We’re ‘Streaming Live’ at the 44th Annual Salmon Days Festival! I recently overheard a group of people talking about what they look forward to most about Salmon Days. Naturally, I proceeded to eavesdrop and justify it in the name of festival research. It was funny, each had a different thing that they enjoyed. Like something out of a promotional ad, they went on to discuss the very reason why we present Salmon Days the way we do, that is to offer something for everyone. One lady recalled years of memories at the Fish Hatchery. If you haven’t been there before, the Hatchery offers an up-close glimpse of the thousands of spawning salmon completing their multi-year, round-trip journey home… a journey starting and ending in Issaquah, but extending throughout the region’s watershed and well into the Pacific Ocean. The dozens of “Friends of the Issaquah Hatchery” (F.I.S.H.) docents will be happy to answer your questions and share more about the amazing life cycle of these iconic northwest creates. A teenager, presumably her son said he most looks forward to the parade. The Grande Parade starts at 10:00am on Saturday and includes
marching bands, floats and other community icons. The youngest of the children obviously was most excited about the Inflatables and Dock Dogs show. This takes place in the Field of Fun. This year, in addition to a Kids’ Stage, the Field of Fun will also have pony rides, an Extreme Air Demonstration Show and Human Hamster Balls. Unfortunately, they left out my personal favorite, the Foods of the World. This is a food court you’ve got to see to believe. With over 60 food vendors, there is something for everyone, and plenty of it. The Salmon Days Festival, in addition to providing family-fun entertainment to more than 180,000 attendees, is also a key element of Issaquah’s economic vitality and non-profit organization support. The Festival provides valuable visibility for the Issaquah community and local businesses and directly supports over 70 local non-profit, service and charitable organizations. Salmon Days is also one of the nation’s most environmentally friendly festivals, an important value and point of pride for the Issaquah community. A special and heartfelt thank you to the more
than 500 Ohfishal Festival volunteers who put in countless hours to make Salmon Days run smooth and safe. Additionally, thank you to the City of Issaquah, Festival and Chamber staff and Board of Directors for producing and supporting our award winning Salmon Days Festival. Getting to the Festival? Make Your Upstream Journey Simple

PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS TO GET YOU TO AND FROM SALMON DAYS
Shuttle Service The Salmon Days shuttle and Swedish Medical Centers have returned to offer a convenient transportation option to and from the festival from three parking locations. Catch the shuttle from Issaquah Park and Ride Transit Center, the Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride or the NEW location just off 56th Ave SE, north of Fed Ex in the parking lot of SpaceLabs Health Care, at 5150 220th Ave SE, Issaquah. Our ecofriendly biodiesel buses arrive every 10-15 minutes to transport you to one of two drop off locations for the festival at Front Street N and NE Dogwood Street. Parking is free at the three pickup locations with shuttle ride costing $2 a person for round trip and free for those attendees 8 and under.
1) The Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride shuttle will drop off and pickup festival patrons on the corner of E. Sunset Way and Second Avenue SE. The Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride is located between NE High Street and NE Park Drive. Take exit 18 off Interstate 90 and follow Highlands Dr. North until a parking structure appears on your left. The entrance will be on the left side of the one way street. The pick-up point for passengers will be in front of Issaquah Highlands Self Storage at 910 NE High St. 2) The SpaceLabs Health Care parking lot at 5150 220th Ave. SE, Issaquah. Just off 56th Ave. SE, (just north of Fed Ex offices) there is ample parking. 3) The Issaquah Park and Ride Transit Center is located on the corner of State Route 900 and Newport Way. It is easy to find by heading south off exit 15 and finding it on the left after the third set of lights. When heading back via shuttle, make sure you return to the same shuttle stop where you were dropped at to ensure you are taken to the correct parking location. The $2 fee is only charged on the return trip from the festival. Children 8 and under ride free. Buses are equipped handicapped accessible. Parking is free at the locations with buses running every 10-15 minutes beginning at 9 am and ending at 7 pm both Saturday and Sunday. Some routes will be temporarily altered during the Grande Parade.
Parking Parking options around the festival are offered by Issaquah non-profits who operate pay parking locations. Locations of these lots vary around the perimeter of the festival and are denoted by bright pink “fish” signs. While parking is convenient and affordable, it is also important to note that all proceeds from your parking payment will go to Issaquah charities, non-profits or service groups who will appreciate your contribution!

And now for the green horns. Ellen Martin ohfishally has the most seniority of the rookies due to her volunteer work she has done for the festival over the course of many years. Ellen manages the vendors and is responsible for booth locations, payments, vendor selection and everything in between. She essentially puts together a mini-city. Ellen has never actually been in a bad mood, but it’s rumored that there was a time several years ago when she was not smiling – this has yet to be confirmed. responsible for making sure everything you see at Salmon Days, fits together. Salmon Days is like a giant jigsaw puzzle with electricity, booths, garbage cans and 180,000 people. Michele would like to be known for her quick wit, electric personality and fun sense of humor… wouldn’t we all, Michele, wouldn’t we all. Andy is our Special Events Coordinator and is a jack of all trades. Whether it’s writing a press release, fixing a computer or keeping inventory of the Festival supplies, Andy seems to get things done faster than all of us combined. It’s for this reason we’ve hidden his car keys somewhere on the Festival grounds. Brian Twiggs is our Spawnsorship Manager and in charge of coming up with unique activities for our Spawnsors to do at Salmon Days and also marketing efforts for the Festival’s Office. We’ve yet to hear MICHELE KLEIMANN an idea from Brian KIM CONN that doesn’t make us first scratch our heads. We failed to tell him that his office becomes the storage room for supplies leading up to the festival. We think he likes having to tunnel to his desk.

