Pedestrian traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14, according to the World Health Organization. The Sumner School District partnered with East Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Sumner Police Department to encourage safe walking skills in celebration of International Walk to School Day, Oct. 9. Daffodil Valley Elementary hosted its inaugural walking school bus as part of the Safe Kids Walk to School Day Parade. It’s that time of year again to take the plunge into Lake Tapps for domestic violence awareness. October was declared Domest ic Violence Awareness Month by Mayor Neil Johnson at the Oct. 8 City Council meeting. The declaration is sponsored by the Exodus House, an organization that works exclusively with homeless families affected by domestic violence. At any given time, the Exodus House helps roughly 42 families in Pierce and south King County, Executive Director Joe O’Neil said. The Exodus House is holding their fourth annual Take the Plunge Against Domestic Violence event Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. at Allan Yorke Park in Bonney Lake. According to O’Neil, each family is unique and

so are the supplies they need. The funds from this event will go toward helping the families get needed supplies such as pots and pans, shower curtains, towels and other items that will allow them to move forward. To register to plunge into the frigid lake or for those not quite brave enough to jump in and would rather donate, visit the Exodus House’s website for more information. Prizes will also be given out to those with the best Halloween costume. “The shock and awe (of jumping into the lake) is a symbolic gesture of what victims experience,” O’Neil said.

The playground would help the children develop gross and fine motor skills, sensory processing, social, cognitive and

adaptive skills. The total funds needed to complete this project is $250,000. So far, the Mountain Meadow PTA has raised $19,000 to purchase the equipment. Weymiller said, additional funds with go toward site preparation and installation. The site preparation is set to begin in early 2014. “Providing our students a developmentally appropriate and handicapped accessible playground enhances their learning,” said Janel Keating, superintendent of the White River School District. “It’s also the right thing to do. Think about it. An appropriate/ accessible place to play should be available for every child.”

around. “The seniors have helped the team grow to the amazing place it is now,” Rushton said. The coach said the brothers have stuck with it, developed their skills and now all the hard work is paying off. When Curtis joined the team, he brought other younger players with him. “Curtis is a top golfer and he has helped turn things around for the team,” Rushton said. Three years ago, the Panthers were winless but this year they are second in the league with a 7-3 record. Curtis finished league play second in points this year. Curtis is a natural golfer and he is harder on himself than Kash, Rushton said. “All I want to do is continue with golf,” Curtis said. He enjoys golf because it is an individual sport, no one is perfect and he likes the challenge. If you mess up, you blame yourself, he said.

onney Lake senior Kash Koltermann and his younger brother sophomore Curtis have played sports since they were little. Kash said their dad is the one who got them into playing sports. “They have always had awesome support from home,” Bonney Lake golf coach JD Rushton said. “Their dad is at every match. You don’t see that often.” They have played everything from soccer, basketball, football, baseball and golf. Now, Curtis holds the No. 1 spot on the Bonney Lake golf team and Kash is in the four spot. When Kash was a freshman and sophomore, the golf team had a losing record, but with his help along with his co-captains seniors Jacob Rash and Quinn Williams they have managed to turn things

Curtis said he would like to work on his short game. “Curtis doesn’t stay angry and you don’t see that a lot,” Rash said. If something doesn’t go his way on one hole, he doesn’t let it affect him on the next, Rash added. Kash on the other hand, plans on playing baseball once he graduates from high school. To him, playing golf is more of a hobby. The challenge for Kash is to stay under control, he said when he plays baseball he doesn’t get as mad at himself as he does when he golfs. Kash said he would like to continue to work on and improve his approach shots. “I’m amazed at how far Kash can hit the ball,” Williams said. When asked who was better, the brothers agreed that Curtis is the better golfer. Kash said his brother is better because Curtis plays more and he understands the game better. Curtis agrees he is the better golfer because golf is a mental

However, he added they are good as brothers but they cannot play together. They’ll end up fighting with each other, he said.

