Work on track for Fire/EMS boat

By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Standing in front of the 32-foot long, shiny aluminum catamaran at Tim Leonard’s Freeland shop, it’s easy to envision the marine response vessel cruising through choppy Puget Sound waters. Work was coming along well during a recent visit to the first-time boat building company, North Cross Aluminum, at Leonard’s home and shop. Leonard, half his body in one of the two 430 horsepower engine compartments, reflected on the work that went into the future South Whidbey Fire/ EMS boat. “It’s a serious boat, it’s a serious project,” Leonard said. “It’s crazy to be on an island and not have a highspeed boat.” South Whidbey Fire/ EMS received $350,000 from a Federal Emergency Management Association grant and will pay the remainder of the $483,000 tab from district coffers. Leonard and his crew of metal workers have worked on the boat since July, though they were awarded the contract in April. Engineering specifications were hashed out for a couple of months before any fabrication began at the shop. He estimated about 20 people have worked on the new fire boat. That includes one recent addition to replace the project’s lead, Robert Roane, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in August. Brett Harvey, a longtime metal worker, was brought in to aid the boat’s progress. Now, Leonard and Co. are waiting on the electrical system to be installed and for the SEE FIREBOAT, A28
Clinton movie maker puts Coupeville film on hold By RON NEWBERRY South Whidbey Record
opportunity to purchase the restaurant from the previous owners who wanted out of the business. Colburn had been working at the restaurant for about a year prior and had worked as a head chef at two other restaurants prior when he decided to take on the business.
An independent feature film planned to be shot on Whidbey Island this fall is on hold after the movie was unable to secure a marquee Hollywood actor. Joseph Itaya, the movie’s producer and director, had hoped to begin production of a children’s adventure film called “Lost & Found” in Coupeville in October, however the project hinged on landing notable big-screen acting talent that didn’t materialize. Itaya, a graduate of South Whidbey High School who now lives in Los Angeles, is still pressing forward to keep alive his dream of turning a screenplay he wrote in college into a motion picture. Itaya restructured the movie’s script and changed the role of a main character to make the film more alluring to established actors. He said he revised the story by making two scripts, one set in the summer and the other during the holiday season, extending the possibilities of when shooting could occur. The movie originally was to be set in the summer. “There are so many things out of my control,” Itaya said. “I can only do the things in my control. One of those things in my control is the story, the characters, the script and planning, things of that nature.” “Basically, there are two different sets of blueprints at this point. One is a summer blueprint, one is a Christmas blueprint. There are so many different elements. It really just depends on which one comes together first.”

30 years and still going strong By CELESTE ERICKSON South Whidbey Record It is a day of celebration for the owners of Neil’s Clover Patch Cafe. Today, Neil Colburn and Candy Culver have owned the restaurant for 30 years. That’s three decades of serving food to hungry customers. The restaurant has grown to become a prominent fixture on the
island in Bayview with many patrons returning as regulars. Colburn, a former Langley mayor, tackles the kitchen while his wife, Culver, manages the front. The cafe is the type of place when the owners often know every person in the restaurant by name. “We’ve had wonderful loyal customers since we’ve opened,” Culver said. Back in 1983, Colburn seized the

