Labor dispute could leave students at the curb School bus drivers ask company for higher pay, call strike a last resort By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer
A dispute over wages for Vashon’s school bus drivers could lead to a strike if the group is unable come to an agreement with First Student, the company that provides Vashon’s bus service. In a disagreement that has delayed union negotiations for months, the drivers, part of the Teamsters Local Union No. 763, say their wages are not equal to those of First Student drivers in other parts of the state. They also claim there are wage inequities among the Vashon drivers themselves and that First Student has stalled negotiations and withheld public information concerning wages in other areas. The union filed formal charges against First Student with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) last week, said Jason Powell, the Teamsters’ business agent who works out of Tukwila. “They feel that the company disrespects them,” said Powell, who is involved in negotiating the union contract and has visited Vashon regularly. “They do not believe that anything short of some kind of ugly dispute is going to get them what they deserve.” No representatives from First Student were able to comment on Monday. Powell said the group of about 15 regu-
lar and substitute bus drivers, who are all Vashon residents, would likely be striking now, had he not discouraged them from doing so. Instead, 11 drivers handed out fliers about the dispute on Monday afternoon in town. The bright orange fliers were headed with the title “Labor dispute could impact student transportation” and asked islanders to call First Student and request that the company continue negotiations and offer Vashon drivers a “contract which is fair and equitable when compared to First Student bus drivers all over Washington state.” “I believe a peaceful way to work this out is a better way of doing business,” Powell said on Monday. “We’ll give the community the opportunity today to reach out to the company and let them know what they think.” Michael Soltman, Superintendent of the Vashon Island School District, said he was aware of the dispute, though not familiar with all the details, and he had encouraged both sides to work together toward “an agreement that honors both of their interests,” he said. A bus driver strike, Soltman said, would be “very difficult for this community to deal with.” At the same time, he said, the district doesn’t have much of a role in the negotiations. In some communities, school bus drivers are employed by school districts. On Vashon, bus service is provided by First Student, a large company, which also operates school buses for Seattle Public Schools and several other school SEE BUSES, 14

TUNES FILL THE POINT FOR A BLUEGRASS BENEFIT Despite drizzly weather Sunday, about 60 people made their way to Point Robinson to hear the island band Riverbend play a benefit concert for Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS). The band played old-time bluegrass and folk music under a backdrop of the Point Robinson Lighthouse, and the event netted the nonprofit roughly $550, said Kathleen Johnson, executive director of VYFS. “We’re thrilled,” Johnson said. “We were really happy that people came out and supported us.” Next month, VYFS will host another concert, when the popular island duo of Sarah Perlman and Daryl Redeker, or RedPerl, take to the stage Sept. 29 at the Vashon Theatre. The social services organization is in a time of transition, as it merges its mental health and addiction treatment programs into one division and hires some new staff (see story below).
VYFS hopes program changes will better serve islanders’ needs New face will head agency’s addiction treatment program By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Vashon Youth & Family Services, the island’s largest social service agency, recently restructured in an effort to better serve those in need of both mental health and addiction treatment services.
The change, which combined the agency’s mental health care and addiction therapy programs into one division, was several months in the making and is in line with current practices at similar agencies and new policies at the state level, said Kathleen Johnson, the executive director of VYFS. Johnson knew of this trend when she started at the agency last January, she said, and she believes the move makes sense because mental health problems and addiction frequently co-exist. “I think it is a great step forward for
patients,” Johnson said. “A person walking in our door has access to both (services) seamlessly.” While clients will notice few changes on the mental health side of the new Behavioral Health Services division, there have been new staff hired at the addiction treatment program, and new internal systems have been put in place to ensure smooth communication and improved care for clients, Johnson said. The addiction treatment program, now named Outpatient Addiction Recovery
Services (OARS), is licensed by the state and offers youth and adult substance abuse prevention, intervention, assessments, outpatient treatment and aftercare support. In addition to treating substance abuse, staff with the program also offer services for people coping with addictive behaviors and eating disorders. In time, Johnson said, she would like to see the program grow to one that can provide more intensive services and to offer more SEE VYFS, 15