Kash is easy going and Curtis is hard on himself, Rushton added. Honesty is an important part of golf especially in high school golf because you are in charge of keeping your own score. Kash said he knows it would come back to get me if I didn’t play honest. And Curtis added, “(Playing honest) is how we were

raised.” They have witnessed other players cheating and changing their scores during matches. But when they ask those players to fix their scores, they usually change them, Kash said. Not only do the Koltermanns excel on the

Police Blotter

All persons in the police blotter are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Oct. 2 Speeding with a warrant: A motorcycle was stopped for speeding on Angeline Road. The driver had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and a suspended license. He was arrested and booked into Enumclaw jail. Multiple Warrants: A vehicle was pulled over for speeding on Angeline Road at about 8:40 p.m. The driver had no proof of insurance and three outstanding warrants, including a felony warrant for Theft 2 and Trafficking. She was booked into Pierce County Jail for the warrants and was also issued infractions for speeding and no proof insurance. Oct. 3 Interrupted: Officers were dispatched to an interrupted home invasion

on Church Lake Drive East. The reporting person said she was startled awake when two males attempted to enter the sliding glass door in her bedroom. She screamed and they fled off the property. Pierce County Sheriff deputies and Sumner Police Department assisted with containment efforts but nothing of evidentiary value was found. Oct. 4 Vehicle Theft: An employee of a state Route 410 establishment reported the theft of her vehicle from the parking lot. An officer located the vehicle approximately a quarter mile away. No suspect information was available. Theft from Vehicle: An officer responded to the report of a vehicle prowl in the parking lot of a store on Prairie Road East. The vehicle’s owner reported locking all the doors before exiting the vehicle but speculates the rear hatch may have been overlooked. Several items were stolen from the vehicle and no investigative leads were available.

Oct. 7 Under Construction: An officer was dispatched to a burglarized home. The home was under construction but had all exterior doors and locks in place. The garage man door had been forced open and several items were taken from the home. A women’s winter hat was found and booked into evidence. There was no suspect information available. Altered Receipt: An SR 410 retail store reported a fraud incident at about 9:40 a.m. It was discovered that a Coinstar receipt, which was originally issued several days prior, was altered to reflect a much higher amount. The responding officer recorded video surveillance footage and advised employees to call 911 if the suspects return. Theft from Vehicle: A person called to report her purse had been stolen from her vehicle while it was in the parking lot of an SR 410 retail store. The theft occurred sometime between 8 a.m. and noon.

Oct. 8 Identity Theft: A person called to report a fraudulent account had been opened in her name with Century Link. The matter was brought to her attention because the account was recently sent to collections. A case number was provided and the responding officer directed the victim to the BLPD lobby for more information on identity theft. He also suggested she conduct a precautionary credit check on herself. Oct. 9 Shots Fired: At about 12:50 a.m., a person reported hearing three to five gunshots in the vicinity of her residence on 192nd Avenue East. During investigation, a neighbor concurred hearing the shots and showed the responding officer a shell casing, which was found in the roadway. The casing was booked into evidence but no suspect information was available.

Aug. 29 Persistence: A restaurant manager reported a disorderly subject and requested he be removed from the property. Officers were informed the subject has been a problem in the past; jumping over counters and harassing an employee in the parking lot. Responding officers trespassed him from the property, only to receive report that he returned 30 minutes later. He was arrested and is required to appear in court. Sept. 1 Domestic Disturbance: A man called to report his wife was out of control. She was allegedly yelling and throwing objects in the home. Upon arrival, officers found the woman sitting on the floor in her bedroom, visibly intoxicated. Officer told her to calm down and go to bed. She said she would. Sept. 8 Possible Arson: The fire and police department

responded to a vehicle fire. Due to evidence at the scene, it was believed to have been intentionally set. Sept. 20 Trespassing: An officer witnessed a juvenile at the entrance of a business he had been trespassed from for shoplifting. He was arrested without incident and released to his parent. Sept. 28 Moving Vehicle: Officers responded to the report of a female subject being thrown from a vehicle. Investigation revealed the intoxicated subject jumped onto her boyfriend’s vehicle as he was trying to leave. The two were in the midst of an argument and the subject states she doesn’t remember much of the incident. Oct. 3 Asleep at the Wheel: A man fell asleep at the wheel on East Valley Highway and crashed his vehicle into a pole. He wasn’t injured but received medical evaluation as a precaution. Officers gave him a ride home due to the significant damage his vehicle sustained.

