Holiday market offers a bounty of local wares BY SARAH LOW STAFF WRITER A staple of the holidays on Vashon for more than a decade, the farmers market will once again transform into a holiday market for the first two Saturdays in December. With up to 30 craft vendors offering their wares, wine tasting and music, this year’s markets will make holiday shopping on Vashon something to look forward to. “We have a big variety this year,” said market manager Jordan Beck, adding that almost everything at the market is gift-sized and spans the range from affordable to highend. There will be a good mix of vendors in attendance, Beck said, from some that have been with the market all season such as Azula by Design with hats and fascinators and Bliss Organix with skin products, to some that shoppers will only see at the December events, such as jeweler Michael Kenney, and there will even be some junior vendors manning booths this year. “There will be items from almost every category you can think of,” Beck said. “From things like fabrics, wood and jewelry, to
fashion accessories, candles, soap and essential oils, just to name a few.” All of the vendors are from Vashon, as the market guidelines do not allow off-island sellers unless they offer something not made on the island, Beck said. Despite produce season coming to an end, food will still be available at the holiday markets, as the vendors of prepared and processed foods will remain. Vashon Winery will also be there to offer wine tasting and sell their vintages. Musical guests for the holiday markets this year are Paul Benoit on Dec. 7 and Adena Atkins on Dec. 14. Benoit is a singer-songwriter with 20 years of performing rootsrock, pop, folk and blues and 18 albums to his credit; Atkins is another singer-songwriter who is currently working on her first full-length album after her debut EP was met with good reviews. The holiday markets will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 7, and. 14, at the old Island Variety space in the IGA Plaza.

Small spot has a lot for kids outerwear, shoes and accessories for boys and girls newborn through size 10. She combs Seattle thrift shops for most of the inventory, she said, and selects only quality and high-end brands and items that are either new or barely worn. She offers the items for just a little more than other thrift stores, she said. “You will not find something in the shop that’s torn up. We’re not a boutique, but we want that feel of a high-end shop,” she said. The inventory changes often, and she tries to stock what parents look for most, she said. She carried backpacks in September and in October stocked up on Halloween costumes and rain pants. Parents sometimes make requests, she said. A sticky note near the cash register reminds her she’s currently keeping an eye our for a pair of girls’ size 13 Bogs, which can be $60 new in stores. If she finds a good pair, she said, she’ll sell them for around $15. Each First Friday, Hathaway puts out mostly new items, and in December she’ll include a selection of used but quality children’s toys, such as wooden puzzles and dollhouses, that she has spent months collecting for the holiday season. “It’s really fun,” Hathaway said. “It feels like more fun than work.”

Islander Emma Hathaway has always been a treasure hunter. For years, she often bought clothes at thrift shops that didn’t fit anyone in her family, just to pass them on to friends or friends’ children. Now Hathaway, a Vashon native and bubbly mother of two, has turned her hunting hobby into a successful business. At Vashon Vintage Kids, she offers her finds — gently used, high-end children’s clothing and accessories — at big discounts. Hathaway shares a small storefront in town with Vashon Vintage, where her business partner Matilda Oldham sells refurbished furniture. “I just love dressing kids,” Hathaway said in an interview at the store. Since opening the kids’ shop in the summer of 2012, the business has gained quite a following among local parents, some of whom buy almost all their children’s clothing there, she said. Hathaway stocks the shelves of the cozy and colorful shop with in-season clothes,

Winterfest Weekend
Celebrate the season T
he spirit of the season will be abundant during Winterfest Weekend, when a variety of holiday happenings will provide winter cheer. Festivities will begin Friday, Dec. 6, and run throughout the weekend, with tours of art galleries and studios, holiday performances and the community tree lighting complete with Santa coming to town. The First Friday gallery walk will kick off the events, when island
galleries open from 6 to 9 p.m. The weekend of art will continue Saturday and Sunday, when art spots around the island open for the annual Holiday Art Studio Tour. The tour offers guests a chance to stop by artists’ studios, watch demonstrations and purchase one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Dancers with Vashon Allied Arts will perform the holiday classic “The Nutcracker,” four times over the weekend, with shows Friday and

Warm Season’s Greetings! Saturday and matinees Saturday and Sunday, this year for the first time at the Open Space for Arts & Community. On Saturday, downtown merchants will welcome shoppers and other guests all day as they look for gifts and drop off coupons — printed in The Beachcomber — in the hope of winning a prize from the merchants. And island crafters will have their wares at one of the season’s holiday markets in the IGA plaza. That evening, islanders and guests will be able to choose from a variety of activities, ranging from a repeat performance of “The Nutcracker” to the Vashon Island Chorale performing its annual winter concert, Ceremony of Carols (see calendar on page 10 for details.) Much to the delight of young children, Santa will come to town on Saturday evening. A parade, beginning at about 5:30 at the IGA and ending at the Village Green, will lead up to the tree lighting. Santa will stay in the Village Green this year, instead of walking about, so children can easily visit with him. Later that weekend, they can stop by for a photo, when he will be at his cottage on Sunday, Dec. 8. Throughout the weekend, merchants will host the third annual gingerbread

house tour, featuring creative gingerbread houses that reflect the spirit of the store — and the island. Last year some 25 merchants delighted with their creations, and a similar number of entries are expected again this year. The chamber of commerce hosts Winterfest Weekend, and office and events manager Sue Stinson calls the weekend, especially the night of the tree lighting, one of her favorite events of the year. “It’s our community coming together on this night, and I think that is really special,” she said. — Susan Riemer

Recently at the Vashon Bookshop, owners Nancy Katica and Morgan Guion offered their recommendations for a variety of good reads this Christmas.

Fiction Spider Woman’s Daughter by Anne Hillerman. The author is the daughter of bestselling author Tony Hillerman, and she has continued his popular Leaphorn and Chee series with this book, a Navajo country mystery that has
gotten excellent reviews. The Woman Who Lost her Soul by Bob Shacochis. Seattle librarian and author Nancy Perl calls this book, set in Haiti, “unputdownable.” At more than 600 pages, Perl called it a great American novel that says everything about America that needs to be said since World War II. TransAtlantic by Colum McCann. Set in Newfoundland in 1919, this novel tells the story of two aviators who set their course for Ireland in a modified bomber as they attempt the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic.
Non-fiction The Men Who United the States: America’s Explorers, Inventors, Eccentrics and Mavericks, and the Creation of One Nation, Indivisible by Simon Winchester. The acclaimed author looks at some of the individuals responsible for uniting a collection of disparate states, and if, in fact, their work has succeeded.

For Young Readers The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The bookshop’s Katica calls this book “very sweet and very good.” A Newbery Award winner, this novel for

Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus. This 2011 Newbery Honor Book tells the story of a crew on an 1841 Japanese fishing vessel, including a 14-year-old boy, forced to swim to a small, unknown island, where they are rescued by a passing American ship. Years later he returns to Japan with a dream of becoming a samurai.

The Nutcracker: Vashon Allied Arts Center for Dance presents this holiday staple with four performances. There will be a pre-show wine and cheese reception the second evening, with guest speaker Adam Stern, conductor of the Seattle Philharmonic. Ceremony of Carols: The Vashon Island Chorale presents its annual holiday concert with two performances. The concerts will commemorate the centenary of composer Benjamin Britten, as well as feature traditional carols for choir with flute and harp. Art Studio Tour: The Holiday Vashon Art Studio Tour will be held for four days, over two weekends — Dec. 7 and 8, 14 and 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Studio Tour, and there will be 45 studios, shops and galleries representing more than 150 artists.
