nakes. Even the word can bring shudders to those with a fear of the slithery reptiles. But not so with Hamilton, a much beloved snake at Issaquah High School. Biology teacher Bryan Robles was concerned for the welfare of Hamilton, a 3-year-old, 2-and-ahalf-foot long python, that escaped from its cage sometime between 10 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 10 and when Robles returned to his classroom at 7 a.m. the next morning. The high school’s open house was the evening before and Hamilton was still in his cage when Robles finally left for home. Robles said Hamilton grew quite a bit over the summer, so he thinks the snake was able to push the lid up on his cage and begin his great adventure. Robles believed he was hiding somewhere in his classroom, but where, only Hamilton knows.
“He’s on vacation,” Robles said before the python returned Sept. 17. He’s safe in his cage again. When Hamilton disappeared, animal rescue workers, Robles, all three assistant principals and other administrators tore the classroom apart looking for the snake. “He’s hiding somewhere in the classroom, maybe snuggling around water pipes under one of the sinks,” Robles said. “Pythons are not poisonous— they’re a constrictor. They squeeze their prey rather than bite them.” Hamilton was a gift to Robles from a student about a year ago. Robles said the student who gave Hamilton to him, and many other students, were very upset because they have become attached to the snake. Animal rescue suggested Robles leave a

The controversy over injecting storm water into the ground over an aquifer only 600-feet from a well owned by the Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District just got uglier. Last week the district learned from a customer that when she tried to visit the district’s website she was directed to the city of Issaquah’s website. “It immediately took you there,” said Jay Krauss, general manager of the district. The district has two websites: sammplat.wa.org and letstalkaboutourwater.org. Issaquah set up two Internet domains almost identical to the district websites: sammplat. org (they left out the wa) and letstalkaboutourwater.com (instead of .org). “This is our main website,” Krauss said. “It’s absolutely unheard of for one governmental body to hijack another’s website.” In the Internet world this SEE WEBSITE, 11

There are only two races in Issaquah on the Nov. ballot, but a room full of constituents came to hear what they had to say Tuesday night at Blakely Hall. Alison Meryweather and Lisa Callan are running for the only open seat on the Issaquah School District’s board of directors. Meryweather was appointed to the seat in March to replace Chad Magendanz. Meryweather said kid’s should come first, especially those who have no representation. Her top priority, if retained, is to make sure instruction is relevant, and for students and teachers to be prepared for the new core standards. Callan, a former engineer and manager at Boeing, would like to see more project-oriented experiences for kids. Callan said adhering to policy governance – making sure they adhere to community values – continuing to support STEM, and the social and emotional health of kids were among her top priorities. The biggest challenge K-12 students face, Meryweather said, is how to reach every stu-
dent, even those who fall outside the box. She envisions classrooms looking much different as students work at different levels to meet their educational needs. Callan wants to open up opportunities through vocational or technical programs to ensure that every student has a successful future. She supports partnerships with businesses to create more opportuniMeryweather ties for students. The two candidates running for mayor of Issaquah both serve on the City Council. Fred Butler has been re-elected to the council four times. Joe Forkner was chosen from seven candidates in January to Callan serve out the remainder of the council seat vacated by Mark Mullet. If elected, Forkner said he would quit his job and devote his time to being mayor, and “sit down and talk” with citizens. Butler is focused on transportation issues and said he has the experience to motivate city employees. When asked what each candidate would do to bring jobs to Issaquah, Forkner said he’d move forward with the work the economic development department is doing, while balancing growth with the environment and keeping the city sustainable. Butler said it’s important how the city interacts with business, stressing that it should be painless to get a permit. He also said keeping the city safe is important to attract business, mentioning drugs, a growing problem in Issaquah. As far as regional trends that affect Issaquah, both agree transportation is the number one problem people talk about. The audience questions included “Do we need Klahanie?” Forkner said no, that it’s not a plus or a minus. “Putting it to a vote allows citizens to make the choice,” he said. Butler said Issaquah is built on annexations,

Forkner was a city employee for many years, but has worked for a private engineering firm since 1997. He worked on putting city maps together for planning, police, fire and public works when he was with the city and Forkner was also responsible for starting the televising of council meetings.

