Events Abound in Edmonds
E
vents abound in Edmonds all summer; from the Third Thursday Art Walks, to the Concerts in the Park, the well-known Taste of Edmonds, and the bountiful and bustling Saturday Market all provide plenty to see and do in this quaint town on the Puget Sound. As the season winds down and Edmonds is basking in the glow of another cheerful, busy summer the town looks ahead to a plethora of happenings it heads into fall and the holiday season. If you have never had "An Edmonds Kind of Day" there is ample opportunity to visit this friendly, adorable town which boasts a locale on the sound, views of the Olympic Mountains and fantastic shopping and dining this time of year. The Edmonds Summer Market boasts 120 vendors providing local produce, beautiful floral bouquets, delicious food products, artisan crafts and much more. The market runs every Saturday through Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in downtown Edmonds off of Main Street and Fifth, to Bell Street. This highly popular market has something for everyone and is a great opportunity to support local farmers and businesses. The annual Classic Car Show in Edmonds will be on Sept. 8, in the downtown area. On this day in Edmonds, the only cars you will find on the streets are in excess of 300 classics proudly displayed in this car show. This event is free and family friendly, providing a great opportunity to enjoy the vehicles, explore local shops and restaurants while having some quality time in this traditionally warm month in the Pacific Northwest. If you are a lover of art and creative endeavors, the Third Thursday Art Walks are a must attend event. Edmonds boasts one of the largest art walks in the state with more than 40 merchants displaying the work of local artists. The Art Walk runs all year, with upcoming events on Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19, all from 5-8 p.m. As you stroll around 6
the town discovering unique and beautiful pieces, you can also enjoy refreshments and snacks alongside performances by local musicians. Every year downtown Edmonds is a buzz on Halloween with a plethora of costumed trick-or-treaters. On Oct. 31, from 5-7 p.m., join the Halloween celebration. All are invited to dress up and enjoy a trickor-treating experience that won't soon be forgotten. Local stores and vendors will be giving out tricks and treats amongst the streets of downtown Edmonds that are shut-down to vehicle traffic to ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for all. Family and pet friendly. Once all of the leaves have fallen, Edmonds celebrates the beauty of the Evergreen adorned with lights. The Tree-Lighting Ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, and includes an evening of caroling, festive treats and an appearance by Santa Claus. Start the holiday season with good tidings and cheer in Edmonds, taking in the downtown area which is always beautifully adorned with lights and garland. Continue the holiday traditions and watch the Christmas Ships set sail at the Port of Edmonds on Dec. l0 at 7 p.m. The performance runs from 7:10-7:30 at the Edmonds Fishing Pier. Sing along with the choir as your favorite Christmas songs are performed in unison with a dazzling light display on Argosy ships and the boats of fellow Christmas enthusiasts. The Edmonds Fishing Pier is always bursting with holiday merriment for this event which encompasses the wonderful waterfront setting of our city. Whether its art or food, music or holiday festivities the city of Edmonds has something to offer for everyone. Come visit us and create your own memories in this historic and happy city. Edmonds is the oldest incorporated city in Snohomish County. Logger George Brackett founded Edmonds in 1890, naming the city either for Vermont Sen. George Franklin Edmunds or in association with the nearby Point Edmund, named by Charles Wilkes in 1841 and later changed to Point Edwards. Brackett came to the future site of Edmonds while paddling a canoe north of Seattle, searching for timber. When a gust of wind hit his canoe, Brackett beached in a location later called "Brackett's Landing." The town was named Edmonds in 1884, but was not incorporated until 1890 as an official "village fourth class" of Snohomish County. In that same year, Brackett sold 455 acres to the Minneapolis Realty and Investment Company. The town was plotted and a wharf was added along the waterfront. Modest houses and commercial structures sprouted up with a row of shingle mills dominating the cityscape.

