Groups ready for Thanksgiving By CELESTE ERICKSON South Whidbey Record South Whidbey will be wafting in the smells of good home cooking come Thanksgiving. Several events around the community offer something for everyone. From a quick bite at the potluck to a full meal delivered right to your door.

Meals on the go For those in need, the Mobile Turkey Unit provides free Thanksgiving meals to the doors of residents on South and Central Whidbey. This year, the unit expects to exceed the number served from last year. In 2012, the group made more than 350 dinners and this year they expect to surpass 400.

About 90 volunteers are slated to help mobilize the effort in any way they can, from drivers to potato peelers, and they are always looking for more. “Every year we look forward to serving customers and doing a good job,” said Art Taylor, president of the organization. A warm welcome to Burke Denny O’Neill born at the Greenbank Birth Center on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 to parents Blair and Patrick O’Neill of Greenbank. Burke weighed 8 pounds, 14

ounces and was 22 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Linda Bothwell, Bill Currie and Craig Denny Bothwell. Paternal grandparents are, in remembrance of Irene O’Neill and Dean Burke O’Neill. Midwife Cynthia Jaffe attended the birth.

South Whidbey Girl Scouts from Service Unit 151 collected more than 467 pounds of food this month to donate to the Good Cheer Food Bank. The scouts set up outside of grocery stores on South Whidbey on Nov. 2 and Nov. 9 to collect food. The girls braved the cold to let people know what they were doing in the community and asked for donations. About 110 girls from seven different troops participated in the drive. Initially their goal was to collect more than 200 pounds. Scout leader Ashley Messina said all of the girls were

SCHOOLS Engstrom says farewell Outgoing South Whidbey School Board Director Jill Engstrom cast her final votes Wednesday during the district’s regular board meeting. Fellow board members,

district staff and community members gathered before the meeting to bid farewell to Engstrom and share memories. Board Chairman Steve Scoles recalled when Engstrom first joined the board in the middle of a term. He said he was proud to cast the first vote for Engstrom. “It has been an honor to work with her over the

years,” Scoles said. Engstrom said she was excited to finally get some sleep once her duties are over. She also had advice for board member-elect Rocco Gianni. “You’re sworn in one day and sworn at the next,” she joked about the position. But Engstrom won’t be too far from the position. She plans to take a different seat during school board meetings — in the audience. “It’s too important not to be continuing this work,” she said. “I still care so much.” Engstrom said one of the things she was most proud of was knowing policy and her work to make revisions throughout the years. “It’s not glamorous, but policy is what governs us,” she said. “Complying is important.” She said she was also thankful for living in a devoted community which supports and makes a difference to the children in the district.

CLINTON Cold temps freeze, burst pipes

The recent cold snap caused two pipes to burst at Ken’s Korner Shopping Plaza on Tuesday. Estimates of the damage were not known by South Whidbey Fire/EMS, which responded to the commercial alarm when one of the burst pipes triggered the sprinkler system. A fire district official said no one was injured. “The water did infiltrate into some occupied spaces in the store and drained into some storage spaces underneath the mall,” said Deputy Chief Mike Cotton. “The water did a significant amount of damage.” The broken pipes were in the ceiling of unoccupied units in the shopping center, which Cotton said used to be leased by Island Dance. Temperatures dipped into the low-20s this week and stayed below 50 degrees. Cotton said the pipes were not insulated and, because of being in an unoccupied space, were not exposed to a heated area, causing them to freeze and eventually rupture. “I don’t think they turned on the heat there yet,” Cotton said. He also cautioned people with chimneys to have them inspected before having fires. LANGLEY Noble Creek purchase in flux A plan to buy an easement along Noble Creek may change after Island County overseers suggested purchasing the entire property. Langley’s planning director, Jeff Arango, told the city council during its meeting Monday that the proposal came back with the suggestion of purchasing the entire property rather than just an easement. The price difference is high, as the total property was appraised at $700,000, and the city only had a $175,000 grant for the easement of the stream, wetlands and buffer. Arango said the city could seek additional grants and funding to purchase the entire property between Edgecliff Drive and Sandy

