Island agriculture and arts culture collided last Saturday, when a bustling morning scene at the Farmers Market was suddenly interrupted by the strains of a German operetta. The opera flash mob was orchestrated by Vashon Opera, which is gearing up to kick off its fifth season with a production of Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” on Sept. 20 and 22 at the Vashon High School theater. The cast of “Die Fledermaus” will include a slate of professional singers from Seattle as well as Portland, with islanders in supporting and non-singing roles and filling a 45-member chorus. Jennifer Krikawa, who heads the Vashon Opera with her husband Andy, said the show should appeal to opera fans and skeptics alike. Though written in German, “Die Fledermaus” will be sung in English, and as a comic operetta, it includes spoken acting along with singing and is full of humor. “An operetta sort of crosses a little bit into the musical theater side,” Krikawa said. “I think it’s really accessible to a person who’s not quite sure about the seriousness of opera.” The show climaxes with a rollicking party in Vienna, where more islanders will play a role. Singer Kevin Joyce, magician Tom Pruiksma, a troupe of ballerinas and local aerial artists will all act as entertainers at the lavish Viennese ball. “Every opera company gets to put in its own little thing,” Krikawa said. In all, about 130 islanders have a hand in the show, either on stage or behind the scenes, and most are volunteers. On Saturday, Krikawa, Portland singer Wesley Morgan, who will play Eisenstein, and Andy Krikawa (top photo) belted out “The Champaign Song” and were joined by about 25 chorus members who startled many when they began to sing from the middle of the market crowd (bottom photo). The Vashon Park District, faced with financial difficulties and accusations of mismanagement in recent years, must now pay nearly $25,000 to the state in unpaid sales tax and interest. Park district General Manager Elaine Ott delivered the news at a park board meeting last week after she received the final audit report from the state Department of Revenue. The audit, which spanned 2009 to 2012, found that for more than a year, the district failed to pay sales tax for its vacation rentals at Fern Cove and Point Robinson, according to district accountant Marie Browne. State auditors also found that the district did not pay the required tax on rental equipment and merchandise

the district sold during that time. Ninety-four percent of the unpaid taxes were from the district’s lodging facilities, Ott said at the meeting, and the two additional categories make up the remainder. In all, state auditors found that the district should have paid $1,190 in business and operations tax and $21,724 in sales tax on $252,606 of taxable income. With an additional $1,403 in interest, the final bill the district must pay is $24,317, Ott said. Through a payment plan with the state, the district will pay monthly installments of $3,500 for seven months. While the situation far from ideal, Ott said, the district can manage the bill. “We can pay it. We’re doing OK,” Ott said. Staff who worked at the district during SEE TAXES, 12

When a couple from Indiana recently saw Vashon’s bike in the tree featured on a television program, the pair — travelers and history buffs with a special affinity for the 1950s — decided they’d see it next time they were in Seattle. Last month the couple not only visited the bike in the tree, but also stayed a few nights at the childhood home of the boy behind the legendary bike. One of them left a five-star review of the rental house online, saying it felt like “a family’s home” and “not just another vacation rental.” Indeed, The Bicycle in the Tree House, a new seasonal rental, seems to have come straight out of 1954, the year 8-year-old Don Puz left his now-famed bicycle in the woods off of

A dispute over wages for Vashon’s school bus drivers will not lead to a strike any time soon, said Jason Powell, the business agent for the drivers’ union. Powell said First Student, the company that provides Vashon’s school bus service, agreed to continue negotiating with the Teamsters Local Union No. 763 after the bus drivers handed out pamphlets last week in Vashon town reading “Labor dispute could impact student transportation.” The groups are scheduled to continue negotiations in late September. “I think that it’s the right thing for (First Student) to do,” Powell said. “I’ll reserve judgement until we reach an agreement on what they have to say and if they’re willing to address our core concerns.” After previously giving the Teamsters union what First Student officials said was their last and final contract offer, 11 of Vashon’s approximately 15 substitute and regular bus drivers handed out hundreds of fliers in Vashon town on

Monday, Aug. 26. The fliers asked islanders to call First Student and request that the company negotiate a fair wage for the island drivers. According to Powell, the drivers believe their wages are not equal to those of First Student drivers in other parts of the state. They also claim there are wage inequities among the Vashon drivers themselves and that First Student has stalled negotiations for months and withheld public information concerning wages in other areas. Powell said some of Vashon’s drivers, who all live on the island, wanted to strike, but he encouraged them to hold off. A strike, which would require a “yes” vote by more than 50 percent of the group, is still possible in the future, he said, but not before the Sept. 23 bargaining date. “The drivers have a commitment to the community, and a labor dispute is only going to be because they have no other choice,” he said. — Natalie Johnson

