A Sumner retirement community will hold an open house Sept. 27 to celebrate the 90th birthday of retired physician Dr. Patrick Duffy. Stafford Suites is seeking baby photos from anyone delivered by the doctor.

Duffy is believed to have delivered nearly 2,500 children during his 52 years of family practice in the city. Stafford is inviting the doctor’s friends and former patients to attend the celebration, which will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.

Police Blotter All persons in the police blotter are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

VEHICLE RECOVERY: On Aug. 18, an officer was dispatched to a suspicious vehicle on 206th Avenue East, later advised to have been reported stolen. The officer found it damaged and abandoned on a cul-de-sac and, after failing to reach the registered owner, had it impounded. SHOPLIFTING: At 3 p.m. Aug. 20, an officer was dispatched to a shoplifting incident at a state Route 410 retailer. The suspect had fled the scene in a car. Store loss prevention were alerted by an emergency exit alarm and located security video of a man exiting the door with a computer system. A copy of the video was

HIT AND RUN: On Aug. 21, a witness alerted police to a vehicle hit and run in an SR 410 parking lot. A sport utility vehicle attempted to back out of its parking stall and a rear door left ajar hit the adjacent unattended car. The driver briefly stepped out to look at the damage and subsequently fled the scene. An officer located the suspect vehicle at the registered owner’s address and, after taking a statement, cited the driver for hit and run unattended. The officer returned to the scene of the incident to provide necessary information to the victim. FRAUD: On Aug. 22, a citizen reported the fraudulent use of a store account by unknown persons. She discovered unauthorized transactions in excess of $600 at store locations in Federal Way and Auburn. The victim reported her wallet had been stolen

Sheriff’s Community Academy seeks applicants The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is looking for interested citizens to attend its fall Community Academy. The academy begins Sept. 26 and will meet each Thursday evening for 13 weeks. This is the first time a session will be held in north central Pierce County. Anyone may apply. This location will be most convenient for those living in central or north Pierce County, Edgewood, and Brown’s Point. The academy is an opportunity for participants to learn first-hand about law enforcement in Pierce County and to meet the sheriff and other department members. The course seeks to familiarize the public with all aspects of the sheriff’s department and provides insight into the practices of law enforcement and the

VEHICLE PROWL: On Aug. 23, a delivery driver reported a theft from his work vehicle that had occurred the day prior in an SR 410 parking lot. He had left the car and, upon returning 10 minutes later, discovered the door ajar and some personal and business items taken. The man was given a case number and advised to share the stolen items’ serial numbers if located. HEROIN: On Aug. 23, police responded to a shoplifting incident at an SR 410 retailer. During a search incident to arrest, an officer discovered a box containing heroin, pills, a scale and other paraphernalia that can be used for drug distribution. Following an interview with the suspect, he was taken to Pierce County Jail and booked for unlawful possession of a controlled substance

INTIMIDATION: On Aug. 24, a caller reported receiving a threatening text from a man in custody at Enumclaw Jail for an earlier domestic incident. He was believed to have sent the message while being allowed to retrieve phone numbers. The suspect had signed a temporary no-contact order during booking. An officer took custody of the suspect and transported him to Pierce County Jail for booking on felony cyber stalking and violation of a court order. FIREWORKS: At 9 p.m. Aug. 24, an officer responded to complaints of fireworks set off at a 195th Place East residence. In an interview, one of the complainants reported the fireworks were an ongoing problem. The officer responded to the suspect residence and observed a large display of fireworks going off from the water

side of the home. The homeowner was contacted and advised the fireworks were unlawful within city limits, except on approved holidays as outlined in the municipal code. A criminal citation for possession and use of dangerous fireworks was forwarded to the court for mailing. ROBBERY: On Aug. 26, police responded to a report of armed robbery, alleged to have taken place at Allan Yorke Park. The victim reported an unknown man walked up to him and demanded money at gunpoint; a friend said he had seen the man demand money or the items in the victim’s pockets. The victim reported the theft of his wallet, cell phone and cigarettes. They said the suspect left in a car driven by another person. Officers and a detective located the suspect vehicle parked in front of a Prairie Ridge residence and contacted the driver. The driver reported he had given the