othell will certainly fill up your calendar if you're looking for something special to do this fall and winter. A stroll down Bothell's Historic Main Street is always a fun afternoon, especially if you love antiques. From fine dining to quaint cafes, designer brands to handcrafted one-of-a-kinds, Bothell's charm certainly reflects the fabric of this community. "Although Bothell is growing, it has retained its sense of community through events such as Senior Day. It is truly a joy to see the businesses and residents come together to celebrate our community." said Brittany Caldwell, director of operations for the Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce. Senior Day, on Sept. 10, is an annual event dedicated to honoring the seniors that have built the community into what it is today. Along Main Street there will be interactive vendor booths, bingo, and live music. There will be giveaways, prizes, discounts and more for the whole family. Take a trip into Bothell's past thanks to photos and walking tours from the Bothell Historical Society, and see what future remodel plans the city has for the downtown area. The Chamber of Commerce will host another Vintage Bothell Wine Walk on Sept. 20. This is a great opportunity to enjoy wines from the region. You can purchase a ticket in advance for $20 or at the event for $25, while they last. Bring your own glass and you'll receive 10 tasting tickets at check-in. You'll enjoy approximately 15 different wines from Washington state wineries. Some vendors are partnered with local restaurants to offer tasty appetizers as well. lage. Located just one mile south of exit 26 off I-405, this nostalgic little village will have you thinking you've stepped into the past. Country Village hosts festivities and entertainment throughout the year. The Bothell Farmer's Market Fresh Friday offers produce, flowers, teas, pastas, soaps, oils, breads and so much more from local growers and crafters. It's open noon to 6 p.m., through Oct. 4. Autumn is a very special time at the Country Village; the smell of freshly made caramel corn fills the air as the chickens and ducks greet patrons. Yes, the Harvest Festival is here. On Oct. 12-13 you'll be able to enjoy a family day filled with cornstalks, pumpkins, craft booths, food, live entertainment, pony and train rides, and a beer and wine garden for the adults. The Country Village will also host its annual Safe Halloween, Oct. 31. Participating shops will be handing out treats (while supplies last) to all the little ghouls, ghosts and witches. You won't want to miss seeing Santa fly in on his sleigh on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. The Country Village will be decorated with thousands of lights and animated displays, the perfect setting for the traditional tree lighting which will follow Santa's arrival. Cookies with Mrs. Claus will be on Dec. 14-15, where kids love getting cookies and parents love collecting annual cookie recipes. Round out the year at "Fun with Frosty" on Dec. 21-22, from noon to 3 p.m. The kids can meet Frosty, enjoy a magic show, crafts and participate in fun and games. The Native American tribe known as the Sammamish were the original inhabitants of the region. The Puget Sound War in 1856 forced them to relocate. European settlements grew up in this region with the arrival of Columbus S. Greenleaf and George R. Wilson in 1870. Gradually a store, a school, and a sawmill were built in this area. George Brackett, one of the settlers, sold 80 acres of land to David Bothell in 1885. The first postmaster, who had purchased land from Bothell, decided to name the town after him. Logging remained the primary industry until the early 20th century. Bothell was incorporated on April 14, 1909. Post World War II, development speeded up in Bothell. Source: citytowninfo.com

Lynnwood is certainly known for being a retail hub in the North Sound area. It's ideally located at the convergence of Interstates 5 and 405, bringing a high volume of traffic that Lynnwood retailers love to see. If photography is your passion or even just a hobby, take a walk down one of Lynnwood's nature trails and you'll be enveloped by a canopy of autumn colors. Nothing to do on a Friday night? Head on over to the corner of 196th Street and 44th Avenue W. in Lynnwood where the cars are the stars. Folks from Lynnwood and all over the North Sound 14
area gather to show off their cars, chrome and new paint — weather permitting of course. Locals and car owners have dubbed this event "Lynnwood Friday Night Car Cruise In." It begins around 5 p.m. and ends at dusk, or when the car owners decide to head home. This car extravaganza has been going on for several years, and anywhere from 30-60 classic and new cars can be seen on display. What started as an impromptu gathering of car lovers, has now become something of a tradition. And though this is not an "official" event, that number certainly rivals with many "official" car shows. When cabin fever starts to set in this winter, consider the Lynnwood Recreation Center. It is a year-round facility that offers fun for the entire family. This recently remodeled indoor/outdoor facility offers a pool, water slides, lazy river, water playground and family hot tub. There's a cardio/weight room and fitness studio as well as lockers and private family changing rooms. he beautiful Sammamish River Valley, just 30 miles north of Seattle, is where you will find Woodinville, home to nearly 100 wineries. Fall is a wonderful time to visit Woodinville and its wineries because this is Harvest Season — when the wineries are in full production mode. Though the term "harvest" may conjure up images of pumpkins, gourds, corn mazes and scarecrows — we are talking about grapes, and lots of them. Harvest in Woodinville begins early September and runs through November. There are many Winery Crush Activities that can be enjoyed by not only wine connoisseurs, but anyone interested in wine production. There will be cleaning out of the barrels, sorting and bottling to name a few. This is also the time when new wines are being released so it is a superb time for wine tasting. Chateau Ste. Michelle will be wrapping up its Summer Con20