Islander in jail on sex crime charge Stolen A Vashon man has been charged with a sex crime after reportedly propositioning two girls riding their bikes in town. Benjamin Allen Munday, 42, was charged last week with Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes and is currently in jail on $30,000 bail. According to charging papers filed in King County Superior Court, Munday was riding a scooter through Vashon town on Wednesday, Aug. 14, when he pulled up to two girls, ages 12 and 13, who were riding their bikes and had stopped near Subway. According to the girls, Munday tried to grab one of the girls’ hands, and after she pulled away, he asked if she wanted to ride on his scooter and if she wanted to have sex with him. When the girl said no, Munday reportedly replied, “What about your little
friend? Munday then asked the other girl if she wanted to have sex with him. The girls then went into Subway, where a store owner called police. Deputies who responded to the incident located Munday nearby and arrested him. According to charging papers, at the time Munday denied the girls’ allegations. A King County prosecuting attorney’s request for bail notes Munday’s criminal history, which includes a conviction for fourth-degree domestic violence assault in 2009. He is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing tomorrow. — Natalie Johnson
Bakery to host benefit for former employee Bob’s Bakery owner Paul Beytebiere plans to open the doors to his business this Sunday and dedicate all the proceeds from the day’s sales to his former employee, Renee Mroczek, who is battling cancer. Mroczek is known to many islanders as one of the former owners of The Monkey Tree. She went on to bake for more than a
year at Bob’s. Beytebiere would like to raise enough money to enable her to visit her parents in Michigan, he said. Additional donations will also be welcomed. “She has been such a blessing to me, Beytibiere said. Bakery hours that day will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

property ready to be claimed The investigation into recent thefts on the island is ongoing and no arrests have been made, but some stolen property has been recovered, and the King County Sheriff ’s office would like to return the belongings to their owners. Numerous items have been recovered, according to Detective Jason Stanley, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, including jewelry, several chainsaws and tools. The Vashon substation will be open today and tomorrow for islanders to stop by, identify and collect items that were stolen. All those who have been the victim of a theft are welcome to look at the items, Stanley said, whether they reported the theft or not. When possible, people should bring with them their case number, any serial numbers they may have, photos of missing jewelry and their photo identification. The substation will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Aug. 28, and 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 29. The substation is located 19021 1/2 Vashon Hwy. S.W. — Susan Riemer

Two island groups win competitive county grants Senior center garners largest grant offered by CSA program By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer
King County has awarded two grants totaling nearly $6,000 for projects to put a kiosk at the Farmers Market and to help renovate the kitchen at the senior center. The grants come as part of King County’s Community Service Area (CSA) program, which the county implemented last year as a new way to engage citizens of unincorporated King County. Funding that once sustained various unincorporated area councils — including the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council — is now being funneled to Community Engagement Grants available to any nonprofit with a vision for a project that would enhance its community. This year marked the second round of grants. Alan Painter, CSA program manager, said the new grant program was more popular throughout the county’s unincorporated areas this year and there was greater competi-

tion this time for the $60,000 in total funding. Grants were awarded to 25 different organizations and require a minimum community match of 25 percent of the total project. The largest grant in the program this year was awarded to the Vashon Senior Center, which is fundraising to remodel its outdated and nonfunctional kitchen. The $4,930 grant will go to purchase new ventilation and fire suppression systems. “I was very pleased to get the news. I was speechless, said Ava Apple, director of the senior center. The 30-year-old kitchen has been essentially unusable for years, Apple said, and the senior center has been purchasing the weekly lunches it provides for around a dozen people each week from Vashon Community Care. When the center can make its own lunches, she said, she hopes to double the number of seniors who eat there. “Our focus is on keeping seniors active and healthy, and food is a huge aspect of that, Apple said. Refurbishing the 30-year-old kitchen and installing new appliances will cost about $40,000 total. Aside from the CSA grant, the senior center has raised about $9,000 toward

the effort, Apple said. She plans to begin soliciting private donations to cover the remaining costs. “If we come up a little short, we might ask the community to support it, too, she said. The Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA), the only other Vashon group to receive a grant, will use its $1,000 award to build a portable educational kiosk for the Farmers Market. VIGA president Merrilee Runyan said that the organization has a significant library of books and films on organic and sustainable farming, food systems and healthy eating. The new kiosk will provide a place for visitors to check them out and will also hold a bulletin board with information on local farms and VIGA events. “VIGA’s mission is to support local agriculture through education and marketing, Runyan said. “We just feel like the market is a real opportunity because that’s where the most people interact with our local food system. VIGA expects the kiosk to be completed and at the market next month.

