Two juvenile suspects were arrested the afternoon of Nov. 20 for allegedly making a bomb threat at Bonney Lake High School. Students and staff were evacuated the morning before when the note was discovered.
It was the third bomb threat to hit the school in the last two years, one of which took place less than three months ago. The Bonney Lake Police Department, assisted by a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department bomb detecting K9, conducted a search of the school and found no evidence of weapons or explosives. A break in the investigation came when police identified the suspects by video
surveillance. Detective work confirmed what the video footage implied. The two suspects were booked into Remann Hall. One of the suspects has been charged with threat to bomb or injury property, according to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office. The second suspect has not yet been charged, at the time of press. Threats to bomb or injure property is a class B felony referenced in RCW 9.61.160.
Class B felonies are punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $20,000. A subsection of the law stated, “It shall not be a defense to any prosecution under this section that the threatened bombing or injury was a hoax.” Sumner School District Superintendent Sara Johnson said it was an empty threat but the law doesn’t take the matter lightly and neither does school administration.

No charges are being filed against a local man who shot and killed an intruder during the late-evening hours of Nov. 18. It was approximately 11 p.m. when a 21-year-old man drove his vehicle through a gate and crashed into cars parked in the driveway. According to information provided by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Enumclaw resident Cole Mathews began screaming and breaking windows in the rural home. The residents heard the ruckus and took action. While the wife locked herself in a bedroom and called 911, her husband, 67, armed himself with a gun. Police reports show the intruder kicked in a door, entered the home, chased the husband and began punching him. At that point, the homeowner fired shots from his handgun, hitting

Friday, the Spartans beat the West Valley Rams from Yakima 1-0 in the semifinals to advance to the state championship game for the second year in a row. Sumner falls to Lynden Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer
The Sumner Spartans’ perfect season came to an end Friday losing to the Lynden Lions 54-21 in the quarterfinals of the state championship at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. The Spartans ended 7-0 in conference play and 11-1 overall. “This was an incredible season and the seniors leave here setting a perfect example to our young athletes of what it takes to become champions,” coach Keith Ross said. “Their hard work and focus will leave a lasting legacy for many years. I am proud to be their coach.” Lynden scored first less than two minutes into the game and never looked back. The Lions scored on its first four possessions of

well,” he said. Before entering the half, Lynden scored another touchdown and increased its lead to 47-7 over the Spartans. Lynden scored for the last time in the game early in the third quarter capitalizing off another turnover by Sumner. With two minutes to go
in the third quarter, the Spartans forced a fumble on Lynden’s 16-yard line. Sumner capitalized and added seven points to the board, the Lions led 54-14 over the Spartans. To finish the game, the Spartans scored one more time on a 34-yard touchdown run by running back DeJon Lynch with 1:47 to play.

Turley said. “There was a lot of pressure after winning state last year.” Turley said winning a second title was more difficult. “It’s never been done in school history.” The coach said two overtime victories during the regular season against White River and Steilacoom gave the girls the momentum in the drive for the championship. The Spartans ended its season 13-1-0 in league play and 18-2-1 overall.

Sumner grad is an ‘Ironman’ Bonney Lake Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

