New FDA Approved Treatment Proven to Relieve Knee Pain Patient Satisfaction Rate at 0ver 85%
D
There have been over 2,500 published medical research papers on the subject of laser therapy, accelerated injury healing and pain relief. STEP TWO is to use advanced, leading edge, live motion ultrasound technology so our doctors can pinpoint your problem area with extreme accuracy. A viscosupplement is then gently and specifically injected and the healing process begins. Viscosupplementation bonds with naturally occuring joint fluid to create a lubricating and cushioning layer. It also reduces pain, inflammation, and swelling of the joint. Treatment is basically painless and can be completed during a lunch break with no down time.
id you know that over 100 million Americans suffer from knee and joint pain? In fact, this pain accounts for 25% of all visits to primary care physicians and half of all anti-inflammatory drug prescriptions. Approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually fo NSAID-related GI complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone.*
Have you wondered how different your life could be if you could get rid of your knee pain? Where could you go? What could you do? What would you give for a day or a week or a lifetime of pain free mobility? We’re pleased to announce that knee pain sufferers don’t have to wait any longer to get the most advanced non-surgical FDA approved treatment. If you suffer from any degree of knee pain, we invite you to regain control of your life by visiting The Bellevue Pain Institute a state of the art medical facility. What is osteoarthritis (OA)? Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. It causes the surface layer of cartilage to break down and wear away. This allows the “bone on bone” pain as they rub together resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint. It is a very progressive disease that advances gradually in some and rapidly in others. What causes osteoarthritis? There is no single cause of osteoarthritis. Factors that are known to cause it include: • Poor joint lubrication • Being more than 20 pounds overweight • Getting older • Joint injuries • Mal-aligned or unbalanced joints • Stresses on the joints from certain activities including sports, work and leisure activities What is Viscosupplementation? The lining of your healthy joint capsules contain synovial cells, which secrete a thick viscous and slippery synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid contributes to the nourishment of the cartilage; helps eliminate waste products and acts as a shock absorber inside the joint. One change that happens is the synovial fluid becomes thinner and less lubricant for the joint. With viscosupplementation, hyaluronate
When will I feel results? After a short series of injections, most people feel better in a matter of days or weeks and can begin enjoying their everyday activites again.
which is found in your synovial fluid, is precisely and painlessly injected directly into the knee joint. This makes your synovial fluid act as a better lubricant. How does it work? Yes! Hyaluronate is one of the most heavily researched subtances in medicine today with thousands of trials proving its effectiveness for joint lubrication. It reduces pain and improves function of the joint. In many cases, getting this injection may help to postpone or prevent the need for knee replacement surgery. Viscosupplementation is a very good option when you have an OA of the knee. Hyaluronic acid is reduced or lost with those who suffer from osteoarthritis. The easiest way to think of the injection is that they help replace the joints natural fluid, it’s like changing the oil in your car. If your car were to run low on oil you would have some serious wear and tear on the moving parts. More oil would be necessary to remedy the situation. How does this treatment work? The proprietary protocol used at Bellevue Pain Institute includes: STEP ONE the use of deep tissue Laser Therapy at a very specific wavelength to deliver a soothing, deep penetrating photonic energy, to interact with tissues at the cellular level. Higher levels of ATP are produced which then increases the metabolic activity within the cell, improves the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane and initiates the release of nitric oxide which brings about physiological changes. The inflammation and pain is reduced, and this creates increased circulation in the knee. The damaged tissues are able to begin the natural process of repair. Laser technology is an innovative, scientifically based treatment. Scientist discovered that lasers could be used to accelerate how fast the body heals after surgery.

