During a gathering in August that celebrated the life of Sundberg, a close friend announced that a memorial fund was created, making way for what will be known as the Trudy J. Sundberg Memorial Lecture Series. The plan is to bring a prominent speaker to Whidbey Island once a year and build other events around the visit. The idea evoked joy from Sundberg’s family, yet also just a hint of sadness.

Oak Harbor voters support the incumbent members of the City Council, according to the first count of ballots Tuesday night. It was also a good night for Whidbey General Hospital as the bond proposal appears to be passing. Councilmen Bob Severns, Joel Servatius, Jim Campbell and Danny Paggao are all ahead of their challengers in the election. The incumbents say the voters’ message is clear. “I think we are doing the right thing and the voters approve,” Paggao said shortly after election results were posted at about 8:20 p.m. “I do believe the citizens are satisfied with the council,” Severns said, “and are wanting to move the city forward. Campbell, however, noted one race is too close to call. Servatius, appointed to the position, has a narrow 60-vote lead over challenger Sandi Peterson. As of last night’s tally, Servatius had 1,370 votes, or 51 percent, and Peterson 1,310 votes, or 49 percent. “Sixty votes is a drop in the bucket,” Campbell said. “That could change quickly.” Campbell said he is com-

fortable with his lead over challenger Skip Pohtilla. Campbell has 1,477 votes, or 56 percent, while Pohtilla has 1,154, or 44 percent. Severns also leads over newcomer Lucas Yonkman. Severns has 1,656 ballots cast in his favor, or 61 percent, while Yonkman earned 1,068 votes, or 39 percent. Paggao solidly leads challenger Mike Piccone by 1,500 votes, or 56 percent, to Piccone’s 1,180, or 44 percent. Whidbey General Hospital bond supporters were celebrating Tuesday night as preliminary results show the bond passing with more than a 60 percent supermajority. Initial results showed the bond was passing with 61.75 percent voter approval. This is the second time the hospital district attempted to pass the $50 million bond to expand and upgrade the aging facility. “The returns so far show that well over half our community supports it (the bond) and we hope the 61.75 percent holds,” said Trish Rose, public relations and marketing director for the hospital. “This is important and we’ll ensure our local community hospital is a highquality local hospital on Whidbey.”

Hospital passing; OH council races tight

“THIS IS one of the most incredible ways to honor mom,” said Sundberg’s daughter, Jan Whitsitt. “The sad thing is she would have wanted to be at the lecture.” In a little more than two months, $41,000 already has been raised, just $9,000 shy of the entire first-year goal. Retired Oak Harbor physician Marshall Goldberg, who became friends with Sundberg during her latter years, hatched the plan and worked with Oak Harbor managing librarian Mary Campbell and the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation to set up the memorial endowment. For Goldberg, it was a fitting way to honor and keep alive the memory of an extraordinary Oak Harbor woman who impacted and inspired him and so many others on Whidbey Island. SUNDBERG, a teacher, civic leader, author, debate coach, founder of several organizations, mother and grandmother, passed way on June 29 at the age of 88. She was known for her boundless energy, a zest for learning and engaging with her community. “In her 88 years, she probably had four lives,” Goldberg said. Sundberg’s life revolved around a

Marijuana sellers angered by proposed moratorium By JANIS REID Staff reporter

Tempers flared during a public hearing Monday as several residents expressed their dislike of a proposed sixmonth moratorium on new marijuana distribution and production businesses. As a result, Island County commissioners voted to table the action until a work session Wednesday, Nov. 6. Several business owners, some of whom are already producing medical marijuana, told the commissioners they believe that the proposed moratorium on new businesses would put Island County behind the rest of the state, causing them to miss out on key application deadlines. It was the intention of the board to follow the lead of the City of Oak Harbor, which adopted its own six-month moratorium in September without opposition. The moratoriums are a response to a state law created with the passage of Initiative 502, which legalized recreational marijuana, but with many restrictions. How those rules translate at a local level remains to be determined. Speakers at the commissioners’ hearing claimed the moratorium would block their ability to start or expand their businesses. Some said they would lose licensing opportunities to neighboring counties which are moving forward

