov. 17 on southbound I-5 near South 288th Street in Federal Way. A Ford F350 truck was traveling on I-5 when it struck and crashed through the
www.federalwaymirror.com left-side guardrail, rolled off the freeway and came to rest at South 288th Street. Troopers at first thought the crash was a hit-and-run. Troopers initially found two occupants trapped in the truck, and believed the driver had fled on foot. However, state patrol says the driver attempted to deceive officers at the scene by telling them another person was driving. The vehicle’s owner, a 43-year-old male, was arrested on investigation of vehicular assault and DUI. The injured passenger, a 25-year-old female, was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Birth to Three Developmental Center, a non-profit organization located at 35535 6th Place SW in Federal Way, focuses on helping infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities, and their families. The center’s executive director, Maryanne Barnes, gave a brief presentation to the Federal Way City Council about the center’s efforts in Federal Way and beyond. “Birth to Three serves a great number of children,” Barnes said at the council’s Nov. 19 meeting. “We served 635 children last year. Last year, 288 of our children and families were from the Federal Way school district…231 of our kids lived in the city of Federal Way.” Outside of Federal Way, Birth to Three also serves clients in South King County and North Pierce County, Barnes noted. Birth to Three, which receives funding from the city’s Human Services department, is experiencing growth in these difficult times, Barnes said. “So far, year-to-date, we have experienced a 15 percent growth,” she said. “We provide services for infants and toddlers who have developmental delays and disabilities, and support services for families.”

COURTESY PHOTO Barnes shared a letter from one of their client families, a family with a baby boy named Jack who was born with a cleft lip and palate. Thanks to Birth to Three, Jack’s life has steadily improved in recent years. “There were many days and nights where my husband and I feared for Jack’s health and happiness,” the letter said. “He was constantly getting hurt from lack of physical strength and balance. He screamed for hours because we didn’t know how to communicate or soothe him as effectively as he desired. We enrolled in Birth to Three’s physical, occupational and speech therapy services when Jack was six months old.” The letter touched on the fact that the family is supported only by the
father’s income, and that Jack’s physical issues had accrued a vast amount of medical bills. Birth to Three was able to help in a variety of ways, according to the mother. “We will be forever grateful to Birth to Three and all their financial support that they provided so families like ours can receive the gift of hope for the future,” Barnes continued, reading from the mother’s letter. “That is the greatest note I think I can share with you. I’m grateful for your support, and the families of Federal Way thank you.” Mayor Skip Priest returned the kindness, saying organizations like Birth to Three help make Federal Way a better place. “This is a community that believes ‘All means all.’”

Police Blotter Following is a sample from the Federal Way police log: • Sleeping man at restaurant: At 4:32 a.m. Nov. 17 in the 2100 block of South 320th Street, employees of a restaurant reported there was a man sleeping in the restaurant, and that the man was being uncooperative when employees asked him to leave. Upon police arrival, the man remained uncooperative and was eventually arrested. According to the report, the man gave a false name repeatedly, in an effort to hide the fact that he had an active Department of Corrections escape warrant. • Woman assaulted and threatened: At 11:48 a.m. Nov.
