west during the winter,” Tingstad said. Tingstad will host his 13th model railroad open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at his home on 508 Broadway St in Coupeville. Tingstad has volunteered at the food bank for 10 years, and asks those coming to see his trains bring a donation for Gifts of

to help pay for an empowerment program for middle school girls. In addition to the money to help pay for teaching projects, Eelkema said the foundation also donated $500 to the elementary school and $500 to the middle and high school for what was described as a “needy kids fund.” Eelkema said the money will be used by counselors to provide the basic needs to homeless students. Those things could include hygiene products, basic clothes, school supplies, emergency food and help pay for activity fees. Those funds would be replenished on an as-needed basis. She credited recent fundraising efforts for allowing the foundation to provide minigrants more than once a year. For example, several restaurants held “Eat out for Kids” nights where a portion of the proceeds were donated to the foundation. Ciao in Coupeville held such an event in October and has another one scheduled in February. Christophers on Whidbey has one scheduled in March and the Front Street Grill has one set for April, Eelkema said. She noted that Aqua Gifts will hold a similar event Dec. 19. The Community Foundation for Coupeville Schools is operated by an 11-member board. Applications for minigrants will be accepted in January and scholarships for students will be awarded in the spring. Foundation vice president Diane Eelkema said the grants will be offered throughout the school year to help teachers in case a special project arises and they need help funding it. Festival group to award community grants Dec. 2 By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter

Thanks to a well-attended summer festival, tens of thousands of dollars will be awarded next month in the form of grants. The Coupeville Festival Association is awarding 15 grants totaling $30,000. Those grants will be awarded during an event scheduled for 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2 at the Whidbey General Hospital conference room. The Coupeville Festival Association, which operates the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival, awards grants each year based on whether a project promotes quality handcrafts and the arts; ensures the cultural enrichment of residents living within the 98239 area code; and beautifies and preserves the unique historic qualities of Coupeville, according to the grant application. The association received 21 applications and, of that number, 15 will receive awards, said Mary Lou Chandler, secretary of the Coupeville Festival Association. The award-winners were notified that they were receiving money, but

were not told how much. Chandler said the applications that didn’t receive money were worthy causes, but didn’t meet the grant requirements. Grants are funded by the fees the 220 or so artists and craftspeople pay for a booth at the two-day festival that occurs in early August, Chandler said. Once all of the costs for the festival are paid, the remaining proceeds are doled out in the form of community grants and student scholarships. Those scholarships were awarded in May 2013. Katelyn Wynn earned the “Mary Jo Eisenmann Scholarship;” Daniel Savalza earned the “Ken Jampsa memorial Scholarship;” and Kelsey Miranda earned the “Linda Lee Martens Memorial Scholarship.” Including the 2013 grant winners, the Coupeville Festival Association has awarded more that $750,000 to community projects in the event’s 49year history.

Wifi zone goes live downtown By Megan Hansen Editor

Visitors to downtown Coupeville can now access the Internet free of charge. A free wifi zone was created by the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association with financial partnership with Allstate Insurance and Town of Coupeville. The zone encompasses the downtown corridor from Coupeville Inn to Main Street and down onto the wharf. CWHA started the project earlier last year and has been working to find the best system for the project. Project chair Denis Hill said he started with researching equipment and testing devices. The system consists of a series of repeaters placed strategically around town. Finding the best spots was really a trial-and-error process, Hill said. When doing research, it was about finding the most user-friendly system. Visitors with wifi devices can pick up the signal downtown. In order to access it, however, they must first open their web browser and sign a user agreement.

If visitors need help finding the service, many of the businesses downtown have signs in windows with directions on the back. The intention of the project is to provide another layer of service, said Vickie Chambers, executive director for CHWA. While in the testing stages of the project, Hill said visitors were finding the connection. During one weekend in 24 hours, 61 unique visitors logged on. The service is not intended for businesses or homes in the area with access to replace their personal service, but for the occasional visitor. The project has no financial gain, but does benefit area, businesses and other various groups. One of the things people will benefit from is that Coupeville is so photogenic, Hill said. Families visiting the area can snap pictures downtown and promptly upload them to social media, which in turn increases Coupeville’s web presence. Having the system is also a benefit in emergencies. Some are meant for Christmas shopping, not me I’m a horrible Christmas shopper. You will never catch me standing in line on Black Friday waiting for some crazy savings. In fact, I haven’t even started my shopping list. No matter how many times I tell myself I’m going Megan Hansen to start early, buy presents Some perspective gradually and store them, it doesn’t happen. This weekend I was reminded again that I need to get on it as I started getting random and not-so-subtle emails from my mother. Frankly, they didn’t even border on subtle. They consisted of one-to-two sentence emails asking what color dishes I still wanted and questioning me about adding to the set of my grandma’s vintage Pyrex mixing bowls. Hmmm, I wonder what she’s getting me? Scheduled gift-giving is difficult for me. It always seems that when I need to buy someone something, I have difficulty coming up with ideas. The best, large, gift I ever gave was a charcoal smoker I got my dad when I was 11. He still uses it to this day and is finally close to wearing it out. Best $50 I ever spent on him. Most of my planned, larger gifts have been pretty hit-and-miss since then. To me, it’s the random gifts that you come across and give for no reason that end up being the best. And most times, it’s the small gifts that end up meaning the most. Two of the best gifts I’ve ever given have been coffee mugs. One was a Valentine’s Day mug I gave to my friend Kim (yes, the one who REALLY loves Christmas). She uses that mug almost daily and routinely sends me pictures of it filled with coffee, sitting on her desk at work. The other mug was one I found at random while waiting in line at Starbucks. When I gave it to my friend, they were tickled to receive the random present. It fit their personality perfectly, and they too use it almost daily. New shelter great, what about outreach Editor, Thank you for the update on WAIF’s new shelter building. It was surprising that Mr. Rupp and the “leaders” you mentioned (not sure exactly who) did not include reference to their more important news, the hiring of a new executive director who hails from a well-regarded no-kill shelter in Kansas. Maybe WAIF will now be able to evolve from a “minimal kill” to a nokill shelter as so many “leaders” connected to WAG are hoping. It is great to read that WAIF is now considering phasing-in construction, a notion that was rejected in the past.

