Elly Sarwono’s oldest daughter has always enjoyed math, but the things she learned in school weren’t always challenging enough. So Sarwono began playing math games with her daughter, eventually inviting some of the girl’s
friends to join them. “It’s really not fun playing games with your mom,” Sarwono said. She started playing these games when her daughter — who will be a junior at Redmond High School this year — and her friends were in kindergarten, and by the time the kids were in fourth grade, they were

getting more serious about these after-school sessions. So Sarwono asked the principal at the time at Norman Rockwell Elementary School in Redmond — where her daughter was enrolled — if they could hold meetings at the school. The result was Math in Action, an after-school program at Rockwell that went beyond the math games to include compe-
titions. The students participated in competitions throughout the Seattle area including Math is Cool, Math Olympiad and Math Kangaroo. “I told (the kids), if you work hard, you can do these competitions,” Sarwono said. “They worked really hard.” Since Math in Action began in 2007, others outside of Rockwell have wanted Sarwono to bring
the program to their school. And this is the first year she will do so in the form of Ellipsis Academy, a math-enrichment program Sarwono developed from her years as a parent volunteer running Math in Action. Ellipsis is currently for fourth and fifth graders and offered at Rockwell as well as John James Audubon Elementary School in Redmond. Sarwono said
she hopes to expand it for second through eighth graders. Now that Sarwono has developed her program into a business, the cost is $165 per child, per semester. She is also offering classes at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, which range from $325-345 per child, per semester. Sarwono said tuition for the [ more SCHOOLS page 14 ]

EvergreenHealth joins Friends of Youth as new safe place Friends of Youth (FOY) recently welcomed its newest partner, EvergreenHealth, as a new King County Safe Place. In keeping with Safe Place’s mission, EvergreenHealth’s Redmond and Kirkland emergency departments now will be available to connect youth in crisis with immediate help. The new partnership was announced recently with the assistance of FOY at the Healthiest Best Fair at EvergreenHealth, which serves the same Eastside population as FOY programs. King County’s Safe Place is part of a national network of more than 20,000 partnering businesses and
community locations that display the yellow diamond Safe Place sign. When youth enter the designated Safe Places and ask for help, trained staff members are able to connect them with resources to help them stay safe and resolve the crisis. Safe Place was launched in King County in August 2011 as a collaboration among three nonprofit agencies serving the county’s children and teens: • Friends of Youth in north and east King County • Auburn Youth Resources in south King County • YouthCare in Seattle As awareness of the program and the num-
ber of Safe Place sites has grown, requests for help are increasing, said FOY CEO Terry Pottmeyer. “It is critical that young people in crisis have a safe way to seek help, instead of turning to the streets where they are vulnerable to predators,” she said. “We are pleased to welcome EvergreenHealth to the Safe Place collaboration to increase outreach into the community. The King County program has become one of the largest Safe Place networks in the country.” Barbara Jensen, trauma and preparedness program manager for EvergreenHealth, added, “This new partnership with Friends of Youth is an incredibly important one for our organization and the community. We are proud to join many of the other businesses and groups in King County to extend the Safe Place program and connect teens with resources when they need them most.”