Rachel Givens, 23, was killed by a hit-and-run driver 11 p.m. Oct. 5 while she was attempting to cross East Valley Highway in the 2700 block. The vehicle, which surveillance indicates was a small, dark-colored sedan or sports car, was traveling northbound. The Sumner Police Department continues to investigate, but a specific suspect has not been identified as of the press deadline. Givens was a member of the Navajo Nation of the Bitter Water Clan and a 2008 graduate of Auburn Riverside High School. She played soccer and basketball. She attended Cochise College and afterwards became a soccer coach and paraeducator for the Muckleshoot Tribal School. “Love. Love. Love. That’s what Rachel would say and that’s what Rachel did,” said Sarah Franklin, a lifelong friend of the Givens. “Some people go their whole life without knowing love; without knowing a Rachel. At this stage of the investigation, they are hoping to acquire enhancement of the surveillance video from an outside agency. Detectives are monitoring the tip line to eliminate possible suspects. Remembering the loss of a child I dropped a card for my sister in the mail two weeks ago. Yes, a good old fashioned card, with a stamp and everything. It seems such a little thing, but I sent it because I wanted her to know that I was thinking about her. Before I sent it I wrote across the seal: “open Oct. 15.” See, Oct. 15 was Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. It’s a day recognized by my family each year. It’s a chance for us to honor the memory of my Katherine Smith, niece — my sisStaff Writer ter and brotherin-law’s firstborn — to remember the moments of joy her too short existence brought us and to recognize the loss and grief that they have endured. I know I’ll never forget the day I opened my mailbox and found an envelope addressed to “Auntie” or the shock and sadness that reverberated through our family when we found out Sierra Mae’s heart had stopped beating. In 2006 the 109th Congress officially recognized the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day and made it a national day of remembrance and a chance to support those who had lost a child whether it be as an early pregnancy loss, an infant loss, or a time in be-

Will Eastown get the checkered flag? There seems to be no race for sewers in Eastown. Let me explain. Eastown is the east end of Bonney Lake, on state Route 410 between 214th and 233rd/234th Avenues East. The area was annexed into the city of Bonney Lake from Pierce County in 2001 in response to rapid growth and a need for commercial land. Unfortunately, 12 years later the area remains largely undeveloped due to the lack of sewer infrastructure. To resolve the infrastructure barriers, the city prepared an Eastown Subarea Plan with stakeholder involvement and adopted it as part of its Comprehensive Plan in December 2005. The plan was last amended in 2011. Originally at-large Councilman Randy McKibbin (now Position 1 council member) was to solely oversee the stakeholder focus group. This was odd for two reasons: (1) he consistently votes no to development of a sewer system and Eastown and (2) Donn Lewis was the council member for that ward. At that time, the city was divided into five sections called wards with two at-large council members. The council eventually appointed both Donn Lewis and

Randy McKibbin to work with the Eastown stakeholders. Both council members have planning commission backgrounds, and city staff also participated in the group. A scaled back sewer system is underway in the far northeastern part of Eastown. But what about the rest of Eastown? There was a public hearing on Sept. 24 to discuss establishing a sewer development financing contract and utility latecomers agreement (ULA) for Eastown sewers with Kahne Properties, LLC/Landmark Development (Kahne). Bill Moffit spoke on behalf of the property partners who want to enter into a developer’s agreement with the city after the ULA is approved and the easements have been secured, but

not before. And Ed Morris spoke on behalf of the owners of a parcel through which the proposed ULA sewer line would be constructed. They believe the topography of the land allows for connection to the existing sewer system via a gravity line (you know what runs downhill) and they will not benefit from the proposed Kahne ULA system. This parcel is requesting exclusion from the ULA. Kahne has three parcels on the south side of SR 410, near the Whitehouse Restaurant, that require connection to the city sewer system to develop. Kahn has requested establishment of a ULA in order to obtain reimbursement from other property owners that will benefit from his extension of this sewer line. A total of 11 parcels would pay latecomer fees as a result of the ULA. Negotiations with Kahne and discussions with the city Finance Committee has resulted in a resolution being considered that Kahne would contribute 75 percent of the cost to build the sewer system ($271,671) and the city would pay