Andy Foltz competed in his first Ironman competition on Nov. 17 in Arizona. In fact, when he signed up he had never competed in a triathlon or marathon before. Foltz graduated from Sumner High School in 2002. While a Spartan, he played for the golf team. After graduating high school, he studied at Western Washington University where he was on the men’s rowing team. Once he graduated from Western, he stayed connected to rowing. He started coaching and for two years during graduate school at the University of Washington he volunteered as an intern coach for the women’s rowing team, he said. Currently, Foltz is an assistant coach for the Oregon State University women’s rowing team. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Prior to competing, Foltz said out of the three events he only felt confident in the biking portion. “I have done the Seattle to Portland Classic a few times,” he said. “But I had never even done laps in a pool (before).” However, by the time November came, he had competed in a triathlon but still had never run a full marathon, he said. A friend and former colleague, Courtney Haase, from the University of Minnesota, where he worked
prior to Oregon State, got him interested into competing in the Ironman, he said. At the time, she had competed in four Ironman’s and would share with Foltz that she had learned a lot about herself through training and competing. “(What she said) really struck a cord somewhere within me,” he said. “It was a huge challenge and one that the journey would provide the greatest realization of what kind of person I am and can be.” When Haase met Foltz in 2011, she said he was not in the best shape. At the time she was training for an Ironman competition and he would ask her questions about her training and competing. For Christmas, Haase bought him the book, “Becoming an Ironman.” Foltz went to Arizona last year, he said, where he volunteered for the Ironman to see what it was all about. “I came away from it inspired and fired up,” Foltz said. “I didn’t sleep that night I just wanted to be out there doing it.” The next day when registration opened he signed up and persuaded Haase to sign up and compete with him, he said. And she did. In her experience, “most people like the idea of being an Ironman but they don’t want to train or make the commitment,” she said. She was a little surprised when Foltz signed up to the Ironman. But she set up a training plan and sent him a

Once he got back to Oregon from volunteering, he workout roughly three to four times a week. By the time spring came, he was training six days a week until November. Each week, Foltz would increase mileage and time. He would do a good mix of all three disciplines. “He did an incredible job sticking to the training plan,” Haase said. After a year of training both mentally and physically, race day had arrived. “The actual race day was amazing,” Foltz said. “I was so nervous.” The swim portion of the Ironman came first and that was what he was most nervous for, he said. But he was very calm and comfortable in the water and he really enjoyed swimming the 2.4 miles. “It was awesome to see Andy progress through the
year and gain confidence and discipline,” Haase said. “I am really proud of him for jumping into this sport and trying something new. The best part of an Ironman is learning about yourself and your limits. I think Andy realized how much he enjoys being healthy and fit and how much he likes having a challenge in life.” After months of training alone, Foltz said the best part of competing were the people competing with him and the spectators. “It was great to see people out there cheering for me,” he said. Foltz finished the race in 12 hours, 13:26 minutes, ranking 962, according to the Ironman’s website. “Ironman races are cruel and a huge challenge,” he said. But the greatest feeling was knowing that he finished the race and heard Mike Riley “The Voice of Ironman” call out his name and tell him that he was an Ironman.
Bonney Lake High School senior Gordon Nelson signed his National Letter of Intent to play NCAA Division II lacrosse at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri this fall. Nelson plays for the Auburn Riverside lacrosse program where students from Auburn Riverside, White River, Sumner, Bonney Lake and Enumclaw high schools play. He has played lacrosse since seventh grade. During his junior year, he played running back and middle linebacker for the Panthers. Football was his first favorite sport, Nelson said. For his senior year, he switched his focus to lacrosse. He started enjoying the sport more and he was getting significantly better at it after his sophomore year, he said. Auburn Riverside coach Louis Lucchesi has been
Nelson’s coach since he was in eighth grade. “He is very athletic and always had the potential,” Lucchesi said. Playing lacrosse, Nelson felt would better benefit him getting into college and afterwards. When asked what sets him apart from other lacrosse players, Nelson said he tries to motivate others on the field. Lucchesi said the team is well rounded and Nelson is a major contributor. Nelson credits his coach for his success. Lucchesi has helped him grow up and be a better player as well as a better person, he said. He dedicates his hard work to his coach because Lucchesi couldn’t play himself. Lucchesi was a lacrosse player and was going to play at Navy, Nelson said, but he was in an accident that left him unable to play. “I was extremely happy when he told me he was committing,” Lucchesi said.
SPSL Honors With winter just around the corner, the fall sports season is coming to an end. Student athletes from Bonney Lake High School and Sumner High School were chosen to the first and second team SPSL and awarded honorable mention along with coach of the year and athlete of the year, among others. The Answer

