After months of awareness efforts by the SwimSafe coalition, it stands to reason the program was a success. Zero water-related deaths were reported at Lake Tapps during the 2013 summer season. Sponsors of the coalition include: Pierce County, the city of Bonney Lake, East Pierce Fire and Rescue (EPFR), Bonney Lake Police Department (BLPD), Sumner School District, Dieringer School District and Cascade Water Alliance. The coalition was formed in response to three deaths at the lake in 2012. Agency representatives met regularly to discuss community education. Solutions included an amped-up lifejacket loaner program by EPFR and improved signage around the lake. A group of students from Lake Tapps Middle School designed a memorial for Allan Yorke Park, which serves as a solemn reminder to swim safely. BLPD conducted marine patrols and safety inspections, as well as water safety demonstrations at local elementary schools. “The Lake Tapps community stepped up to bring hope out of tragedy by creating a multilayer drowning prevention campaign to help swimmers and boaters,” said Fire Chief Jerry Thorson. “Seeing no water related deaths this

Agape Adoptions collects shoes for children Agape Adoptions delivers donated shoes to children living in Uganda By Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

ing barefoot can lead to infection and disease that could leave those without shoes disabled or permanently disfigured. Agape Adoptions is collecting new or gently-used children’s shoes in all sizes to help youths living in a children’s home in Kampala, Uganda. The drive will continue through Oct. 15 according to Clarissa Moll, communications coordinator for Agape Adop-

tions. Shoes can be dropped off at Agape Adoptions’ office in downtown Sumner. “It is the rainy season in Uganda right now,” Moll said, “so shoes that wear well in wet conditions are best.” Executive Director Myriam Avery will be traveling to Uganda later this month and she will take all donated shoes with her. Food bank to consolidate October declared Domestic Staff Writer

The Bonney Lake Food Bank is in the process of consolidating community distribution by stopping services at the Prairie Ridge Community Center, according to the Bonney Lake Community Resources (BLCR) Board of Directors. The Bonney Lake food bank site will accommodate the change by extending its hours of operation to include five days a week and two evenings. “Due to economic factors, we had to discontinue distribution at the Prairie Ridge Community Center,” said Steve Bowen, Bonney Lake Food Bank director, in a press release. “It was a difficult decision, but one made after a great deal of thought and planning.” The decision to discontinue services in Prairie Ridge was determined through comprehensive surveys by the food bank. Prairie Ridge residents

will be able to obtain food at the Bonney Lake location. “We would only make the decision to discontinue our efforts in Prairie Ridge if we knew that it would not be a hardship on the residents there,” said BLCR Board of Directors President Rex Pulfrey. “Our mission is to provide food to community members who are struggling to put food on the table. We can more effectively and efficiently serve the community at large from a centralized location. No one else is providing this level of service.” The food bank has been distributing food and commodities to residents in need since 2009. It offers a wide variety of food, pet food and personal hygiene items. Over 1,200 families a month are served by the food bank. BLCR oversees the food bank, community garden and Snack Shack. It’s also responsible for operating the Backpack Program,

which supplies healthy meals for students during the summer and weekends. “When a child doesn’t have enough nourishing food, their health and ability to learn is impacted. With support from our partners, donors and volunteers, BLCR is working very hard to alleviate that problem,” Pulfrey said. BLCR serves over 1,200 families monthly including the working poor and those who suffer from crises such as domestic violence, unemployment and medical emergencies. Services are offered to clients living in Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps, Sumner, Buckley, South Prairie, Carbanado and Wilkeson. Zip codes served include: 98321, 98323, 98385, 98390, 98391 and 98396. People who already have a library card may enter a drawing to win a Kindle Fire HD, by bringing a friend to a library to get a card. In Pierce County, there are a number of options for those who are impacted by domestic violence. At the Bonney Lake Justice and Municipal Court building there is a protection order/sexual assault kiosk where individuals can file

a temporary protection order, according to the city website. This kiosk allows those the opportunity to file an order without having to travel to the Tacoma-Pierce CountyCity Building. A clerk at the Bonney Lake location will contact the Domestic Violence Unit in Tacoma and the County Clerk’s office will continue completing the filling process. There are a total of 10 kiosk locations throughout Pierce County, that allow convenient access for those wanting to file a temporary protection order.