‘HIJACKED’
Issaquah ploy damages public trust
W
e’re not sure what possessed the city of Issaquah to “hijack” two web domains owned by the Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District. It was an underhanded ploy and unworthy of what we expect of city leaders. The district created the sites to argue the case against Issaquah wanting to pump storm water runoff into the ground near a well used by the district for water for its customers. Issaquah started its own sites, with web addresses so close to the district’s that some people got confused and were sent to the wrong site. We know the water issue is contentions. The water district worries the Issaquah plan could foul the drinking water it provides families and businesses. Issaquah insists that pumping untreated storm water into the ground for the soil to filter it is a safe procedure. Issaquah officials also say the water district is providing misinformation. The final verdict on the water issue won’t be won – or shouldn’t be – through dueling websites. It will – or should – come from the analysis of Department of Ecology experts who are trained and paid to keep the public safe. Issaquah has taken down the confusing websites. That’s good. Next, it should deal with how this wrongheaded decision happened in the first place.

Leaning to left sometimes not good enough
J
ean Berkey, the former Everett state lawmaker who died last month, was a nice lady. She loved to barbecue oysters and collect agates and had a zeal for neatness and organization. She had a deep commitment to the values and candidates of the Democratic Party, helping elect others then serving herself. She spent a decade in Washington’s Legislature landing first in the House then the Senate. Like most in her caucus she leaned left on social issues. Unlike most, she leaned right on Jerry Cornfield fiscal matters. “That was kind of her cross to bear,” the Rev. Dennis Niva told 125 family members, friends and former lawmaking colleagues at a memorial service in Everett on Saturday. And it became the target on her back. In 2010, Berkey lost her bid for re-election to the Senate seat representing Everett, Tulalip and part of Marysville. Losing is part of politics but defeat is harder to accept when supposed friends have a hand in it and, as the state attorney general proved, they cheated. Berkey failed to advance out of the primary in no small part because a Seattle political consultant dumped a wad of money into pounding her conservative stances then secretly spent thousands of dollars to drum up votes for an unknown Republican candidate. Many of those dollars came from the coffers of unions Berkey aided in her tenure. The political legacy of Jean Berkey is not the loss, but what followed it — the ascension of Nick Harper, the decline of Democrats’ power in the Senate and tougher campaign finance laws. Harper, a left-leaning Democrat,

won the seat and is rapidly climbing the ladder of power in the caucus. He is deputy leader and could succeed Sen. Ed Murray as the leader should Murray be elected mayor of Seattle in November. He’s also gaining recognition statewide. In August, he was named the state Democratic Party’s male elected official of the year, an accolade which will ensure Harper receives all the support he’ll need in his re-election campaign next year. While Harper’s win kept the seat in the Democratic column, the manner in which it occurred is a cautionary tale for his party as it reveals how far the left-wing will go in its pursuit of a more liberally pure caucus. Arguably it’s cost Democrats — who hold 26 of the Senate’s 49 seats — control of the chamber. This year two moderate Democratic senators defected to form a coalition with Republicans to run the Senate. Last year, three Democrats did the same thing. They don’t cite Berkey’s election as a reason, but will say the policies of their party’s left-wing are too hard line for them. Unless and until the Democratic Party finds a way to embrace these less liberal members, it will be the Senate’s minority party for an extended period. Another imprint on state politics
left by the 2010 election is its exposure of a gaping hole in campaign finance laws. Moxie Media, that firm hired to take out Berkey, had created several political committees then set about passing donations from one to another. It was a shell game which made it difficult to identify the original source of the money. Moxie Media wasn’t the only one to do it but did it more prolifically than others. It prompted state lawmakers to limit how many committees one group can form and stiffening rules for disclosure to help the public figure out where the money is coming from. At the memorial service, no one mentioned the 2010 election. Niva may have had it in mind when he spoke of the ripple effect Jean Berkey had on the circle of friends around her and in the political world, which she served. “She changed who we are,” he said.