suspect a ride to the park to locate a person — the victim — who owed him money for a recent personal sale; he had not seen the suspect with a gun. Police were directed to the suspect’s address, where he said he had met the victim about the money and accepted a cell phone as collateral. He denied having or implying that he had a gun, denied taking a wallet or cigarettes, and consented to a search of his room. The phone was recovered and the case was forwarded to the county prosecutor for review. MAIL THEFT: On Aug. 26, a 101st Street Court East resident reported the theft of mail from his locking mailbox. An officer advised him to monitor his bank accounts and credit reports, and provided a case number for further follow-up.

The challenge of a fit diabetic life

Hi, my name is Kris and I’m a Type 2 diabetic. For many years I wasn’t very good about taking care of myself — before and after my diagnosis in March 2002. Then this horrible week happened in June 2012. And to cope with it, I started walking my dog five days a week. This time last year I was able to walk about three miles in about an hour. When I decided to start walking, my friend Ilyse, who is a breast cancer survivor, challenged me to walk the Torchlight Run. I didn’t think Kris Hill I would be ready Maple Valleyfor it as the event Covington was a month out Reporter from that conversation. Instead, I walked the inaugural Bra Dash 5K, and she walked with me. By that point I decided I wanted to be a runner and when we walked at Lake Wilderness I told Ilyse I wanted her to run my first 5K with me, likely in December. Then I did something I never thought I would do in my life: I became a runner. Somewhere along the way on this journey I became an inspiration to others, particularly women, to start exercising. I don’t understand it. Honestly, I just started walking out of guilt and grief over the death of my first dog. I felt like I neglected her and our other dog. I started walking just to deal with it but then it became something else.

Fall means a time of new beginnings Fall is in the air. Back to school this week. The weather has been rainy and cooler. The leaves are changing. It’s fair time. It is a time of new beginnings. Football season. And the holidays are right around the corner. There are many positive aspects of the Bonney Lake plateau. One is Beautify Bonney Lake, which is in its 10th year. The event will take place on September 21 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Community volunteers, local businesses, and the Beautify Bonney Lake organization join forces to make permanent improvements to the city. The mission of Beautify Bonney Lake is to enhance the beauty of the city, by providing a vehicle to easily capture the goodwill of the citizens via their willingness to create permanent and positive improvements to the city. Why have I been involved all 10 years of the event? Besides to create a more beautiful city, meet my neighbors, and get a free lunch and T-shirt? I enjoy working outdoors. It is satisfying to see the transformation of a flower bed weeded, pruned and new bark. Or the anticipation of how that bag of 100 daffodil bulbs you just planted

mation visit: http://www.beautifybonneylake.org/ The following month, on October 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the second annual Milotte Film Festival will be held at the Justice & Municipal Center, 9002 Main Street East in Bonney Lake. Alfred and Elma Milotte were true pioneers in the motion picture industry. Through their work with Walt Disney and the True Life Adventure series between 1946 and 1954 they gave the world a view of nature that most people have never seen before and then they came to live in Bonney Lake. They retired to the home they built on the hilltop with panoramic views of the Cascades and Mt. Rainier, the Fennel Creek Valley, the Puyallup Valley, Commencement Bay and the Olympics. They never really retired, but became active in the community, were writers, artists, puppeteers, lecturers and tree farmers in addition to their photography. The agony of summer homework for kids and moms Oh the agony of summer homework! My daughters just hate having summer homework. They feel it interferes with their busy summer schedules: playing video games all night in the family room, hanging out in their rooms all day playing video games, watching whatever their latest movie obsession is over and over, and complaining to their friends on Skype about summer homework. I have mixed feelings about summer homework. When teachers assign students summer homework, they also assign the homework to the parents. In order to get the kids to do it, we have to bug them about it, remind them where we are in the summer so they plan ahead, and as it was this year, we may have to take them somewhere to complete the homework. I know a mom who refuses to let her kids do summer homework. Her reasoning is, “If the teachers are not contractually obligated to work during the summer, the students should not have to work either.” I asked my sister, who is a teacher, what she thought about it. She said, “Every place I’ve worked has given out summer homework. There is good research out there that shows that the long break is detrimental to memory.

