As Covington officials prepare the city’s budget for 2014 there is a shift in strategy for managing what is in the coffers. Derek Matheson, Covington’s city manager, in his budget message Oct. 8 to the City Council wrote in documents he provided to the Reporter that in recent years the focus during the budget process was on how to manage COVINGTON rising costs while revenue streams were flat or decreasing. “For 2014, however, the focus is on how to manage increased revenues while realizing that the recovery is still fragile,” Matheson wrote. “While the temptations is great to create new ongoing programs, that strategy will cause

This year the four Kent School District high schools are coming together to reach their goal of collecting 100,000 pounds of food to donate to local food banks. At Kentwood the school’s Munch Madness food drive competition has seen great success with classes competing in a March madness style bracket to see which fourth period class can bring in the most pounds. Last year the school collected 55,000
pounds, surpassing the goal of 50,000 according to senior and Associated Student Body Vice President Pamela Villaruz. “Our goal this year is 60,000 pounds for the whole school to collect,” Villaruz said. ASB President Mariah Lee said that the idea of partnering with the other Kent schools came from a desire to get the other schools involved as well without it being a competition. “We always wanted to get involved with other schools in the district,” Lee said. “This year it’s our goal to get 100,000 pounds

Maple Valley City council members and city staff continue to move forward on finalizing the city’s contribution to the Ravensdale Park Foundation. A draft of the interlocal agreement between the city and King County, which owns the park property, was put before council members Monday night. The city’s contribution of $2 million will be matched by King County in addition to funding from the state, which combined will allow the Ravensdale Park Foundation to commence phase two of the development and improvement of the park. Maple Valley Parks and Recreation Director Greg Brown said the agreement is for a 30 year term and calls for a dollar-for-dollar match from King County. Over the course
of the agreement 6,000 hours of priority scheduled field time are guaranteed, with 5,000 of them for Ravensdale Park Foundation programs and 1,000 available to the city. “We’re not on the hook for having to pay for those thousand,” Brown told council on Monday. “(They’re) only paid if used.” For the first 10 years of the agreement the city will be able to use the fields at a rate of $16 per hour, with the fee for the last 20 years to be negotiated at a later date. In addition to the $16 per hour rate, use of field lights will be an additional $23 per hour. Brown also explained that the city is not responsible for maintenance costs. In October the council voted unanimously to support the park at the full $2 million the Foundation requested, after initially committing $500,000 earlier in the year.
Community News and Notes KENT SUPERINTENDENT NAMED TOP IN STATE Superintendent Dr. Edward Lee Vargas of the Kent School District was named the 2014 Superintendent of the Year by the Washington Association of School Administrators. Vargas will be a finalist for the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year award, to be announced at the AASA National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tennessee this February. Vargas has served as superintendent of the Kent School District since 2009. KSD has received numerous
The first $500,000 of the city’s contribution will come from existing sources including REET and park development funds. The additional $1.5 million will be financed through the issuance of councilmanic bonds by the city. Members of the Ravensdale Park Foundation approached the Maple Valley City Council about helping to fund the park project about a year ago and the city created a parks commission to vet the idea and offer its recommendation. The commission recommended the city give $2 million to the park project as a near term fix to the city’s lack of parks and ballfields. The plans for Ravensdale Park, which is located outside the city limits of Maple Valley, are laid out in the Ravensdale Park Master Plan and are overseen by the Ravensdale Park Foundation. The master plan was adopted in 2009 and includes a community meadow, six fields
designated for baseball, soccer and all purpose uses. Phase one of the master plan was completed in January 2012 which included renovating an existing field. Phase two of the project — for which the foundation is currently preparing and plans to break ground in January with estimated completion next fall — has an estimated price tag of $6 million. It includes adding two multi-use fields, parking, restrooms, a concessions stand, play structures, an open area, trails, and maintenance facility. The Foundation is receiving funding at the county and state level, as well as funds from the city and multiple private donors.