Find a little Norwegian comfort at Trinity bazaar By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record
the bazaar, there are lots of Norwegians on Whidbey Island devouring the flatbread. Carter estimated bringing in about $600 from lefse, which goes toward the church’s giving fund for Helping Hand, Good Cheer Food Bank, Ryan’s House for Youth, the discretionary fund for the church’s pastors and its preschool. “Every piece will be sold and people will be begging for more,” said Sandra Iversen. Making lefse is an annual tradition for the Freeland church, and one of the top grossers at the bazaar. For $5, someone can leave with a packet of four lefse. Carter estimated they made more than 500 pieces of lefse over four cooking days in October. Any scraps or overcooked pieces were thrown into a pile with some melted butter and brown sugar for the volunteers to dispose of. “All lefse is good, burned lefse just isn’t as good,” Iversen said.
A streamlined operation unfolded in the Trinity Lutheran Church kitchen earlier this month. A dozen hands rolled, fried and packaged a fluffy, soft, sweet flatbread from Norway called lefse. It’s a remnant of the old world in Scandinavia and a favorite of Whidbey Islanders at the Trinity Lutheran Church annual holiday bazaar Saturday, Nov. 2 in Freeland. Ten volunteers were busy toiling away for a couple of hours preparing lefse. As the workers flattened and fried, they discussed the important differences in the spelling of last names like Anderson vs. Andersen and Scandinavian ancestry. Lefse for many of the church’s volunteer cooks is as filled with nostalgia as it is with butter and brown sugar. “People just seem to like it,” said Lorean Carter. Doris Day will come to life in Langley during a performance of “Que Sera! Celebrating Doris Day.” The musical will show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. The singing star is portrayed by Portland resident Kristi King. The performance will include a retelling of her life stories and feature her hit songs such as “Que Sera, Sera,” “It’s Magic,” “Everybody Loves a Lover,” “Perhaps,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Love Me or Leave Me,” “Making
Whoopee” and more. King is accompanied by the Hans Brehmer Quartet. This is the second time the musical has performed in Langley. “It’s such a thrill to honor her and the music,” King said. “I love the music and love the songs.” King said she enjoys playing the famed singer. She especially enjoys watching the audience react to her performance. “It takes them back,” she said. “The biggest thrill is seeing people sing along and remember.” Joan Merrill, a producer for the musical and Bellevue resident, said it’s gratifying to see the audience enjoy the show.
“Audiences just love it because they love Doris Day,” she said. “They love those songs; it takes them back to another day.” King will also be roaming the streets of Langley in full costume as Doris Day the day of the performance. A portion of ticket sales and CD proceeds will be donated to the Doris Day Animal Foundation, an organization which Day founded. Victim’s family files civil suit against convicted murderer Baker By JESSIE STENSLAND South Whidbey Record Robert “Al” Baker is in prison for brutally murdering his wife last year. Now he’s facing a wrongful death lawsuit from his late wife’s niece, who is acting as personal representative for the estate of Kathie Baker. This is the second civil action filed against Baker in Island County Superior Court since the murder. Jami Hill, Kathie Baker’s niece, filed “a petition for a slayer finding” early this year to prevent Baker from inheriting his wife’s property, including her portion of their marital property, or receiving any life insurance from her death. The family’s attorney, Charles Arndt of Coupeville, said a judge entered an order this week, finding that Baker is a “slayer” under the statute. The wrongful death lawsuit is aimed at the rest of the marital property. “We are asking for what she would have earned had she continued her working life,” he said. Arndt said assets appear to be small, especially when the couple’s debt is factored in. Judge Alan Hancock sentenced 63-year-old Baker to 52 years in prison, so he won’t be earning in the future. The Bakers owned a pizzeria in Freeland at the time of the murder. They both had worked for Raytheon

Many members of Kathie Baker’s family and her friends attended the trial early this month as the prosecution laid out evidence that Baker hit his wife in the head with a hammer and strangled her as she slept in their bed. He wrapped her body in a tarp and hid it in their backyard while his love interest visited from Alaska.
Hill and the rest of the family wept and embraced each other after he was sentenced. Baker originally tried to hire attorney Craig Platt to represent him in the criminal trial. But his assets were frozen by the court after Hill filed the petition, so he ended up being represented by a county public defender. Arndt said the civil cases have been unusual. According to court documents, Baker had a $10,000

cashier’s check on him when he was arrested for the murder. Arndt said an agreement was reached to split the
money between the estate and Baker’s attorney. But when his attorney presented the check for
Baker to sign when he was in jail, he refused to sign and wouldn’t give it back. He later mailed it to his former girlfriend in Alaska, even though she had a protection order against him; she immediately handed it over to a detective, Arndt said. “That was a pretty big misbehavior,” he said. After Baker was arrested, the prosecution discovered that Baker was a sex offender who spent five years in prison in California. Baker claimed he was a physicist, but investigators couldn’t find any evidence that he ever earned a degree. Arndt said Kathie Baker’s family members are convinced that she knew nothing about this other side of her husband. They are upset that Raytheon Corporation allowed Baker to work at an isolated station in Antarctica with a small group of people. Arndt said Kathie Baker went through extensive background checks to gain security clearance and she no doubt thought Baker went through the same process.

FREELAND Rowboat towed to safety A man in a rowboat got blown a bit off course in Holmes Harbor on Monday. As winds picked up, the man was seen waving his arms, apparently signaling for help to people in the area. Emergency aid was called out, but responders from South Whidbey Fire/EMS and Whidbey General EMS were not needed as the man was eventually towed to a private dock on the west side of the harbor.
Assistant Chief Paul Busch said no one was injured, and gave an allclear call by 4:30 p.m.

