The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) board of directors voted at its Aug. 5 meeting to place two levies and one bond measure on the ballot in February 2014.
The two levies would replace current measures that expire at the end of 2014, while the bond would build schools to house projected enrollment growth and to replace existing aging schools. “The funds raised from levy measures provide basic
educational services for our students, needed building repairs and improvements and technology to help our students learn,” said LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce. “The bond measure funds construction of new schools and classroom space needed to accommo-
date our increasing student enrollment and funds the replacement/renovation of our oldest school buildings.” According to a press release issued by LWSD, the overall tax rate with the replacement levies and the new bond measure would
be $4.73 per $1,000 of assessed value. The increase for the average valued home in the district would be $365 per year or $30 per month.

With a number of construction projects underway — both public and private — residents, workers and visitors in downtown Redmond can start to see the city’s plan to turn the neighborhood into an urban center take shape. Phase 1 of construction on the Redmond Central Connector (RCC) is scheduled to be complete and open sometime this fall. Jill Smith, a business liaison for the City of Redmond, said when this portion of the trail, which creates connections with the Bear Creek Trail and Sammamish River Trail, is complete there will be a community celebration, adding that the event will probably be late fall or early December.

When the RCC opens,
Smith said a new parking lot will also be opening, located at Leary Way Northeast and Bear Creek Parkway. She said the 92-space lot will be a paid lot with hourly and all-day rates for short-term or daily parking. The lot is not intended for long-term parking, Smith said. Bob Sailer, an attorney at Pacific NorthWest Law Group (PNWLG) at 16141 Cleveland St., Suite C, said the current lack of available parking in downtown is an issue for them and their clients, especially now as many construction and city vehicles are taking what spots are open. “It’s been a negative impact on our business, for sure,” he said. Sailer said part of the problem is the lack of information from the city, so they don’t always know what is going to happen or when. The City of Redmond will celebrate Great Day of Play today at the Redmond City Hall Campus, 15670 N.E. 85th St. Boys and girls in grades 3-8 can hoop it up with the 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament. Redmond Fire Department (RFD) crews were still stationed at All Wood Recycling on Thursday, making sure Wednesday’s fire wouldn’t flare up again, according to an RFD administrative assistant. RFD, along with crews from Bellevue, Woodinville, Eastside Fire, Kirkland and Seattle were fighting a fire stemming from a large debris pile at All Wood Recycling, located at 8504 192nd Ave. N.E. in Redmond, Wednesday at about 5 p.m., according to the Kirkland Firefighters Facebook page. According to RFD spokesperson Julie Beard, the fire was fully contained to the debris pile. Fire crews and heavy machinery crews from All Wood Recycling worked in conjunction to dismantle the debris pile and continue to apply water to the smoldering pile until it was fully extinguished. At

The work was expected to continue until about 8 p.m. Thursday, if not longer, due to the sheer size of the debris pile. Fire crews worked in rotation to ensure the safety of all teams. The cause of the fire is undetermined, Beard said, but appears to be a result of heat and the large pile of wood decomposing and igniting itself. There is nothing suspicious about the fire at press time. Beard said RFD
began receiving phone calls around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday regarding a fire in a debris pile. Crews arrived and discovered a large pile of wood debris on fire. The debris are mainly from land clearing projects and include stumps, trees and other similar items. The pile is estimated to be at least a couple of hundred feet wide and 70 feet tall. There were no injuries and all major roads were open as of 8:21 p.m. Wednesday.
Suspicious circumstance: A report was taken at 9:11 p.m. for suspicious circumstance in the 12200 block of Willows Road in Grass Lawn.
Disorderly conduct: Redmond police arrested a male at 5:02 p.m. for disorderly conduct in the 10900 block of Red-Wood Road on Education Hill.
Burglary: Redmond police responded to a report of a burglary at 9:43 a.m. from the 16400 block of Northeast 74th Street downtown where money was stolen. A suspect has not been identified. Traffic hazard: A bike was found on the roadway in the 11500 block of Avondale Road on Education Hill at 1:11 a.m.