Panthers win first game of the season

The Bonney Lake Panthers won its first game of the season 38-19 Thursday on the road against the Decatur Gators. Decatur was quick to score, taking a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The Panthers struggled in the first half with penalties and turnovers when it looked like Bonney Lake’s offense was building momentum. An illegal block in the back during the second quarter wiped out an 83 yard touchdown. After the touchdown was overturned the drive ended with a hold-

ing penalty and an interception. The return after the interception brought Decatur to Bonney Lake’s 1-yard line where the Gators fumbled and the Panthers recovered the ball. Decatur gave the ball over on downs and the teams went into halftime with Decatur leading 13-7. From the opening kickoff in the second half, Bonney Lake came out with a different attitude than the first two quarters of play. The biggest change during the game was that some of the older players stepped up, coach Jason Silbaugh said. Senior Robert Combs returned the kickoff for a

touchdown and scored a 2-point conversion, giving the Panthers the lead 15-13. Bonney Lake never looked back. They would go on to score three more touchdowns and a safety, increasing their lead to 38-13. The Gators scored one more time with four seconds left in the game but it wasn’t enough. The Panthers won their first game of the season. “It feels great to get the first win,” Silbaugh said. “It seems that sometimes the first win is the hardest to achieve, especially the longer into the season it takes.” The Panthers travel to Enumclaw to play the Hornets 7 p.m. Friday.

Spartans fought their way to a one point victory over the Cardinals Friday at home. Sumner was quick to score and took a 17-0 lead in the second with 8:40 to play in the half. The Cardinals scored

twice in the second quarter and trailed the Spartans by three entering halftime. Orting controlled the ball for most of the third quarter, scoring with 1:08 remaining. The touchdown moved the Cardinals ahead of Sumner 21-17. “Orting is a good team,” said Sumner coach Keith Ross. “They have some great players on offense and are a difficult team to defend.” In the fourth quarter, Sumner came back and took the lead. Orting traveled down f ield, but the Spartan defense stopped them on the goal line. Cardinals

In 1988 Ronald Reagan proclaimed October to be Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. “When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan,” Reagan said. “When a spouse loses her or his partner they are called a widow or widower. When parents lost their child, there isn’t a word to describe them. This month recognizes the loss os many parents experience across the United States

and around the world. It is also meant to inform and provide resources for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirths, birth defects, SIDS, and other causes.” Pregnancy and infant loss is an all too common tale. Estimates are that approximately 1 million such losses occur each year. It’s a topic that people really don’t like to talk about, and who can blame them— it is a hard thing to talk about, after all. In my experience it seems like most people

know somebody who has been there. In the aftermath of losing Sierra that June I was surprised by how many people I knew had similar stories in their families or circles of friends. Tuesday, my sister arranged pink roses in a vase and dropped off the teddy bears we made last summer at her local labor and delivery unit for moms who lose a baby. I lit a candle in honor of my niece and my oldest sister as part of the wave of light and I paused to remember.

October was declared Community Forestry Month by Mayor Neil Johnson during the Bonney Lake City Council meeting Oct. 8. In the proclamation, Johnson said, “Trees are a key factor in making Bonney Lake a truly

vibrant place to live, work and play.” This proclamation is connected to the declaration Gov. Jay Inslee made on Sept. 23 that October would be Urban and Community Forestry Month in Washington. Since 2005, Bonney Lake has received Tree City USA designation and status, according to the proclama-

tion. Trees can reduce energy costs, increase our home values, keep our air clean and water safe to drink and improve mental health. October is the best time of year to plant trees in Washington. Johnson said he “urges all citizens to plant a tree during the month of October.”