17 in the 37000 block of 20th Avenue South, a woman reported that an unknown male entered her residence without permission and punched her in the face. According to the report, the woman said the man told her to not cooperate with an active sexual assault case she is involved with from several years ago. • Neighbor troubles: At 3:35 p.m. Nov. 16 in the 600 block of SW 321st Street, a woman reported that her neighbor threatened her and her family while brandishing what appeared to be a rifle. According to the report, the argument was over parking. The report notes the neighbor was contacted and arrested, and that the rifle he had been holding was in fact a BB gun. • Unusual method of entry: At 10:56 p.m. Nov. 17 in the 30000 block of Pacific Highway South, a business reported that unknown
suspects had gained entry and burglarized the business and stole several items. According to the report, the unknown suspects gained entry through a shed attached to the business. Once in the shed, the suspects broke through drywall to gain access to the interior of the business. • Bicycles stolen: At 9:49 p.m. Nov. 17 in the 3000 block of South 288th Street, a woman reported that unknown suspects stole three bicycles from her front porch. • Man flees hit-and-run: At 4:17 a.m. Nov. 16 in the 2400 block of South 298th Street, a man was arrested after fleeing a hit-and-run scene. According to the report, the man hit a parked car and then fled on foot. • Door breaker arrested: At 8:05 a.m. Nov. 16 in the 1600 block of South 324th Street, a man was arrested for shattering the glass

While working from home, Carla Ackley also keeps an eye on her Federal Way neighborhood. No one has anointed her as the neighborhood’s official watchdog — yet. “I just don’t like criminals,” said Ackley, whose blog led to the arrest of two serial burglars in 2012. Her latest post at federalwaywa.blogspot.com concerns a recent burglary at her neighbor’s home. In the morning or early afternoon of Nov. 18, burglars targeted the home in the 2700 block of South 282nd Street. The culprits smashed the sliding glass door for entry, then ransacked an upstairs bedroom, according to a police report. The burglars stole two laptop computers and a wallet with cash that belonged to the victim’s daughter. The loss was esti-
mated at more than $1,300. The computers contained the girl’s homework and personal photos. However, left behind were other pawn shop worthy items such as jewelry, a digital camera and a handheld gaming device. Ackley told police she had seen a gold-colored Ford Taurus driving slowly through the neighborhood. The car was a mid-90s model with a clothes hanger for an antenna. Another neighbor reported seeing a suspicious tan car in the area. Federal Way police are investigating. “My dog barked and I looked outside,” Ackley said about the suspicious car catching her attention. “I’m really sorry I didn’t actually see it going on.” In 2012, Federal Way Police Chief Brian Wilson said the arrest of two alleged serial burglars caused a dramatic drop in burglaries citywide. On her blog, Ackley had posted photos of a
suspicious woman in the neighborhood. The photos helped police identify two suspects who were wanted on burglary warrants in Spokane. Ackley works full-time from home and doesn’t spend all day watching out the window. “But if I see something that looks suspicious, I’m going to look into it,” she said, noting that the neighborhood’s location off Military Road attracts a lot of traffic and may contribute to burglaries. Most burglaries occur during the day and are typically committed by juveniles, according to police. Most thefts target vehicles, and most of the time, the suspects are looking for quick and easy thefts. In September 2013, Federal Way police reported that residential burglaries were down by 31 percent compared to 2012. The same report noted that commercial burglaries went

According to police, the family member who wanted to drive has Alzheimer’s, and had accidentally found a set of keys for one of the family’s vehicles. • Storage unit raid: At 10:46 a.m. Nov. 16 in the 32000 block of Pacific Highway South, it was reported that nine units at a storage facility had been broken into by unknown suspects. • Thief takes money from business: At 11:10 a.m. Nov. 16 in the 29000 block of Pacific Highway South, an unknown suspect gained entry into an employees-only area of a business and stole approximately $1,500 in cash.