Police return items taken in burglaries Still no arrest in string of thefts By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

After a string of residential burglaries on Vashon, about 10 islanders reclaimed their stolen items at a recent open house run by the King County Sheriff’s Office. Officials from the sheriff’s office declined to give information on the investigation or any suspects in the burglaries, but said the investigation is still in progress and they continue to hope to make an arrest. Det. Debby Schmitz came to the island three days last week with a variety of stolen items that had been recovered off-island, including at local pawn shops. Over the course of three days, roughly 20 people came by the sheriff’s office substation at Courthouse Square, hoping to find items that belonged to them, said Sgt. Cindi West, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. People

reclaimed items ranging from heirloom jewelry to chainsaws, though additional jewelry, tools and a guitar went unclaimed, Schmitz said. Marie Pottinger, who lost 10 pieces of jewelry in a burglary at her home, said she was at the substation early on the first day and had plenty of company. “When I came in, there were four women standing there,” she said. “By the time I left, another three had come in.” Only two women from that group were lucky enough to find any of their items, she said, and she was one of them. Of the many pieces of jewelry stolen from her home, she got back the least expensive and the most expensive pieces: a tennis bracelet she bought for herself years ago and a gold bracelet she bought secondhand. Islander Kirsten Frandsen also had good luck last week and again has her great grandmother’s wedding band in her possession. “I was so thrilled,” she

A few years ago she noticed some special jewelry pieces missing, and though she said she doubted it at the time, she thought she might have misplaced them. A few months ago, she noticed more pieces missing — her great grandmother’s art-deco wedding band and an engagement ring. When she read the news accounts in The Beachcomber of several women on the island with nearly identical stories, she filed a police report. The officer who responded confirmed that she had likely been robbed twice, she said. “I was pretty upset and angry,” she added. While she knew an investigation was under way, she said she had given up thinking she would get anything back, and she expressed gratitude for the sheriff’s office and Schmitz in particular. Pottinger also expressed gratitude to Schmitz. Her gold bracelet is unusual and difficult to describe, she said, yet Schmitz had been able to tell it might be hers. West, the sheriff’s office spokeswoman, added that if people think that their office may have their property because of a theft, they can call Schmitz at 296-3320. West added that once this case is closed, more information will be released.

Chautauqua Elementary School’s new vice principal, with 23 years of experience in the education field and multiple credentials, says she is pleased to be on Vashon and is looking forward to the school year. “For me, it’s about making sure every kid has the opportunity to learn what they need to learn,” she said. Theressa Prather, 49, came to the district from Gig Harbor, where she taught second, third and fourth grades at Artondale Elementary School before becoming licensed as an administrator. Along the way, she also earned her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and became a national board certified teacher for the elementary and middle school years. But, she said, she knew more was in store for her. “I’d always known I wanted to go into administration,” she said. Two years ago, she said, she began an education administration program at Western Washington University, which she completed, along with a one-year internship, in June. Serving in her new role will allow her to reach more children, she said, not just the 25 or 30 in her own classroom. “I want to help create a culture and a climate where everyone involved does what’s best for all kids,” she said. The district eliminated the part-time vice principal posi-

Soltman also spoke to Prather’s strengths, including her many years in the classroom, experience with the discipline system at the school and considerable skills with data analysis and instructional studies and intervention. “There were a lot of skills that fit for us,” he said. In her new role, Prather said she expects to be involved in education in a range of ways, from helping students who need guidance and practice with positive behaviors to assisting with the state’s new academic assessment law, which calls for more rigorous and regular assessments of teachers. While this law has caused concern for some, she said it is not meant to be punitive, but rather is intended to give all teachers, including the most distinguished instructors, the chance to be the best they can be. As the year gets under way, she also hopes to improve communication with families and, when there is difficulty, create a team that includes the teacher, child and parent. “I want to support any part of that wheel that needs to be shored up,” she said. Prather began in her new position in July and is impressed so far with her district colleagues and their dedication. “Everyone cares passionately for the kids that are here,” she said.