Vashon firefighters called to help fight Leavenworth wildfire Four islanders responded to a call for help fighting a large wildfire near Leavenworth, Wash., last week after it tripled in size overnight. The four were part of a group of about two dozen Vashon firefighters who have completed special training to be qualified to fight wildfires, said Brett Kranjcevich, a volunteer firefighter and mechanic for Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) who made the trip last Wednesday. He was joined by fellow VIFR volunteers Katy Burbank, Matt McCann and Wes Paulsen. A similar group responded to a fire near Wenatchee last month. Kranjcevich said fighting the wildfires was hard work, but also a good training experience for the Vashon crew, which is compensated by the state for its work. “I learn something new on every fire, he said. “It’s amazing to bring home things and teach our people how to safely fight these kinds of fires on a smaller scale. Those with wildfire training are sometimes called on by the state when wildfires grow too large for local departments to handle. When a specific zone that Vashon is a part of is called, whoever is available on short notice responds, Kranjcevich said. In Leavenworth, the crew arrived early Wednesday morning and worked from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. the first day. The islanders were part of a crew working to protect several structures from a quickly spreading fire. They returned home Saturday, when the fire was said to be 50 percent contained. “We don’t have to get this qualification, Kranjcevich said. “Those who come over and do this wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t feel like it was a worthwhile cause. —Natalie Johnson

Franciscans are off on the wrong foot on Vashon

HEALTH CARE By KATE HUNTER
As the news of the “affiliation” between Highline Medical Center (which operated the Vashon Health Center) and the Franciscan Health System hit Vashon, islanders organized two community meetings, one outcome of which was the formation of a clinic advisory committee. This effort, led by May Gerstle, proceeded with the encouragement of and in close consultation with Mark Benedum, CEO of Highline. However, recently patients of the clinic were invited by the Franciscans to a community meeting to learn about and to apply for membership in a Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC). So why are the Franciscans forming another advisory council? When Gerstle contacted Benedum about the announcement, he replied in an e-mail: “Given that Highline’s affiliation with Franciscan was only recently finalized, the PFAC model is new to me and I made statements to you that have turned out to be incorrect. You and the volunteers you recruited are welcome to apply to be members of the PFAC, but I cannot guarantee that they will be selected to serve on it.” Four representatives from the
Franciscan Health System attended the meeting. I was one of about 20 Vashon folks who attended and learned what the function of this council will and won’t be. Lisa Harrison, who conducted the meeting, explained how the councils operate (they already have others in place in other districts). She sends out an agenda telling members the topic of the evening. They might then talk to other patients about the topic to get their input to bring to the meeting. They have no say in what the topic will be, but will be the “patient-centered voice” to management and the board. Typical issues discussed, she told us, are adequate parking, telephone answering or timely services. Substantive questions related to the Ethical and Religious Directives of the Catholic Church or other hospital medical policies are not open for discussion. Tim Marsh, the Vice President for Public Relations, said, “We can’t be everything for everybody.
Last week, when we learned that the sheriff’s office had recovered some items stolen from Vashon homes and hoped to return them, we immediately posted a story to The Beachcomber’s website. Later, when we learned a longtime islander had been charged with a sex crime, we did the same, and many commented on our Facebook post about the charge. With people increasingly turning to the internet for news, we hope to update our site more frequently to provide readers with the latest news and a different content every time they visit. This week we’re pleased to announce that our website has been upgraded and with a fresh design. We think the updated layout, along with our continued efforts, will make the site more of a go-to place for news relevant to Vashon as well as features, information on upcoming events, sports news and opinions. We’re also planning to use Facebook to bring readers more of what they want — even if it’s just a fun photo, ferry alert or reminder about a show. The website’s slightly different, crisp-and-clean design makes space for more stories and photographs on the home page, which is topped by a revamped navigation bar. Also at the top are icons for social media, so readers can quickly share stories with others. The website will continue to use the “river of news” format — with the most current content appearing at the top of the home page — though the top stories will feature larger photographs, plus larger headlines and summaries. As more stories are published each day, older stories will carry smaller headlines and flow toward the bottom of the home page. The box for “trending stories” — articles that are shared and read more often than others— will also be positioned higher for faster access. Stories will also be easier to share. Underneath each story byline, readers will find options for emailing the article, printing a copy or sending a letter to the editor about the topic. The website update is being launched across most of Sound Publishing’s community papers, though the websites for paid-access newspapers, including The Beachcomber, will share a slightly different makeover. Anyone with a print subscription to The Beachcomber receives a free digital subscription that allows them to access all the stories on our website. Not too long ago, many newspaper websites were like digital copies of what appeared in print. The Beachcomber, along with other small, community papers, is moving toward posting updated content daily online, so readers get the most recent news and a different experience every time they visit. With a small newsroom staff, this isn’t always easy. But we’ve renewed our commitment to bringing readers what they deserve online — a constantly changing feed with only the latest in what matters on the island.