Regardless of who “owns” the station (and the correct answer should be “the taxpayers”) firefighters would continue to respond to emergencies in both communities. This is called mutual aid, and it means that whoever is closest when the call comes in is the one to go. If Sammamish leaves Eastside Fire and Rescue, a Joint Operating Agreement can and should be reached by both cities to keep Station 83 open considering its strategic location and the rapid response times that it
provides to residents in both areas. To close the station would be irresponsible, considering the investment that taxpayers from both communities have made in emergency personnel, the facility and apparatus. There are many issues that residents in Klahanie should consider when voting to annex to Issaquah in February, and public safety is just one of them. I encourage you to ask your local firefighters how we think your family and friends will best be served.

With a 2014 election on the horizon for Klahanie voters to annex themselves in — or stay out — of Issaquah, a group of residents of the planned community told a Monday meeting of the Sammamish City Council they would rather be part of the Plateau. Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District
commissioner Tom Harman, speaking as a private citizen, urged the city to make a case to itself annex Klahanie at the county Boundary Review Board’s public hearing. The public hearing was held at the Issaquah Holiday Inn Wednesday, after The Reporter’s deadline. “It’s interesting,” Harman said. “Sammamish is already on the Plateau, Klahanie’s on the Plateau, but it’s in Issaquah’s (Potential Annexation Area) because …
it was determined to be in Issaquah’s annexation area (in 1972), long before anyone thought there would be a city named Sammamish. For the first time ever, all budget review meetings are being held in council chambers, and are being broadcast on the public access channel. Councilman Tola Marts suggested the change to bring transparency to the process. Monday evening’s budget work session focused on streamlining the process. Budget discussions included hiring two more police officers, potential changes with the city’s relationship with Eastside Fire and Rescue and the $10 million park bond, which will be on the November ballot. Various non-profit organizations’ budget needs were referred to the council’s Safety and Services Committee for review. Mayor Ava Frisinger will present the proposed budget to council Oct. 1 and then to the community on Oct. 7. The council will hold another budget work session Oct. 14. Public hearings will be held Nov. 4 and 16. In other news, the council also unanimously passed an ordinance that would make
it a gross misdemeanor to commit a domestic violence offense in the presence of a child 16-years-old or younger. “This will highlight the case for not exposing children to domestic violence,” said Issaquah Police Operations Commander Scott Behrbaum. The ordinance is modeled after a similar one in Federal Way. Issaquah is the first Eastside community to adopt such an ordinance. “An offender does not
commit domestic violence by accident,” said councilman Josh Schaer. If an offender is found guilty and sentenced to spend less than the maximum statutory sentence – not less than 30 days in jail – the court imposed conditions would include the attendance of certified domestic violence perpetrator treatment as well as a treatment program that addresses the effects of domestic violence on children. Approximately 50 people, including the Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park, a few Issaquah City Council members and park enthusiasts came out Sept. 12 for the official unveiling of the new boardwalk at the park. The structure guides walkers to the mouth of Issaquah Creek. The project was funded by nine Recreation and Conservation Office grants totaling $1.3 million from the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program. Bill Chapman, chairman of the conservation office, said 46 years ago the office helped purchase 126-acres
District Sen. Mark Mullet, who was instrumental in securing $3.5 million for improvements to the park in the 2013 legislative session. Don Hoch, director of Washington State Parks and Recreation, said Lake Sammamish was near and dear to his heart. “This is a premiere project,” Hoch said. “The energy is here, we’ve got the Friends group and community supporters.” It took Cypress Construction four weeks to build the boardwalk, said builder Greg Whiteside. The general contractor was Dave Horton with Santana Construction. The boardwalk is made from Trex, an eco-friendly product made of plastic and wood fibers from reclaimed or recycled resources, including sawdust and used pallets from woodworking operations, and recycled plastic grocery bags from all over the country. It lasts forever Whiteside said. Once Hoch officially cut the ribbon, the crowd walked toward the lake, admiring the project. Afterward refreshments were served in the Park’s rotunda. All aboard: cruise line hosts breast cancer survivors