Should city’s voters decide on the PACC? There are people who would like to see the proposed Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC) put up to a vote of the people. I have two points to make in regards to this idea. First, we have a representative form of government. The Federal Way City Council members who we elected have access to the most information and are expected to dig into the details of a project such as the PACC. They have regular public
Ode to the best and brightest The anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death caused me to reflect on his expectations that the “best and brightest” should serve their government. Many current and former officials of both political parties felt called to serve by JFK’s words. As one who has been part of the political environment for more than 40 years and worked at the city, state and county level, I offer my own nominees for the “best and brightest” I worked with or saw up close. However, I will not include anyone who currently serves in elected office. They shouldn’t get blamed because I think they are talented. Also, I want to retain the option to be critical of them in the future. I did include a small number of current appointed staff. Lastly, I’m sure I have left out some worthy official who deserves to be on the list, and for that I apologize. Best governors: Dan Evans, Booth Gardner, John Spellman, Gary Locke, Christine Gregoire. You don’t have to agree with their politics to appreciate how talented and committed to good government these leaders were. Best city managers: Dick Thompson, great career started in Puyallup; Ray Corpuz, Tacoma, and a difficult departure shouldn’t detract from his rebuilding the City Of Destiny; David Moseley and Ken Nyberg, who led Federal Way through some difficult growing pains; Phil Kushlan, Bellevue, who is responsible for much of what Bellevue has become. Best strong mayors: Charley Royer, Seattle, three terms, and a national leader; Norm Rice, Seattle, “Mayor nice” who got things done; Bob Anderson, Everett, who brought
people together; Barbara Shinpoch, Renton, very sharp mind behind that humble exterior, great mentor, called her “mom;” Isabel Hogan, Kent, quiet almost invisible behind the scenes, but very firm hand on the tiller; A.J. Culver, Issaquah, started the modernization of his town; Tim Douglas, Bellingham, would have been successful anywhere. Most charismatic: Charley Royer and Booth Gardner. Royer was better with a crowd, but Gardner was better one on one. Best wit: Barbara Shinpoch. When Barbara opened a sentence with “I’m just a house wife, but…,” it was going to be funny and you would be reminded how smart she was. Booth Gardner had great stories. Seattle City Councilmember Cheryl Chow, who once tried to get me to trade a Nordstrom’s dessert for a regional transportation plan. King County Councilmember Paul Barden, from Federal Way, who wanted to trade a banana cream pie for some unincorporated land between Auburn and Federal Way. I said no. The area is now in Auburn, which is what I wanted. Of course, had I known I would be living in Federal Way 20 years later, maybe I would have agreed. That pie sure looked good. And former school superintendent Tom Murphy, who lived in that area, would have been elected mayor of Federal Way three years ago and the city’s history would be different. Best council policy leaders: Terry Lukens, Bellevue, smart and creative; Mary Gates, Federal Way, brought reasoned South King County perspectives and was persuasive; Lynn Carmichael, Yakima, well liked and could find the [ more ROEGNER, page 6 ] Bob Roegner

Federal Way Public Schools have a graduation problem, and Superintendent Rob Neu has promised to fix it. In August, Neu promised that 100 percent of students from this year’s freshman class will graduate on time. His bold vision will focus on black, Hispanic and Native American students. Federal Way pays Neu big bucks ($240,000 a year after a recent 20 percent raise) to lead the school district. Neu is sticking his neck on the line with this promise, and the community should give him a chance to fulfill that promise. Is this an impossible promise to keep? Yes. Is this a promise worth chasing? Yes. The district will focus on minority students with traditionally low “on-time” graduation rates. The overall class of 2012 rate was 70.2 percent. Here’s a breakdown of that 2012 rate by ethnicity: • Pacific Islanders (54.2 percent) • Hispanics (57.7 percent) • Blacks (61.5 percent) • Asians (79.5 percent) • Whites (76.1 percent) In comparison, the overall graduation for 2009 was 75.6 percent. In a recent meeting with The Mirror’s editorial board, Neu reiterated his “100 percent” promise and said the “low bar” was for these groups to reduce the graduation gap by half. For example, if 54 percent of Pacific Islanders graduated in 2012, the ideal minimum for 2016 is 77 percent. Indeed, achieving these metrics would be monumental for Federal Way schools. It would fall short of Neu’s “shoot for the moon” goal, but it would mark a significant improvement for the district. Isn’t that what we all want? Recent controversies have shaken public confidence in the school district — including a flawed grading system, a school board president’s arrest, a hefty raise for the superintendent, and multiple international taxpayer-funded trips related to the “Global Learning Intiative.” It’s easy to lump these controversies into one overall feeling of frustration and disappointment with the school district. The superintendent now has the burden of showing the public whether the district can live up to a big promise. Let’s allow the superintendent to lead the local education machine and rescue children who fall through the cracks. Let the district try to succeed in adequately preparing more students for college and the real world. Neu is willing to accept responsibility if he falls short. The school board must hold the superintendent accountable if there is no progress.