more quickly. The state starts accepting business applications on Nov. 18. “You don’t have the landowners side on this,” said Camano Island resident Cynthia Jensen. “I have several emails from the planning department saying that there should be no reason why I can’t use my land for I-502.” “Now, two weeks before we are to make application, and we have a 30-day window, the rug is pulled out from under us.” After the public input portion was closed, frustrated residents occasionally shouted out questions and comments. Commissioner Jill Johnson warned those speaking out of turn would be asked to leave. A few commented that they believed continuing to limit legal marijuana distribution was contributing to the crime associated with black market drugs. “Right now if you go by the national average, we have 16,000 who smoke marijuana in Island County,” said John Youngblood of Oak Harbor. “They have no access to getting the marijuana, except on the black market, that fuels meth.” “You fuel the black market, you fuel all the things that go with it. Right now its just heaven for drug dealers and cartels. I’m totally against this,” he said. “Dropping this in our laps at the last minute doesn’t

Others worried that a moratorium would delay or limit their ability to be approved for a license by the state, or if the

Johnson said she wants more solid information from the state Liquor Control Board and also revisit the moratorium timeline. “It’s very important to me as a commissioner is to take the time to get this right,” Johnson said. “I understand people’s frustration as it appears we have had this for a year, but we have not had this for a year.” “The state of Washington has had this for a year, Island County has had it for 60 days.” Price Johnson said she would advocate a shorter moratorium period and wants to know if adopting a moratorium would translate into lost licenses for the county. Commissioner Kelly Emerson was initially listening to the meeting by phone, but lost connection prior to the moratorium discussion. She was excused. After commissioners voted to table the decision, several attendees went outside. What followed was a heated discussion with Island County Sheriff Mark Brown. Residents wanted to know how conducting a legal recreational marijuana business would be more dangerous than liquor sales or other types of high-cash businesses. Brown said he had concerns about burglaries and money transportation. From a public safety standpoint, Brown said it was “incumbent on us (Island County) to make sure all our ducks in a row.”

N. Whidbey events to salute local vets By JANIS REID Staff reporter

Events are planned locally in recognition of Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. The second annual Veterans Day Parade is 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 and is estimated to last 45 minutes. The parade is the brainchild of local veteran Terry Lacey. After attending a similar event, Lacey said he decided Oak Harbor should produce one as well. “In 2011, I participated in the Burlington Veterans Day Parade and immediately asked, ‘why don’t we have a Veterans Day parade’ in Oak Harbor?, and no one seemed to have an answer other than, ‘the weather in November,’” Lacey said. Parade route will run west from Midway Boulevard and Pioneer Way to State Highway 20, ending in front of Ace Hardware. Similar to last year, the parade will include approximately 50 fallen hero banners featuring the names and faces of a local fallen servicemen and women. Grand marshal of this year’s parade will be Olga Belevich Evans, who served as an Army Air Corps flight nurse, during World War II. Evans was one of approximately 1,500 army flight nurses in this country’s history. She served for two years, one month, and 13 days, from July 1, 1943 to Aug. 13, 1945. She was issued an Honorable Service Lapel Button when she was discharged as a first lieutenant. “As a first generation American, mom was very proud to serve in the United States Army Air Corps as a flight nurse during World War II, said her daughter, Deborah Dinger. “She is so pleased to have been selected to be the 2013 grand marshal of Oak Harbor’s Veteran’s Day Parade.” “She will, once again, don her uniform with great pride.” Also on Saturday, the Disabled American Veterans of Whidbey Island, Local Chapter No. 47 will conduct its annual “Forget-MeNot” drive 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout Oak Harbor. Donations from the drive go to the DAV’s transportation program and the purchase of a new van, which is needed to transport veterans to the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Seattle. On Monday, a ceremony honoring veterans will take place at the traditional 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month at the