Downsizing to Simplicity...
n ever increasing number of boomers and their aging parents are simplifying their lives. For many, this process begins with downsizing belongings and weighing the pro’s and con’s of moving to a smaller house, condo, or retirement living apartment. Moving to a smaller space requires extensive planning and careful consideration of both your current home’s style and function. Most importantly, you must consider your current lifestyle and how you intend to live your daily life in the future. The best way to prepare for a future move is to define your priorities and develop a holistic transition plan. The effort you dedicate now will help minimize moving unnecessary items – reducing clutter in your new living space and saving you money in the moving process. Following are tips and techniques from Benevia, the “Senior Moving Division” of Hansen Bros. Moving & Storage. Plan: Create a plan with goals, timelines, and people involved. Plan the work and work the plan! Pace: Start early, dividing the work into achievable parts. Reward yourself along the way. Begin: Choose locations that are not part of daily life such as storage lockers or garage.
Ask: Ask yourself the following questions regarding each item: • Does it enhance my quality of life? • Do I really use this? Do I like this? • Would this item fit in my new location? • Is it valuable? Should I sell it? • Does this fit my new lifestyle? • Do I really need a full set? Dots: Don’t disrupt your living environment. Use adhesive colored dots to sort items into one of the following groups: Keep, Sell, Donate, Give Away, Discard. Share: Share heirlooms sooner than later - making it easier to let them go and taking pleasure in watching them received. Value: Have belongings appraised if you think they may be valuable. Shred: Avoid potential identity theft by shredding any unnecessary personal documents Fun: Have some fun! Downsizing can be liberating. It is a time to revisit old memories, while making way for a new chapter in your life.

The most important tip in downsizing is to start NOW! It may be a year or more before you plan to move, but life sometimes surprises us. Having a plan and beginning now will minimize stress and ensure that the belongings you keep and the new living space you choose will support your desired lifestyle. Long-term care homes:
Now Leasing
living with dignity
T
he expression “long-term care” usually refers to 24-hour care given to people who can no longer look after themselves. But when it involves a loved one who only has a limited degree of autonomy due to aging, this expression becomes very personal indeed. Then the very difficult decision has to be taken to admit that our loved one needs long-term care. As long as the person concerned still lives at home, the necessary steps regarding a request for placement in a long-term care home can be made by the person involved, by a family member or a friend. If the individual has already been admitted to a general care or specialized hospital, it is this establishment which will be responsible for taking the necessary steps. Seniors wish to be respected and at the same time remain active during their retirement years, they wish to make
their own decisions on the care they receive, and these considerations must be taken into account when choosing a long-term care home. These homes are a combination of healthcare, both nursing and medical care, on the one hand, and social services on the other hand. As far as social services are concerned, leisure activities will vary from one home to another, depending on available resources. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about this: does the home employ professionals, recreation technicians or social workers. If not, do they have occupational therapists or physiotherapists available several times a week? The answers to these questions can reassure us as to the availability of services within the long-term care facility... and can also give us some idea as to whether the dignity and self-esteem of our loved one will be respected.

Living at home as long as possible W
here do most seniors prefer to live? The vast majority of elderly people want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible, hopefully until the end of their lives. If you have an aging parent who wants to avoid moving into a retirement home, you can support the goal of independence by following a few of these tips. ▲ Help your parent organize important information. Install a notice board in a central location and use it to keep track of all appointments, telephone calls to be made, medications to take, and emergency contact numbers. ▲ A bad fall followed by hospitalization can radically change the life of a senior. Go through your parent’s home together and clear away any obstacles from hallways and stairs, replace any burnt bulbs, and install night lights in hallways.
▲ Many accidents occur in the bathroom, so install safety equipment such as grab bars near the toilet and bath, non-slip bathmats, and sufficient lighting. ▲ The early detection of illnesses can often make a difference in how independent a senior is in the long term. Be sure that your parent consults his or her doctor, optometrist, and other health professionals on a regular basis. Better still, go along on appointments to make sure that all care instructions are clear and that your parent can follow them. ▲ Improperly fitting clothes and shoes are dangerous. Baggy sleeves can catch fire at the stove and floppy slippers can cause a fall. Check your parent’s footwear. Are shoes properly soled with a good gripping material? Throw away worn shoes and slippers and give away any clothes that are too loose-fitting.
A few simple measures can help seniors live independently in their homes for much longer.