to Covington’s legislative agenda document, will be to “continue to advocate jointly for federal and state funding for state Route 169 and state Route 516 improvements and for transit alternatives in the three rapidly growing communities.” The agenda includes three project-specific funding requests, in order of priority: widening of Southeast 272nd Street, also known as SR 516, from the Jenkins Creek Bridge east of Wax Road to 185th Avenue Southeast, a higher education needs assessment related to the city’s interest
in bringing colleges and university’s to its planned town center area and the third request is for park safety and renovations to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Covington’s lobbyist will also encourage lawmakers to support the retention and reinstatement of stateshared revenues including liquor revenue and the Public Works Assistance Account as well as urge legislators to adopt a proposed transportation investment package which would fund SR 516 projects, distribute gas tax revenue to cities and counties in addition to
authorizing King County to impose a 1.5 percent motor vehicle excise tax to pay for roads and transit. Two other items are top priorities on the city’s legislative agenda. First is the push for increased funding for design and infrastructure needs of cities including the surface transportation program and Land and Water Conservation Fund at the federal level, the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program and Public Works Trust Fund. Second, Covington officials oppose the transfer of city authority for land use,
building code and rightof-way administration to special purpose districts. In addition, the council approved supporting the lobbying efforts of other organizations regarding economic development funding, unfunded mandates, Auburn’s efforts to secure an Amtrak stop as well as support other parties’ efforts to advocate for increased rail and transit opportunities in Southeast King County. Covington will also support the Association of Washington Cities and Suburban Cities Association legislative programs.
Seniors may qualify for property tax break

The King County Department of Assessments is the office through which the Property Tax Exemption and Deferral Program is administered. The exemption program offers a reduction in property taxes and the deferral program places a lien against the property that must be repaid, plus interest, once the person who applied for the deferral is no longer eligible. Requirements for either
program include age — the applicant must be 61 by the end of the year — or the applicant must be unable to work due to disability, the applicant must own the home, and the applicant must live in the home over half the year. The income qualification is based off annual household disposable income. Disposable income includes social security and other benefits, pensions and other retirement accounts, income from a business or rental and interest earned. It does not include VA dis-
ability payments or reverse mortgages. To qualify for an exemption the household income must be $35,000 per year or less. To qualify for a deferral household income needs to be between $35,000 and $40,000. Once an exemption has been granted it is good for six years, a deferral must be renewed each year.

A federal grand jury in Seattle indicted former ATF Special Agent and Group Supervisor James Contreras with embezzlement of public funds and making false statements, United States Attorney Melinda Haag and Special Agent in Charge Frank J. Cabibi, United States Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, Los Angeles Field Office, announced. The indictment alleges that during the time Contreras was working as an agent and supervisor at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives office in Seattle, he embezzled money from a cash fund for which he was responsible and prepared and submitted falsified reports when accounting for the money in the fund. According to the indictment, Contreras, 51, of Maple Valley, was a special agent and group supervisor with ATF in Seattle. He was also responsible for an Agent Cashier

Contreras was responsible for reviewing and approving requests by special agents under his supervision to use money from the fund for authorized purposes and for requesting replenishment of the fund from ATF Headquarters on a monthly basis. The indictment alleges that between March 10, 2010 and April 30, 2012, Contreras knowingly embezzled and converted to his own use money from the Agent Cashier Fund. Specifically, the indictment states that in connection with thirty alleged payments from the fund, Contreras falsified required records and forms by writing what appeared to be the signatures of agents who were supposedly requesting and receiving money from the fund from Contreras, and by signing forms falsely representing that payments were being made to informants working for the ATF on specific investigations. In addition to the embezzlement count, the indictment

Contreras will make his initial appearance before the assigned U.S. District Court Judge in Seattle in December. Susan Badger is the Assistant United States Attorney who is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Rosario Calderon. The prosecution is the result of a one and a half year investigation by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General, Investigations Division and the ATF Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations.