ears ago my daughter and I learned first-hand the power in a simple Biblical command. “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. “ I Thessalonians 5:18 We were both fighting depression. Bobbi’s wrong choices robbed us both of the freedoms we once enjoyed. A long prison sentence loomed ahead because of her controlled substance abuse. Drugs no longer ruled my daughter’s life, but the eight and one-half years behind bars during her thirties robbed her of the opportunity to have children of her own. I dreaded more years of driving long distances to spend an hour or two with her in a crowded visiting room. Long years of frustrating shopping trips wore me down. No, she couldn’t have any red clothes; even though red had always been
my favorite for her. Okay, maybe blue would work. No, it was too close to the color the officers wore. Could I get her a black top that would go with everything? No, black was never allowed. Could I purchase needed articles at Value Village and save a bit of the extra expense? No. All clothing must be new, and it must have the tags to prove it. She needed a coat to protect her during long hours spent standing exposed to weather while the officers counted the women over and over. Would the coat I loved, pink and white with a grey lining, do? No. Grey was being denied. Any clothing sent in, if not approved, she must mail out. Her thirty-one cent per hour wages must stretch to cover all her lotions, shampoo, and health needs. Could she afford seven dollars to mail out a package? No way! But that’s what they charged. Bobbi and I struggled for five years to adjust to the constant changing of prisons, rules, roommates and family tensions precipitated by her presence there. Heaviness of heart over those issues plus family health complications and deaths tempted us toward self pity. Frustrations multiplied. Her sixth Christmas behind bars approached. We used one of our
precious visits to come up with a plan. What decision did we make? Restrictions and limitations would no longer frame our lives. We would destroy their power by counting our blessings. November, Year Six Bobbi’s list began: I Am Thankful For: Daylight savings time happened. Now I’m able to read my Bible in sunlight instead of darkness. I actually had clean sheets given to me at linen exchange. Sometimes they are dirty, or dusty. The rain. The salmon need it, the wildlife need it, and skiers appreciate the snow. No one was killed in the mudslide event at Snoqualmie Pass. I didn’t have to work today. A new student attended exercise class today. My roommates. Mail. I got a letter from Mom and a sister in Christ. No new rules today. Some of the staff are approachable; they care, and it’s nice to see. My Mom has been so good at sending pictures. Because of her pictures I wake up every morning smiling at my family. I’m clean. I’m not “on the sheets” any more. I’m healing. I’m loved. Gas prices have gone down so
it doesn’t cost my family so much to visit me. I have a voice. I like to sing. I am doing better mentally this week. I’m not nearly as discouraged. My prayers are being answered. I’m more at peace. Dear Mom, Hi! This list is for you. It helped. Great idea. I will continue writing down things I’m thankful for. It helps me dwell on something more positive. I love you. I hope you are doing better, too. I’m praying for you, Grandma and CB. You’re the greatest of friends. I have a wonderful Mom, and mentor. Love, Bobbi Yes, I felt better. My mood, thoughts, and imaginings improved. My energy levels increased and I accomplished more daily. By Marjorie Eldred How can it be November? Already! It’s the time of red and gold, lingering greens and bright oranges, all shouting in chorus, “See me now, while I’m here. Remember, a long cold winter is coming.” In our yard and the Learns’ the Espinosa trees hold long sprays of rosy-pink blooms-turned –to- seeds, waiting to assure the continuation of copious life as well as ensure our fall raking chore is cut out for us. The first hard frost will paint our lawns in silvery whiteness, the last leaves will fall and the trees will stand nakedly for several months, resting until Spring invites tiny lime green sprouts to her resurrection party. Yellow/gold/green pumpkins, squash, and gourds of every size and shape, join the autumn explosion of color. Wreaths, overflowing baskets, flower sprays, and scarecrows lining walls and aisles fill our senses to overflowing, and we search for that last corn on the cob in the grocery stores and last zucchini in the garden. Multicolored giant hydrangeas gifted by the Learns, settled into a crystal vase, grace our coffee table. Fields of pumpkins amaze us with their bumper crops. Corn- grown-tall hides mazes trampled by uncounted Halloween ghosts and goblins. Heart-felt thanksgiving, in such a season as this, comes easily. It’s the time when our families gather, tell varied versions of the family past designed to make us laugh, exchange hugs, and share inspirations and accomplishments. I sit with pen and empty sheet of paper writing the good things that fill my life. When the page can hold no more, I get another and continue my exercise in giving thanks. As I write I recognize how rich I am, and my heart lifts. I contemplate a new habit, realizing it’s difficult to be depressed while I appreciate my blessings. Won’t you join me?