School, Little League provide life lessons

I have weird dreams about school. All... the... time. For a while now, I’ve been done with classes, textbooks, note taking and the fright of receiving test results back from instructors — even if I knew I did well. I’m just paranoid like that. But still, in the middle of the night, there I am running late to a class I’ve rarely attended, always unprepared for a test and always behind on the reading. I know I’ll get reprimanded by the instructor and have my classmates shaking their heads when I walk through the doors. Fortunately, I always rise from slumber before I find out what trouble I’ve gotten myself into. I waken relieved that I didn’t fail in real life... and that I’ve put all my schooling behind me. On Sept. 3, Redmond students and instructors will return to school and begin another important year in their lives. There’s plenty of learning on tap and tons of challenges... and fun, as well. I often look back on my schooldays and remember the men and women who taught me and supported me, or helped me make it through classes in a study group, or just stood by my side as a good friend. It took me a while to get serious about writing, but I soon came alive in journalism classes thanks to my junior college and university instructors who were tough on me, but in a good way. They pushed me to take on a variety of stories and really dig into the reporting aspect of the job. One instructor took me aside one day and encouraged me to spend more time with my writing, instead of just knocking out a quick story and moving on. One student editor got angry with me
once when he thought I was slacking off. Parents are always there for support, as well, and I was lucky to have mom and dad school teachers who paved a solid road for me. So, when school begins next month, take it all in and be sure not to miss out on anything that comes across your path in the classroom or in the hallways. Knowledge is key, friends are crucial and you’ll want to absorb every bit of it because it will shape who you are now and in the future.
AROUND THE BASES
Little League was another important part of growing up for me. The one all-star squad I played on lost its first game of the local tournament and that was it, we were done for the summer. It was a victory of sorts for me, though, since I was the only player who didn’t strike out twice against the other team’s ace. I nearly spoiled his perfect game early on with a line drive toward the
first baseman, who had to lunge to his right to snag the ball and throw to the pitcher covering first for the close out. Darn. On a much larger scale, incoming Overlake School student Bryce DeLay is making an impact on the ball field at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. As part of the Eastlake Little League squad, he’s doubled and scored a run in the team’s games. At press time, the locals were 3-1 and one win away from the U.S. championship game and two victories away from the World title game. Whether they’re still in the World Series or not by the time you read this, it’s been one heck of a ride for DeLay and his crew. They’ve worked hard together to win those games, and I’m sure they’ve learned how to rebound from the tough loss. Maybe one day, one of the players will be reminiscing about their time in the spotlight in a newspaper column like this. Well done, boys.
School is on the way Sept. 3: Many challenges are on the horizon The telltale ads, stores boasting the newest “in” styles and tailored sales can only point to one thing: school is approaching and it’s coming fast on Sept. 3. It’s time to break out the packs of blank note cards, composition notebooks and AP textbooks, and reprogram your mind (and alarm clock) out of summer mode. Time to face the harsh reality, that is no more “for fun” all-nighters, but agonizing hours of last-minute highlighting, notetaking and cramming. At least that’s what it seems to me. As an incoming junior at the STEM School, it’s no secret that 11th grade is infamously known for Christina Dias

its rigor, stress and days when you just might want to pull your hair out. College applications are seemingly around the corner, AP tests at a full load, and let’s not forget our dear SATs. But wait! There’s no dropping the extracurriculars here. You’re going to want to be on that varsity sport this year again, remember? And what about being president of that club, and treasurer of that other club? You’re not going to want to stop band, either. You were first chair, after all. Admittedly, school is what you want it to be. Think of its negatives and get bogged down by these details, and sure, you’ll find the experience to be just what you expected. Focus on working toward your best and staying on track while still being able to have a good time, and you’ll find it a lot more enjoyable. A lot of my peers, especially
those in accelerated and advanced programs in high school as I am, will maintain the idea that school is a time for strenuous work and 100 percent academic effort, with “fun” and “party time” for later. And sure, this is true. But it doesn’t mean that these years aren’t a time to grow as a person and find yourself. Disregarding all clichés, you can definitely apply this personal growth to your academic success. Finding a personal, say, exercise regimen can teach you a lot about discipline and motivation that you can then apply to your study habits. Staying in touch with your hobbies and things you excel at can teach you a lot about refining your strengths and weaknesses and figuring how to address them. Socializing, although in large doses seems to be waning due to growing pressure of academic performance, can help you learn about yourself and can actually be

a healthy break. I can only speak from my meager years of experience and do acknowledge that I have a long road ahead of me. However, whether you agree with me or not, the beginning of a new school year undoubtedly marks a fresh page and a new start for all of us, whether that means a change of lifestyle or a new studying habit you want to try out. Whatever it may be, I highly encourage you to reevaluate what works/has not worked for you in the past, take a deep breath and dive into the upcoming year with a strong and driven start. Most importantly, enjoy the last week of August and enjoy what the last stretch of summer gives!