T
he circumstances in which a person finally asks for daily and unconditional help from a family member or friend can vary a great deal. Seniors’ Month is a good time to learn how to deal with this responsibility. When the time comes to consider having a caregiver in the home, either part time or full time, you should be aware that the motivation which pushes your children to accept this roll will greatly influence your relationship and your feelings towards them. So this eventuality must be discussed openly and honestly with them: do they really want to help? Is this desire motivated by love or a sense of duty? Are they ready to restrict their present way of life? Moreover, if you decide to go and live with one of your children, rules governing your life together must not be left to chance. Both of you must have some private space adapted to personal needs. Despite this, a period of adjustment will be necessary: it is always a huge transition for seniors, who have always lived independently, to leave
their homes and move in with someone else. The adjustment can also prove to be very complex because of the reversal of the parent-child relationship which existed until then. Urge your caregivers to think about themselves. You are the parent so insist that they pursue an activity just for them, such as dancing classes. And stipulate that they take regular vacations, even if alternative sources of care will be necessary.
Resorting to a caregiver who is close to you requires a great deal of mental and emotional preparation.

Stay in great shape long after 65! D
o you dream of slowing down the effects of aging? If so, you’d better get moving. No matter how old you are it is always possible to maintain or improve your health by adding some sort of physical activity to your routine. Better balance and a higher degree of independence are among the many benefits that seniors gain from exercise. Physical activity also tends to reduce the risk of falls and injury and helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-two diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Best of all, it just makes people feel better! Start gradually but aim to do at least two and a half hours of moderate or intense physical activity every week. Any exercise that lasts longer than ten minutes counts. Biking and brisk walking are considered to be moderate activities if your heart rate increases and you are capable of talking but not singing while you
are moving. Intense physical exercise includes jogging and cross country skiing. During this kind of activity, you need to catch your breath after a few words because of an increased heart rate. Don’t forget to strengthen your muscles and your bones with twice weekly sessions of an activity such as stretching, yoga, walking, weights, climbing stairs, and sit-ups or push-ups. These will invigorate your heart and mind. Get in the habit of looking for opportunities to do some exercise, whether it means going to the park with your grandchildren, walking up the stairs instead of taking an escalator, walking to and from the grocery store instead of going by car, or getting off the bus a few stops from home. Even if you’re not used to it now, you’ll soon see that exercise can be a real source of enjoyment.
10 ways to slow the effects of aging
2. Get sufficient sleep: aim to sleep eight hours a day. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to the skin and can cause unhealthy weight gain and a grim outlook. 3. Use your memory: don’t forget that the brain is a muscle. Give it some exercise with word games, puzzles, and stimulating discussion and readings. 4. Stay active: it’s proven that exercising for 30 minutes a day improves health. Do it every day, if possible. 5. Fill up on antioxidants: colorful fruits and vegetables are full of these compounds that protect the body’s cells and help boost the immune system. 6. Reduce your sugar intake: sugars promote weight gain and accelerate the aging of the skin. There is also some evidence that they compromise the immune system.
Smoking reduces life expectancy by about four years We all age a little bit every day and like it or not, we can’t do anything about it. However, several lifestyle choices can help to slow down the effects of aging. Here are ten examples: 1. Stop smoking: cigarettes reduce a smoker’s life expectancy by about four years, not to mention the aging effects on skin, hair, and teeth.
7. Increase your calcium intake: calcium is essential for healthy skin and bones. 8. Manage your stress: stress makes you look older, so aim for a balanced lifestyle through yoga, meditation, exercise, and rest. 9. Protect yourself from the sun: sun is the most important factor in aging skin and one of the main causes of skin cancer. 10. Drink a lot: good hydration is vital for the body’s organs and for healthy looking skin..
The first step is always the most difficult where physical activity is concerned. After that it’s pure enjoyment!
Ten tricks to keep in mind! Be honest with yourself: when it comes time to exercise your brain, do you tend to give up quickly? It is very useful for people over 50 to be well informed regarding their memory and to fight slowly but surely against memory problems. Here are a few tricks to keep in mind: 1. When you are reading, be attentive and concentrate on what you are reading. 2. To remember someone’s name, a telephone number or a personal identification number, help your memory with associations, repetitions and visualizations. 3. If you have a word on the tip of your tongue, relax and stop consciously searching for it; it will soon come to you. 4. Don’t purchase those medications which supposedly improve memory. There is no proof of their effectiveness. 5. You could however resort to certain supplements such as ginkgo biloba capsules, which can have some effect. 6. Reduce or eliminate sources of distraction such as background noises. 7. Create a classification system at home to store and easily retrieve your documents. 8. Make a list of the things you have to do every day and tick them off as you do them. 9. When you go into another room to get something, block all other thoughts from your mind until you have retrieved the object. 10. To find your car in a parking lot, memorize a landmark close by.

