MARYSVILLE — A little misting of rain wasn’t going to stop Christina Heisley’s family of superheroes from trick-or-treating on Marysville’s Third Street on this Halloween Thursday, Oct. 31. “Do you want them divided up by DC and Marvel?” Heisley asked a photographer snapping a shot of her children in costume, as 5-yearold Aurora as Supergirl, 8-year-old Jackson as Captain America, and 10-year-olds Joe and John as Iron Man and Superman, respectively, took a moment to tuck into the bags of candy they’d collected midway through their tour of the merchants of historic downtown Marysville. “This is our second year coming out here. We had a great time last year. It’s just fun to shop

and see what’s up. The kids even got some full-size candy bars.” Among the visitors to Darilee Bedmar’s elaborate Halloween display at Third Street Books were her sonin-law Jacob Nanfito, dressed as Hulk Hogan, and his small son Miles, dressed as the Incredible Hulk. “We’ve been coming here since the trick-or-treating on Third Street started,” said Jacob Nanfito, who also brought his fairy princess daughter Isabel. “Isabel likes the suckers, but I like those candy dots. Miles will eat just about anything, though,” he laughed. MARYSVILLE — Snohomish County Executive John Lovick’s message to the Rotary Club of Marysville on Wednesday, Oct. 30, was far more personal than political. While Lovick answered questions about the County Courthouse and addressed pressing area concerns such as transportation, he set the tone for his remarks by recalling how Brent Castano, a Marysville Rotarian in attendance, had sent Lovick a check in support of his re-election campaign as Snohomish County Sheriff. “People might forget what you say or do, but they will never forget how you make them feel,” Lovick said. “When I was still serving in the state Legislature,

I’d come to Cedarcrest Middle School and spoken to Brent’s class. Life is about building relationships.” While Lovick drew laughter from the crowd by noting the number of cars he’s since bought from Castano at Roy Robinson Chevrolet in Marysville, the Snohomish County Executive was serious as he reported the trend of economic growth that he’s spotted in the county, from more business and residential buildings being constructed to more money being spent at local businesses. “Snohomish County’s jobless rate is lower than both the state and national averages,” Lovick said. “The county budget that’s been submitted is the first time that we’ve been able to add to the reserve fund in many, many years. While 9-year-old Aislynn Reed, who wore a fake beard and camouflage cap as part of a “Duck Dynasty” costume, is still looking forward to future sessions of trickor-treating, her 11-yearold brother Morgan, who donned a homemade Charlie Chaplin outfit, maturely acknowledged that this year will probably mark his last as a trick-or-treater, especially since, as his mother Alicia said, “He looks older than he is anyway.”

to the cards he’d passed out to Rotarians earlier, bearing messages about the importance of honesty and selfrespect, which he dispenses to children when he visits their schools. “We all make mistakes, but I tell them to take responsibility for it,” Lovick said. “I also tell them never to give up, because I grew up in a tiny house in the middle of cotton fields in the South, where we didn’t even have running water.” In spite of a few Marysville Rotarians’ calls for the County Courthouse to be relocated to their hometown, Lovick confidently predicted that it would remain in Everett, but thanked the Marysville community for its welcoming spirit. “I’ve lived a lot of places, so believe me when I say that this is the best county in America and the world,” Lovick said. “We need to continue to market how great this county is, and all the great work that you do.”

TULALIP — The Tulalip Tribes announced a recordsetting $6.9 million in donations this year, to more than 280 Washington state nonprofits and community groups, during their 21st annual “Raising Hands” celebration, in the Orca Ballroom of the Tulalip Resort Hotel and Casino, on Saturday, Oct. 26. “We’re here to share stories of goodwill, and of how we came to journey together,” Tulalip Tribal Board Chair Mel Sheldon Jr. said. “We look back on how much progress we’ve made, thanks to the leaders of the past, who built our foundations. We’re so grateful to be able to follow their example, and to share in the goodwill and work that you do. Look around you,” he told those seated in the Orca Ballroom that evening. “We’re all doing the same work, which is bettering the community. It wasn’t that long ago that Tulalip needed help, and we appreciated the helping hands we received, so now that we’re in a position to do so, we’re proud to help