My precious 14-year-old son, Palmerston Burk, died by suicide in October of 2012. Did you notice I said “died by” rather than “committed” suicide? The word “committed” implies judgment and contributes to the stigma and negative connotations associated with suicide. Historically, suicide was considered a crime. Criminals commit crimes, and people who die by suicide are not criminals. A person does not “commit” cancer or a heart attack any more than they “commit” suicide. By changing your language about suicide, you’re offering a countercultural act of kindness and compassion. It may also allow a
person who needs help to step forward and ask for it without fear of stigma. The May 22, 2013, issue of Newsweek magazine contains an exploration of why suicide is an alarmingly common occurrence. Self-harm is the leading cause of death among people in the developed world for ages 15 to 49. Worldwide, a person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. By adjusting our language toward suicide, we can perhaps change the stigma and misunderstanding associated with it. To that end, I urge people to visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website at www.afsp.org to educate themselves and help bring this horrible, growing issue out of the darkness. Finally, I wish to thank the wonderful community of Vashon, which continues to encourage my family and honor my beautiful son’s memory.

If a service is requested that we don’t provide, the patient will be referred elsewhere.” Two other topics not open for discussion are the hiring of new doctors for the clinic or the operational relationship between the Franciscan and Highline systems. One question that none of us attending the meeting thought to ask is why do the Franciscan managers feel the need to set up their own council when under Gerstle’s leadership we already have a functioning advisory committee. Thinking about it later, I called the customer relations office (called the “Franciscan Experience” office) to ask. Harrison’s answer was: This is how we do it. I can only surmise that underlying this answer is the true reason: Franciscans want to control the agenda, including topics to be discussed, and don’t want a committee of islanders they have not selected who might continue asking challenging questions. We also know they must approve who sits on the Highline hospital board and who is hired. This no longer sounds like an “affiliation”; the Franciscans are clearly running the show.