meetings to hear our input, but ultimately, they have the responsibility to make this decision. Second, the people often do not make the best decisions. In 1889, the people of Paris hated the idea of the Eiffel Tower. It was considered “monstrous” and “useless.” If it had been put to a vote, it would have been rejected. Today, it is considered the defining icon of the city
and has paid for itself many times over. Closer to home in 1995, the voters of King County voted against Safeco Field. If Safeco had not been built, would CenturyLink Field, home of the Seahawks and Sounders, have been built? Did anyone anticipate that CenturyLink Field would become the home of a highly successful soccer franchise?
Also in 1995, the people of Federal Way voted against Celebration Park. Celebration Park is a valuable asset for our city, as are other facilities like the King County Aquatic Center, the Federal Way Community Center and Dumas Bay Centre. They add to our “quality of life,” making Federal Way a better place. Without facilities like these, our community is not as attractive to businesses and people. Let our representative city government work as intended and do its job.

Angela Davis is the wrong kind of speaker for FW Is Angela Davis really the right type of speaker for Federal Way? We have a unique opportunity here in Federal Way to embrace and appreciate the ethnic and cultural diversities of people from all around the world. I love diversity and have spent a good part of my life investigating the cultures, religions and lives of people everywhere. When in Europe in 1967, I had the opportunity to go behind the iron curtain into East Berlin, before the wall was taken down. I was amazed at the differences in the two Berlins. West Berlin was full of life and color. East Berlin was gray and black everywhere...and lifeless. As I later visited other countries and met thousands of students immigrating to America during my years of teaching, one thing has be-

Q: It seems like every 5K race nowadays has a weird theme to it. Why? A: Because most Americans are super lazy and need to have some type of gimmick to get off their couches and actually exercise. It is pretty amazing just how strange organizers are getting with their themes to draw in runners. The Color Run has become so popular in Seattle that it sells out before the actual race day. It’s where volunteers throw colored dust on the runners throughout the race. Zombie runs are also all the rage right now, as are “mudders.” Zombie races include runners fitted with flags and makeup-clad volunteers dressed like zombies, attempting to steal those flags. Mud runs are pretty self-explanatory. You run through actual mud. Doesn’t sound like Mr. Federal Way’s cup of tea. But, to each their own. There’s even 5K races that incorporate America’s penchant for over-eating. The Krispy Kreme Challenge calls for participants to run half the race, eat a dozen doughnuts, then run the other half. After seven-plus years as editor of the Federal Way Mirror, I have accepted another job as a reporter for The Olympian. Today is my last day in Federal Way. It’s been a fun ride, and I look forward to the next phase of my career. A community leader recently asked what I thought had changed in Federal Way during the past seven and a half years. The question caught me off-guard because I’m usually the one who asks the questions. Off the cuff, I answered “nothing,” which is partly true, but deserves a deeper explanation. The people of Federal Way are just as kind as when I first arrived. I hope that never changes. Federal Way remains politically, socially and economically diverse — even after the housing market crashed and the Great Recession took its pound of flesh. Businesses opened, closed and left. Overall, downtown Federal Way still looks like downtown Federal Way. One noticeable change is the increase in suburban poverty. The problem exists nationwide, and Federal Way is a poster child. Service agencies work harder today to help bridge the socioeconomic gaps for this demographic. One obvious physical change is the Triangle Project, where I-5 meets SR 18 and SR 161. This project has boosted safety and efficiency at one of the state’s busiest interchanges. The biggest municipal change? The new form of government in Federal Way. Citizens like the idea of electing their mayor. Seven years ago, the so-called establishment opposed such a change. Critics feared that a directly elected mayor would lead to corruption and devastation. Two mayoral elections later, the former system of government is a fading footnote. Statistically, the population grew by a few thousand people, but annex-happy neighbors like Kent and Renton knocked Federal Way out of the state’s top 10 largest cities. The school board still makes headlines. Seven years ago, the board caught heat for banning Al Gore’s global warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” Today, the school board sits in