Local farmers don’t oppose variety of options

School bus drivers’ wage concerns seem valid When we heard last week that school bus drivers were handing out fliers outside Thriftway, we thought at first that they must have been holding some sort of fundraiser. We were surprised to learn that this normally quiet group of islanders was upset over its contract negotiations. If Vashon’s school bus drivers and their union representative are to be believed, the 15 or so drivers, all of them islanders, make less than their counterparts around the state. Vashon drivers work for First Student, the largest school bus provider in the country and the one that holds the Vashon School District’s contract for school bus service. Despite living and working in a community with a high cost of living, the drivers’ pay, they say, is lower than the average for First Student drivers who work in other school districts. On Vashon, bus drivers currently start at about $11 per hour and can earn up to $13.45. In Seattle, drivers also employed by First Student start at $13 per hour — near the rate Vashon tops out at — and can earn up to $19.10, more than $5 an hour more than the top Vashon wage. On Vashon, there is also a small group of drivers that was grandfathered in under an old pay scale and earns the top wage of $16.40 per hour. While that pay seems reasonable, island drivers are now asking that all of them be given the chance to top out at $16.40 after several years on the job, a move they say would also put their pay scale more in line with that of other First Student drivers around the state. First Student, however, suggested it wouldn’t budge on that front. We know that the issue of bus drivers’ wages isn’t simple and wages depend in part on what funding First Student receives from each district that it contracts with. Vashon’s school district already subsidizes transportation by about $80,000 a year and we believe they would be hard pressed to offer more. It would be helpful to know how Vashon’s school bus funding and its contract with First Student compare with other districts such as Seattle, but according to the Vashon drivers’ union, First Student has refused to provide that information. The company hasn’t replied to our requests for comment, and likely couldn’t comment on current negotiations anyway, so there may be a side to this story we simply haven’t heard. But what the bus drivers are asking for sounds reasonable on its face— to be paid equally to their counterparts around the state. Our school bus drivers have important jobs and hold children’s safety in their hands every school day. Their cost of living on Vashon is just as high, if not higher, than it is in other parts of the state. It’s in the community’s interest to keep strong employees in the drivers’ seats. We’re glad First Student agreed to keep negotiating, and we’re glad the drivers haven’t resorted to a strike. We hope the parties can come to an agreement that’s fair for the drivers and financially viable for the company. And if they can’t, we hope that when First Student’s contract is up for renewal by the district, school officials examine whether another company might offer Vashon a better deal.

I have wanted to write an editorial about the Vashon Farmers Market for a long time. With the latest flurry of letters, the time is now. Many people feel allegiance to us at the Farmers Market, or to Bernie at East West Produce, as two recent letters reflect, and I would like to challenge that tendency. People should check out what we have to offer and shop from us, or Bernie O’Malley, or Jason Parr’s roadside stand, or Thriftway or IGA, because they find what they are looking for. We want you to come to the Farmers Market because we are good at what we do. Each of us has something different to offer, so let me talk about what we (the farmers and crafters) at the Farmers Market have that you won’t find at any of the other places. I am going to respond to several points made last week in the letter to the editor “Produce stand helps town celebrate small farms,” by John and Clare van Amerongen. They raise questions about the Farmers Market that are out there, and the answers give me a chance to tell you why we are unique not just to the island, but to the whole Seattle area. Clare and John asked why the Farmers Market doesn’t open earlier if we are concerned about losing business to East West Produce. All the growers at the market are on-island. Other farmers markets consist of small family farms and of big farms that send out 10 to 50 trucks a week to all the regional farmers markets, some organic and some not. This allows industrialscale farms access to the direct retail market. This is an element that has crept into local farmers markets as the small farm movement has grown across the country. In the Seattle markets, many of the