Veteran’s Memorial, located next to the Island County Commissioners Hearing Room at the county campus on Northeast Sixth Street in Coupeville. During the ceremony, volunteers will unfurl flags representing each of the Armed Forces, the Merchant Marine as well as prisoners of war/missing in action and the United States flag. At 11:11 a.m. the nearby Methodist Church will ring the bell. Veterans Day is based on the date hostilities ended in World War I, Nov. 11, 1918. Also at 11 a.m. Monday, the Oak Harbor Area Council and the Navy League is sponsoring the ninth annual Veterans Day “A Musical Salute to our Veterans” at the Oak Harbor High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is free. The program features musical performances by the An-O-Chords barbershop chorus, the Daybreak Trio, Oak Harbor High School’s Harbor Singers and Treble Choir, and the All-Island Community Band. Guest speaker will be Capt. Mike Nortier, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station commanding officer.

WGH Auxiliary shop runs on volunteers

Local wares, handmade merchandise and other treasures can be found in every nook and cranny By SARA HANSEN Staff Reporter

When asking someone where they got their accessories, it might be surprising when they say the Whidbey General Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. “It’s one of the best kept little shopping secrets,” said Michelle Suggs, hospital gift shop manager. “Every nook and cranny is filled here.” The gift shop has always been run by volunteers, and the profits are collected by the WGH Auxiliary and used to help the hospital purchase equipment it needs. The funds raised have gone to help purchase the new Breast MRI scanner, and also improve the birth center. “Everyone is a volunteer and has been for a long time,” Suggs said. “It’s a congenial, wonderful group of ladies.” Suggs said the volunteers try their best to offer local items for customers to purchase in the shop. The store sells soaps and lotions from Oak Harbor Soap Company; books by the late Dorothy Neil, a longtime columnist for the Whidbey NewsTimes, cards by Patty Picco; and chocolates from Sweet Mona’s in Langley. “We try to be a service to the community, and do what we can for local products,” Suggs said. It’s not just artists or purveyors that supply the local wears. Community members also donate their talents to the shop. One gentlemen in Coupeville makes wooden toys for the shop. Currently

Offer your ‘thanks’ to those who have served our country With the holiday season just around the corner, Veterans Day is a time for us to pause and take a moment to recognize the sacrifices others have made so that we may enjoy our freedoms. Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and, starting this weekend, there are several ways you can honor American military veterans and the victims of all wars. Not surprisingly, Whidbey Island is home to many service veterans. In a patriotic show of respect, Oak Harbor is holding its annual Veterans Day parade at 2 p.m., Saturday along Midway Boulevard and Pioneer Way. The parade will include banners featuring the images of 50 fallen heroes. Grand Marshal of this year’s parade in Oak Harbor is Olga Belevich Evans, who served as a flight nurse in World War II. Evans was one of approximately 1,500 army flight nurses in this country’s history. She served for two years, one month, and 13 days, from July 1, 1943 to Aug. 13, 1945. She was issued an Honorable Service Lapel Button when she was discharged as a first lieutenant. Also on Saturday there will be a “Forget-Me-Not” drive conducted by the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. Vets will be selling the trademark blue flower 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at locations throughout Oak Harbor. Proceeds from the annual fund-raising drive will go toward the group’s programs and transportation needs. On Monday, Veterans Day will be observed with a solemn ceremony honoring veterans outside the Island County Commissioner’s Hearing Room in Coupeville. On a lighter note, an entertaining affair will be offered 11 a.m. Monday when “A Musical Salute to our Veterans” is performed at Oak Harbor High School by students and groups such as the An-OChords barbershop chorus, Daybreak Trio and the All-Island Community Band. NAS Whidbey Commander Capt. Mike Nortier will be guest speaker. These are some of the ways you can help honor America’s veterans. However, if nothing else, offering a veteran a “thank you, for serving” will undoubtedly be appreciated.

Syrian crisis marks historical moment Editor, Major historical moments sometimes pass almost unnoticed. We witnessed not only a major breakthrough in addressing tensions in the Middle East, but perhaps a major breakthrough in how our planet might better address lawlessness and crisis.