This year the Festival’s Office has pulled together Salmon Days with only two returning staff members. Robin Kelley, the Salmon Days Director returns for her 22nd consecutive year as a part of the Festival. Robin oversees Salmon Days in its entirety. Her extensive knowledge of the event and relationships made through the years is a major reason why Salmon Days regularly wins International Awards and is the enjoyable experience that it is. Robin has a world renowned collection of salmon puns and has an Ohfishal Doctorate in Salmontology. Kimberly Conn is the one other veteran on the team. Kim has a knack for knowing what’s in style as she brings all of the fabulous retail Issaquah and Salmon Days items available for purchase. She also heads up

The “Other” 363 Days in Issaquah Every year, Salmon Days brings an estimated 180,000 people to enjoy our city for two days each October. While it is true that Salmon Days puts us on the map each fall, it’s what happens the rest of the year that makes Issaquah such a great place to visit. There’s something to do for everyone. That probably sounds cliché but come back after Salmon Days and let us prove it to you. Looking for something to do as a family? The Cougar Mt. Zoo sits elevated on Cougar Mt. providing unobstructed views of Lake Sammamish. Get up close and personal with cougars and tigers and much more. Issaquah boasts dozens of great parks featuring playgrounds, picnic shelters, walking trails and BBQ pits. The brand new IMAX Regal Movie Theater in the Issaquah Highlands is completely state of the art and the best movie going experience around. For those of you who aren’t stuck at home with a baby and want a night out, Issaquah has several great
options for wine tasting, live music, comedy, outdoor concerts and restaurants to meet every budget and palate. Art enthusiasts can just take a stroll down Front Street and visit all of the boutique stores featuring works from local artists. Each August, you can enjoy the Issaquah Art Walk on Friday nights on Front Street. The Village Theater produces award winning plays in a spectacular venue. They’re gearing up for Les Miserables coming in November. Reality TV making you feel dumber? Educate yourself with a trip to the Issaquah History Museum, Train Depot or library. All have great information and a great way to kill a few hours with or without the kids. We’re seeing a rebirth in the hiking craze. As soon as we get trail maps printed at the Visitor Information Center, they’re off the shelves and into the hands of eager people wanting to explore our three mountains, Squak, Cougar and Tiger. Still haven’t caught the
hiking bug? Lake Sammamish is a great place to fish, waterski and swim. Issaquah is proud of its shopping collection. Gilman Village is a wonderful assortment of boutique stores offering everything from antiques to clothing and everything in between. We also have the things you would only expect in a much larger town. Streaming Live In 2012, for our festival theme we went back to our rodeo roots with Thrills & Gills. This year, it only made sense to look toward our future with Streaming Live. Although we try and keep Salmon Days pure and grounded in our traditions, there’s no doubt that technology, like the salmon, has found its way to our small town. Issaquah High School now has an award-winning robotics program. The Hatchery streams live video of the salmon on their website so that you can watch the salmon from the comfort of your favorite chair. Wifi is being installed throughout historic Issaquah. Some Issaquah elementary students have never been taught from a chalkboard, or even a whiteboard for that matter, smart boards are the new thing. Everything is smarter Things are faster, have more memory,
faster processors, higher resolution, two screens, bigger screens, three screens. It’s all happening so fast. Salmon Days is guilty of this as well, but the technology we’re adopting is kept for the most part in the background. It’s improved our registration processes, booth placements, set-up and clean-up. Technology has improved all of our lives in almost every way imaginable.

Composting Among all of the things this year at Salmon Days is our commitment to keeping a clean and green festival. An event of this size has a way of catching up with our carbon footprint. Ensuring a healthy environment for the salmon is always on our minds. This year, we continue our initiative to use only compostable service ware and to-go containers. This is a joint effort of the City of Issaquah’s Office of Sustainability, CleanScapes and the Salmon Days Office. From straws to plates and everything in between, Salmon Days will again be one of the festivals in the country that requires vendors to use only compostable products. Made from corn, sugar cane, bamboo and wheat by-products, which are all fully compostable, these goods allow Salmon Days organizers to drastically reduce waste destined for the landfill. Friendly volunteers and event professionals from CleanScapes will happily help you dispose of your food containers at our recycle stations. This year it’s more like the Field of Funner! One of the highlights of the festival is always the Field of Fun. It’s our chance to pack as much fun into one area, and we’re getting good. So good in fact, we’re ok with using improper English as the only adjective to describe how much more fun we’ve incorporated this year.
New in 2013!! EXTREME AIRSHOW – Be prepared to be amazed and inspired as some of the world’s best skiers dazzle us with aerial tricks on a massive outdoor ski jump. It’s like our own little X-Games. A huge Thank you needs to go out to Umpqua Bank for wanting to think outside of the box when coming up with the idea for this show. Stop by their booth in the Field of Fun(ner) for some great giveaways and prizes. KIDS’ STAGE – Selena Gomez (made you look!) tickets will be given out as prizes at the Radio Disney Booth. Female Coho Salmon generally lay around 2,000 eggs. Out of those 2,000 eggs, only 2 will make it back as adults to spawn in Issaquah Creek. The main causes of death are natural predators and mankind. Salmon have a better sense of smell than dogs. Coho Salmon, who are the best jumpers - and can jump up to ten feet high. Young Coho salmon frys do not feed until they are four months old. Until that time, they feed off of their own egg sacks. All salmon do not eat once they enter fresh water to spawn.