the hot seat over international trips, a complicated grading system, a board member’s legal troubles and a superintendent’s pay raise. Another thing that hasn’t changed: a small group of citizens is still pushing to build a performing arts center. As far as politics, Federal Way felt slightly more conservative seven years ago. Perhaps the scales tilted toward Democrats in recent elections. Overall, the city still has a healthy mix of viewpoints. Back to the main premise — what has changed in Federal Way? Perhaps the better question is, what hasn’t changed? This relatively young city occupies the same real estate in South King County. The movers and shakers still move and shake city life. Federal Way still struggles with its image and identity in the region. Fortunately, several citizens still believe they can harness Federal Way’s infinite potential and act as a catalyst for positive change. These people need to be cloned. Moving forward, The Mirror will maintain its commitment to sharing ideas and information while encouraging public discussion. It has been a privilege to work in Federal Way, and your newspaper is in good hands. Please know that I poured my heart and soul into this job, and I did it all for the readers. teachers who go to work every day at schools around the district must be thinking about what is going on? Mr. Federal Way feels the most sympathy for the teachers. Mr. Federal Way can’t even imagine the extra hours these teachers have devoted toward the implementation of three new grading systems in the past three years. And just like the corporate world, talented employees go where they can be more successful, which is what Mr. Federal Way fears with the teachers here. The good teachers want to teach. They don’t want to learn how to input a new grading system each and every year, or watch their bosses take trips around the world. Support your kids’ teachers. They aren’t the ones to blame for this mess. Q: Mr. Federal Way, it’s not very fair that you don’t have to put your “real” name on your opinions, but The Mirror makes everyone who writes a letter to the editor sign their name and their hometown. Why don’t you? A: Short answer is that Mr. Federal Way doesn’t want to include Mr. Federal Way’s “real name.” Simple enough, right? As far as you know, Mr. Federal Way’s birth certificate lists Mr. Federal Way’s legal first name as “Mr.” and last name as “Federal Way.” If you would like to send your résumé, go through the extensive interview process and finally get hired by the newspaper, more power to you. Then, after you are put on the Federal Way Mirror’s payroll as Mr. Federal Way’s boss, you can decide whether to make Mr. Federal Way use Mr. Federal Way’s real name. But, until then, Mr. Federal Way will continue to not use Mr. Federal Way’s

Q: Mr. Federal Way, why do you keep picking on the school district? Didn’t your dad teach you not to hit a man when he’s down? A: Mr. Federal Way believes the term is “shooting fish in a barrel.” That’s exactly how easy it’s been for Mr. Federal Way lately to criticize the school district. It may seem like Mr. Federal Way is “piling on,” but the stuff Mr. Federal Way is writing about is important stuff, in Mr. Federal Way’s mind. Perception is everything. And the perception within Federal Way Public Schools right now is not real good, to put it lightly. But that’s just what happens when controversial decisions are made. People are now going over everything the school district does with a fine-tooth comb. In fact, last week it was revealed in The Mirror that four district employees made a trip to Ghana for the noblest of noble causes. The four educators helped build and paint schools in villages in the poverty-stricken country. But, those good deeds are being overshadowed by a lack of confidence in everything the district is doing. Posted on The Mirror’s website are comments like, “Brigadoon Elementary School needs paint too,” and “Ghana, really? I really think the kids in our school district need the money spent on them, not some ridiculous trip to Africa.” Taxpayers are fed up with things like the ultra-controversial standards-based grading system, all-expenses paid trips to Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America, and the school board’s lack of urgency to do anything about all the negativity. Something has to change, just to help with the public perception. Mr. Federal Way wonders what the

Paul Tanaka, Deputy King County Executive, fair and knew the county inside out, ran the county when Locke was running for governor; Tom Fitzsimmons, Assistant King County Executive, smart, tough negotiator; Martha Choe, Seattle, velvet glove, very hard to say no to, and now works for Bill Gates. There are many other elected and appointed government officials who work hard every day to make sure government runs well. It takes talent to be successful in government, which isn’t as easy as you think it is. Be sure and thank them.

