Auburn’s mayoral race remains too close to call from early returns in Tuesday night’s general election. City Councilmember and Deputy Mayor Nancy Backus holds the early edge over City Councilmember John Partridge. Backus, seeking to become Auburn’s first female mayor, received 4,014 votes

in the combined total of King and Pierce counties to John Partridge’s 3,668 – a 53.2 to 47.8 percent margin. And with only 346 votes separating the two, Tuesday’s leader wasn’t quite ready to call the race her’s nor the fellow trailing ready to call, concede and congratulate. The costly fallout from recalled mayor Cy Sun’s disastrous administration in Pacific continues to affect the City. The Pacific City Council was informed at its Oct. 28 regular meeting that more than $1.2 million in construction grants earmarked for transportation improvements in the city had been rescinded by the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC).

“I was looking over the status of various funds that had been awarded to the City over the past few years and there was $611,967 from the Puget Sound Regional Council that had not been dispersed in a timely manner,” said City Engineer Jim Morgan. According to PSRC spokesperson Anne Avery, the grant – $651,238 intended for trail improvements on the north side of Stewart Road – was rescinded [ more GRANTS page 9 ]

It is protocol, not justice. It is abusive, dishonorable, unacceptable. Women serving in the military are raped and abused, and it needs to stop. Now, not later. So says Auburn’s Sarah Blum. Blum, a decorated Vietnam surgical nurse, served with the 25th Infantry Division in 1967 at the 12th Evacuation Hospital in bleeding South Vietnam at the height of the war. Today she is an advocate for the rights of women in the military and a practicing psychotherapist. For more than 28 years she has worked with PTSD and trauma resolution. Blum, 73, also is a noted author whose newly released book, “Women Under Fire: Abuse in the Military” (Brown Sparrow Publishing), takes a hard, fine-grained look at the pervasive culture of violence and sexual abuse toward women in the U.S. military. Blum is taking her book on an exhaustive national tour. She speaks on Veterans Day at the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 20th anniversary of the memorial’s dedication. As part of her crusade, Blum plans to visit leaders in the nation’s capital to discuss the issue of military sexual assault. She vows to educate the public and inspire action from Congress to end the culture of abuse toward women in the military. Her message is loud, clear, uncompromising. “All of this must stop. It’s time for accountability to prevail,” Blum said at her book launch party in Des Moines last Saturday. “There is and has been a failure of leadership in our military. And it must be rectified. It’s time to fully investigate this abuse culture, clean house and begin anew with appropriate policies and actions that restore honor, integrity and accountability to our military and bring justice to our women serving.” To write the book, Blum interviewed more than 50 women veterans over seven years. Unnecessary suffering, death of a stray cat I found a stray cat on my front porch last Sunday. It was in very bad shape and suffering. I called Auburn Animal Control, and the message I got was to call the Auburn Police Department’s non-emergency number. I called and the dispatcher told me to call animal control. I told her I was referred to the police department as no animal control officer was on duty. I called the Auburn Emergency Clinic for animals, and the person who answered the phone told me there was nothing they could do as it was a stray. I am guessing they were only going to treat an injured animal if they got paid. I tried to care for the cat but it was in such bad shape I could do nothing to stop the suffering.

When King County Animal Control covered Auburn at least we could have something like this handled, and the animal might have made it or at least would not have suffered for a long period of time and died. Everyone who did not help in this matter that I contacted should be ashamed. Animals should not have to suffer like this one did.

Muckleshoot Tribe acquires White River Forest property For the Reporter

The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe today announced the acquisition of 86,501 acres of the White River Forest that lies on both sides of Highway 410 between Enumclaw and Greenwater, and 9,806 acres of forest land in northern Lewis County, from White River Forests LLC. The transaction closed Tuesday. “This acquisition is another important step toward the