Herbicides
Chemical use may be best choice for the environment To comment further on herbicide use at the Maury Island Marine Park, it’s quite unsettling to see the extent of invasive plant infestations on Vashon-Maury Islands. As a restoration contractor commissioned to use herbicide in various municipal parks, in my opinion, targeted “cut and paint” glyphosate applications (herbicide without surfactants that are harmful to fish and amphibians) are the safest method to address plant invasions. The Department of Fish & Wildlife seems not to worry about glyphosate in groundwater, even applied during fish windows. The alternative is to manually uproot invasives, which disturbs soil and causes erosion, likely more toxic than herbicide. Vashon soils are tainted by smelter pollution, so it’s even more important to retain soil health as a sponge to filter stormwater — the primary polluter of Puget Sound. Like the grit on your car, ongoing air pollution deposits throughout our landscape. Healthy forests can reduce polluted storm water runoff during winter rains, and homeowners can help by replacing lawns with evergreen vegetation. Invasive plants prevent natural regeneration of forests, and ivy is strangling trees. A study of Mercer Island forests shows English holly stems are outnumbering new native trees nine to one (for references, see seedrain.org), and another study found that holly is doubling every seven years. David Stokes, PhD, of the University of Washington-Bothell, has said holly “has the potential to become a dominant species in both number of individuals and area covered within a few decades.” The “seed rain” of holly and ivy are spread by birds and can germinate in complete shade, threatening regional forests and potentially affecting timber, fishing and recreational industries. Knotweed, which requires herbicide for eradication, is extremely detrimental to salmon habitat. Regardless of public concern or my opinion, it’s the job of government to analyze the science and weigh the risk of herbicide with the risk of invasive neglect. — Steve Richmond
Farmers Market
VIGA member provides insight, experience and diversity The author of last week’s letter to the editor (“Produce stand raises questions,” Aug. 21) raised important questions about the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA), our farmers market and its place in our community. How best to advance local agriculture is fundamental to the purpose of VIGA and a big, ongoing conversation within our organization. I invite the author and all interested islanders to join our conversation by joining VIGA, a membership organization made up of islanders actively engaged in supporting island agriculture and our local economy. Come to the Farmers Market and pick up a membership brochure, or go to our website, www. vigavashon.org to join online. We welcome you! VIGA’s board of directors is elected by the membership. Each board member brings different skills and experience to the position. For the health of our organization, we ask for commitment to our pur-

pose as well as diverse perspectives on how to achieve our mission. Bernie O’Malley has been a longtime VIGA member and supporter of local farms. For years he was a vendor at the market, first bringing island grown flowers and later, stone fruits not readily available on Vashon. To suggest that operating East-West Roadside Produce makes it impossible for him to offer valuable insight and experience to the board is a misunderstanding of the value of diversity and a disservice both to him and to the membership that elected him. — Merrilee Runyan, VIGA president
Produce stand helps town celebrate small farms Thanks to Rachel Fesler-Schnitzer for “this opportunity to start a discussion” on community supported agriculture. Let’s also consider the ways family-owned farms and those who purvey their produce support our community; it works both ways. We love Bernie O’Malley. We love his friendly troupe of helpers, and we love the experience of visiting his stand and savoring the fruits of local soil, be it the summer tomato fields and orchards of Yakima or the hand-turned loam of Vashon. In harmony with Vashon Island Growers Association, they have made uptown a true destination for anyone who celebrates small farms and green earth — a Garden of Eden, were it not for petty jealousy lurking behind the gate. That Bernie works hard, rises early and opens for business early is a tribute to the spirit of literally millions of global growers and marketers who have followed this successful, natural timetable for centuries before clocks or banks. Dawn comes early in summer; so does the work and so do the rewards. It’s hard to imagine a real farmers market opening at 10 a.m., a full hour after the bank opens its doors. The day is half over. The board of VIGA should pay attention to Bernie’s example, not cast him out. The adage is old and simple: You snooze, you lose. Nothing prevents VIGA from opening its booths early and addressing the same market needs of eager, early-rising customers. Could they also be open on Friday? Sure they could. Heck, all you can buy at the park Sunday through Friday are illegal drugs. As for Bernie’s pricing, I would caution Ms. Fesler-Schnitzer to review the legal definitions of price fixing, conspiracy and restraint of trade. Perhaps the food bank could help her understand charity, too. — John and Clare van Amerongen