Surprisingly it was not national governments that instigated the change, but ordinary people across the globe are forcefully calling for diplomacy and the rule of law rather than military intervention in addressing the crime of the use of chemical weapons. British Parliament refused to support their Prime Minister’s call to back the U.S. in using military strikes against Syria. Most other countries’ governments agreed. President Obama and the U.S. Congress took the cue from a deluge of calls opposing military strikes against Syria and the risk of yet another war. President Obama engaged Congress before unilaterally allowing an act of war. And the Russian government applied diplomacy in See Letters, A7

calling for Syria to relinquish its chemical weapons. All this happened so quickly, so amazingly, that the press and most of us were not able to take it sufficiently in. And now, in perhaps an even more important matter, President Obama has broken a 34-year silence between the U.S. and Iran by making a call and engaging in a diplomatic effort to address nuclear disarmament and improving relations between the two countries and thus the whole of the Mideast. And perhaps most important of all, we are all now more aware of the importance of the rule of international law, cooperation and accountability to ourselves as a whole planet, not just as exceptional, entitled individual nations. Violence and war are not effective answers to addressing injustice. What works is abiding by just laws, accountability for those who break them, and

many people could hold a candle to Lynne. An $8,000 swim fee for Lynne’s children who live at home, seems extreme to me. Is it any wonder that all children do not have equal opportunity in the U.S.A., when parents are charged so much? Barbara Anne Coffin Barbara Anne Coffin was born in Kirkland, Wash. on Jan. 19, 1933 to George and Jane Bradshaw. She passed away at her home in Oak Harbor on Oct. 27, 2013. She was a resident of Whidbey Island for most of her life, graduating from Coupeville High School and attending the University of Washington. She lived for her family, as a loving mother and friend. Barbara is survived by her five children: John W. Coffin, B. Cynthia Coffin, Kenneth C. Coffin, Vicki L. Skilbeck and Debbie J. Branco; brother, Ted Bradshaw and sister, Joan Lundberg. Kelly Sellers Kelly Renee Sellers passed away Oct. 7, 2013 in Oak Harbor at the age of 54. She was born in San Diego on Feb. 21, 1959 to Roger and Lynn Lawson. The eldest of three children, she is survived by her brother Randal Lawson and her sister Stacy Gomes, as well as their children Meisha Lawson and DeLanie Gomes.

Her first daughter, Dajah Beck, was born on her own birthday in 1983. She was married to the love of her life, Chester Sellers, on Dec. 16, 1989, and they retired to Oak Harbor shortly thereafter. Her second daughter, Jaden Sellers was born on July, 23 1990, and she welcomed her son, Zack Sellers on Sept. 22, 1994. Chester lost his battle with Leukemia in 1995, and Kelly dedicated the rest of her life to caring for her children. Kelly was also dedicated to helping others. During her 20 years on Whidbey Island she opened her heart and home to countless adults and adolescents in need. She was a mother to many, and provided a second home to dozens of her children’s friends — all of whom remember her with love. She was a fighter for those who could not defend themselves, a champion of the rights of animals, and a loyal friend. She had a quick wit, a kind heart and a killer wardrobe. She could beat anyone in a bowling alley or a pair of roller skates, and left an impressive collection of rock n’ roll history from her youth (you’ve never seen so many back-stage passes). We will love and miss her for the rest of our lives. A private memorial will be held on Nov. 10. Please contact her family for fur-

Give the game ball to the defense. Five times Meadowdale started drives in Oak Harbor territory but scored only once as the Wildcats defeated the Mavericks 27-8 Friday, Nov. 1, at Edmonds Stadium. Oak Harbor (7-2) earned the Western Conference’s third seed and a playoff home game with the win. The Wildcats face another band of Wildcats, hosting Mount Si at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. Mount Si, ranked fifth in the state, lost only once this year, 52-13 to No. 1 in Washington and nationallyranked Bellevue. Meadowdale (5-4) won the field position battle but couldn’t overcome Oak Harbor’s hard-hitting defense. The Wildcats forced four turnovers. The Mavericks began drives at the Oak Harbor 43-, 29-, 39-, 30- and 40-yard lines. Four of those came in the first five drives of the second half. In part to excellent punting by Meadowdale’s Taylor Linton, Oak Harbor started just one drive better than its own 29 and had eight begin from the 20 in. The game’s first points were scored on the first play of the second quarter when a snap on an Oak Harbor punt attempt sailed out of the end zone for a safety.