Tribe’s goals of increasing our land base, reacquiring portions of our homeland and diversifying our economy,” said Muckleshoot Tribal Council Chair Virginia Cross. “The Tribe looks forward to managing this land for the primary purpose of long-term sustainable timber harvest, while preserving natural values, including fish and wildlife habitat, plant resources and areas of cultural importance. With just 460 ballots from 2,923 registered voters in Pacific (15.40 percent) counted, all four races are still too close to call. Initial results have incumbent Councilmember John Jones holding a 13-vote lead over challenger Brice Erickson – 222 votes (51.39 percent) to 209 (48.38 percent) in the race for Position No. 2. In the Position No. 5 race, featuring newcomers Stacy May Knudtson and Gary Nitschke, Knudtson holds the edge, 254 votes (58.26 percent) to 180 (41.28 percent). In the Position No 7 race, incumbent City Council President Tren Walker leads Ronnie M. Harris, 280 votes (66.84 percent) to 139 (33.02 percent). And in the Position No. 4 contest, challenger Vic Kave leads Leanne Guier, 236 votes (54.13 percent) to 199 (45.64 percent). Family, special school open new world of communication for boy school districts throughout the Puget Sound Region – from Hood Canal to the Cascades, from Auburn/Kent Valley to Skagit Valley – to provide free education and transportation to qualifying students. In his young life Nathan Spencer has already overcome many challenges. Four years ago he was found wandering in a park in his native China, abandoned and alone. Deaf and with meagre communication skills, he also had no name. “They found him in the park on Nov. 9, but his actual birthday is unknown,” said Lisa Spencer, his adoptive mother. The boy was 6 years old, authorities estimated, when the Spencers officially adopted and brought him to Auburn. The Spencers earlier adopted a girl, Emily, now 4. Nathan turns 10 on Sunday – a birthday the family decided on, one day after his discovery in the park in 2009. “He’s an amazing child,” Lisa said. “He’s made some amazing strides. My husband (Art) and I truly believed we were going to raise him in the deaf community,

Auburn students selected for honor band clinic For the Reporter

Auburn High School band students Mikah Loomis, Austin Clark and Madeleine Jones recently auditioned for and were selected to participate in the Western International Band Clinic (WIBC) honor band on Nov. 22-25 at the Sea-Tac Doubletree hotel. Sammantha Hall was selected as an alternate. Loomis, Clark and Hall play the clarinet and Jones plays the flute. The audition process included each student recording two pieces of music that were evaluated by a panel of professional musicians and educators at the WIBC who selected the participants. During the four-day clinic, students play in one of four bands directed by world renowned composers, educators and conductors. The culmination of the clinic is a gala concert of the honor bands.

Lucille M. Shamley was born in Auburn, WA, April 24, 1950; passed away October 21, 2013 in Springfield, OR. Lucy graduated in 1968 from Auburn High School. She attended NW Christian College in Eugene, OR graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree (Which was unusual for a woman at the time). She spent the past 25 years working at Pearl Buck Center as a supervisor. Lucy was a member at Powerhouse Faith Center in Springfield. She is survived by her sisters Toni Rogers, Patty Brooks, Anita Kildare and two brothers David and Raymond Shamley. She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Rita Shamley. Lucille will be laid to rest at Mt.View Cemetery in Auburn. 910020

Florence Louise Langhorne

Florence Louise Langhorne went home to God on November 3, 2013 after a battle with cancer. She was strong in her Christian Faith, an advocate for those in need and passionate about her large extended family. She brought many new lives into the world as an obstetric nurse for Auburn General Hospital and cared for elderly friends when they had few to turn to. Florence was the bedrock for her family and will be terribly missed. She is survived by her six children and their spouses: Sandra, Kathie (Doug), Robert Jr., Michael, Nancy (Rick) and James. She leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. All were the loves of her life. There will be a memorial service Saturday November 9th, 1:00pm at Grace Community Church in Auburn, WA to remember Florence. All those who were touched by this remarkable woman are invited to attend. Soon Leach took to the stage again, forming the band Seemless with an allstar lineup of New England metal musicians, including Derek Kerswill and Pete Cortese. “These great musicians I knew that had a great reputation and good ideas send me a CD and it was very much like Soundgarden, stoner rock stuff and I just thought it would be cool to do that for fun,” he said. “No pressure, just play some bars, play some rock and roll and do some music. I was ready for it.” Eventually Leach found his way back into a band with Dutkiewicz, forming Times of Grace. In 2012, however, after three albums and almost a decade with Killswitch Engage, Jones announced he was leaving the band, opening the door for Leach’s return. “I didn’t initially think I was the guy for the job so I turned it down at first,” he said. “I wasn’t sure if I