those who help others.” After a performance by Quil Ceda Elementary student singers, Tulalip Tribal Board member Glen Gobin noted that the Tribes’ financial generosity is a sign of their growing fortunes. “We’ve given more than $57 million to different charities over the years,” Gobin said. “Fifty years ago, the Tribes’ total budget was $200,000 for the whole year. We had 750 organizations request funds from us in the past year. There’s a lot of good organizations out there, but we can’t give to everybody.” Tulalip Tribal Board Vice Chair Deborah Parker told the representatives of those recipient organizations to take pride in being “hard workers who contribute to the community every day,” just as she expressed pride in being able to “stand beside you and help celebrate your successes.” Tulalip Tribal Board member Theresa Sheldon thanked a number of organizations in attendance for helping to educate the public on the larger problems facing the world, “just as we’ve had to re-

We have to do that re-education because so much of our history is not taught in books.” The Tribes support regional efforts to improve education, health and human services, cultural preservation, public safety, the environment and the economy. This year’s local recipients included the Arlington Community Food Bank — which received a donation in an amount between $7,501 to $10,000, to help with their construction of a new food bank, providing emergency food assistance to 12,000

people of all ages — and to the Marysville School District, which received a donation of more than $10,000, to support educational programs at Quil Ceda Elementary and Totem Middle School. The Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation received a donation in an amount between $2,501 to $5,000, to help fund their purchase of an advanced medical simulation manikin, with which to train hospital staff in crucial emergency responses. “And of course, our most importance resource is our youth,” Mel Sheldon said. “It’s the little ones of today who will lead us down the road to the future. We’re all in this together.”

utrition-conscious citizens have placed Initiative 522 before us. I-522 called for mandatory labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. The bill separates cooked-to-order restaurant food from mass produced off-theshelf food. In other words, food cooked for me is differentiated from food cooked for the general public. So Safeway’s Verdi pizza gets GMO labeled while Dominos escapes. They drew another line. They wanted to label straight-from-the-farm foods with GMO content but not second or third generation foods. They understood the difficulty of dealing with chili made from beef that may have eaten hay tainted with GMOs. The anti-GMO movement is driven by three main concerns. First, too many GMO plants are designed to thrive on overloads of poisonous pesticides and herbicides that end up on our plates. Second, whenever food plants are re-engineered in GMO labs, their natural nutritive value is cut. Third, when non-GMO farms become tainted by airborne GMO pollen, Big Food‘s lawyers sue them out of business for unauthorized use of patented pollen. Since genetic engineering decreases nutritive value, Big Foods’ motive for meddling with nature can’t be improving our diet. Their aim is to boost profits by reducing certain challenges native to farming. To do that, they need to convince us that eating less healthy foods tainted with poisons is a good thing. Knowing it might be a hard sell, Big Food brought a tested gun-for-hire to Washington, Winner & Mandabach, the propaganda

machine that torpedoed California’s antiGMO issue. It would have been more civilized had both sides presented their facts in an Inform-thePublic campaign. But since most of the good facts accrue to the anti-GMO side while the nasty facts burden GMO supporters, the GMO camp knew something had to be done. Winner & Mandabach’s operatives opened by telling us that Washington would be the only state to require GMO-content labeling. That lie was told often enough that voters came to believe it. In truth, Connecticut, Maine and Alaska already had GMO-labeling laws in force and dozens of states have similar laws pending. Sixty-four nations that require GMO-content labels won’t import our genetically altered foodstuffs. W&M told us that labeling GMO foods would cost taxpayers millions every year. But Trader Joe and PCC Natural Markets already do it at no cost to consumers. Nor was there a measurable up-tick in prices back when labels were first required to list ingredients. Another lie. Then they said that GM foods pose no safety risks. If Big Food’s scientists tweaked genetics to make apples more red or sweet corn sweeter, that might be true. But when the GM foods we eat contain poisons so toxic that field workers wear haz-mat suits when apply-