FARMERS MARKET By CELINA YARKIN small farms and all of the large farms have to travel long distances to access the markets. Here, all the produce comes from within a 5-mile radius. So that begs the question that Clare and John asked: Why doesn’t the farmers market open until 10 a.m.? We have debated opening earlier, but have always chosen to open at 10 so that we have time to pick things like head lettuce and berries that don’t like to be stored even overnight. Shoppers at the Vashon Farmers Market get freshness that can only be rivaled by a kitchen garden. Even other farmers markets can’t boast that! The farmers do get up at dawn to pick. We are not snoozing. If we ever choose to open earlier, it will mean shifting some of our harvest to the day before. And why can’t the Vashon Farmers Market be open two or three days running like East West Produce? This question was also raised last week in the van Amerongens’ letter. The reason is because we harvest everything on Friday to bring to market Saturday. During the peak season we begin harvest at 7:30 a.m. Friday and sometimes don’t quit till 8 or 9 p.m. The plants aren’t ready for another market harvest until mid-week, which is when most of us are filling CSA shares and loading our farm stands. him to sell for a three-day run. It is also a belief of some that produce at the farmers market is priced too high. I invite everyone to come to the market and price shop to bust that myth. The market has a range of pricing, some high based on the crop and the farmer, and some at great deals, so check it out. One more difference that distinguishes what we offer from venues with larger farms is that we depend on diversity for our economic survival. This means that we do a lot of experimentation with varieties, so you will find produce at the market that you wont find anywhere else. It is a place to discover new flavors like squash blossoms, rare melons and unusual varieties of greens, eggplants, tomatoes, flowers, beans and squashes, to touch on just a few. And then there is the atmosphere, with good food, people, island-made crafts and music, with quieter times too at the beginning and end of each market. People should know that the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) is the home of 40-plus small businesses and is an economic engine of goods that are produced on this island by growers and crafters. VIGA’s gross annual income is approximately $300,000 per year, generated solely on Saturday mornings, and that is something to be proud of. We hope that everyone will take advantage of everything that is available on this island and enjoy the bounty and unique opportunity offered by each business. Let’s give this island a shot of unfettered politics and make our market places jump and jive!

I came away with the impression that these folks are really serious about their neighborhood PFACs, that it is not just a stunt. They really want to know what we think, but the agenda is chosen by the Franciscan team. Is that really a problem? Returning to the ERDs of the Catholic Church, remember that a senior executive â€” and a life-professed nun â€” lost her job and her community for going against the ERDs. The Catholic Church has made it clear that this is a â€œtake no prisonersâ€? issue. But take heart! Pope Francis I has shown extraordinary compassion and openness toward issues that, arguably, have not received that kind of attention from the church hierarchy. It would be wrong for Franciscan or anybody else to give us false hope that our voices can change these doctrines, but history tells us that it only takes one pope to change the world, John XXIII being the best modern example. Berry boycott

Support workers when grocery shopping Recently I learned of the plight of the farmworkers in Burlington, Wash., who pick the berries for Sakuma Brothers Berry Farms, also supplier for Driscoll Berries. These berries are sold at Thriftway on Vashon. Underpaid, deplorable living conditions, abusive local teens hired to supervise and unpaid women and teenage pickers, among other injustices, have been the impetus for several strikes that were ceased due to promises made by Sakuma to right the wrongs. The injustices have continued, causing the farmworkers to strike for a third time and call for a boycott of Sakuma Brothers berries. Farmworkers, many from Mexico and Central America, pick the bulk of food many of us eat. The hard labor involved is well known. In these times when large businesses profit beyond what most workers can ever hope for, it is a travesty that such work is denigrated.Â I ask any people of conscience to please honor the current boycott. In the memory of Caesar Chavez and many others who have struggled for the basic human rights of these laborers, may shoppers at Thriftway please honor this boycott. â€” Swaneagle Harijan

The brisk days of fall are upon us, signaling the end of summer, and with it the end of joyful vacation moments, including things like trying to get from the airline check-in counter to your actual boarding gate. Those of you who fly often may have grown immune to this type of frustration and can skip ahead to the next article about the bickering at the last meeting of the (pick one: fire department, school district, park district). But for those of you like me who prefer the train, the 10 air travel suggestions below may help you keep your sanity the next time you are foolish enough to book a flight. 1. In the security line, sandals are also shoes. Take them off. The soles could be used to hide more than three ounces of shampoo. 2. When you go through the body scanner, make sure your pockets are completely emptied. I had a tissue in my pocket, and the security guard stopped me and said, â€œSir, are you SURE you have emptied your pockets?â€? Iâ€™m guessing that tissues have been used in terror attempts known only to the TSA. I overheard one guard tell another that they nailed a guy the previous week with an entire box of Kleenex in his carry-on. 3. Do not try to take a road sign through security.

More than 60 people participated in the recent pink salmon derby to benefit the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness (IFCH). The event raised $550 for the nonprofit, which will use the funds for rental assistance for a family whose primary breadwinner needs to take some time off work to recover from an accident, according to Emma Amiad, the IFCH president. First place in the derby went to Toby Bauer, above, of Port Orchard. Bauerâ€™s salmon weighed in at 6 pounds, 10 ounces and netted him $345 in prize money. Organizer Gene Kuhns said nearly every participant went away with some kind of door prize.