...obituaries Josephine “Josie” Antoinette McKAY
Our angel has passed away, in the loving arms of her husband, Henry, and surrounded by the love of her family, on November 4th, 2013, just 8 days before her 87th birthday. Josie was born on the big island of Hawaii on November 13, 1926. She was the 7th of 10 children to Tony and Cozy Texeira. Of the 10 children, the first was a boy, then 9 girls in a row. Josie was born 6th in the female line. She graduated from Hono pah kah High School on the island of Hawaii in 1935. She left the family home at age 16 and began working in a local retail store when she was swept off her feet by the love of her life, Henry McKay, a sailor in the United States Navy. Like a fragrance to a rose, they were inseparable for a blessed 64 years thereafter. Josie brought four souls into this world, all sons of Henry. Josie was an outstanding and exemplary mother, not only to her own children but also to the many friends and neighborhood children that adopted her as their own, for many years. She excelled in the art of cutlery, working in cooking boutiques and producing her own recipes under the name of “Jo-Toni Hawaiian recipes”. She dedicated her entire life to raising her family and was profoundly strict in guiding them through the turmoils of life. Josie was preceded in death by her brother, Tony, and her sisters, Margaret, Sue, Olivia, Lorain, Tilly, and Jane, who passed away on the same day as Josie. She is survived by: her adoring husband Henry; two sisters: Helen and Clara; Sons: James, Jeffrey, Robert and Jerry; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Josie’s life has been held at the Bonney-Watson Funeral Home located at 1535 SW Dash Point Road. in Federal Way. WA. 98003. Lorraine Patricia Spencer Lorraine Spencer passed away peacefully at home on November 14, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 31, 1932, she spent most of her early years in North Attleboro, MA where she attended high school and met her husband of 58 years, Alan Spencer. Lorraine went on to study at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro and became a Registered Nurse. Lorraine and Alan married in 1955, settled in the Federal Way area and raised four children, Keith (Debbie) Spencer; Dale (Margaret) Spencer; Lisa (Steve) Klein; and Tim (Stephanie) Spencer. She worked at Riverton Hospital and Highline Medical Center, usually on the medical floor because she liked to see people get better and go home. Lorraine and Alan were avid sailors, cruising up and down Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Twin Lakes Golf & Country Club and going to all of her grandchildren's special events. Alan and Lorraine traveled the world with family and special friends. She is survived by Alan, her kids, and her 11 grandchildren: Lisa, Melissa, Laura, Jenna, Alyssa, Zachary, Danielle, Kori, Spencer, Kara and Kyle. Everybody loved Lorraine, how full of kindness, love and joy she was. Her sense of humor stayed with her to the end. We were all so lucky to have her in our life. Kathleen Patricia Duggan
Kathleen Patricia Duggan, age 84, died suddenly on November 6, 2013. She was born in Abbeyside, Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland in 1929 and married her husband, Johnny Duggan, in 1947. Because of extremely poor economic times in Ireland, Kathleen and Johnny, along with their two young children, Michael and Mary, emigrated from Ireland to Tacoma, Washington in 1953. Although Kathleen had never ventured more than 100 miles from her home in Ireland, she reluctantly made, while pregnant, the 5500 mile journey to Tacoma in order to try and provide a better life for her children. In 1955, she and Johnny constructed, piece by piece, a family home in Browns Point in which she lived until the time she died. After settling in Tacoma, she had 3 more children, Edward, Helen and John. She had a lifelong devotion to all children. In addition to raising her own 5 children, she ran an in-home daycare from the early1960's until the late 1990's and was known as “Mommy Kathleen” to hundreds of children. Although she never sought attention, she was honored as the Washington State Mother of the Year in 1983 and represented Washington at a National Mother’s Convention in New York City. She was a “soccer mom” to some of this country’s best young soccer players decades before the term was invented. She was a longtime member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Federal Way and the Irish Heritage Club. She is now dancing in heaven with her beloved husband who predeceased her in 2004. She is survived by her five children (Michael, Mary, Edward, Helen and John), 13 grandchildren (Drew, Jack, David, Peter, Kim, Ken, Rory, Orlaith, Michael, Caitlin, Allison, Conor and Kyle), 7 great-grandchildren (Kaily, Kristal, Grace, Justin, Colin, Jaxon and Shea), 3 great-great-grandchildren (Tyson, Urijah and Finnegan) and her sister Chrissy