The smallest monthly bill for jails from Kent in the first three quarters of 2013 was $7,295 in January when just three extra beds were required. The most expensive month was May at a cost of $21,075, with 103 extra beds. In the first three quarters of 2013, Maple Valley paid for 478 additional beds at a cost of $64,530. Those who are doing alternative programs — like electronic monitoring — are also counted as inmates. That means that if one of the two guaranteed spaces that Maple Valley pays for is open an inmate who is electronically monitored, for example, is counted as one of those spaces, or if there are more than two Maple Valley inmates at the jail then those on electronic monitoring are billed as additional inmates. Maple Valley City Manager David Johnston told The Reporter earlier in November that a higher than anticipated rate of electronic monitoring contributed to driving up costs. Based on reports provided by the city, 15 inmates were supervised through work release, electronic monitoring, and work crew out of custody through the end of September, with the exclusion of data from May and March which was not available. “At face value it sounds unfair that a Maple Valley inmate
Community News and Notes KENT FIREFIGHTERS COLLECTING TOYS FOR TOYS FOR JOY The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority, Kent Firefighters Local 1747, and the Kent Firefighters Foundation are once again sponsoring and supporting the Toys for Joy program. Toys for Joy is an annual event where new, unwrapped toys are collected, sorted, wrapped, and delivered to the Kent and Covington Food Banks for distribution to needy families in our community. Non-perishable food and monetary donations will also be accepted. Economically, 2013 has seen improvements over previous years, but there are still many in need. Some families have to dedicate their money to the basics in order to survive and do not have the finances to buy gifts during the holidays. The Toys for Joy program was created to help these local families. Toy wrapping parties are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 and 18 and are open to the public. Last year the public wrapped over 5,500 gifts. Toys can be dropped off at the Lake Meridian Fire Station, No. 75, located at

Under the ILA with Kent, the city pays $14,583.33 per month for two court days, one overflow court day, and one jury day per month. Additionally, if the city has more than 333 cases in any given month the city will pay an additional $4,000. As of the end of September the city had not had more than 333 cases in any month of this year. One of the additional court costs for the city this year was $55,190 to transfer criminal cases and infractions from the Enumclaw courts to Kent. The city budgeted $25,000 for transfer costs. “A lot more cases got transferred than was anticipated,� former City Finance Director Tony McCarthy wrote to a city staff member in February. 15635 S.E. 272 St. (wrapping party location), and at Fire Station No. 78 at 17820 S.E. 256 St. in Covington. The Toys for Joy program can only exist with the generous donations of local residents and businesses. Over the years, that generosity has been tremendous. This year we are hoping for everyone’s continued support. Johnston said that the cost overruns will be paid for through the city’s general fund reserves. “That’s a general fund funded service,� Johnston said of the city’s jail costs in a phone interview on Monday. “This years’ over budget is just being part of our general fund. WE have deficit spending anyways so it’s coming out of hte reserves. Adn the same for next year.�

Many reasons to be thankful

As the clock struck midnight on Halloween, the winter holiday season immediately descended upon us, despite the protestations of many of my friends at least. First, there was the Christmas carols playing seemingly everywhere. Starbucks started using its holiday red cups and offering egg nog lattes. And then there was the 30 days of Thankfulness posts on Facebook. At least that was focused on Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I love this time of year, but sometimes I feel like we’ll start celebrating this holiday season right around the first day of school if we aren’t careful. Just look at the insanity of retailers opening up on Thanksgiving Day. That has not just happened. That’s crept up over the past few years as Black Friday sales started earlier and earlier. That 6 a.m. sale moved to 4 a.m. then midnight and then 8 p.m. after your post-turkey extravaganza nap. My husband works for Walgreens, which for as long as he has been part of the company, has always been open every day of the year including Thanksgiving and Christmas. My father-in-law was a firefighter for decades, retiring in 2010, and often had to work holidays, too. So, it’s not as if this is something my family has not dealt with and adjusted to over the years, however, those were exceptions to the rule. Now the rule is shifting. Thankfully, though, my husband only has to work until noon on Thanksgiving Day. That still leaves plenty of time to go to his parents house, finish the cooking, eat, enjoy time with the family and watch football. Plus I’ll have a good five hours in the morning before he gets home to get in a run on the treadmill and do some reading as well as spend precious time with my daughter, who just turned 4 early last week. Even with the holiday season creeping into our lives sooner every year, I am thankful for more than just the fact my husband only has to work a short day on the holiday this year. I am thankful for my health, for a job, for my husband and daughter, for every single morning I wake

Joseph T. Cimaomo Jr., was recently elected as the new City Council member to Position 4 in Covington. Cimaomo resides in Covington with his wife and son and this is where he attended high school, graduating from Kentwood. He has lived in the Covington area over the last 20 years and seems to be a great fit for the position. I moved to Washington in 1995 from Pennsylvania and Cimaomo was one of the first people I met. We went to school from third grade to graduation together. World history and politics have always been a strong point with Cimaomo, who started really following the presidential election process in 2000.