Twenty five years of rewards This year for Jeff Parker 25 is a very important number. It’s how many years he’s been a volunteer firefighter and EMT with South Whidbey Fire/EMS. It’s the number of years he’s worked at Boeing. It also happens to be his 25th wedding anniversary. Those are some solid silver celebrations. As a Lieutenant, he’s been on both sides of training—taking and teaching. It’s intense and ongoing, because volunteers have to keep up their skills. “Volunteering requires an ability to balance family, work and community service, but it’s worth it.” In a few years, the Parkers will be facing an empty nest as well as retirement from Boeing. But South Whidbey will not be without its Lieutenant. “This life would not be possible without the support of my family. Itaya had laid the groundwork for the movie to begin production in October, gaining approval to shoot at the Coupeville Wharf and at Fort Casey. He also held an audition in Coupeville that drew roughly 100 local actors looking to get a small part in the movie. “I saw some wonderful talent,” Itaya said. “Everybody was so positive. It was really a magical day. We’re like a cruise ship. We’re just in neutral.” Itaya calls “Lost & Found” his lifetime dream project. He wrote the screenplay as his senior thesis at the University of Southern California. “No one wants it (to happen) more than me,” he said. The movie is based on two brothers visiting their uncle on a remote island. While on the island, they uncover secrets about their grandfather and hidden wealth, and come across clues to go find it. But they’re not alone in their pursuit as they deal with sinister forces in their way. Although Itaya revised the setting and changed the uncle’s character some to be more appealing to actors, the main themes of the story didn’t change. “We tell a story about a family that was broken and needs to heal,” Itaya aid. “There are an infinite number of ways to tell that story.” Itaya is one of four Los Angeles-based producers working to make the movie happen. He has returned to Los Angeles, where he produces commercials, music videos, records and corporate industrial videos, and also runs his own music academy. He’ll continue to try to land the sort of Hollywood

The entire film revolves around securing a known actor and having everything fall into place around that actor’s availability. “It is actually not the exception, it’s the rule that a movie schedule gets pushed and adjusted because you have to have all your ducks totally in a row. “When you’re using movie star talent, when you book their talent, it’s booked. It has to get done.” Itaya said that being a producer is much more “blue collar” than one might think. “The film just has so many elements: weather, the cast and financing,” he said. “The list just goes on and on. “While it’s painful and really hard for me personally, at the same time, that’s the nature of life and the nature of dreams. You just keep pressing on. “As long as you keep pressing on, and keep rowing due west, then eventually you will make it to the promised land.” And he plans to get there. Hordes run zombie course By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Out in Clinton, it gets dark, really dark at night. Through a misty fog at Island Greens last Friday, waves of people wove their way through the golf course. They tried to survive the “zombie apocalypse” there, a Halloweentime attraction that springboarded off the popularity of haunted houses and “The Walking Dead.” In its second year, the zombie course still had some flubs on opening night last week. When the course requires more than a dozen zombie volunteers and a handful of militarygarbed escorts, it’s easy for a few not to show and cause a bit of a script rewrite. That wasn’t much of an issue for the first group of guests to walk the course, avoiding “infection” from zombies popping out from trees, bushes and even the greens. “We haven’t done this so we decided to check it out,” said Oliver Passemard of Freeland, there with his son, Tristan, and friends Constance Wiseman and Antoine LaLonde. “We really like zombie movies,” Wiseman said. Anyone who dares brave the near pitch-black course is guided by a few fatiguewearing escorts. They have flashlights, which they periodically turn on to
check areas for any humandevouring wannabes, so stumbling around in the dark is made a bit safer. Here’s a tip for any would-be survivors: wear boots. The course gets wet with dew as the evening wears on, and dry feet are a must in zombie survival. A couple of teenagers waited eagerly for the first trip. Nick Weatherford of Coupeville and James Ogden of Clinton both toured the course last year. They could hardly wait to tackle it again, though one was a little more frightened by it than the other. “This kid wasn’t used to zombies,” Weatherford, 17, said of his cousin, James. “I don’t think he slept the rest of the night.” As guests wander from the staging area — a tent where the zombie outbreak is briefly explained — they wind through a few holes along the course. Even in the open areas like the fairway, don’t let your guard down. These zombies are of the “28 Days Later” and “World War Z” film variety in that they sprint and are not relegated to slow-asmolasses meandering. Toward the end of the experience, plenty of scares lurk. Perhaps none were more terrifying than a psychotic-zombie-clown that, even after it was “put down” by the military guides, kept dragging itself toward a screaming crowd.