ing them, the risk is obvious. They told us that all the world’s healthstudy organizations concluded that GM foods are safe. In truth, the World Health Organization, United Nations, and American Medical Association have called for premarketing safety testing, a standard Big Food has not yet responded to. The National Academy of Science, American Public Health Association, Washington State Nurses, Breast Cancer Action and many others unite in opposing untested GM foods. Winner & Mandabach announced that GM crops reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides when the record shows that overusing these chemicals produces survivor superbugs and superweeds that take even heavier applications to control. The campaign against I-522 is based on 13 lies or gross distortions of truth. Because Big Food knows about the toxicity and nutritive loss of GM foods and continues to promote them in the name of enhanced profit, one has to wonder if questionable sharp business practice might have crossed the line into the realm of evil. The I-522 issue is symbolic of more than a battle between consumers and producers. It addresses a moral disease that has produced warped corporate ethics that infect government at all levels. If voters react against lies, as they should, the I-522 ballot issue shouldn’t even be close. The anti-522 campaign is so blatantly loaded with falsehood, speculative scare scenarios and warped truth that every thinking person should be outraged at how they’re being hustled by profitdriven liars.

ornelius “Bud” Solvberg took the Lord’s hand on Saturday, October 26, 2013 after complications from pneumonia, with his family at his side. He was born September 8, 1929 in Minot, North Dakota. The youngest of six children to Cornelius Sr. and Ida Solvberg. At the age of 8, he moved with his family to Marysville, WA. He graduated from Marysville High School with the class of 1949. He met Barbara Holyoke and they were married on May 16, 1959. They lived in Marysville where they raised their five children. Bud took over his father’s furniture store, the Furniture Exchange on 3rd Street in Marysville. In 1988, he

retired his business after a long successful career. Bud was a life long member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in his younger years he was a volunteer fire fighter for the city of Marysville, and was an active member of the Downtown Merchants Association. He enjoyed spending time doing yard work, golfing with his buddies and spending quality time with his family and friends at his beach house that he built on Camano Island when he was in his 20’s. The beach house is a family treasure still to this day. Bud was preceded in death by his wife Barbara in 1988, Mother-in-Law Beatrice Holyoke (Robert) and four sisters, Marian Solvberg, Olga Kerr (Cecil), Edythe Beaman (Don) and Irene Holte (Al). He is survived by his sister, Shirley Roth (late husband Roy). His children, Diane Schuh (John), Kevin Solvberg (Shannon), Connie Rossnagle (Bryan), Susan Webster (Chris) and David Solvberg. Grandchildren, J.R., Jordon, Conner,

Allison, Kyle, McKenzie, Andy, Spencer, Nikole and great granddaughter Cheyanne. Sister in law Patricia Raymond (late husband Bill), and numerous nieces and nephews. Bud was the kindest, most generous, humble man to all who were lucky enough to know him. He will be missed dearly by his family and many friends. The family sends a very special thank you to his longtime primary care physician Dr. Richard Terry, the staff at Merrill-Gardens in Stanwood, WA where he resided this last year and for the wonderful care he received at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Marysville on Saturday November 2nd at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow.

ichael R Eva nger was born in Port Angeles, WA, and passed away September 27, 2013 at the Franciscan Ho sp ic e, University Place, WA. Michael was a friend to many, always ready to reach out to help those in need, and freely shared his skills and knowledge. He will be greatly missed by those he touched and loved. Michael is survived by his wife of 34 years, Caroline of Suquamish WA. His parents Robert and Virginia Evanger of Bothell WA, daughter Christina Duquette of Sterling VA; son and daughter-inlaw David and Nicole Evanger, with grandchildren Ethan and Kaylee of Hayes VA. Michael is also survived by three brothers; Bert, Eric and Mark; one sister, Anna, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews throughout Washington, Oregon, California, Utah and Colorado. Michael began his schooling in Port Angeles, moving with his family to Bothell where he graduated Bothell High School in 1970. Returning to Port Angeles, Michael studied Architectural