Maybe the plan is to duck and dodge I have always been fascinated by words and usage. I can often tell what a speaker or writer doesn’t want me to know by the duck-and-dodge words and usage. Journalism is, in theory, centered on clear writing. There is an old adage that journalists should write for eighth-grade readers. The idea is to dumb down the copy because people can’t understand the journalist’s big words. I think that adage is dumb. Most folks I know can read copy very well, they just don’t Dennis Box want to be bored Editor or preached to by opinions masquerading as news. (Of course there are many who love opinion journalism as long as it feeds them their opinion. Suppression of the other guys’ dopey ideas is alive and growing.) What prompted this column was a news article I read about layoffs at a metro newspaper in another state. The writer quoted an executive who said the editorial reductions (that means layoffs) will come from, “non-readerfacing functions.” Non-reader-facing functions – roll that one through your brain a few times. (Careful, it may kill memory cells. The antidote is to down a tall glass of buttermilk.) Apparently that is how we be should be talking to

Despite complaints, politicians are re-elected Hours into the partial unplugging of federal government, HappyClam was anything but joyous about the feat of the nation’s elected leaders. “Our government has become an embarrassment,” the creatively named one wrote in an online comment on HeraldNet.com. “Just remember all the morons causing the problems so they can be removed from office swiftly.” Such disgust has since become measurable throughout the country. In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll conducted last week, six out of 10 people said they would vote to replace every member of Congress, including their own, if they could do so. They can’t, and if history is any indication, they won’t when the opportunity arises in the 2014 elections. Right now, 375 of the 435 House of Representative seats up for election next year are rated as “safe” for one party or the other by political science professor Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia’s Center for the Study of Politics. And only eight are tabbed as ‘toss up’ by Sabato in his well-respected “Crystal Ball,” which tracks competition in federal contests. While Americans dislike Congress

and have a tradition of saying they want to ‘kick the bums out’ it never happens, said Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball. Most of the ‘bums’ will get re-elected without much of a fight. Washington is no exception. All 10 House seats are deemed safe for the incumbent and, as of today, none of the office-holders even faces an opponent. Leaders of the state’s Republican and Democratic parties insist there’s plenty of time to recruit candidates who can mount viable challenges. They reflexively reject the suggestion their party is already conceding seats to the other’s incumbents. “As soon as the election is finished Nov. 5, that’s when we survey the landscape,” said Susan Hutchison, the state
GOP’s newly minted chairwoman. “Voters have a short attention span. They are not thinking about 2014 yet. Even the Democrats want to wait until the 2013 cycle is over.” If there is to be a battleground, it would most likely be in Washington’s 1st Congressional District, which stretches south from the Canadian border to Kirkland. It encompasses communities and farms in Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit and King counties. The state’s Redistricting Commission designed it to include as equal a number of Republican and Democratic voters as possible. Commissioners envisioned this district, more than any other, to be where the two parties could send their best gladiators to duel every two years. But rookie Democratic Congresswoman Suzan DelBene of Medina looks as comfortable an incumbent in that seat today as Democrat Rep. Jim McDermott in Seattle and Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers in Spokane. Hutchison said she’s talking with a “couple very strong candidates” who won’t decide until after the November election.