Siblings as bullies: When rivalry becomes abusive Siblings fight, sometimes a lot; there is nothing new about that. In fact most parents would consider this pretty normal. But a new study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that being picked on by a brother or sister can be harmful to a child’s mental health, resulting in increased anger, depression and anxiety in the victimized child. Kirsten Reddish, a counselor with Youth Eastside Services, has worked with families where sibling bullying is a big problem. “Since it’s often an older sibling picking on a younger one, the younger child is at a disadvantage because he or she doesn’t have the skills to deflect the aggression or express what’s going on—except to act out, often in ways that aren’t helpful,” she said. Sometimes what is essentially teasing can rise to emotional abuse. The abused sibling can become frustrated at not being able to keep up in the verbal volleying. Some may resort to throwing something or becoming physical. In this way it can quickly escalate to physical abuse. Because identity formation is a big part of ‘tween and teen years, bullying can shape a child’s self-image. Children who are bullied often take on a victim mentality that makes them feel “less than” the sibling doing the bullying. This can really deflate self-esteem. In one case noted by Reddish, the child’s victim mentality made her a target at school as well. “She became hopeless and had fantasies of harming her older sibling,” she said. Conversely, sibling relationships that are close and nurturing have been found to play an important role in developing a child’s ability to relate to peers and resolve conflict, as well as his or her social and emotional intelligence. Reddish recommends working with the perceived “victim” and helping the child express how certain words or actions make her or him feel. The more concrete a child can be at verbalizing, the better he or she will be at resolving conflict. “Ask about the sibling and how they perceive their relationship. Who is stronger? What they do when their sibling hurts their feelings? Does that work?” says Reddish. It’s also beneficial to let the aggressive sibling understand how words or actions impact or hurt a brother or sister. And when there is trouble or an argument, give consequences to every child who was involved. Finally, one of the biggest things parents can do is look out for how they model relationships. If there is a lot of contempt between partners or ex-partners it can cause a child to see hurtful conflict as a normal part of relationships. As always, if the situation seems serious or you are unable to improve it, reach out for help from a child counselor, such as the experts found at Youth Eastside Services.

They assessed the range and extent of sibling aggression, looking at measures like physical assault, with and without a weapon or injury; property aggression like stealing something from the child with or without force, or breaking a sibling’s things on purpose; and psychological bullying such as saying things to make the child feel bad, scared or not wanted. Mental health was also assessed. The results showed that sibling aggression was associated with significantly worse mental health and distress was evident even in cases of mild sibling aggression. The data also found that sibling and peer bullying had very similar negative effects on mental wellbeing. “I think the important thing to take from this is that parents, and those who work with children, should treat sibling aggression as potentially harmful and not dismiss it as normal,” says Reddish. It can take time for parents to distinguish between normal sibling arguing and aggression or bullying behavior — after all, some kids have a short fuse, especially if there are other stresses at home or in school. Things to watch for include a child who sees himself as less than others, or one sibling who always seems at fault while the other is usually the “good kid.”

DigiPen Institute of Technology first opened its doors in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1988. The school moved to Redmond in 1998 and has remained here ever since — although, it did move buildings once and has been in its current location for three years. When that location at 9931 Willows Rd. N.E. opened its doors in late August 2010, a ribboncutting ceremony was held and City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione declared the day DigiPen Day. This year, the school is opening its campus to the community once again for DigiPen Day from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 7. Angela Kugler, vice president of external affairs for the school, said they want to highlight the DigiPen faculty and students this year, so a number of them will be giving industry talks on gaming and animation throughout the day. Attendees will also be able to view student animations and play student video games, as well. The free event is open to all ages and Kugler said there will be various family friendly activities such as a tie-dye station, painting, drawing and pottery. There will also
be a life-sized Angry Birds game in which people can throw the birds at stuffed pigs from the game and inflatables. Lunch is also included at the event. Kugler said while they won’t turn anyone away on the day, they would prefer people to RSVP ahead of time on their website, www.digipen. edu. The third annual DigiPen Day will also celebrate the school’s 25th anniversary. “It’s an opportunity for us to thank the community for supporting us for many years,” Kugler said. DigiPen founder and President Claude Comair added, “The celebration of DigiPen Day this year is particularly special for us because it marks DigiPen’s 25th anniversary. As the first university in the world to grant bachelor’s degrees in game development, DigiPen has made Redmond its home and has always felt very welcome in the community.” Marchione, who will speak at DigiPen Day at 11:45 a.m., said the city is “delighted” to celebrate the school’s milestone anniversary, and is proud to have served as DigiPen’s hometown headquarters since 1998. “Under Claude Comair’s visionary leadership, the city has been
pleased to assist as DigiPen has grown and prospered over the years, providing a world-class education to the talented artists, computer scientists and engineers of the dynamic game industry,” the mayor said. Comair said the community has always been very supportive of DigiPen’s efforts and companies such as Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo have been great neighbors. “We are honored to be part of the growth that has happened in the industry and in Redmond over the years,” Comair said. “I hope that everyone in the community will be able to come and celebrate with us on DigiPen Day.” Marchione added that DigiPen has been a great asset to the community — beyond serving an educational need for the region, the school has been a catalyst for the Puget Sound’s “increasingly digital innovationdriven economy.” Kugler said DigiPen has had a direct impact on the growth in the local gaming industry. When the school moved to Redmond, there were 14 game companies in the area. Now there are more than 350. “We definitely made a measurable contribution to the industry,” Kugler said.

