T
he best church and schools FOR our community! That’s what we are committed to here at Gateway, and that is different than simply being the best church in the community. There is one word that describes what we do at Gateway, and that word is serve. Gateway seeks to serve our community, our region, and our world, and to do so by offering a message that allows people of all generations to experience life-giving hope and care. That message is a part of all we do at Gateway and at the core of what drives us. So, whether it’s sponsoring Gateway’s annual Operation Day of Hope (which provides free services and necessities for local families); building restrooms and school facilities in Africa; donating backpacks for local school students; or creating opportunities for young children, students, and adults, it’s all about people experiencing “life-giving hope and care.” You’ll hear us talk a lot about Gather, Grow, and Go. We “gather” together so we can “grow” together, and then serve—or “go”—together. So if you want to know what we’re inviting people to be a part of, that’s it: Gather, Grow, and Go. We are not the perfect church. Gateway’s church and schools are made up of people learning to live life together, and sometimes that gets messy because life can get a bit messy! But we have learned a “better together story,” and if you are not already part of another faith community, then I invite you to be a part of ours. When you walk through the doors of Gateway Fellowship, you will walk into a friendly environment devoted to making your experience exciting and meaningful regardless of your age. On Sundays, there are gatherings for the whole family that include several different worship styles. (Check out gatewayfellowship.com for more info.) All Sunday gatherings feature the same relevant message. Casual dress is the norm for all gatherings, even for those on the leadership and ministry teams. My favorite “Sunday best” is generally jeans and an open-collar shirt—and I live in my Chuck Taylors. After every gathering (about seventy minutes), my favorite time is “lobby time”—when I get to make new friends; so stop on by and introduce yourself! The following pages will tell you more about who we are, our commitment to you and your family, and how to connect with us. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about Gateway!

Gateway Kids “Fun, engaging, and genuine” are the three words Shelly Sundberg, Gateway’s children’s pastor, uses to describe Gateway Kids. “We want kids talking the whole way home about what happened in their group.” At Gateway Kids, the goal is to create an environment where kids are loved, cared for, and continually learning about God. Our leaders work hard to connect with the kids and build relationships with them. The oldest Gateway Kids volunteer is eighty, and youngest is ten, creating a multi-generational environment for kids to grow in. We work with people who love children and use their talents to make each class special. “Gateway Kids is a loving and safe environment where my kids learn about God in very creative and fun ways. My children, Gavin and Addy, love coming because the environment is so hands-on. They interact with great leaders who really care about them.” —Jaime Schmidt, parent and Gateway’s early childhood director

Gateway Students “Kids these days. . .” are capable of amazing things, and Gateway is excited to help them develop this potential. To this end, Gateway welcomes its new youth pastor, Mark Miller. Mark has been a youth pastor for eight years, and he comes to Gateway from SeaTac, Washington, with his wife, Risa, and son, Judah. “What excites me most,” Mark says, “is the potential within each student. They are world changers and dreamers that God has called to great things. And not just in the future, but right here and now!” Gateway’s student ministries are all about connection, relationships, and fun. Young Families and Host Ministries We understand the demands that come as you are trying to raise little ones or simply getting to know people since you’ve graduated from college. We focus on young families and young adults by providing events, resources, and connection spots to help you along the way. Sometimes you just need to get out of the routine of the daily grind, and so we’ve created some fun events where you can hang out with your friends and family and meet new people. Some of the events we put on throughout the year are: • Fall—Harvest Party • Winter—Sledding at Hurricane Ridge, Roller-skating • Spring—Board Game Night • Summer—Camping trip, BBQ We also offer classes throughout the year to help parents be more effective at raising their kids and help couples develop healthy marriages. These are great spots to meet new people, share experiences, and learn more about how to navigate this special time of life.
Host Ministries “The people were really friendly” is a comment often heard from first-time attendees of gatherings at Gateway. Teams of energetic volunteers are intentional about making Gateway a friendly, fun, and warm place to attend. Greeters, hosts and ushers, and Welcome Center personnel volunteer to help new guests, and those not-so new, enjoy the gatherings. On any given Sunday, guests may include a person or family who has recently moved from as far away as the east coast and is looking for a new church. Smiling volunteers are always excited to help new attendees find their way around a sprawling facility, lead parents to the spacious kids’ church auditorium for child care and activities, or to answer questions about the types of services available. Experience and enthusiasm are common traits of hosts; one of the host captains has served continuously for over twenty years. More than thirty volunteers serve as door greeters alone with dozens of others serving as helpful usher-hosts under the supervision of a half-dozen leaders. Recently, the host teams greatly exceeded the call of duty in helping to host the full-house crowds of the Phil Wickam concert; the net proceeds of which benefited local outreach efforts. Host teams are scheduled to serve during gathering times of their choosing. More information is available through the church office or by calling 360-779-5515.