The incident wasn’t initially reported because the victim wanted to be sure the items weren’t misplaced. There were no investigative leads at the time of report.
Shoplifting: A subject was
detained without incident for shoplifting a bottle of whiskey from a grocery store on state Route 410. The subject was cited and released.

asked police to conduct a welfare check because they suspected a man may have been pressured to apply for a loan by a third party. A U.S. Postal Inspector also responded to the residence, in regards to money orders that were sent by the victim but never picked up. The victim was informed of the scam, notified the bank that he no longer wanted the loan and was reimbursed for the money orders. However, other forms of cash were also sent to the scammer, which were not recoverable.

was found shoplifting items in her purse at a SR 410 retail store. She provided the responding officer with a false phone number for her parents and was unwilling to admit that the person on the other end was not her father. The officer was able to contact her parents and verify their identity before releasing her in to their custody. Charges were forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor.

He began threatening the boy via social media, claiming he never received payment for the exchange. The aggressor was not placed in custody but the case was sent to the juvenile prosecutor.

Officers responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a building on Locust Avenue East. The vehicle was occupied by a driver and passenger, both of which exhibited signs of impairment. They were found to be in possession of and actively using drug paraphernalia. Both were issued

to the report of a home invasion in progress. The homeowner went downstairs to investigate a loud noise and he saw the intruder, who claimed he needed a ride home. The intruder fled but officers located his vehicle nearby. Police caught up to him at his residence and he was positively identified by the homeowner. He was booked in to Pierce County jail but maintained denial of his involvement.

Sometimes Help is a U-Haul Truck By Britt Nelson Director, Plateau Outreach Ministries Each holiday season Plateau Outreach Ministries uses this space to share with the community the stories of families that we have been able to help because of your generosity. Each week our volunteers and staff serve 80 to 95 families in our Food Bank and another 30 families or so who need emergency financial assistance with the most basic needs of life. Their requests are varied but often similar – food, clothing, utilities, medical prescriptions, shelter, or simply a sympathetic ear. But we have the same goal for every person or family we meet – a path out of crisis and into stability. Every story is unique. David’s is one of them. David (not his real name) is a 70-year-old veteran. He lived for 30 years in an apartment in Spokane supporting himself. He was called to come help family here on the plateau, so he moved here to live with his daughter. After a number of years here, his daughter divorced. The household disintegrated. Following the divorce, the home went into foreclosure. David stayed in the home as long as possible, with the bank showing up regularly to ask him to leave. He had no place to go. When David came to Plateau Outreach Ministries, we started looking for housing options. All of his belongings were already moved into a storage unit and he was soon to be living in his car. David was
on Medicaid and all of the senior apartment options in Enumclaw were full. As we met with David, we realized he still had friends in Spokane. We started looking for senior apartments in Spokane with Medicaid openings. Success! We found a spot and helped David begin to fill out paperwork. The story doesn't end here. David needed help not only finding a place to live, but cleaning out his storage unit, packing, moving and finding furniture for his new apartment in Spokane. As POM case managers made phone calls, one connection led to another-- a friend of a friend, someone who knew someone who could help. POM case managers and volunteers spent hours helping sort through belongings and packed boxes. A friend of David’s was willing to drive him and a U-Haul from Enumclaw to Spokane. Once he arrived in Spokane, the same friend called on a church community to help unpack and move him in. Today David is happy in his new apartment and supported by a new community. Your gifts help us to help our neighbors in very unique ways. For David it wasn't a utility bill or a rent check. It took creativity, phone calls, cleaning, packing and a U-Haul truck. Because of you we were able to help a neighbor avoid homelessness and not only move into stability, but into a new life of happiness.