Still, it isn’t necessary to wait for the new building to start a subsidized low-cost spay/neuter program for the public. Island vets have expressed interest in providing such services asap if WAIF would simply allocate donor funds to help them cover costs. Such programs help reduce the number of unwanted animals that wind up in shelters and face long internments or death. The new executive director, if he is supported by WAIF’s board, could get such a program underway pretty quickly. The pet return rate of 60 percent is low by modern standards. If the Coupeville shelter had a stray pet Facebook page like the one started at the Oak Harbor city shelter, reunification rates would rise.

It is now estimated that 6,000 people monitor Oak Harbor’s highly successful page through Facebook networking. It would have been nice to learn from Mr. Rupp about high-speed Internet access and other technology the new shelter will employ to better reunify and adopt animals. Finally, what provisions will WAIF make if any to help animals in addition to dogs and cats, as progressive shelters try to do. Maybe a follow-up story could explore what help the island has for horses and other animals, as how those services (or lack thereof) could be enhanced.

Keeping plants warm, snuggly in the winter toni grove sowin ’n’ the trowel It makes good financial sense to get your home and vehicle ready for the winter. So doesn’t it make just as much sense to put some effort into winterizing your landscaping? After all, according to horticultural and lending experts – not your usual bedfellows – landscaping is one of the few home improvements that always increases both the curb appeal and the value of your property. Not only that, but that added value can grow as the landscaping grows and matures over time. Besides, if you’re reading this column, you either enjoy gardening or you enjoy the results of gardening. The last thing you want is to see your hard work during the other three seasons of the year come to nothing after an ugly winter catches you off guard. The easiest thing to do is mulch those beds. Wood chips, pine needles, straw, grass clippings or leaves are all good examples of organic mulches that can insulate against the rapid freezing and thawing that can cause plants to heave

against tree trunks because it can invite disease as well as rodents, which will find it a great place to hunker down and gnaw the daylights out of your young trees, possibly girdling them. And consider the size of your mulch pieces. Large wood chips can harbor slugs and snails. A too fine mulch may impede water and gas exchange in and out of the soil. You can pull your mulch back in the spring to help warm

out of the ground. It’s not so much to insulate inground plants – if you’ve done your homework when buying them, they should be hardy for our climate – but it never hurts to add another layer of protection as well as weed suppression. For that, your mulch should be at least two or three inches deep and always much deeper in “new” areas where you’re planning on planting for the first time in the spring. Don’t pile mulch flush

The sophomore soccer player was named to the allleague second team as a midfielder. Three Coupeville volleyball players – senior Breeanna Messner, senior Amanda Fabrizi and junior Hailey Hammer – where honorable mention choices for 2013. Football players were not eligible for all-league honors because the Wolves played an indedpendent schedule.

It began by helping her youngest sister; it ended by helping hundreds more. Sylvia Arnold closed out her 20-year Coupeville High School cheer coaching career at the end of this football season. When Arnold moved here with her husband Garrett in 1994, her youngest sister was a junior in high school and a member of the football cheer team that was without a coach. Arnold said she was asked to “save the situation” and has guided the cheer squad since. “I was actually pregnant with my youngest son, Brett, back in those early days of coaching,” Arnold said. “And that son is now graduating from CHS. I’m laying down the cheer hobby as he will be graduating, and it is just time for me to focus on other things at this time in my life.” Arnold opened the door to the team to all, even those competing in other sports during the same season. This year’s squad included more than 40 girls. “We have volleyball players, soccer players, band members, theater kids and Running Start students on our teams. They start working out in the spring, learning all the material and then cheer for home football games in the fall,” she said. Arnold said. “Tough love, boundaries and then setting them free. We’re strict in order to make them strong.” Arnold pointed out that many young ladies need affirmation, and it is more than “telling them how wonderful they are (because) sometimes they are not.” It’s about checking on grades and character with the girls’ teachers, benching the girls when needed, having chats with them about attitudes and emphasizing how they treat others, Arnold said. “But in the long run, their self confidence increases. You see them standing taller. You see them smiling big and having a good time. “How do I know they’re happy and enjoying this thing