Why Christian Education? Because Results Matter
C
ardus Education recently published the results of a national survey that measured the outcomes of Christian, private, and public education. They state: “Compared to their public school and non-religious private school peers; Christian school graduates are generous, outwardly-focused individuals who stabilize their communities by their uncommon commitment to their families, their churches, and larger society. Similarly, graduates of Christian schools are more generous with their time, participating far more than their peers both in service trips for relief and development and in mission trips.” Their findings also showed that these students tend to feel better equipped to deal with problems and experience a greater sense of direction in life. The graduates from Gateway Christian Schools confirm these findings. They excel in both academics and in their chosen careers. Over the past few years, ninety-seven percent of our high school seniors have enrolled in two- or four-year colleges. The other three percent have pursued careers in the ministry or the US Military after graduation. Gateway Christian Schools District Update This has been a tremendous year for Gateway Christian Schools, and I am eager to share it with you. In the spring of 2012, I became the new administrator of Gateway Christian Schools. Even in the short period of time I’ve been here, I’ve seen Gateway Christian Schools move forward—at a pace nobody anticipated. In July of 2012, Gateway Schools acquired Crosspoint Academy from CRISTA Ministries. This move tripled the size of our student population and generated a great deal of interest from our community in the schools. Let me share some other key changes with you: • A while back we were approached about adding the Arrowsmith System to our school, a program designed to help students who have certain learning disabilities. There was a great deal of research supporting the work accomplished through the Arrowsmith System, but no school in our area offered the program to the students. After securing trained teachers, our first classes were offered in September. The results have been amazing—amazing enough that we’ve expanded the program to both campuses for the fall of 2013! • We have begun to recruit international students, which is increasing the school’s population. Last year, the secondary school grew by twenty percent. This year it appears we will grow again. • We continue to build our concurrent credit program. This allows students to remain in high school while getting college credits for some of the courses they are taking. We will be adding Oceanography and Meteorology to our offerings, which will expand our science offerings significantly. Additionally, we will be offering Mandarin Chinese for the first time. • Three new bus routes have also made it easier for families to consider Gateway Christian Schools. We will continue to think about expanding these routes as needed. In addition to these changes, I could talk at length about what our kids do in class every day. Their accomplishments as growing learners are numerous. Many of the students are also excelling in athletics. This is a great community to grow in. Finally—and this is true of both campuses—what hasn’t changed is that at Gateway Christian Schools you will find caring individuals who are devoted to working with families to help children. Our philosophy is to try to treat each student like he or she is our own. This attention begins with the interview process. Come and visit to see what a fun experience school can be! Gateway Christian Schools Elementary & Secondary Programs ELEMENTARY Kindergarten–6th Grade | Poulsbo and Bremerton Campuses A safe, fun environment encourages educational growth and experience. Our intentionally smaller class sizes ensure individual attention for all of our students. Our teachers provide the fundamentals for a successful academic career and make learning a joy. Students get the personal attention and care they need to succeed and grow. Spiritual education is enhanced through weekly chapels. The elementary students sing songs, pray as a group, and listen to speakers from local area churches. Students learn about needs throughout the world by taking part in fundraisers. Students have sold handmade hats, CDs, baked goods, goldfish, and more to raise money for the Sluys/Anderson Primary School in Sakila, Tanzania. MIDDLE SCHOOL 6th–8th Grade | Bremerton Campus Here students develop skills and prepare for the rigors of high school. We keep our class sizes regulated so we can provide attention to students in the formative years between elementary and high school. We focus on the core subjects and skills that will prepare students for high school. In order to provide a well-rounded school experience, we augment those core subjects through modern and varied elective options such as computers, yearbook, health, band, Spanish, and physical education. Spiritual development is fostered through our biblically integrated curriculum and weekly chapels, which include student-lead worship and relevant speakers to challenge and encourage our students. Local area pastors also lead a Sapiritual Emphasis Week twice a year to allow students to dig deep, reflect, and focus on how God can use them now. HIGH SCHOOL 9th–12th Grade | Bremerton Campus We give our students a significant head start on the requirements for college and life. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors have the opportunity to take college-level courses to prepare for higher learning. We currently offer the following concurrent courses on our Bremerton Campus: Communications 194; English 101, 102, and 105; Theatre 107; and Speech 201. Students receive not only high school credits, but also transcript credits from participating universities. Additional electives include: speech, technology (yearbook, digital media, computer animation, and computer applications), physical education (weight training and health), fine and performing arts (art, photography, band/choir, and performance company), and foreign languages. We believe it is important for students to develop character through community engagement. Secondary students are required to serve within our community by completing community service hours each school year. We also offer global opportunities for engagement. Our students, faculty, and staff have traveled to countries such as Ukraine, Guatemala, and Israel on missionary and educational trips.