Although a new parking lot will open with the RCC, Sailer is concerned that it may not be sufficient in accommodating everyone who would use it — which includes RCC trail users, Redmond Saturday Market shoppers, downtown business customers and more. In planning for downtown growth, Sailer said he feels the city did not really include area small businesses in the process or planned for the impacts the construction would have on them. “What about the businesses?” he asked. “They’re sort of the stepchild of the (downtown development).” Jamie Ambrose, a sales associate at State Farm Insurance at 16528 Cleveland St., said the current construction is a bit of a distraction with the noise, rerouting roads and construction vehicles taking up parking spaces, but she understands all of this is in the name of city growth. Smith acknowledged the inconvenience the construction is causing downtown and said she hopes people will be understanding and look at the big picture for what the city is working to achieve. “Construction is inconvenient and it’s painful, but it’s necessary to get to the final goal,” she said.

There will be a community meeting in which the five consultant finalists to design the park will give presentations on their ideas and concepts for the park. After the presentations, Smith said the community will rate and vote for who will be the final consultant. Once the consultant is determined, there will be opportunities for the community to contribute ideas and share what they would like to see in the park. “They get to really contribute and influence,” said City of Redmond communications specialist Anne Marie Peacock. Smith said within the next 10 weeks, the buildings located on Brown Street between Redmond Way and Cleveland Street will be coming down to make way for the park. Before the land gets developed, she said the space will be used for staging for the upcoming
Cleveland streetscape and parking for construction vehicle and equipment. Smith said the streetscape is the project that will prepare for the couplet conversion of turning Cleveland Street and Redmond Way back into two-way streets. The work on the conversion is scheduled to begin in 2015 with it being complete around spring 2016. With the conversion, she said Redmond Way will be the higher-speed arterial and Cleveland Street will be more of a main street with a curb-less sidewalk, making it more vehicle, bike and pedestrian friendly.

The ice cream shop served four flavors — vanilla, chocolate, caramel and peach berry — at the annual festival. Friedman said it was great that Theno’s is making a comeback to serve a community that loves it so much. “Something that never should have gone away,” she said. And many would agree. Several people who stood in line Friday afternoon for ice cream said the only reason they stopped by the festival was for Theno’s. At 34, Kim Ocampo grew up going to Theno’s. Her mother used to buy milk from the
dairy when it was still a fully operating dairy with cows on the land. And when Ocampo had her daughter, she would bring the now 6-and-ahalf-year-old to the shop to enjoy the ice cream that was such a big part of her life. “We cried when they closed,” Ocampo said about herself and her mother. She added that they would go as far as Snoqualmie for ice cream, but nothing has compared to Theno’s. “There’s magic in there,” she said. When Ocampo learned Theno’s was coming back, she called her mother to share the news
and they “cheered for joy.” She and her daughter attended the festival on Friday and said they planned to return on Saturday for more ice cream.
THE SAME, BUT DIFFERENT
Like Ocampo, Glenn Bloxham grew up going to Theno’s. But in addition to being a fan of the ice cream, the Redmond resident is also a board member for the Bonafide American Mission (BAM), the nonprofit that now owns Theno’s and has worked for a year to bring back the beloved dairy. Bloxham, who is also co-chair of BAM’s
Theno’s committee, said they began negations with the dairy’s previous owner, Doug Bloor, after last year’s festival. BAM acquired the Theno’s name and equipment in the spring and they set up a facility at 21 Acres, a nonprofit in Woodinville whose mission is to cultivate, demonstrate and advance systems that support sustainable agriculture. Although Theno’s is coming back, things will be a little different. Bloxham said BAM and Theno’s will be offering community cooking classes at 21 Acres to teach people how to make the popular ice cream from beginning
to end. The new business plan is to make the ice cream through this education and training program and with help from volunteers, using traditional Theno’s techniques, equipment and ingredients — Bloxham said in acquiring the dairy, they also received all of the original ice cream recipes. The final plans for the new Theno’s reincarnation are still up in the air as Bloxham is currently working on a business plan for the retail side of the business. He said they are looking into various options including a physical building or a food truck, which would make it easier to
do more festivals as well as move from location to location throughout the week. Bloxham said he has talked to a local business owner about the possibility of using their parking lot as a location for a Theno’s food truck if that is the direction they end up going. “Nobody says no,” he said about the help they have received in bringing back Theno’s. Friedman said this is because the excitement is there to see Theno’s return. “It’s a part of this area,” she said. “People know it, they love it and they want it to come back.”