Charles Edward Chase Charles Edward Chase passed away at the age of 92 on Oct. 22, 2013 after a brief illness in Coupeville, Wash. He was born Jan. 22, 1921 in Portland, Ore. to Charles Edward and Cecil Mae Chase. He married Lois Josephine Gass of Meridian, Idaho in 1947 and recently they celebrated 66 years of marriage this past September. “Charlie” spent his early years of living in Bellingham and various other towns in Washington State. After marrying Lois, he built the family home they lived in on Lake Washington in Seattle. They lived there for 45 years and then moved to Whidbey Island. To augment his early work as an auto/boat mechanic, he attended Edison Vocational Technical Institute. He then worked for the Boeing Company for 43 years in flight test. This occupation took him to many fascinating locations throughout the world. It is worth noting that Charlie played a part in the launching of the first com-
mercial airplane at Boeing Field. Charlie enjoyed cruising on his boat, the Sea Chase, with family and friends; especially around the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands. In earlier years, he and Lois belonged to the Boeing Boat Club and enjoyed many cruises around Puget Sound. He also enjoyed fishing, photography, and visiting with family. Charlie made friends easily and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed spirited discussions with anyone and everyone and frequently sang songs and told many stories. Survivors include wife Lois Chase of Freeland, Wash.; son Greg Chase of Freeland, Wash.; daughter Stacye Williams (Charles) of Baker City, Ore.; grandchildren Ben Chase (Amber) of Old Town, Idaho, Scott Chase (Lindsey) of Seattle, Wash., Allison Williams of Portland, Ore., Jenna Williams of Seoul, Republic of Korea, and Erin Williams of Boise, Idaho. Greatgrandchildren include Joshua Chase and Talia Chase of Old Town, Idaho. Also surviving is brother Marvin Chase (Helen) of Lake Stevens, Wash. Preceded in death were parents Charles E. and Cecil M. Chase and sister Dorothy Bodine. At Charlie’s request, there will be no funeral but instead a summertime barbecue/picnic will be planned for family and friends. Donald E. Dillon Donald Eugene Dillon passed away peacefully after a long illness on Oct. 23, 2013. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Dillon, his brothers, Lawrence Dillon and Charles Dillon, Jr. and his brotherin-law, Edward Heiberger. Donald was born to Lawrence Delfel and Irene Hull in Santa Rosa, Calif. on Dec. 14, 1940. His father passed away when he was an infant. He was adopted several years later by the only father he ever knew, Charles Lester Dillon Sr. when he married Donald’s
mother Irene. Donald spent most of his life in the central valley of California where he worked as a machine operator, turkey rancher, pig rancher and cab driver. He moved to Washington in 2001 to be near his brother-in-law and his nieces. While on Whidbey Island he worked for several years for Good Cheer as a volunteer and an employee and was a cab driver until his illness. Donald always had a smile and was willing to help when needed. He will be missed by his nieces Deborah (Douglas) Holbert, of Greenbank, Sandra Davis of Sedro-Woolley and his nephews, Edward and Ronald Dillon of Lodi, Calif. He will also be missed by his dear friend, Shirley Lovern and his dog, Ester. At Donald’s request there will be no service but for those wishing to remember Donald in a special way, the family suggests donations in his memory to Good Cheer.

Making healthy choices a part of life If there is anyone on Whidbey Island who symbolizes a life in balance it is this volunteer firefighter. That’s because health and wellness, and giving and receiving, is dear to his heart. His colleagues might describe him as a person who “walks the talk,” and Oyola might agree - especially about the walking part. Have a fun and safe Halloween EDITOR’s cOlumn

Is it really Halloween again already? A full year has passed? It seems impossible, that it was just yesterday that I was tramping down chilly October streets with my then-11-year-old and his pals. Yet tomorrow, waves of little ghosts and goblins will once again descend on neighborhoods across Whidbey Island with the same mission — to trick or treat. They’ll rap on doors in costumes that span the rainbow. Some will be disguised as evil monsters who live in the shadows, others will be rays of pink light wrapped in a princess dress. Many more will be dressed as superheroes, darting about in brightly colored outfits and waving capes. Such costumes tend to be my personal favorite, though they always evoke a mix of emotions. I’ll never forget my first Halloween because the year’s trick-ortreating was done in my underpants. They happened to be Superman underwear, bright red with a yellow band and were worn over blue tights to complete my mother’s homemade costume, but it didn’t dull my shame. But in retrospect, 30 years later, I can’t help but think now how cool it was of my mom to go through all the trouble to make me a costume. Back then you couldn’t just go to Walmart and pick up a ready-made outfit complete with a plastic mask, or at least we never did. No, she took the time to tailor one just for me, and as I recollect it did look pretty awesome and I got quite a few compliments. Of course many more Halloweens followed and some are more memorable than others, such as my last as a trick or treater, where I roved about with a pack of friends on a mission to fill a pillowcase with sweets. We knew we were probably too old, but it was fun anyway, and the next year we hung up our capes for good. Though that part of childhood must end for us all, parents have a small cheat in that they can relive the fun and adventure of Halloween through their children. In watching their joy and excitement we get something no pillowcase can hold. It makes one wonder who Halloween is really for — us or the kids. Either way, have fun tomorrow and be safe.