Athletic Programs Our athletic programs offer physical and social instruction outside the classroom environment. Our well-respected teams have been very successful both on and off the field. Students graduate prepared to advance in competitive sports programs. The Arrowsmith Program at Gateway Christian Schools positions each child to reach his or her highest potential. The program identifies cognitive weaknesses and prescribes a specific, individualized learning profile designed to strengthen needed cognitive abilities. The Arrowsmith Program considers a learning dysfunction to be the result of a specific brain area that is weaker than other areas. Neuroscience has established that different areas of the brain work together in functional systems to accomplish complex mental activities, such as reading or writing or numeracy. Each brain area has a very specific and critical role to play in the learning process. A weakness in just one area can affect a number of different learning processes. Students who have experienced failure, or who have significantly struggled to achieve success, enjoy a newfound sense of accomplishment in the Gateway Arrowsmith Program, working with their peers as they move through the levels of their individualized programs. Many students who are struggling in multiple subjects greatly benefit from the program, which allows them to effectively and competently handle academic curriculum. WHAT THE ARROWSMITH PROGRAM PROVIDES • A suite of cognitive programs comprising over twelve thousand discrete levels of computerized, auditory, and pencil and paper exercises that are refined and updated regularly • A detailed assessment that identifies your student’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses • An individualized learning profile for each student based on his or her own assessment • An individualized program of cognitive exercises • The Arrowsmith Record of Program, which allows teachers to maintain regular quantitative and qualitative data • Monthly analysis of the data that compares student progress to Arrowsmith benchmark goals for each exercise • Regular communication between the parent(s) and teacher for student progress • A year-end assessment that measures student progress in each of the cognitive areas addressed • A year-end learning profile based on improvements in the specific cognitive areas • An updated program of cognitive exercises for each year Students in the Arrowsmith Program at Gateway Christian School find themselves in an environment of acceptance, warmth, and compassion, becoming part of a community with a common goal: strengthening weak areas of the brain. Teachers work closely with the students within a safe and encouraging Christian environment. The Arrowsmith classroom at Gateway offers a one to ten ratio of trained Arrowsmith instructors to students. Smaller class sizes provide individual attention, and each of our students receives the time and care he or she needs to succeed and grow. Founded in 1969, North Kitsap Preschool is now celebrating over forty years of setting the highest standard in academic preschool experience, serving families in Kitsap and Jefferson Counties. There are no restrictions on enrollment. We remain diligent in meeting the needs of young families seeking an academic Christian preschool education for their children. We are committed to offering your preschool child the best possible academic and early childhood learning experience that our professional team of teachers and our outstanding facilities can provide. Our NKPS staff’s motto is “Loving your child as Christ loves us.” North Kitsap Preschool provides age-appropriate activities for approximately one hundred students annually, students who are developmentally ready for a structured, academic-enriched experience. Some students who are developmentally advanced begin class at age two and a half. Most students begin preschool at age three and stay enrolled through age five or six, depending on the progress made and the individual educational goals of the parents. Our staff partners with parents to provide challenging curriculum for this wide spectrum of growth and development. Our classroom core curriculum is based on a combination of resources, including A Beka Book and William H. Sadlier, Inc. texts. Each student receives a personal set of books as the basis for his or her preschool experience. The Beginner Class for three-year-olds uses books and materials introducing basic shapes, colors, numbers, letters and phonics, and Bible stories. The Pre-kindergarten classes for four- and five-year-olds receive books and materials that review basic information and provide additional challenges through refining basic writing skills, math concepts, social studies, science, artistic expression, and Bible knowledge. In the future, pre-kindergarten students may also be offered Language Enrichment in Spanish and Japanese if North Kitsap Preschool is able to find linguists with a passion for preschool. Building interpersonal relationships and encouraging social skills are vital goals of our preschool experience. do not abound. Our class activities are designed to promote friendship, conversation, and relationships outside our classroom walls. Our teachers provide families the opportunity to plan social activities by providing each family a class directory. At North Kitsap Preschool, our teachers acknowledge that they are only a part of the complete educational experience. We continually learn from our outstanding students who enroll every year and bring so much vitality and uniqueness to our program. Learning at NKPS is a shared experience, a partnership between eager students, enthusiastic educators, and positive parents. North Kitsap Preschool offers a nine-month academic program. The program has the following varied options for student enrollment: • BEGINNER CLASS for two-and-a-half- and three-year-olds who are potty trained • PRE-KINDERGARTEN CLASSES for four- and five-year-olds • BEGINNER PRE-K CLASS for young four-year-olds with no previous preschool experience • INTERMEDIATE PRE-K CLASS for older four-year-olds with some previous preschool experience • ADVANCED PRE-K CLASS for older four- and five-year-olds who just miss the kindergarten cut-off. These students are already writing their names and have previous preschool experience and fine motor skills that enable them to work well with a five-year-old kindergarten curriculum. THE TEACHING STAFF Our teachers are seasoned with experience in early childhood education as well as time spent in the classroom. Our staff is high energy and enthusiastic about the opportunity we have to work with wonderful students. Head teachers have earned college degrees or specialized certification for preschool teaching. Staff members maintain current CPR certification. Director, Paula Michelsen, has taught preschool curriculum for over three decades: one year with the Olympic College Cooperative Preschool and thirty-plus years at North Kitsap Preschool. Having earned her RN license and two degrees from Stanford University (a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology), “Ms. Paula” is happy to continue the opportunity for service at NKPS.