Drafting at Peninsula College. His lifelong love of the outdoors blossomed during this time as Michael spent his free time hiking and climbing in the Olympic National Park or dirt biking in the forests above his home in Port Angeles. Michael worked as a master finish carpenter from Everett to Tacoma, Gig Harbor to Port Angeles leaving a legacy of beautiful homes, houseboats, condominiums, and many commercial projects in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bremerton. A veteran of the US Marine Corps, Michael was Honorably Discharged in 1975 with the rank of Corporal. Michael enjoyed wood carving, fly fishing, photography, kayaking, sailing, and hiking/snow shoeing throughout Washington. He was a member of the Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse, and Kitsap Audubon Society. He was awarded for his wood carvings in the Kitsap County Woodcarvers annual shows. Burial is scheduled for December 6th at 1 pm, with honors, at the Mt Tahoma National Cemetery. Big Lots comes to Marysville Mall Nov. 8

MARYSVILLE — Its official grand opening isn’t until 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, but the employees of the new Big Lots store at the corner of the Marysville Town Center Mall have already gotten used to passersby taping on the glass to try and get a sneak peak. Marysville Big Lots Store Manager Dan Hanlon explained that his roughly 60 employees have had 25 days to prepare for the ribbon-cutting, during which Big Lots District Manager Sheila Marquis will present a check for $1,500 to Totem Middle School. “When I was working for Restoration Hardware and we opened an outlet in this area, I noticed that the folks from Marysville would buy more small shelf stock,” said Hanlon, who’s

worked in retail “all my life” and lived in Snohomish County for the better part of a decade. “That’s when I knew that Marysville was looking for a good discount store. When I started working for Big Lots three years ago, they hired me to work here, but because of the construction on this facility, I worked at the Bellingham store instead for two years.” Hanlon believes that Big Lots’ ever-changing selection of affordably priced goods is tailor-made for the shoppers of Marysville. “We have a lot of people in Marysville who are blue-collar, hard-working and looking for great bargains,” Hanlon said. “We’re here for the community, and not just to offer them great deals. All of our workers are from the community. When we sent out the call for employees, we got 300

applications in three days.” While Hanlon was promising first-day, first-through-thedoor customers an assortment of giveaways, gift cards and other prizes, Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Caldie Rogers was singing the praises of the new store. “Big Lots is a big win for our downtown core and community,” Rogers said. “How big a win? Studies prove that shoppers favor a shoppers’ destination, offering multiple shopping venues, rather than traveling to a single store.” Rogers has no doubts that the shoppers who are drawn to Big Lots will explore the rest of Marysville’s surrounding downtown core of merchants. “Add to that the win of new jobs that they have brought with them, and then double that win recog-

that took first place in the 6-8 age category of the costume contest. “He has just been on this Titanic kick lately,” Wiederspoon said of his stepson, whose Titanic costume was not only authentic to many of the minor details of the ship’s design that others might have overlooked, but also boasted a tray in front, at the bow of the ship, for Tunstall to store his Halloween candy. “He’s watched every documentary and read everything he could find at the library about the Titanic.” “It’s the most famous shipwreck on Earth,” Tunstall said, to explain his fascination with the Titanic, whose costume took “four long nights” to construct, according to his stepdad.

Tanner Siemer, 12, nabbed first place in his own age category of the contest through a simple Google search and a few hours of work with his dad Ryan. “I just looked up ‘awardwinning Halloween costumes,’” said Tanner Siemer, who used a tall trench coat and a creatively positioned tray to make himself look like a headless adult holding a child’s head in a glass jar. “After we bought the trench coat, it took about two to three hours to put together. I was in it to win it.” “I built the frame in about an hour,” Ryan Siemer said of the apparatus that made the trench coat stand up straight on its own. “It’s like a backpack sling that fits over his shoulders.” Kylene Mildon slung

