Free Pierce County workshops aim to explain Affordable Care Act

Posted online Tues., Oct. 22 Pierce County is offering four workshops next month to help local residents navigate the Affordable Care Act, which takes effect next year and is expected to significantly change the healthcare landscape. The workshops, entitled "Deciphering the Affordable Care Act," will provide a comprehensive overview of the Affordable Care Act, the basic provisions that consumers will notice, and how to get personal, one-on one help in choosing the best insurance plan and benefit from available subsidies to help reduce the cost. The workshops will be held on Mon., Nov. 4, from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. at the Pierce County Annex Main Meeting Room, located at 2401 S. 35th St., in Tacoma; Mon., Nov. 4, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Sound View Building, located at 3602 Pacific Avenue, in Tacoma; Tues., Nov. 5, from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m., at the County-City Building Rainier Conference Room, located at 930 Tacoma Ave. S., 7th Floor, in Tacoma; and Tues., Nov. 5, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Sound View Building, located at 3602 Pacific Avenue, in Tacoma. "The Affordable Care Act has much to it," said Aaron Van Valkenburg, Manager of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources. "Understanding the Affordable Care Act and its many provisions is important if people are going to benefit from it fully. Even if people have their own insurance through work or Medicare, it would be important to know what is and is not part of the Act." "Deciphering the Affordable Care Act" will be presented by the Pierce County Aging and Disability Resource Center. The workshop offers the opportunity for participants to ask questions about their own situation and how to connect with In-Person Assisters in Pierce County. Open house planned for Eastside Community Center

Metro Parks Tacoma will hold an open house next month to discuss the possibility of building a new state-of-the-art community center on Tacoma's eastside. Earlier this month, Metro Parks Tacoma officials announced a feasibility study was under way for a new community center in response to concerns of neighborhood residents who have advocated for healthy, safe activities for local youth. The study will address service gaps and community needs in the areas of health and recreation activities, social gathering spaces, and educational and cultural opportunities. It is planned for completion early next year. The study is a partnership between the City of Tacoma, Metro Parks Tacoma, Tacoma Housing Authority, and the Tacoma School District. An open house on Oct. 2 invited neighborhood residents to form small focus groups to brainstorm ideas for programming, site location, and what they believe a community center should look like. It was the first of two opportunities for community members to share their ideas. "This is an exciting time," said Tacoma Deputy Mayor Marty Campbell, who also represents District 4 on Tacoma City Council. "The discussions about this project with our partner organizations have been great so far, and I'm looking forward to hearing more input from the community." Metro Parks Tacoma is also inviting residents to participate in a survey online at surveymonkey. com/s/Eastside-Tacoma. The next open house will be held on Thurs., Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Stewart Heights Pool (Splash Room), located at 402 E. 56th St., in Tacoma. Port of Tacoma News Port of Tacoma container volumes up 15 percent through third quarter of 2013 Container volumes through the Port of Tacoma posted a 15 percent gain year to date through September to more than 1.4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Full import containers improved 23 percent to 520,765 TEUs on the year, while exports were up 21 percent to 383,029 TEUs. Domestic volumes remained flat, down 1 percent to 341,902 TEUs. Month-over-month container volumes continued to decline but at a slower pace than the previous month. Volumes fell 5 percent last month compared to September 2012. In other year-to-date cargo news, intermodal rail lifts grew 16 percent, reflecting the gains in container volumes, and log exports posted a 29 percent increase, though volumes are expected to soften in the fourth quarter as the construction season slows in China. Auto imports remained flat and breakbulk volumes continued to lag behind last year's record-breaking volumes, down 20 percent. PUBLIC NOTICES Port of Tacoma PUBLIC NOTICE DETERMINATION OF NONSIGNIFICANCE WAC 197-11-970 Project Name: Upper Clear Creek Mitigation Project Description of Proposal: The proposal involves creating an approximately 41-acre habitat mitiga-­ tion site by rehabilitating and re-estab-­ lishing (i.e., creating) floodplain wet-­ lands from degraded wetlands and up-­ land/pasture; enhancing upland buffer habitat; re-meandering the existing channelized Clear Creek back through the floodplain; and installing various floodplain habitat enhancements such as ponds, alcoves, hummocks, and large woody material (i.e., downedwood and snags). The purpose of the mitigation is two-fold: 1) to provide compensation for wetland impacts on the Blair Peninsula, specifically, the Al-­ exander Avenue Wetland and the for-­ mer Tacoma Public Utilities site wet-­ lands (Settlement Area), and 2) to pro-­ vide advance mitigation for future Port development projects that require mit-­ igation for unavoidable impacts to aquatic resources (Advance Mitigation Area). The Settlement Area was devel-­ oped in support of the consent decree in United States v. Port of Tacoma, et al., No. 11-cv-05253-RJB and in sup-­ port of the City of Tacoma wetland vi-­ olation cases 60000071915 & 60000071917 associated with a pre-­ vious City of Tacoma permit file num-­ ber WET2007-40000107491.