Betty Bond is the right candidate for Position 5 Editor, I met Betty Bond at a School District community forum a couple of years ago when Dr. Jo Moccia began her tenure as our district superintendent. I was immediately impressed with her intelligence, knowledge of quality instructional practices, vast experience with the educational system, high expectations for student growth, dedication to her new community, and ability to articulate her ideas in a professional manner. When she told me it was a lifelong passion to be a member of a school board, I encouraged her to file when a position became available. Two terms were expiring for the upcoming election. Unfortunately, she didn’t reside in the defined area where a term was expiring so my term, the “at large” position — the candidate can live anywhere within the school district boundary — was her only option. After much
thought and consideration, I decided to step aside and encouraged Betty Bond to run for Position 5. Betty Bond is extremely dedicated to this, her new community, and we are fortunate she chose to live here. She shouldn’t be penalized for her lack of longevity here, but embraced and commended for what she contributes to this community moving forward. In the short time she’s lived here, Betty has volunteered and participated in a variety of organizations such as Readiness to Learn, American Association of University Women, M Bar C Ranch, Whidbey Camano Land Trust and in the South Whidbey School District. Betty Bond is an asset to our community and will be an excellent school board director for the South Whidbey School District. While Betty Bond has decorum and professional insight, Rocco Gianni would approach the board with passion. After 30 years of professional life in the district, Rocco would bring his accumulated sense of education here to the board. And this is seen by some as a threat. I am unaware of professional complaints over 30 years where Mr. Gianni was seen as a threat to individuals he worked with. To the contrary, he is held in awe as a motivational model of a teacher. Mallorie Mitchem, a Falcon sophomore, finished in 14th place, nearly 23 seconds slower than her fastest course time at South Whidbey High School. South Whidbey’s other three
senior quarterback Nick French threw a 58-yard touchdown to senior Kale Reichersamer and a 48-yard touchdown pass to senior Nick Bennett in the first quarter. French followed up with a 47-yard touchdown strike to senior running back Cooper Nichols in the second quarter. Nichols connected on all four of the Falcons’ extra-point kicks. Sultan’s defense stiffened out of the halftime break and kept South Whidbey scoreless in the third quarter. An ankle injury bumped French out of the game, bringing in backup junior Parker Collins. In the waning minutes of the game, Collins threw a 10-yard touchdown to Bennett.
Volleyball readies for 1A playoffs With only one match remaining in the regular season, the South Whidbey volleyball team already knows it will move on to the 1A District 1 volleyball tournament this week. The Falcons host the Granite Falls Tigers, a 2A school, for the Cascade Conference regular season finale and South Whidbey’s senior night. Beyond the nondivision match, South

Sultan scored four plays of 20 yards or longer, and ran in a total of five touchdowns and another receiving touchdown to beat South Whidbey 48-28. Normally, running on their home course helps South Whidbey’s cross country teams reach their fastest times. For many of the Falcon boys at the Cascade Conference Championship on Saturday, that proved true. “We work on running as a group and helping each other push forward,” said Falcon boys senior Gavin Imes. “We saw some amazing PRs today.” It was more of a struggle for the South Whidbey girls, who started out a little fast on the first mile and found themselves gassed before they were done. South Whidbey’s top female runner, freshman Anna Leski, set a personal-best time for the 5,000-meter race at 20:26.9. Leski placed sixth, narrowly edged by Archbishop Murphy’s Lindsey Dorney at the finish line for fifth place. She passed her previous fastest time by five seconds and has finished under the 21-minute mark in her previous three races. The Falcon girls raced without their usual third runner, senior Jaime Rodden, who was nursing