Melissa Reinardy has always been a people person and knew from a young age that she wanted to work with others in a care-giving role. So as a girl growing up in Grand Rapids, Mich., the two professions at the top of her “what do you want to be when you grow up” list were nurse and teacher. But when she was in sixth grade, she watched a video of a surgery in class and fainted at the sight of the blood. And like that, nursing was no longer an option. The moment teaching became her clear career path came in high school when she worked in an elementary school classroom for children with autism as part of an independent study class. “Maigunn is the name of the little girl who captured my heart during my high school independent study class when I got the privilege to meet her as a fifth-grader,” Reinardy said, who teaches first grade at John James Audubon Elementary

I just loved these kids and wanted to be a part of advocating for their needs.” Reinardy was a special
education teacher for two years in Michigan before she moved to Washington and began teaching at Audubon in the Lake Washington School District. She has been there ever since, starting as a special education teacher and switching over to first grade in 2002.
“I work with outstanding teachers every day during the school year. I’m always learning from others and hope to never stop learning,” she said about why she has stayed at the same school for so long. “My school community is very supportive and encouraging, which is why
I’ve been in the same place for 17 years.” Reinardy’s high opinion about the Audubon community is reciprocated as she was voted Best Teacher in the Reporter’s Best of Redmond contest in July. This is the first year the contest has had this category and Reinardy said, “it truly is an honor.” “For those who voted for me, thank you,” she said. “I am deeply honored and appreciate your kind recognition.” Reinardy said she shares the honor with her colleagues at Audubon as the teachers at the school always share ideas with each other and she is always learning something from them — whether they are longtime teachers or new to the profession. “I work with the best teachers,” she said. “I feel very lucky to be where I’m at.” Reinardy, who lives in Bellevue, said her favorite part of her job is the relationships she builds with her students and seeing how much they
grow throughout the school year. In first grade, she said, many things are still very new for the kids at the beginning of the year. Teachers have to teach more than what’s in the curriculum. They have to show students how to line up properly, organize their desks, hang up their backpacks and coats and more. “There’s just so much going on,” Reinardy said. Although she loves her job and said she can’t think of anything else she’d rather do, being a first grade teacher does have its challenges. Reinardy said you always have to keep the kids busy — which shouldn’t be difficult for someone who would bring a bag of arts and crafts with her to her babysitting jobs when she was younger. “In these primary grades, you can’t have downtime… otherwise they’ll take over,” she said.

Marjorie Evelyn Herr Riensche passed away July 27, 2013. Interment was at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Salem, Oregon. Marjorie was born February 20, 1921 to Elvin and Ida Herr, in Marion County near Central Howell School and grew up on a farm in the area. In 1939 Marjorie and Paul married at Immanuel Mennonite Church, Pratum, Oregon. She was a selfless supporter of Paul during both their farming years and their years of ministry. After the children were raised she did volunteer work for a number of organizations, such as King County Cancer and Heart Society and Cascade Nursing Home. When Paul passed away in 2004 they had been happily married 64 years. They raised a daughter and four sons, Janet (Gary), Phillip (Carolyn), Gary (who passed away in 1963), Robert, and David (Kirsti). from the 2012-13 school year or expand these programs to new schools. For example, two years ago the foundation funded IXL, a popular online math program, at three schools. This year, 10 schools were awarded grants giving students access to IXL math practice. Popular robotics classes and clubs build students’ math, science and technology skills, but are expensive to maintain, so each year Eastlake High School and Rose Hill Middle School rely on the foundation to provide them with the materials they need to continue their robotics programs. A foundation grant last year enabled Rose Hill Middle School teacher Jason Ewert to purchase materials for his four robotics classes when class enrollment unexpectedly grew by 60 students. Many of Ewert’s students reported that robotics was their favorite class, and that it motivated them to come to school each day. For others, the class exposed them to a career in programming or engineering. “It has been my desire to help implement a pathway for students in engineering and robotics from middle to high school,” said Ewert. In time, students will have “opportunities to earn college credit through this pathway and it will provide a great niche for kids interested in robotics and engineering.” A video of Ewert’s robotics students can be found at www.lwsf.org. Reaching for Success grants can be used for either a classroom or an entire school, and school principals, teachers or parent volunteers are encouraged to apply. The insurance companies may assess the driver’s record and age and submit a request for a driving evaluation. Your senior will need to comply if they want to continue receiving benefits and coverage. 5. Report anonymously to the Department of Motor Vehicles. While this tactic may seem sneaky, if you are truly concerned for your loved one’s life and other people’s safety, you may need to pick up the phone and get the help you need. When you speak with department it is appropriate to remain anonymous and report the unsafe driver. The department should contact the individual and have him or her complete a driving evaluation to ensure that they are a safe driver. Precautions will be taken following the driving exam.