‘The Painting’ plays Friday Vashon Film Society will screen the French film fable “The Painting” (“Le Tableau”) at 9:30 p.m. Friday. The movie depicts a kingdom within a painting where three castes live: The Alldunns are at the top of the social ladder, the incomplete Halfies are next in line and the barely outlined Sketchies are outcasts. Images reminiscent of Matisse and Chagall abound in this allegorical world created by writer/ director Francois Laguionie and a team of animators. The film is unrated but appropriate for older children, and tickets are only $7 for all ages. It’s part of the Film Society’s series of art films.

The Little House will have a show of work by Sarah Kassik, who transforms and embellishes furniture by painting it with Vashon historical scenes and other island images.

Art in the Alley (directly behind Spider’s Ski & Sports, in the former Ignition Gallery space) will present the work of Catalina Quinn — vibrant colors on canvasses that are inspired by Quinn’s ancestors from the remote canyons of Northern Mexico. Quinn, an islander, is the daughter of famed actor and artist Anthony Quinn and the granddaughter of Hollywood producer Cecil B. DeMille. Paul Colwell and friends will play music at the reception. Bergamot Studio in Burton will host a trio of events during the art walk and throughout the weekend. On Friday, the studio will exhibit the pastels of Leslie Wu; mixed media and collage by Deanne Belinoff, Don Cole, and Joan Wortis; paintings by Don Cole, Suzanne deCuir and Gretchen Hancock; monotypes by Mary Margaret Briggs and Brian Fisher; and photographic montage by Kassana Holden. Also on display will be pottery by Christine Beck, leatherware by Bill Cleaver and jewelry by Danielle Carbone. On Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., Robin Bridgman of JoeysCoat will host a trunk show at the studio, displaying couture-style coats for canines, tailored by islander Dana Lazare. On Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m., the studio will present furry friends in a JoeysCoat fashion show, followed by a dog treat tasting sponsored by the island business, RosieBones Whole Food Dog Treats. All well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend, and 10 percent of sales on Saturday and Sunday will be donated to theVashon Island Pet Protectors. Café Luna will display works by islander Spencer Sinner, who has been creating art since he was a child. An injury last May meant time off from Sinner’s job at LS Cedar and time for him to pick up a paint brush to create landscapes with varying layers, contrasts and values. The Hardware Store Restaurant will be the scene of “Feminine,” a show of works by islander Olivia Pendergast. Since 2009, Pendergast has been traveling to such locales as Haiti,

Nirvana will display paintings and sculpture by Bill Dilley, an islander who has mastered the arts of bronze casting, painting, rock carving and wood carving. He’s won awards for his art, including the People’s Choice Award and the Jurors’ Choice Award in the Mayor’s Art Show in Eugene, Ore. Raven’s Nest will display a new collection of wooden bangles adorned with Northwest Coast Native imagery and also spotlight an assortment of children’s books that explore Native designs and legends. A collection of rubber boots with Northwest Coast Native imagery are also new in the shop. VALISE Gallery will present “In Our Nature: New Works by Darwin Nordin and Kathryn Schipper.” Both artists are inspired by the beauty of the natural world. Working from his West Seattle studio, Nordin uses relief printing methods to create monoprints, layering impressions from multiple blocks to create each unique image. Schipper, an islander and VALISE member, creates pointillist drawings with pen and ink and colored pencils. Vashon Intuitive Arts will present a selection of watercolor paintings by islander Geri Peterson. Her work includes florals, local scenery and animal portraits.

Islanders can see works by Geri Peterson (top) and Catalina Quinn on the gallery cruise this Friday. Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Zambia, Malawi and cities and towns throughout the United States with a roll of paper under her arm. Particularly moved by the women she has met, she now has a huge library of photographic images of them from which she works. She has long been inspired by the work of painter Amedeo Modigliani and has been painting full-time for 13 years. In that time, her paintings have won national awards and been shown all over the world. Pendergast’s show will be arranged to include information about women’s organizations, groups and non-profits organizations on Vashon. Spotlighted organizations will include DoVE,

Working Mothers Revolution, Vashon Youth and Family Services’ mother/baby group, Threshold Choir, Vashonistas and others.