Holiday festivities abound The Village by the Sea will be getting into the holiday swing later this month and in December. A tree lighting ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Langley Park, on the corner of Second Street and Anthes Avenue. South Whidbey fire commissioners approve budget BY BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Revenue is projected to slightly dip for South Whidbey Fire/EMS next year. Depending on how much money the district has in its end-of-year operations savings, the district may have $13,000 less to spend in 2014 than it did this year. Commissioners of South Whidbey’s fire protection district approved a budget of $3 million in revenue — that includes a 1 percent increase to the Fire/EMS levy — and $4.13 million in expenditures. The 1 percent lift is allowed under state law to keep pace with inflation and will bring in about $27,000 for the fire district. “That’s really flat,” said Chief Rusty Palmer. The big expenditure of 2014 may be the construction of a $1.3 million admin-

istration facility in Bayview. About $1 million would be paid for with money from the district’s capital fund — a special pot reserved for new construction and other related projects. But while the cost of building the district’s new headquarters has been penciled into the budget, construction next year remains iffy. Palmer had the project redesigned and said he expected to look over reworked plans around the end of the year. “Bayview’s been a 10-year project, so far,” Commission Chairman Mike Helland said. “We’ve come a long ways on that. We’re still looking at ways to bring it to fruition.” South Whidbey Fire/ EMS’s budget could slightly change by January as the district will have more financial information to analyze, including any leftover funds which could roll into 2014 or be placed in the district’s

capital fund. Currently, the district is projecting about $39,000 in end-of-year operations savings. Should the figure climb much higher, the district will need to look at its revenue again, Palmer said. “If we’re $15,000 short, we’re going to cut that,” he said. “If we’re $150,000 short, we’re going to have to look at changing the capital fund.” At the end of 2012, about $30,000 was left in the operations fund. “We’re really penny-pinching at the moment,” Palmer said. South Whidbey’s fire commissioners will look at the budget again in January for final approval.

Whidbey has problems: love it, leave it or help out Editor, I love the island and have since 1966 when we first bought property at Greenbank. Navy planes flew over our place then and still do. Doesn’t bother me. The Rhododendron, Olympic, and Kulshan are gone, but we have newer boats. Ferry workers are sloppy with their directions and sometimes rude. Ticket prices continue to increase. Traffic on 525 is bad and some drivers are downright dangerous — mostly off-islanders I’m sure — by speeding and passing where they shouldn’t. We have a county commissioner who’s a loose cannon and wants to continue her ridiculous lawsuit, even though she arrogantly did what the rest of us wouldn’t do. We have a nice hospital — been there

several times — and will now have to pay a bunch of extra taxes for several years. We have a lot to talk about before the movie starts at the Clyde. Mailbox woes

New mailbox rules are unfair, pricey Editor, The Langley United States Postal Service requires approximately 2,400 mailboxes in the Langley service area to be raised to 46 inches above the ground. To do this will require installing a taller support

post, which must be set in the ground like a fence post, i.e. a 6-foot post set in the ground about 2 feet deep. A good installation would be to set this post in dry ready-mix concrete after digging a post hole for this purpose. The cost for the post and concrete to achieve this is $6.82 — plus $2.79 for mix and 84 cents tax. One can adapt some existing boxes to this configuration without any fur-

ther material which is probably the minimal amount that most will have to spend. Factoring this up to cover 2,400 boxes means that the Langley users collectively are being required to spend over $25,000 for materials. I would suggest that in addition to the materials, the cost of procurement, logistics and labor will add an additional $25,000 to be borne by the affected users. Residents are required

to complete this change by Nov. 28. The reason for this change is not stated, however; the United States Postal Service is upgrading urban area equipment and some of the previous urban-area postal trucks are being moved

to Langley. Larger trucks require taller mail boxes. The Langley postal supervisor calls this an “insignificant project” — at least for USPS. ROBERT WATSON Langley

Gary Gabelein Volunteerism runs in his veins

Gary started 42 years ago as a fireman, and began teaching first aid to the community. That led to becoming one of the first EMTs in the district, and then helping operate a private ambulance service based in Freeland. He remembers the days when the fire trucks were a lot smaller and only carried 300 gallons of water. They rode on the outside of the truck, standing on the tailboards. He spent 16 years on the South Whidbey Fire/EMS Board of Commissioners. Gary was also actively involved with a rescue squad, responding to vehicle accidents with a “jaws of life” rig. He worked 28 years for Washington State Ferries, retiring with the rank of captain. After he and his wife Janie raised their three children, they converted their home into the Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast. As an innkeeper, he’s also active in regional tourism, volunteering on a committee promoting Whidbey and Camano Islands. For more visit:

MVP French leads Falcon flock of all-Cascade Conference athletes Imagine, Falcon football faithful, the past three seasons without Nick French playing quarterback. If he had his way back in the days when he was a Langley Middle School student, the calls would have had French on the receiving end of someone else’s passes. Falcon coaches Mark Hodson and Andy Davis should make sure they

thank their assistant coach Jeff Hanson, South Whidbey High School’s quarterback coach, for making French take snaps as a Cougar six years ago. “I didn’t want to play quarterback,” French laughed. “I wanted to play receiver.” That change proved fruitful this year, even if French only completed half of his goals for the 2013 Falcon football season. The senior quarterback missed out on a Cascade

Conference title, though his consolation prize is plenty decent; French was voted the league’s most valuable player on offense. And he wasn’t alone. Senior Nick Bennett was named a firstteam receiver and secondteam linebacker; senior Jordan Parrick a secondteam tight end; senior Beck Davis a second-team offensive lineman and honorable mention linebacker; junior Pierce Jackson a secondteam defensive lineman; senior Nate Hanson an honorable mention offensive lineman; senior Cooper Nichols an honorable mention running back; and senior Kale Reichersamer an honorable mention receiver.

With both on call as volunteers, how do they strike a balance between work and home life? Melissa did once draw a line between work and life—when she and Adam got married. The film also features several faces in the community from Moote’s life, including his family, friends, childhood pediatrician and ex-girlfriends. The film will be released on DVD in late November or early December. “I’m proud of this penis documentary,” he said. “It’s a cool project, I don’t know what it will do for my career, whether it helps or hurts.” Moote is currently working on several projects with his production company, All Mod Cons. He started the company with another Whidbey native, Jordan Albertsen. He also launched a podcast channel with his brother, Brian, called Moote Points. Moote will be on the island for a short two-day trip and available for questions before and after the showing, most likely at Mo’s, he said. “I’m not going to lie, I get more nervous about hometown screenings than any other screenings,” he said. “But I also believe in the message behind the film — that makes it easy.”

The next month or so will be a time of transition for the Port of Coupeville. A new executive director will take the helm of the district in December and a new commissioner will start his term in January. The commissioners for the Port of Coupeville this month approved an employment arrangement for Tim McDonald, who will start his tenure as executive director Dec. 1. The one-time Island County health and human services director will work as a salaried employee and earn $3,200 a month, or $38,400 a year. He won’t receive any benefits. The agreement doesn’t include a required number of hours — he has to work as long as it takes to complete his duties, current Executive Director Jim Patton said. McDonald’s contract is slightly higher than what was

A new face will soon be running the day-to-day operations of the Port of Coupeville. After a round of interviews, the commissioners for the Port of Coupeville recently named Tim McDonald as executive director for the small port district that oversees operations at the Coupeville Wharf and the Greenbank Farm. McDonald will start his position as executive director Dec. 1 and will work alongside current Executive Director Jim Patton for one month. That way McDonald can familiarize himself with the port’s operations before Patton’s contract expires. McDonald has a long history of working in Island County government. He was the director of health and human services from 1987-2008. He was most recently the director of the division of communicable diseases and emer-

Whether buying or selling a home, your moving date will be an important consideration. Also called the “possession date”, it is one of the items which is negotiated and included in the contract of sale. Possession dates are most often established in relation to the “closing date”, the date on which the purchase money is paid and the title transfers to the purchasers. In a contract, the possession date may read “upon transfer of title and disbursement of funds”, or merely “at closing.” Is possession always given at closing? Not necessarily. Remember, it is negotiable. It can be whatever date is acceptable to both buyers and sellers. The possession date may be “fourteen days after closing” or “seven days prior to closing.” Notice that possession is still relative to the closing date. If possession occurs on any date other than at closing, a short term lease agreement should be prepared. It should include the amount of any rent to be paid, what happens if the sale is not consummated, who is responsible for damage or needed repairs during the lease, etc. All agreements related to possession should be in writing. Any changes made after the contract has been signed should also be reduced to writing and signed by all parties.

At the food bank The Good Cheer Food Bank is also seeing an increase in meals for the month of November with more than 1,000 families in need, which is a small increase from 980 families in 2012. With a tighter crunch, the food bank is hoping to receive more donations through a food drive at the Goose. Customers can buy a turkey at the register to donate to Good Cheer for $15 through the month of December. Food bank manager Karen Korbelik said with many volunteers going away for the holidays, the food bank is in need of more volunteers in the winter. “It’s a lovely time to remember that we have the ability to give back,” she said. “I love my job this time of the year,” she said. “It’s touching to hear people’s stories who come in and volunteer.