While working at the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Ed Sobey met individuals who gave the world a number of great inventions including the MRI, CT scan and the lens for the electron microscope. Through these meetings, the Redmond resident wanted to figure out what made them successful. He didn’t think he would find one single thing all the inventors shared. But he did. “Right away, I found a common element,” Sobey said. “They all had the opportunity to mess around in a shop or laboratory.” He said in an environment where people can play around, experiment, make mistakes and recover without it hurting their career, they gain the self-confidence to continue with what they are doing — potentially coming up with the next big thing. Sobey wanted to give students this same opportunity, so for

In science, there is typically a lot of lecturing even though that part doesn’t matter as much as what is done with the information, just like in physical education. Sobey said with all of the experimenting, his workshops are total chaos and he loves when he sees the students begin to understand more of what they are doing and the joy that comes with that as excitement erupts throughout the classroom. “That moment of glee,” he said, “is the thing I enjoy…that’s the good stuff.” In addition to learning science, Sobey said the students are also learning to work in small teams, how to create, think critically and problem solve — things that are not always taught in the traditional classroom. “Education is important, but what’s really important is your ability to think,” he said. “We don’t practice that.”

The Green Redmond Partnership will host a volunteer work event at Farrel-McWhirter Park tomorrow as part of its Last Saturday series. These regularly scheduled work parties are in addition to multiple work events completed by school groups, individuals and dedicated forest stewards. This month’s event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. At the turn of the century, the property now known as Farrel-McWhirter Park was the site of the Peterson Sawmill, one of the largest sawmills in the area. The property was purchased in the 1930s by the McWhirter family, who established the farm as a summer home, soon making it their permanent residence. In 1971, Elise Farrel-McWhirter, an avid horsewoman, left the 68acre parcel of land to the City of Redmond for a park. The park is diverse, with an active equestrian program, preschool, small animal area, picnic and play areas and an extensive trail system that meanders along streams and through the forested area of the park. It is the forested areas where Shelley Wong, the forest steward at the park, has been working since 2011 toward the removal of non-native, invasive plant material and planting native plants in their place. Farrel-McWhirter Park is located at 19545 Redmond Road. Gloves and tools are provided. Sobey described the books in the upcoming series as a launchpad rather than a cookbook, meaning it will give kids an idea of how to build car model prototypes but not a detailed step-by-step procedural on the process. He has visited schools in 25 countries ranging from aboriginal schools in Australia to schools for gifted students to students at university. With the school-aged students, Sobey said his workshops are usu-
ally for third through fifth graders while the university-aged students are at the graduate level. During his workshops, like in the book, Sobey will give students an idea of what to do — such as building a prototype of a car — a bunch of parts and then step back and let them explore and experiment. “Let’s see what you can discover,” is what he likes to tell the students, hoping they will come up with something he has never seen. He said it doesn’t matter what age the students are, they all make the same mistakes. For the elementary-aged students, the workshops expose them to focused learning in science, and for the university students, it solidifies what they already know. “It’s a very encouraging environment,” Sobey said. “Everybody’s engaged…learning is maximized. Teaching is minimized.” He compared the way science is taught to how physical education is taught. Sobey said in physical education,