This Tuesday the ShoWare Center in Kent offers up a quadruple dose of metal madness with the Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Testament and Huntress tour swinging into town for a one-night stand. Although all four bands faithfully mine the traditional metal standards, featuring screaming distorted guitars, thundering drums and dynamic vocals, each band brings its own slant on the genre. From Lamb of God’s brutality, to Killswitch Engage’s metalcore mix of hardcore punk and heavy metal, to Testament’s old school thrash to the more traditional swords and sorcery themes dredged up by Huntress, the show features something for every metal head. “You get four different bands that have four very different styles, and it’s all gelling and working together,” Killswitch Engage vocalist Jess Leach said. “And the fans have been amazing.” Although Leach’s

bandmates in Killswitch Engage - guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D’Antonio, drummer Justin Foley and guitarist Joel Stroetzl - may be used to the big time spectacle of an arena co-headlining tour, courtesy of their successful decade-plus career, it’s all new to Leach. After helping co-found the band and releasing two albums, 2000’s eponymous release and 2002’s critically acclaimed “Alive or Just Breathing”, Leach left the band. “I had a breakdown on tour and went through a pretty deep depression,” he said. “I wasn’t confident with my instrument or as a person. It’s one thing growing up wanting to be in a band and wanting to tour, and then when you hit the road it’s different than what you expected. I don’t think I was prepared back then for the lifestyle and the toll it takes on your mind. BECU to relocate Auburn Neighborhood Financial Center With the decision by TOP Food and Drug to close its Auburn store, BECU will relocate the Neighborhood Financial Center located inside the store. BECU closes the current location within the TOP Food store at 1702 Auburn Way N. at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7. BECU opens at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9 a new temporary location

at 120 Cross Street, next to MultiCare Clinic and Grocery Outlet. “We are in the process of finding a new permanent location in the Auburn area,” said Kathy Hajny, BECU Auburn NFC manager. A pair of fumbles on crucial drives doomed Auburn last Friday as Auburn Riverside soared to a 20-7 victory over the Trojans in the Fugate Trophy game at Auburn Memorial Stadium. The win earns a postseason berth for the Ravens (7-1 South Puget Sound League North 4A, 7-2 overall), who host WesCo 4A No. 2 Cascade (8-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday for a chance to move on to the state playoffs. For Auburn (5-3, 5-4), who came in knotted up at 5-2 with Jefferson and Tahoma in the SPSL 4A standings, the loss leaves the Trojans the odd team out for two playoff berths. Against Auburn Riverside, the Trojans started strong, putting together a nine play, 80-yard drive capped by senior quarterback Brier Atkinson’s 1-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter. The Ravens responded in the second quarter, capitalizing on an Auburn fumble to put up three points on a Brandon Stark’s 31-yard field goal. Auburn Riverside added two touchdowns in the second quarter, with Cole Huckaby running one in from 7 yards out and Kevin Thomson finding Gavin Hettinger in the corner of the end zone for a 29-yard scoring play. In the second half, the Ravens closed out scoring with Starks booting a field goal from 44 yards out in the third quarter, pegging the final at 20-7. “This means more than anything,” Auburn Riverside coach Bryant Thomas said. “That was my message all week long: this is more important than the playoffs. They deserve it. That trophy left us for one year and now it’s back.” The Trojans finish up their season with a crossover game against SPSL South 4A Rogers (3-5, 4-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Auburn Mountainview fades against Bonney Lake 35-28 Reporter Staff

Auburn Mountainview gave up 21 third-quarter points to Bonney Lake last Thursday, losing 35-28 to the Panthers in South Puget Sound League 3A action at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. After taking a 21-14 lead into the fourth quarter, the Lions (2-3 league, 2-7 overall) allowed Bonney Lake (4-1, 4-5) to claw its way back into the game in the fourth, where the Panthers outscored Auburn Mountainview 21-7.

For the Lions, sophomore quarterback Gresch Jensen was 29-of-47 for 276 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Jensen also led the team’s rushing attack with 16 carries for 113 yards and a TD. Senior Ray Hardaway had 13 carries for 50 yards and caught a touchdown pass.