Aside from these kiosks, victims of domestic violence can also contact 24-hour help lines throughout Pierce County. And there are shelters and safe houses where people can go if they need to get out of a domestic violence situation. “All of us on the plateau can help by supporting those charities that will help those in need not to mention being available to help family and friends if they find themselves in this deadly situation,” Johnson said.

All persons in the police blotter are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Sept. 26 Cleaned Out: An officer responded to a theft report on 93rd Street East. The thief completely cleaned out a utility trailer of all items, including outdoor recreational equipment and yard tools. There were no suspects at the time of the report. Uncooperative: Shortly after 9:30 p.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop when he observed the driver of a van come to a sudden stop, partially entering the intersection at a steady red light. Upon contact with the driver, the officer recognized signs of intoxication. The subject refused a field sobriety test and was placed

Warrant Arrest: Puyallup police had custody of a subject in the parking lot of a retail store. The subject was confirmed to possess a Bonney Lake Municipal Court warrant for DUI. A Bonney Lake officer responded and booked him into Fife jail. Stolen Starter: A resident of 208th Ave East reported the theft of his vehicle’s starter motor. The theft occurred sometime during the night; no suspect information was available. A report was made to document the theft. Sept. 28 DUI: Two vehicles were seen driving recklessly and appeared to be racing in the rear parking lot of a store on state Route 410. An officer stopped one of the vehicles and the driver exhibited signs

of intoxication, including poor results during a field sobriety test. A records check revealed a suspended license and a confirmed warrant from Renton Police Department. He was placed under arrest and transported to Renton. Drunk Designated Driver: An officer observed a vehicle swerving significantly on Locust Avenue at about 2:45 a.m. The subject exhibited visible signs of impairment and registered over the legal limit on a preliminary breath test. The passenger was recognized from an encounter earlier in the night, when she was the passenger in another DUI. She reported calling the subject to pick her up from the last police stop. Stolen Bike: A bike theft was reported to have occurred during the night or early morning. No suspects were available at the time of report. Boat Motor, Missing:

www.blscourierherald.com A 68th Street East resident reported the theft of his boat’s outboard motor. A lock was placed on the mounting bracket to avoid such incidence but it had been cut. No suspect information was available. Harassment: A woman called to report an ex-coworker was harassing her with nonthreatening, yet persistent and unsolicited text messages. She had little information about the subject and declined a protection order but wanted to document the incident. The responding officer suggested alternative ways to eliminate the behavior, such as blocking his phone number or changing her own number. Sept. 29 Fight: Officers responded to reports of a fight in progress inside a SR 410 grocery store. Upon arrival, two subjects were physically fighting in the parking lot, while

two others stood nearby. Injuries were photographed and a video of the surveillance tape was acquired. The fight began over an inappropriate comment the primary aggressor made to the female subject, according to those involved. The aggressor was arrested for assault in the fourth degree and malicious mischief. Sept. 30 You’ve Been Served: An officer observed a subject on foot and recognized him to have an outstanding warrant with BLPD, as well as a protection order to be served. The subject was detained without incident. A stolen cheesecake was found concealed under his shirt, which he admitted to stealing. It was returned to the grocery store and he was trespassed from there for one year. He was booked into Enumclaw jail under his warrant and the protection order was served.