and they came during this drive. The second went for 48 yards and a touchdown with 3:06 left in the half. The second half started with a huge gamble. On fourth and a half yard from

its own 29, Oak Harbor went for it and was stuffed. Meadowdale took advantage and scored, making it 13-8. The Wildcats then fumbled and Meadowdale drove to the 4-yard line. On the next

play the Mavericks fumbled and Oak Harbor recovered in the end zone. Midway through the final period, Harris intercepted a Jeremiah Evans pass and returned it 45 yards to Maverick 23. Two plays later Faralan scored from the 17 and Oak Harbor led 20-8 with 3:06 left in the game. Dejon Devroe added another interception during Meadowdale’s next possession and returned it to the Maverick 29. Princeton Lollar, a freshman seeing his first varsity action, ran 25 yards for the game’s final touchdown with 1:40 left. Mark Johnston kicked his third PAT. The Wildcat defense held Meadowdale to only 16 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Evans and Caleb Tingstad, who played the final series, combined to complete only 13 of 34 passes for 167 yards. Oak Harbor head coach Jay Turner said the key to the game was getting pressure on Evans. The Wildcats went with a cover-zero look (no free safety) much of the game and succeeded in harassing Evans. “We rolled the dice and sometimes you get lucky,” Turner said. Oak Harbor rushed for 260 yards, led by Faralan with 80 on 21 carries. Devroe added 61 yards on 16 tries, while Harris had 45 and Lollar 47 on seven carries each.

Wildcats earn state CC berth For the fifth consecutive year, the Oak Harbor High School girls cross country team qualified for the state meet by placing third at the district championships at Lakewood High School Saturday, Nov. 2. The Wildcat boys had their three-year string of state trips snapped, but John Rodeheffer won the individual title. The top three teams and the top 15 individuals earned state spots. The Oak Harbor girls placed third in the 11-team meet with 72 points. Glacier Peak defended its team title with 43 points, and Mountlake Terrace grabbed second with 51. The Wildcat boys finished fourth with 92 points, 27 points behind third-place Glacier Peak. Shorewood took the title with 48 points, and Mountlake Terrace scored 62 to snag second. Jonalynn Horn (19:14.41) paced the Wildcat girls by finishing fifth. Alex Laiblin, who fol-

lowed in sixth, ran a 19:27.68 even though she had to stop at one point and retreat to pick up her timing chip which fell off. Laura Rodeheffer (15th, 20:14.49), Marisa Sligh (22nd, 21:15.83), Kaitlyn Chelberg (26th, 21:40.41), Suzanne Kaltenbach (22:15.99) and Carolynn Wicker (43rd, 22:51.75) also ran for Oak Harbor in the field of 72. The state finals are Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The 3A girls run at 12:30 p.m. and the boys at 2 p.m.

New roots for North Whidbey tree farm After three-year closure, tradition to resume at newly named tree farm By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

It sometimes still feels a little surreal for Mike and Tricia Miller. At sunrise some days, they’ll step outside with a cup of coffee in hand and can scan acres of farmland and gaze at a magnificent view of Crescent Harbor at the end of a downward slope. It can be hard to believe sometimes that this is their property and their home. “Every morning is a different view,” Tricia said. Feelings of peace and serenity, however, also come with the occasional twinge of panic. As in, a realization of what they got themselves into. The home they bought in 2011 is surrounded by a forest of Christmas trees. For two years, they’ve been soaking up knowledge, moving earth, grooming land and preparing for a day that’s coming at the end of this month. On Nov. 29, the Millers plan to re-open a tree farm that since the mid-1980s has been a place of fond holiday memories for many residents on North Whidbey. Known for nearly three decades as WoodBee Christmas Tree Farm, the Millers are rekindling an old tradition with a new business name, Pacific Winds Farm. The tree farm, located at 2870 Torpedo Road in Oak Harbor, was closed for business the past three holiday seasons. “We didn’t even own a mower when we bought the place,” Tricia said. “We didn’t even have a push mower.” Nor did they have much expertise on how to care for fir trees. What they did possess, however, was a zest to learn, a zeal to overcome challenges and a dream to some day turn this farm into their living heading into their retirement years. Both are 42 and in Oak Harbor because of the Navy. Mike, from Chicago, is active duty after 24 years and is a maintenance master chief at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Tricia, who grew up on a farm in Kentucky, spent four years in the Navy. Setting roots on Whidbey Island only seemed fitting. It’s their third time back living on Whidbey since meeting in