“As a teacher, I don’t like the long break because kids do forget a lot. I also don’t like the sudden onslaught of grading that comes in right at the beginning of the school year when kids turn in their summer assignment. Do I think it is necessary, yes, and more so now in the age of electronics where kids are less likely to read all summer, or play outside, or work, or do chores, or be involved in true projects, or go to a camp or art class or something, or be busier than using computers and gaming equipment. “I’m not sure about the thinking that it cuts into family time because kids spend a lot of the summer laying around when the adults in the family are working and running lives. I always suggest that the students set up either a 45 minute window of time every day to get the summer work done or one portion of a day once a week to address it. “The question I always ask parents in matters like this is what they want for

their children and if they are willing to guide their children’s learning year around.” So with both positions filed in my head, I pulled on my best parenting pants and came to a conclusion of my own: “It won’t hurt you, do it anyway.” I even offered to be the parent to drive the kids around on a kind of city scavenger hunt assignment. It’s a class on human geography and they were assigned to find different unique places of history and infrastructures that binds us as a society. They had to have a picture of one of their team members in front of each place. It turned out to be a lot of fun. And we weren’t alone. As we pulled into a gated community and asked if we could take a picture, the attendant told us they’d had an onslaught of students doing the same thing all week. Even though we had fun doing this project with her friends, my daughter complained about the remainder of the homework packet and how the social studies teacher gave them fifty pages, while the English and science teacher had only given a couple. I tried to explain to her it probably wasn’t fifty pages of actual work, but just reading. She wouldn’t hear it;

the teacher was just mean. Then when she finished the remainder of the packet, she said, “Mom, you

really messed up way to develop portion control. I do not recommend it. But six months later I could only eat about half as much as I did before high school fall sports season started. One good thing came out of that bad series of decisions. But, I still ate a lot of crap. I love pizza. I love wings. I love pasta. I love chocolate. I really love chocolate. And Red Vines and doughnuts and pastries and cake and bread. Oh, and I like beer, not the cheap mass-produced domestic stuff. No. The expensive craft microbrews which have a ton of calories and carbs. I don’t drink much at one sit-

ting, one or two at a time, but that’s a lot of calories. At that time I probably ate out for lunch at least three times a week at Red Robin, Trapper’s Sushi, Applebee’s and the Rock, just to name a few of my favorite spots. I ate out fairly frequently on weekends, too. That had to change. At some point I decided I would eat out once a week for lunch at one of those favorite places, the rest of the time I would be much more careful about what I ate. I decided I would go out for dinner during over the weekend. I am lucky my husband likes to cook. And he is understanding. For five

to test my blood sugar regularly then adapt my dosages accordingly. I didn’t do that. I just went off the medication she wanted me to stop taking and just took the new one she gave me in July. Then I went back to the doctor in early October and everything looked good until the labs came back. My A1c, which is a measure of the average number of my blood sugar levels, was 8.8

percent. That was bad. Very, very bad — and I was upset. Somehow, that didn’t derail me. I was four months into a series of better habits and lifestyle changes. I kept going. This time, though, I started tracking my blood sugar levels. I got my numbers under control within a week and at that point I was a few weeks into the Couch to 5K running