Vashon Allied Arts Gallery will be filled with work by dozens of local artists, set to be auctioned off at the organization’s annual gala on Sept. 27 and 28. Artists who have been specially commissioned to create works for the auction include Will Dacus, Betty Gardner, Debra Paulsen, Paula Allegrini, Rose Belknap and Leslie Wu.

Hastings Cone Gallery (next door to Snapdragon Café) will display the collage work of artist Kate Endle, who lives in West Seattle and Vashon with her husband, musician Chris Ballew. She has been a professional illustrator for more than 20 years. At the reception, DJ Michael Whitmore will spin LPs from his vast record collection.

The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum will open for the Gallery Cruise. “The 1885 Early Settlers” exhibit continues, and the UFO is on display in front of the museum.

Reggae master returns to Vashon for a show

Clinton Fearon is bringing his famed reggae band to town.

A crowd-pleasing band will return to Vashon at 9 p.m. Friday, when Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band plays a show at Red Bicycle Bistro. Fearon, who came of age in the late 1960s and 70s playing music in Kingston, Jamaica, was a founding member of the Gladiators, a legendary reggae band. He moved to Seattle in 1989 and quickly cofounded a band called The Defenders. In 1993, he founded his current band, and he has been wowing audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond ever since. Fearon plays bass, guitar and percussion, and also sings lead vocals and background harmonies. Tickets to the show are $10. The Red Bike has host-

ed several sold-out shows with Fearon in the past and anticipates the same for this one, so it is highly advised that concert-goers buy tickets in advance by calling 463-5959 or purchase them in person at the venue prior to the event. “If you like roots reggae, this is a show you won’t want to miss,” said Pete Welch, who organizes most of the musical acts for the Red Bicycle. “Clinton Fearon has quickly won the hearts of many an islander and will pack the dance floor with happy feet.” Welch, who is also the cofounder of Vashon Events, said Fearon is one of his favorite performers. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. After that, the venue is for ages 21 and older only.

Youth chorus forms, with a concert planned for the fall The Vashon Island Youth Chorus (VIYC), open to middle school and high school students, will begin meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Blue Heron Art Center. Rehearsals will run from 5 to 7 p.m. through Nov. 14, and students will prepare two concerts for the weekend of Nov. 16 and 17. The choir will be led by Vashon Allied Arts Youth Musical

Theater Director Marita Ericksen, who will also continue teaching her well-attended musical theater class for VAA. The major piece Ericksen’s choir students will perform in concert will be “Vivaldi’s Gloria for Young Voices,” accompanied by Gaye Detzer’s high school string ensemble, I Solisti, and a student oboist. Students who want to

improve their sight-reading skills and who like to sing in vocal ensembles should register at www.vashonalliedarts.org. Tuition for the class is $100 for VAA members and $110 for nonmembers. the period the audit covered have left the agency, and Browne said she does not know why such an oversight occurred. However, she said she speculates that staff then may have been confused about the difference between being exempt from having to pay federal tax as a government agency and having to pay state sales tax. She also said she believes that staff then did not purposefully commit the oversight. â€œNo taxes were collected, and none were paid,â€? she said. Previously, at the park district meeting, Ott had said she thought that some taxes had, in fact, been collected but not paid. That situation would have been

a warning flag of potential intentional wrongdoing, according to district treasurer David Hackett, who initially called for an internal audit to clarify what had transpired. However, later in the week, after reviewing the stateâ€™s documents with Browne, Ott said she concurred and that no taxes had been collected within the specified time frame. Hackett said he, too, is now satisfied that the costly mistake was not intentional. â€œI have no reason to believe otherwise,â€? he said. The auditâ€™s findings and final bill were a surprise to many who attended last weekâ€™s meeting and appeared taken aback. Joe Wubbold, the president of the Keepers of Point Robinson, who often serves as a contact person with the Coast Guard, expressed his surprise. â€œThis oneâ€™s a kicker,

actually,â€? Wubbold said. With two houses and a prime beach location, Point Robinson is the busier of the districtâ€™s two lodging facilities, and Ott will take a large percentage of what is due the state from the rentalsâ€™ proceeds, something that Wubbold said he does not quibble with in principle. However, he said, such a move will diminish Point Robinsonâ€™s earnings and at a time when repairs are needed. â€œMy sense is it will wipe out the profits for this year,â€? he said. The contract between the Coast Guard, which owns Point Robinson, and the park district, which manages it, stipulates that after park district costs are covered for the facilities, the rental proceeds are to go back to Point Robinson for its upkeep, Wubbold said. Last year, when the lighthouse roof needed to be repainted, Wubbold said he learned that the district had funneled Point Robinsonâ€™s proceeds into its general fund and no money was available for painting.