Three Simple Things Every Child Needs 1) Eye contact—An infant’s eyes begin focusing somewhere around two to four weeks of age. One of the first images that holds an infant’s attention is the human face, in particular, the eyes. After a child is approximately six to eight weeks of age, you will notice that his or her eyes are always moving and seem to be searching for something. Do you know what the baby is looking for? That’s right: the infant is searching for another set of eyes. As early as two months old, the baby’s eyes lock on another set of eyes. Already the child is communicating emotionally, and even at this very early age, the baby’s emotional tank needs to be filled. 2) Physical Touch—This contact should be natural and comfortable, rather than showy or overdone. Children growing up in a home where parents use eye and physical contact are more likely to be comfortable with themselves and other people. They will have an easy time communicating with others, and consequently, be well-liked and have good self-esteem. 3) Focused attention—Focused attention is giving a child full, undivided attention in such a way that the child feels without doubt completely loved, valuable enough in his or her own right to warrant parents’ undistracted watchfulness, appreciation, and uncompromising regard. In short, focused attention makes a child feel like the most important person in the world in his or her parents’ eyes. When parents display these signs of love to their children, it creates a context in which discipline is more readily received and punishment is less necessary. Is There More to Life?
M
any people are confused or uncertain about who Jesus is. Why is there so much interest in a person born over two thousand years ago? Why are so many people around the globe excited followers of Jesus? Why do Christians say, “Jesus died for my sins”? Why do they say we need him, or why did he come to earth? Why in the world should anyone bother to even find out? People have questions about Jesus, about the meaning of life, about who God is, and how he could allow suffering, sin, and injustice. Over twenty-five years ago, the Alpha Course was started at Holy Trinity Brompton Church in London, and since then has been taken by over nineteen million people in over one hundred seventy countries in eighty-one different languages. Two years ago, the Alpha Course came to Gateway Fellowship Church as a way to give people from the Poulsbo area a place to ask questions about Christianity. The course takes place once a week, over eleven thought-provoking weeks and covers topics such as who is Jesus, why did he die, how can people have faith, why and how do we pray, what is the Bible, how do we read it, does God heal today, who is the Holy Spirit, etc. Each evening starts with a delicious meal where guests get a chance to develop relationships, talk, laugh, and share in life. Then Nicky Gumbel, the pioneer of the Alpha Course, presents a topic via DVD, followed by discussion and questions. No question is seen as too simple or too hostile. The Alpha Course is laid-back, fun, intelligent, and relevant. It’s for anyone or everyone, all are welcome regardless of religious background or viewpoint. People attend the Alpha Course for a variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists or if there is any point to life; others may have attended church but never understood the basics of Christianity. Everyone comes with the same objective: to determine whether Jesus Christ has any relevance in their lives. “The Alpha Course is super laid-back and it’s fun. You don’t have to do it to impress anyone. Growth Groups
H
ave you ever thought about going to church but wondered, “What do we have in common with those people?” And if you ever actually tried a church out, you might have experienced the “it-seems-like-everyone-knows-everyone-else-and-I-don’t” moment. At Gateway, we get that and have what we think is a pretty good solution called “growth groups.” Growth groups are the centerpiece of Gateway’s fellowship. As our church grows larger on Sundays, we grow smaller during the week in groups to meet new friends and to learn more about ourselves and God. We feel that this is so important that we encourage everyone who attends Gateway to be involved in a group a couple of seasons each year. Gateway offers a vast array of different groups. Some are continuous, while others last around eleven weeks. Our military community has appreciated that they can fully participate in a group for a season before leaving for their tour of duty. Many are based on topics, such as finances, marriage, Christian discipleship, or specific books of the Bible, while others are simply focused on shared common interests, like cooking, football, or quilting for charity. Our hope with all of our groups is that you will start to cultivate relationships that will help you know that you are cared for. Jocelyn Horton, a navy wife and mother of two, has attended several growth groups, including Play Café; Parks & Play Group; Growing Healthy Marriages; and Potluck, Games, & God. She says, “I started attending Gateway and joined my first growth group about a year and a half ago. At that time, I was in a place in life where I felt