“Iron Firefighter” Michael Oyola Making healthy choices a part of life By SHERRYE WYATT For the South Whidbey Record If there is anyone on Whidbey Island who symbolizes a life in balance, it is volunteer firefighter Michael Oyola. That’s because health and wellness, and giving and receiving, are dear to his heart. His colleagues might describe him as a person who “walks the talk,” and Oyola might agree — especially about the walking part. As a member of the fire district’s Health and Wellness Committee, he is actively involved with helping fellow first responders make healthy choices that improve their lives. He has helped
organize active programs, such as the Iron Firefighter and Take a Hike Fitness challenges. He helps to ensure they are designed to accommodate all levels of fitness and preferences for types of physical activities. “The important thing is to get moving to counteract sitting all day and night,” said Oyola. “There’s no better place than Whidbey to enjoy the outdoors, fresh air and sunshine.” He should know. Oyola and his wife Joann moved to Whidbey Island six years ago from Naples, Fla. They were lifelong east coasters, but after they raised their kids, they decided that living on the West Coast was a great way to
spend the rest of their lives. “We looked at several places, but there were things about Whidbey that spoke to us,” said Oyola. “Being organic vegetarians, we liked the community’s small farms and farmers markets. We can walk down the road and get fresh organic eggs from our neighborhood farmer.” The Oyolas start each day with yoga exercises and katas, along with alternating days of sit-ups, push-ups, running, walking, biking and hiking. SALUTE to FIREFIGHTERS
World shipbuilder turned firefighter lands on Whidbey Island By SHERRYE WYATT For the South Whidbey Record Twenty-seven years is a long time to volunteer for one organization, but for Jim Towers, captain of South Whidbey Fire/EMS stations in Langley and Saratoga, it’s in contrast to a life spent living and working around the world. Towers, who has a lingering sparkle of an English accent, was born in the United Kingdom and has lived in Canada and Australia. As a merchant seaman and shipbuilder, he traveled the globe — the Americas, Asia and Europe. He even worked in the Arctic for a while. But in 1986, when he settled down on Whidbey Island, he decid-
ed to try his hand at firefighting after hearing the organization was looking for volunteers. He never looked back. “Some people work with Little League or Boy Scouts,” said Towers. “But I really like helping people through what can be a very bad day for them, whether it’s a fire, accident or medical emergency. It feels great to be there for them.” Towers commutes to Seattle, where he works full-time as chief engineer for a shipbuilding company. He and his wife, Pat, a chef at Cafe Langley, live on a 10-acre farm where they have one dog and one horse. “We used to have more horses, but now we’re down to one,” he
says. They have two grown daughters who live in the region and still come to visit the home farm. The husband and wife team enjoy hiking and running when they find time between working and volunteering. He says life is pretty darn grand. Having been a volunteer for so many years, Towers says the most successful ones are people who are level headed and prepared to work hard. “The training can be time consuming,” said Towers. “But the reward is the value you bring to your family, neighbors and community. black belts in karate. They also are volunteer assistant instructors in the dojo — a Japanese martial arts training location — at Tiger Martial Arts in Freeland. In addition, Michael and
Jo are both students with the Institute for Integrated Nutrition, studying wellness and nutrition to become health coaches and nutrition counselors in their new online business, Your Health Buddies. They practice Hippocrates’ philosophy of “Let food be thy medi-
cine and medicine be thy food,” and they believe it’s time for a new approach in health care by using health and nutritional coaching to assist in the prevention and treatment of disease. Oyola works as an instructor for the Army National Guard, and spends off-hours keeping his classic 1979 MG sports car running and working constantly on the neverending home improvement “Honey Do” list. While health and wellness are part of Oyola’s DNA, so is volunteering. He’s been a volunteer firefighter and EMT with South Whidbey Fire/EMS for five years, and has also been involved with the Community Emergency Response Team, Medical Reserve Corps, American Red Cross, Mountaineers, and Washington State Emergency Management Division. He volunteered for one year in the AmeriCorps
program for Island County Department of Emergency Management as well. And now his wife has signed up to attend the next Fire Training Academy. “I live by the belief that whatever you receive or take from the community, you should give back similarly in some way,” said Oyola. “It’s especially important in preserving what is special about the South Whidbey community.” He encourages people to learn survival skills, how to handle crisis situations and to gain compassion for those in trouble. He says these are skills you can use the rest of your life to help your own family and your neighbors. “As volunteers, we rise up to help others in their time of need,” he said. “In that role, I think we can be models for the community.”

The post will be open for activities at 5 p.m., children’s activities will go through 7 p.m., and the haunted house will stay open until 10 p.m. The post is located at 14096 Highway 525 in Langley. Tickets are $6 for the event. The cost is reduced by $1 if visitors bring a canned food or non-perishable item. Proceeds of the event benefit SWHS senior class graduation night.