Now, he said, because of the lack of maintenance, water is leaking into the lighthouse and repairs need to be made. The district is currently getting bids for the repairs, Wubbold said, and while figures are not in yet, he is certain they will be more than the $8,000 it would have cost to repaint the roof last year and avoid the problem. For her part, Ott confirmed that bids are in the works for the lighthouse roof, both to repair and paint it and to replace it. She said she does not expect that the the tax bill to the state will get in the way of necessary work there, though she noted that is a board decision. Wubbold said he believes one of the most important questions at this juncture â€” which follows unexpected expenses at the districtâ€™s athletic fields project and considerable cost overruns there â€” is if the district knows of any other unexpected expenses pending. â€œIs there anything else out there lurking?â€? he said. â€œIf so, we need to take steps

A spokeswoman for the stateâ€™s Department of Revenue said no one there could legally comment on the districtâ€™s audit, but noted that government agencies are considered registered businesses and are as likely to be audited as a traditional businesses.

In 1954, a fast-burning blaze swept through the Puz family home near Tahlequah. Everyone in the family of seven was gone that evening but the children’s father, Anthony Puz, who perished in the blaze. Islanders, moved by the tragedy, responded in tender Vashon style, offering up clothes, furniture, financial support and a new bike for Don. But the bicycle wasn’t his favorite. It had hard, solid rubber tires “and skinny little handlebars like a tricycle,” he said. “I was too big a kid to ride it.” So one day, when he and his friends were playing in the woods, Don left his bike behind and headed home to where his family now lived — about 100 feet away. He never returned to fetch his bike. “I didn’t want it, and it disappeared, and I never gave it another thought,” Don said. After the bike was discovered in the woods behind Sound Food in the 1980s, making headlines and garnering attention,

both Don — who had a long career as a sheriff’s deputy on Vashon — and his mother Helen paid a visit. “As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one that had been given to us,” Don recalled. “It looked identical, except for it was in a tree.” The story of the bike has followed Don to Kennewick, Wash., where he now lives and still gets calls from reporters once in a while. The bike was featured on local news stations and a Japanese television show; Berkeley Breathed wrote a children’s book inspired by the bike, and a restaurant on Vashon is even named after it. Once, Don said, someone from the Today show called to inquire about interviewing him, but the time producers chose was during a Seahawks playoff game. Don, a fan of the Hawks, declined to be on the show. “They didn’t want to wait,” he said. And with the advent of the internet and social media, Don says, the bike has been gaining more attention. Photos of the bike have circulated

online, often accompanied by a false tale of a soldier leaving the bike behind before he left to fight in World War I. He and Bost are quick to point out that the bike is much too small for someone old enough to go to war, but Bost said she doesn’t mind the rumors. “I think it’s fun because it adds to the whole thing,” she said. Helen Puz, who raised her five children at the home near Center, became more well known for her avid gardening and volunteer work than her connection to the bike in the tree, and in 2002, she was named the Strawberry Festival Grand Marshal. She died at 99 years old last June, and there was a standing-room only memorial service at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bost said. While Helen never knew her home would become a rental, she always got a kick out of the bike, Bost said, and she thinks she would get a kick out of the Bicycle in the Tree House. “I think this would have pleased her a lot,” she said. “The whole idea is to

keep the sense of Helen Puz’s house.” Some of Bost’s siblings were skeptical about whether their old family home would attract renters, she said, but the place was booked nearly all summer long. As it turns out, Bost said, good vacation rentals are in high demand on Vashon in the summer. A long-term renter will occupy the place through next spring. “I didn’t need the publicity (of the bike),” she said. “All I needed was a nice house located in the center of Vashon.” On a wall in the house dedicated to the bike, photos of the bike over the years, newspaper articles and a an essay written by Bost now weave together what she calls the true story of the bike in the tree. While the Puz story seems to have quelled any other tales, its still unknown exactly the bike got up in the tree. Did Don stick it in a low-hanging branch without remembering, or did a prankster put it up there later? “Maybe that’s the only mystery left,” Bost said.