Foundation clarifies recent funding history Thank you for your coverage of the Vashon Island Public Schools Foundation. The foundation is still a young organization. Since our founding in the fall of 2010, we have attempted to raise $500,000 each year. We have yet to meet that lofty but attainable goal. However, thanks to the generosity of many school families, island businesses and with the help of teachers and staff at the schools and other members of the Vashon-Maury Island community, we have come close, with pledges over $400,000 each of the past two years in support of the 2011-2012 and
Page 7
2012-2013 school years. These contributions help fund relatively small class sizes and electives and helped provide stability to the district. We are grateful for the community support we have received and hope to continue to broaden the support in the future. Our allvolunteer board works hard to be a very lean organization. After reading your Aug. 21 article, (“School district passes no-cuts budget in 11th hour”), I’d like to clarify an important point. The amount the district received from the community to support the 2012-2013 school year was budgeted in July 2012 based on our spring 2012 pledge drive. The actual contributions came in over the subsequent 12 months and provided $375,000 to the district. For the coming 2013-2014 school year, as you reported, the district budgeted a lower figure of $275,000 from the foundation because our pledge drive fell a bit short in the spring of 2013. The district has to budget conservatively in order to not rely on funds that might not materialize. We hope to continue to engage the community and always welcome contributions at our website at www.vashonschoolsfoundation.org or by mail to our Vashon P.O. Box 481. We are grateful for the past and continuing support of the community, and we are proud to work for the benefit and continued success of our students, our teachers and our schools. — Laura Bienen Vashon Island Public Schools Foundation treasurer
ADHD and substance abuse
Medication provides benefits for adolescents A comment recently made during a community discussion of methamphetamines must be addressed. It was stated that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are prescribed Ritalin (methylphenidate), “a close cousin to amphetamines: Statistically, this puts them at risk for amphetamine addiction.” That view is not supported by scientific research. As an addictions professional, I fear this will become the next Vashon “urban legend,” with parents discontinuing medications that are profoundly helpful. Imaging studies show differences among ADHD subjects in brain areas that control movement, reasoning, logic, behavioral control and sensory reward that are also involved in substance use disorders (SUD). ADHD is associated with problems thinking, learning, controlling behaviors, maintaining interpersonal relationships and developing psychiatric disorders and SUD. Adults with untreated ADHD may suffer occupational impairment due to poor education, performance and reasoning. Perceiving themselves as failures, many with untreated ADHD attempt to self-medicate poor attention, restlessness, difficulty learning and processing information. SEE LETTERS, NEXT PAGE

We intend to buy for cash but part of the cash is from the sale of our house in Kansas. We have it listed and priced to sell fast. We made an offer on something here but the seller wanted something called a “verification of funds to close”. We didn’t want to fill that out. Our finances are private. How can we work around this?
A:
When you buy a house your finances are not private. The seller has the right and the listing agent the obligation; to be sure you can actually come up with the money to close on the sale of the house. To represent that you can pay cash and not really have that ability is fraud. If you have to sell your house in Kansas first, then you will need to make an offer contingent on that sale. Frankly, most sellers will not accept a contingency offer. It could take months for your house to sell and they are basically off the market during that time. You can make a non-contingent offer once you have a buyer for your home in Kansas, which is a good way to go. You would use a different form that allows you some time to wait until your house in Kansas closes before closing on the home here. As for verification of funds, that will be required in any cash sale. A third party, usually a banker, stock broker, money management firm or trust attorney, will have to verify that you have enough cash to close the sale.
We just want to thank all of our many clients and friends for 20 years of support! Yes, Amiad & Associates is 20 years old this year. We intend to keep working for buyers and doing all we can for this wonderful community for many years to come.