C
aptain Arjen Van der Loo, who has been at the helm of Holland America’s Oosterdam for the past seven years, says he has “the best job in the world.” With 24 years on the bridge he has seen most of the world. An event held while the elegant ship was in port Sept. 8, has been special for Van der Loo and also for hundreds of breast cancer survivors for six years now. The Oosterdam crew and the Susan Komen Foundation have made it a tradition to invite breast cancer survivors to the ship for a four-course lunch, followed by a program in the ship’s auditorium. It’s a celebration of life and a special day for everyone in attendance. “With breast cancer being the second cause of cancer for women, there is not a person on our staff who hasn’t been touched by this,” Van der Loo said. “We want to share and help this very important cause.” The captain said every week there are four to six breast cancer survivors on board. Holland America supports breast and other cancers with a program called On Deck for a Cause. The program invites cruise guests to participate in a noncompetitive 5K fundraising walk on every sailing aboard each of the line’s 15
ships, with proceeds distributed among the American Cancer Society, and many other cancer research groups. Guests donate $20, and 80 percent is distributed to the organizations with the other 20 percent covering administrative costs. “While our ships are fanning out all over the world, we’ve chosen a foundation to support in several countries,” Van der Loo said. He said he gets goose bumps before the on-deck walks. The Oosterdam has a passenger capacity of 2,100 to 2,300 people, with 60 on the technical crew and another 60 on the navigational crew. The view from the bridge is like being on the top of the world. The various gauges and charts make you feel as though you’re in the Starship Enterprise. But the day was about more than the ship. It was about the survivors. I sat with the most incredible group of women, who have all been down the same road as I. Patti Margeson tested positive for BRCA1, the same gene that Angelina Jolie has. Through Jolie’s fame, BRCA1 has been brought into the national conversation. Research by Dr. Mary-Claire King, a geneticist at the University of Washington, proved her theory that certain breast cancers are hereditary. Margeson’s son, younger sister and cousins are also positive for the gene, but her
daughter is not. Margeson already was scheduled for a lumpectomy, so she elected to have a full hysterectomy at the same time to increase her odds of living. She knows if the breast cancer comes back she is looking at a mastectomy. “Every time I hear a story I second guess everything I did,” Margeson said. “If I get it again I know what I have to do.” Lesli Zielke was diagnosed in 2008 when a mammogram revealed she had cancer in the right breast. She had a lumpectomy followed by radiation, but it came back two years later so she had another lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. Sue-Z Trudell, an attractive, upbeat blonde, was diagnosed in January of 2011, the same month I was diagnosed. She went through chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and radiation and is doing fine now, as are Margeson and Zielke. Then there was Marilyn Hazelton, who said I looked familiar. It turned out we both had reconstructive surgery at the same doctor’s office, just different surgeons. The funny part is, she works there as a nurse. Not only that, we had the exact same procedure, called a TRAMflap, so we were able to compare notes and actually laugh about it. Yes, laugh. But at the time you’re going through it, it’s
not funny. Like all the ladies mentioned above, we all talk about “if it comes back.” It’s a hard thing to shake – the fear and dread of going through it all again. The keynote speaker was author Erica Bauermeister. She said we had all become activists and daredevils in addition to becoming survivors. I don’t know that I’m a daredevil, but I do take chances now that I didn’t before. Because you just never know. This is life, not the dress rehearsal.

If Grandpa is sad because he doesn’t get more frequent visits, offer him some empathy and then steer the conversation back to a neutral topic. If your child is frustrated because he or she would rather be doing something else, offer some understanding and thank them for making an effort. Hopefully, with time, your children will see that visiting elderly grandparents is just a part of taking care of family.