Hawaii in 1997 and each time a major life event took place. After getting married on the old Morris Farm in Coupeville in 1998, the Millers took up residency in Maine, Japan and California. But as it turned out, both of their sons, Noah, now 13, and Liam, 9, were born during their stays on Whidbey at Naval Hospital Oak Harbor, delivered by the same doctor. “We asked them, ‘When you think of where home is, what’s home?’” Tricia said. “They said, ‘Whidbey.’” “We got married here, we had both of our kids here,” Mike said. “We considered Whidbey home. We always wanted to move back here.” And when they noticed a newer home on 15 acres for sale on familiar property in 2011, they were intrigued. “What’s funny about it is we used to bring our kids here,” Mike said. The Millers bought the property, and in a separate purchase a year later, purchased 10 additional acres adjacent to their land that included the bulk of the tree farm and the

business. With that additional land came a forest of trees, a tree shaker, outbuildings and the same red sleigh in which his kids sat in when they were younger. The Millers are the third owner of the tree farm. Chuck and Gail Jaeger started the business in 1984 and ran the tree farm until 2005 when it was sold to Dave Grace. They still live on the land next to the Millers and have watched their progress in getting the business back up and running. Ironically, the farm rests on the original donation land claim awarded to early Oak Harbor pioneer Caleb Miller in the 19th century. There’s no relation. “We’re very excited,” Gail Jaeger said of the tree farm’s new owners. “They are a young energetic couple. They’ve got a couple of nice little boys. Actually, they’re about the same age we were when we finally opened.” The work hasn’t been easy for the Millers. There was an aphid infestation that led to a mass removal of trees, and weeds that needed to be hand-

But the farm has taken shape, with help from a conservation group, tree farm association, hired tree trimmers and a lot of hard

work by the Millers. “They’ve done a fantastic job preparing to re-open the farm,” Chuck Jaeger said. “The quality of trees I’ve seen look the best I’ve seen since we owned it. It makes us happy knowing it’s going to be brought back.”

Politics and advocacy were others passions. She was a three-term president and lifelong member of the League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island, founder of the Save Our Kids Crusade anti-violence coalition in the 1990s and founded a book club that has evolved into the Whidbey Reads initiative now in its 12th year. MEMORIALIZING Sundberg with a lecture series in her honor connected with a public library

system she idealized seemed fitting, Campell said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to be able to contribute something that’s going to do good long into the future and provide memories of someone very special to Oak Harbor,” Campbell said. Goldberg envisions an annual event in which an eminent speaker or speakers are invited to Whidbey Island with other island-wide library events taking place to complement the visit. The occasion would be part of an annual programming initiative for adults on Whidbey Island, promoting reading and learning and covering issues of local, national or global interest, according to Goldberg. “She was a very eclectic

person,” Goldberg said of Sundberg. “She was interested in a lot of things. I wanted to do this in a way that is fitting for her. “THIS IS one thing that’s missing from this area. We have a lot of events on Whidbey Island and North Whidbey. We don’t have anything that I could call academic events.” Goldberg said he believes that Whidbey Island, with its beauty and surrounding attractions, could entice prominent speakers and was planning to aim high. “I think we can attract some big-name people. That’s my fantasy,” he said. GOLDBERG said he currently spends his energies as a political activist. He calls himself a “progressive communitarian,” describing that role as “committed to solving problems and making one’s community a better place to

live.” He’s spoken to groups impacted by Sundberg and so far has found them eager to help raise money for the memorial fund. “Trudy has literally influenced thousands of people,” he said. The idea for the endowment is for it to ultimately grow to a point where the interest earned covers the costs for speakers and the fund continues to build through the years and decades. “It’s a way to ensure a stable funding stream into the future,” Campbell said. ONCE $50,000 is raised, draws can be made to cover a speaker. The hope is to start the series some time in 2014, Goldberg said. Whitsitt, who lives in Seattle, said she is setting aside time lately to read her mother’s many diaries.