Modern parenting challenges By Gretchen Leigh Columnist

I’ve gotten into the groove of having my oldest daughter home during the day. She graduated from high school and only has evening college classes. I mourned losing my quiet, solitary mornings until I began to realize what a great thing it could be. Since she seemed in no hurry to get a job, I decided she could “work” for me. I wasn’t going to pay her, but if I had to put up with her all morning and afternoon, she might as well be useful to me. So I did some research to justify my plan. I found on theusaonline.com, that in the 17th and early 18th centuries, “these earliest families were productive units, not sentimental, affectionate groupings… Children assisted their parents from an early age… Everywhere, family, business and social order were combined. Emotional satisfaction was not a function of the family.” My daughter is lucky to live in the 21st century. Not only was her function in my husband’s and my lives not for practical contribution, but as a female, she got to go to

school, finish school and go on to higher education. She gets to live in a time when her purpose in our lives is only to add to the affectionate, sentimental and emotional satisfaction of our family unit. But let’s get real here. I had a teenager, graduated from high school, riding the waves of luxury, staying up all hours of the night and sleeping in until noon. Not in my house. I informed her I would not tell her when to go to bed anymore, she was old enough to decide (yes, I’m one of those parents who insist my high school children get 8 hours of sleep, even if it means setting their bedtime). However, I would be getting her up at 8 a.m. and she would be doing chores for me. I figured this would achieve one of two things. She would hate doing chores and hurry up and get a job and/or I would get a lot done around the house. It went well the first couple weeks. She went to bed at a decent hour, I got her up at 8 a.m., I gave her a small list of chores and we began to click along at this rhythm. After a few weeks of this, she started ignoring her alarm knowing all she really had to accomplish that day was to

get to school. I’d get caught up in whatever work I was doing across the house in the computer room and totally forget I even had a child in the house. It also began to take her so long to get up, eat and shower that by the time she was ready, it was time for me to start dinner and time for her to go to school. Then the homework started happening. She is taking art classes, how much homework could there be? Well, when it’s painting, the homework is not so much “home” work, but go to school and work on it work. There went the last of the time for extra chores. Then the next phase began. I was yelling instructions across the house to her the other morning. She was up, dressed and had eaten. No answer. I yelled again (yelling across the house being my preferred model of parenting). Still no answer. I stormed down the hall and into her room, furious that she was ignoring me. She was sitting happily in front of her computer, earphones plugged into her iPod, humming along to the tunes. Life was difficult for parents in the 17th century, but they never had to compete with a computer and an iPod.

can feed the bulb at this point to improve that bloom. Planting early into loose, well-drained soil is what new bulbs need to make strong roots and perform at their peak. If you want to ensure many more blooms in future years you need to feed the foliage of the bulb after it is done f lowering and don’t remove the yellowing leaves for at least six weeks after the f lower fade. Invest in the biggest, fattest and firmest bulbs you can find for the largest blooms this coming spring.

I was impressed with the f lowering onions or alliums that I saw you spray paint purple in your garden. I saw them in person on the Enumclaw garden tour and also saw how you painted them by using a newspaper cone and purple spray paint on your TV show Dig In Seattle. My question is where do I buy bulbs like that and when do I

I was impressed with my f lowering alliums as well – those giant purple orbs looked great all summer and into the fall and I think the spray paint preserved the dried f lower heads so they continue to add color and texture. You can find the huge blooms of alliums at local nurseries, garden centers and from mailorder bulb catalogs. As a member of the onion family these late-spring blooming bulbs are deer and mouse resistant. They do have rather large and f loppy leaves that follow the f lowers but they are one of the few bulbs that you can remove the leaves once the bulbs bloom without harming future f lowers. There are many different varieties of alliums. The giant Globe Master allium has huge blooms up to 10 inches around on strong stems. Mount Everest is a white form, Purple sensation is a deep purple and there are even some blue alliums. Enjoy the blooms

while they are fresh and then wait until the f lowers dry and turn brown before you preserve them with a dusting of spray paint. The hollow stems of these bulbs may grow weak and fall over by mid-summer so I cut them off at ground level and then slip the cut stem over thin garden stakes or wooden dowels to keep them standing upright. •