Dex Montenegro of Issaquah will be back in the octagon on October 5 for CageSport XXVII at the Emerald Queen Casino, and so will his fiancee Amy Cadwell. For Cynthia Krass, a 25-mile bike ride is hardly a unique challenge. A 49-year-old mother of two and a Sammamish resident for more than two decades, Krass is also a longtime cyclist who rides frequently in events and on her own. So when she heard six years ago about an opportunity to get on her bike to raise awareness for domestic violence through a new ride called Cycle the WAVE (Women Against Violence Everywhere), she jumped at the chance. “I liked the idea of an all-women’s ride,” she said, adding she knew some of the original organizers from her time with the Lakemont Ladies Cycling Club. For the past six years, Krass has continued to be part of the growing ride and been part of a team that has raised funds and awareness to support domestic violence groups across the state of Washington. After its humble beginnings in 2008 with 233 riders, more than 1,200 women participated in this year’s event. Krass said she began bringing her daughter three years ago and found the ride not only offered a way for the two to connect through cycling, but a chance to discuss the topic of domestic violence, one that can often be difficult for parents to broach. “I was very impressed with the way the messaging came through while we were riding,” Krass said. “They raise awareness for the cause to a bunch of us who maybe don’t see it every day.” Krass echoed that sentiment and said especially for young women like her daughter, a bike ride is the perfect

Issaquah Salmon Days wins gold at awards show The 2012 Issaquah Salmon Days won 11 awards, including a coveted Gold for the Haas Wilkerson Grand Pinnacle Award as the best overall festival in international competition. The awards were given on Sept. 16 by the InternationalFestivals and Events Association, the governing body and association responsible for the festival awards each year. "I am so grateful to a part of such an amazing community of people who have
made Salmon Days what it is for the last 43 years," said Festival Director, Robin Kelley. "It has always been the best to us; it's nice and humbling to see it recognized on the world stage." This is the 57th IFEA award for Salmon Days since 2004 and the second time it has won Gold in the Grand Pinnacle. Salmon Days 2013 takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 5-6 in downtown Issaquah.

Jerry Greenfield, one-half of the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream guys, stopped at the Issaquah Highlands’s store Sept. 13 to push for approval of Initiative 522. The initiative, which is on the November ballot, would require mandatory labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms. GMO’s are organisms that have had their genetic makeup, or DNA, altered through genetic engineering in a way that does not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Washington is the only state with an initiative on the November ballot that would require mandatory labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms. If I-522 passes, the state would join Connecticut and Maine in doing so. Opponents of I-522 argue it will be expensive and hurt farmers. Greenfield said that’s absurd because food companies are always going through labeling changes. He said 1-522 is simply about telling consumers what is in the food they are thinking of purchasing and eating. “It’s about being transparent,” Green-
field said. “If GMO is in the food, let people know.” Ben and Jerry’s ice cream does not contain any GMOs. Greenfield said the price of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream will not go up because of the labeling. Elizabeth Larter, communications director with I-522, said the initiative would require most foods in grocery stores to be labeled, including genetically modified salmon. Larter said Alaska passed a regulation in 2005 that requires fish to be labeled if it is farmed or fresh. Luke Esser, a former Republican legislator from Bellevue and a consultant for I-522, was at the event and called the measure “a populist measure, not political.” Neighbors came out to meet Greenfield, while the owner of the Issaquah Highlands Ben and Jerry’s, Sen. Mark Mullet, was enjoying a casual day in jeans and a T-shirt, while treating everyone to a free scoop of the flavor of their choice. As a reporter for Sound Publishing, you will be expected to: • use a digital camera to take photographs of the stories you cover; • post on the publication’s web site; • blog and use Twitter on the web; • layout pages, using InDesign; • shoot and edit videos for the web . • The most highly valued traits are: commitment to community journalism and everything from short, brief-type stories about people and events to examining issues facing the community; • to be inquisitive and resourceful in the coverage of assigned beats; • to be comfortable producing five bylined stories a week; • the ability to write stories that are tight and to the point; • to be a motivated self-starter; • to be able to establish a rapport with the community. Candidates must have excellent communication and organizational skills, and be able to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment. Minimum of one year of previous newspaper experience is required. Position also requires use of personal vehicle, possession of valid WA State Driver’s License and proof of active vehicle insurance.