I think we should all be thankful for the amazing work done by amazing people like Meg Holland at the Storehouse, Lila Henderson and the staff as well as volunteers at the Maple Valley Food Bank, Tina McDonough and her vigilance in raising money for a cure for breast cancer, Laura Bingle and her efforts to raise money for Gilda’s Club as well as her tireless support of Valley Girls & Guys, McDonough’s team that walks the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s 3 Day For the Cure every September and I am thankful for Dace Anderson and Arielle Young, who run Dace’s Rock ‘n’ More, providing music lessons to anyone who wants them regardless of their ability to pay — there is something vastly empowering in the act of learning music. I am constantly amazed by Vine Maple Place and what they do as well as the giving spirit of business owners such as Norm and Tammy Mack, who own Grocery Outlet in Maple Valley, as well as Greg and Jessi Powell, who own Grocery Outlet in Kent. Then there is all the incredible things the Rotary clubs of Covington and Maple Valley do for the community. Covington Rotary feeds elementary age children every week during the school year while Maple
Valley Rotary is gearing up for its annual Shop with a Cop event which will provided Christmas gifts for hundreds of kids in need this year. A week ago Katherine Smith talked about all the amazing projects local students do to help the community and I am also constantly impressed by the youth of our communities. Speaking of children, I am also thankful the community of the Tahoma School District which extends beyond limits of the city of Maple Valley, approved the construction bond measure because it will enable our community to grow stronger and to nurture the service-oriented spirit in future generations. There are so many reasons to be thankful this year. And even as the holiday season seems to creep up on us sooner each year, I hope that the warmth, the joy, the gratitude and the spirit of giving follows closely but doesn’t leave so soon after the turkey is consumed, the carols fade away and the cold, dark winter drives us all to the Internet in search of vacations to tropical climates come mid-winter break. My life is blessed and I hope many of you share the same sentiments. This Thanksgiving I hope the sales and early shopping and stress of the lead up to Christmas don’t take over so that the things you are thankful for this week don’t get skewed out of perspective. Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers, enjoy the long weekend and the blessings of life.
Cimaomo thought that since he would be voting in a few short years and have a say on who is the leader of this country that he should start following and paying more attention to politics. Cimaomo is a Christian man who believes in helping the families of Covington and bringing more police officers to the city to help keep the families safer. Cimaomo wants to help make Covington a more family oriented city and help the city grow in the next four to five years. With the growth of the city, that means more jobs for workers including, but not limited to, emergency services. Cimaomo plans to be a voice for the people of Covington and has always been there and listened to anyone that has an opinion regarding politics. I spent a few minutes recently talking to Cimaomo about his plans for city council now that he is elected and this is what he had to say. “Now that I am elected I plan to be a voice for the young families and young people who
make Covington their home,” Cimaomo said. “I plan to get us more police officers and to get our roads up to standard.Those two things will take some time but they are what I ran on and what I plan to work on at all times.” He also said that he sees Covington being a new home to medical research and home to higher education. The biggest changes that need to come to Covington, Cimaomo said, are improvements to our roads and the adding of officers to our police force. “I am going to help to bring more business to Covington to build up our tax base,” Cimaomo said. Let’s see what the next four years hold for the city of Covington and newest member of the City Council.

Choose your emergency room carefully My husband recently went to the MultiCare emergency room — twice, once due to failure of the treatment at the Urgent Care — and when we first arrived they had us sign paperwork. One of the forms says that we may have a doctor that is not a MultiCare employee. That was OK with us so long as they are competent doctor. What that really meant was that the doctor would most likely not be in our health insurance network. It turns out that they contract out for all of their ER doctors from what they told us and their doctors are not in the Boeing Network for health insurance — and probably not yours either. The bottom line is that in

this day and age of high deductibles, by going to MultiCare’s ER, you are very likely to not have much of the doctor’s portion of the bill covered due to out of network issues. This is so wrong on so many levels. If MultiCare is going to offer medical services to a community, they should have doctors that are in-network in their ER. Being in an emergency situation is not the time to debate with the front desk if your bill is going to be covered by your insurance company. I hope that Multicare addresses this issue sooner than later! Otherwise, be informed and choose your ER carefully. There is no guarantee that Valley does anything different, so you may want to investigate before you are in an emergency situation!