very alone and distant from God. My husband was on deployment and I was battling postpartum depression and behavior issues with my then three-year-old. I couldn’t go to friends houses, or even the park, because he would hit other children and act out, and we would have to go back home. I felt very isolated. When I joined Play Cafe, I found a group of woman who prayed for me during this time and gave me advice concerning his behavior and embraced us with Christian love. These women have ultimately become some of my best friends and have helped me to grow in my faith. And I would not have them or know where I would be today without them and Play Café. . . . “Growth groups are intimate. You can meet people in large settings, but in growth groups you can meet lasting friends and get to know new people who might share the same interest as you. Spending time with other Christian couples has also benefited my marriage. My husband and I both attended the Potluck, Games, & God group. It was a time where we could get together and meet other couples while our children were looked after. 7 Tips for Dealing with Marital Stress 1) Practice forgiveness—It is impossible to love someone fully when you are unable to forgive. Practice the process of forgiveness so you can be free to love. 2) Make time to talk about your relationship—In our busy world, having conversations about how your relationship is doing won’t happen naturally. You have to be intentional and create regular times to ask, “How are we doing?” 3) Come back to unfinished conversations—Sometimes, circumstances make it difficult to finish a heated or tough conversation. When this happens, it is important to establish when you will pick up the conversation again. 4) Address your anger before you go to sleep—While you may not be able to bring resolution to an issue right before bed, it is important to at least start the conversation. Anger stimulates our bodies, which makes sleep difficult. This makes it hard to have a clear-headed conversation the following day. 5) Cultivate gratitude—Let’s face it, there are things that you should expect from your spouse (marital faithfulness being one of those), but when desires become demands, gratitude disappears, resulting in the aggravation of unmet expectations. Find things to be thankful for even if they are things that are expected. 6) Allow God to be your primary source—A simple reality is that anytime we seek to fill the depths of our need with anyone or anything other than God, we will find disappointment. This is heightened in marriage relationships when our spouses are required to become God-like in ways they were never meant to be. Communicating, repenting, and embracing Jesus are some ways to avoid putting this kind of pressure on your spouse. 7) Know when to get help—There are moments when you realize that your marital relationship is heading in an undesirable direction and none of your attempts to change that direction seem to work. When that is the case, find a mentoring couple in the church, a pastor, or a therapist to offer the help you need. As therapists, we would be honored to be a resource for you so you can move toward the relationship you were meant to have with your spouse.

Free Summer Camp Experience for Foster Children Royal Family KIDS is an international organization that develops week-long summer camps for abused children who have been placed in foster care. For many of these children, their week at camp is the first time in their lives they feel security, warmth, and love from dedicated adults. It can be a life-changing experience—as one camper said, “This has been the best week of my whole life.” When the children arrive at RFK Camp they are assigned a caring counselor, along with a surrogate “Grandma” and “Grandpa” and “Aunt” and “Uncle.” For many children, this is their first experience of a healthy family dynamic. They discover self-worth and a feeling of success as they accomplish projects and make friends. John and Jude Hubbell have been the camp directors since establishing the local camp in 1992 and have a team of around eighty volunteers from Gateway Fellowship who give of their time and talents. The local camp will host thirty-eight children ages six to twelve, while 6,270 children will have this same experience at camps across the nation and around the world. Director John Hubbell expresses his feelings this way: “We can’t change child abuse. It’s still going to go on. But we can make a difference for a week. We can make them smile. We can send them away with happy memories. I come away feeling this is what God wants me to do, that we’re all an extension of God’s hand.” We thank the many local businesses that support this camp experience. A unique fundraiser that everyone can participate in is coming up: a Community Shoe drive scheduled for September 1 through October 25 to raise money for the camp. Be on the lookout for the large red boxes around town where you can donate your used shoes. All shoes, of any condition, are welcome because they will be repurposed, and the money earned goes toward running our local Royal Family KIDS camp program. Day of Hope is a day of clothing and food distribution as well as free dental, medical and legal services.
