City Council OKs state grant for urban forest program Posted online Weds., Oct. 9 File Photos By Todd Matthews, Editor Tacoma City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to accept a $10,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to help fund the city's urban forestry program. This is the third grant awarded by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to the City of Tacoma in the past three years for urban forestry efforts. In 2010, Tacoma was awarded a $10,000 grant to assist with Tacoma Municipal Code revisions and stakeholder meetings related to the city's urban forestry and open space programs, and a $20,000 grant to address the city's inventory and strategic urban forest management plan related to Tacoma's neighborhood business districts. A tree near the Rust Mansion in Tacoma's North Slope Historic District (TOP), a Catalpa tree looming over Frisko Freeze (BELOW), and a Spanish Chestnut tree along Sheridan Avenue (BELOW RIGHT) are a few of the many trees that comprise the city's urban forest. The City of Tacoma was recently awarded a grant from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to help fund the city's urban forestry program.

The latest grant will help offset the costs of tree planting projects around the city, such as the Hilltop Diversitree Project, which aims to plant more than 200 trees in Tacoma's Hilltop Business District. The City of Tacoma will mark the beginning of the ambitious project during a tree planting ceremony on Fri., Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at People's Park, located at 900 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood. Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Tacoma City Councilmember Lauren Walker,

and the Washington Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark are scheduled attend the event, which includes a ceremonial tree planting. Additionally, City of Tacoma officials will mark Tacoma's 19th year as a Tree City USA community, 10th year as a Tree Line USA community, and sixth year that the City of Tacoma has received a Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation. During a city council meeting Tuesday to formally accept the grant, Mayor Strickland proclaimed Sat., Oct. 12 Arbor Day and Green Tacoma Day in Tacoma.

Hoptoberfest fundraiser supports Bates Technical College Posted online Weds., Oct. 9 Tacoma's Harmon Brewing Co. has partnered with Bates Technical College‘s Foundation for the annual Hoptoberfest beer-andfood-pairing fundraiser. The event will be held on Weds., Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. in the college's Downtown Campus Auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Ave, in Tacoma. Participants will enjoy six Harmon Brewing Co. brews that complement a five-course meal prepared by students in the college's Culinary Arts program. Tickets are $60 each or two for $100. All proceeds from this event support students in need through scholarships from the college's Foundation. More information is available online at bates.ctc.edu/Hoptoberfest.

City of Tacoma REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS Specification No. PG13-0565F Department of Public UtilitiesTacoma Power Seismic Remediation- Mossyrock Dam Spillway Structure The City of Tacoma is accepting SEALED PROPOSALS for the above solicitation. Submittals will be received and time stamped only at the Purchas-­ ing Division, located in the Tacoma Public Utilities Administration Building North, Main Floor, 3628 South 35th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409. Proposals will be received until 11:00 a.m., Pacific Time, Tues-­ day, November 5, 2013, at which time they will be recorded and for-­ warded to a Selection Advisory Com-­ mittee for evaluation. Proposals are not typically opened and read aloud. An electronic copy of the complete solicitation documents may be viewed and obtained by accessing the City of Tacoma Purchasing website at www.TacomaPurchasing.org. A list of vendors registered for this solicitation is also available at the website. After 1:00 p.m. the day of bid opening, the names of vendors submitting propo-­ sals are posted to the website for pub-­ lic viewing. A pre-proposal meeting will be held at Wednesday, October 21, 2013, at Tacoma Public Utilities, 3628 South

35th Street, Tacoma, Washington 98409, at 1:00 pm in the ABN-LT1 Conference Room. The purpose of the pre-bid meeting is to answer questions about this solicitation and any special or technical requirements, as well as the City’s HUB and LEAP goals, if ap-­ plicable. Project Scope: Provide engineering consultant services to assist Tacoma Power staff with evaluating alterna-­ tives for seismic remediation for the Mossyrock Dam spillway structure components.