Tax dollars should be spent wisely This letter is not a personal attack on anyone. It is based on the belief that tax dollars should be spent wisely. Back in the 1960s King County built swimming pools at several locations around the county. As the facilities aged, the county realized how expensive they were to operate and maintain. They looked for cities to take on this burden. The Tahoma School District passed on Tahoma Pool which is now called Covington Aquatic Center. Even though the Kent Meridian Pool was only a few miles away, the city of Covington took on the costs of running the pool. Over the years well over a million dollars of taxes have been spent beyond the revenue generated by the pool.
This money could have been spent on parks. In my opinion the time has come to privatize the pool so that some of the money can be spent on parks. Since the city accepted grants for the pool, it must be kept open but it could be operated at less cost to the taxpayers. I am not opposed to swimming, it may be the most complete exercise for your body. The pool should stay open but by privatizing more tax dollars could be spent on parks. If it was up to me, I would eliminate the Parks Director position and spend that money on park improvements or acquisitions. I realize that this idea is too far out of the box to be considered, but raising taxes should not always be the only alternative for spending on parks.

The city of Covington will host an open house from 6:30-8 p.m. on Dec. 11 on the Jenkins Creek to 185th Place SE, state Route 516 improvement project. The open house, which will be held at the Covington City Hall council chambers, will be an opportunity for residents to learn about this capital improvement project. The project is to widen and reconstruct a portion of SE 272nd Street between Jenkins Creek and 185th Place SE. It will include the crossing of Jenkins Creek with a new structure for the stream, widening the street from two lanes to five lanes including curb and gutter, 8-foot sidewalks, access control features, landscaping, and provisions for u-turns.

RELAY FOR LIFE TO HOST MEETING
The obvious people to invite are ones without families in the area. I could only list a couple people I know who fit that bill, but it got me to thinking. I came up with an ingenious thought: I’d invite people who don’t want to be with their families because of the drama and chaos. All my Thanksgivings are easygoing. Perhaps it would be kind of me to extend an invitation to people who have never experienced the holiday as a laid back event. newspapers from Western Washington to deliver them to Eastern Washington, including holidays. So we would drive to our relative’s house in Western Washington for dinner, then head off to pick up the newspapers in downtown Seattle and go home. My mom had to be home by 3 a.m. to deliver the newspapers in the whole town. Once my sister and I got to driving age, we delivered newspapers too. We weren’t around at dinner long enough for chaos to ensue. One of the best Thanksgivings we had in those days was the one when we got snowed in – we had all my mom’s homemade apple pies. We just got one of the chickens we had raised out of the freezer and feasted on roasted chicken, potatoes and pie. My mom asked me who I would invite to a big dinner. I don’t personally have a big family, just my husband, kids, my sister and my mother. My sister never comes home for Thanksgiving. My husband’s siblings have families of their own they spend time with.

Last year my motherin-law and father-in-law joined us and it was probably one of the best Thanksgivings we’ve ever had. We had dinner and let my motherin-law pick out the movie, plus they live rather far away, so they didn’t take home any leftovers. My mother and I had a long conversation last week about our penchant for having low-key Thanksgiving meals. We celebrated Thanksgiving with my husband’s family last weekend, but I do plan on cooking a simple, carb loaded Thanksgiving meal on the actual day. I have to say, even if we were to spend Thanksgiving Day at someone else’s house, I still would cook the traditional dinner at home either the day before or the day after, because what’s most important are the leftovers. My mother will come over to share our meal with us. We’ll eat dinner, then kick back in the family room and watch a movie together. It’s not without design that it’s only the five of us for dinner; the less people the less chaos and the more leftovers.

What was once planned as a larger project for the Covington Aquatic Center will now likely be complete in separate parts. In mid-September city officials opened the bids from contractors on a project funded largely by a $400,000 grant from the state and found the pricing for the work was too high. “We had to circle back and look at the design and talk to the architect and sort of dig deep about what we can adjust to still meet the intent of the project and get it within its costs with the funding that we have,� said Scott Thomas, Covington’s Parks and Recreation director. “We are in the process of doing so right now. In the first go around, we had everything as one really big, diverse project. Now we’re breaking it down to two smaller projects.� The first task at hand is the roof over the natatorium, or the pool, which needs some attention, Thomas said.