When the Redmond Junior Mustangs football teams (members of the Greater Eastside Jr. Football Association) take the field this fall, they will be doing so with mouthguards that have been provided free of charge by Dr. Matthew Bruner of Bruner Orthodontics in Redmond. According to the National Youth Sports Foundation, more than five million teeth are knocked out in athletic events each year. Athletes
who do not wear protective mouthguards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth. In a recent study published by the American Association of Orthodontics, 67 percent of parents admitted their child does not wear a mouthguard during organized sports. Shock Doctor mouthguards can cost anywhere between $15-$30 and they need to be replaced every season. These young players will wear them while they’re running around during games and at practices. Dr. Bruner has always made it a mission to give back to those communities that have supported him and his business over the years.

about 22.5 percent of the district’s general funds budget the state does not cover. Some of the expenses the levy would cover include 60 percent of the district’s transportation costs, some staff training, athletics and activities, textbooks, insurance and utilities and maintenance. “Over the years, the state just kept cutting back and cutting back,” Reith said, explaining why the levy has come to make up more than a fifth of the district’s general budget. She said the state Supreme Court’s decision on the McCleary case for the state to more adequately fund public schools is just going into effect and the state has already put down one payment toward schools, but it is still not enough yet.

The second levy, the Capital Projects Levy, would replace an expiring levy to fund both facility and technology projects. The four-year levy totals $127.2 million with $41.6 million going toward district facilities and $85.6 million going toward technology. Reith said some of the things this levy would fund include replacing and improving building systems such as hot water heaters and roofs, upgrading fields and playgrounds when needed and bringing buildings up to health and safety standards. “This will really hit most buildings (throughout the district),” she said. Reith added that newer buildings in LWSD shouldn’t
need much work unless it’s an added safety feature such as inside-locking mechanisms on doors, which have been installed for the possibility of a lockdown. The technology side of the capital projects levy will go toward improving the district’s technology infrastructure, security and antivirus capabilities and replacing equipment when needed. The levy would also go toward maintaining the infrastructure for the district’s payroll and other accounting systems. Reith pointed out that LWSD is a business with a lot of employees with salaries and benefits and they need to be able to keep track of the records accurately — especially as the district is being held accountable to taxpayers. “The levies fund basic edu-
cational services, technology and facility repairs,” Pierce said. “If the replacement levies were not to pass, we would be unable to continue to provide our current level of educational services for our students.”
ACCOMMODATING GROWTH
The bond measure that will be put on the ballot is a 20-year bond for $755 million and would go toward building new schools needed to accommodate growth throughout the district, which officials project to be by about 4,200 students over the next four years. The bond would also go toward modernizing existing schools. If approved, the bond would enable LWSD to build new schools and space for students over the next eight years.
“If the bond were not to pass, our oldest buildings would not be modernized and we would need to determine how to accommodate our growing student population projected to increase by over 4,000 students in the next eight years – without any new school buildings or additions to buildings,” Pierce said. Reith said the new schools include three elementary schools — two of which will probably be in or near Redmond. She said one would be in Redmond Ridge East to accommodate the growth in that area and the second Redmond-area elementary school would be on a piece of district-owned property in North Redmond at 172nd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 122nd Street as there is growth in those neighbor-
hoods. The neighborhood of the third elementary school is still undetermined, Reith said. The bond would also pay for a middle school, which would probably be in Redmond, as well. In addition, Reith said the bond would bring an international-focused high school (similar to International Community School in Kirkland) to the east side of the district and a STEM-focused high school (similar to STEM School in Redmond) to the west side of the district. These two schools would be choice schools and pull students from throughout the district. The funds for modernization would also replace two schools in Redmond: Evergreen Middle School and Rockwell Elementary School.