When I signed up for the Bra Dash 5K I knew I had to train. I had to be serious. And as I trained, I started researching how to eat like someone training for an athletic event. I started out simply. I started cutting back on my carbohydrate intake. See, I lost about 15 pounds before this all started, but not in the best way. I’ll be honest. In the fall of 2011 when I started covering more fall sports, particularly football, I started skipping meals and my medications to manage my diabetes. It was a

plan, which lasts nine weeks. It’s worth noting that I get up and workout first thing in the morning. That’s when I have to do it. I make time for it. You can’t make excuses. That is the quickest way to sabotage yourself. Don’t do it. Don’t be your own worst enemy. The extra weight kept coming off, fat was replaced with muscle. I ran my first 5K Dec. 9. I decided to run five more by the end of June. In January, I saw my doctor again. My A1c was a beautiful 6 percent. I lost eight more pounds, inching my total fat loss to 38 pounds, I think. I was starting to put together the idea that exercise plus the right fuel and hydration for my body, which is a runner’s body, was the key to my success. That thinking like an athlete rather than focusing on weight loss and deprivation was the key. I kept running. I felt better all the time. I discovered that on days I ran I could eat a little bit more carbs and take a little bit less medication. I ran three days a week, so nine to 10 miles total, then in late December added a cross training workout so I was back to four days a week of exercise. During the next few months I started cutting out other things. I quit drinking diet Snapple iced tea. I quit drinking Vitamin Water Zero. I quit drinking anything other than one cup

of coffee with breakfast in the morning and water the rest of the day. The biggest victory was quitting soda. I weaned myself down to one small can of Coke Zero on weekends after my run on Saturday. A hectic weekend in mid-March led me to drink too much diet soda and it took me an entire week to recover. No more soda for me which is no small feat. My soda habit began when I was in middle school, more than 20 years ago, and it took me two years of effort to quit. Sometime in the past seven or eight months I decided to have at least one day a week where I don’t eat meat. I did this because I started reflecting on my eating habits and realized I was, at most, eating meat once a day and sometimes I would go two or three days straight without meat. My sister is a vegetarian, a vegan really but she likes chocolate and ice cream, so eating vegetarian dishes were a part of my life since I was 6 or 7 years old — she’s almost 12 years older than me and quit eating meat or consuming most animal products when she was 18, if I remember right. One thing I decided to do early on, if I remember right, is allowed myself a cheat day. Typically Saturdays I would eat whatever I wanted, especially at our lunch or dinner out as a family, which helped avert the feeling of deprivation though that’s not really an issue because this is all

about thinking of myself as an athlete so I fuel and hydrate accordingly. That means I don’t eat most fast food. Once a month I may eat at Ivar’s or Taco Time. But their ingredients are better and a few pieces of fish with coleslaw on the side is considerably healthier than anything you could get at one of the big national chains no matter what they may say is in their healthier or low-calorie options. As I get deeper into this running journey I have also started eating more organic foods. I don’t like every organic food I eat and doing an all-organic diet is challenging but I figure the fewer chemicals I put into my body the better. This is a choice I made for me. I won’t judge you if you don’t shop exclusively at Whole Foods. I sure don’t. Not everything in my shopping cart is organic. But, I try. At my last appointment with my doctor in early June I was down 46 pounds from my highest weight at the end of my pregnancy. I had just run my sixth 5K a few days earlier. I was eating

four or five small meals a day. At that point I lost eight inches off my chest, 13 inches off my waist and another eight inches off my hips. My A1c was 5.9 percent. When I met with Pam Kramer, a registered dietician and diabetes educator at MultiCare, a few weeks ago to talk about the Summers End Fun Run I caught her up on all I accomplished since October. She’s a runner. And she works with diabetics just like me. Kramer told me I needed to write about what running has done for me because other diabetics need to see my story. I am absolutely not here to pat myself on the back. I am not trying to inspire anyone. I am trying to add years to my life. I want to watch my daughter grow up and maybe have another baby. I want to be healthy. But I do want everyone to know, whether they are a type 2 diabetic like I am or not, they can get healthy. You have to decide to start when you know you can form those healthy habits. You have to accept it will take time. It will take work.