Grace soccer succeeds on, off the field BY SCOTT FRANK

MARYSVILLE — The Grace Academy boys soccer team is already a state champion off the field, and is looking to accomplish a similar feat on the field. Off the field, the boys soccer team was recently named the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s 2013 Fall Team Academic State Champions for 1B Boys Soccer, and on the field, the team finished in second place in their league, ending the regular season with a 12-2 league record and a 14-2 overall record. They now move on to the Bi-District Boys Soccer Tournament, which begins Nov. 2. “I think one of the biggest reasons for our success this year is our teamwork,” said Grace Academy Boys Soccer Head Coach Mark Ruhlman. “From our keepers to our defense, to our midfielders and forwards, we’ve got one of the best teams we’ve had in school history. We’ve had the most shutouts, and we’ve scored the most goals.” Ruhlman added that goalkeeper Isaiah VanDam had

eight shutouts this season, and Jeremiah Lee had 17 assists and scored 31 of the team’s 90 goals. “We have a lot of guys who have played soccer for a long time, and they play on a lot of select clubs,” said Ruhlman. “They developed well themselves, and when you put them on the same team, they’re going to interact a lot better with each other.” While members of the team have seen a lot of success this year, that has not always been the case. “Three years ago, when our seniors were freshmen, we didn’t win a single game all year. We were 0-14,” said Ruhlman. “The next year we finished better at 10-8, and made it to the state quarterfinals. Last year we also made it to the quarterfinals. And this year our goal, obviously, is to make it back to the state tournament.” Grace Academy kicks off the Bi-District Tournament on Nov. 2, beginning at noon, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, against Crosspoint Academy. “We played them last year in this same game, the first

game of the tournament, and we beat them 3-0,” said Ruhlman. “But they are a different team, and we are a different team. They do have two of the top scorers in the state at our level. They are the No. 3 seed in their district, so we know they are going to be tough.” The top five teams in the Bi-District Tournament will move on to the Sate Tournament, with the quarterfinals beginning Nov. 16. “Our season pretty much starts this weekend,” said Ruhlman. “This is what we’ve been working for. We have some must-win games coming up.” And while the team looks to capture the state title on the field, it already has garnered the 2013 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/ Les Schwab Tires Scholastic Awards Program Fall Team Academic State Champions title for 1B Boys Soccer. “The WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/ Les Schwab Tires Scholastic Awards Program honors the top academic teams in each sport and classification. “In the last four years, this is the third time we’ve received this award,” said Ruhlman. “When you look at when our current seniors were freshmen, they didn’t win a single game, but they won the State Championship for academics,” said Ruhlman. “The next year we won it, but didn’t win it last year. It is definitely good to win it again this year. It’s a great accomplishment. It would be even greater if we

can do it on the field as well.” Ruhlman said that academics are very important at Grace Academy. “Obviously, academics have to come first. If that means they’re missing a practice to get their grades up, that’s what needs to be done,” said Ruhlman. “This is a great group of kids and we’re really proud of what they have accomplished, on and off the field.”

MARYSVILLE — The Lakewood girls soccer team is headed to the 2013 2A District 1/2 Girls Soccer Tournament on Nov. 2, at Bellingham’s Civic Stadium. They will face Squalicum at 1 p.m. The Cougars finished the regular season with a league record of 7-6-1 and an overall record of

7-8-1. “The regular season went pretty well,” said Head Coach Steve Brown. “Our girls made a lot of progress this year, and we’re happy to be playing in the District Tournament.” Brown said the beginning of the season was very challenging for his team. “We started the season with a very competitive schedule. Our

two preseason games were nonleague games, and they were against 3A schools,” said Brown. “And we had a jamboree, that’s not reflected on the record, against a 3A and a 4A school, and I believe all of those teams are actually in the District tournaments within their respective divisions as well.” If that wasn’t challenging enough, Brown said his team started the regular season with a match against Archbishop Murphy, which went undefeated and finished the season with a 14-0 league record. “Those first games were very challenging,” said Brown. “We did a lot of learning during that period, and the girls progressed and they matured their game a lot.” Brown said his team has benefitted from having a number of returning players who saw playing time last year. “We improved placement-wise within the league this year,” said Brown. “I think a lot of it is due to that extra year of experience, and the maturity of the players.”