to caring for aging parents

proof the house, and make sure there is adequate lighting.
2. Have the name and phone number of your parents’ doctor, lawyer, pharmacist, hair dresser, grocery store, cab service, and seniors’ transportation service in case you should need to call them.
6. Post important phone numbers, including emergency numbers, where they can easily see them.
3. Make a few calls to find out about seniors’ services in your parents’ community, such as meal delivery services, homemaker programs, adult daycare, in-home healthcare, meal companion services, pet therapy programs, etc. 4. If you live far away, make sure that you have the name of a neighbor, friend, or volunteer who can check in on your parents if there’s trouble. 5. Make sure their home is safe. Install smoke detectors that work, install anti-scald devices, fall-
T
7. Purchase a medical alert system so that your parents can push a button for help from anywhere in the house. 8. Make their home user-friendly. Use lever-style faucets and cabinet handles, raise toilet seats, install handrails and grab bars, and so on. 9. If you feel that your parents’ driving skills have become questionable, perhaps it’s time to make some changes. Start by elevating their pedals, raising their seat, and installing larger mirrors. Have their eyesight checked by an ophthalmologist and talk to their pharmacist and doctor about their
prescriptions to see if their medication could be affecting their driving skills. Look into seniors’ driving safety courses. 10. Visit seniors’ housing facilities so you know what’s out there, and if necessary, put your parents on waiting lists. 11. Make sure your parents have a will and power of attorney that is up to date in order to avoid any future problems. 12. Call them every day or two just to say hello and to see if everything’s alright. If you can’t do this, have family, friends, or volunteers alternate calls or visits. 13. Encourage them to stay active. Look into bowling leagues, bingo nights, book clubs for seniors, dance lessons for the elderly, travel tours, seniors associations, etc. They will thank you for it.
Five tips for finding a suitable retirement home
here are many types of retirement homes available to seniors: smaller homes with a family atmosphere; establishments with hundreds of units; apartments similar to conventional housing; or centres supplying a wide range of care options. How can you sort out all the available information and choose the formula best suited to your or your family’s needs? The following might help you.
Decide on your budget and your care needs Establish in advance the maximum monthly rent that you can afford. Keep in mind that it isn’t wise to pay for services that you won’t really use. For example, you won’t need an apartment with a kitchen if you plan to take all your meals in a dining room.
Visit a lot of homes By comparing services, costs, and atmosphere, you’ll gradually get an idea of what you like and need.
Ask questions What would happen if you lost your independence? Exactly what services are included in the scheduled costs? If you want to avoid being forced to move out at some point in the future, these are essential questions to ask.
Talk to the residents If you know some people who already live in the residence you are considering, they could be a great source of information. They are the best people to talk to regarding the quality of meals, the attitude of employees, and the availability of services. If you don’t know anyone, ask the home to introduce you to some of the residents and take full advantage of your meetings with them.
Spend some time there Ask the home’s management if you can spend a day there as a guest in order to evaluate for yourself the quality of their welcome, the atmosphere, the meals, and the activities. Ultimately, you are the best judge!
