Wash. minimum wage to rise Jan. 1

Pierce County begins construction project along Brookdale Road Posted online Tues., Oct. 1 Photo Courtesy Pierce County Pierce County is scheduled to begin a massive sewer main replacement project along Brookdale Road in Parkland today. The county will replace about 5,000 feet of pipe with a 72-inch diameter interceptor pipe. The existing 30-inch diameter sewer pipe is nearing its capacity of seven-million gallons per day, is heavily corroded, and is located in an area affected by high groundwater levels, according to Pierce County officials. Additionally, groundwater seeps into the sewer pipe, reducing its capacity to carry wastewater. The project also includes a new pump station at the northwest corner of Golden Given Road East and Brookdale Road.

The project is expected to last through February 2015. Work will begin at the intersection of A Street and 133rd Street East and move north along A Street to 131st Street East. The project, managed by Pierce County Public Works and Utilities, will continue along 131st Street East to Brookdale Road and end at Golden Given Road East. Traffic will periodically be detoured throughout the work. Signs will be posted when a detour is required and flaggers will assist motorists when necessary. There will be local access during the detours. The county will work with property owners to minimize impacts. Posted online Tues., Oct. 1 Washington's minimum wage will increase to $9.32 per hour beginning Jan. 1, 2014, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) announced Monday. L&I calculates the state's minimum wage each year as required by Initiative 688, approved by Washington voters in 1998. The 13-cent-per-hour increase, from $9.19 to $9.32 an hour, reflects a 1.455 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) over the last 12 months ending Aug. 31. The increase was announced last month by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The CPI-W measures average price changes for goods and services purchased by urban wage earners and clerical workers. The goods and services it monitors include basic living costs such as food, clothing, shelter, fuels and services such as doctor visits. Washington is one of 10 states that adjust the minimum wage based on inflation and the CPI. The others are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon and Vermont. Washington has the highest minimum wage, followed by Oregon, which recently announced its 2014 minimum wage will rise by 15 cents, to $9.10 per hour. Washington's minimum wage applies to workers in both agricultural and non-agricultural jobs, although 14- and 15-year-olds may be paid 85 percent of the adult minimum wage, or $7.92 per hour in 2014. L&I is a state agency that aims to protect the safety, health and security of Washington's 3.2 million workers. The agency has 19 offices throughout Washington, and approximately 2,700 employees.