Sumner Police Ask for Tips in Hit and Run

Police are asking for anyone with any information about a hit and run on Saturday to leave a message for detectives at 253-2995678 (253-299-TIPS). Further review of surveillance video indicates the vehicle is a dark small sedan or sports car, not an SUV as previously speculated. The vehicle will have front-end damage and possible damage to the windshield. On Saturday, October 5 at 22:53, Police received a call about a hit and run on the East Valley Highway. A female in her early 20s had been attempting to cross the East Valley Highway in the 2700 block to the Log Cabin Tavern. She was struck by a vehicle that continued proceeding north on the East Valley Highway. The victim was transported to Tacoma General Hospital and remains in critical condition at this time.

The Sumner fans who moped about the Seahawks’ first loss of the season can keep their spirits up with the undefeated Spartan football team as it rolled to another victory Friday. The Spartans traveled to Franklin Pierce and took down the Cardinals 28-6. “We jumped out to a 28 point lead behind some big plays on offense and a bone jarring defense,” coach Keith Ross said. “We held a good offense to 94 yards and six points.” Sumner scored 14 in the first and second quarters. Franklin Pierce scored six in the third and extra point missed. Brandon Tuilaepa scored on a 12-yard run for the first touchdown. Josh Riley scored second on a 55-yard interception return. DeJon Lynch scored next from six-yards out and Austin Gregg scored on a 47-yard pass play from Chase Fergusen. “Austin Striplin had nine tackles, Troy Salisbury had eight tackles,” Ross said. “We struggled to find our offensive rhythm and have a lot of work to do this week. We are very excited to play Orting. They present a tough offense and will be ready for us. Our kickoff coverage was very

Playing politics at state, federal level Nothing feeds a politician’s campaign coffers quite like a good partisan fight. So it’s no surprise Democratic and Republican members of Congress across the country and here in Washington seized on the recent federal showdown then shutdown to raise campaign cash. “Leadership is a privilege that House Republicans have done little to earn,” began an earnest email sent out by Democratic Congressman Rep. Milotte Film Festival seeks videographers Are you a filmmaker? Consider making a wildlife video! This year’s Milotte Wildlife Film Festival presented by the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society is looking for filmmakers to produce a wildlife presentation of their own. plary group. We were reminded again recently in an article in this newspaper posted online August 29 and written by Daniel Nash. The headline: “City staff raise nearly $1,800 for Shop With A Cop program.” Staff members Carol Paul, Debbie McDonald, Helen Williams, and student Tabitha McDonald raised money throughout the summer selling hot dogs and soft drinks at the city’s summer concert series, as well as popcorn at the Kid’s Club and Friday Night Flix. They did this in honor of another employee, King Cooper, who died suddenly in May 2013. Heads up everyone. Not only do Bonney Lake Police Department (BLPD) employees put together Shop With A Cop, which pairs up officers with youth to take a shopping trip to Target during the holidays, but like Santa’s elves they are also working on the annual Giving Tree toy drive for area children. Conservatives, Tea Party types and most Republicans figured this out long before this bill became law. But, it is too late for your union members, Mr. Hoffa, you helped put the screws to them for your own personal gain. Democrat Sen. Max Baucus, a big proponent of ObamaCare, recently stated that he now realizes ObamaCare is a trainwreck. Welcome to the party Sen. Baucus. But don’t worry, you and your fellow politicians made yourselves

Five years ago, 80 to 90 percent of the people were satisfied with their healthcare insurance and healthcare providers. Now, everybody (except politicians and millionaires) will be equally miserable with their health-

While such an intense storm was a bit earlier than usual, it served as a reminder that trees of concern should be checked out before the arrival of the typical winter weather. Homeowners concerned about tall trees around their residences and neighborhoods can begin to take some important precautions before the storm season arrives. The following tips should be considered to ease concerns about the health and safety of their trees.