Elusive Marshall strawberry belongs to Vashon’s history
LETTERS CONTINUED FROM 7
Every published study indicates that individuals with untreated ADHD have a significantly higher risk of developing SUD. However, substance abuse is a hugely complex process involving many factors. The belief that stimulants become the drug of choice is erroneous: ADHD individuals treated with stimulant medications feel “normal” not high. A 2003 meta-analysis of ADHD research concluded stimulant treatment of ADHD reduced the risk for substance disorders. The latest study demonstrates that ADHD adolescents treated with stimulants had a decreased risk for SUD and those not treated with stimulants were twice as likely to develop SUD. In fact, the sooner stimulant treatment was started, the less likely adolescents were to develop SUD. However, when stimulant treatment was not started until age 18, the rates of SUD were higher. Medication is one component of treatment. Decisions require collaboration with professionals expert in diagnosing and managing ADHD. — Nodie Sullivan MSN, ARNP, CNS
With perseverance and luck, the berry may also be part of the island’s future Anyone who has lived on Vashon Island for any length of time knows that the island used to be home to many commercial strawberry fields. In the early 1920s, Japanese farmers grew a type of berry called Marshall strawberries. Most notably, B.D. Mukai had a prospering farm of 60 acres on Vashon that sold Marshall strawberries. These strawberries were known for their amazing flavor, beautiful red coloring throughout the berry and exceptional size. Marshalls would put to shame the commercial strawberries that are grown today. The modern-day berries ship well, have a long shelf life and a nice cardboard taste. In contrast, the Marshall strawberry had a short harvest time (literally a few days) and didn’t ship well because of their softness. But oh, the flavor made it all worth it. B.D. Mukai figured out a cold packing process so these delicate berries could be shipped as far away as Chicago and even to London. In later years, the strawberry maggot and the strawberry root weevil infected the berry crop. This proved to be devastating to the Marshalls. In addition, commercial strawberry farmers developed varieties that proved to suit the needs of shipping and durability. It wasn’t long before Marshalls were no longer grown and basically forgotten. As a member of the Friends of Mukai, a group that is hoping to restore the oncefamous Mukai Japanese strolling garden, it seemed like a natural fit that if the restoration comes to pass, it would be a nice bit of
MUKAI FARM By CINDY STOCKETT history to have a plot of Marshall strawberries growing on the Mukai farm. With that idea in mind, I began researching the Marshall strawberries. I assumed it would just be a matter of searching on the internet for a grower and ordering some plants. It didn’t take long to discover that Marshall strawberries are no longer available, no longer grown — gone. I did find one source, a woman in Indiana that was selling a single Marshall strawberry plant (in a decorative pot) for $65! Hmm, time to look elsewhere. Another internet entry mentioned that Marshalls were being grown on a small plot on Bainbridge Island by a group called the Friends of Farmers. They had acquired the plants from an elderly Japanese farmer who had grown these in years past for commercial use. They were willing to sell me a few plants. So shovel in the trunk, I made the trip to Bainbridge this spring with a friend and we dug up and transported seven tiny plants back to Vashon. They are now growing in three areas of my garden, in case one succumbs to disease. The tale isn’t over. After more searching, I discovered that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis, Ore., is the keeper and last stop for endangered varieties of

fruits and vegetables. I promptly contacted them and discovered they do not ship or share starts with private folks. After explaining that I would be the caretaker of these Marshalls until they can be placed in their rightful plot on the Mukai farm, they agreed to ship me a few plants when the strawberry plants send out runners. Needless to say, I’m still waiting for them to arrive in the mail. One more chapter to the story. A month ago, I learned that Helen Brocard, a longtime Vashon resident, had acquired three Marshall strawberry plants from the Germplasm Repository about six years ago. She hoped to grow some since she remembers her family growing Marshalls when she was a child growing up on Vashon. She told me that when the plants arrived from Corvallis, two promptly died, but the one that survived multiplied and sent out many runners. She now had a nice plot of Marshalls. In recent months, Helen had decided to move to Seattle to be closer to her daughter. She graciously agreed to allow us to dig up some of her plants and take care of them until they can indeed return to the Mukai farm. I’m sure this isn’t the end of the story; it is just another chapter. With a bit of luck and a lot of perseverance by the Friends of Mukai, the Mukai farm and historic Japanese garden will one day be restored and have an established field of Marshall strawberries. Perhaps we will all be able to grow this aromatic, sweet-flavored, beautiful berry in our own gardens and remember a bit of Vashon history with every bite.