Keep the holidays safe for your furry friends Welcome to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. The holiday season is here! This month we are discussing keeping your pets safe and healthy during the holidays, including the importance of not feeding table scraps to avoid stomach upset and intestinal obstructions, and reducing your pet’s anxiety. While the holidays are a time filled with spirit and festive gatherings, it can also be a very stressful time for our pets. We put together some helpful recommendations below from the American Veterinary Medical Association and ASPCA on how to plan a safe holiday for your furry family members.
Provide solitude
Guests may cramp your pet’s style, so keep their favorite place free from the holiday clamor so they can relax. If a spare room or pet crate isn’t available, think about boarding your pet for a few days if they become too anxious amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
Keep poisonous and dangerous plants away
Plants like mistletoe and poinsettia are poisonous and ingested pine needles can cause digestive tract blockage. Keep your pet from ingesting/chewing on these plants and you will likely save yourself a trip to your veterinarian or emergency vet.
Decorate safely
There are a variety of decorations that can cause problems for your pet. Ribbons and tinsel are frequently implicated in veterinary hospital bowel obstructions. Light cords, when chewed or frayed, can cause severe burns or electrocution. Prevent these mishaps by keeping decorations out of reach or secured in an inaccessible area.
Make holiday trips safe and prepare in advance
Take special precautions when traveling with your pet no matter how you choose to travel. Flying or driving over state/country lines often may require a health certificate and/or proof of vaccinations. Before departing, consult with your veterinarian/ airlines about how to properly prepare for a trip.
Table scraps aren’t pet snacks
Many holiday foods are loaded with fat and sodium and can cause stomach upset. Chicken bones can easily get stuck in the digestive tract and other foods like chocolate or onions can be poisonous. In short, people food is meant for people, not pets. Be greedy and keep it for yourself. Because chocolate can cause illness and even death in pets, it should be avoided completely. McCleary, 19, was on the undercard for the Nov. 2 Battle of the Boat 93, staged at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma. While he has just the one pro bout under his belt, McCleary is no stranger to the ring. Before fighting for a
paycheck, McCleary built an amateur record of 50-19, was a three-time Junior Golden Gloves champion on the local level and once fought his way to an eighth-place showing on the national scene. Having been in the sport for seven years, McCleary had been eyeing a transition into the professional ranks. Ensuring that basic education is fully funded and that Washington continues to receive a waiver from some federal education rules are among the most important legislative requests from State Superintendent Randy Dorn. The request package, delivered to the Legislature Nov. 1, requested $544 million in funding for the 2013 15 biennium, beyond what the Legislature appropriated in 2013. Much of that total would go toward satisfying the McCleary v. Washington court case. In January 2012, the state Supreme Court ruled that the state isn’t meeting its constitutional duty to fully fund basic education. The court imposed a 2017 deadline for full funding. Before the start of the 2013 legislative session, Dorn said that at least $1.4 billion would be needed in 2013 - 15 to give the state a reasonable “down payment” on McCleary. The Legislature increased education funding by $1 billion in 2013. “I’ve said for many months that the Legislature didn’t go far enough in 2013,” Dorn said. “A $1.4 billion investment would have put the state on the road to meeting McCleary. But $1 billion barely gets us idling in the driveway.” Dorn’s request would increase basic education spending by $461 million. The money would go toward increasing the number of schools offering state-funded full day kindergarten; reducing class sizes for students in grades 2 to 3; and increasing funding for materials, supplies and operating costs. “The Legislature doesn’t have a lot of time to meet McCleary,” he said. “If the Supreme Court’s deadline passes without full funding, thousands of students will not get the education they deserve.” Other items in Dorn’s request include:

Bonney Lake resident Lahala Phelps has been quilting for nearly 25 years and for the past 10 she has been entering her quilts into competitions. Three years ago, Phelps started making a quilting that recently won her the Robert S. Cohan Master Award for Traditional Artistry at the International Quilt Association’s annual judged show in Houston, Texas. This was the most prestigious award she has ever won for her quilts, Phelps said. The quilt that won was called “Forever in My Heart.” She said she made this quilt in memory of her mom who died from heart disease. She wanted to make a quilt she would really love, Phelps said. Almond Roca 1 pound butter 2 cups sugar 1 cup chopped almonds In a heavy pot, melt the butter, add sugar and bring to a boil. Add the
almonds and stir constantly until light brown (approximately 20 to 30 minutes). You might share this chore with someone else. Pour onto a buttered cookie sheet. Cool. Melt a large Hershey bar and spread over the top. Press with a sprinkle of shredded walnuts. Cut into squares. This is incredibly delicious stuff, but isn’t recommended for anyone planning a long lifespan.