called cheer? Because they turn around and teach other little girls what their coaches have instilled in their lives,” Arnold said. One of this year’s team’s final acts was typical of an Arnold group. The Father’s House thrift store in Oak Harbor was low on clothing for young ladies, so the team pulled together and helped. The girls brought in their personal items on the cheer awards night and “carried out bag after bag of clothes to give away and bless the less fortunate,” Arnold said. “This is ‘family’ in action,” Arnold said. And that family touched the Whidbey community for 20 years.

The Coupeville United Methodist Church women spent the year creating quilts that will be sold at a bazaar scheduled for early December. Funds will also be dispersed to the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, said Kathleen Anderson, one of the group members. She added

the money going to the global ministries will help relief efforts in the Philippines. If any leftover quilts remain after the bazaar, they will be donated to a variety of organizations. They will provide a source of comfort for children at Marjie’s House

in Oak Harbor while others will be given to the Whidbey General Hospital Auxiliary for sale in the gift shop. Ludvigson mentioned three quilts recently went to Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma. The church’s holiday

Throughout the year, a group of women spent their Monday mornings sewing for a good cause. The 16 or so members of the women of the Coupeville United Methodist Church have been sewing hats, scarves and quilts of all sizes. Those items will be sold during the holiday bazaar that takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Coupeville United Methodist Church located on North Main Street. Money raised from the bazaar will be donated to organizations that help people on the local, regional and international level. “We work on them all year long,” said Anne Colligan, one of the people helping produce the quilts. Ninety-four-year-old Helen Ludvigson said she sewed the fronts of 67 quilts this year while Georgia Wright said group members have a relay system where one woman puts together one part of a quilt

before moving it to the next woman. During a visit to the church, some group members were busy pricing out items for the Bazaar while others were busy completing such projects as cross-stitching for a towel. Of course they took time to take a break from their work to enjoy coffee and a snack. “Whenever there is a group of United Methodist women, there will be food,” Colligan joked. The Coupeville United Methodist Church Holiday Bazaar is divided into six parts quilts and crafts, a bakery, wreaths, attic treasures and lunch, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “You can’t get a better lunch for $6,” group-member Kathleen Anderson said. The money raised through the bazaar will be donated to a variety of causes. Locally, the proceeds benefit the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club and CADA. Regionally, funds raise through the

an avid railroad enthusiast. Colorado is the most replicated area for model railroaders. “If Colorado disappeared tomorrow, you could just get model railroaders to build it again,” Tingstad said. Some of the places Tingstad depicts includes Salida, Tennessee Pass, Leadville, Silverton and Glenwood Springs. The station Tingstad built for Glenwood Springs is a scratch build — meaning he drew the plans himself and built it from raw materials not in a kit. Other structures Tingstad has built have won awards over the years, such as his

Crystal River Mine Structure which is also a scratch build. Tingstad taught elementary school for 25 years and retired in 1995, and he has been working on model railroads since 1972. He likes sharing his hobby with others. “The teacher thing was still there, and I wanted to teach people,” Tingstad said. Tingstad wasn’t always into trains. In junior high, he would work on model ships. His neighbor built model ships as well, and Tingstad would work on his current project with him. His neighbor also had a model train, but Tingstad didn’t pick that

up as a hobby until later. A model railroad is a multifaceted hobby because it involves scenery, structures and the operations of the trains, Tingstad said. He’s learned to paint, sculpt and build structures. To create scenes is technical. When putting a scene in the distant, the scale has to be right to create the illusion that it’s far away. There are meetings in Oak Harbor every month for model railroad hobbists and about 35 people attend from all over the island, he said. Different speakers come to the meetings and inform attendees about different

topics. Tingstad also meets with a group that works on operations. As his hobby grew, he needed a bigger room in the house to display his work. Over the years he’s expanded the space to include an adjacent room to help stage train operations. By expanding the staging area to the other room, it creates more operating potential, Tingstad said. One of Tingstad’s favorite scenes he’s made is of the convicts who are working on the opposite side of the railroad tracks. Even though the supervisors are separated from the prisoners when a

train goes by, they can’t escape because the drop-off is they’re only escape route. Tingstad likes visitors taking their time to discover all the little scenes he’s created over the years. Since the open house takes place during the holiday season, visitors will also have to find where Santa and his helper are hiding. Tingstad puts them out every year for people to try to spot. With all the thoughtful care Tingstad puts into his work, attendees will having a hard time finding every detail, but he encourages them to try.