Here are some simple ideas for fall decorating: • Arrange a few pine cones, fallen leaves and beautiful stones in a bowl or display on a mantel. Let this be a reminder to enjoy the colors, scents and other changes of the season when you next step outside the door. A football on display is optional. • Staple some large fall leaves onto a length of twine or thick yarn. Use this as a garland to outline a doorway or frame an outdoor window. • Pile fallen leaves into a bushel basket, metal wash tub, or wheelbarrow. Set pumpkins, gourds and all those overgrown zucchini from your garden on top of the leaves. You’ll have your own cornucopia of plenty. • Make a dirt cheap scarecrow from old clothing that you stuff with fallen leaves. Use a bucket or pumpkin for the head of your leaf man. Set him on a bench or against a tree. Creating autumn scarecrows has become quite the art in some parts of the country. You can find scarewomen, scarechildren and pets and scarecrows riding bikes, climbing ladders and even stuck out in fields scaring away the crows.

Ah, the joys of leaf mold will be yours in just a few months if you collect your leaves now, stuff them into large plastic garbage bags and remember to do these three things: add a shovel full of soil to the bag to inoculate the leaves with leaf-chomping soil critters; poke holes into the plastic bag so the decaying leaves can get air; and, finally, store the bags out of site under a shrub, outdoor table or inside a garage or shed for the winter. Come spring you’ll have a leafy, moist mulch to spread around trees and shrubs that will smother the spring weeds and seal in moisture for the summer. Large leaves that fall onto the lawn can be mowed into smaller chunks before bagging. Chopping up the leaves always helps them decompose faster.

Monument to “king coal” legacy By Wally DuChateau During the early 20th century, “king” coal furnished the energy that moved America and, without it, the whole nation would have ground to a halt. Lest we forget, coal was a major contributor to our victories in both world wars. In those bygone days, there were several small mining communities – more accurately, hamlets – scattered around the

immediate Black Diamond area and several miles to the east; i.e., places like Hyde Lake, Palmer, Durham, Elkcoal and Kangley. They were totally dependent on coal. A few were backyard operations that a single family or two owned and worked, but the largest were quintessential company towns in which the homes and a general store were all

owned by the individuals or companies that owned the mines. Today, most of these settlements have vanished, leaving behind nothing more than a few half-buried artifacts and a cemetery or two; for example, Bayne and Franklin. The last of these mines closed in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Coal mining was unrelenting, dirty, unhealthy

work but, owing to some bloody strikes prior to the turn of the century and during the 1920s, the miners were paid fairly well. There were some good-sized veins that were 8 to 10 feet thick; on the other hand, some were so small miners had to crawl around on their hands and knees. It wasn’t recommended for anyone who suffered from bouts of claustrophobia. It was dangerous work. Apparently accidents were commonplace and one or

two workers were killed on a regular basis. In two of the worst catastrophes, 16 men were killed during an explosion at the Lawson Mine in 1910 and 31 perished in a Ravensdale mine in 1915. The legacy of these accidents has inspired the new monument outside the Black Diamond Historical Museum. It’s a memorial not only to the miners killed in the Black Diamond region, but to those killed throughout the entire state. Their names are perma-

Cascade will maintain the lake at the lower end of the recreational range, which is approximately 541 feet until the fall drawdown begins around Nov. 1. Once the drawdown begins, the lake will lower to 539 feet by mid-November. The lake will be fully drawn down to approximately 536 feet after the holidays. The lake will begin refilling in late February, with a full recreational pool level to be reached near mid-April. Anyone choosing to do construction during this period must obtain the appropriate permits from Pierce County, the City of Bonney Lake and the state if required. All paperwork must be completed prior to beginning construction. Permits can be obtained by visiting Cascade’s website. In 2009, the Lake Tapps Community Council and Cascade Water Alliance established a long term agreement ensuring consistent, seasonal lake levels every year. This announcement has been made in accordance with that agreement. Cascade will raise the lake to the allowable 543 foot level at least once per year to ensure homeowners recognize where this level is for future planning.

(I wish the figure would have conveyed more movement as if the pick was being swung.) At any rate, check out the memorial for yourself and, if you’ve never been in the museum, I’d recommend that as well. Both are wonderful tributes to a vanishing way of life.