Trudy Sundberg was known to document most everything, often making carbon copies and filing away so much of what she learned and wanted to share. Whitsitt is one of four children of John and Trudy Sundberg who all live in and around Seattle. Two of them, Kris Sundberg and Whitsitt, became lawyers, one, Lana Sundberg, is an artist and arts teacher, and the youngest, Dane Sundberg, is a contractor, carpenter and boat builder. John Sundberg preceded his wife in death in 2004. Kris Sundberg was the opening speaker before a large gathering at his mother’s memorial in late August. He immediately recognized the irony of the moment. “I sure wish mom was here to do this,” he told the gathering. “She could do this so much better.” nnn

ers grew out their mustaches to raise money for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Wounded Warrior Foundation. The foundation provides assistance and support for active-duty and veterans who are wounded, injured or ill, and for their families. It also helps maintain the EOD Memorial. Fire Chief Ray Merrill said the department raised $550 to donate to the foundation. Lt. Craig Anderson organized the event. his mustache was all for a good cause. “It’s very thin, very ugly and I only grow it in October — it’s that ugly.” Ching said. “It puts me in for a guaranteed win.” When the contest was started three years ago, Ching said the department had categories only for best and worst mustaches. The fire department expanded the contest, and mustache growers can compete under the additional categories of lifer — one is meant to have that mustache for the rest of his life — and the best 1970s mustache. Through it all, Ching has maintained his reign as the worst mustache in the department. But he doesn’t hold on to that honor once ‘Stachetober is over. “After the last night in the month, it’s gone,” he said. Though almost everyone participates, some spouses can pay an additional amount to keep their loved ones out of the contest. Ching said one firefighter has never participated because his wife won’t allow it. Key to Ching’s success, he said, is having thin facial hair, and he doesn’t think there’s much competition to dethrone him next year. “And it’s all about having a good time,” he said.

With a new executive director taking the helm of the Port of Coupeville in December comes a new employee arrangement, prompting officials to find a bit more money in the budget. Tim McDonald, the one-time Island County health director, was named executive director last month of the small port district. Since then, he worked with port staff to prepare an employment arrangement. The current executive director, Jim Patton, works for the port on a personal services contract. McDonald wants to work for the port as an “at-will” employee. Patton, whose contract with the Port of Coupeville expires at the end of the year, is a candidate for an open seat on the port commission. McDonald said he wants to be an employee because that will allow him to be covered by the port’s insurance. “I think its important for the port and important for me to be covered by insurance,” McDonald said during the Wednesday, Oct. 30 Port of Coupeville meeting. He also recommended that he be an at will”employee, meaning the commissioners could terminate his employment for any reason or no reason.

Also, as an at-will employee, if McDonald chooses to quit, he would offer the commissioners a 60-day notice. McDonald proposed a 25-month contract. Patton works on a personal services contract and earns $50 an hour up McDonald to $34,000 a year. That arrangement resulted in Patton working hours on a pro bono basis. “This has been a major concern of mine,” Port Commissioner Benye Weber said Wednesday. She was worried that the deductions required would reduce the availability of McDonald. “My main concern is where the money is coming from,” Weber said. After the meeting, Patton said there isn’t a lot of slack in the budget to find extra dollars to increase McDonald’s salary. He, along with McDonald and the port’s accountant, will meet to negotiate compensation and any implications for the port’s budget. McDonald is scheduled to start his duties Dec. 1. He will spend a month working alongside Patton so he can better familiarize himself with the port’s operations.