Clinton will provide the Clinton Halloween Community Trick or Treat event, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. This is the second year of the event and organizer Jason Kalk of Lincoln Computers hopes to see an increase in attendance. The event is free and businesses will provide candy for children dressedup for the holiday. The event is sponsored by local businesses in the area and has grown from 27 participating businesses last year to the 43 that signed up this Halloween. South Whidbey Record publisher Kimberlly Winjum started the event last year to bring more people to Clinton’s businesses. This year Kalk took the helm and made phone calls throughout the community, created flyers and put signs up in windows of participating businesses so children and families know where to go. “It’s a fun event to bridge the gap between residents and business owners, to show there are still viable businesses in Clinton,” he

A haunted house, however, isn’t for everyone. Moving in another direction, the Whidbey Island Waldorf School is hosting an Enchanted Forest from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. The forest is a wonderfilled celebration where music, cider and a roaring campfire greet guests. The costumed-event will feature a magician, a jack-o-lantern display and pumpkin bowling. The event is a fundraiser for the school’s 8th grade class. Entrance to the forest is $5 per person or a family rate of $10 to $20 per family. The Island Church of Whidbey will also host their annual Harvest Carnival on Thursday, Oct. 31. The carnival features games and candy from 5 to 8 p.m.

By LORINDA KAY South Whidbey Record The crows have landed and they are all over downtown Langley. No, not the flying black Aves that populate many streets and backyards in town. These crows were created by metal artist Scott Alexander and wood artist Mike McVay. Just in time for Halloween, Langley Main Street Association has erected the three-to-six-foot metal and wood crows to enhance and add a bit of seasonal intrigue to the downtown area. “Main Street likes to feature what is authentic about Langley, like our waterfront and gray whales and like crows,” said Main Street President Janet Ploof, explaining why crows were selected. “Crows are smart and quirky, like Langley. They make perfect Halloween fellows.” The crows will add to the ambiance as downtown merchants invite youngsters to Trick or Treat on Halloween, Oct. 31 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Just look for the Spooktacular poster in participating shop windows and doors. The crows will continue to reside in the town through Christmas, bearing cranberries, apples or holly, and through the New Year’s Eve bonfire bash at the Whale Bell Park, according to Ploof. Several smaller feathered crows are on display in shop windows, crow flags are flying, and crow art graces several galleries and shops. Visitors have taken notice
and begun to comment on the art. Alex Walters, from Seattle, was explaining to his two children that crows talk to one another, and do so in a very advanced fashion. According to Walters, researchers from the University of Washington have studied crows and discovered that they recognize and remember faces, and then pass along the information to other crows. The study was featured in a 2008 story in the New York Times, www. nytimes.com/2008/08/26/ science/26crow.html, or search “Friend or Foe? Crows never forget a face, it seems.” Walters added that scientists debate whether or not crows actually have a language, but they readily acknowledge that crows have regional dialects, according to Walters. Crows have a long storied history with mankind. In Native American Indian Mythology, crows were credited as the creators of the world and as the trickster gods, due to their baffling intelligence. Ploof invites the public to come see the crows and visit downtown Langley, trick-ortreat for Halloween and enjoy shopping and dining. “Crows stand out for the holidays,” Ploof said, “adding a compelling feature to Langley, where there is always something new to experience.

After visiting and talking with a health official recently because of neighbor’s illegally pumping a septic tank and dumping it elsewhere, and where there are two and three mobile homes hooked up illegally to the same system, and another mobile home with 7 to 10 adults living there with garbage piled up outside, I believe it to be a drug house with the number of cars and people coming and going. The health official said they have only one person to enforce septic rules and that she is the only official who handles complaints. There are approximately 1,000 septic systems in Island County that are not up to code or working. Wake up, islanders, before we can no longer

Is the destiny and health of this district, of this patient to be the primary concern? Or are we hoping for harmony above all, even in the absence of the insight a 30-year veteran of the district carries? We need to ask ourselves whether we support the interests of the children, or of the adults who prefer not to deal with questions or controversy. Much too often these interests are in conflict and compete in our schools. Were Rocco Gianni truly to be a disruptive presence on the board, he is easily outvoted by the other four members. Whether it’s Old Man Winter, a natural or manmade disaster, unplanned catastrophes can catch anyone unaware. So when the unexpected happens, be ready. That doesn’t mean making a quick trip to the store to buy supplies the day of. It means being prepared with both supplies and a plan, several of them in fact. Here are a few tips to get you started.
The right supplies The American Red Cross and Puget Sound Energy have teamed up for the Safe in the Sound campaign. Over the next three years, their goal is to ensure at least one member of every household in Western Washington is prepared to respond to a disaster. That’s at least 1 million people. Beginning with supplies, the organizations recommend the preparation of two kits, one for personal use and one for the entire family. Personal kits should contain three days of supplies in a bag or backpack. Keep one at home, one in your car and one at work. Think of it as having three is better than having none. A family kit should have at least two weeks of supplies for the entire family. Store it in a sturdy container and keep it at home. All kits, whether they be for the family or just you, should contain three essential items: water — one gallon for each individual per day with a minimum of thee days — a week’s worth of non-perishable food and a first aid kit. • Additional items should include: • Flashlights or light sticks
• Radios • Extra batteries • Copies of important documents and a map • Family contact information • Hygiene items, tools, toys and comfort items • Digital photos of pets to help with reunification
Make plans Another essential preparation is to create a plan. Begin by talking with your family, identify roles of each person, speak with childcare providers and connect with employers and coworkers. Next, the actual plan should identify two exits from each room in your home, an out-of-area phone contact, and what will be done, where to meet up following an incident in various events and how. Finally, practice earthquake, fire and city evacuation drills at least twice a year. It will ensure that all your plans go as smoothly as possible. Other means of preparation include:

• Post emergency telephone numbers and your location by phones (fire, police, ambulance, etc.) • Teach children how and when to call 911 or your local Emergency Medical Services number for emergency help. • Determine the best escape routes from your home, especially from upper floors. • Find the safe spots in your home for each type of disaster.
• Show each family member how and when to turn off the water, gas and electricity at the main switches. • Check if you have adequate insurance coverage. • Teach each family member how to use the fire extinguisher, and show them where it’s kept. • Install smoke detectors on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms. • Conduct a home hazard hunt.
• Stock emergency supplies and assemble a disaster supplies kit. • Download smartphone apps to stay prepared and ready to respond.
Pooch prep Finally, just as humans require essential items to survive, so do pets. Emergencies can require responding at a moment’s notice and it is critical to have a kit ready for
your pet in these situations. Keep a container that is easy to grab-and-go with at least 3 days of survival items for your animal. Your pet’s kit should include: • Water • Food • Folding bowls • Cat litter/pan • Manual can opener • Pet identification and current photos of your pet for use in the event they are lost • Contact information for your pet’s veterinarian • Medical records in waterproof containers • Pet’s leash, harness and/ or carriers to transport pets safely • Blankets, toys and comfort items • List of pet boarding locations Know which friends, relatives, boarding facilities, animal shelters or veterinarians can care for your animals in an emergency and prepare a list with phone numbers. The new $500,000 marine response boat was designed to fight fires from and on the water, as well as quickly respond to any distress calls around South Whidbey’s shores. called monitors atop the pilot house and at the bow that pump 750 gallons of seawater per minute. “It’s not just a boat with a squirt gun on top,” Leonard said. Recently, South Whidbey Fire/EMS considered five change orders totaling $8,000 for the boat. They covered items like sound-deadening material above the engine compartment doors to keep the monstrous motors as silent as possible on the deck, the oil change process for the engines, and zinc plates used to keep the hull intact, which are mounted on the motors’ jets. Fire district commissioners approved three of the change orders — a new
oil change system, a Garmin depth finder and sound-deadening insulation — totaling $4,088. Even with the added cost, the boat is well within the project’s 10 percent reserve of $50,000. Construction of the boat is expected to wrap up by mid-December. Sea trials are slated for Dec. 15. Choosing a name for the vessel has yet to occur. Palmer said the fire protection district is considering a community naming contest, but if that comes about he’d still like the name to represent South Whidbey. “What I’d like to see is we tie it to South Whidbey Island,” he said. “It’s this community that is providing it.”

“Inside every chef is an owner dying to get out,” he said. Each chef wants the opportunity to call the shots and create the menus, he said. Colburn began the restaurant just that way. He created his own menu based on fine dining, but soon found customers were not willing to pay fine-dining prices and he reverted to his roots — comfort foods. Colburn then began creating his soon-tobe staples such as a hollandaise sauce for eggs benedict, prime rib and fresh Dungeness crab. That menu got more traction and now appeals to people looking for good food at a good value, Colburn said. “My focus is to market to the locals,” he said. The restaurant took a big step in supporting locals three years ago by switching their ingredients to locallygrown foods and suppliers. The decision has since put $40,000 back into the local economy, Colburn said. Another joy for Colburn is working with his employees. Colburn said one of his favorite memories is working with hundreds of teenagers over the years. “I’ve watched them go from

a shy dishwasher to a competent cook. For me, that’s one of the neatest things,” he said. One of the things he is most proud of is the average length his employees have stayed at the restaurant — about 13 years, with many people working at the restaurant for 15 to 20 years. Colburn said he takes pride in providing food that’s not expected on the “little island off the coast of Everett.” In the future, Colburn is looking forward to selling the restaurant and retiring, but that’s not to be expected anytime soon. Colburn said one of the reasons for his success is working hard to provide good, local and healthy products at a good price. “I was never interested in having the cheapest food — I am interested in the best value,” he said.