and brother Decky. It was the third-straight 1B Katrice Pond state championship for TekoaOakesdale. The loss to the Nighthawks ended Christian Faith’s state run with a 3-1 record. The Eagles (21-7 overall) landed in the championship match after wins over Three Rivers Christian, Pateros and an impressive four-set victory over Pomeroy in the semifinals earlier Saturday, 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21. As they have been all season, Christian Faith was led by Katrice Pond. The 6-foot junior from Federal Way finished the four state tournament matches with an impressive 87 kills, including 25 during the loss to Tekoa-Oaksdale. Federal Way High School senior Kenna Ramey finished up one of the best swimming careers in the history of the state of Washington Saturday afternoon. Ramey added two more individual state titles to her alreadyfull trophy case by winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard
butterfly. The two championships were Ramey’s fourth and fifth during her career for the Eagles. Ramey’s state championship time in the 50 free was the second-fastest ever recorded in state history. Ramey won the race in a time of 22.96, which was also an automatic All-American time. It was the third consecutive year that Ramey has won the 50-yard title. Her performance broke the Class 4A meet record of 23.17, set 23 years ago by Mercer Island’s Megan Oesting. The state record was set in 2008 by Mount Rainier’s Leona Jennings during the Class 3A meet. Jennings swam a time of 22.92. Ramey followed up her massive
performance in the 50 free with her second-straight championship in the 100 butterfly. Ramey dominated the butterfly with the fifthfastest time in Class 4A history. The Federal Way senior finished the race in 54.32, which was 2.8 seconds faster than second-place finisher Kyndal Phillips from Kentlake (57.12). Eagle junior Tia Thomas was the only other Federal Way school district participant at the Class 4A meet last weekend. Thomas ended up fourth in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 358.70 points. The Bombers leading rusher is senior Anthony Galat, who ran the ball 19 times for 133 yards and a touchdown against Skyview. The Bombers have also been dominant on the defensive side of the ball. Richland has given up 14 points or under in nine of its 11 games. In their two playoff games, the Bombers gave up just seven points to the Ferris Saxons and nine to a high-powered Skyview
offense. Richland finished second to Chiawana in the MidColumbian League with a 6-1 record. Chiawana, who plays Wenatchee in the quarterfinals, was a perfect 7-0. The Bombers have an impressive group of assistant coaches that includes legendary Prosser head coach Tom Moore and 17-year NFL vet Kimo Von Oelhoffen. Moore, Richland’s quarterbacks coach, is the father of former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore and won four state titles at Prosser. Von Oelhoffen was best known as a defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The contest asks students, along with the community, to take a personal pledge against texting and driving. The participating South Puget Sound high school that receives the most pledges will win a meet and greet with Tate at their school. The field includes Decatur, Todd Beamer, Auburn, Auburn Riverside, Kentridge, Kentwood and Emerald Ridge high schools. The contest runs until Dec. 2. It’s just not right for them to cut all these buses, period.” Des Moines resident Carl Johnson, who rides the bus to work daily, said he would certainly feel the impact of the cuts if no funding solution is figured out by Metro. “It’s going to have a direct impact on me,” Johnson said. “But I’m one of those people that believe we’ve been over-promised and under-delivered for a while.” Johnson said he hopes Metro, if service is reduced, would figure out a way to serve customers within the reduced service environment. “There are going to be a lot of positive efficiencies that are going to come out of what they’re doing,” he said. “I do believe they’ll be able to live within those efficiencies. The congestion reduction charge was enacted in 2011 by the King County Council. It helped alleviate Metro’s funding woes by adding an additional $20 to King County residents car tabs. Switzer said Metro is well aware of the direct impact the proposed cuts will have on citizens in Federal Way and throughout the region. “These affect people’s lives. We don’t want to be making cuts. Honda said the council realizes they need to advocate for citizens regarding the proposed cuts. “We need to be really strong, and tell Metro this isn’t going to work for the community,” Honda said. “We have a lot of low-income people in Federal Way, and sometimes, for many of them, the bus is the only way for them to get to work, the grocery store, or school. We can’t have such severe cuts that are going to impact people in a very negative way.”