However, he said he believed the district is legally required to select the bus company that provides the lowest bid. Powell said that when the drivers’ previous four-year contract expired a year ago, he researched school bus driver wages around the state and found that Vashon drivers’ wages are about 27 percent below average when compared with drivers who are employed directly by similarly sized school districts. While the Vashon drivers don’t expect to earn the same wages as the actual school employees, Powell said, he also found that

That’s what they’re unwilling to do. Powell also claims that First Student delayed negotiations by stalling for months and not communicating with the union. Charges filed last week with the NLRB claim that First Student is bargaining in bad faith and, among other things, refuses to provide public documents pertinent to negotiations. Powell said the federal agency will likely perform an investigation and decide if the complaints warrant legal action. Bus drivers have said they plan to show for work when school starts next Tuesday, though Powell said it’s possible they could vote to strike after that. A strike would require a vote of more than 50 percent of the group. “The drivers are committed to staying on the job unless they’re left no other options, Powell said.

VYFS CONTINUED FROM 1
OARS has replaced the Holistic Approaches to Recovery Treatment (HART) program, which was established in 2009 to serve island youth and was headed by islander Marianne Rose. After watching how services were delivered “on the ground” at VYFS, Johnson said VYFS staff decided to restructure in June and began making the necessary staffing changes to accomplish it. Rose is no longer with the agency, and last week two new employees began working as clinical directors of OARS, one on a temporary basis. Jeffrey Zheutlin, who has been with VYFS for more than 20 years and was the clinical director for the past eight, is now the clinical director of the new division, which he believes will serve islanders well. “We will have a program in place that is going to grow and will serve multiple needs,” he

Zheutlin also spoke to the qualifications and the skills the new staff members bring. “We’re bringing in some experts,” he said. “We want to utilize their expertise.” Filling the new clinical supervisor role is Heather Youngs, who moved to the island from Hawaii with her partner and their 2-yearold twin daughters in November. Youngs said they moved to Vashon because they thought it would be a good place to raise children. “We always had our eye on Vashon,” she said. Though just settling in on her first day last week, Youngs said she was pleased to be selected for the new position, as she enjoys working in the mental health field and appreciates serving as a clinical supervisor, which is a multifaceted position and allows her to work with both staff and clients. She is credentialed as a licensed mental health counselor and a chemical dependency profes-

For the last six years, Youngs worked in Honolulu with homeless people and the chronically mentally ill and prior to that in Seattle as a clinical supervisor at the Community Psychiatric Clinic. Because her credentials are from Hawaii, she must now go through the process of becoming credentialed in Washington, Johnson said, a process that could take up to six months. To assist while that process is under way, VYFS has also hired an interim clinical supervisor, Rita Szantay, who has a long background in mental health, chemical dependency treatment and primary care. Johnson noted that many people go off the island for addiction services, but she hopes with these changes in place, people will feel they can get their needs met on Vashon. “We want to be a provider people can turn to on the island,” she said.

She later also became a dental assistant for Dr. Neil Smith of Vashon Island, working for him approximately 30 years until he closed his practice. Lorraine was fun and funny. She always spoke highly of everyone she met, and loved her associations and the people she served in the dentist office. She enjoyed her children, mothering them and any other children they brought home to meet her. She lived on the water on Burton Peninsula, wanting her children to have a beach to grow up on. Later, she sold her property there and moved to Vashon Highway SW. She brought all her children together to help refurbish the log cabin where they all enjoyed her company and summers in the sunshine on the water. Lorraine passed way August 16, 2013 at 12:50 p.m., attended by her two daughters. She will be greatly missed. Private services will be held. Please leave memories at www.FuneralAlternatives.org

Born 5/09, LEXI and her sister LENA were girls on the streets. They were both rescued by a VIPP volunteer and enrolled in the VIPP charm school to hone their social skills. Lexi was more shy than Lena but in the last month she has really come out of her shell to become a kitty who loves to be petted. Lexi is still a shy kitty and she will do best in a quiet home. If you have a quiet home and some patience, these kitties will really thrive. There is a special adoption rate for adopting them together.

Born 2007, STAR is a petite and sensitive girl who was completely bowled over by the resident cat in the home that adopted her in 2011. They tried everything to make it work since they were so in love with this little girl. In the end, they knew she could not be happy living with another cat especially one with a big personality. Star is back at VIPP and looking for a home where she can be the only star attraction in her new home.