eating during the holidays will be a bit more pleasant! — and possibly run my first half marathon in early March. My goal is to get to a size eight. For years I was between a size 18 and 20. As I write this I am a size 12. I won’t weigh what I did when I graduated from high school but I will be able to fit into clothes from that period of my life. When I can wear my prom dress I will take a photo and post it to Facebook. In the years since I was diagnosed I always wondered how other type 2 diabetics were able to manage their health through diet and exercise. I thought I was just going to always take medications and always be heavy. Then I started walking which led to running which led to this domino effect of change. Never again will I be the diabetic who doesn’t take care of herself. I may have weak moments or tough days, but, all those collective bad habits are gone. I’m a type 2 diabetic who is in the best health and shape of her life. And it will only get better.

It will require patience. And it will require putting all the pieces together. Exercise or dietary changes alone will achieve some results but learning how to combine activity with the appropriate fuel and hydration will truly change your life. It changed mine. I’m a little more than a year into this journey to better health. The support I have from my husband, my friends, my family, this amazing community, blows my mind. I could not have accomplished any of it without that support. Something Steve Murray, pastor of Real Life Church, has told me is that people are attracted to a vision. If you have a vision, one that is positive, conversations will revolve around it and support will flock to it. That is what I found in my journey to become a runner. Panthers primed for the season kick off By Dennis Box and Daniel Nash The Panthers are running sprints and throwing deep as the boys get ready for the first hits of the 2013 prep football season. Last year Bonney Lake ended the 2012 season with a 2-3 conference record in the South Puget Sound League 3A. It was the second year the team ended with a 2-3 record and fell short of postseason. Coach Jason Silbaugh will be walking the sidelines for his second year. Previously he was a defensive coordinator for Lakes High School. Silbaugh said soon after taking his job with the Panthers that he hoped to balance the team’s offense and defense. Last season the Panthers ran the ball effectively in many of its games and had a stingy passing defense. These will be strengths the team will need to build upon as it heads into this season. The SPSL 3A is a competitive league with Enumclaw sending out an experienced squad that will be a good test for the Panthers Oct.

Bonney Lake will be looking for room to run this season. File photos 18. The Panthers will host school district rival Sumner Sept. 13. Sumner is in the SPSL 2A, but the game is always a test for bragging rights. Sumner had a winning season in 2013 and made the playoffs. Coach Keith Ross has a solid team that will stretch Bonney Lake vertically and on the line.

foliage. Surround the taller smoke tree with three to five dwarf barberry plants. You can also find Golden Spirit smoke trees with glistening gold leaves and use dark purple barberry plants for a color contrast in the same bed. Neither of these plants drink too much or demand extra attention. That’s what I call a marriage of convenience. For dry shade: Goldstrike Aucuba and Japanese Anemones The tall, delicate blooms

of autumn-blooming Japanese anemones come in shades of white, pink and purple and these perennial plants come back year after year even if grown in the dry shade of cedar and fir trees. School Board News School board meetings are open to the public and we encourage anyone to join us. At the August meeting, the board reviewed and approved the 2013-14 White River School District budget. They were also very pleased to award diplomas to three graduates of the White River High School class of 2013 who completed their requirements over the summer. At their next meeting on September 11, the board plans to swear in a new member of the board and will hear the results of MSP and HSPE testing from last spring.