cert Series, but not before hosting live performances by One Republic and Sarah Bareilles on Sept. 2. You can enjoy big names in performers in an intimate venue. Some might argue that wine pairs best with music. As autumn makes way for colder weather and possible snowfall, the community starts to gear up for "Winter in Woodinville." "Winter in Woodinville" will be a three-day event that kicks off with Nick's at Night on Dec. 6. Nick's at Night is an evening event with more than 40 wineries showcasing their wines with tasty hors d'oeuvres. The events continue Dec. 7-8 with the annual St. Nick's Winery Open Houses. More than 35 decorated wineries open their doors to continue the holiday festivities and wine tasting. The Wine Walk also continues through all four seasons; it is the first and third Thursday of each month. Quick History: Prior to Anglo-American settlement, the Woodinville area was inhabited by the native Sammamish people. In 1871, Ira Woodin and his wife Susan moved from Seattle and traveled up the Sammamish River to build a cabin, log timber and farm cattle. A town gradually built up around the cabin, which served as its first school and Post Office, with Susan Woodin as Postmaster. Woodin and his son-in-law Thomas Sanders set up the first general store. Like other nearby towns, Woodinville began as a logging community, became a farming center in the early decades of the 20th century, and developed into a suburb of Seattle after World War II. In 1969, rock bands including Led Zeppelin and The Guess Who performed at the Seattle Pop Festival at Woodinville's Gold Creek Park. City Info Woodinville's unique character is brought to life with its upsurge as a unique winery destination. Woodinville has nearly half of all wineries northeast of Seattle. Many of Woodinville's 50 wineries offer tastings, winemaker dinners, wine clubs and special events. Just after the bustle of the back-to-school season comes to a close, the Historic Everett Home Tour will is the perfect weekend event for those looking to relax and enjoy the centuries-old buildings that the waterfront city has to offer. On Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. attendees can take a look behind the doors of Everett’s most treasured historic homes, while learning a little about how to fix up their own abode. Marysville makes merry for its seasonal holidays The Marysville community is offering area residents and out-oftown visitors alike opportunities to get acquainted with their historic downtown, as well as their parks and recreational services, from the fall through the winter. The Marysville Arts Coalition and the Downtown Marysville Merchants Association are sponsoring two Art Walks this fall in downtown Marysville, on the Thursdays of Sept. 12 and Oct. 10 from 5:30-8 p.m. Historic Third Street and its surrounding environs will host local artisans and give visitors an opportunity to check out an assortment of art, from watercolors and acrylics to textiles and sculpture. The afterhours event also introduces attendees to the businesses of Marysville's historic downtown. The city of Marysville will put kids in the drivers' seats of Marysville's biggest heavy-duty rigs during the annual Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Asbery Field, located at 1605 Seventh St. NE. Admission will be free for children of all ages to have a hands-on chance to honk the horns, set off the sirens and kick the tires on a variety of big rigs, including a dump truck, a vactor truck, police vehicles, a street sweeper, fire engines, garbage trucks, an aid car and more. Arlington brings small-town feel to its holiday celebrations The city of Arlington's main street and airport are always busy with activities, for locals and newcomers alike, each fall and winter. The Arlington Municipal Airport is set to host the 10th annual Arlington Drag Strip Reunion and Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and event organizers look forward to welcoming hundreds of classic cars, vintage and current drag cars, show cars and street rods. Quick history: Burlington initially grew out of a small logging camp built in the 1880s to become a farming and milling center for Skagit County. Located on the Great Northern railway line, the city developed into a “hub” for the region’s agricultural interests, and today, residents and city leaders retain this element by calling their home the "Hub City.” Major employers: Burlington-Edison School District, Regence Blueshield (health insurance), Pacific Woodtech Corp. (wood products) and Hexcel Corp. (aerospace and industrial composites). Small-town living: Burlington keeps many qualities of its traditional, small-town life. But a growing retail sector with prime real estate along Interstate 5 — the city features the Cascade Mall, the Outlet Shoppes and large grocery retailers such as Costco and Fred Meyer — means that on any given day, the number of people in Burlington balloon to five or six times its official population. Still, in other areas city leaders hold fast to their roots, and buildings in Burlington’s historic downtown district appear much the same as they did nearly one century ago.

Sugar Cookies! 1 1/2 cup(s) (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup(s) sugar 1 large egg 2 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract 4 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon(s) salt Directions In a bowl, with mixer on medium, beat butter and sugar until fluffy; beat in egg and vanilla extract. On low, beat in flour and salt. Divide dough in half; shape each half into a 1/2-inch-thick disk. Wrap in plastic wrap; chill until firm. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. On floured surface, roll dough 1/8-inch thick; cut into shapes. Transfer to ungreased baking sheet(s). Bake until lightly golden around the edges, 10 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes on sheets; transfer to racks to cool. Decorate as desired; store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks, or freeze, undecorated, up to 3 months.

Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism ambassadors, volunteers and staff are asked a myriad of questions every day Visitors seek recommendations for places to stay, things to do, restaurant choices, event information, and much more. Two of the most common requests are almost identical: Where can I hike, bike or walk with a view? And can you recommend a nice scenic drive? Whether the mode of transportation is two feet, two wheels or four wheels (or an even less common conveyance) visitors consistently want to surround themselves in our scenic splendor. Whatcom County boasts hundreds of miles of trails, offering diverse urban and rural environments that include expansive mountain and valley views, cozy forested paths, waterside vistas, parks and playgrounds. We also proudly refer travelers to our two State designated scenic drives — the Mt. Baker Scenic Byway and Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway. The Mt. Baker Scenic Byway encompasses the 58 miles between Bellingham and Artist Point along State Route 542. The route meanders through pastoral farmlands and a succession of charming towns with peak-a-boo views of Mt. Baker and the Nooksack River. A gradual climb in elevation through cedar forests will transition quite noticeably as you ascend the Mt. Baker foothills until the dramatic “reveal” of spectacular Mt. Shuksan, Picture Lake and the surrounding craggy peaks of the North Cascades. The final leg of your journey takes you through a series of switch backs to Artist Point, open only in the summer when adequate snow melt permits the plowing of the road. Here, at last, you can bask in the 40
shadow of Mt. Baker, the northernmost peak of the Cascade volcanoes. With the right timing and standing in just the right spot — with the merest swivel of your head, you can catch the sun’s waning rays reflecting off Mt. Shuksan before setting beyond Mt. Baker. The Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway follows the 21 miles along State Route 11 between the Historic Fairhaven District of Bellingham and the Skagit Valley. The dramatic cliff side highway weaves its way through a narrow passage carved into the Chuckanut Mountains. Between the geology of the sandstone cliffs and the spectacular water views, it’s hard to know where to look. We recommend keeping your eyes focused on the curvy road (the driver at least) and taking advantage of the many pull outs and parking areas to soak in the views. Along the way, you’ll pass Larrabee State Park — a beachfront park featuring fascinating rock formations creating tide pools teaming with tiny sea life. Larrabee, created in 1923, holds the distinction of being Washington State’s first State Park. The shallow, protected waters of Chuckanut Bay provide prime breeding grounds for oysters, geoduck, and other shellfish. Although most of the beds are restricted to commercial use, there are numerous restaurants and outlets along the way offering seafood that may have been harvested just minutes earlier. Washington State was one of the first states in the country to establish a system of scenic Highways, which reflect the depth of its scenic, cultural and historic landscapes. Of the 27 designated State scenic byways, two are in Whatcom County, and three more are immediately adjacent, including the North Cascades Scenic Byway along Highway 2. North Sound Living Given the abundance of travel routes linked by water, the definition of “Byway” was recently expanded to include marine highways as well, opening the door to the creation of the Whidbey Island Scenic Byway and the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway. One of the worlds most familiar and renowned Marine Highways, the Alaska Marine Highway, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Bellingham serves as the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway System, and will be a participant in a half century celebration in mid-September. Quick history: The city of Bellingham was incorporated in 1904 through a consolidation of four neighboring towns: Fairhaven, Sehome, Whatcom and Bellingham. Once a rough-and-tumble port town and a center for coal mining and logging, Bellingham has grown into a coastal city renowned for its historic character, its abundance of recreational activity, and as the home of Western Washington University. Major employers: PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, Western Washington University and Bellingham School District. The BP Cherry Point Refinery, located just north of Bellingham in Blaine, Wash., is also a significant job provider for the region. Small-town living: In recent years, Bellingham has gained acclaim as a popular home for retirees and also as one of Washington’s best small communities in which to start a business. The city retains a historic feel through its neighborhoods and urban villages, each with distinct characteristics. Community members are invited to sail aboard The Coot every week for a “Free Friday Ferry Farewell,” to see the Alaskan ferry off on it’s voyage northward. The Coot (photo attached) is a traditional wooden sailboat built in 1979 and restored in 2013 by the students of the Home Port Learning Center. Lifejackets are provided, but sailors are encouraged to bring snacks, water, and weather appropriate clothes. Each public sail is lead by a qualified volunteer skipper, and donations of $5 – $20 per person are appreciated and help support the Boating Center’s programs. Free Friday Ferry Farewells will depart from the Community Boating Center at 5:30 p.m. and return by 7:30 p.m., weather permitting. The Coot can carry a maximum of 5 adult passengers, or a safe combination of adults and children. Starting at 11 a.m. every Friday the Boating Center will accept phone and walk-in reservations for that evening’s public sail.
