Creative activities abound during Tacoma's Art At Work in November

Programming includes music, theater and dance performances; visual art exhibits; film screenings; literary readings; lectures; cultural events; and workshops. All events are open to the public and

Strong turnout for Tacoma's annual CPR Sunday Posted online Mon., Oct. 14 Photo Courtesy Tacoma Fire Department Nearly 800 people visited Foss High School on Sunday to learn lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or "CPR," skills from Tacoma Fire Department staff. More than 50 certified Basic Life Support instructors delivered four free classes that featured one-and-a-half hours of classroom lecture and one hour of hands-on training with CPR mannequins and automated external defibrillators, or "AED's." Attendees also learned what happens when someone calls 9-1-1; how to assess and respond to someone who may have an obstructed airway or need adult, child or infant CPR; how to use an AED; and the essentials of a home first-aid kit. Participants who successfully completed the program received a two-year "citizen level" CPR card from the Tacoma Fire Department.

Live entertainment includes music by Taxi Driver, a molten iron pour by Tacoma Community College, contemporary dance by the BareFoot Collective, urban arts by Fab-5, poetry by Tacoma Poet Laureate Lucas Smiraldo, films by Kat Ogden and Carla Barragan, and a hands-on public art project with Diane Hansen. Attendees can experience the newlyrenovated Foss Waterway Seaport including a new public art piece, "Lot 411," by Bret Lyon. There will be appetizers, dessert and a no-host bar. The event will include recognition of the Tacoma Arts Commission's 2013 funding recipients and the AMOCAT Arts Award winners: Erivan and Helga Haub and family, Puget Sound Book Artists, and David Domkoski. Tacoma Studio Tour -- See the spaces and tools with which 60 local artists create their work. You can ask questions and purchase one-of-a-kind creations. This free, self-guided tour runs Sat., Nov. 2 and Sun., Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and covers 39 locations around Tacoma. All studios will feature demonstrations of the artistic process or will have

TPD could add 15 new vehicles to ďŹ‚eet

Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote this week on whether to award a $414,885 (plus applicable sales tax) contract to Columbia Ford Lincoln of Longview, Wash., for the purchase of 15 current model Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. According to City of Tacoma staff, the new vehicles will replace police cars that have reached the end of their life-cycle and are no longer feasible to maintain. The old police cars will be sold at auction. The new model of police cars was selected because the current fleet model, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, is no longer produced by Ford Motor Company. Additionally, the new vehicles are projected to get at least 20 per cent better fuel efficiency than the old vehicles. Tacoma City Council is expected to vote on a purchase resolution regarding the new vehicles during its meeting on Tues., Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., First Floor, City Council Chambers.