Kentwood’s Ashley Rolsma will trade soccer for rugby at the college level

Until Ashley Rolsma found rugby she was seriously considering playing soccer in college. Rolsma, a senior at Kentwood, was persuaded to attend a touch game with the Kent Crusaders Rugby club by Cassidy Meyers, who graduated in June and is now playing rugby at American International College. “She kept bugging me about it,” Rolsma said. “She said if I went to one practice, she’d stop bugging me about it. So, I went and I fell in love with it.” That was in December 2012. At the time she was playing club basketball and club soccer in addition to playing hoops for the Conquerors. “Somehow I managed to do all that and school,” Rolsma said. “There were some days I did not get that much sleep.” She was fortunate, however, that rugby, soccer and basketball games did not overlap too much on weekends. It all worked out. Rolsma started playing basketball in elementary school. Last season Kentwood made a deep

KRIS HILL, The Reporter run in the playoffs, getting to the 4A state tournament and played at the Tacoma Dome, with the season bleeding into the start of practices for rugby. “Basketball has been in my life for a while,” she said. “I’ve played with these girls I’m finishing up my senior year with since middle school.” She went to touch games, but, Rolsma said she wasn’t able to get to practice
until after basketball season ended and missed playing in the first two games. She explained to Rex Norris, who coaches the U19 girls team for Kent Crusaders and teaches AP Psychology at Kentwood, that she was committed to basketball and she said he understood. “I came on late to the scene,” Rolsma said. “The first couple weeks is actually getting to know the sport. There were actually quite a
few new girls last year. But, I picked it up pretty quick.” And there was something about the atmosphere of the Crusaders girls rugby team that appealed to her. “The team aspect of it, it’s really a family, no cliques,” Rolsma said. “I know every one of those girls works their butts off at practice. And the coaching staff is phenomenal.” Even though she missed the beginning of practices
and the season, Rolsma said, the team made her feel welcome. It was a vastly different experience than club soccer, she said, which was one of the reasons she was willing to consider walking away from that sport after going on several unofficial visits to schools to look at soccer teams. “Once I joined rugby, I was like, ‘I will quit soccer,’” Rolsma said. “And I hadn’t even played a game. My parents were pretty freaked out, but, I think they know I made the right decision, especially after the journey it’s taken me on.” That experience included making it to the championship game of the National Invitational Tournament in May. Rolsma said winning the semifinal game was a huge moment not just for her, but for the Crusaders, not to mention it was so close the official had to double check the score when it was over to make sure she knew which team won. “We get a team … to get to the national championship game, a team we’d never beaten before,” Rolsma said. “When they posted it on Facebook, all [ more TRY page 11 ]

Community Notes SHOWARE COLLEGE CLASSIC RETURNS TO KENT IN DECEMBER The Showare College Classic basketball game will return to Kent for a third year Dec. 19. The Seattle University Redhawks will face down the Norfolk University Spartans at ShoWare Center in Kent. With Norfolk averaging 96 points and Seattle averaging 84 points per game, the matchup is expected to be intense and high scoring, says organizer Steve Turcott. Seattle University took a 10 point loss to the University of Washington on November 10, and then beat out CSU Fullerton and Evergreen College to secure a fourth place standing in the Western Athletic Conference. Norfolk State lost its first game to Texas Southern University but won following games against Newberry College and Virginia Union. A narrow 76-74 loss to the East Carolina Pirates Monday knocked them to third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Seattle University entered the Western Athletic Conference last year, but are already a preseason pick for a second place finish in the conference. The conference champion is automatically entered into the NCAA Tournament. Seattle University beat out Evergreen College in the tournament’s first year, and lost to CSU Bakersfield in the second year. Tickets will be $30 for VIP seating with dinner, $25 for courtside seats, $17 for reserved, $10 for GA and $5 for students and seniors, with a 7:00 P.M. start time.