LWSD students continue to score above state on standardized tests Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students scored above state averages on state standardized tests, performing particularly well in mathematics. Math scores improved in five grades and the two high school end-of-course (EOC) exams and fell in parallel with state scores in grade six. “Our staff and students have worked hard in mathematics to improve scores,” said Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce. “In most grades, we are seeing a clear upward trend over the last five years.” District math scores improved in all three elementary grades tested. Third grade math showed the most improvement, rising from 81.6 to 83.4 percent at standard. State scores remained about the same in that grade. Fourth grade gained more than 1 percent and the increase from 80.2 to 81.5 percent represented
the third straight year of increases. State scores rose even more, from 59.3 percent to 62.5 percent. District fifth grade scores improved slightly, rising from 81.5 percent to 81.9 percent while state scores fell 1.2 percent to 62.6. At the middle school level, sixth grade math scores fell at both the state and district levels. District scores fell 2 percent from 81.7 to 79.7 percent, erasing most of last year’s gains but remaining well above the scores from 2009 to 2011. State scores fell about the same amount, by 2.1 percent. District seventh grade scores followed last year’s 6.6 percent increase with another increase of 3.6 percent, rising from 80.7 percent to 84.3 percent. That is more than 10 percent higher than the 2009 score of 73.5 percent. State scores for seventh grade rose from 59.2 percent to 63.7 percent. Eighth grade
math scores increased from 73.1 percent at standard to 74.9 percent. State eighth grade math scores, on the other hand, fell from 55.4 percent to 53.2 percent. On the EOC exams in math, 88.7 percent of district students were at standard on the Math Year 1 exam compared to 80.7 percent at the state level. For EOC Year 2, 95 percent of district students were at standard compared to 89.4 percent statewide. Science scores in fifth grade in LWSD rose from 87 percent to 87.9 percent, building on last year’s 6.5 percent gain. State scores rose 0.2 percent in fifth grade science, from 66.3 percent to 66.5 percent. Eighth grade scores slipped statewide and in Lake Washington. District scores fell from 84.9 percent to 82.9 percent while state scores fell from 66.4 percent to 64.9 percent. On the new EOC biology exam, 92.5
percent of LWSD students were at standard, compared to 81.7 percent at the state level. “Science continues to be a strength in Lake Washington, although we will review our eighth grade scores,” said Pierce. District reading scores tended to rise at the elementary level. Elementary grades three through five all rose in reading, with increases of 2.8 percent, 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent of students meeting the standard respectively in grades three, four and five. State scores also rose in all elementary grades. District scores and state scores were mixed in the middle grades. Sixth grade scores remained about the same, falling by 0.2 percent to 85.1 percent for district students and rose by 0.8 percent at the state level to 71.4 percent. District seventh grade student reading scores fell by 3.2 percent, a
year after they rose by 12.7 percent, with 84.1 percent of students at standard. Scores also fell, by 2.5 percent, at the state level, to 68.7 percent. District eighth grade scores remained about the same, falling by 0.2 percent to 83.3 percent. State scores at that grade fell 1 percent to 66.2 percent at standard. In high school, district reading scores fell 0.5 percent but remained within the range of recent years at 92.7 percent. State scores rose from 81.1 percent to 83.5 percent. District writing scores fell in two of three grades tested, contrasting with last year’s gains. Fourth grade writing scores for the district remained relatively flat, gaining just 0.3 percent at 80.4 percent of students at standard. State scores in fourth grade writing gained a little more, rising from 61.4 to 62.1 percent. Writing scores for the district’s seventh graders fell from 88.8 percent to 87.4 percent while state scores stayed exactly the same, with 71 percent at standard. District tenth grade writing scores fell to 93.7 percent, down from 95.2 percent, while state scores fell slightly, from 85.2 to 84.9 percent.
School district recognized for recycling Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has been recognized as one of King County’s “Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling” for the fifth consecutive year. The district was recognized for efforts to implement and expand recycling and waste reduction programs. As of this past year, composting programs have been introduced to all but five schools. Finn Hill Middle School has made the switch from Styrofoam food trays to compostable ones and yard waste from every school is now composted. Every classroom, office and cubicle in the district is now equipped with a recycling bin and all surplus electronics are either donated or sent back to the manufacturer to be recycled. Students also play a role in the waste prevention efforts, including many environmental clubs or “green teams” that encourage efforts among students.