Brown said that after the challenging start to the season, his team was able to get some wins. “As the season went on we were able to find success, and were able to string together three wins in a row, which helped quite a bit as well,” said Brown. The coach said his team has improved on both offense and defense. “Lakewood in the past has had a very strong defense. I think we have a better balance of offense and defense,” said Brown. “What has helped is a lot of our players are not necessarily position-specific players. For instance, I don’t have players who can only play defense, or only play offense. They can play almost anywhere on the field that I ask them to play, and do it successfully. With the regular season behind them, the Cougars move on to the District Tournament where they’ll face a very strong Squalicum team in the first round. “It’s going to be a huge challenge, there’s no doubt about that,”

said Brown about the Squalicum game. “Anybody who wants to advance in the tournament is going to have to play them at some point or another because of the way the brackets are set up. They are obviously a very good team. I believe they placed in the top four at State last year, and they beat Sehome in their league this year, which is the first time Sehome has not won their division in quite a few years.” The top four teams in the District Tournament will move on to the State Tournament, and Brown believes the Cougars can be one of those teams that move on. “I think it is something that realistically they can strive for and achieve,” said Brown. “The way the matches are at this level, the difference is usually predicated on one or two things that happen in the game, and it depends on if you’re on the good side or bad side of that. They are fully capable of being on the good side and, if they are, they will be able to advance.”

MARYSVILLE — The spectacle at the MarysvillePilchuck High School pool on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 28, pitted male and female athletes from M-PHS and Marysville Getchell High School against each other in a friendly, light-hearted competition that helped support the Marysville Community Food Bank. The girls swimming and diving teams from M-P and MG faced off against boys from the two schools’ football teams in a series of four swimming and diving contests, from the 200 medley and free relays, to diving and an inner-tube relay. “We raised about 75 cans of food and a few dollars,” said Jaci LeGore Hodgins, head coach of the M-P and MG girls swimming and diving teams. “Of course, we’d always like to raise more, but every little bit helps.” While the girls turned out 21 from M-P and 12 from MG, the boys were only able to recruit 12 from M-P and four from MG, but what the boys might have lacked in relative numbers, they made up for in literally making a splash, with M-P’s Ricky Jacobsen in particular inspiring the event’s student judges to pick up their chairs and move back in anticipation of his cannonball dives. “The football guys always put in a great showing,” LeGore Hodgins said. “M-P’s Drew Hatch threw one heck of a reverse, which everybody held their breath as they watched. It’s really fun to see who steps up and is willing to go for it, whether they’re swimming or diving.” “The boys did a lot better than I expected,” said Serena Corbett, a junior and a team captain from M-P. “I think the entire event was super fun, and anyone that didn’t come to watch definitely missed out. It’s always cool to show the other sports teams what swim and dive is all about.” “MG’s Brooke Wherley ripped some of her dives and was a show-stealer,” LeGore Hodgins said. “We want her to throw dives like that at Districts and State.” Although students on the sidelines held up numbers to score the boys’ and girls’ dives, no official score was kept for the competition. “This is a very casual event,” LeGore Hodgins said. “Its mission is to bring our two schools together to do something fun that helps people.”

What LeGore Hodgins most hopes that the community takes away from this event is the number of young people in Marysville who have big hearts for their hometown. “I’m impressed every year with how the football players handle themselves at this event,” LeGore Hodgins said. “It’s a wonderful Marysville goodwill games,

and I’m honored to work in a community where we have such support from our pool staff, football coaches, students and parents, that we can all come together and do this every year. The M-P and MG swim and dive girls deserve major kudos for their organization and participation as well. It’s a real gift to work with these ladies.”

Soroptimist fall fundraiser sets new record

SMOKEY POINT — Pirate-wear was the order of the evening at the Medallion Hotel in Smokey Point, during Soroptimist International of Marysville’s annual fundraising auction on Saturday, Oct. 26, which lived up to its billing of “Bounty of Treasures” by yielding sig-

nificant funds for the community service organization’s programs. Not only did this year’s auction draw 175 attendees, as opposed to the 153 who attended last year’s event, but it also generated $34,000 in profit, which Marysville Soroptimist Board member Elaine Hanson reported not only topped last year’s

number of $31,000, but also exceeded each of the previous years that this fundraiser has run. Hanson cited the extra space afforded by the Baker Room, one floor up from the event’s ground-level dining room, as providing far more flexibility for the silent auction to grow this year, and joined event chair Nancy