It was like nothing else.” Rugby has helped her be a better athlete in her other sports. “It’s actually given me a bit more confidence in myself,” Rolsma said. “It’s helped me gain more confidence in my abilities, especially in a leadership role.” She played soccer for Kentwood this fall. Conquerors coach Aaron Radford had nothing but praise for Rolsma in an email interview. “She works very hard,” Radford wrote. “She puts in her best effort each day. She isn’t a vocal person, but her work ethic says enough. She is very strong and physical, plus her speed is just enough to get the job done.” Radford said that while he can’t draw a direct connection between rugby and soccer for Rolsma, he did see good things from her this season. “She has progressively

That is exactly what I would want from a defender on my soccer team.” While Rolsma is excited about the next phase of her life as a student-athlete, she is still focused on the next rugby season and basketball this year. She hopes the Conquerors basketball team will get back to the state tournament this year with the amount of experience and talent returning. “I’m hoping to go really far this year,” she said. “It’s our last year playing together and my last year playing this sport. We’re fortunate to have that (experience) and there’s a lot of new players, too, that are nice to have. The fact that we (the seniors) have played together so long, we’re used to each other. It’s nice because we have a really good connection out there on the court.” As for the Crusaders girls rugby team, she hopes they get back to the national
tournament again in the spring. “I just hope for a good successful season,” Rolsma said. “That I can walk away knowing I did my all.” And Rolsma is finalizing her plans for where rugby will take her after high school. This past year since that first touch game with the Crusaders has been something of a whirlwind. “It was so fast,” she said. “I was just excited to win state. And then to go to nationals. And to get a call from a coach that I made the All American team.” Recently she visited three different schools, official visits as a student-athlete, to explore her options for college rugby. Her dad asked her at one point if she was sure she wanted to play in college and she assured him she was positive. “I don’t want to play two years and have it be done,” Rolsma said.

From rowing to Iron Man competed in a triathlon but still had never run a full marathon, he said. A friend and former colleague, Courtney Haase, from the University of Minnesota, where he worked prior to Oregon State, got him interested into competing in the Ironman, he said. At the time, she had competed in four Ironman’s and would share with Foltz that she had learned a lot about herself through training and competing. “(What she said) really struck a cord somewhere within me,” he said. “It was a huge challenge and one that the journey would provide the greatest realization of what kind of person I am and can be.” When Haase met Foltz in 2011, she said he was not in the best shape. At the time she was training for an Ironman competition and he would ask her questions about her training and competing. For Christmas, Haase bought him the book, “Becoming an Ironman.” Foltz went to Arizona last year, he said, where he volunteered for the Ironman to see what it was all about. “I came away from it inspired and fired up, Foltz said. “I didn’t sleep that night I just wanted to be out there doing it.” The next day when registration opened he signed up and persuaded Haase to sign up and compete with

Andy Foltz competed in his first Ironman competition on Nov. 17 in Arizona. In fact, when he signed up he had never competed in a triathlon or marathon before. Foltz graduated from Sumner High School in 2002. While a Spartan, he played for the golf team. After graduating high school, he studied at Western Washington University where he was on the men’s rowing team. Once he graduated from Western, he stayed connected to rowing. He started coaching and for two years during graduate school at the University of Washington he volunteered as an intern coach for the women’s rowing team, he said. Currently, Foltz is an assistant coach for the Oregon State University women’s rowing team. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Prior to competing, Foltz said out of the three events he only felt confident in the biking portion. “I have done the Seattle to Portland Classic a few times,” he said. “But I had never even done laps in a pool (before).” However, by the time November came, he had
him, he said. And she did. In her experience, “most people like the idea of being an Ironman but they don’t want to train or make the commitment,” she said. She was a little surprised when Foltz signed up to the Ironman. But she set up a training plan and sent him a copy of it. Foltz’s training started the moment he signed up, he said, at least mentally it did. Once he got back to Oregon from volunteering, he workout roughly three to four times a week. By the time spring came, he was training six days a week until November. Each week, Foltz would increase mileage and time. He would do a good mix of all three disciplines. “He did an incredible job sticking to the training plan,” Haase said. After a year of training both mentally and physically, race day had arrived. “The actual race day was amazing,” Foltz said. “I was so nervous.” The swim portion of the Ironman came first and that was what he was most nervous for, he said. But he was very calm and comfortable in the water and he really enjoyed swimming the 2.4 miles. “It was awesome to see Andy progress through the year and gain confidence and discipline,” Haase said. “I am really proud of him for jumping into this sport

But the greatest feeling was knowing that he finished the race and heard Mike Riley “The Voice of Ironman” call out his name and tell him that he was an Ironman.