Most children are very excited about heading back to school where they can connect with old friends and make new ones after a long summer break. It’s all about the perfect backpack, new school supplies and new gear for some. For others, excitement comes from the new classes and subjects they
will explore. For parents, it means changing routines and getting their little ones ready for the upcoming school year — including making sure they stay healthy and physically prepared for their favorite activities. Here are a few simple tips that I have found most helpful for parents preparing their kids for the new school year: Back packs: They’re cool to have and extremely convenient to use. If used incorrectly, however, they can put a strain on the back.
About 50 percent of kids overload their backpacks. Backpacks should be worn shoulder height, not above the shoulder, and they
should fall above the waist. Germs: Colds are the most common cause of lost school days (a few million per year nationwide). Hand
washing is an effective way to prevent the spread of these germs. Encourage your child to wash his/her hands frequently with soap

Redmond High School (RHS) graduates Vika Boentaram and Ashley Walls are two of 50 students who have been awarded with $2,500 scholarships each from the BECU Foundation. For more than 18 years, the foundation has awarded these scholarships to outstanding high school and undergraduate college students. “The BECU Foundation was able to expand the scholarship program by giving away five more scholarships than previous years,” said Debbie Wege, executive director of the BECU Foundation. “We take pride in the fact that our program continues to grow each year and that these student-members are putting the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ to work in their communities.” Boentaram started a UNICEF Club at RHS, which was inspired by her Indonesian background. The club has raised money to build a water system in Africa, helped an underprivileged Syrian child and initiated local charity events for children

Walls is a volunteer at local softball clinics, which was inspired by the help she received from mentors while she was a player. “Over the years, we’ve given more than $1.5 million dollars in scholarships to 715 students and every year I look forward to giving out the next set of awards,” said Wege. The recipients participated in all types of service projects, from creating a nonprofit business, Paws for a Cause, to creating an annual Halloween food drive and being a Big Buddy for the Maple Hills Swim Team. The BECU Foundation received about 500 applications and selected 50 recipients based on grades, amount of time dedicated to volunteering and an essay about their community involvement project.

RHS cross country teams to hold fundraiser runs
Redmond Lacrosse is holding registration for the fall season for its grades 5/6 and 7/8 squads. The cost is $100 per player, and each player will need to supply their own equipment. Practices start Sept. 8, with a combination of weekly games and practices until Nov. 24. There will be one Sunday activity per week. Practices and home games will either be at Marymoor or Perrigo parks. No activity will be held the week of Nov. 10 due to Veteran’s Day. Registration is open until Sept. 7. Jason Rimkus is not only taking over a new team at Redmond High — the head coach is building upon what Jeff Chandler had in motion during his three-year coaching tenure. “He got the clay and we’re able to mold it,” an upbeat Rimkus said in the coaches’ room following Monday’s afternoon practice. Nathan Moon, a senior offensive and defensive lineman, added a few minutes later as he wiped sweat from his brow: “I’m just excited for the season and the new future of Redmond football.” The Mustangs, who finished 3-7 overall last season (including a 1-3 mark in the 4A Kingco Crest Division), will host Mercer Island at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 in the teams’ season opener. High, where he compiled a 12-23 record in three years. He knows the 4A Kingco conference well, having played at Bothell High and garnering all-league honors as a defensive back. On the coaching front, he was part of the coaching staffs at Bothell, Pacific Lutheran University (where he played, as well) and Western Washington University. Chandler (7-21 with the Mustangs) resigned last December to pursue a career in school administration. “Redmond has always had great spirit, great support,” said Rimkus, adding that the school produces solid football players, as well. “I’ve had my eye on this place for a long time. (I’d) known that this has kind of been a place that’s been struggling for a while — and when the opportunity came, I just had to get here.” Everyone involved with the football program
has been supportive since Rimkus came on board, he said. Crucial elements to the Mustangs’ program, according to the coach, will be team camaraderie and passion for the game. A positive environment is key and he’ll encourage players that they have the skills and attitude to notch a successful season. Rimkus candidly says that his coaching style is demanding, as well. He and the staff work the kids hard in practice and he calls it “a new style, a new brand” of Redmond football. It can be tough, “but we’ve gotten a lot of kids all in,” Rimkus said. Returning senior quarterback Zach Wheat will lead the Mustangs’ pistol offense, which will combine run and pass plays. Rimkus said Wheat has command of the huddle and is a stellar runner.