As the superintendent of the White River School District, I think of the mission of ensuring high levels of learning for all students as fulfilling a sacred promise. Each morning parents literally hand over their children to us. In my experience, parents expect three things in return: 1) they want their children to be safe and secure while in our care; 2) they want them to feel special; and 3) they want them to learn—not simply to “be taught,” but to learn! We have the highest obligation to fulfill this promise, and everything we do in schools—every decision, every policy, every practice—should reflect this. What we do sends a much more significant message than what we say. As the White River School District sets out on a journey to ensure high levels of learning for all students, we must examine every practice, by asking, “Is this consistent with our core purpose of ensuring high levels of learning?” In this edition we wanted to share a portion of our work surrounding that sacred promise – The work of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a prevention framework for a school wide behavioral support system that provides students the level of support they need, when they need it. It includes all students at all times in all environments. It is NOT a specific program or curriculum, but a way of doing things that is positive, proactive and responsive. My commitment to doing the PBIS work is heightened by the fact that I have completed my first year as your superintendent. I cannot overstate how much I appreciate and honor the trust the White River community placed in me. I am extremely proud of our administrators and staff. Each and every one of our students is important to me, and I deeply appreciate our parents who entrust us with their children each day. We will work towards fulfilling that sacred promise to you.

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports?

PBIS is an example of a multi-tiered intervention system that uses a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviors from occuring. At the first tier, students learn three to five positive school-wide expectations that apply to everyone (see the example from Wilkeson). Students are explicitly taught these expectations and how they apply throughout the school (see Elk Ridge Matrix). They are the cornerstone for creating and maintaining a positive school climate and culture. Students are taught what to do, not given a long list of rules telling them what NOT to do. When students are meeting these expectations their effort is recognized and acknowledged to positively reinforce that behavior. When students are not meeting the expectations they are reminded and, if necessary, retaught. For most students, (80-90%) no further intervention is needed.

Why PBIS?

PBIS is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents. PBIS increases a school’s sense of safety and supports improved academic outcomes. More than 19,000 U.S. schools are implementing PBIS and saving countless instructional hours otherwise lost to discipline. PBIS is focused on continual teaching and learning. PBIS is positive using acknowledgement and recognition of good behavior to reduce unnecessary discipline and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety and learning. PBIS schools apply a multi-tiered approach to prevention and provides the level of support each student needs. PBIS uses disciplinary data and principles of behavior analysis to develop school-wide, targeted and individualized interventions. PBIS improves school cimate for all students and staff. PBIS SUPPORTS MORE STUDENTS LEARNING MORE!

But what about the other 10%-20% for whom the Tier 1 supports was not enough? It is here where the difference between PBIS and traditional forms of maintaining school discipline become apparent. In a traditional model, behavioral errors might lead to punishment. But in PBIS, it is first assumed that the student made an error that can be corrected. Like an error when a student is learning to do math we do not punish…we reteach. There is still a consequence, but it is a positive consequence based on respect for the individual. And, just like with academics, different individuals need different levels of support. For some a single reminder is sufficient. For some a daily check in/check out with an adult is needed to help them learn how to meet the expectations. This practice represents a Tier 2 level of intervention and support. Then, for a very small percentage of students, each task is broken down to its simplest parts, and each part is retaught and practiced. This highly individualized planning and support represents a Tier 3 intervention. The students are still expected to meet the school wide expectations just like any other student, but they are going to be provided the intensity of support they need to get there.

Check in/Check Out is a school based program designed to provide systematic and frequent reinforcement and encouragement for positive behaviors so that the student receives high rates of immediate feedback. With “Check In/Check Out” students are presented with daily/ weekly goals and then receive frequent feedback on meeting the goals throughout the day. The feedback system is connected to the school wide expectations.

In Every aspect of education, data driven decision making is critical. When faced with an issue we cannot guess and hope. We need to use data to identify causes and provide interventions and supports to immediately and accurarely address the problem. For PBIS, all schools in the White River School District have implemented the School Wide Information System (SWIS). This data system allows building teams to track office discipline referrals and use that data to gather information aobut who, where, when and why behavioral errors are occuring and then determine the best way to address the issue.

The Hornet Way At White River High School, we believe that students should be recognized for their positive contributions to our school and community. We ask students to reflect The Hornet Way regularly in their daily lives by showing Pride, Appreciation and Acceptance in everything they do. WRHS staff and students can recognize each other for displaying these attributes by filling out a Hornet Gram. Students will be recognized on a monthly basis for showing The Hornet Way. 863651
